LETTERFROM EXECUTIVEDIRECTOR
KATE HEWITT
Dear 21st Century Leaders, 2018 was a transformative year for our organization as you?ll see throughout this annual report. It?s also a year that has set us on a new course in our leadership journey as we head into our fourth decade of service to the state of Georgia. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, ?Be the change you wish to see in the world.? While this quote is used frequently, I can?t think of a better one when it comes to describing the vision behind 21st Century Leaders. 21st Century Leaders was established in 1989 with the need to train a diverse group of young people with the right set of leadership skills and confidence necessary to enter college and ultimately the workforce Those needs are as important today as they were 29 years ago. 21st Century Leaders has remained one of Georgia?s premier youth leadership organizations because of our founding Executive Director Bob Watson?s leadership and unyielding commitment to youth development. Throughout the report, you?ll see remarkable outcomes from our students and programs, new partnerships and initiatives established, incredible volunteer numbers and engagement, and the launch of our piloted Summer Immersion Program. While Bob?s retirement in 2018 comes as a historical change for the organization, we believe that this change, along with our 30th anniversary in 2019, also brings new opportunities for us to take 21st Century Leaders to the next level.
I?m honored and humbled to serve 21st Century Leaders as its second Executive Director in the organization?s 29 year history. I look forward to continuing to build the legacy that Bob has created, expand our outreach across the state, engage our vast and accomplished alumni, and truly showcase the amazing impact 21 st Century Leaders has not only in Georgia, but all across the country where our students go on to live, work and lead. Thank you for your commitment to 21st Century Leaders. With your support I know we can continue to inspire youth to lead for years to come. Sincerely,
Kate Hewitt Executive Director

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT SYDNIECOBB
Meet Sydnie Cobb. A 21st Century Leaders' student and Youth Ambassador, president of her school's 21CL Youth Leadership Center, a 2018 21CL Georgia Youth Leadership Award (GYLA) winner and the 2018 Student Body President at DeKalb Early College Academy in DeKalb County. Sydnie is now a current freshman at Harvard University studying government Sydnie was a GYLA winner for her work and goal of advancing girls?education in Malawi by fulfilling the schools?sanitary napkin shortages. However, without any formal contacts in the country, Sydnie could not determine a cost effective way to deliver the supplies. Utilizing the skills and contacts she gained through 21st Century Leaders, Sydnie was able to connect with Patrick Solomon, a 21st Century Leaders?Board of Director and former Senior Vice President of Human Resources at the CARE organization. After pitching her idea to CARE, the organization, helped her idea become reality. Over the course of nearly 140 hours, Sydnie directly engaged with approximately 400 people across the Atlanta area to raise awareness about how the sanitary napkin shortage infringed upon the academic lives of girls in Malawi. Her project culminated with her donating $6,155 worth of sanitary napkins to 700
girls in the Kasungu region of Malawi. On a local level of impact, Sydnie hosted six sexual violence awareness panels and seminars, reaching over 2,000 people by sharing information and resources through social media. Sydnie says one of the greatest skills she learned through 21CL was public speaking. From elevator pitches to impromptu speeches, she says the programs prepared her for every circumstance of public speaking she will encounter in her professional life. "Prior to 21st Century Leaders, I was a timid student who had not tapped into or realized my leadership potential. After one week at a 21CL leadership institute, I remembered leaving feeling confident and empowered, ready to pursue any leadership opportunities that came my way. The confidence and empowerment I acquired from 21CL led me to represent my school as student body president, become a Georgia Youth Leadership Awardee, and earn my Girl Scout Gold Award." - Sydnie Cobb, DeKalb Early College Academy, Class of 2018

As we reflect on the legacy created in 1989 by a group of business professionals who were determined to train the next generation of leaders, creating a strong workforce and more well-rounded individuals, we can see it firsthand in our alumni network. With more than 14,000 lives altered for the better, hear from one man, Brent Gills, and what 21st Century Leaders created for him.
"What is something that most people take for granted? Family? Time? Well, how about opportunity?? -And it?s a shame that so many of us take opportunity for granted. Because without it, we wouldn?t have the chance to do what we do or have the things we have. I want you all to see the gravity of the opportunities that you?ve been creating within 21st Century Leaders. Now let me take you on a journey. The year was 2007, I was 16, had an un-nurtured love for science, but was known as the class clown because I did not take my future seriously. Then 21st Century Leaders and Georgia Power gave me the opportunity to attend an environmental sustainability/ leadership institute (EarthCare). It was perfect for me, because I knew I had an interest in being a scientist, and I had the natural ability to lead teams of people. I learned about power, different sources of energy, leading and working in teams with people who might not look like I do or be from the same Decatur neighborhood as me. I learned about public speaking, business and leadership etiquette, teamwork, and most importantly, networking. I lost my fear of talking to people and asking for advice or help, which in my experience is the most important thing you can ask someone for. 21CL taught me how to seize opportunities, and I brought that with me in 2009 when I was a freshman at Hampton University studying physics but was uncertain, hesitant about my choice because of the stress associated with becoming a scientist? Let me add that when I went on my college visit, a fellow 21st Century Leader alum came along with me, which speaks to the strength
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT BRENTGILLS
of our network. Speaking of networks, I even met my mentor Dr. Ramsey Smith, by giving my 21st Century Leader business card. Dr. Smith, a chemical physicist at NASA, played an instrumental role in my development as a scientist. Using many of the skills that I learned during my tenure as a 21st Century Leader, I was elected as SGA President at Hampton, where we initiated a Green campaign and brought 150% more recycling bins and other sustainability tools to our campus. But it started with opportunity. Without opportunity, people cannot succeed. I don?t care how self-made you consider yourself to be? it just wouldn?t happen. I can definitely say that 21st Century Leaders gave me the opportunity to do some of the things I?ve done. I hold two degrees in physics and just received my MIM at Wake Forest University, all while leading a consulting firm that a former professor and I started at the beginning of this year. My consulting firm, The Gills Consulting Group, focuses on STEM consulting and policy, and environmental sustainability, which is something I hold near to my heart. Your support ? whether volunteer, in-kind, or financial allows us to provide an opportunity to high school students across the state of Georgia. Thank you!" -Brent Gills Southwest DeKalb High School Hampton University Wake Forest University The Gills Consulting Group
