VCKENWOOD INDIA announced two new models in its successful line of professional Blu-ray/ hard disc drive combo decks. Designed to provide easy duplication and disc authoring without a PC, the SR-HD1350US and SRHD1700US can create Blu-ray or DVDs directly from live video inputs or from video files stored on built-in hard drives With up to 6x dubbing speed with BD-R discs, the SR-HD1350US and SRHD1700US are the fastest JVC combo decks to date. New features include the ability to pause during direct-to-disc

recording, record directly to DVD in DVD-video format, and create BDMV and BDAV discs from live sources. Using a simple, menu-driven interface, videos are transferred to the internal hard drive, assembled into a completed project and output to disc. The units support BD-R or BD-RE (eras-

able) Blu-ray discs, as well as DVD-R (SL/ DL) or DVD-RW DVDs. Unprotected DVD and Blu-ray discs can be easily duplicated as well. Authored discs can be produced with auto-start or repeat playback for retail point-of-sale displays and other applications. Pune RTO Select Bioenable Fingerprint Scanner for Driving Licence Registration

egional Transport Office of Pune has recently selected Bioenable fingerprint scanner for the driving licence registration in the city. The fingerprint scanner contains biometric software that is used for verification, authentication and identification purposes. With the same, one person would not be able to get a second driving license from another RTO and the authority would be able to put a stop on fraudulent cases. The registration centres at RTO would now have a computer along with related devices from BioEnable Technol-

ogies Pvt. Ltd. including a USB fingerprint scanner, digital signature pad and web camera. The person applying for a driving license would need to be present physically at the registration office. The photograph of the applicant along with his signature and impressions of both thumbs would be stored in a microchip attached to the license. The USB finger print scanners are manufactured by a Korean Company, Nitgen. Experts of the field are of the view that this would eliminate the role of agents when it comes to getting a new June 2014

license. Pradeep Bhatia, the MD of the company said, “The product is a combination of superior quality and cost efficiency that helps to modernize the market of finger scanner. Under the National e-Governance Plan all state transport offices need to be computerised for managing vehicle registration and issuing driving licences more efficiently. Today’s surveillance video is routinely utilized to positively identify persons, objects, vehicles and actions/ events, and is legally admissible for prosecution. In addition to amazing high-definition image quality, cameras are capable of performing real-time video analytics, digital pan, tilt and zoom (p/t/z) and integrated access control applications (although they are often limited to performing one of these functions at a time). including increased processing power, on-camera storage and recording, analytics, embedded video management systems (VMS), integrated access control solutions, and more. Let’s take a closer look at these benefits. As discussed, increased processing power allows many functions traditionally handled by the server or NVR to take place on the camera before being pushed over the network. This can result in decreased bandwidth on the network and the server or NVR being able to support additional cameras. On-camera storage can be utilized for recording video in small server-less systems for redundant backup, or in remote locations. This allows cameras to be placed in areas too distant to make it practical to wire or those locations where setting up a network would be cost prohibitive. In more traditional video surveillance architectures, this also enables fault tolerance in the event

of network failures. Analytics can be managed and operated on the camera saving bandwidth and decreasing the amount of video pushed through the server. For example, motion-based recording would be triggered and processed on the camera rather than sending a 24/7 stream of video over the network. For more complex analytics that require more intensive computing, the camera can perform preprocessing on the video and then send the metadata to the server with or without the video. Many cameras are now capable of embedding a VMS on the camera. This eliminates the need for expensive recording servers making server-less, lowcamera-count systems very cost effective. The cost benefits of these types of systems are significant and provide a means of surveillance not previously available. Integrated access control applications are now also available. access control system or remote attendant/ notification system. Whenever IQaccess is triggered, a video alert window pops up in every IQaccess-enabled Windows PC. It allows the responder to have audio or visual verification of the trigger event and perform an action such as: open a door, activate an alarm, turn on lights or control any other device you have connected to your camera’s relay output. In the example above, if a visitor rings the doorbell on the intercom device, the user, say an office secretary, sitting at a workstation would get a video notification. After visual verification via the camera stream and a verbal conversation over the intercom, the secretary could remotely open the door and authorize the user to enter. All this functionality would be powered by the smart camera.

Top Five Myths About

ess than a decade ago, conducting a banking withdrawal or deposit meant walking into a retail branch, approaching the teller window and making a standard transaction. Today, most people bank from the comfort of their own home – or office, or train or passenger seat in a car. Mobile banking has evolved over time and, if you ask most consumers, it’s something they’ve come to trust and rely on as usage numbers continue to rise. If consumers have evolved and adopted the Internet as a standard medium for handling banking transactions, why has the banking industry been slow to adopt IP technology as a solution standard for physical security? One reason for the slow adoption is in part based on the proprietary design of existing systems combined with today’s IT departments being

challenged to support disparate systems. This means they have multiple systems with multiple functions to understand all while trying to maintain critical network security and integrity across the entire company. Frankly, to many IT departments in the banking world, IP video is considered yet another disparate system that they must ‘worry about.’ There are many advanced technologies that could improve bank security procedures and system cost – such as edge storage with integrated VMS running in-camera, hosted video solutions that utilize banks’ data centers, intelligent applications and advanced imaging technologies. But before these topics can be even remotely considered, there are five popular myths of IP video solutions in the banking world that must first be addressed.

