Five reasons why your child needs camp

There’s no doubt that summer camp is fun. Kids get to sing silly songs, play fun games, swim in lakes, and tell spooky stories around a campfire. This is the image of camp that has been captured and memorialized in films, books, and television programs for the past 50 years. But there’s much more to camp than just a good time. In addition to fun, parents should be aware of these five reasons their child needs camp. Camp forever changes your child…for the better. American Camp Association® (ACA) research has confirmed that camps build skills necessary to prepare campers to assume roles as successful adults. Campers said that camp helped them make new friends (96%), get to know kids who are different from them (93%), feel good about themselves (92%), and try things they were afraid to do at first (74%). Camp teaches your child to “move it, move it.” Camp provides children the opportunity to try new things and participate in human powered activities. According to surveys by both the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an American child is six times more likely to play a videogame on any given day than to ride a bike. An estimated 22 million of the world’s children under the age of five are already considered obese.

According to research conducted by ACA, 63 percent of children who learn new activities at camp tend to continue engaging in these activities after they return home. This leads to continued physical exercise that lasts a lifetime. Camp keeps all that hard work from going to waste. Camps understand the critical role they play in helping young people learn and grow. Many offer programs that help reduce summer learning loss, bolster academic enrichment and

socialization, provide opportunities for leadership development, and ensure that campers achieve their full potential. Camp allows kids to take a deep breath and feel the nature. Camp is a great way for your child to unplug from the iPod® and plug into the world around them. According to a study by two Cornell University environmental psy-

chologists, being close to nature can help boost a child’s attention span. Additionally, a study conducted by the University of Essex in England concluded that nature can help people recover from pre-existing stresses or problems, has an immunizing effect that can protect from future stresses, and helps people to concentrate and think more clearly. In some instances, camp may be the only time a child is in contact with the natural world. Camp is fun. It’s true; kids do sing silly songs and play fun games at camp. Children are allowed to play in a safe and nurturing environment, and are allowed to just be kids. Play is a powerful form of learning that contributes mightily to the child’s healthy physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development. According to an American Academy of Pediatrics report, creative free play protects a child’s emotional development and reduces a child’s risk of stress, anxiety, and depression. Top ten questions to ask when visiting a summer camp Tips from www.summercamps.com

2014

Picking a summer camp or program, every family needs to consider its own personal needs and requirements. Just like every child, every camp has its own personality. The directors and the staff determine that personality. The child’s interest, medical needs, allergies, dietary restrictions, family monetary concerns, co-ed or single sex, length of stay and distance from home are all some of the factors to be considered in determining the proper placement. In addition to traditional camps, there are camps that specialize in individual sports, theater/art/music, education, science, computers, weight loss, outdoor adventure, language, community service and many more. In order to help you make the right choice, here are some key questions you should ask when speaking to a camp director or visiting a camp in session:

How long have you owned the camp? If it is a short period of time, ask about prior experience in owning a camp or experience with children.

er’s schedule? My child loves a particular sport or activity, how often can he play it? What is the level of competition? Can every child play on a team?

How do you handle homesickness? What is your phone call policy?

Are showers and bathrooms available in the bunks?

Is there a doctor and/or nurse on site at all times? how close is the nearest hospital?

Are there religious services and, if yes, are they mandatory?

Where do most of the campers come from?

What additional charges are there? There are many other questions that you may have. Don’t be afraid to ask them. Camp directors understand your concerns and will do their best to answer every question.

What are the age and experience requirements for the counselors? How much selection is there in each camp-

Main Line Art Center Unearth your inner artist at Main Line Art Center Calling all Art archeologists and anthropologists! This summer, unearth your inner artist and explore ARTifacts of the past and present while creating masterpieces you’ll treasure forever! Summer Art Camp returns to the newly renovated and expanded Main Line Art Center in Haverford, Pa. from June 16 to Aug. 29 in 11 weeklong sessions. Art Camp is open to ages 4 to 5 for half day mornings and ages 6 to 13 for half and full days. This summer, young artists will learn the fundamentals of painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, fiber arts, jewelry and metals through imaginative projects inspired by civilizations from around the world. From the games they played, to the art they made, to the homes they lived in, we’ll examine what it was like to live in their world and interpret it using a variety of art mediums and techniques. Along the way, we’ll forge new friendships, and develop skills in collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-expression.

