of these software modifications to his tractor. These modifications could come from a number of purveyors, some reputable, some not so much. The modifications could be wide and varied, from increasing engine horsepower to modifying operating parameters to tweaking the guidance systems. Now consider the consequences once that tractor is traded in. The next purchaser of that tractor (maybe you!) has no idea that the software or technology has been tweaked or modified. You think you’re buying one thing and are actually getting something else. The John Deere consistency, reliability and technology you depend on—possibly the main reasons you bought that tractor— suddenly are not what you think they are. Because of the integrated electronics and the intricacies of the software, modifications could lead to a number of safety concerns: The tractor might raise tillage equipment when you don’t expect it. A sudden change in direction could occur because the tractor believes it’s actually someplace else. There might be sudden shifts or surges in the engine or the tractor may quit working altogether. What if the data gathering technology you rely on to manage your operation

You may have read some of the recent online discussion about whether or not you really own your tractor, when the manufacturer retains ownership of the software in that equipment. Here’s our take on this discussion: There is no question that when you pay for a tractor, you own it. On the other hand, John Deere owns the rights to the software and technology running in the background in that tractor. And it makes sense that they do—for them and for you. There are reasons that manufacturers protect their software and intellectual property. First, they have made the investment in developing it and deserve to recoup that investment, profit from it and protect it. It’s the same with your smartphone. You buy the phone, but you license the operating system. John Deere wants the same protection for software on its tractors. But more importantly, there are issues of safety, consistency and customer confidence at stake. Let’s assume that the software on a John Deere tractor is provided in an “open architecture” environment—meaning that any number of software developers could offer modifications to the existing software. And let’s say that a farmer decides to add some

POSTAL CUSTOMER

David Oxford, a Service Technician at the 21st Century Equipment Imperial location, has worked with John Deere equipment since 1968. “The people I worked with became my extended family,” Oxford reflects on his years working as a technician and parts specialist. He started as a technician in Lexington, NE, working for KARRE Hay & Grain. He was there one year and then was called by the Army to do one tour in Vietnam that lasted from 1968-70. After he returned from the war, Oxford returned to his hometown of Oconto, NE, where he worked on their family farm. In 1972 he returned to the KARRE dealership for one year before taking a job as a ranch hand in Curtis, NE. In 1976, Oxford and his family moved to Enders, NE, and he began working as a technician at Midwest Farm Equipment in Imperial. David Oxford Oxford spent 25 years in the shop Retired at Midwest Farm Equipment before Imperial Service Technician transitioning into his role as a Parts Specialist; the same position he retired from June 1. “My favorite part of my job was the accomplishment of helping customers fix their equipment,” says Oxford. “I always took pride in that.” Oxford plans to do some traveling with Linda, his wife of 48 years. They already have a trip to Indianapolis planned for the Mobile Riverine Force Association (MRFA) Reunion in September. “It will be a lot of Navy guys and my branch of the Army that rode on their boats.” He also plans to do more traveling to see family across Nebraska. “I’ve got to quit working so much!” says Oxford. Since his retirement, Oxford has helping his son, Chad, with his service station, Triple O, in Imperial. He also is restoring his 1963 Chevy Impala SS. Oxford says he has enjoyed not having to be anywhere at a certain time the last month. Oxford’s retirement was celebrated with an open house and BBQ at the dealership in Imperial on May 31.

You don’t own the software in your tractor. And that’s a good thing. Here’s why.

has been changed and you’re not able to extract the information you need—or worse yet, you may not even know that the information you’re relying on is corrupted in some way? What if your data is being sent to an undesired place? When you come to have your tractor with its third-party modified software serviced by our technicians, we aren’t aware of what’s been done to that software in the past. You rack up service bills as we try to figure out what someone else did— and in the end, neither of us would have a high confidence level in the fix, assuming we find one. The fact is that when you buy a John Deere tractor, you’re buying performance, confidence, integrity and value—whether you’re buying new or used. That tractor is the whole package—iron, engine, technology and software— designed and engineered by John Deere and supported by 21st Century Equipment. It’s what green means. That tractor is yours without question. The software and technology to make in run like a Deere, however, are proprietary to John Deere. And when it comes to your safety, confidence and equity in the equipment, that’s a good thing. A very good thing.

