Storage

n sizing a video solution, estimating the proper amount of storage is key because storage can represent the most hardware- and cost-intensive component of a design. If not properly understood and estimated correctly, it can quickly make a project exceed its allocated budget. In addition to video characteristics, strong consideration must also be given to how the video will be used. Will it be used strictly for monitoring or will it be used for training or evidentiary

purposes later? If data will be stored for later use, how long will it need to be kept? Weeks? Months? Years? The answer to these questions will vary by the types of video being stored. The number of actual cameras and video feeds on the system will also influence the amount of storage and in some cases, the types of available storage will influence the video characteristics of a solution design. For example, if storage capacity is budget constrained, a frame rate of 15 fps will allow for storage of more video footage than 30 fps when all else is equal.

Highest possible resolution for the North and South ends

he heart of this new video installation is the patented Panomera® system, a so-called multifocal sensor system. Unlike conventional cameras, which rely on single lenses, the multifocal sensor system operates with multiple lenses, each with a different focal length. This new sensor concept makes it possible to provide surveillance over a vast

n all, about 100 cameras are used to oversee the entire stadium area including the stands, the inner building, entrances and exits, and even the car parks. In the course of the modernisation, depending on their condition the existing cameras were either replaced with Dallmeier dome cameras or box cameras with integrated infrared illumi-

nation, or were incorporated in the new system. Four workstations, all equipped with the SeMSy® Management System and the Panomera® Viewer, have been set up in the command centre for the police. Another three workstations are located in the Welcome Area West, the Stewards’ Office and the Engineering Room. This enables the security staff and stewards to be deployed optimally in the stadium during matches, and even areas such as the stairwells or lifts can be overseen reliably. In addition, all status reports from the PGuard advance analysis software are routed to the

workstation in the engineering room, so the staff there is informed automatically if a fan or a camera malfunctions for example.

DM Drugstores installs HIKVISION

hen the German giant, DM Drugstores, decided to upgrade their existing CCTV solution for each of their stores across the country, they chose Hikvision and as is custom, they did so because Hikvision offers a quality that is unrivaled in the security landscape. Christian Berkigt, Chief Development Officer at VeViTec-GmbH (the developer of this solution) remarked, “Obviously quality is a huge issue for any German corporation. In this regard, we felt confident that Hikvision would fully meet the demands of both DM Drugstores and VeViTec-GmbH. But, what equally impressed us was Hikvision’s technical support – it really made this solution come together.” But this solution was not a simple one-step process that is often customary in large CCTV solutions of this variety. Instead of the traditional melding of preexisting analog and newly purchased IP components into a cost-saving hybrid model, VeViTec-GmbH chose an altogether different route. VeViTec-GmbH initially utilized two Hikvision PCI compression cards,

the DS-4008HCI and the DS-4016HCI. Both cards feature similar technology, such as H.264 (MPEG-4/ Part 10) realtime video compression and up to real time 4CIF recording, with the main difference being the number of channels each can connect to (8 and 16, respectively). However, these compression cards were meant as only a stop-gap.

The IP future

explained Berkigt. However, January 2012, brought a turning point for DM Drugstores. Instead of moving into the oftenused analog/ IP hybrid, DM made a total switch to IP. This shift entailed discarding all existing analog technology for this brand-new IP solution. And this is where Hikvision’s service and technology really shone. DM Drugstores wanted to place large HD monitors over the registers for their customers. Not only does this provide an elegant touch of class, it also provides a powerful visible deterrent for any would-be thief. However, DM Drugstores had an unusual request: they wanted a specially designed HDMI output on the adjacent IP camera so as to provide the ability to directly plug this camera into the HD monitor and eliminate cabling back to the server – providing efficiency, a saving of installation costs, and a cleanliness not often associated with bulky CCTV installations. A wide variety of devices have been sited throughout the Seabank Resort & Spa including 1,184 ALG-EN smoke sensors, which feature Hochiki Europe’s High Performance Chamber Technology. This minimises the differences in sensitivity experienced in flaming and smouldering fires, thereby reducing the possibility of unwanted alarms, which can be highly disruptive and have a detrimental impact on customer satisfaction. In addition, 193 ACB-E heat sensors and 83 HCP-E manual call points are complemented by a series of other devices such as dual relay modules, mains relay controllers, mini zone monitors and smoke reflective beams. The size and scale of the installation meant that it was at times a highly complex process due, in part, to the configuration of multiple addresses. Given that Firetech had only an eight month

window to install and commission the entire system, time was of the essence and Sciberras comments, “Thanks to the design of the products, once the base is installed, fitting the devices can be done extremely quickly, usually taking about 30 seconds compared to some other manufacturers’ products which can take up to 20 minutes.” BS 5839 specifies that in areas where people are sleeping the sounder level needs to be 75dB at the bed-head. To meet this requirement 631 base sounders have been used along with 23 combined base sounder beacons in specific areas where an additional visual warning is considered necessary to alert occupants. The installation was completed on time to the exact specification required and, so far, few false alarms have been reported.

