A Note From Owen E Q U I P M E N T
January 10, 2017
To Our Valued Friends & Customers...
First off, let me start by wishing you a happy New Year and thank you for your business this past year. Let’s put the challenges of 2016 behind us and make 2017 a year to remember! As last year ended and we moved into 2017, we have certainly paid for that unseasonably warm weather in October and early November! I’m ready for spring! Speaking of spring, realistically, now is the time to be developing your plan to control your destiny for the next growing season. A couple of weeks ago, I heard one of the best definitions of precision farming that I have heard yet. This person defined precision agriculture as “the process of making a good farm better”. That’s pretty good right? Learn what practices work and which ones don’t on your farm...practices that get you repeatable and consistent gains in yield. But easier said than done! So if you are just starting on the precision farming journey, how do you get started? Take baby steps! First, ensure your equipment can record the field work being performed. Most new John Deere equipment is ready and your older John Deere equipment can be updated. Start with harvest data if you can – it’s the easiest to understand and you can grow from there. As you progress down the precision farming path, review your “as-applied” data (planting, crop nutrition and crop protection data). Comparing these “layers” with harvest yield data may start providing you insights... what works best on your farm over multiple years of data. Use that field data to control your equipment to maximize yield and minimize costs with tools like variable rate controllers to precisely manage inputs and sectional controls to minimize expensive overlap. The final step (and most crucial, in my opinion) in the precision farming journey is sharing your data and results with your trusted advisors – your seed salesman, your fertilizer crop protection professionals, your agronomist, your crop scout and your lender. They already know your operation. Take advantage of their expertise to further refine your plan for next season. So where do we, as your equipment provider, fit in this precision farming process? We want to help you build your data tool box and assist you in data collection by making sure that tools, such as the Gen4 Command CenterTM and the GreenstarTM 2630 Display are operating correctly and recording data as field work is performed. We can also assist you in easily moving the data that you are collecting to your trusted advisors using JDLinkTM Connect or Mobile Data Transfer – no USB sticks that get lost – JDLinkTM Connect is wireless and provides an easy data transfer pipeline to the John Deere Operations Center where you can access your data anytime and share it with whomever your wish to collaborate with by simply giving them access. Our Integrated Solutions Specialists are there to help you on the precision farming journey. I urge you to take advantage of their agronomic expertise and equipment expertise to ensure your equipment is ready to execute the plan you have developed. My final thought is that once you commit to going down the precision farming path, that it is a journey, not a destination. As both you and our dealership proceed down this path, we have, and will continue to find new challenges and opportunities, but together we can figure them out! Here’s to a great 2017! Sincerely,
Owen Palm President/CEO

When it’s time to make hay, time is of the essence. NEW Frontier WR54 Series, Heavy Duty, High Capacity Wheel Rake
$21,500
Seventeen large (60-in.) diameter wheels on the WR54 Series efficiently gather more crop into bigger windrows for quicker drying and easier baling. The working width allows more acres to be covered faster so full advantage can be taken of ideal weather conditions. One hydraulic remote and an electrical control box handles all functions from the tractor cab. A master control allows lifting the rake wheels independently or both at the same time. Windrow width can be adjusted hydraulically to 72 in. Rake beams quickly adjust to set the rake wheels from 0 to 8 degrees.

