ome wine aficionados in Pennsylvania still insist that their vino must come from California, Italy or almost any location not famous for cheesesteaks, shoofly pie and a certain weather-forecasting groundhog.

It’s a perplexing bit of snobbery to those who know that the range of Chardonnays, Pinot Grigios, Pinot Noirs, Cabernets and other specialty wines from the state’s more than 200 wineries sprawled across nearly 14,000 rolling acres have captured the palates of wine connoisseurs the world over. With the U.S. now standing as the world’s largest wine market, according to the International Vine and Wine Organization (OIV), based in France, it seems as if more Americans than ever can relate to the words of Benjamin Franklin (“The discovery of a wine is of greater moment than the discovery of a constellation”) and George Carlin (“What wine goes with Captain Crunch?”) “I think people are more cognizant about what they consume and that there is a greater interest in wine in general,” said Jennifer Eckinger, executive director of the Pennsylvania Winery Association (PWA), a trade organization that represents more than 100 member Pennsylvania vintners. “When people think about food, with the popularity of food shows and celebrity chefs and things of that nature, they consider wine the part of any celebration.” Pennsylvania wineries have certainly come a long way since Frenchman Peter Legaux launched the state’s first commercial, if ultimately unsuccessful, vineyard, Pennsylvania Vine Company, in Spring Mill, Montgomery County, in 1798 (“A History of Wine in America,” Thomas Pinney.) A varied climate and nearly perfect soil, flecked with fertility-enhancing gravel and limestone, now nurtures more than 70 native and hybrid varietals and artisan vinifera grapes on some of the most fertile terrain on the East Coast. Ehow.com notes that Pennsylvania has some of the best conditions for growing the popular and complex Cabernet Sauvignon grape varietal, a red grape variety used by itself to produce Cabernet Sauvignon wine, or blended with other grape varietals. According to the website, vineyards in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York make up the three states known as the “concord wine belt,” producing the hearty white Concord grape varietal that is known to have a lower sugar content than European grapes and is used in such wines as Manischewitz. He started his own firm 48 hours later and took on the cases that no one else wanted because in 1979 there was little money to be made on a workers’ compensation case. You can have a winery and a vineyard or a winery without a vineyard … or just a vineyard. To have a winery you have to be producing a number of gallons per year to be a limited winery as a commercial operation, not just a hobby.” The greatest concentration of wineries is in the Southeast region, formerly called the Philadelphia Countryside region, said Eckinger, who noted the high population could explain this. “That particular region is very fortunate to have four prominent wine trails that are in operation — Bucks, Brandywine, Berks and Lehigh Valley. All of them are incredibly active and have quite a bit to offer as far as activities and events, with wine tastings and festivals.” Pennsylvania’s 12 wine trails zigzagging through the state are designated as groups of wineries located within close

proximity to each other and are designed to give visitors a “richly textured wine experience,” according to PWA. “Because the growing conditions vary throughout the state, each wine trail offers a distinctive experience for the traveler and his or her palette.” The trails include Berks County Wine Trail; Brandywine Valley Wine Trail; Bucks County Wine Trail; Endless Mountains Wine Trail; Groundhog Wine Trail; HersheyHarrisburg Wine Country Trail; Lake Erie Wine Country Trail; Lehigh Valley Wine Trail; Mason-Dixon Wine Trail; Montgomery County Wine Trail; Southwest Passage Wine Trail and Susquehanna Heartland Wine Trail.