Boston Borough Council, Lincolnshire O CS has been selected by Lincolnshire Council to supply, install, commission and deploy the communication infrastructure in a major fibreto-wireless switch-out and IP camera upgrade in the area of Boston. In its tender, the council challenged the industry to come up with a solution capable of meeting a broad set of requirements that would effectively reduce its overall OPEX costs over the lifetime of the contract. Through its ‘invest to save’ policy, where the council acquires central government funding, Boston had to remove the associated costs of a traditional analogue CCTV system and

reduce expensive fibre leasing costs. The brief from the council was precise and exacting, and Boston’s confidence in the ability of both partnership companies to deliver a workable solution secured the contract. In this period of austerity, many local authorities have been exploring ways to reduce costs while maintaining high levels of services. The solution

avesight, in conjunction with OCS Security Services, recommended the overall solution which is due to be installed in three phases and will be achieved using the following: ● 103 licence-exempt Wavesight wireless radios (WaveSPRINT (87), WaveMAX-N (6), WaveSPRINTTURBO MP (6), WaveSPRINT TURBO (4) &WaveFLOW (6)). ● 61 new Panasonic IP CCTV cameras. ● A series of Panasonic NVRs. ● An application connecting three main buildings in the town – Pilgrim Hospital, Assembly Rooms (nightclub) and the Town Hall. At the core of the infrastructure are three town-centre buildings (Pilgrim Hospital, Assembly Rooms and the Town Hall), connected in a ring using WaveMAX-N wireless IP transceivers. WaveMAX-N links are ideal for the backhaul transport of high-resolution real-time video and are particularly suitable for use with high-resolution megapixel cameras. The CCTV cameras will be connected to all three buildings locally and each building is connected using two WaveMAX-N links providing a fully redundant wireless system. This type of design eliminates network downtime caused by a single point of

failure and will ensure that sites will remain available even if service is interrupted to one network. The council required this network redundancy for enhanced reliability. A further two colleges, an industrial estate lying on the outskirts of the town and the Fenside housing estate will all be covered. All images at the edge will be transmitted wirelessly to the core network and then backhauled to the control room situated in the Town Hall where they will be monitored and recorded. This use of technologies effectively provides the equivalent of a leased fibre service, while also lowering operating costs and ensuring connectivity to the control room in the centre of the town. The eventual benefits of the new CCTV network will mean that the council becomes the sole owner of a dedicated, highly secure, private WLAN infrastructure, capable of growing with the demands of the end-client, and with minimal additional investment. The flexibility offered by wireless technology means that further plans and connections (such as remote car parks and other temporary camera deployments) September 2013

can be realised in a much shorter timeframe than with fixed cables laid in the ground. The typical time required to plan a deployment can be as short as one day, while deploying a CCTV network can take as little as a few hours. Commenting on the project, Steve Clift, Public Sector Sales Manager Security Services at OCS said, “For us, the decision to involve Wavesight in this project was an easy one as they’ve successfully implemented many town centre surveillance projects for local authorities across the country. Albania Extends Morpho ID Concession into e-Services

orpho (Safran) announces that it has been selected to continue providing identity document management services to Albania. The company signed an agreement with the Government of the Republic of Albania, represented by the Ministry of Interior, to extend the identity document production and distribution concession set up by Aleat* for an additional period of ten years. The agreement also includes the provision of a platform giving access to e-Services. This new step is part of the Government’s Digital Albania initiative aimed at improving delivery of public and private online services to its citizens. The concession was created in 2008 to manage the entire production process (enrollment, personalization, issuance and distribution) of high-security biometric identity cards and passports. Over 2.6 million e-Passports and 3.2 million e-ID cards have already been produced, bringing many benefits to the Albanian population. Since 2010, holders of the new e-Passports can travel in