RTK: Repeatability is the key to success The key to success in business is to find what works best and then repeat the process. That analogy works well when it comes to Real-Time Kinematic satellite navigation or RTK. With RTK, you invest the time and effort into configuring the system once—and then you can use those same settings repeatedly year after year. Roads don’t move. Neither do telephone poles and fence lines. But other differential correction methods such as SF1 or SF2 can actually drift over time. That means you have to reset your guidance lines, boundaries and end rows at least every year. That’s frustrating and time-consuming. With RTK, setting guidance lines is a “one and done” deal. Once they are set, you enjoy accuracy, “repeatability” and the confidence that your guidance system is dead-on. Since you don’t have to reset your guidance lines every year, you can use the time you save to do other important tasks during critical field activities. You’re relying more and more on the data you gather. RTK ensures even greater accuracy of that data, and that translates into greater prescription efficiency, better decision-making and down-to-the-millimeter accuracy. And since you don’t have to continually fiddle with the guidance lines, you can have even greater confidence that your data is accurate, consistent and reliable. 21st Century Equipment is dedicated to being the RTK leader in the markets we serve. As of this article, we have 56 RTK towers in our network and that coverage area will continue to grow as our customers continue to adopt this precise, repeatable and time-saving technology. If you’re ready to enjoy the accuracy and repeatability of RTK, contact your local 21st Century Equipment sales professional or ISG consultant. Check our new website www.21stcenturyequip.net for more information on RTK. At the risk of “repeating” myself, you owe it to yourself to check out the advantages of RTK.

Baler emergency leads to more green iron in Abbott operation from Gordon, NE.

Carver Abbott bales hay and a lot of it—about 7,000 big round bales annually. His first experience with a John Deere baler came as a result of an emergency. “The baler we were using broke down and we were in a pinch. We called 21st Century Equipment and within two hours they had a baler at our place,” he said. “Our experience with the John Deere baler prompted us to buy that one and another.” So why the switch to John Deere Carver Abbott and future farmer, Casey Abbott balers? show off their John Deere 6170R “They just bale the hay,” he said. “The simplicity of design reduces breakdowns and makes fixes easy. If something goes wrong, you just open up the door and within 30 seconds you know what’s happening.” Abbott Cattle has also purchased a Gator and a 6170R John Deere tractor recently. “The service and response have been awesome. Ross has done a remarkable job for us. He returns phone calls and when service issues occur, 21st Century Equipment has been johnny-on-the-spot. I see us adding more green iron to our operation in the future.”

Important Announcement for StarFire™ Network Customers The frequencies used by satellites to broadcast differential corrections to StarFiretm receivers are changing. While the corrections themselves will not change, they will be broadcast at a different frequency. This change is necessary in order to reduce the chance of interference caused by signals from other sources at nearby frequencies. That means you’ll need to take a few moments to change the frequencies received by your StarFiretm receiver.

RECEIVER

PRIMARY UPDATE METHOD

Original StarFire

Manually enter new frequency value (1545.9675) using GreenStartm display

StarFire iTC

tm

Depending on the type of equipment you have, you will need to follow a specific update process. It’s important to update your StarFireTM receiver prior to the satellite turn-off date for our area which is quickly approaching (July 15, 2015). Please ensure that your receiver(s) is prepared to receive the differential correction signal on the updated frequency immediately. If you don’t, your receiver will no longer be able to navigate using SF1, SF2, or RTK correction signals until the update is made. This means systems like AutoTrac, Section Control and documentation will not function without the update. Check with your local 21st Century Equipment dealership for more information or assistance with updates for your equipment.

To Our Valued Friends & Customers...

