Covert And Obscured

Covert And Distort Alex Duncan

Ar3st Analysis “Ghost” Caroline Moore Feeling isolated or alone may have inspired Moore to take this image because the subject maAer is withdrawn, and barely visible in a desolate seDng. To portray this, Moore didn’t use bold colours or even focus the subject maAer as feeling isolated can make you feel as if you are consumed by your surroundings, like you’re invisible, or a ghost. This image could also be symbolic of how people driI through life. Similar to feeling lonely or isolated, being unfocused in life can leave you feeling like a ghost, portrayed in the image. Moore mainly portrays this by capturing a female in a slow shuAer speed, crea3ng a blurred ghostly figure. Personally, I believe the image portrays loneliness as its predominant issue. I get this response from the image as Moore created the effect of a spirit wandering alone through the distant look on the subject maAer’s face paired with the ghostly blurred movement of her body. My brief is “Covert and Obscure” and so my aim is to distort iden3ty What I like most about this image is that there is no intricacy in the within the photographs. To distort iden3ty, I want to make the subject photograph and the tones are sombre, contributes to the theme of maAer’s purpose unclear as well as distor3ng their actual features loneliness because it is monotonous and empty. Caroline Moore has inspired me to take my own photographs by the effec3veness of the blurred movement. Moore uses this to enhance the ghostly feel to the image, obscuring the subject maAer’s body and iden3ty, which adds a mysterious atmosphere to the image. I aim to use a slow shuAer speed with portraiture to effec3vely obscure the subject maAer and create an unknown purpose as to what the subject maAer is doing which should create meaning for a viewer. Also the contrast between the white dress and the bleak surroundings add to the atmosphere because of the symbolic clashes between purity of a woman in a white dress and a dirty, abandoned looking seDng. This has inspired me to compose juxtaposi3on between the subject maAer and the surroundings in my images.

Idea 1 Evalua3on

My original inten3on in taking these images was to achieve the same disorienta3ng effect as Caroline Moore in her “Ghost” image. I aimed to distort a subject maAers’ iden3ty through the use of a slow shuAer speed and by edi3ng in Photoshop. The technical quali3es of my images could be improved. For example, the ligh3ng was not as good as I had hoped as it was very bight on the day of shoo3ng which caused the images to be extremely bright as I needed to use a slow shuAer speed. However I feel that I edited the images as best as I could in terms of improving the ligh3ng. Also, I am pleased with the outcome of the blurred movement within the images as it distorted the main subject maAers’ iden3ty effec3vely.

The composi3ons of the images are rela3vely similar in each image so I would have improved that aspect of the formal elements of these images to make them more interes3ng. I am more pleased with the outcome of different shapes and tones in my developed images as there is more variety than in the ini3al set of images. Using acetate effec3vely contributed more layers to the image as well as masking the subject maAers’ iden3ty. I believe that my developed images will have a stronger visual impact on a viewer as they have more depth to them, whereas the ini3al images are disorienta3ng however they are less aesthe3cally pleasing than the developed photographs. I aimed to create images that cause viewers to decipher that the blurred movement around the subject maAer symbolizes chaos and confusion that in turn distorts her iden3ty. However this may not be the case and viewers may not decipher the same symbolism, some may simply find the images mysterious and confusing. Although I believe that my original inten3ons have been carried through to the developed images so that viewers will be able to decipher the level of symbolism I aimed to create.

Ar3st Analysis “Void” – Kyle Thompson

“Void” is a self-‐portrait which suggests that

Thompson was influenced by feeling as if he needed to re create himself. The image shows the subject maAer to be pain3ng himself black using his own hands. The connota3ons of white and black suggest that the subject maAer was once pure and gradually becomes less pure, possibly turning sinister. This could also be symbolic of being a blank canvas. So the gradual increase of turning black could represent how over 3me you can create yourself however you want to be – posi3vely or nega3vely. Personally, I am very fond of this image. I like how simply the images create a narra3ve and how many different ways there are to interpret the photograph. This has influenced me to use bright paint instead of black to re invent a subject maAer, obscuring their iden3ty, and bring a slightly less sinister feel to the image.