the Schengen Area without a visa, which was previously a mandatory requirement for all Albanians. Morpho will continue to produce state-of-the-art identity documents which will integrate additional features for enhanced security. The new Morpho eTrusted Identity Services platform will provide convenient, seamless and secure access to eservices. ctive infrared beam sensors have been in use in electronic security solutions for decades. Rather than that fact making them old fashioned, the reality is that it stands testament to their effectiveness. As a cost-effective and credible solution, the detectors take some beating. Whilst the core principle of operation is a simple one – a transmitted beam needs to be received without interruption, or the unit generates an alarm – the developments have ensured that the beams offer credible and dependable performance, and cannot be ‘spoofed’ during an alarm event. Issues such as cross-talk have been eliminated, and technology ensures that the introduction of an illicit light source will not trick the unit into missing a beam break. More importantly, the installation process has been greatly simplified to ensure that the installation and configuration of beam-based solutions is a one man job! Alignment used to be a slow process, but this has not been the

The beams themselves are silent and invisible, and even if an intruder is aware of the presence of the sensors, it is not possible to know where the beams actually are. and operational flexibility, plus the fact that the units are very cost-effective, and the continued success of the technology is obvious. Whilst a number of manufacturers offer active IR beams detectors, many supply OEM product. There are some low cost IR beams available – not to be confused with ‘budget’ products from established manufacturers – but as with any detection device you get what you pay for! The principle behind these detectors might be simple; making them efficient and effective takes expertise!

Optex AX350TF The AX350TF detectors from Optex work in pairs (transmitter and receiver) and have a range of 100 metres in external use and 200 metres in internal applications. The units have four selectable frequencies. This ensures that in applications with either long perimeter runs, or where beams are stacked to create a wall-type detection pattern, cross-talk between adjacent units can be eliminated with ease. The beams are pulsed to ensure that extraneous sources of infrared light cannot be introduced to ‘trick’ the receiver unit. Light which is not pulsed at the right frequency is rejected. Also, the beam interruption can be configured dependent upon the site’s needs, with 4 selectable periods: 50, 100, 250 and 500 milliseconds are the options. Alarm period is 2 seconds. The unit requires both beams to be interrupted to trigger an alarm, eliminating nuisance activations created by animals, birds or wind-borne objects. Power to the unit is 10.5-30V DC, and current draw is 60mA in normal operation. The cover is tamper protected, and the main alarm output is a Form C relay. The sensors are sealed to IP54, and the cover design incorporates anti-frost protection. That said, the unit will operate with up to 99 per cent beam loss due to environmental conditions. It also features an environmental disqualification circuit to generate a trouble alarm if the beam strength falls below an

acceptable level. Operating temperature is -35 to 60°C. Installation is straightforward. The detector head can be aligned through ±90° horizontally, and ±10° vertically. The sensor is supplied with pole mount brackets. Once mounted, ensure the transmitter and receiver pair is using the same frequency. The transmitter should then be set up using its simple viewfinder for initial optical alignment. There are adjustment screws to aid with the positioning of the detector head. Final adjustments are made at the receiver unit, and a series of LEDs indicate alignment accuracy. A blocking card is supplied to allow adjustment of each mirror. Once this process is finalised then the setting can be checked using a voltmeter; a jack is included for this purpose. The final stage is to set the beam interruption time and walk test the device. Once installed, the AX350TF behaved as expected. General stability was very good, and there were no nuisance activations. Even in very high winds (high enough to blow down a fence on the site) the unit only required a slight adjustment to the beam interruption time. During the test period there was only an occasional mild frost, and this did not affect the unit at all. All genuine activity was detected, and even attempts to defeat the unit with high-speed breaches were detected. Indeed, the accuracy of the unit served as a reminder of just how effective these units are when used for perimeter-based applications. Finally, the AX350TF beams are supplied with a well written and clear set of installation instructions. The wiring diagrams are easy to follow, and whilst the manual covers a few different products, it is always clear which specific device the information relates to.

