Making Farming Easier

May – June 2015

It looks to be a challenging year in agriculture. So what’s new, right? As we all strive to succeed in the ever changing and ever challenging environment of agriculture, we cannot assume that what we’ve done in the past is what we will need to do in the future. “Innovation” is the watchword—having both the willingness and the will to continually change, adapt, improve and evolve. That’s why we chose Innovation: Dollars & Sense as the overall theme of this edition of the 21st Century Equipment flyer. Innovation requires an investment of human and financial resources—that’s where the “dollars” come in. But innovation also has to make sense in a number of ways: Innovation has to make business sense. When you invest in equipment, services or technology from 21st Century Equipment, we work hard to make certain that investment is aligned with your

Innovation: Dollars & Sense

operation and your objectives. Innovation has to make economic sense. ROI is paramount in today’s ag marketplace. That’s why we offer a wide range of options and alternatives—from innovative financing through Panhandle Acceptance Company to a comprehensive suite of ISG services to a wide range of irrigation solutions. It’s about helping you maximize your investment in every aspect of your business with us. And finally, there is common sense. Innovation has to have a practical purpose. It has to get you where you want to go—faster, more efficiently, more profitably. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to add something new. It might simply mean learning how to get more out of the technology, equipment and services you already have in your portfolio. We can help you do just that. At 21st Century Equipment, we are committed to a continual culture of innovation. Having the resources and industry leadership of John Deere on our side is

a significant advantage, to be sure. The John Deere relationship allows us to bring you cutting edge technology, equipment and ideas that are simply unmatched in the marketplace. But it doesn’t stop there. We also encourage our people in every department in every one of our 17 locations to be open to new ideas, explore alternative solutions and think not only about what is, but also about what’s next. If we’re going to help our customers overcome challenge and capitalize on opportunity, we need to be thinking differently— all the time. What’s more, we are inspired and energized by the innovative farmers with whom we have the privilege to work. Our customers are big thinkers and creative problem solvers—working on the leading edge of agriculture, food production and stewardship. We look forward to working with you this season to transform innovation into dollars and sense for your operation.

Integrated Solutions Group News

Is it about getting the latest? Or getting the most out of what you have?

We’ve all seen the TV coverage of people lined up at the Apple store before dawn to get the newest version of the iPhone. Do you ever wonder how many of those people are simply out to be the first to get what’s new—and how many actually are using the full capabilities of the iPhones they already own? To me, this is a good reminder to all of us in agriculture as we work with the incredible new technologies we have at our disposal. Yes, there are new capabilities that have been recently added that can be incredibly helpful if you decide to upgrade to the latest and greatest. For example, wireless data transfer is relatively new—allowing you to manage data from your office or home without running from cab to cab with a USB drive. Wireless transfer also reduces the chances of losing data before it’s captured. But before you invest in the newest, we need to make certain that the data you’re managing wirelessly is the best it can be. That means making the most of the precision technology you may already have in hand. Are you leveraging your technology to create prescriptions for your fields? Are you taking the time to ensure your equipment is properly calibrated for the task you’re doing—planting, seeding or fertilizer application? Are your tractors set up with the right dimensions and offsets? Is your data clean and accurate? Are you not only gathering data, but using it to your greatest advantage to manage your operation and make “precision decisions”? All of these metrics and more likely already exist in the technology you have and it all can help you manage more profitably. Your local Integrated Solutions Group (ISG) consultant is dedicated to discovering your objectives and goals for your operation—and then levering the technology you have to help you achieve them. We can help you make sure you’re using the right technology to get the right data and the right results. We can help you analyze that data to get the answers you want—and probably get answers to questions you didn’t even know you had! If you haven’t made the move to precision technology in your operation, today’s regulatory environment, the new Farm Bill programs and tough commodity prices make the case for technology even more compelling. Better management, better information and better decision making are critical to compliance, risk management and profitability. Start by talking with your local Integrated Solutions Group consultant at 21st Century Equipment. But consider talking with the other advisors you count on as well—your seed provider, your fertilizer and chemical dealer, your agronomist. Learn more about how they might be able to take more and better information from your operation and use it to save you money or improve your yields. Regardless of your place along the curve, technology helps everyone related to your farm help you. So when it comes to technology, it’s not as much about keeping up with the Joneses as it is about keeping up with what’s happening on your farm—and getting the greatest return on the investment you’ve already made.