Commodity Markets 2017 Marketing Plans Marketing your production is arguably one of the most difficult tasks you face each year. The exception to this came during the ethanol expansion when record high prices were being recorded and the process of marketing was relatively easy. Through that period, there were even times when delayed marketing decisions paid dividends due to higher prices on the horizon. Those days are now but a distant memory as we move into yet another year of burdensome supplies and compressed margins, all the while hoping markets can provide some decent opportunities. After the most profitable period in the history of agriculture, how did we get here so quickly? The dramatic price declines from cycle highs were driven by a massive ramp-up of production during the commodity super-cycle. Anyone with access to a piece of dirt wanted to participate in the record high prices. We are now in a situation that, short of a production-reducing weather event in a major growing region, will take some time for demand to catch up with the expanded global production capacity. No one knows if this ugly period will last two or five more years, but it certainly appears that 2017 could prove to be another challenging year. The downside of the cycle has been severe, and a structured approach to production marketing is critical to an operation’s survival and sustainability. A structured approach requires a marketing plan and the discipline to execute the plan as designed. Your challenge is developing a plan that fits your operation, and in this article, I will cover a few basic steps that are foundational in the process. Let me start with what I consider to be a fundamental market truth. There is no one who knows, with consistency, where markets are headed. As much as we would like to find the market analyst who always calls things right, that person just does not exist. If by chance there are folks out there who have actually honed that talent, neither you nor I will ever know them. The logical alternative to a fruitless search of a market mastermind lies in developing a marketing plan that is geared toward profitability. With that market truth in mind, we will cover a few key steps in developing a solid marketing plan. The first and most critical is determining your cost of production, and only you can crunch the correct numbers for your operation. Across the western Corn Belt there is at least a dollar range in breakeven costs for raising corn. Using a generalized number or even your neighbor’s cost of production may not be close to reality for your operation. If this is a new exercise, you can find comfort in knowing that it isn’t all that difficult. Use your last year’s expenses as a benchmark and make appropriate adjustments for changes in 2017. There are a couple of rules you should follow in developing your cost of production. First, base your calculations off of your APH production. This is what your farm is capable of producing on average and using a normal yield provides the most
accurate forecast possible. Second, other than on your share-crop acreage, always plug in a realistic land expense. For cash rent acreage, that is the number. If you have owned land, using a local cash rent value is a logical approach that allows you a return on your land investment beyond operational revenue less expense. The next task is setting in place action steps for making sales and initiating hedges. Although accurately forecasting markets is next to impossible, one needs to assess the big picture of the markets you are dealing with and make some assumptions of what prices may be possible in the coming marketing cycle. This entails an awareness of current cycles and trends as well as support and resistance areas on longer-term charts. For example, the corn market has developed a rocksolid resistance area around $4.50 based on frontmonth futures. With corn carryout projections growing significantly from last year, it seems logical that pushing above $4.50 futures will require some serious production issues in 2017. Considering current projected ending stocks, it may be wishful thinking that the corn market will once again push into the $4.50 area as it has the past couple of years. This type of big picture analysis lays the framework in your marketing plan for what price to start sales, what percent to sell and where to layer in subsequent sales targets. Also included in the big picture analysis should be a determination of potential price risk. No one likes to dwell on the negatives but this part of laying out your plan is critical. You are basically pegging a possible low price for your commodity in the event there are no weather issues, production is strong around the globe and ending stocks continue to build. Using whatever low you assume possible as a worst case scenario, compare this to your breakeven for a basic shock test to your operation. The question becomes, “What would it do to my operation if I had to move a significant amount of production at this price point?” This exercise arms you with a picture of where foundational put option hedges (price floors) could be employed. Put options provide a safety net for a worst case scenario -- quite simply, they buy you time to see what opportunity the market is capable of providing in the future. Financial goals should be considered in the development of each annual marketing plan as well. The big picture analysis we just covered certainly plays into the annual determination of financial goals. If you establish financial goals for 2017 that are similar to the goals you may have set in 2013, odds are you will be greatly disappointed. Your goals need to logically fit what the market may provide for opportunity in the upcoming marketing cycle. For many, a goal in 2017 of not losing ground with working capital might represent an improvement over last year’s marketing and achieving that goal provides operation sustainability for when the agricultural landscape improves.
Once a plan is formulated, action steps need to be implemented. If you do not plan on retiring anytime soon, you should always have a sales target working, either with a buyer of your choice or inside your own hedge account. Getting the futures price fixed on production (a sale) is the most impactful item of a marketing plan, and having resting orders in place above the current market is the best way to make sure that happens. It is an out of sight, out of mind type of thing. Do the work, develop your plan and make sure you follow through by having appropriate orders in place and working at all times. I began with a market truth and will end with another one, which also happens to be our 10th rule on AgWest’s “Top 10 Marketing List”. This rule reads: “Perfection in marketing is undefinable and therefore unachievable— Marketing plan success should be gauged against individual goals rather than Chicago price action.” This rule, for many, requires nothing less than a paradigm shift in how production marketing is viewed. Think about this. If you generally gauge your marketing results against the annual price range in Chicago, you will seldom be happy with your results. Basically, no matter where the market moves, you can easily feel you have either sold too much or not enough. A better benchmark to marketing success is whether you followed your plan as designed and determining if you actually achieved the goals you laid out at the beginning of the year. Accomplishing your goals deserves celebration. This is a difficult mental shift to make, and it takes some time and effort. Although difficult to achieve, this mindset is monumental and opens the door for life-long improved marketing results. Once mastered, you will find that you feel in control of, rather than being frustrated by, the process of production marketing. There are other rules and contingencies that should be followed concerning production marketing but these few items go a long way toward laying the cornerstones for a successful plan. Over the years, we at AgWest have developed our “Top 10 Marketing Rules” list that can be requested through our website at www.goagwest.com or by emailing me directly at sknuth@goagwest.com. Steve Knuth is CEO of AgWest Commodities based in Holdrege, Nebraska. AgWest has assisted agricultural producers with marketing plan development and price risk management since 1999. Develop Your Business; Control Your Destiny
“Destiny has a part to play in your life and in your business - so give it a chance to work - Think like a Champion – Donald Trump in a Facebook post (2014). Whether you like President-elect Trump or not, there is a lot to think about in that post. Webster says destiny implies something foreordained and often suggests a great course or end. Webster also says “fortune is a want to control his/her own destiny. Why am I telling you this? What separates the successful from the unsuccessful is how a person reacts to each new twist of fate. There are a lot of uncertainties out there right now, especially in agriculture. Are we doing the right thing, using the right tools? Is my business as efficient as it can be? Am I getting the most out of my investments? What is my actual cost per bushel? Those uncertainties can be turned into fortune for you. You have to want to “control your own destiny. Have you sat down and really thought through what that next level for your operation could be? Is it variable rate seeding/fertilizer? Maybe it’s water management, data management, machine optimization or maybe you just want to upgrade your GPS to RTK. With farming, there are a lot of things we can’t control. Wait! Hold on. Actually, we can control many things! If you don’t think you can control certain aspects of your business, come talk to us. Technology has exploded in the past 10 years for the ag sector and has taken us down the fast track to be more agronomically sound, economically feasible and environmentally safe. To be a successful farmer today, requires knowledge of advanced technology, educational preparation and business skills. We can control things like our input allocations, mechanical systems, soil nutrients, plant hybrids, marketing and the when and what goes where. So if we can control these things, then why don’t we take action now to control our future? There is a need to constantly strive to be better and compete or we will be left behind in this ever changing world. Technology is our tool, and that is what we specialize in! We have put a lot of effort into things like our RTK network, soil moisture probes, soil EC and many precision services like Rx creation, data management and machine optimization. When times are tough, we can help you use these technologies to make informed decisions and become more efficient in every aspect of your business. There is probably untapped potential that you haven’t unlocked in the technology you have. It could be overwhelming, foreign, scary, or you just don’t have the time to use it. But you aren’t alone. Our team of ISG Consultants are ready to help. We can provide you with the tools and advice to take you to that next level. We see the ever important need to have a trusting partner in your operation. Whatever your need, we want to make sure we are providing you with top notch support. We know that every operation is different and we will tailor our services to what is most important to you. From our family at 21st Century, we want you to succeed and be prosperous, so we have and will continue to center our business on developing solutions and delivering success for you, your business and our communities. My questions to you are: What are you doing to develop your business and take it to the next level? What can you do to control your own destiny?