Takex PB-IN-50HF The PB-IN-50HF detectors from Takex are supplied as a pair (transmitter and receiver) and have a range of 50 metres in external use and 100 metres in internal applications. The detectors are quad beam units, and feature

four selectable frequencies to eliminate crosstalk where multiple beams are used to effectively seal off an area, or where units are stacked or used back-to-back to cover longer distances. The beams are ‘double modulated’ to offer what Takex claims is the best level of light immunity available from its products. The units are also designed to reject infrared light from other sources, thereby ensuring that beam interruptions cannot be concealed. The beam interruption time can be adjusted to best suit environmental conditions. The range of adjustment is 50 to 700 milliseconds. All four of the beams need to be interrupted to trigger an alarm condition. This ensures that small animals, birds or wind-borne objects don’t generate nuisance alarm activations. Alarm time is 1.5 seconds. Power to the unit is 12-30V DC, and current draw is 60mA in normal operation. The cover is tamper protected, and the main alarm output is a dry contact relay. Takex has designed the cover to include anti-frost and anti-dew protection. Automatic gain control ensures that sensitivity is increased should beam strength fall due to frost, snow, fog or heavy rain. A module generates a fault signal if the beam strength falls below an operational level. Operating temperature range is -35 to 66°C, and the unit is sealed to IP55. The gain circuitry features gain lock which ensures optimum sensitivity based upon the range; there is also an option for low or high power, with the former used for ranges under 25 metres, and the latter for longer distances. Installation of the PB-IN-50HF is a simple task. The transmitter and receiver pair must obviously be using the same channel, which is set via two DIP switches. The pair are then optically aligned. Both units feature viewfinders for this purpose, and these are built in to the detectors. Fine adjustment is carried out using screws. More accurate adjustments are made using a ‘beeper’ system which provides an audible tone to indicate when alignment is correct. A blocking card is supplied to allow adjustment of each

element. The final adjustments are made using a voltmeter; a jack is included for this purpose. The beam interruption time should then be set and the unit must be walk tested to ensure that rapid motion is not missed. With regard to mounting, the detector head can be aligned through ±90° horizontally, and ±10° vertically. The sensor is supplied with pole mount brackets as standard. As expected, the PB-IN-50HF showed good manners throughout the test, including during a period of gale-force winds. Stability was high with no nuisance activations. Once the beam interruption time was configured correctly, the unit was extremely stable. An audible tone confirms that the auto gain lock is functioning once the unit is installed. With regard to adverse weather, aside from high winds the test site only suffered an occasional mild frost, which had no adverse effect. All intrusions into the protected area were detected, and both high-speed and low speed breaches did not cause any concern with regard to catch performance. The beams are supplied with a decent set of instructions including wiring diagrams.

Verdict That both manufacturers in the test are considered to be market-leaders – and experts – in active infrared detection is clear from the product quality and performance. It is difficult to separate the units, and it’s the small details that will be relevant when selecting which option to go for. Both companies offer a wide range of units with differing configurations and coverage ranges, so it is very much a case of considering the differences which – in reality – aren’t huge! The Optex beams are well built, effective and easy to install. Connections are clearly marked, and the adjustments are simple too. All in all, the AX350TF does deliver what you’d expect from an active infrared beam detector. There is equally little that will concern installers and integrators when considering the Takex units. Performance is high, and the units behave as expected. As such, there’s little that will disappoint.

Keeping in the Picture Vigilant Vision - ASM19LED-WGF

Consumer demand is driving the display market towards LED units, with LCD models becoming a budget choice. In the video surveillance market, this change is increasingly having an impact as economies of scale make LED units more costeffective. Benchmark looks at the ASM19LED-WGF from Vigilant Vision to see if it offers superior performance.

ED displays have shot to prominence in the consumer market, and increasingly such consumer trends are echoed in the world of video surveillance. Changes with regard to displays have not always been driven by outright quality - the CRT monitor wasn’t dethroned by the LCD display because it had inferior performance - but the hype relating to LED panels does indicate that quality should be enhanced over LCD alternatives. Of course, you have to understand that LED monitors use LCD technology; the LEDs are used for backlighting rather than the more common CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamps)

technology. The message in the consumer market is that LED monitors are thinner, greener, and feature enhanced colour depth and accuracy; however, there is some debate as to how much better the image is on units in the low to medium price range.

While some might question why the hype from the consumer market affects the video surveillance sector, it’s because it become necessary to manage users’ expectations if they opt for LED displays. Vigilant Vision offers a range of displays aimed at the security sector, and the ASM19LED-WGF is its 19 inch LED option.