To Our Valued Friends & Customers... As the old saying goes... spring has finally sprung. We finally got some much-needed moisture across almost our entire area in the last couple of weeks, so I hope you were one of the lucky ones to get some rain! Let the corn planters roll. This issue of our Flyer is dedicated to technology and innovation and its financial impact on your operation. These same innovations have had a similar impact on our business... which his really all about taking care of you and your business. Innovation and technology advancements in agriculture have unbelievably transformed the way we are both doing business over just the past few years. We find ourselves today connecting crop production with equipment technology with agronomy advancements and business management tools...all done with the goal of profitably producing more product... notice I said “profitably”. Our goal at 21st Century Equipment is to take some of the confusion and complexity out of the myriad of technology decisions you face and to help you make meaningful decisions with the reams of production data you have accumulated. By assessing and analyzing your data, we can help you uncover critical insights that will enable you to increase your production or optimize the application of your inputs. The successful delivery of a fully integrated farm solution, that takes into account the current equipment technologies you already own, as well as our expertise in agronomy and crop science, is available through our Integrated Solutions Department. Our objective is to utilize the existing equipment technology that you have purchased and the agronomic data you have accumulated, to produce more. We have no other agenda than being your trusted partner when it comes to reducing complexity in your operation. Even with the downturn in equipment sales across the industry, we continue to see strong growth in our FarmSighttm products and services. With lower commodity prices, it is clear that many of you believe it is more important than ever to optimize your machine operations to help manage input costs to try to wring a profit out of this difficult production environment we are in today. I would suggest that one of the best investments you can make is to get our Service Department to assist you in optimizing the various innovative machine technologies you have available, so that you can allocate your various inputs (seed, fertilizer and water) to maximize your ROI on every zone, in every field. A key part of our solution-based support strategy is to make sure you have the latest in machine technology. While we have just started planting our corn crop, wheat harvest is right around the corner. With the downturn in equipment sales comes a tremendous opportunity to “trade-up” to a “Certified Pre-Owned” (CPO) S-Series Combine for tens of thousands of dollars less than it would have cost you last year. Any CPO unit comes with extended warranty, all the latest technologies enabled and can only qualify as “CPO” if it has passed a rigid inspection and all deficiencies are corrected. If maximizing your harvest potential, at a savings of tens of thousands of dollars compared to last year, sounds good to you, contact your local 21st Century Equipment Sales Professional. In closing, I want to thank you for your business as we both move through the challenging year we all have ahead of us. I believe our partnership, built on trust, technology and innovation, will allow both of us to succeed, not only this season, but be better positioned for what lies ahead of us in production agriculture in the future. Sincerely,

st

New leasing options provide opportunity to upgrade affordably with used equipment

