Summer Leadership Institutes

21CL’s flagship program since 1991, the Summer Leadership Institutes are week-long leadership development and career exploration programs for diverse high school students from across Georgia. After two years of hosting Summer Leadership Institutes as adapted virtual programs, we returned to inperson programming in June and July of 2022. Three of our four institute programs took place on a college campus as a residential program, with 298 high school students across the state.

In addition to their dynamic program week, students were given free access to Leadership Connect for the school year so they can continue developing their leadership skills among an online peer community.

Since 2006, 21st Century Leaders and Warner Bros. Discovery, formerly WarnerMedia, have partnered on co-branded one-week summer leadership institutes, serving 1,547 students to date. Each year, 100 students are accepted to participate in this program at no cost. The virtual week-long intensive “All Things Warner Bros. Discovery” program is focused on leadership and media career development.

Warner Bros. Discovery Future Leaders Institute (FLI) takes diverse student-leaders through an exploration of media careers while they connect with professionals to learn about the company’s family of brands like HBOMax, news and sports media, production, animation, and comics. They then work in teams to create a new show idea with a corporate social responsibility plan and pitch it to a panel of judges. Students also engage with 9 customized modules in Leadership Connect such as “Warner Bros. 101” and “Warner Bros. Discovery Operating Model.” For this institute, students from Georgia, Los Angeles and New York City participated in the institute.

56% of students reported that their experience with volunteers at FLI included their first time seeing someone successful who looks like them in a career or position in which they are interested