Specification The ASM19LED-WGF is a 19 inch LED colour monitor with a metal case and glass front. Resolution is 1280 x 1024, and the display has a 4:3 aspect ratio. The monitor is multistandard, supporting PAL and NTSC video. The display is quoted as delivering 16.7 million colours, with selectable colour temperature for fine adjustment. Response time is specified as 5ms, and contrast ratio is 10000:1 with a brightness specification of 300cd/m2. The display’s connections are made via the left-hand side of the monitor. There are two BNC inputs with outputs for video, a VGA connection and an HDMI socket. The model also boasts phono sockets for audio in, as well as socket for PC audio in. It has two integral 1.5W speakers for audio output. Power input is 12V DC. The front of the display contains the user controls. There are six buttons: Menu, Select, -, +, Auto and Power. There is also a status LED for power. Other features include viewing angles of 80 and 85 degrees (V and H), multi-language OSD, PIP and POP modes, and various adjustments: picture mode, brightness,

contrast, colour, tint, sharpness, colour temperature and noise reduction. The monitor is supplied with a hinged stand, a PSU and a VGA cable. The manual is brief but sufficient.

Installation As you would expect, the physical installation of the ASM19LED-WGF is a very simple task. It’s a simple case of making the video connection, adding audio if required, and powering the monitor. Configurations are carried out using the fascia buttons. The menus are relatively straightforward, and you’ll soon get used to how the buttons navigate the structure. There are four menu groups: picture, sound, settings and PIP; the latter handles multi-screen options. The picture menu handles image quality settings, and includes pre-set modes as well as a user-configurable setting where contrast, brightness, tint, saturation and sharpness are individually configurable. We’d recommend this mode! Other picture settings include colour temperature and noise reduction. The sound menu handles volume, with a mute option, and the settings screen deals with operating language, image size and position, clock and phase (for VGA inputs only) and scale (Full screen 4:3 image, or 16:9). The PIP menu page is used for multiple source images. Options are PIP (an inset box containing the second source image), and POP (side by side images). The later are scaled and so appear stretched. The PIP box location can be selected, as can its size. Once the settings are complete and the menu closed, some of the buttons have secondary uses. The Select button calls up a source choice, navigated using the + and buttons. Also, the + and - buttons can be used to tweak screen brightness.

Performance Judging any type of display in isolation is a tough task; without any reference, images will typically either look poor or good, dependent upon expectations. Without such reference, the overall feel from the Test Team was that the Vigilant Vision display delivered good quality images. We preferred the User image

mode, as it could be finely configured, and whilst the detail was on a par with what we’d expect from a 19 inch LCD display, colours seemed to be more accurate, with a higher level of depth and fidelity. Benchmark uses a selection of LCD displays, which have been proven to be amongst the best performing, so these were used as a reference point to better judge the ASM19LEDWGF’s image quality. Detail was, as we had expected, very similar. The LED screen certainly offered image quality that was every bit as good as the best that the LCD displays could offer - and it must be remembered that the test LCD displays we use are the best we’ve found! The difference, however, was to do with luminance and chrominance. Colour fidelity was pretty similar, but colours on the LED display looked slightly more natural. Overall tone was also more consistent with the actual scene. It was also mentioned by a few that the LED image seemed ‘easier on the eye’. We asked a small sample of end users which display they would prefer to view (without explaining the differences), and the majority opted for the LED monitor!

Verdict The biggest driver for LED displays will be end user demand. That, coupled with the fact that LED backlighting is ‘greener’ than CCFL options, will cause demand to increase. The improvement of the ASM19LED-WGF over the best LCD displays is marginal, but if LED is wanted, this display will certainly deliver the right quality!

Talk to most people about illumination for video surveillance, and they immediately think of infrared light. Whilst IR does have benefits, it also has one weakness, and that is the loss of colour in captured images. White light can offer multiple benefits to video surveillance; Benchmark looked at the WL436-60-24 from Iluminar to find out more.

round-the-clock surveillance was once fraught with compromise. However, the introduction of surface mount LEDs has seen the cost of illuminators tumble, and today almost any application can benefit from true 24 hour video surveillance. It is interesting that when it comes to additional illumination for video surveillance, the almost automatic response is to specify infrared lighting. Whilst infrared lighting is very good - it is discreet, so some criminals will be unaware they are being viewed, and it provides a good level of contrast - it does have one significant downside, and that is a lack of colour information. Colour is an automatic identifier. Using colour in such a way is a natural reaction for most people. Tell a system operator to find a suspicious vehicle, and he might struggle when flicking through the camera views. Tell him itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a red vehicle, and he can then process those views

much faster. With infrared lighting, a red vehicle is grey, as is a blue or green one! White light delivers colour information. White light does need careful use, but many of the light pollution issues are avoidable. Indeed, much of the negative thinking about white light was created many years ago by infrared lighting salesmen! Iluminar offers a range of infrared lighting, but it also offers white light options too.