Leasing Develop Your Business The calendar has turned and the year is past us. It is time to assemble the final numbers, review the balance sheet, and make solid projections, adjustments and plans for the next operating year. The last few articles, I challenged you to begin to get a grasp on your real cash flow. That is the dollars you have at the end of the cycle after your revenue has been settled and your expenditures have been made. Understanding your situation, your opportunities and taking action will be the key parts of developing your business that ultimately control your destiny. I would like to offer a few tools I have to my readers that can really help in understanding your baseline and how key changes to the operation can drive cash flow. Please email me at chuber@21stcenturyequip.com and I will send you an annual projection template. I have provided this outstanding tool to my customers for over 10 years. I have developed the spread in a way that allows livestock and grain producers to change a combination of revenue and expense factors which analyzes the impact to the bottom line income. This tool really will help you determine what changes need to be made in your operation to be the most profitable possible. We have a few other tools that I think could really help. We are offering some great lease options right now. We paired up some great pieces of equipment and are offering a “package” special. These are units that work well together and are priced to move quick. If you have equity in a trade, then there is a great chance that you can walk away with no down payment. As an added incentive, with a signed lease agreement on one of our package deals we are gifting a BONUS $1,000 credit that can be used in house. That is correct, we will credit your A/R $1,000 to be used towards parts or service of your choice. Don’t pass up this unique opportunity on the limited number of combination packages. Last, but not least we are still offering our $1,000 down special and we have expanded it from planters to sprayers. We have producers that don’t want to wait until the last minute to get their planter or sprayer set up and ready. Yet they don’t have the cash on hand yet to close the deal. We want to help you be prepared! On a select number of planters and sprayers, we are offering $1,000 down and the remaining advanced lease payment in March for planters and May for sprayers. This will give you time to get the equipment you need and get it set up and ready. We are here to help and truly want to be part of developing your business. Remember, send me an email and I will get you a copy of the projection template. Look over our great selection of used inventory and don’t be afraid to give your local sales professional a jingle and tell him you want a lease quote. I guarantee you we will be able to find the piece at a payment you can afford. Good luck in 2017 and as always, thank you for your loyal support in 2016! Cory Huber