The old saying “when it rains, it pours” has never been more true. Remember back in March when we thought it would never rain again? What a difference the last few weeks have made on this year’s crops. It won’t be much longer until we start wheat harvest in the southern part our operating area, while at the same time, we are still trying to pick-up the first cutting of hay on the northern end... so there is lots going on around 21st Century Equipment. We know you have lots going on too, so that’s why we chose the theme for this flyer “Get ‘er Done”. Getting things done means providing you exceptional service beyond what you would normally expect at other dealerships. Let me discuss a few examples in the following paragraphs. With the start of wheat harvest also comes extended work hours in both the parts and service departments as well as 24/7 telephone availability for these departments to keep you up and running smoothly. On top of support from your local parts and service departments, don’t forget about our Customer Technical Assistance Center (CTAC). While this group of technical experts is located in Ogallala, they are available by touching the “Technical Assistance” option when calling your local service department or dial toll free 1-844-421CTAC (2822). In many cases, contacting CTAC with your technical questions may be your most expeditious way of getting the answers you need quickly. This support is just one of the ways we try to Get ‘er Done for you. Another way in which we help to keep you running is our Harvest Support Van. This 53-foot van trailer is currently staged at our Cheyenne Wells, CO location, ready for wheat harvest to begin. It is stocked with over $150,000 of harvest parts made up of stock that we would normally not inventory at our locations because typical demand does not justify doing so. However, recognizing that you may need one of these critical parts and that maximum uptime for you during wheat harvest is crucial, we have put this van trailer together. As wheat harvest moves north, so will the Parts Van. Access to the inventory of the Parts Van, as well as its current location, is available at all our Parts Department locations. This will be the last Flyer before the start of this year’s county fairs. As such, I want to wish all our 4-H and FFA exhibitors the best of luck in your various projects you will be showing. I also want to thank all of you that support 4-H and FFA as sponsors, advisors and leaders. These two organizations are stronger than ever and remain an important part of the rural life-style we all enjoy. As you see elsewhere in this Flyer, we have elected to support local 4-H programs with a contribution to every one of the local 4-H clubs in our operating area through the County Extension Offices. These contributions, in excess of $150,000 will be in lieu of our participation at the local livestock sales. This approach will not save us any money, but we believe it will provide a more equitable distribution of our support dollars for 4-H programs across the region. In closing, I wish all of you wheat growers a bountiful harvest... and the same to our hay and forage producers. As we move into this busy part of the summer, please keep the safety of yourself, and others, in mind. As always, THANK YOU for your business! Sincerely,

Owen Palm President/CEO

Now is a great time to update your equipment!

We all know that the agricultural landscape has changed over the past several months. Those changes have also had an impact on the equipment market—and that’s to your advantage. The price point on pre-owned equipment is extremely attractive right now. Thanks to this competitive pricing, you can update your equipment (and the technology that goes with it) with little or no increase in your payments or operating costs. If you need a new combine, tractor or sprayer—and you need it sooner than later—our certified pre-owned equipment program is a great option. You get the John Deere equipment you want at a competitive price. The equipment is thoroughly inspected, brought up to spec and comes with an extended comprehensive warranty. Pretty good deal. We’ve had good success recently buying competitively priced, pre-owned equipment that is not normally in our stock—unusual pieces such as forage harvesters and the like. This is due in large part to our extensive 17-store network and our connections nationwide. We’re constantly on the lookout for great opportunities to bring great equipment to our customers at a great price. Visit our new website at www.21stCenturyEquip.net to browse the used equipment we have on hand. If you don’t see what you need, talk with your local 21st Century Equipment sales professionals. We’ll start looking within our own 17-store network and beyond to find what you need. And when we know that what we’re looking for already has a buyer, we can get very, very competitive on both price and trade-in value. If you don’t have the time to wait for new equipment—or the budget to pay for it—our pre-owned line of equipment gives you plenty of great alternatives. And that inventory is changing almost every day!

Tech Talk Is your combine ready for wheat harvest?

The moisture this year has everyone running late. And that means you may not have had time to get your combine ready for wheat harvest. But it’s important to make sure your combine is up to snuff when the wheat harvest window opens—and that will happen sooner than you think. Get the combine out of the shed now and do a thorough inspection. Check all electrical connections and wires to make sure they weren’t gnawed by rats or mice over the winter. Grease all zerks and check all fluids. Make sure your sieve and chaffer adjustments will move freely before you get to the field and try adjusting them for the crop. Hook up the header you’ll be using and calibrate it appropriately. It’s best to do this in the yard, not in the field in order to avoid in-field issues that result in downtime. Sprayers also require a little preventive maintenance. Make sure the strainers are clean before and after use. This is especially important if the sprayer has been sitting unused for a while. There have been a number of PIP (Product Improvement Program) announcements this past winter related to recommended updates to equipment. You probably received these notifications in the mail. The majority of PIP upgrades can be completed with no charge to the customer—parts or labor. In many cases, these updates can be made right on your farm and typically take anywhere from a couple of hours to a half-day to complete. Several PIP notifications involve combines. It would be a good idea to get these handled before wheat harvest. There are also a handful of PIPs on John Deere sprayers, one of which takes the better part of a day to complete. If you know you’re not going to be needing your sprayer for a couple of days, give us a few days’ notice and we’ll schedule a visit to your farm to make the upgrades. They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. When it comes to getting your equipment ready to get into the field, an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of headaches. Instead of taking two aspirin, take two minutes to call your 21st Century Equipment service department to make sure your ready to hit the field when wheat harvest comes.

