A Note From Owen
To Our Valued Friends & Customers...
I don’t know about you, but I’ve read and heard enough about the COVID-19 pandemic in the last few weeks to last a lifetime. Therefore, I promise I will not make this letter another message about the challenges of the pandemic we have all faced! That being said, we have a lot of good things to talk about. In early January, we moved into our 12,000 square foot shop expansion at our Flagler, Colorado location. It’s a great Owen Palm addition to that facility with an overhead crane, spacious work bays and modern LED lighting. Our Flagler employees have been really excited about the upgrade and the commitment we have made to continue to serve our customers in western Kit Carson, Lincoln, Kiowa and Elbert Counties. As I write this letter, we are in the process of moving our employees into an entirely new 33,000 square foot facility that has been recently completed in Burlington, Colorado, that has been under construction since last August. This facility was constructed on our existing property in Burlington. Once the move into the new building is complete, we will have the existing structures torn down. In addition to including all the tools and accessories necessary to make the Parts and Service Departments as efficient and safe as possible, we have included a large classroom for meetings and training, ample customer parking and a huge inside display area. A big shout-out to our local Burlington Contractor, SKARCO Construction, who did a great job on both the Burlington and Flagler projects. Despite the ban on travel for much of this spring, we have not let up on our internal training. We have all gotten very good at conducting virtual meetings and video conferences! Up-skilling our precision ag knowledge across our entire organization has been a top priority this year. We are also excited about becoming an authorized John Deere Forage ProTM dealer which allows us to sell and service Self-Propelled Forage Harvesters. Our first demo unit has arrived and training for sales, parts and service is ongoing. We are anxiously awaiting the delivery of our first 8RX demo 4-track machines. Visit with your sales professional to get your name on a demo list and give these new tractors a try. As we begin to travel again, I am anxious for you to meet or new Chief Operating Officer (COO), Keith Krepps. Keith and his wife, Erin, joined us in March after a 22year career with RDO Equipment, headquartered in Fargo, North Dakota. For the last 16 years, Keith has successfully led RDO’s ag division, which included 35 locations across the western U.S. Keith has lots of experience across a variety of crops and geographies and we are glad to have his expertise on our leadership team and I know he is anxious to get out and start meeting you. Planting progress across the region has been going well. I understand we are dry in the Burlington-Cheyenne Wells area and timely rains to the north have got our row crops off to a strong start. Let’s hope the weather straightens out from here and that life in general returns to “normal” — whatever that is! It is hard to believe that wheat harvest is right around the corner too. I wish you the best as the growing season progresses. As always, we can’t thank you enough for your business and understanding during this challenging spring. Like you, we are ready to get back to “normal”. I’ve kept my promise not to mention COVID-19 in this letter, but I’ll conclude with this. Please stay mentally positive and medically negative! Sincerely,
President/CEO

The New John Deere 8RX!
The all-new 8RX. These new tractors come standard equipped with the latest precision ag technology and allow customers to choose the machine configuration, options and horsepower to best fit their operation. “New 8RX Tractors offer all the benefits of tracks and provide a driving experience more like a wheel tractor,”said Tammy Lee, marketing manager, production agriculture for John Deere. “They represent the next leap forward in tractor innovation and have everything customers like about 8R wheel tractors with the addition of four independent tracks and a new fully suspended cab that makes them more comfortable to operate. This new machine form delivers unmatched flotation, traction and ride quality.” With the turning characteristics of wheel tractors, 8RX Tractors deliver the pulling performance of tracks by providing more surface area of contact, less ground pressure and less slip than wheel tractors. “We didn’t just add tracks to an 8R Tractor. This is a fully engineered John Deere four-track solution, not a bolt-on aftermarket product,” Lee said. “A key component is the John Deere 1700 pivoting beam axle, specifically designed for a four-track tractor to provide the necessary strength and enable adjustability of tread spacings to fit grower needs.” Several track and axle setups are available for the new 8RX. Rear belts are available in widths of 18, 24, or 30 inches. Front axles can be set up to be 76, 80, 88, or 120 inches wide. Front belts are available in 18- and 24-inch widths.

