By now, I hope you have your fall crops in the bin and that harvest yields were good to you. As the holidays approach, I want to wish you and your families all the best as we move into the new year. As the new year approaches, and another business cycle begins, we have selected a theme around “Planning” for this edition of the Flyer. Whether you are a sports fan or not, I think we can learn a lot about the role of “Planning” in business from the sports world. In leading our Owen Palm mutual businesses to success in the coming year, we could use the recipe of many successful sports general managers, which is: Good Players + Good Tools + Good Coaching + Good Attitudes = Winning Results. GOOD PLAYERS Successful sports teams and successful businesses both start with the essential element of recruiting and retaining good people. Because “attitude” is so essential for our employees to be successful, combined with the difficulty we all have in hiring skilled people these days, the best approach may be to “hire for attitude and train for skill”. GOOD TOOLS The best sports teams have a detailed game plan that can be adjusted depending on the challenges they encounter in each game. A good game plan in our business also helps new employees learn new skills faster because their job requirements are outlined in the plan. Good tools also include utilizing all the data from previous crop cycles to adjust this year’s plan for optimum production performance. GOOD COACHING Good coaches on sports teams develop the players and stick to the game plan. The most important trait of a good coach is communication. It is said we learn 10% from what we read; 20% from what we hear; and 30% with what we do or practice. But we combine ways of learning, we learn 50% from what we see AND hear; 80% from what we practice; and 90% from what we hear, see and practice….so communication with our employees, in all these different ways, is vitally important! GOOD ATTITUDE With challenges that face production agriculture today, maintaining a “good attitude” can be difficult, but remember, attitudes on a sports team or in our mutual businesses, start at the top. Are problems viewed as “disasters” or “opportunities”? Do we “fix the problem” or “fix the blame”? Good attitudes start individually and then spread contagiously throughout the organization. WINNING RESULTS In sports and in business our goal is to end up in the best position possible. The real challenge in our agricultural businesses is simply to learn how to keep getting better and better each year. Understanding the Impact of the New Tax Law on Equipment Trade-In Transactions By Owen Palm

(Adapted from an article by Lance Formwalt, Far West Equipment Dealer Association)

In this article, I will try to explain how the tax law changes last December affect your tax treatment relating RtoEDUequipment CED OV ER $1of 0,you trade-in transactions. Many 00are 0 familiar with a “1031 transaction”, which is also commonly referred to as a “tax free exchange”. “1031” refers to the federal tax code section that allows you to sell property for a profit, without paying taxes, so long as you re-invest those proceeds into similar replacement property. The impact of “1031” is that it lets you continually defer taxes until you eventually cash out of the investment... or piece of equipment in this case.

Unfortunately, the new tax law upends the long-term status quo for equipment tradeins because it eliminated 1031 transactions for all property except real estate. As a result, starting in 2018, when you trade-in a piece of equipment, the IRS will view this transaction as a sale of the trade-in by you for a sale price that is equal to the trade-in credit. The hypothetical example below illustrates that prior to the tax law change, you could use your equipment trade-in as partial payment for a new piece of equipment, then use 1031 to avoid paying tax on any profit in

the difference between the trade-in credit you received and your tax basis in the trade-in. We then assume you can write-off the entire price of the combine in the first year using a combination of bonus depreciation and Section 179 expensing.

Fortunately, the new tax law contains some good news that can help alleviate the tax liability on the profit created by the trade-in in most circumstances. Under the new tax law, you will be able to expense the full value of any equipment purchased in the year of the purchase. Using the same hypothetical example below, see the tax consequences of the new tax law on the same transaction.

In conclusion, the new tax law that eliminates the 1031 transaction treatment on trade-in transactions has also added full expensing rules that will generally offset this change. These examples are intended to provide a general overview and is not intended to be legal advice. John Deere ActiveYield ensures the combine’s yield accuracy without time spent manually calibrating by the operator. ActiveYield eliminates time-consuming manual calibrations and replaces them with automated sensors that calibrate the machine by measuring the grain as the tank fills. This enables decisions to be made in real time without leaving the cab, providing more accurate yield mapping data. When the ActiveYield option is enabled and the Terrain Compensation Module (TCM) in the StarFireTM 3000 or StarFireTM 6000 Receiver has been calibrated, ActiveYield is ready to go to work. As grain is harvested and enters the tank, the three sensors within the grain tank collectively measure the grain as it piles over the cross auger covers. If all conditions are acceptable (header and separator on, grain is flowing, machine level within 4 degrees) load collection occurs from 2000 through 6600 lb. Stored calibration loads are replaced by new ones

as the system continues to collect data. The system may be disabled at any time by accessing the moisture setup page and unchecking the ActiveYield box if manual yield calibration is desired. ActiveYield is available for model year 2016 through model year 2019 S760, S770, S780, and S790 Combines and requires the 4600 CommandCenterTM Display, GreenStarTM 3 (GS3) 2630 Display, or GS3 Featured benefits: CommandCenter.