Harvest Connected Everything – The Internet of Things

Matt Larsen is the CEO of Vistabeam, a key fixed wireless provider for 21st Century Equipment, serving parts of Western Nebraska, Eastern Wyoming and Northeastern Colorado. The Internet of Things (IOT) is one of the fastest growing trends in technology right now. Put simply, IOT is connectivity for nearly device imaginable and the giant collection of data gathered from all of these devices. Two things have combined to make the Internet of Things possible – inexpensive devices with wifi capability and sensors built into them and widespread Internet connectivity. One of the common examples of an IOT devices is a programmable thermostat like the Nest, that enables the user to put together a program that optimizes the temperature within their house, turn it up and down remotely and also track those temperatures over time. I have a home scale that is connected to the wireless access point in my house. Every time I step on it, it collects my weight and BMI and uploads it to a server on the Internet. Using an app on my smartphone, I can track those two numbers over time to determine the ineffectiveness of my diet and exercise plan and try to motivate myself to do better. Smartphones are another example of IOT. Smartphones are constantly collecting data about location, apps used and websites visited, then uploading it to your service provider, phone manufacturer, operating system provider (Google for Android phones and Apple for iPhones) or the app vendor. Location tracking of phones was originally intended for 911 location of phones in emergencies, but it is now used by applications like Google Maps to determine traffic Increases Maximum Side Reach congestion and in many other programs to feed advertising to the phone user based on the user’s location and travel patterns. This data is also collected and sold to companies that use it for market analysis or research. Collection of this data is embedded in smartphones, and the only way to prevent it from being collected is to turn the phone off. When it comes to agriculture, the Internet of Things holds tremendous Patented Hydraulic Flow Control Spout potential. Farm equipment is using this type of functionality to notify owners about system problems, service intervals and recalls or upgrades available. GPS enabled “smart” tractors combine geolocation and soil data to optimize planting and fertilizer application. Connected security systems and cameras can be used to monitor remote locations and check crop progress. Small, connected sensors gathering information about rainfall, soil temperatures, humidity, ph and many other data points can be utilized to put together optimal growing profiles for fertilizer application, irrigation planning and determining the best time to plant or harvest. Agriculture is primed for an information overhaul, helping farmers and ranchers optimize their productivity and be more efficient with their resources. The capabilities of IOT are also enabling more efficient use and tracking of natural resources. My company, Vistabeam, is working on a project Since 1960 with the North Platte Natural Resources District to collect information on water consumption in Western Nebraska. Currently, NPNRD • Excellent Cleanout collects water consumption data once a year by sending employees into the field to read water meters. It takes a considerable amount of • Computer Balanced Auger time and manpower to read over 2000 meters and this only provides • Patented Hydraulic Flow Control Spout one data point over 12 months. Under the new project, smart meters are installed at the wells and upload several times a day to servers • Balanced Tongue Weight through the Vistabeam network. This allows the NRD to track water • Heavy Duty Driveline consumption data on a daily basis and they are developing apps that will allow producers to track this same data to • Unique Auger Design! use for irrigation planning. Tracking this data will enable the NRD and agricultural The unique auger design puts the users to be more efficient users of water unloading spout next to the tractor cab, and can serve as the basis for improved ELECTRONIC WEIGH SCALE SYSTEMS agricultural practices in the future. making it easier for the operator to see Accurate to within Internet of Things is just beginning to gain ONE-HALF PERCENT. whats going on while unloading. popularity, and it has a tremendous amount Optional Dot Matrix Printer or Data of potential to impact how we live and Transfer System allows you to print work, even in our rural, agricultural receipt or download and store areas.