Myth #1 – IP video isn’t secure

segment’s main concerns for not wanting cameras and recording devices connected to their enterprise network. This is primarily because most analog system DVRs with network capabilities that they are familiar with come with pre-installed proprietary software with no ability to install Anti-virus software. Without the required IT approval to attach the DVR to the enterprise network, remote functionality is severely impacted. Yet in an environment where the ability to conduct timely investigations is critical, remote connection could make the difference in improved operational efficiencies, retrieving critical video data for law enforcement and closing out investigations in a timely manner. Because of this, physical security managers in banking have started to realize that IP video solutions can not only help augment diminishing security staffs, but can also improve investigation processes in a secure manner. This has been a catalyst to not only educate themselves but also their IT

counterparts. IP video devices need to be attached to an enterprise network in order to take full advantage of its ability to integrate with other security solutions. Today’s best IP-based security devices should be considered another network appliance to an IT staff with confidence, as they will meet most of the same network security standards and employ multi-level passwords, SSL encryption, VPNs and firewalls. When combined with today’s open technology standards, these devices should be accepted by most IT departments to be easily and securely attached to a corporate enterprise network – without causing any compromises.

Myth #2 – IP video will take up too much bandwidth

B

andwidth consumption is the second major concern in the banking segment. The belief is that video – especially high-quality video – running across the network will severely impact the bottom line by slowing business-related traffic. This translates to dollars lost. Although this is a logical concern for someone new to the technology, proper network design and camera configuration by an experienced integrator will show the exact effect that the proposed system with have on bandwidth – which should quell many concerns. With that in mind, many physical security managers have started including their respective IT managers as part of their overall security strategy to better understand bandwidth needs and consumption. This allows them to educate their IT counterparts on video compression advancements, get initial buy-in for future solution strate-

gies and lend assistance with scaling network requirements (and potentially share budgets) to include physical security needs. Ultimately the benefit that has come out of this new collaborative approach is that IT managers are starting to realize that video will periodically need to be accessed over the network. However, with the rise of extremely efficient compression methods like H.264 and edge functionality controls inside network cameras, bandwidth requirements have decreased significantly. Remember, bandwidth consumption is contingent on how effectively the overall system is designed, which takes planning. With the use of eventbased and scheduled recording or local NAS drives, there’s no need to stream countless amounts of video over the network to a remote storage device.

Myth #3 – IP video isn’t cost effective

M

ost physical security managers in the banking segment are constantly faced with the challenge of doing more with less. They are very accustomed to sticking with what has been the best solution for their budget: currently analog CCTV. Since an analog camera is essentially a dumb device that can see in a lower resolution, it stands to reason that it would be cheaper than today’s advanced HDTVquality IP cameras. But if you are only comparing apples to apples, analog camera vs. IP camera, you’re neglecting the total cost of the analog system over time vs. what the IP system will cost during the same time period. Unlike an analog camera that is totally dependent on the head end for video processing and management, IP June 2014

cameras change the game by allowing a new way of designing and utilizing video solutions. An analog system may be the least expensive solution for the first year of deployment, but the bank is then boxed in by having to roll out DVRs that normally have 16 or 32 available ports. If a 16-channel DVR has reached capacity but another camera or two must be added to monitor the lobby, you either have to add an additional expansion module or DVR, which can be very costly. With tight physical security budgets, a more cost effective long-term solution would be to design an IP system with future scalability only limited by the VMS (video management system) selected. Additionally, today’s IP cameras are intelligent devices that allow for video processing within the device. If comparing to analog, it’s the difference between an old flip phone and a smartphone. Both will make a call but one is clearly a more advanced device that can process a plethora of downloadable apps that are constantly being developed and rolled out to take advantage of the smartphone’s capabilities. Value per cost is much in favor of an IP solution. One such value – easy remote control, management and investigations, especially for organizations that cover a wide geographical area – leads to less costly travel and faster incident resolution. This too should be factored into total cost considerations. Also, IP cameras can be leveraged individually, provide distributed video processing capabilities and offer redundant onboard storage in case of a network interruption, which eliminates the single point of failure of a traditional DVR. Routine maintenance and recording failures common with DVRs are eliminated because network

video updates can often be done remotely and before a failure – again saving time and money. Next consider that the number of remote or kiosk ATM locations is constantly growing. Deploying a DVR solely for one or two analog cameras drastically increases the overall cost for providing video coverage. In a total IP solution, a single camera can be installed with in-camera SD card or local NAS storage (i.e., edge storage) and remotely connected to provide the same intended coverage. Combine all these benefits and the total cost of ownership with benefits gained far out weight the initial investment for the future scalability ahead.

Myth #4 – Going to IP means I have to start from scratch

T

he goal for physical security managers is to improve the efficiency of their operation and stay within budget. In financial institutions, physical security departments are a critical expense to the very precious bottom line. It’s no wonder that when most security managers are weighing how to leverage new IP video solutions to improve their overall operations, they are somewhat concerned that it means they must make a huge initial investment to get started. However, with today’s hybrid technology, migrating to a totally IP-based solution is much easier and full of different options. The ability to utilize existing cameras, existing coax cable, video encoders and Ethernet to Coax converters makes it possible to leverage most of an existing system (and investment) while migrating to digital technology as budgets permit. In the banking segment, the physi-

cal security manager can get the best of both, allowing older devices to be replaced over time while providing improved future scalability, image quality and functionality. This ability to envision an acceptable scaled migration plan that can be budgeted for becomes a more realistic strategy, and enables much better use of live and captured video.

