A message from the Executive Director to the Class of 2024

Congratulations Leaders!

You’ve each reached quite a milestone in your life You’re closing a chapter of incredible growth and development throughout your childhood and about to start another chapter of even more growth and development into adulthood.

It’s an exciting time, and I promise you one that will be full of ups, downs and pivots. You will have successes, failures, and a lot of lessons learned along the way It’s our hope that what you’ve learned through 21st Century Leaders will guide you, empower you, and inspire you to navigate it all.

Never forget that YOU can do it You can do the hard things, the uncomfortable things, the things that will challenge you. YOU are uniquely you and we hope you have discovered (or at least growing into) your own leadership style and voice that’s authentically you.

You have all the skills and abilities to lead in any situation that you’re faced with. Just never forget that ‘leadership isn’t about me, it’s about you; leadership isn’t about you, it’s about all those around you.’ You must take care of yourself, but you also must take care of others. To inspire others to become leaders themselves Thanks for being on this journey with us and helping us celebrate such a milestone year for the organization, too! We can’t wait to see what you’ll do next!

Go be great!

Future Plans: I plan to do a dual degree from Whitman College & Columbia University and major in Physics, Politics, & Engineering. After earning a Dual Degree in Physics & Politics (Whitman) and Environmental Engineering (Columbia), I aspire to attend Harvard Law School and earn a dual JD and MBA degree. On the side, I wish to drastically grow my production company, creating films (maybe vide marketing campaigns) to promote environmental justice and equitable access to STEM education around the world After developing a strong background in filmmaking and environmental law, I hope to influence national politics as a U.S. Senator Ultimately, I want to change people's perspectives— while developing my own, connect communities to equitable education and clean water, fight for climate justice at the highest levels, and be eternal service to humanity

Favorite 21CL Memory: My favorite My favorite 21CL memory was SYLI. First, I was very excited to get accepted, and even more so by the diverse range of talent, perspectives, and life experiences that were exchanged throughout the week. Speaking at the Coca-Cola Headquarters was a highlight for me. Being supported by a room of over 75 of Georgia's strongest student leaders made me feel confident in my public speaking and leadership ability It gave me the audacity to connect with the Coca-Cola Representatives which led me to basing my IB Business Management Internal Assessment on the Coca-Cola Company's approach to sustainability 21CL Impact: 21CL has widened my perspective, helped me foster connections with students from across the state, and gave me confidence to pursue my wildest dreams. Through team projects at SYLI, I learned how to not only effectively communicate my bewildered ideas, but have enough humility to understand and connect the other bewildered ideas and viewpoints of my teammates. Along the way, I gained connections with 78 bright students who I've come to admire through silly exercises on the lawn at night This experience taught me the importance of prioritizing connections and bonds to learn from others' lived experiences. I am proud of the person and leader I am becoming, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude to 21CL for providing me with this invaluable opportunity

instead ended up to what seemed to be a lounging area We explored this unfamiliar floor and stumbled upon a pool table, some playing cards, and, most interestingly, a grand piano One of the guys I was with stepped forward, sat down on the piano bench, and began to play one of the most beautiful pieces of piano music I had ever heard up to that point He told us that he had been practicing piano since he was just a small child, which was an amazing feat. After that, we all managed to find our dorms before lights out at eleven.

Favorite 21CL Memory: My favorite 21CL memory is when we were divided into groups and tasked to brainstorm about what a new business idea would look like. I had never done anything like this before and had just met my teammates for the first time. We had the help of a mentor to guide us and things began to flow naturally. It was a lot of fun connecting with everyone and building out this concept Not only was this a great team building exercise, but this experience also taught me various perspectives of entrepreneurship and the risks and benefits to consider when creating a company Although it was challenging because of all the critical thinking, we came up with a presentation we were proud of and finished the day as friends

21CL Impact: Since my week with 21CL at Emory, I discovered that I am comfortable being pushed out of my comfort zone and welcome the opportunity to meet and work with new people. I have also learned how to come to a consensus in a group, even when our ideas differ. Overall, I feel more confident, well-rounded, and appreciative of many voices contributing to projects, because a leader listens to their peers