Donations 21st Century Equipment to Donate Thousands to Local Extension Offices

New 2015 Planting Equipment Innovative features from cab to closing wheel

For years, 21st Century Equipment has been a strong supporter and advocate of youth leadership and development programs—especially 4-H and FFA. We have typically shown that support by participating in the livestock auctions at the county fairs in the markets we serve. This year, we’ve decided to redirect our financial support to the county extension offices that serve the youth and the customers in the communities we serve. We will contribute $1,500 to the extension offices in each of the counties in which we have dealer locations. We’ll also contribute $1,000 to extension in each of the adjacent counties. A list of county extension offices to which 21st Century Equipment will be contributing this year accompanies this article. “By providing financial support directly to the various county extension offices, we believe we can have an even greater impact on more young people and support more programs on the county level, said Owen Palm, CEO of 21st Century Equipment. “The county offices know where our contribution can make the biggest difference on the largest number of young people. That’s important to us and to the future of the rural communities in which we do business.

21st Century Equipment reserves the right to limit bulk oil to service to customers within our area of responsibility.

Without fluids and lubricants, all that iron on your farm comes to a grinding halt. That’s one reason having a supply of key fluids and lubricants right on the farm is becoming more and more common among our customers. 21st Century Equipment delivers a wide range of products including general engine oil and hydraulic oil. Many customers are adding bulk deliveries of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to their farm. We provide bulk DEF for all brands of equipment, including diesel trucks and semis. Bulk delivery and on-farm storage saves money in terms of the per-gallon cost. You save time by not having to head into town when you need product. You also enjoy the peace of mind that you have an adequate supply of critical lubricants and fluids right on your farm when you need them. We have a consistent delivery schedule in all of the markets we serve. You count on us being in your area at least once per month. We’ll put you on our regular route and top off your tanks when we visit. You can also make special arrangements with us if necessary. We can even help set up bulk storage tanks on your farm. We stock some very popular on-farm storage systems and the pumps, hoses and other components you need. These onfarm systems are easy to manage, take up a small footprint, and well-engineered for environmental safety and product integrity. We really want to be your one-stop-shop for all your lubricant and oil purchases. We’ll work with you to determine your equipment requirements and your maintenance schedules. Then we’ll come up with a bulk delivery and on-farm storage program that makes economic sense for your farm. And don’t forget that we provide a wide range of additional parts and components critical to your equipment’s lubrication and fluid systems—from filters to hoses to clamps. Agriculture is our most important market, for sure. But we’re also providing bulk deliveries to county government, service stations and repair shops. I guess our reputation for competitive price, high quality products and outstanding customer service is being recognized beyond the farm! Talk with your local 21st Century Equipment dealership about adding bulk oil delivery.

Water Technologies Eventually, the “rain, rain will go away.” Make sure your pivot is ready to rock. In most years, we’d probably already be watering by now. But this year, Mother Nature has decided to be overabundant with rain for most of us. But we all know that, at some point, we’re going to be kicking on those pivots. So now is the time to check your pivots before you really need them. The thunderstorms we’ve been experiencing can cause problems with your pivot. Each year, we get dozens of calls to repair damage caused by lightning. That damage is even more extensive if the pivot is running during the lightning strike, since current is traveling through the pivot during operation. Sensor Guard is a great product that offers protection for your pivot. It senses static electricity in the air (a precursor to a lightning strike), it automatically shuts down the circuit on the pivot. During irrigation season, you might be out checking your pivot systems on a daily basis. But just because one pivot was operating properly when you checked it, doesn’t mean that something didn’t go wrong 20 minutes after you left. Telemetry products such as the AgSense Field Commander, Valley TrackerSP, or the Valley BaseStation3 are a good strategy for managing multiple pivots from a remote location. You can log in on your laptop, tablet or mobile device and see everything you need to know about every single pivot— whether it’s moving, direction and speed, where it is in the field, whether the pump or endgun(s) are on or off, etc. Any of the telemetry devices will immediately alert you of any change in the operation of the pivot by email, text, or phone call. And, if threatening weather is on the way, you can remotely shut down all pivots to avoid serious damage. Telemetry also means you can shut down those pivots without risking your own safety by being out in the open during a storm. If you haven’t already, now is also a good time to check the drive train on the pivot before the crop gets in the way. Make sure there is gear oil in those gearboxes and center drives and there are no leaky seals. Check air pressure, tread integrity and determine if there is serious weatherchecking on the tires. Few things are as miserable as slogging out into a wet cornfield in the heat of summer to change a tire or gearbox. Finally, don’t forget to grease those pivot points and corner arms. At 21st Century Water Technologies, we know we’ll be very busy once our customers starting firing up their pivots. Ask us to make sure yours is ready to go right now so you can avoid delays when you really need to water.

