Florence and the Machine whirled onto the music scene in 2007, arms flung wide and lungs bellowing, putting stars into the eyes of music journos, surrounded by a storm of critical acclaim and thrilling the waiting crowds with a thumping beat and hauntingly powerful vocals. From jumping off stage mid-gig to dive into a swimming pool at SXSW to supporting MGMT on their European tour, then winning a Brit Award before even releasing an album – the last two years have been a whirlwind of rising success for Florence Welch and her Machine. With debut album Lungs set to hit the shops at the start of July and a summer of gigs ahead, we caught up with Florence at home in London, on one of her rare days off…
daily life… I don’t think I’d get recognised walking out of the house. But maybe that’s just something I’m telling myself, so that I don’t get freaked out.” The end of 2008 and early months of 2009 saw that frantic buzz of critics choice “Next Big Thing” attention heaped on the band, which Florence admits was a lot of pressure. She says, “When I won the Brit, it was weird, because I didn’t think I had anything to offer. But now the album’s done… and a lot of that Brit stuff has died down, I can feel like it was a nice thing now, rather than terrifying. To win an award before you’ve even done anything is quite strange. I really hope I’ve proved myself, and I’m excited because the album is out there now. It’s a fickle animal, this,” she says of the music industry, and fame. “I’m a real worrier. When the good things are happening, I’m always expecting bad stuff. I try not to read anything people write, because you don’t want to feed your ego, but you don’t want to drive yourself mad thinking about all the bad things that people could say to you. You just have to sort of concentrate on what it is you’re

I just sat down and recorded a drum track on one loose snare, and then the rest of it on a Yamaha keyboard, and that note that begins the track is the first note that came out of my mouth. I wrote Dog Days in the same fashion, with the sound of the drums and me banging my hand against the wall. The main instrument that I had was my voice – well, the main instrument that I was good at…” In true Florence style, she managed to bag James Ford on production duties (who has produced for Klaxons and The Last Shadow Puppets and is drummer for the latter) by running into his office without an appointment and playing him her songs.
She’s inspired to write songs by everything around her, from conversations to art installations to 80s pulp comic books. It’s easy to describe Florence and the Her current favourite track from Lungs is Machine (the Machine can be anything Cosmic Love. During the course of it.” The enjoyment that Florence gets from our interview, she leaps up to answer the performing is clear. Gerry Sims might seem like a fairly ordinary bloke at first – he wears baggy jeans and hoodies, likes surfing, skating and snowboarding, and his favourite film is Anchorman. But Gerry is no ordinary 25 year old. The Cornish lad has a special talent for close contact magic tricks, and has travelled the world, fascinating people with his seemingly impossible tricks. Everywhere he goes he leaves the crowds wondering and wanting more. Even though he has only been performing for four years, Gerry has already toured the States, is sponsored by skate/streetwear brand DCs and has performed in front of the likes of Annie Mac, Paolo Nutini and Armin Van Burren. 247 hooked up with Gerry to find out more…
sort of stuff I’m likely to get a lot of stick from people. I am normally doing it to pissed arseholes who want a fight. I get a lot of stick so I watch a lot of comedians for ad libbing inspiration.” Although the tricks might be the same old sleight of hand magic, Gerry doesn’t look like an old school magician – whenever he’s out performing, he’s dressed head to toe in all the latest gear from DCs. When performing tricks, Gerry uses anything he can get his hands on from the audience, even tricking them into giving him their watches. “I do card tricks, coins, rings, all sorts, it depends on who is there. If I can steal someone’s watch from them and make it into a trick, I’ll do it. I do all sorts of stuff. I don’t really know about a favourite trick, it all depends on the reaction I get from people. There are a few tricks that I do to some people and they freak out. The next person I do it to doesn’t react the same. People react so differently – you have to be aware of that.”
“If I can steal someone’s watch from them and make it into a trick, I’ll do it”
Gerry was first inspired to do magic by a girl who was staying at his dad’s backpackers in Newquay. He explains, “I got into magic because a girl showed me a magic trick at the Escape. I was completely gobsmacked, I was pestering her all week trying to find out how to do it. At the end of the week she showed me how it was done. Every time I met someone, I showed them the trick I had learnt.” Since then he has mastered thousands of tricks and become a member of the magician society. A working day for Gerry involves going round festivals, nightclubs and special events, entertaining the crowds. He also gets to go backstage and perform magic tricks to the stars, and the biggest highlights of his career so far include performing backstage at Wembley Stadium and in the VIP area at V festival for two years running. With a bit of comedy thrown in to amuse the crowds whilst he’s performing, Gerry keeps his audience captivated. He describes the crowds he draws when doing street magic as young and sometimes aggressive, so it is important that he entertains them. He said, “I watch a lot of stand up comics, because of the way I do my magic and the way I am dressed and that
During a recent two month tour in America, Gerry performed all over the US, from The Laughter Factory in Times Square, to Hollywood Boulevard, and the Winter Music Conference in Miami. “Americans react a lot differently to my tricks compared to people in the UK,” he said. “They start shouting and screaming and overreacting, which is good for me! In the UK people don’t like to show that they are impressed whereas in the US they are just over the top, its brilliant.” This summer, Gerry has a busy schedule of performing ahead of him. “I’m all over the place. Got the V festival and the Boardmasters here in Newquay in August. I don’t know where I am – all I know is that I’m everywhere!” Like magic… You can follow what Gerry is up to and see if he is performing near you at gerrysmagic.com magazine | 19