Favorite 21CL Memory: My favorite memory is attending the HealthCare & IT Institute (HII) last summer hosted by WellStar at Kennesaw University was a fabulous experience. HII provided me with exposure to Healthcare Systems, connections to industry leaders, and an introduction to medical business practices The program was followed up by another outstanding symposium in the fall, Piedmont Hospital's Advanced Technology Conference which highlighted a robot naming contest for the 21CL participants My essay was selected and published as the winner of Piedmont Hospital’s DaVinci Surgical Robot Since Piedmont Hospital uses da Vinci® Robotic Surgery to perform its surgeries, I decided to name this robot after one of Leonardo Da Vinci's paintings. Vitruvian, short for Leonardo Da Vinci's work titled "Vitruvian Man," depicts the strong relationship between art, science, and human understanding. Although a small success, knowing that a child will be able to live because of surgery done by a robot I named excites me to a level unimaginable 21CL Impact: Of all the outstanding lessons 21CL provided over the course of my participation, the most important leadership lesson I learned is that being a great leader does not just happen by birth or good fortune You have to work at it to become one, and that the great leaders 21CL has introduced to me all have three common traits that they continuously develop and perfect, Empathy, Strong work ethics, Team player.

Favorite 21CL Memory: My favorite memory is attending my first ever summer institute EarthCare At the institute, I had a lot of fun meeting and connecting with likeminded peers and mentors who share my values and vision for a more just and sustainable world for all and 21CL staff, Experts from Georgia Power, and volunteers who generously shared inspiring words of wisdom and invaluable

insights. Among the many highlights of one of the most unforgettable weeks of my life was our group project during which we were tasked with researching a community here in Georgia facing environmental injustice and working collaboratively as a team to develop equitable solutions that center diverse voices as well as the voices of those impacted in the decision-making process. I learned a lot through this project. As an action-oriented leader, I often find myself jumping ahead, so eager to get to the end goal that I miss out on the important, practical steps to get there. Through the project and working together, I learned a lot about budgeting and planning, what it takes to truly drive meaningful change from the ground up, thinking big picture but trusting the process and not rushing ahead without those practical steps My proudest moment of the week was that Friday as we gathered to present our project to Georgia Power employees and a panel of judges This project serves as such a profound and inspiring reminder that age is simply a meaningless number, we can all be part of the solution and the best teams are those which are intergenerational, where the voices of young people and adults are equally valued and centered in important conversations and the decision-making process, where there is no hierarchy or power dynamic, but rather a community of likeminded leaders making meaningful connections and leaning into moments of shared growth and learning as we all travel along this journey towards equity. Standing in that room with my group, this clicked for me in such a powerful way, and I will forever be grateful to the 21CL team, volunteers, professionals, and most of all my teammates who lost sleep with me over this project I am proud of us and thankful for what we accomplished that week, and more than anything grateful for the invaluable lessons I learned from this project 21CL Impact: Through deep and transformative dialogue at every fall summit surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), 21CL has provided important tools and helped me become more conscious of my own implicit/unconscious bias, which means I am able to understand more deeply how those biases might impact the decisions I make and/or the things I say and with awareness of such biases comes correction and progress. This has helped me as a leader to more effectively engage diverse teams and I am thankful to everyone at those summits who leaned into this transformative process and shared aspects of your personal stories that deeply resonate with me and which shape your perspectives in so many invaluable ways which deserve to be valued, never silenced and suppressed. Lastly, the best advice I have ever received is something I have heard often as a 21CL student, and words of wisdom which will continue to guide everything I say and do as I strive to be part of the solution These profound words are: "leadership is not about me, it is about you Leadership is not about you, it is about all those around you " Successful leaders are not the loudest in the room or the ones to speak first They are not the ones who pretend they know everything or who always seem to have all the answers These leaders are not effective because they have not mastered the art of listening Hearing these words for the first time all those years ago reminded me of the power of servant leadership, leading with others and the community at the center of all our decisions. In this way, 21CL reaffirmed and transformed my passion for volunteerism and is a big part of my commitment to community service and my love for giving back in any way I can, because when we are engaged authentically in servant leadership, we are making invaluable connections to our community, learning more about the challenges faced by our communities, and most importantly how we as 21st century leaders can be part of the solution in mitigating these challenges. Thank you 21st Century Leaders for reminding us that the best leaders are the ones with a heart for service and a vision for a more just and inclusive society for all