Specification The WL436-60-24 is a white light video surveillance illuminator. The unit has a range of 53 metres, with an angle of illumination of 60 degrees. Brightness is quoted as 2784 lumens, and colour temperature is 6500K, which is similar to daylight. The unit uses energy efficient high powered LEDs. The illuminator uses 24 LEDs, and the current is controlled using integral circuitry. Power consumption is 39 watts. The illuminator is sealed to IP67, and is housed in a rugged extruded anodised aluminium housing with a polycarbonate protective lens. The unit incorporates an integral mounting bracket. The unit has a photocell for automated switching. This is adjustable, but defaults to switching on at around 30 lux and off at around 70 lux. Alternatively it can be disabled and an external telemetry signal can be used.

The unit has a socket for a trigger connection; this is modular but a connector is not included. Other features include power adjustment and a pressure relief valve. Benchmark has looked at Iluminar products before, and they have always been well constructed and robust. The EL436-60-24 follows that trend, and we don’t see any reason to expect anything different with regard to longevity in the field. Expected life is quoted as 10 years.

Installation As you would expect, the physical installation of the WL436-60-24 won’t create any issues for competent installers. It’s really a case of mounting the unit, making a telemetry connection (if the function is being used) and a power connection. The unit is supplied with a 3 metre flylead for the latter, which should be more than enough. Power input is 12V DC or 24V AC. Once up and running, the rest of the set-up can be completed once darkness falls. The unit needs to be aligned with the camera field of view, and any adjustments to power and the switching level for the photocell are then made. Then that’s it. The illuminator is supplied with a generic illuminator installation guide, and it’s fair to say that you probably won’t need it.

Performance Viewing light is a slightly subjective thing. Whilst range and coverage can be assessed, light quality is less of a science with regard to what creates a good image for a user. For example, video surveillance images usually favour warm hues, because this gives more reality to skin tones. However, after many years of looking at images, we actually prefer accurate colour fidelity, which looks a bit cold to some. In order to assess the overall quality of light, we ran a variety of cameras using the Iluminar unit and a generic ‘white’ flood light. The difference was stunning. Using the Iluminar unit, colours were very accurate, and whilst they lacked a small amount of vibrancy that you get in daylight, they certainly weren’t

washed out or faded. The generic floodlight showed colours as faded and obviously offtone. Blues had a tinge of green about them, and reds were more muddy than red. It wasn’t just the general view that looked better with the Iluminar unit; colour test charts and tonal variations were all replicated with a higher degree of accuracy. Range of the unit was good, and whilst we wouldn’t recommend pushing the unit beyond its specifications, we would consider 53 metres to be conservative. Within the specified range, the coverage was uniform to the very edges of the viewed area. The light was also consistent, and the image showed no signs of hotspots or fade. With a very high resolution camera fitted with a high quality lens, there were no aberrations or issues with the light coverage. Switching using the photocell was reliable. Tweaking the unit for the application didn’t take long, and over the period of the test the unit was consistent with its switching point. Some illuminators have the photocell on the rear of the unit, which can cause problems, but Iluminar has sited theirs with some thought!

Verdict There are many who prefer white light to infrared illumination, and in applications where there aren’t light pollution issues, it does provide a credible alternative. The Benchmark test team was roughly split down the middle as to whether it was a preferred option to infrared illumination. The Iluminar unit is well built, and performs well. Indeed, we found that our test unit exceeded the specifications, and whilst we wouldn’t recommend totally ignoring the specs, you can certainly push them a little if you need too. Light quality was good and clean, and when tested with a range of cameras - including high resolution options - there was no obvious issues with coverage. If you are seeking white light illumination, then you could do a lot worse than considering this unit!

Fast Track Integration for

Executive summary

he high financial and reputational costs of railway accidents, even non-fatal ones, have led railway infrastructure managers to adopt increasingly sophisticated preventive maintenance regimes. However, the ability of railway operators and maintenance engineers to prevent costly system failures and optimize resource allocation depends on myriad wayside condition statuses provided by separate monitoring systems. These data acquisition systems often comprise many sensors, transducers, and remote terminal units running on different platforms and closed communication protocols, which can make maintenance more challenging and costly. To ensure journey reliability and reduce expenditures, infrastructure managers and system integrators for railways should use a single, integrated condition monitoring platform that provides railway operators with ready access to all relevant statuses for predictive maintenance and asset management. This paper will discuss how railway operators are adopting increasingly sophisticated condition-based maintenance regimes to control costs and improve track performance, some of the key difficulties system integrators need to overcome when de-

ploying wayside condition monitoring systems for railway preventive maintenance, and how using a single condition monitoring platform can save time and costs for deployment and maintenance.

