I hope this edition of our Flyer finds you well into harvest and happy with your yields. This year has truly flown by... hard to believe it is Thanksgiving time with Christmas right around the corner. With 2018 coming into focus, I want to take a little different tack with this letter than I normally do. The year 2018 will mark the “100th� Anniversary of the John Deere Tractor. It was 1918 when John Deere decided to get into the tractor business... but more on that shortly. As I reflect on that momentous decision, can you think of any decision that has had a larger impact on agriculture than the invention and evolution of the tractor? So let me reflect on history a little further. The tractor discussion started as early as 1915, when all the then- implement manufacturers were asking themselves these vexing questions “Will this new tractor technology and the gasoline engine be a major innovation that will be widely adopted by farmers? If so, should implement makers buy them from specialized manufactures or build them themselves? Will the horse and mule ever be replaced? By 1916, competitors, such as Ford Motor Company’s Fordson, started entering the growing tractor market. Deere built several experimental and prototype models, but delayed decisive action on mass producing what will become one of the most important innovations of modern agriculture. The decision to expand from horse-drawn planters and plows into tractors was painful for the Board of Directors during this time. Then Deere and Company President, William Butterworth, was adamantly against the idea. “I do not want to use any of the money of the Deere estate or my own or that of the stockholders in an awfully expensive enterprise which will get us nowhere�, he wrote the Board. He was countered by a fellow Board Member, C.C. Weber, who said “I can’t see how we can stay out of the business any longer. It is impairing our business�. Throughout 1917, debate on this subject raged in the Deere Board Room. Finally, in 1918, the Board voted to buy the Waterloo Gasoline Engine and Tractor Company and on March 14, 1918, the company was purchased for $2.1 million. The Waterloo Boy Model “N� became the first 2-cylinder tractor made and sold by John Deere. Though 5,634 Waterloo Boys were sold that year by John Deere, Fordson sold 34,167 tractors during that same period, a testament to the growing popularity of tractors over horses and mules! As I reflect on this incredible innovation in moving from horses to tractors, I ask myself, “Will precision agriculture innovations, such as GPS-based guidance and field mapping, and tools like wireless data transfer and imagery, be recorded by history as another major step in innovation for agriculture?� I guess time will tell. In the meantime, we will be planning to celebrate the “Year of the Tractor� with several events at our dealerships during 2018. Stay tuned! Plan For Next Year
Harvest may have finished recently, but it’s never too early to start planning for next year’s success. There are many ways to use highquality data collected from this year to help plan for next years’ crops. It may be something as simple as recalculating a field’s total acres for next season’s resource planning, or creating a variable rate prescription application for fertilizer, seed, or irrigation. The first step in this process is removing harvest documentation data from your display and cleaning it up in Apex or the John Deere Operations Center. These data management systems enable you to postcalibrate each field or machine to get a geospatially accurate yield map as a “report card” for the field. A clean yield map really shows how the field actually performed and what varieties may have excelled or failed to meet your expectations agronomically and/or financially. Another advantage of a clean yield map is that it makes creating a variable rate prescription much easier if there are no other data layers with which to compare it. Starting out with accurate yield data will translate into a more accurate prescription when combining it with other data layers like: EC, elevation, and slope, - which all use GPS location to ensure precise accuracy. Tracking the yield performance can help determine what zones might need more or less fertilizer in next year’s crop as well. Zone soil sampling can be done with confidence after the field zones are defined; ensuring proper nutrient placement. Creating a variable rate prescription application from high-accuracy data layers can ultimately allow each area of the field to maximize financial return by potentially reducing inputs or reallocating those resources to a more productive agronomic area. Accurately recording documentation data during harvest activities enables easier tracking of varieties and their true performance characteristics like where to place them to perform best and generate the highest ROI in subsequent years. An easy way to start and keep display information uniform across your farm and equipment is to build a common setup file to load on each display that has all your machines, implements, fields, guidance lines, boundaries, products, and much more to maintain accurate and consistent records. It will also save you a lot of time in the long-run. Consider our team as a helping hand in keeping your operation running smoothly. It is very hard to believe that we are wrapping up 2017. Many would agree that this is a year to put behind us. As we work to further develop our businesses during what could be another challenging year for production agriculture, we have to wrap up 2017 and enter 2018 with the best possible start. What that means for each of our businesses and operations differs, but one thing is the same, the fact that we have to begin to close up the books, recognize our profits and/or losses and get prepared to go to the bank. Annual reviews are a fundamental part of our relationship with our financial institutions, and it is an area that we all could be more prepared for. The better we understand our own situation; what our strengths and weaknesses are, our fixed versus variable costs, and what our equity is, the easier and more productive our conversations with our bankers will be. 21st Century Equipment partnered with 21st Century Leasing is here to help! Activations which are associated to those receivers (like SF2 or RTK) will no longer be transferrable to a StarFire 3000 or StarFire 6000 receiver after that date. We don’t want you to risk losing the monetary value of your activation(s), or the receiver(s) you own in the event of a hardware failure or catastrophe. His wife MaKayla is originally from Scottsbluff and they are excited to be moving closer to her family. They have two young children.