Each session, campers work with professional Teaching Artists in real art studios to explore a new theme and create unique masterpieces that incorporate fine arts and craft techniques and encourage personal expression. Camp is broken down into age groups with low student-to-teacher ratios so each child is challenged with age-appropriate techniques and materials. Back by popular demand, Pre-Teen Studio intensives will be offered every session this summer. Artists ages 11 to 13 select a morning and afternoon intensive to make up a full day (or one for a half day) to focus on a single medium and hone their skills while working closely with a professional artist. Each session features new projects so young artists can continue their artistic studies. Teen Studios are also available for ages 13 and older. Every Friday is a cause for celebration at Art Camp! At the end of each session we welcome a Visiting Artist and conclude the day with a gallery exhibition of masterpieces for family

and friends. Young artists leave with their arms full of awesome art projects, new friends, and skills in collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving and self-expression. Children develop a foundation for learning and a passion for the arts that they can build on for the rest of their lives. Main Line Art Center offers before care, after care and lunch care (for half-day campers). Membership is not required to participate in our programs, although it does offer many great year-round benefits including discounted tuition for camp, classes and family workshops, birthday parties, discounts at art supply stores, and more. Scholarships are available

for families with financial hardships; please call for an application. Discounts are available for multiple sessions and siblings, and tuition can be paid in 2 installments. For more information about camp, or to register, visit www.mainlineart. org or call 610-525-0272. Act now… many sessions fill up quickly!

girl scouts Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania offers summer camps for girls ages 5-17 Many of our favorite childhood memories involve time spent at summer camp. It’s a place where we develop character, discover hidden passions, forge new friendships and grow our independence. Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP) wants every girl in our region to have the best camp experience possible this summer. GSEP summer camp is open to all girls – you don’t need to be a Girl Scouts member to sign up for an incredible camping experience with the premier leadership organization for girls in eastern Pennsylvania! Offering 3 resident camps and 3 day camps spread throughout its nine-county footprint, all girls between the ages of 5 and 17 are invited to take part in GSEP outdoor programming. Girls choose between dozens of themed day, overnight and specialty camping

opportunities to fit their unique interests. This summer, new programs and amenities are available at all of GSEP’s campsites. In addition to “traditional” camp activities, GSEP offers themed weeks that appeal to young artists, adventurers, animal lovers, and performers. Both day and overnight campers will be engaged in activities ranging from campfires, hiking, cookouts and swimming to horseback riding, stand up paddleboards, archery, pottery, music, theatre, leadership training and outdoor education. What’s more, GSEP provides an affordable camping experience for all families so that no girl is denied access to the benefits of camp. Financial assistance, camp scholarships, and early bird registration discounts are all made available to parents looking to sign their daughter up for camp

this summer. For parents facing the challenge of day camp schedules during the summer months, bus transportation and extended days are also offered at some of GSEP’s campsites. Most importantly, Girl Scout camp offers unique leadershipbuilding experiences for girls of all ages. While your daughter spends time at camp, you can feel good knowing that she’s not only having fun and making new friends, but is also developing real-world skills that will encourage her to pursue her dreams and challenge herself in the future. GSEP’s mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character is embodied by its summer camps, which are designed to empower our young girls into becoming the leaders of tomorrow. A local mom shares her daughter’s experience at GSEP camp: “Thank you for an amaz-

ing week for my daughter. She LOVED camp! I personally believe that camp is building her into an amazing young woman. She is more confident, more independent, more helpful, more knowledgeable and more adventuresome with each week of camp she completes.” Early bird registration for 2014 summer camp is now open! Register online at www.gsep. org by March 15th to receive $50 off each resident camp and $25 off each day camp session. To register for your perfect camping experience or for more information, email camps@gsep.org, or visit www.gsep.org and select “Camps” to view our Summer 2014 Camp Guide. Benchmark Summer Camp Campers learn to soar at Benchmark Harnessed and wearing helmets, Benchmark campers climb high into the trees with a team of experienced counselors offering guidance and words of support. They navigate their way through one of five challenging routes to reach the 45-foot high Zip Wire. It’s only a moment on the platform before each camper is sent soaring down the line. “Our kids are just so happy and proud of what they have accomplished,” says Wayne Reichart, Benchmark’s Summer Camp recreation director. “It makes for a great summer.”