Myth #5 – There aren’t very recognizable differences between analog and IP

O

n the surface, both technologies perform a core task: record and replay video. Ninety-nine percent of all video surveillance today is deleted before it’s even seen by anyone. Some use this as a point to ask: Why should I switch? If you’re looking to do more with live or stored video, IP video is a marked improvement over analog. With the adoption of HDTV and megapixel cameras, greater levels of detail can be achieved in a captured image. In essence, what’s gained in the banking segment is the ability to have more pixels on target that can be analyzed for incident investigations where the smallest of details are used by law enforcement. The ability to digitally zoom in and maintain a greater level of clarity on a teller line for improved facial recognition is only one of the immediate advantages of IP video. Banks will also gain the ability to take full advantage of video analytics, which can provide better use of the video being captured. With the adoption of the ONVIF IP video standard, overall system integration capabilities are greatly improved allowing for multiple systems to seamlessly work June 2014

together to enhance the security of retail banking centers, mission critical data centers and card processing facilities. Another ‘difference’ isn’t one that you can see. One of the major challenges for banking security managers is the cost and demand of site visits to conduct system upgrades. This not only requires the cost of sending a technician out to visit each site, it takes tremendous coordination and can sometimes impact standard business operations since DVRs are normally located in secure locations that require someone to provide access. Open standards make it easier to keep end devices up-to-date with remote firmware upgrades pushed out to the edge device as well as the ability to integrate with a wider array of software solutions. Video solutions of the future will not only meet current physical security needs but provide opportunities for overall operational enhancements.

Security needs of tomorrow: It’s IP

ecura Key announces immediate availability of the NOVA.16 (Model SK-MRCP) multi-reader access control panel. This new platform provides a major technology upgrade to Secura Key’s legacy SK-NET™ system. The NOVA.16 connects to the local area network, and it also connects to a high speed, RS485 peripheral network consisting of up to 16 single-door smart readers, each containing all of the inputs and outputs to control and monitor a single door. This combination of a control panel and smart readers is far more cost-effective than the traditional 2-reader or 4-reader control panel, or even the newer edge devices. ail systems follow standard reliability engineering principles by using the RAMS metric: Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety. Of these four metrics, Availability, also known as the mission capable rate, can be considered a cornerstone. Trains achieve safety in part by ensuring the constant availability of their safety and control systems, and highly available systems make it possible for the trains to deliver more consistent service. Availability can be expressed with the following formula: Availability = Estimated Uptime/ (Estimated Uptime + Estimated Downtime) Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) are quantitative estimates of uptime and downtime, respectively, so another way to express the above equation is: Availability = MTBF/ (MTBF + MTTR) Looking at this formula, we can immediately see that availability can in some sense be described as a function of both reliability (MTBF) and main-

n an Ethernet network, every Ethernet device has an IP address that is used to identify it to the rest of the network. Every time a device is attached to the network, it needs to set an IP address. This is also true when an existing network device is swapped for a replacement device, as frequently occurs in train maintenance depots: the replacement device will need an IP address. Traditionally, Ethernet devices will be assigned an IP address either manually by an administrator, or automatically by a central server. Both of these approaches present maintenance issues in rail systems, and thus adversely affect availability. Let’s examine each in turn.

(DHCP) to automatically assign an IP address to network devices. The newly connected device is a DHCP client and will send a broadcast query on boot up. Upon receiving this query, the DHCP server will assign an available IP address to the device. This procedure eliminates any need for manual IP configuration. However, DHCP also has its limitations. The DHCP server is comparatively indiscriminate in assigning IP addresses, because DHCP only provides limited mechanisms for deciding which IP address to assign. Generally speaking, a DHCP server will simply give the newly connected device the next available IP address. This is acceptable in enterprise networks, as devices on such networks are generally capable of identifying themselves on higher layers of the network. For example, Bill’s laptop can always identify itself to the network as ‘BillsLaptop’ on the application layer regardless of what its current IP address on that network is. Applications running on this network will know to look for ‘BillsLaptop,’ and not a specific IP address, when they need to send a communication to that machine. However, this is not the case for rail applications and devices. In rail networks and applications, IP addresses are used as the unique identifier. This means that when devices are replaced, rebooted, or swapped, the IP address attached to the same location must remain the same, or else the application will have no idea how to communicate. DHCP is unable to achieve this consistency. If you boot up the same device on a DHCP network in different locations, you may receive different IP addresses.

In physical topology learning, the server is always aware of the topological location of the network devices on the network, and so network devices will always be assigned the same IP address as long as they are connected to the same location tainability (MTTR). Clearly, availability can be improved by increasing MTBF. This is something that is already well-understood by most rail operators, and immediately makes sense: by using more reliable products, the system will improve its availability. However the second value is sometimes overlooked: MTTR. It is worth pointing out that availability also improves when we decrease MTTR. In other words, for a system to be truly optimized for high availability, it must be very reliable (high MTBF) and also very easy to maintain (low MTTR). Ultimately, even if a system has an extraordinarily high MTBF value, it cannot be said to have truly optimized availability if it takes an unacceptably long time to recover when service interruptions do occur.