Pariset Farms is constantly looking for better ways to conserve moisture with their sandy soils and improve their farming practices. They demonstrated a John Deere 2623VT vertical tillage machine this year and “we have been able to eliminate three machines, a stalk chopper and a disk with a packer. This has saved us time, Dianna Pariset along with Kristen and Larry Lund display money and manpower,” states Larry. “It did a their new John Deere 2623VT machine. Not pictured is Toby Murphy, salesman from Yuma. great job sizing the stalks and tying the residue down so it won’t blow.” As they continue to move towards strip-till practices the John Deere 2623VT machine solved their residue handling issues. “The dealership helped to provide us solution and they really are making farming easier,” comments Kristen. Pariset Farms LLP has been farming south of the Eckley, CO area since 1928. Vic Pariset passed away last year but his family has been committed to maintaining and improving the farming operation that was so important to him.

Soil Management Make the most out of your inputs with EC Soil Mapping
All soils consist of sand, silt & clay. The difference between soils is their percentage of these properties & the types of clay that constitute them. Sand, silt, & clay have different conductivity or resistivity which is measured by the EC instrument. Electrical current is introduced into the soil and resistance to the current is read back by the device continuously as it travels across the field. The variations in the readings indicate changes in the above properties as indicated by the soil water holding capacity. The maps on the left are different geo-referenced data sets of the same field. The map on the far left shows the variation in the soil properties as defined by EC measurement/ collection and the map on the right shows the soil type variation as defined by NRCS. Both sets of data are viewed within Apex software and can be used to help define management zones for various operations within the field. The accuracy of the EC map is greatly improved compared to the soil type map.

• Precise map that can be used in variable rate fertilizer, lime, seeding & irrigation applications. • Can help determine correct placement of soil moisture monitoring devices • Maps are more accurate than satellite imagery or standard NRCS soil maps • Viable for long time periods (10-20 yrs). Change of EC properties happens only with dramatic land leveling or extreme erosion. EC data collection/measurement is typically performed in the early spring time frame after frost has exited the ground & prior to irrigation & planting operations or in the fall (weather permitting) after the crop is removed from the field. *Fields must be relatively flat to permit utility vehicle travel across the field. Heavily plowed or ripped conditions inhibit consistent vehicle speed & can result in instrument damage. Crop residue does not inhibit EC collection unless it is extremely dense and/or deep (water or wind deposition or residue windrowing from harvesting operations).

At 21st Century Equipment, we’re always trying to find ways to reduce cost of production, increase productivity, or reduce risk. If we achieve one, or all, of these goals, we feel that we AND our valued customers are in a better position. With Simplot Solutions as one of our many partners, we’ve begun testing things like planter speed, seed placement, tillage practices, hybrid selection, fertility, and variable rate irrigation. In 2016, our joint effort included a small pivot of corn where we strip tilled the field, planted anywhere from 5-9 mph using high speed technology from Deere, and heavily utilized variable rate technology for seeding, fertility, and water. We used EM mapping to help us determine management zones for hybrid selection, yield goals, plant population goals, fertility plans, and a prescription for water based on the zones created. Hybrid selection alone can swing yield as much as 50 bushels/acre, so Simplot selected the 16 varieties they felt would perform the best on this field. On average, the recommendation for N is 1.15 – 1.22 pounds per bushel. In 2016 testing, using yield data, proper hybrid selection, and precision technology, our average rate was much less, and we ended up with similar yield results compared to flat-rating at the higher application rate. Many more technologies were used, such as soil moisture probes and satellite imagery, to help us manage this field throughout the growing season and better prepare us to achieve a higher level of productivity in the years to come. In 2017, we intend to expand our partnership with Simplot Solutions, with test plots in the Alliance, Scottsbluff, Holyoke, Fort Morgan, and Burlington areas. Our common goal is to continue to find ways to grow productivity out of each acre and/or reduce cost of production so we can help our producers prosper.

Kropp from Holyoke receives Farm Steward of the Year-Innovator Award Congratulations to Casey Kropp who was honored at the Colorado Corn Annual Banquet with the inaugural Farm Steward of the Year-Innovator Award, presented by both the Colorado Corn Administrative Committee and Colorado Corn Growers Association. Having not grown up on a farm, Casey brought an outside perspective
and eagerness to learn to the table when he married into his in-laws’ operation. Now farming his own operation, he’s put both of those qualities to use on his 1,300 acres of center-pivot irrigated ground near Holyoke, CO.