Benchmark’s Zip Wire experience is just one component of the camp that builds children’s confidence and competence. In its 44th year, Benchmark Summer Camp welcomes children ages 6 to 12 from all over

recreational day-camp experience. “During the five-week session we help children develop a love of reading in a highly supportive environment,” states Sally Laird, director of Benchmark’s Camp. “Instruction is individualized. Children meet in small reading groups of two to four students with a knowledgeable, experienced teacher. They are taught decoding and comprehension strategies, learn how to figure out words they don’t know, and how to make sense out of what they are reading.” “Our campers also begin to see themselves as confident writers,” Laird adds. “They write every day. They get to select their own topics and write about things they know.

We teach them to plan before they write and to use that plan as they develop the piece.” One parent commented, “Our son has had a complete transformation of academic confidence. He is reading, but more importantly, he believes in his abilities.” The recreation program is as carefully designed as the language arts part of the day and revolves around the half-day and full-day sessions. Using the school’s sprawling, wooded 23 acres, campers enjoy art activities and play games in the gym, on the playing field, and on the “green top” beside the gym. The full-day camp adds a hands-on science experience called “Discovery,” an additional art program, and swimming which includes both recreation and instruc-

tion. In addition, Benchmark has long been known for its 35-event ropes Confidence Course, along with the Zip Wire complex. “It’s a great combination,” Reichart says. “The parent responses we get at the end of the summer have proven that. I especially like this note I received from a parent, ‘My child thoroughly enjoyed every single day. We can’t wait for next summer!’ That is what summer camp should be.” Learn more about Benchmark Summer Camp by attending an Open House: Feb. 6, March 6, April 3, May 8, and June 5 (9 to 11 a.m.). across North America listed by the Foundation for Jewish Camp on the One Happy Camper website, www.onehappycamper.org, for 19 consecutive days. In addition to Camp Ramah participating camps include B’nai B’rith Perlman Camp, Habonim Dror Camp Galil, Golden

Sports academy

Sports academy develops the ‘mind, body and soul’ CAL Sports Academy located in Harleysville, Pa. is a year-round youth sports development facility where we are committed to providing the highest level professional training for beginner to high school level players in a variety of sports including basketball, volleyball, speed and agility, strength and conditioning, and soccer. By discovering a player’s “Strength Through Sports,” CAL Sports Academy not only develops the athlete but develops the whole being… mind, body, and soul. We were founded to provide positive sports programs for the youth in the area. Our goals are to instill leadership qualities in each participant with a “can do” attitude by providing sports training development.

Our motto, “Strength through Sports,” applies to strength of mind, body and soul. Our academy focuses on integrity, credible sports education, and commitment to results that exceed expectations, and the belief that children need good role models both inside and outside of their homes. All of our work is youthcentered and strives for the highest possible quality. We bring a developmental approach and a community-wide perspective to everything we do. Many can play the game but we provide players with the skills in order to play in the game. Our coaches have a dedication to each player by influencing their mind to become better players on and

off the court. Our positive motivation and energy keeps bringing players back into the gym. Whether it is an intense skills workout or a Pre-School Sports Explorers class, our coaches bring it each and every time with a joy and passion for what they do every day. You can’t help but leave one of our programs a better player, a better individual, and with a smile on your face knowing you worked hard. We also have a strong belief in paying it forward to the community we serve. We celebrate individual success and encourage our players and teams to become stronger in all they do. Whether it is helping with a food drive, walking in a parade, writing a letter to a military person overseas, or working to raise awareness

to end bullying, we focus on family and being there for players and families alike. We bring awareness to building lasting relationships through a shared passion for sports and

well-being. Join us in one of our summer camps, in-house league teams, developmental program, or clinics. Our summer campers have said “CAL