What Our Customers Say... Despite it being the middle of planting season, Nicholas Lapaseotes of Lapaseotes Ltd in Bridgeport took time to speak with us about his business, his family and his John Deere planters. The farming operation focuses primarily on corn, sugar beets, alfalfa and wheat and is managed by Nicholas and his father, Nick. The company also has two feedlots and a cow-calf operation managed by his uncle Pete, and Pete’s daughter, Cassie. Nicholas a 4th generation farmer and, along with his wife Manda, would be thrilled if either or both of their sons, Rhett and Breck, became the 5th generation. His oldest, Rhett, almost 3 years old is already riding in the tractor with his dad flipping the switch to turn on the motor. Nicholas is quick to point out that it ultimately will be up to each son to decide if farming is what they want to do. Nicholas confirms the difficulty in recruiting employees to work on the farm. However, Nicholas says, “it is challenging but we’ve really been lucky to have some long-time employees.” One employee, Dick Alber started working for the Lapaseotes’ farm after high school and has been with them his entire career. The Lapaseotes farm includes multiple employees with many years of service, which speaks to the business culture. Facing retirements of some of these longtime employees, Nicholas is optimistic. “A cousin came to me and said he wanted to work, and he is starting part-time this summer,” says Nicholas. Nicholas runs two planters on the farm. The first is a John Deere ExactEmergeTM Planter with a Custom Row Unit Package. The other is a John Deere DR24 MaxEmergeTM 5e Row Unit mounted with an Orthman toolbar. Both planters were purchased using the Planter Early Order Program. This program offers a descending discount percentage with the highest discount given the earlier the order is placed. Nicolas says, “for us we have a general idea based on the acres and hours we put on the planters that we’re going to trade for new on the Early Order Program. Getting the first discount or the second is good. The thing is that, in today’s agriculture economy, any time you can save it’s huge!” The other factor for the Lapaseotes farm is that they plant sugar beets which require planting in mid-April. The Early Order Program ensures the planter comes in early and the proper adjustments can be made to be ready for that early planting
job. Speaking of the planter performance, Nicholas says that the planter purchased last year started out with some “growing pains.” Specifically, Nicholas says, “honestly, it didn’t start out well but once we got everything situated and got everything to work the way we wanted , it ran very well for us and it is running very well for us this year.” The other planter, the DR24 MaxEmergeTM 5e, Nicholas says, “this one took a few adjustments at the start but has been very, very good.” Previously, the operator ran a MaxEmergeTM 5 not a 5e but says, “this 5e runs really good and I like it.” Running both planters during the sugar beet planting and getting the kinks out really gets them ready for planting corn. As the Lapaseotes farm starts corn planting, Nicholas says, “between the two planters we have been getting 500 – 600 acres a day done fairly easily.” He adds, “that’s a lot of work and we’re going to cut our overall planting time quite a bit this year.” When asked to provide the benefits of a John Deere planter, Nicholas said, “efficiency is number one. Using the ExactMerge technology, [John Deere] claims you should be in the high 90 percentile on seed singulation and right now I’m running at 99.9%! With my population right at my target population.” In addition, the amount of work they can get done in a day, week or month is outstanding with a 24-row planter. Bottom line, Nicholas says, “I’m biased because I’ve grown up with John Deere equipment, but I recommend John Deere equipment to people.” Jason Ogden is the salesperson at 21st Century Equipment who Nicholas deals with most but overall, he has had positive experiences with sales, service, parts, and ISG. “I have nothing but great things to say about the dealership,” says Nicholas. In the wintertime, he’s a regular at 21st Century Equipment and “everyone is very friendly, helpful, and if they don’t have the answer, they are proactive to get it.” He also points out that “21st Century Equipment is on top of precision agriculture and other technologies and ahead of the competitors.” Today, Nicholas adds, “I feel some companies resist change because of the work and investment of learning new things and 21st Century Equipment is not like that. Take Aaron Ogden [ISG], for example, he has gained a lot of knowledge in a short time and he can handle any [precision agriculture] problem you throw at him.” Let’s face it, the planting season has been different this year. The coronavirus pandemic popped up just before the planters got rolling. Farmers like Nicholas are to be commended. Thank you, Nicholas, for your contribution to the Panhandle and the country.