In challenging economic times, leasing might be just the thing to help lower your costs, leverage your equity and upgrade your equipment portfolio. At this point, leasing can also provide a number of tax advantages. Unfortunately, the type and age of equipment that can be leased (rather than purchased on payments) has been pretty limited. Your options for leased equipment are now vastly improved thanks to new programs offered by 21st Century Equipment. When we purchased the Scottsbluff and Torrington locations at the first of the year, we also acquired the Panhandle Acceptance Company, which has given us—and our customers—incredible flexibility in terms of financing used equipment. Thanks to this innovative new capability, we can now offer leasing programs on equipment that other lenders tend to avoid—older equipment, tillage equipment, etc. As you consider purchasing or leasing used equipment from 21st Century Equipment, we urge you to think about more than the price tag or the payments. Just because a piece of equipment cost less to purchase doesn’t necessarily mean it costs less to operate. Furthermore, investing just a bit more initially might get you technology, efficiency and performance that can save you bigger dollars in the future. A $2,000 to $3,000 increase in payments could save you two to three times that amount in terms of seed and chemical costs, fuel efficiency or other benefits. For example, by trading your current planter for a newer pre-owned model with variable rate technology, you can save on seed costs while also improving your prospects for improved yields. With 17 locations, we can help you find the used equipment you’re looking for—with the right features and technology and at the right price. And now, we can help you even more with innovative leasing and financing that enables you to get even more for your money. We have two people whose only job is to buy and sell equipment on the wholesale market. If we don’t have the used equipment you need somewhere within our 17-store network, chances are we can find it within a matter of hours in our extensive network of nationwide connections—and have it on your farm within a matter of days. Contact us today to learn more about the new leasing options available on used equipment.

Tech Talk Keeping your cool when the heat is on We’ve already seen the wild swings in weather this spring

in many parts of 21st Century Equipment country— everything from snow to summer-like heat—within a day or two of each other. Your equipment has to cope with these changes as well, so here are a couple of tips that can help. We will typically receive a number of calls each spring related to the air conditioning systems inside tractor cabs. Customers say the system is not cooling the cab. Most of the time this is a pretty simple fix—it’s simply dirty air filters. Some tractor models are more susceptible to this problem than others, but the increased efficiency in air handling systems means that more air is flowing through the cab—and that means more dust is trapped in the filters. The outer engine filter and out cab filter should be cleaned daily. Removing the filters and pounding out the dirt, dust and debris should be sufficient. On a weekly basis, you should clean the cab recirculation filter located behind the seat. Take care of your air conditioning filters, and you should be able to keep your cool during the warm weather. Speaking of cool: On these cool mornings, it’s always a good idea to start up your equipment and let it run for 15 minutes or so before you enter the field. This allows the hydraulics to warm up and stabilize—and that reduces the variances in flow and pressure that can occur during operation if you start your engines and go directly to work. You’ll spend less time making adjustments on the fly if you just take a few minutes at the start of the day to let the equipment get warmed up. While the equipment is idling, walk around it to check all fittings, hoses, etc. Again, a little time spent each day double-checking the basics could help you avoid a timekilling breakdown in the field. And that’s the last thing you need when the heat is on!

Dealer Package for Value Added Services

Dealer Package includes: • No service call fees • Annual machine performance analysis • JDLinkTM website administration

3-3-1 or 3-3-3: Dollars that make sense for new equipment. When you’re looking to buy new John Deere equipment, you’re going to look at the numbers. Obviously, one of the first numbers you’re going to consider is the dollars—the cost of the equipment itself. But we also encourage you to look at the numbers related to our innovative enhanced service programs: 3-3-1 and 3-3-3. These programs are available on basically any new equipment that has a cab and an engine—from utility tractors to row crop tractors, sprayers to combines. Our 3-3-3 and 3-3-1 programs are further assurance that your investment in new equipment will pay dividends while it’s in your possession—and even when you trade it in. The first “3” represents the extended 3-year warranty on the engine and power train. That’s two years longer than the standard two-year factory warranty—and that means greater peace of mind that you’re covered in the event of a failure. The second “3” is your 3-year subscription to JD Link from John Deere. This robust telematics package tracks equipment usage, service and alert codes, fuel efficiency, and hours spent idling, on the road or in the field. These diagnostics help you anticipate and schedule maintenance—and they help you make sure the equipment you’re deploying is the right equipment for the job. The last number (3 or 1) is our 21st Century Equipment dealer support package, which you can purchase for either three years (3) or one year (1). This includes administration of your individual JD Link web portal and information and an annual performance analysis of your equipment. It also includes an annual winter inspection, which in itself represents a value of about half the total cost of the 3-3-1 or 3-3-3 program. Depending on which option you choose, all service call charges are waived for either one or three years as well—again, a significant value if you every have a service-related problem with the equipment covered under the plan. Speaking of value: Having this plan attached to your equipment enhances trade-in value, since the plan travels with the equipment when you trade it in. Any remaining coverage passes along to the next owner, so we can ask a bit more for the equipment— and you get a bit more when you trade. Add it all up, and the investment in a 3-3-3 or 3-3-1 service plan from 21st Century Equipment is dollars that make sense over the life of your equipment.