(l-r) Blake Afdahl, Kadra Clark, Bryan Lemmon and Jared Lemmon

Four Goshen County competitors qualify to compete at National Junior High Finals Rodeo Blake Afdahl, Kadra Clark, Bryan Lemmon and Jared Lemmon have earned a position on the Wyoming National Junior High rodeo team. Bryan and Jared Lemmon are sons of the Torrington 21st Century Equipment Location Manager Don Lemmon. Clark qualified in the goat tying, pole bending and barrel racing. Jared Lemmon qualified in the team roping and breakaway roping. Bryan Lemmon qualified in the team roping. En route to a national finals qualification, Afdahl and Jared Lemmon teamed up to win the state championship in the team roping and Clark was the state runner-up in the pole bending. This is the second national qualification for Afdahl and Clark. The Wyoming Junior High Rodeo Association (WJHRA) season concluded May 15 in Casper at the WJHRA state finals rodeo. Featuring roughly 1,000 contestants from 42 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia, the NJHFR is the world’s largest junior high rodeo. In addition to competing for more than $75,000 in prizes, NJHFR contestants will also be vying for more than $100,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named a National Junior High Finals Rodeo National Champion.

Farming and ranching are definitely presenting us with plenty of challenges of late. The weather won’t cooperate and yet again, we are staring down another cash flow challenge as our planting window is getting smaller and smaller with every drop of rain we get. I don’t need to share any more negativity than we have seen so I am going to shine some light on great opportunities that we are seeing in the house. As you have been reading in prior publications, we offer an outstanding inhouse lease product. As the environment both outside and financially have changed in the past 12 months, leasing has come back as a very viable option to get you the equipment you need to get the job done and stay ahead. If you think this is a long, drawn out process, think again – this can happen fast! I want to share a great example of just how fast a recent deal was put together, helping out a farmer in a pinch:. Monday 8:08 a.m. - Receive a call from a salesman in one of our Colorado stores. His customer had traded a 12-row planter for a 24-row last fall and was concerned with the rain that they wouldn’t get planted. We still had the customer’s 12-row in inventory. Monday 8:12 a.m. - I provided the salesman with a few leasing options on the planter Monday 8:24 a.m. - The customer called his CPA and the CPA said that it would be a great idea to lease the 2nd planter as he could use the payment as a tax write-off. Monday 8:44 a.m. - Documents arrived via the printer in the salesman’s office. The customer signed the lease. Monday 9:15 a.m. - The customer was planting a small section alongside his son in the 24-row planter. Elapsed Time: 1 hour, 7 minutes. Of course not every deal happens this fast, but you get the idea. Not only does a lease make sense financially, it also can save you in a pinch. Allowing the equipment to pay for itself and then some is more than just good business sense. With our in-house leasing capability, there is no need for the back -nd-forth with a third party lender. We make the decision and work with you to make the payment fit your budget. We have the inventory and ability to get you what you need and out the door the same day—if not the same hour. Do yourself a favor and let the professionals at 21st Century Equipment do what they do best: Find you great equipment at a price you can afford.

We see these QR codes all over the place, but what you rarely see is an explanation of how they work. Well, it’s actually pretty easy... but you have to have the right tools. To use QR codes, you must have a smartphone equipped with a camera and a QR code reader/ scanner application feature. If you don’t have one, all you have to do is visit your phone’s app store (Android Market, Apple App Store, etc.) and download a QR code reader/scanner app. So, now that you have the tools you need, let’s get to scanning. Go out and find yourself a code (like the one below). Get out your phone and open the app you’ve downloaded or that it came with. Do your best to steady your hand while the QR code is centered on the screen. Voila, as soon as it is done scanning, whatever information, videos, webpage URL’s, etc. were stored in the QR code should present itself for your viewing pleasure. Simple as that.