Overview

n the coming years, system integrators for railways around the world will need to provide innovative solutions to help infrastructure managers curb maintenance and renewal costs, and also ensure high track performance and safety at the same time. In addition to performing schedule-based preventive maintenance, condition-based maintenance regimes are becoming more robust and increasingly used by infrastructure managers to preempt future failures. As a result, system integrators for railways can better serve the needs of infrastructure managers and railway operators by noting the following budgetary and performance concerns when integrating a cost-effective wayside monitoring solu-

tion for preventive maintenance.

Schedule-based planned maintenance ince the 1980s, preventive maintenance regimes have been used in the railway industry in the form of schedulebased maintenance (also called planned maintenance). The goal of planned maintenance is to improve equipment life by preventing excess depreciation and impairment through scheduled service visits. Although schedule-based maintenance is still better than waiting until disaster strikes to perform corrective maintenance, and offers infrastructure managers easier maintenance planning and budgeting, traditional planned maintenance is far from optimal as costly system failures can easily emerge before scheduled service visits. The problem with a purely schedulebased maintenance regime, however, is that maintenance tasks and intervals are determined according to component manufacturers’ recommendations and, more crudely, minimum legal requirements. Naturally, changing environmental conditions and intensity of use can shorten the useful life of a system component. In addition, hidden and unresolved damages or design defects

can manifest in system failures before scheduled service visits or the average end-of-life wear-out stage begins. Condition-based predictive maintenance n addition to using schedule-based preventive maintenance, railways are also turning to condition-based maintenance (also called predictive maintenance) in which operators keep an eye on critical indicators that provide warnings about possible equipment failures. To optimize resources and efficiency, maintenance engineers need a clear and comprehensive picture of all railway equipment statuses in order to determine which parts to replace and when to perform service visits. As a result, infrastructure managers have been adopting predictive maintenance regimes where maintenance tasks and service schedules are based on the real-time condition of system equipment instead of manufacturers’ recommendations or minimum legal requirements. In particular, condition-based maintenance can help improve maintenance responsiveness and agility, increase operational availability, and reduce life cycle costs of total ownership by: ● focusing maintenance on essential requirements. ● reducing excess equipment. ● eliminating unnecessary service visits that waste time and resources. For example, more granular knowledge about the resilience of assets gathered by improved remote condition monitoring systems can help railway operators execute targeted campaigns to improve resilience to weather events or identify hidden damage mechanisms like metal fatigue. As technologies for remote monitoring and data acquisition become more advanced, railway operators will be able to predict the likelihood of future equipment failures according to active and potential damage mechanisms. In fact, Network Rail, the primary railway operator in the United Kingdom, has made riskbased maintenance and the deployment of remote condition monitoring technology the cornerstones of its strategy for improving asset management and journey reliability. Although the predictive capabilities of various preventive maintenance regimes continue to vary, increasingly sophisticated condition-based maintenance regimes, such as risk-based maintenance, are on track to becoming best practice for the railway industry. As a result, system integrators will need to integrate remote monitoring systems to supply continuous asset information for front-end data downsizing and back-end data analysis.

Thus, deploying an integrated monitoring platform like the solution above, at each field site not only reduces excess equipment that need to be maintained, but also improves system-wide responsiveness through the elimination of unnecessary service visits and the provision of readily available asset information.

Accordingly, system integrators employed or contracted by infrastructure managers and railway operators will need to keep these performance and budgetary concerns in mind when integrating condition monitoring systems for railway preventive maintenance. Yet the system integratorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s task is far from easy. Traditional wayside condition monitoring systems for railway preventive maintenance often piece together hardware and software from different platforms that may succumb to interoperability issues and make maintenance more difficult. Moreover, system integrators need to figure out how to manage multiple asset types, deploy and maintain a highly complex and distributed system, and develop programs that deliver add-on value. Instead of using multiple hardware platforms and proprietary software solutions for different wayside monitoring subsystems, system integrators should use a single, open platform that supports multiple interfaces and provides easy data integration software. In particular, using a modular, hot-swappable hardware design with an open software platform as a template for individual wayside monitoring subsystems can save time and deployment costs compared to rigid proprietary systems. More importantly, such platforms will not only simplify the arduous task of integration, but also help infrastructure managers reduce maintenance costs without sacrificing track performance.

