Welcome to our launch issue...
S
ince our launch, Destination Golf has been doing its bit to tell the 400,000 golfers in Ireland about the best golf destinations in Spain and Portugal.
The Tourism Industry is looking to the future, and all statistics are leading towards an ever-increasing level of outbound tourism. As for golfers, Spain and Portugal may well be the big boys of European golf tourism, but across our pages we hope to highlight some of the best Iberian courses and to whet your appetite for other far flung golf destinations. Each month we will bring you a new golf travel edition, designed as a visual publication to promote golf courses and golf resorts around the globe. We don’t believe in writing pages and pages of text about a golf course or resort, as the Internet has plenty of information already. The aim of Destination Golf Travel is to become an initial point of reference, which we achieve by displaying the best in photography and direct web links. In our first edition, we’re highlighting the resorts of Martinhal Beach & Resort in the Algarve, and Casa Magna Resort in Mexico. Our Travel team has visited the fairways of Las Vegas and the Nevada Desert, while our golf resort feature is on La Quinta resort in Marbella, Spain. Destination Golf Travel aims to provide a visually appealing magazine, perfectly designed for an appealing five or ten minute ‘flick’ to accompany your lunch break or evening surf. If you would like to pursue more than that, then each golf course or resort has direct web links for further reading and direct bookings. (See across). We hope you enjoy our new publication and all it has to offer.

Highways & Fairway Words: Andrew Marshall

oad trips in the States don’t come more quintessential than Los Angeles to Las Vegas via Death Valley.
All the classic imagery is in abundance; lone roadside motels, cloudless skies, diner breakfasts and highways stretching to infinity. And for serious golfers, this is a true place of pilgrimage. From Trump National Golf Course at $264 million, one of the most expensive golf courses ever built - to the world’s lowest level golf course and some of the best desert layouts on the planet - the quantity and variety of golf courses in California and Nevada is astonishing.
Cruising north along palm-fringed Pacific Highway 1, passing through Santa Monica, Malibu and Ventura en route to the picturesque beachside town of Santa Barbara, a good base for our first round at the Rancho San Marcos.
Set in a gorge in the Santa Ynez Mountains among century-old oaks on land where cattle once grazed the historic San Marcos Ranch, this heavily bunkered Robert Trent Jones Jr. course features

From previous page slick putting surfaces, blind tee shots and two contrasting nines, with hole names such as Eagle’s Nest, Stagecoach and Davy’s Stables that reflect the history of the ranch.
Our next round is at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa’s historic 1923 course, designed by master golf architect George C. Thomas, where old wooden bridges lead over gurgling brooks, and ancient oaks and sprawling pepper trees stand sentinel along the fairways and greens.
DESERT DRIVE The following day there's more golf to be played at the Pete Dye-designed Lost Canyons, widely regarded as one of the best public golf experiences in California, and featuring two distinctly different 18-hole, par-72 championship courses. With its majestic terrain, the Sky Course features holes that meander across rolling hills, along dramatic ridgelines and the floor of a hidden valley and the Shadow Course follows Dry Creek Canyon and affords breathtaking views of White Face Mountain. Leaving Lost Canyons behind, we head north to Mojave along roads flanked by distinctive Joshua trees. As we near Death Valley the names on our crumpled road map take on an ominous tone: Furnace Creek, Desolation Canyon and Starvation Point.
THE ROAD TO VEGAS Eventually, the pulsating neon signs and surreal skyline of the infamous Las Vegas Strip loom into view. Love it or loathe it, Vegas may be

From previous page artificial and completely over the top, but its also one of the world’s leading luxury resort destinations. Over the past ten years, the number of immaculately conditioned golf courses within a two-hour drive of the city has increased to more than 60 and many are top-flight tracks designed by some of the biggest names in golf including Nicklaus, Palmer, Dye and Fazio. The desert landscape has offered them an amazing canvas from which to create their works of art - swathes of emerald green fairways in a sea of red rock, such as Primm Valley, Paiute Golf Resort, Bear’s Best and Badlands.
We continue down Highway 15 towards the border town of Mesquite and the promise of 18 glorious holes at one of the most amazing golf courses on the planet Wolf Creek Golf Club. Set high above the desert floor among red-rock canyons, teeming waterfalls and glistening creeks, Wolf Creek looks as though strips of green velvet have been laid out on a lunar-landscape. As we prepare to hit our drives from the elevated tee block of the 17th hole, the sun casts long shadows across canyon walls, gullies and surreal dried-earth formations, which glow red, pink, and gold in the late afternoon light. Leaning on our drivers we take a moment to take in this memorable scene - one that provides a fitting finale to a classic golf journey.

The ‘end’ of Europe as we know it!
Y
ou’ve worked hard all year and feel you have earned a luxury break for yourself and your family, but don’t want to break the bank either? Well, if you’re looking for just the thing to tick that particular box, consider a trip to the beautiful and unspoilt Western Algarve – and Martinhal Beach Resort.
The area features some of the most beautiful beaches imaginable and a rugged, cliff-framed coastline that is distinctively Algarve in appearance. Famously, the iconic Cape St Vincent, with its landmark lighthouse perched imperiously atop the headland, is the most southwesterly point of the continent – the end of Europe, if you will! Martinhal Beach Resort and Hotel is situated overlooking Martinhal beach. This award winning resort is located in Sagres – only 1-hour from Faro Airport – which is a quaint little Algarvian town that has kept its authentic Portuguese feel. Pampering, outdoor pursuits, outstanding cuisine, plenty for the kids to do and a myriad of sporting activities... it’s all there at Martinhal. For more information see