SPORTS ROCKS.” Visit our website, www.calsportsacademy.com, for more information on our sports programs, camps, and clinics throughout the year

important role when it came time to choosing a camp for her two children. “I asked my friends who already had children in camps, what camps they looked at and what they liked about their camps and things they might change,” she said. Like Chauveau, Drossner also suggested touring camps. “There’s a feeling that you get by touring them that will most likely mimic how your child will experience it,” Drossner said. “Make sure your child tours it too. Let them see the swimming pool and the art projects. You’ll get to meet the director and you’ll get a certain feeling from the director. Make sure you ask questions.” Asking the retention rate

of campers and counselors is a good place to start the question-asking process. Drossner is no stranger to the camping world. Her children, Hailey, 9 and Ryan, 6, began day camp just before they turned 4 years old. The experiences they’ve had at camp are part of the reasons she sends them back year after year. “They swim all day, do arts and crafts and sports; it’s a well-rounded program,” she said of Sesame/ Rockwood Camps in Blue Bell. She also credits camp to teaching her children how to swim. “Both our kids were nonswimmers and now they’re phenomenal swimmers. It’s amazing to see your Please see Finding on A25

child who had a fear of the water now just jumping in,” Drossner said. The friendships her children formed is another reason Drossner continues to send her children to camp. “I just personally think it’s such a wonderful experience for them,” Drossner said. “They have friends that they only see during camp.” When Drossner first began looking at camps, in addition to talking to parents, she also consulted the American Camp Association. According to Chauveau, camps that are accredited by the American Camp Association voluntarily subject themselves to up to 300 standards of a best practices guide. The guidelines are

composed of input from members of the Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross and other youth servicing agencies. Some of the guidelines include the distance between bunks, temperature of the food, age breakdown and ratio of campers to staff and medical staff. “Accreditation is a serious process. We’re in the preventative business, not the repair business,” Chauveau said. “Just because a camp is not part of the ACA [American Camp Association] doesn’t mean it’s a bad camp. If it’s not accredited, ask why. If they say, ‘It’s none of your business,’ then it’s time to move onto the next camp.”

While different camps offer campers specific opportunities, Chauveau is quick to point out that costs shouldn’t deter someone from attending camp. He said that day camps can cost an average of $300 to $500 per week, and overnight camps can cost an average of $700 to $2,000 a week. “Camp is for everyone and there’s a camp for every budget,” he said. “If a family liked a particular camp, and they feel like it’s beyond their budget, they should ask. They have private scholarships that are available to help people find a way.” One of the big questions parents will ask when it Please see Finding on A26

comes to camps is if their child should attend day camp or overnight camp. Some parents (and their children) might be apprehensive about their first overnight camp experience. Because no child is the same, the age you send them to camp is dependent on the child. “Sometimes a child will say it’s been really great attending day camp but I’m ready for something more adventurous that detaches me and gives me some more independence,” Chauveau said. One of the biggest pieces of advice Chauveau offered when going to overnight camp, is committing 100 percent and sticking out the overnight camp for the entire session. “Don’t say ‘let’s see how you like it for a week,’”

So Much to Do - At Camp, the Opportunities are Unlimited As President and Mrs. Obama send their daughter to summer camp, they may be wondering what activities will fill her day. Depending on interests and camp offerings, a day at camp can vary greatly — including so many exciting experiences and opportunities to learn something new. Every summer, happy campers return home after their time at camp with new found skills, greater confidence, and a sense of community that can only be found at camp. Some camps offer a little bit of everything, and campers have the option to participate in a buffet of

activities, including swimming, horseback riding, archery, canoeing, ropes courses, art, drama, and many more. Other camps may specialize in one or two activities, such as academics, the arts, or soccer. There are other activities, such as campfires, familystyle meals, and quiet moments in nature that are as much a part of the camp experience as the zip line or high ropes course. Camp community is wide-ranging, and there truly is a camp suited for every child. Whether families are looking for an allaround experience, or one that focuses more on one or two activities, families

For some campers, camp is the ideal time to try something new; 63 percent of parents reported that their child continued to participate in new activities learned at camp after they returned home.