CCTV Tipping Point Still Coming in 2014: Network Video Surveillance Gear Sales to Surpass Analog Next Year

he CCTV and video surveillance market continues to be headed to a ‘tipping point’ in 2014, with revenue for network video overtaking analog for the first time ever next year, according to a new report entitled ‘The World Market for CCTV and Video Surveillance Equipment’ from IMS Research, now part of IHS. Analog cameras are still forecast to continue outselling network cameras in terms of shipments throughout the period to the year 2017, but higher value resides in their rivals. “Network cameras are generally higher-priced cameras with more advanced features,” said Jon Cropley,

principal analyst for video surveillance at IHS, “Therefore, even though less than 20 percent of all cameras shipped in 2012 were network cameras, the size of the market for them in terms of revenue was almost as large as that for analog cameras.” A high proportion of large and enterprise projects already use network video surveillance instead of analog equipment. Now, network equipment is increasingly being selected for smaller projects as well. Furthermore, price competition for analog cameras and digital video recorders (DVRs) is intense, with a degree of commoditization taking place for some product types,

providing further impetus for growth where network video is concerned. Overall, the world market for video surveillance equipment grew by more than 10 percent between 2011 and 2012, IHS estimates. Growth was predominantly driven by sales of network equipment in many countries where analog declined. An exception, however, was China, one of the countries where the analog market continued to grow. “The transition from analog to network video is continuing in 2013,” Cropley said, “This year the global analog space will be broadly flat while the network market will grow by more than 20 percent.”

ONVIF Expands Profile Concept with Physical Access Control, IP Video Integration Release Candidate

NVIF, the leading global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, announced the availability of the Release Candidate for Profile C, which enables interoperability between clients and devices of physical access control systems (PACS) and network-based video systems. This new Profile, which is available for review on the ONVIF website, extends the functionality of the ONVIF global interface specification into physical access control. With Profile C, systems integrators, specifiers and consultants will be able to more easily deploy an integrated IPbased video and access control solution from a variety of different video and access control providers. Compatibility between edge devices and clients helps to simplify installation and user training by reducing the need for multiple proprietary monitoring systems to handle different PACS devices. “Integration between IP-based physical access control systems and video surveillance is no longer considered a luxury in today’s market, and is becoming a necessary component for many different types of users,” said Baldvin Gislason Bern, Chairman of ONVIF’s Profile C Working Group, “With Profile C, users and specifiers will be able to

integrate the Profile C products of their choosing without relying on existing integrations between manufacturers.” As part of a physical access control system, Profile C conformant devices will be able to provide information about doors and access points in the system. Profile C conformant clients will enable the monitoring of doors, access control decisions and alarms, such as if a door is unlocked, when a door has been accessed and other similar functions. Profile C conformant clients will also provide basic door control functions such as providing access and locking/ unlocking doors. ONVIF circulates new Profiles first as a ‘Release Candidate’ for six months, allowing members and stakeholders a final implementation review. When that process is complete, the final Profile is published and technology providers will be able to test their products for conformance to the final version of Profile C. As part of the inclusion of physical access control to the scope of ONVIF, the ONVIF Network Interface Specification Set version 2.3 has also been released. This update incorporates new services for physical access control clients and devices and also includes a number of minor clarifications for better interoperability among ONVIF conformant clients and devices. The ONVIF test specification set has also been updated with the Access Control Test Specification and Door Control Test Specifications for the new physical access control services. Designing the Right Solution for

hy do you feel City Surveillance projects fail to deliver at the right time when it is required the most? There are various reasons for this. The first aspect is the operations part which includes the formation of the right core tendering committee, the tendering and evaluation process, the shortlisting of right vendors and finally, awarding the  contract to the right solution provider. The second aspect is the technology part of the entire solution. In this article, we will elaborate on the second aspect which is in our control and can be worked upon. There are a few observations we come across at city surveillance projects across the country, which are elaborated below. While selecting a CCTV camera for city surveillance applications, you need to consider a minimum of 1280x960p resolution. As these cameras are used for outdoor applications, day/ night cameras which work on ultra-low light technologies should be used. The cameras should preferably work on low light colour technology, as identifying colour of a vehicle or identifying colour of the clothes a suspect is wearing are very crucial in investigating a case. The cameras should have an extended dynamic range of 120db as a minimum; this would help in identifying people

There are advantages and disadvantages of using these cameras – the advantage being it’s low cost as it has an integrated camera, integrated IR LEDs, and a standard varifocal lens in a cost effective environmental enclosure.