What the availability formula means for rail

I

n creating communications networks, rail integrators and operators already understand the important role of availability, and work to achieve high reliability/ MTBF in order to support that ultimate goal. However, the second half of that equation, maintainability/ MTTR, represents an untapped potential strategy to further optimize system availability. This is especially true in the rail market because rail operators and their front-line maintenance

staff are not yet very familiar with operating Ethernet networks. Network maintenance tasks that might only be mild inconveniences in a conventional enterprise setting can become major operational roadblocks in a rail setting. Thus, by making everyday maintenance procedures more streamlined, efficient, and error-free, rail system integrators can dramatically improve the overall availability of the rail operations.

networks that need to be more specific about which IP addresses are assigned to which devices. The alternative is to forgo the convenience of automatic IP assignment for more laborious, but more precise, manual IP assignment. Typically, administrators can manually assign an IP address to a network device by connecting to that device through a serial, Telnet, or web console. Such a procedure may be feasible when there is a limited number of devices, or when the devices only need to be configured once. Neither is the case in rail networks. In rail networks, there could be tens of network devices just in a single train car, multiplied by the number of cars in a consist, amounting to hundreds of network devices in one system. Each of these devices would need to be assigned a specific IP address every time the system reboots, and also every time a device is replaced. Maintenance time for such a process would be nearly unworkable, especially when one considers that in rail operations, maintenance engineers are rarely also IP networking experts. In addition to the sheer workload, the potential for manual error further erodes MTTR when using manual IP configuration. Manual IP assignment can be made somewhat easier through a configuration dongle that stores configuration information, typically on a USB device. When the device boots up, it will be assigned an IP address through the dongle. The administrator only needs to attach the right dongle to the device. This is an improvement on completely manual configuration, but has its own limitations. Each dongle can only store one configuration, so a unique dongle is needed for each network device. Again, the number of devices involved, and the frequency with which they need to be

assigned IP addresses, makes this approach one that adversely affects availability. This is just considering the case of replacement, not even swapping.

Automatic IP assignment that works for rail: Physical topology learning

FLI (Flexible, location-based, intelligent) is a convenient auto-configuration technology that automates common configuration tasks while remaining highly deterministic All the network devices will keep the same IP address because they will always be connected to the same topological location on the network. Similarly, any replacement devices will always be assigned the same IP address of the device they are replacing, because they too will be connected to the same location on the network. DHCP already possesses limited information about the physical attachment of DHCP clients, through a function known as DHCP option 82. However, option 82 is of limited utility for rail, because it is only able to identify the physical location of network devices, and is unable to physically locate switches. In car swapping, this is even worse. In this case, the option 82 ID attached to the switches could actually lead to massive mis-configuration. Again, in enterprise systems most end devices will be able to identify themselves on the application layer, such as “BillsLaptop.” By failing to physically locate these devices, option 82 is an incomplete solution for rail networks.

FLI technology gives rail operators the convenience of an automatic configuration system, without compromising on consistency or determinism. This reduces maintenance time substantially by reducing maintenance workload and minimizing maintenance errors. Furthermore, with FLI, the entire network configuration is centralized in a central location. This makes it much easier to reconfigure the entire network, as the entire network can be reconfigured from a single location instead of individually reconfiguring each individual device.

Year Ahead for Access Control

he electronic access control industry saw many changes in 2013 and the next 12 months should be no different. According to IHS Technology, the access control industry could begin to see rapid changes in the short to medium term. In a historically slow moving market (compared with video surveillance) the access control market has seen many new entrants such as Axis, as well as new end-user demand from the residential space and continued adoption of newer technologies such as wireless electronic locks. IHS expects that the market size for electronic access control will top $3.5 billion in 2014, driven by returning growth in the Americas market as well as emerging regions such as Middle East and Africa. For hardware, much of the growth will be driven by electronic locks which can either be offline-standalone, data on card or wireless-online. Wireless continues to see strong growth as end-users

begin to trust and understand the technology. Additionally, IT departments are more involved than in the past and will likely continue to be heavily involved and in some cases, may begin to manage and dictate access control installations. IHS also expects that open standards will begin to take shape for the access control industry in 2014 although wide-

spread adoption may take a few more years. Prior to investing in the R&D, many suppliers are waiting to see how the rest of the industry will adopt and implement standards. Other trends such as NFC continue to garner interest; however, adoption hasn’t been as extensive as originally expected. According to IHS, NFC has not yet been installed for access control purposes and some manufacturers are beginning to look toward other options such as Bluetooth low energy (BLE). Lastly, IP devices are seeing more uptake and are being pushed closer to the edge, allowing for more remote management and reducing installation costs. Overall, this is an exciting time for the access control industry. With continued interest in big data, many are wondering how access control can be leveraged to harness some of this information which is leading to more seamless integrations.

