1. Farmers make a living by farming. There is plenty of green space here.

Urban Design & Landscape Design of Traditional Community Area

Location: Huimin community, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China Problem: Messy greening and shabby image, the environment cannot meet the needs of people around. Type: Individual Tutor: Xingyu He (xingyuhe_star@126.com) Time: 12/2018 – 02/2019 (Third Academic Year) Area: 52000 ㎡

2. After the unified land requisition by the state, the farmers began to live in settlement houses. Green land gradually turned into wasteland.

2001

3. University and other communities were built next to the original community. Green space has become much less.

2006

Greenland

4. Sichuan Agricultural University was completed. There was less green space.

2008

Other land use

5. The first floor of the building was occupied by shops, where a small commercial pedestrian street came into being, with little green space.

2010

2019

Project introduction: In order to renew the old community next to Sichuan Agricultural University and retain local people’s habit of planting, a new design has been made for the shop entrance, garden, residential area and business district of the community, so as to create a green and environmental-friendly community.

■ LOCATION ANALYSIS Project overview: Located in Wenjiang District, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, China, Huimin Community is only one street away from Chengdu Campus of Sichuan Agricultural University. It was originally a centralized settlement for surrounding farmers, equipped with relatively complete supporting infrastructure. It was mainly a residential community.

■ PROBLEM-SOLUTION-CONCEPT-STRATEGY People

1. People shift from farming to business. Communication between people decreases but living pressure increases.

Need a beautiful environment to relax.

2. Previously people had small yards in every family. Now there are only unified buildings and no small yards.

Need to provide a venue for people to interact.

3. There is only one pavilion in the square for people to rest and play.

Need to increase the infrastructure in the square.

4. Still with the habit of planting, people plant something in the open space without permission.

Need to provide an area where people can grow vegetables and fruits.

5. The guiding system in the site is ineffective.

Need to redesign the guiding sign.

6. Cars are parked at will on the road.

Need to redesign the parking areas.

→ Dynamic and static division Dynamic area Static area Semi-static area

Urbanization is accelerating.

Residential area

→ Overall structure Land use analysis: Most buildings, 14 m–18 m high, are mainly of residential use. The first floor of the building is basically a commercial area with a good variety of shops, but the business in many shops is not brisk. Sundries, such as restaurant seats, car repair tools and so on are piled up at the door of the shops.

The site was updated quickly yet blindly.

7. The shops are in the first floor of the building, and it was chaotic at the entrance of the shops.

Need to design the layout of the shop entrance. 4

Landscape Design of Waterfront Ecological Area

200 400m

Location: Jinjiang River, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China Problem: Lack of ecological advantages, lack of landscape identification points, poor water quality, loss of wildlife habitat Type: Individual Tutor: Rui Wan (13792@sicau.edu.cn) Time: 04/2020 – 06/2020 (Fourth Academic Year) Area: 340000 ㎡ Project introduction: The design turns the land of this project into a “green visual corridor of mountains and rivers”. The main design content is to extend and reshape the riverbank landscape, focusing on the construction of sustainable ecological civilization and improving the quality of people’s life. Diversify the forms of the waterfront space, create a multi-functional waterfront open space that integrates sightseeing, leisure and fitness, so that the river will be harmonious with people, and serve the urban residents. The site also contains wildlife habitats, mainly for fish and birds. So, based on the understanding of the living rules and habitat requirements of wildlife, it is necessary to manage their relationship with human activities, and to create a symbiotic and sustainable landscape.

Both sides of the riverbank in this section are mostly residential land, and on the west side of the river, there is a famous historical and cultural garden—Wangjiang Tower Park. The total area of the project is about 34 hectares, the planned and designed land 5.2 hectares (excluding water surface and urban roads), 20 hectares of water surface, and 8.8 hectares of highway. The surrounding land is mostly in residential areas. The current situation of the site is that there is no overall connection, and the space utilization rate is not high. In the city planning of Chengdu, this area is positioned as a waterfront recreational land. There is a river branch downstream of this section.

With the increase of the population, a larger scale of settlement is formed on the basis of the encircling type, which is generally formed by a dozen or so relatively independent quadrangle courtyards with a considerable scale. The common name is "Large Linpan", which can accommodate 70 or 80 families, and a few "Super Linpan" with more than 100 families or even larger scale.

This kind of Linpan is formed naturally on the basis of semienclosed type with a larger scale. Often form several courtyards, quadrangle courtyard layout, each courtyard naturally forms a relatively independent, complete living function space.

■ USER ANALYSIS

The layout of the space is more abundant with different priorities. The compound of the house has a certain scale of yard, trees around the house around. The courtyard functions as an auxiliary space for production and living. Courtyards generally face the road.

■ CONCEPTUAL SKETCH 1F

According to the spatial atmosphere of the film and the continuity of the original building, we created the architectural and landscape space of the cafe.

Competition requirements In addition to the architectural renovation, there was an another important condition of the competition: the designers were asked to use a specified new material called "Walking On Coffee".

■ EMOTION Antagonism

Harmony

Several emotions

Summary The use of the new materials in a site of traditional Linpan reminds me of a movie: The Teahouse of the August Moon . The story of the American soldier being assimilated into the colony fits well with the collision and fusion of new materials needed in the design competition with traditional woodlands. The mood from antagonism to harmony is also the space atmosphere we want to introduce into our design.

5

Process

In the beginning, Captain Fisby wanted to build buildings that the colonists did not want. There was a gap between them.

At first Captain Fisby was reluctant to be dressed locally, or taken care of by Lotus Blossom.

Fisby decided to build the tea houses that the villagers really wanted, and they raised money by selling their homemade wine.

As he settled into the village, Fisby and Lotus Blossom get along even though they don't speak the same language.

Project introduction: Take part in the entire construction process, build a mixed-material structure under the cliff of 100 meters high. The small-sized building and form present a state of looking up at the cliff and nature, which also conveys the design concept—the awe of nature.

The village begins to wither

In 2015

The period of 1980s–1990s

In 1990s

Planting tobacco destructs the soil. After a while, the soil became even more barren.

More efforts are made to vigorously develop the tourism around Fairy Hill; however, the villagers far from the central area could not access most of the resources. Poverty and poor infrastructure drive young people away from their hometown, while the village is withering away.