Harvest Options for Rural Broadband

Matt Larsen is the CEO of Vistabeam, a key fixed wireless provider for 21st Century Equipment, serving parts of Western Nebraska, Eastern Wyoming and Northeastern Colorado. Fast, reliable broadband access has become a necessity for nearly every business. Agricultural and rural businesses are just as reliant on broadband as urban dwellers and use fast access to the Internet for many purposes beyond browsing web pages and reading email. Broadband has become a replacement for the daily newspaper, delivering up to the minute crop and commodity prices, local and national news, detailed weather information and support services for many products. As broadband becomes more capable, it can also provide a replacement for television and telephone lines, remote data gathering and control, security videos and access to remote servers for advanced data analysis. The majority of Americans receive their broadband service over cable systems, but the options in rural areas are very different. Here is a breakdown of the broadband options that are available in rural areas. Fiber To The Home (FTTH): Fiber is considered to be the most desirable type of broadband connection. Fiber is fast and reliable but it is very expensive to install and maintain. Some rural telephone companies have deployed fiber networks to rural customers, but the areas that do not have it may have to wait for some time before it will be deployed. Fiber can reach speeds up to 100Mbps or even 1Gbps and is capable of delivering just about any type of service that can be delivered on the Internet. DSL: DSL service is delivered across the same copper wires that have been used for decades to bring landline telephone service to rural customers. DSL was once considered fast but is now on the slow side of Internet options available in rural areas, with speeds typically ranging from 1Mbps to 5Mbps, which means that DSL connections may not be suitable for online video or other advanced applications. With copper networks growing more expensive to maintain, DSL will be phased out in favor of other alternatives over the next few years. Satellite: In places where there is little or no broadband capable wireline infrastructure, satellite Internet has been the only alternative for getting service. The newest satellite broadband systems are capable of speeds up to 12Mbps, but they have high latency and the satellites tend to get overloaded during peak hours of usage in the evenings. Satellite services also have data caps, which limit how much subscribers can use the service, and can lead to extra monthly charges. The high latency and data caps limit their utility, but satellite systems are the only option for connectivity in many places. Mobile Wireless: With the advent of 4G networks, mobile telephone carriers are now capable of delivering broadband speeds in many rural areas across the country. The biggest advantage of mobile wireless is that it is available nearly anywhere inside of the carrier’s coverage area. If the device has a good signal, it is possible to check email or use mobile applications on the road, in the field or at home. 4G networks can reach speeds up to 25Mbps, but the mobile services have restrictive data caps that can lead to excessive charges and speeds can be very inconsistent Brent® Avalanche® grain carts have set powerful standards for depending on signal strength and how many users are on each tower. unloading speed, convenience, capacity and durability since Fixed Wireless: Many rural areas now have service available from a 1998. 21st Century Equipment is well-known for carrying the John Deere brand. But when it comes to talking dollars and sense, you should also be aware of our broad line of Honda equipment that can handle plenty of jobs on your operation efficiently and affordably. All 21st Century Equipment locations offer Honda Power Equipment, from walk-behind mowers to generators, from tillers to trimmers. Honda Power Equipment is well-engineered, well-designed and reliable over the long haul. Example: All string trimmers feature 4-stroke engines, so you don’t have to mess with a separate oil-gas mixture. That makes sense. Here in Sidney, we also offer Honda Power Sports equipment, which includes the lineup of ATVs and dirt bikes that many of our customers use to improve their efficiency on the farm or ranch—and, in the process, increase the life of their pickups. Whether you are farming or ranching, it just “makes sense” to use a Honda to help get the job done. Think about the wear and tear you can put on your pickup—bouncing along rows and pivot tracks to check your wells, or chasing across rough pasture to manage your cattle. With a Honda ATV or dirt bike, you can get where you need to go faster and with greater maneuverability. You can quickly ride down a cattle trail—or easily turn within rows of corn—without carefully and slowly picking your path. Many of our customers have told us that the money they saved on maintenance, repairs and stress on their pickups have paid for their Honda ATV or dirt bike—not to mention the time savings and speed with which they get more places more quickly. Honda offers the toughest automatic transmissions available, with either a 5-speed dual-clutch (DCT) or the 3-speed automotive type automatic transmission. Both are mechanical transmissions, so you don’t have to worry about belts breaking, slipping or wearing—costing you money and causing you problems. You can also choose an electronic push button transmission or a standard manual shift with auto clutch. You can configure your ATV to do whatever you need it to do—move snow, pull a trailer, etc. We can help you choose the right ATV and accessories to do the job. With a Honda ATV or dirt bike from 21st Century Powersports, you can extend the life of your pickup, move around with greater speed and flexibility, and enjoy savings in labor and time. And you can have a little fun as well.