All-new Facility Opens at Burlington, CO Dealership 21st Century Equipment is proud to announce an all-new facility in Burlington, Colorado. Located at 17777 US-385, the new facility is 33,000 square feet, employs a staff of 19 and is run by Location Manager, Cody Powell. The plans were developed with the help of Dustin Skarko of Skarko Designs and Jim Gales of Gales Design and Consulting assisted with the interior. Cody Powell says, “I could not have achieved this final build without Dustin. He maintained the budget and kept all the contractors on task during the build. The one thing I didn’t have to worry about was the facility going up.” The reason for the new 21st Century Equipment facility is about delivering service to the customers. “The entire reason behind this was to service customers better,” says Cody, “we started focusing on a new shop and, ultimately, we needed to put something in the front for a showroom, thus, an entirely new facility evolved.” Cody goes on, “the entire dealership was dark and hard to see. The shop was too small and too short to bring in large equipment.” Today, the shop is large enough that the technicians don’t have to pull a combine outside to work on the top side. In addition, says Cody, “the new shop will help us retain and recruit more technicians.” Technicians are now very comfortable and proud of their work environment. In addition, the parts department is more organized and streamlined. Overall, says, Cody, “we think we can add more qualified technicians to service the customer. In the end, this was always about the customer.” Cody praises the guys in the shop who kept things going during the transition. The department stepped up and worked hard. Henry Rohn was always thinking ahead, and all of the Burlington employees pitched in to stay open through the entire process. In addition, says Cody, “I want to thank our customers for sticking with us during the construction and I know that we will be able to serve them better with this new facility moving forward.” Russ Ball, South District Manager at 21st Century Equipment, is responsible for the Burlington facility as well as Flagler and Cheyenne Wells. The facility was acquired from McArthur Valley Implement Company in 2013 and was originally built by Harold McArthur in the early 1980s. The original metal building will be taken down, but will live on when reassembled on a farm near town. Russ says, “we actually used the plans from our Sidney location, just flipped them around to fit the needs in Burlington.” Russ added, “the employees have been wonderful during a stressful time. Not only building a new facility but keeping the old one open at the same time. And, by the way, during a very difficult time for agriculture amid a global pandemic. It is unprecedented and our employees are simply second to none!” Furthermore, the 21st Century Equipment board positions the company for the future. “Don’t just survive but thrive,” says Russ. A grand opening is being planned for later in the year.
Flager, CO Location Opens New Shop 21st Century Equipment is proud to announce the opening of a new 12,000 square-foot shop at the Flagler, Colorado location. The new shop, located at 4707 County Road V, is almost three times bigger than the previous one. This expansion allows for almost three times more capacity for service or storage of machines. One big addition is a crane. The Location & Service Manager, Scott Larson, says there are a lot of improvements. “We don’t have to remove tires to work on equipment and we have more room inside to store our customers’ equipment during service. The crane will really add to the efficiency of our techs when working on projects such as engines.” The Flagler location, formerly known as Kay Jan, Inc., merged with 21st Century Equipment in 2011. Nine employees work at the Flagler location and Scott says he is searching for more technicians. Today, Flagler has a state-of-the art service department that will be much more efficient, the flow is significantly better and the turnaround time for equipment service will be faster. “Now we can drive the equipment right into the shop and we don’t have to take the tires off to get it in,” said one of the Techs. The new shop provides an improved work environment that will increase employee retention and help to recruit new technicians. The 21st Century Equipment Flagler location is very active with local Agriculture teacher, Brittney Cockerham and the FFA, the AfterProm Parties, Lions Club and the local police and fire departments. Scott says, “we are proud to be here to help the customer and the community. And many folks in the community have commented on how happy they are that 21st Century Equipment invested in our community. It’s clear they are here for the long run.” District Manager, Russ Ball is responsible for the Flagler location, as well as Burlington and Cheyenne Wells. Russ says with this new shop in Flagler, the new facility in Burlington and the Cheyenne Wells store, 21st Century Equipment has great facilities to serve this area of Colorado. “We had simply outgrown the facility in Flagler and we needed to build this new shop to drive more business and grow.” Bottom line, added Russ, “the Flagler area is a great place to do business and we knew we had to improve our level of service for our customers.” Russ also wanted to say, “thank you to all of the employees for working hard during a challenging agriculture economy and during a global pandemic.”