HENDRA MURAL The Hendra Mural Project was a project set up by John Mackenzie who works for Addaction and the group YZ-up to Drugs and Alcohol. With the aid of Penzance artist Mat McIvor and St. Ives artist Tom Suttcliffe, they held a number of workshops with a group of young people teaching them techniques in mural painting, spray can painting and character development. The workshops were held to develop ideas from the young people, with the intention of designing a large piece of art for a 40ft long wall in Hendra playpark in Truro. The youngsters aged between 16 - 21, worked for two months in the workshops to develop the final piece which focuses on the issues and problems which arise through drugs and alcohol. Over a period of six days, the mural was completed under the guidance of the artists with a mixture of masonary paint and spray paint

People In Planes Beyond The Horizon (Wind-Up)
Playing it safe for the most part, Cardiff quintet, People In Planes, may draw sonic comparisons with the likes of Pearl Jam and Muse but their debut album pales into insignificance when stood against ‘Vitalogy’ or ‘Absolution’. Still, the band do soaring, anthemic rock well enough (‘Mayday’ (M’Aidez)’) and aren’t averse to moments of notable inventiveness. I just wonder how many stadium-shaped bands we need before the metaphorical stadium itself collapses. Backbone
Tiny Masters Of Today Skeletons (Mute)
One part DFA, one part Go! Team, one part Sonic Youth, Brooklyn sibling duo, Tiny Masters…, are clearly having fun with their über-cool, lo-fi, funk-punk-party mash-up. Schoolgirl vocals over new wave guitars embellished by toy instruments and street beats is nothing new but when the band really are of school age (15 and 13) it’s far more justifiable and, crucially, likeable; lending the likes of ‘Two Dead Soldiers’ an eerily irreverent sheen. A mini-treat. Backbone
Kissy Sell Out Youth
(Marrakesh Records) The electro DJ/producer’s debut album is a mix of irresistible pop tunes that have been whizzed together through a synth and splattered with electro hooks by the irrepressibly cheery former art student and Radio 1 DJ. Songs explore memories from Kissy’s own experiences growing up in Essex – from snogging someone elses’ girlfriend to waking up in the garden covered in dew, and hanging out at cafes... With both bouncy vocal tracks and epic instrumentals (check out the saw edged synthy beats, driving bassline and zingy hooks on Harriet), this is a summery record that’ll have you running for the dance tent at every festival he plays at. LTB
The Mars Volta Octahedron (Mercury)
The Mars Volta lost my vote when they stopped playing gloriously self-indulgent, Zeppy spazzcore some time after the second album and delved too far into the underbelly of their damaged psyches. ‘Octahedron’ finds Omar’n’Cedric lost in ‘73, in contemplative mode, and it’s surprisingly affecting, even