Cash-in-Transit Attacks Reach an all-time Low as the Threat of Violence Remains D

espite attack levels reaching an alltime low in 2013, falling victim to attack and robbery remains a very real threat for the security industry’s cash-intransit couriers, according to the latest statistics published by SaferCash, the

cash-in-transit intelligence service of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA). Transporting around £500 billion every year – the equivalent to £1.4 billion every day – the UK’s cash-in-transit June 2014

industry performs an essential public service, keeping cash moving around the country, supporting banks, retailers and businesses by facilitating millions of transactions every day. The number of attacks on cash-in-

transit couriers reached a record low last year, with just 270 attacks taking place. This represents a 30% decrease when compared to 2012, and an impressive 75% decrease on the all-time high figure of 1060 attacks in 2009. James Kelly, Chief Executive of the British Security Industry Association comments, “These consistent yearon-year successes are testament to the continued joint efforts of industry, government and Police in tackling this serious and violent crime. However, it is the violent nature of this crime – and its

significant impact on its victims – that is the driving force behind all stakeholders’ efforts to reduce both the number and impact of cash-in-transit attacks, and the statistics contained in this report highlight the vital importance of all stakeholders’ continued commitment to this cause.” Looking closer at the risk of violence faced by couriers, it is clear that – despite an overall reduction in the number of attacks – serious injury is still a very real threat to couriers. While overall injury rates decreased since 2012, almost a quarter of attacks in 2013 (24%) resulted in some kind of injury, and the proportion of attacks where firearms were used or intimated has risen from 10% in 2012 to 14% in 2013. Steve Hurst, Head of SaferCash says, “For couriers going about their daily duties, these figures can never be far from their minds, and it is for this reason that we as an industry, along with our colleagues in Government and Police

Establishing a partnership between Industry and Police has given SaferCash the ability to identify linked offences and spot where organised crime groups (OCGs) are active across Force boundaries. In the case of cash-in-transit, these groups are operating on an increasingly nationwide basis, impacting on local communities and often using the proceeds of their crime to fund other criminal enterprises such as drugs or human trafficking.

ontactless payment card shipments accelerated globally in 2013, according to figures released recently by the Smart Payment Association (SPA). at an opening-day session at the CARTES America conference and exhibition in Las Vegas. In its annual review of the smart payment card market, the SPA reports that contactless technologies were

present on over one-third (37 percent) of all smart payment cards shipped in 2013. By far the greatest increase was experienced in the Asia Pacific region, where contactless shipments grew by a staggering 193 percent compared to 2012. Other regions around the globe experienced strong growth rates, ranging from 45 percent in the Americas to June 2014

Whether in the form of a ‘tap-andgo’ credit or debit card or contactless payments via a smartphone, growing consumer and retailer hunger for the convenience and opportunities presented by contactless payment accounts for this rapid growth. Shipments of dual interface cards, incorporating both chip and PIN and contactless technologies, grew by an impressive 115 percent in 2013, largely driven by growth in Asia and Europe. As a result, dual interface cards now represent 94 percent of all contactless shipments. The data*, collated by the SPA – whose six members represent more than 85 percent of the total available market – reveals the migration to contactless payment is a reality in more than 30 countries worldwide. The deployment of contact payment infrastructures, which includes terminals and POS, is paving the way for mobile payments and accelerating the introduction of NFC to mass markets. More than 1.5 billion cards were shipped last year, with the highest increased once again recorded in the Asia Pacific region (up 75 percent) driven largely by China’s migration to chip based payments and the initiation of EMV in India. EMEA’s strong growth of 12 percent was in part driven by SEPA rules which enforce chip and PIN and the growth of EMV in Russia. A substantial 37 percent growth in North America reflects the completion to EMV by Canada and the escalating migration to EMV currently underway in the USA. The drive to increased card security

PSIM Software Continues to See Strong Growth Despite Increased Competition A

new report from IHS reveals that the world market for PSIM (Physical Security Information Management) software is estimated to have been worth $160.3 million in 2013. The PSIM market, while being a small segment of the larger security & fire market, continues to enjoy 20 percent and higher growth rates, and will do so until at least 2018. This growth is being driven in part by end-users utilising PSIM software platforms as a tool to enforce compliance of both internal policies and external legislative requirements. Despite these growth rates, confusion surrounding what constitutes PSIM software remains. Competing products such as command and control platforms, advanced video management software,

and security integration platforms have muddied the water as their capabilities and functionality have expanded into what was once considered PSIM’s territory of situational awareness and situation management. One of the key selling points in previous years for PSIM platforms was their ability to connect and integrate multiple disparate systems, both security and non-security. It is this connectivity and integration aspect to PSIM which has been eroded over the past two years, with many other products being able to offer various integrations to expand their software’s reach. PSIM software has thus had to shift its USP away from this integration aspect. Customers that are buying PSIM now are really coming with a

top-down view, with a need to improve their security operations in a cost effective, operationally efficient way, while improving the overall security of the environment they are working in. This is where the PSIM value proposition lies. That said however, the market has grown in line with expectations from the previous edition of the report, with the market being $7.5m larger in 2013 than previously expected. However, longer-term growth will be muted compared with previous expectations. The market’s long-term growth is limited by competing products successfully being deployed in the mid-tier, a market that has historically been out of reach for the high-end PSIM software platforms due to their high price tag.