Employee Achievements Sidney Location Manager Joel D. Hardy

Joel Hardy has joined 21st Century Equipment as Location Manager at the Sidney, Nebr. dealership. Joel has some 22 years’ experience in large equipment sales and customer service. Born in Alabama, Joel received his master’s degree in wildlife biology from Southern Illinois University. He worked for the federal government and then was a private environmental consultant until 1999. While consulting, he began selling Ditch Witch construction equipment and eventually went fulltime—moving around the U.S. in various sales and management capacities. Most recently, he sold Volvo construction equipment for a couple of years. While this position is Joel’s first foray into the agricultural sector, he says he’s up to the challenge. “Even though construction equipment and ag equipment do different things, it’s really all about solving problems and taking care of customers,” he said. “After spending most of my professional life selling the #1 brand in underground equipment [Ditch Witch], I’m looking forward to working with the #1 brand in agriculture, John Deere.” Joel said the reputation of 21st Century Equipment also drew him to his new position. “I think it’s a great advantage to customers to have the resources and experience of a larger dealer network at their disposal,” he said. “At the same time, 21st Century leadership and management are committed to a hometown, personal approach to doing business—and that is a rare combination indeed.” Joel and his wife Carole are excited to be in Sidney. Their 14-year-old daughter will enter Sidney High School. Their son will be a freshman at Utah State this fall.

Employee Training Awards With the development of new technology and high-performance systems for John Deere equipment, it is critically important that customers receive exceptional service from highly-trained product experts, technicians and aftermarket support personnel. 21st Century Equipment participates in a comprehensive training program with John Deere to help their employees reach certain standards of expertise. This ongoing training program is just one of the tools used by 21st Century Equipment to improve overall support and service to our customers in our trade area.

Water Technologies Low Energy Precision Application (LEPA) Call for more detailed information and pricing on this innovative product.