The Global EWC Service and Maintenance Market to Increase by More than $437 Million by 2018

I

n its latest study of the $1.57 billion global market for explosives, weapons and contraband services (Design and Analysis, Installation, Service and Maintenance, and Training), IHS found that continued funding shortages in North America and Europe are causing end-users to prolong the life of their aging EWC detection equipment. This, in conjunction with the large installed base of EWC detection equipment, is expected to result in increased service and maintenance revenues in these regions. However, IHS expects the service and maintenance market in the emerging regions (the Middle East and Latin America), to be driven by new equipment purchases which will increase the installed base of equipment. IHS found that the global service and maintenance market was worth $1.06 billion in 2013, and is forecast to increase by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.1% over the forecast period, 2013 to 2018. The biggest surprise was the forecasted 7.4% CAGR in the cargo and vehicle market. IHS

estimated the cargo and vehicle service and maintenance market to be the largest of all product types (Baggage and Parcel, Cargo and Vehicle, Hold Baggage, People Screening, Multi-application), in 2013 worth $358.2 million. IHS found that large gantry X-ray equipment and mobile cargo screening vehicles required increased levels of service and maintenance due to the large number of moving parts and the complexity of the technology. Overall, the global service and maintenance market is forecast to see faster growth starting in 2016 and continuing through 2018. IHS expects the transition to Computed Tomography (CT) hold baggage screening equipment in the aviation market to be the main contributor to this increase. CT hold baggage equipment carries a significantly higher cost compared to single or multi-view X-ray equipment and IHS found that service and maintenance cost were also higher compared to other types of hold baggage equipment. Historically, the emerging regions have had a limited installed base of EWC equipment and the cost of developing a local service and maintenance capability outweighed the possible revenues. As budgets decline in Western countries, and emerging regions move to purchase new EWC detection equipment, the service and maintenance market is poised to see continued growth. Therefore, knowing which industries and regions to target first, and how service and maintenance varies by country will provide suppliers with a significant competitive advantage.

Middle East and Africa Forecast for Strong Growth Opportunity in Access Control, with CAGR of 14.8%

T

he EMEA region continued to make strides toward recovery in 2013 and is expected to see moderate growth from 2014 through 2015 for traditional electronic access control. For traditional access control, IHS has estimated growth of about 3.1% in 2014. When including electronic locks (mechatronic, digital cylinder and electromechanical), IHS estimated a growth of about 7.4% in 2014. According to IHS’s 2014 report on access control, the Middle East and African regions are forecast to be worth about $180 million in 2014, which combine to have a CAGR of about 15% from 2013 through 2018. IHS found that many countries across the Middle East are searching for and installing the most cutting edge technology available. To encourage best of breed adoption, many countries in the Middle East have programs in place to reduce the amount of counterfeit product entering the country, such as Saudi Arabia with the Intertek program. IHS expects this program is helping to keep margins higher than in other parts of the region. For Africa, many international banks and

regional banks have been investing in expansion across the African continent. When banks expand and/ or new banks are created, this presents a growth opportunity for electronic access control. In the past, South Africa represented

the most opportunity for access control adoption but this may be changing soon. In April 2014 Nigeria’s official statistics agency released rebased GDP data – the first such revision since 1990 – providing a more accurate assessment of the economy. criminal activity. Secondly, employees needed a system that would assist with patient control, particularly during night shifts when only a few nurses are on duty. Finally, the department needed to easily review footage to assess and improve customer service levels. The Tampere project included over 335 Avigilon HD cameras across all properties, monitored 24/7 and managed using the Avigilon Control Center (ACC) software with High Definition Stream Management (HDSM) technology. The department also relies on Avigilon analogue video encoders and Avigilon network video recorders (NVRs) to store up to two weeks of continuous surveillance footage. The user-friendly ACC software allows Rae to quickly search through footage for accurate identification and efficient investigations. “With exceptional image clarity, we can now find the right evidence in a fraction of the time,” claimed Rae, who also regularly shares footage with local police, “Our footage has led to warnings, dismissals, and even conviction in several cases, and we have also noticed a marked increase in confessions because the image quality is truly indisputable.” Not only does the Avigilon system allow the department to focus on improving security, but it has also helped save on costs that stem from property damage and theft. In addition, the department has also lowered the number of liability claims since deploying the Avigilon solution.

he Federal Republic of Somalia took another step toward the establishment of law and order with the launch of two new citizen ID programs: a new national ID card and e-passport. n South Africa’s Western Cape Province lies the town of Strand. Known for its beautiful beaches, the town also has excellent academic facilities, with one of these being Strand High School. Fortunately, Strand High School offers a peaceful learning environment to provide an excellent Afrikaans school education for its student body. Recently however, as a proactive measure, school administrators drew up plans for a security solution that would: ● make sure that school rules and regulations are adhered to. ● decrease occurrences of bullying. ● offer clear video surveillance of school entrances and exits. ● monitor any individual entering onto, or leaving, school property. ● offer clear video surveillance over athletic fields and general school grounds.

From idea to reality

I

n essence, administrators wanted a CCTV solution that would provide surveillance over access control and the

school’s general grounds. To turn this idea into a reality, Hikvision’s official South African distributer, Sensor, and South African security installer Cam Live Vision combined to design, and install a solution that addresses these security goals. front and back of the school building, PTZ functionality offers a full 360° of coverage. However, this PTZ functionality is only one piece of the puzzle. Another was a 20x optical zoom that provides the coverage needed for all the school, in its entirety. Box cameras for indoor and other areas

ikvision box cameras were chosen for indoor locations and specific outdoor areas. The DS2CD864F-E(W) 1.3MP network box camera was combined with Hikvision’s TV0309D-MPIR lens to view indoor school hallways, indoor cafeteria, and outdoor courtyard space. As with the previous speed dome, great megapixel resolution was also a must. However with the addition of the TV0309D-MPIR lens, spaces that experience difficult lighting are properly addressed. This is due to the lens’ varifocal IR function and auto iris – provid-

ince Strand High School’s Principal and Vice-Principal use their PCs to conveniently monitor this IP solution, Hikvision’s iVMS software was combined with the DS-9632NI-ST embedded NVR. As this NVR supports 32 IP camera channels, it is an excellent tool to allow these administrators

access to whichever camera that is currently needed. This comes in particularly handy during peak hours, such as the morning (with students arriving) and the afternoon (with them leaving for the day). And the results are already in: after only one week using this solution, instances of bullying decreased. Bekker noted this was confirmed by both students and Strand’s Principal. CP group is a global leader in phosphate and its derivative markets. Headquartered in Morocco, it recently upgraded its video surveillance system with Dahua HD IP solution. he Royal Docks Management Agency is responsible for the security of one of the largest enclosed docks in the world. 13 meters deep and 4km long, the docks cover an area the size of

central London, an entire acre of which is land. This leisure water haven is managed from a security base in the King George V Control Centre, which also provides security for the surrounding area, which encompasses London City Airport and the Excel Centre. Providing surveillance for this complex site presents a number of challenges, such as wide geographic areas and difficult light conditions. In addition, the high level of public traffic means that operators have to quickly identify and respond to specific incidents. The previous security system was failing to

meet those challenges, having poor image detail and a difficult user interface, which slowed operator response time. The high volumes of pedestrian traffic across the Royal Victoria footbridge during events and the activities in the

area now known as the Royal Victoria Beach meant that updating this security system was vital.

Solution

A

rran Henderson at DSSL Group was asked to design a new system to meet these increasing security needs. Standard Definition (SD) cameras have been replaced by IndigoVision’s High Definition (HD) BX cameras. Active RFID/ RTLS Healthcare Solutions Located on the 111-acre campus of Devon Partnership NHS Trust’s Langdon Hospital in the south Devon countryside, the recently built £27m Dewnans Centre – a medium-secure mental health facility – provides care and treatment for people with a wide variety of mental health needs

P

roviding a combination of care, therapy and recreation, the centre seeks to support people’s recovery goals in a setting in which security is necessary, but must be handled in an unobtrusive manner, allowing people access in and around the buildings without feeling locked in. Dewnans is a large complex site, encompassing four wards with 60 en-suite rooms and extensive therapy facilities. Each ward functions as a self-contained unit with separate courtyard gardens, TV lounges, laundry, interview rooms, offices, arts and crafts centres, and dining

room. There are also treatment rooms, workshops, a library and computer centre, music room, sports barn, café, and administrative offices on site.

Introduction

T

his newest addition to the National Health Service’s (NHS) portfolio of mental health inpatient facilities stands as the first unit to come online under the newly revised design guide for medium secure units. The

new guidelines outline design criteria for medium-secure facilities, ranging from principles for room design and maintaining service integrity to testing schedules for building materials. Key among these principles is that materials and components used at Dewnans be both tamper and vandal proof whilst maintaining the level of security and safety required for such a facility.

Solution: Elpas RTLS

L

ogiscan Security Systems Ltd., the security integrator for this yearlong project, selected the Elpas real-time location system (RTLS) from Tyco Security Products as the backbone for its access control and alarm project. The integrator chose the system after recognizing that Elpas’ Active RFID/ RTLSbased system could operate within the constraints of the anti-vandalism directives and withstand a typically harsh environment. The Elpas system could address the Dewnans Centre’s large open spaces and usable space both inside and outside, as well as the unique components of the anti-tampering and anti-vandalism scheme that provided further design constraints. To address the concerns with vandalism, the Elpas radio frequency (RF) readers and low frequency (LF) exciters were positioned in such a June 2014

RFs were installed in high locations, whilst LFs were installed inside doorframes of each patient’s living area. Readers below 3m were positioned behind Lexan Marguard plastic and held in place by anti-tamper screws to make them vandal resistant. This is unlike a traditional proximity system that would need readers positioned where patients and staff had access to them, exposing the equipment to possible vandalism. Another necessary feature for the security system was it needed to avoid having a single point of failure, calling for an architecture that was mainly controller-led vs. relying solely on a single-server computer. The

Dewnans project is designed with 38 controller-led networks positioned within individual firebreaks. Each controller is independent of the others, so if one goes down, the rest of the system stays online and the backend server acts only as an event reporting system. Additionally, there are fixed wire LED call points within each patient living area and fixed wire ‘patient attack’ call buttons in the communal areas. “This project presented unique challenges in identifying a system that would meet the security needs in an unobtrusive style, whilst still complying with the new standards,” said Paul Cavill, Engineering Director of Logiscan, “Fortunately, the Elpas system addressed those issues with its multi-application approach and Active RFID/ RTLS technology.” The installation involved 160-plus doors that can be controlled by both the staff members via personnel identitystyle tags, and patients through wrist tags with electronic tamper monitoring. The tags transmit data to the reader, and in turn, each reader relays real-time tag

data to the system. Two-button ID tags provide staff access to offices and patient rooms, as needed, with the press of a button. Otherwise, the tags operate in a handsfree manner. The ID tags additionally include a staff duress feature that enables responders to know the exact location of the staff member in duress and provide a quicker response to the emergency call. Hospital staff on each of the four wards as well as in the hospital’s main

control centre can view the RTLS tags worn by employees and patients via use of the Elpas software, which presents the location of active tags on a graphical map of the facility. Tied into the system are also paging and public address features. As a true multi-application system, the Elpas RTLS combines access control, nurse call and staff attack in a single system, making it easier for Logiscan to install and maintain, and for Dewnans Centre staff to operate. The Elpas RFID/ RTLS at the Dewnans Centre can accommodate additional spinoffs as needed and budgeted.This can include drug storage key tracking and location, preventing staff from leaving the premises with sensitive keys; asset tracking; and even location logic to identify which patients can or cannot be in the same area at the same time. Elpas also offers the ability to provide temperature monitoring, staff/ resident escort functionality and building automation solutions.