21st Century Water Technologies is your Irrigation specialist ... Making Every Drop Count

OUR TOLL FREE NUMBER: 1 800 432 8350 Innovation in Irrigation Takes a “LEPA” Faith

Sometimes being an innovator means taking a chance—not knowing exactly whether the results will be positive or negative. But 21st Century Water is bringing an innovation to Western Nebraska irrigation that is a proven winner. Low Energy Precision Application (LEPA) is a sound strategy for improving pivot irrigation efficiency, reducing energy costs and Making Every Drop Count. A typical pivot span has sprinklers spaced every 108 inches or so. With LEPA, the spacing is dramatically reduced to irrigate every row or every other row for those who desire to plant in a circle or can be reduced to any desired spacing for those who want to plant in the conventional straight row. But sprinkler spacing is only part of the story. The drop hoses on LEPA systems are significantly longer, sometimes extending as far as just 12 inches above the field surface. As a result, the sprinkler heads are under the canopy where the spray pattern is not affected by wind—and evaporation in the hot summer air is reduced. With standard pivot sprinkler placement, wind and evaporation can cause a 20% to 40% loss in water efficiency

Frank Landry

21st Century Water Technologies Location Manager

16

With LEPA, you can achieve up to 98% efficiency in water use compared to 70-80% (at best) with a standard pivot configuration under perfect weather conditions. When it’s windy, hot and dry, efficiency with a standard pivot drops off dramatically. That’s not the case with LEPA. Because LEPA places more sprinklers closer together along the span and those heads are closer to the soil surface, you don’t need as much water pressure to cover the field. Instead of generating 30 to 40 pounds of pivot pressure to push water through your system, LEPA can deliver optimal water efficiency with just 15 to 20 pounds of pressure. Think of the energy savings. When it comes to pivot irrigation, pressure equals money. Yes, there is a cost of entry in terms of the additional sprinklers and longer drops. And LEPA does require a bit of labor for plumbing. But when you’re looking at significant fuel/energy savings and using even less water more effectively and efficiently, LEPA makes Dollars and Sense. Water regulations and allocation are going to be with us and, in some areas, will become even more challenging and restrictive. Irrigators who get out in front of these water challenges through innovations such as LEPA will not only save money and water today, but will be well positioned to have a competitive advantage in the future. Contact 21st Century Water today to discover more about LEPA and other irrigation innovation.

Agriculture is one industry where what makes sense one year doesn’t the next. That’s certainly the case as we begin this season. This year, producers are facing a number of challenges and difficult decisions. Commodity prices are down, while input costs remain high. Cash flow quickly went from strong to strained virtually overnight. Conversations with bankers, CPAs and advisors have gotten a lot more serious. Producers are asking themselves questions about forward marketing, the cost-benefit analysis of inputs, and the wisdom of expanding their operation. In times when commodity prices are low and the overall attitude tends toward the negative, it’s important that producers look at controlling what they can control. It’s easy to get caught up in the negativity and static, but the best decisions are made in terms of what’s best for your individual operation and your cash flow. Your ability to control variable costs and produce more bushels for the same money (or less) is key to a sustainable, viable operation. One of the most capital-intensive decisions relates to upgrading equipment—and equipment is perhaps the most important investment you make in your operation. Up-to-date equipment in good working order is critical to your efficiency, productivity and profitability. Many producers are looking at equipment leasing as a sound strategy in getting the right equipment on their farm, without committing a lot of capital to making an equipment purchase. Conserving cash is the obvious advantage to leasing. Cash is king. Leasing allows you to hold on to more cash to take advantage of opportunities as you navigate through these challenging times. Leasing can help you lower your annual equipment costs, optimize depreciation and stabilize your balance sheet. But it’s not just about conserving cash. Equipment leasing helps eliminate the worry and burden of disposing used and outdated equipment. You are able to determine your true equipment needs before committing to buy. Leasing helps you reduce risk and improve your financial flexibility. Now that 21st Century Equipment has in-house leasing capability with Panhandle Acceptance Company, your leasing options are much broader and more flexible. There is no minimum purchase size and we can structure a lease on just about anything on our lot—from tractors to combines, from sprayers to tillage equipment. We’re able to lease older equipment that other lenders won’t even consider. Bottom line: We can help you put the right equipment and technology to work in your operation—and, with leasing, we can do it in ways that make a great deal of sense for your business and your cash flow.