SS – a Japanese car auction company – was looking at systems that would guide drive-in members to free spaces in the parking area. They were also looking for a system to maintain security. The company ultimately decided to deploy Sony’s SNC-CH110 network

cameras. The SNC-CH110’s auto-exposure adjustment capability delivers a consistent wide-angle image even when there is backlighting in the field, allowing each camera to cover four parking spaces. The deployed cameras were successfully linked with the parking-area control system, enabling smooth guidance to free parking spots. The resulting images are also effective in maintaining security.

identify free spaces in the area. The resulting data is transmitted to a car guidance system, which displays the relevant information on an electronic board, and controls driver guide lamps accordingly. The installed system delivers effective guidance to free spaces.

Results

M

embers who arrive in cars that they are putting up for auction will occasionally park in the general parking area – rather than in the separate area specifically set up for this purpose – and leave their car behind when returning home. With the current system, each driver presents an IC card when entering the area, and the system records both the card number and the car’s license plate number. With the new cameras in place,

it is now a simple matter to identify and contact owners of cars that have been left behind – correcting a longstanding problem of cars left for long periods of time.

Why Sony was selected

W

hen USS was considering methods for identifying free spaces, it was suggested that analysis of images obtained from a security and monitoring system could be used in place of conventional sensors. Use of the SNCCH110 network camera was a promising alternative – the wide-angle view from each camera could cover four spaces, and the required wiring would be significantly reduced. Further investigation confirmed that the cameras could be deployed at much lower cost

than sensors. In addition, the use of a security and monitoring system was deemed essential for capturing evidence that could be used in cases of accidents, which occur with relative frequency in parking areas. It became clear that a very efficient solution would be to use a single camera system to deliver both the security functions and the sensor functions. Many cameras currently on the market, however, are not sufficiently effective for these tasks: they may fail to provide good imaging under backlit conditions, or fail to provide sufficiently high-quality images, or break down too easily or too often. Sony’s product, however, is extremely durable, and delivers bright and clear imaging even under adverse conditions.

For the adaptive traffic control in Serbia several RIVA RC6802HD mini-bullet cameras are used. These cameras are ideally suited for indoor and outdoor as well as day and night usage. Each camera includes eight built-in high power IR LED illuminators with an illumination distance up to 10m. The infrared light is automatically adjusted according to the brightness of the scene. A frame rate of up to 30 fps at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels (Full-HD) is achieved. Moreover, the mini-bullet cameras offer features like a micro SD card slot for local recording, dual video stream, ONVIFcompatibility, PoE, D-WDR and a lot more. Like in all RIVA devices the standard version of the intelligent video analytics, powered by VCA Technology, is integrated in the RC6802 as a standard feature at no extra cost. Additionally the cameras were equipped with the dwell filter for this project. Mounting and installation of the RIVA cameras was done by the company SELMA. Founded in 1989 in Subotica, it

was one of the first private companies in Yugoslavia. After the installation of the intelligent cameras the traffic flow was significantly improved. With the RIVA cameras and the special analytic filters, incoming objects can be detected without any problems. The video analytics differentiates between cars, motorcycles, bicycles and persons. Furthermore, the waiting time at the crossroads and the travel direction of moving vehicles is recognized. If a predefined number of vehicles queue at a traffic light, it can be switched directly from red to green. If vehicles queue too long and have to wait several

traffic light phases to cross the road, the traffic light can be switched as well. Because data is transmitted in real-time the direct adjustment of all traffic lights to the actual traffic demand is no problem. Beside the improvement of traffic flow, adaptive traffic control offers many other advantages. Reduced waiting periods and less frequent stops at traffic lights significantly reduce the environmental impact, as CO2 emission and energy consumption decrease. Also the noise level comes down due to the avoidance of constant start-ups and slow-downs. In addition, huge amounts of costs are saved. Beside the direct adjustment of the traffic lights the video analytics can be used to collect data about the daily traffic. This data can be used for longtime analytics. The results of these analytics can help with town planning, to determine speed limits or to create statistics. Also, relationships and dependencies of traffic flows with other factors like weather, holidays or special events can be analyzed.

he grocery chain’s corporate security & loss prevention department had approached F&N Enterprises of Tucson, AZ to upgrade its regional facilities, including grocery stores, petrol stations and regional distribution cent F&N were given a brief to submit a solution that would integrate the most cost-effective and progressive surveillance technology, increase overall systems’ camera count, and accommodate the easy relocation of existing cameras when and where required.

Each of the grocery chain’s locations varied slightly in camera count, where typically, stores required scene coverage from anywhere between 24 to 64 cameras. Whereas the chain’s distribution centres would need over 100 cameras added to each site.