Kasabian
West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (Easy Star Records)
I could listen to Kasabian for a lifetime and still not see the attraction. Sure, their penchant for ‘60s psyche-rock and Kinksian strum is a popular one, and sure, songs like the fabulous ‘Fast Fuse’ swagger with ill-intent. But, as retro bands go, they’re a triumph of style over content; too often relying on Serge Pizzorno’s default songwriting setting and opting for the lowest common denominator. A talented bunch, but thinking outside of the box is clearly not on the agenda. Backbone
Socialist Leisure Party Tactical POP! For Coffee Cadets EP (Shelflife Records)
Socialist Leisure Party deliver 8 slices of pure class, nicely packaged on vinyl & CD. Many of the songs are soul-driven and 60s-influenced, with plenty of light & shade, allowing the more upbeat sections of the songs to stand out. The real genius of Socialist Leisure Party lies in the songwriting. ‘Down With the Kids’ and ‘Head in the Hay’ show that the indie-pop sound can have anthemic qualities, without resorting to mainstream boredom. By the time you read this, the second single will already be out on Cloudberry Records. Can’t wait. Arash Torabi
Carpetface & Audible The Baboon Shampoo EP (Newbias Records)
Carpetface & Audible bring hip-hop back to the good stuff: humour, great lyrical flows and exceptional beat-boxing skills, to name just a few elements. They went down a treat recently supporting De La Soul in Exeter, they’ve got respect from DJ Format and Dub Pistols, and now the ultimate compliment: a big up from 247. This EP shows that UK hip-hop doesn’t have to be about the tired old doom, gloom and ‘rudeboy’ bollocks. And you can get it on vinyl. Arash Torabi

Nneka
No Longer At Ease (Yo Mama’s Recording) For those of you not as obsessive as me you might not know the name Nneka but she has bubbling for a while now, always showing promise but not delivering a hit. Things haven’t changed much, there’s not anything on hear I could hear rocking Radio 1, what there is though is an amazing talent, that given some time could be as big as Lauryn Hill. Though it would be lazy of me just to label her as such the similarities are all there, hip hop flavours with great melodies. One warning though, it’s a sunny album, don’t try and get into it when it rains. Aldo Vanucci
High Contrast
High Contrast Confidential (Hospital Records)
This is High Contrast at his finest, with two discs full of flawless music, from his debut in 2001 to present day. The first CD holds hit after hit that could rock any dance floor as well as being a good listen in the car or at home. CD 2 showcases remixes of some of his own anthems as well as credible artists like Missy Elliot, London Electricity, The Streets, Adele, Eric Prydz, Omnio Trio and more. This record showcases the raw talent of High Contrast and boasts the artists he has been privileged to remix. You don’t have to be into drum and bass to get something out of this album. UK Rocka (Infidelity DnB)
Daniel Merriweather Love & War (J Records/Sony Music)
Following on from his work on Mark Ronson’s hit “Stop Me” back in 2007, the spotlight now shines firmly on Merriweather as he finally delivers his own solo album project with Ronson taking care of production duties on the entire album. Merriweather cites Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jeff Buckley and Herbie Hancock as major influences and his album reflects that with its retro old soul feel. Besides hits Change and Red, other tracks that stand out are album opener For Your Money and Could You which samples the classic California Dreamin by The Mamas and The Papas. The boy done good! Lekan Latinwo
DEMOS DEMO OF THE MONTH Plymouth duo, THE OLD SIGNS, have outdone themselves on album number two ‘Songs From The Garden Shed’. Merging post-modernism with nostalgia, social documentary with surrealist comedy, it’s another utterly bizarre snapshot of what goes on in the minds of Nev’n’Jus – essentially, Chas’n’Dave if they were OAPs with an endearingly unhinged bent. Steam trains, Victorian chocolate bars, cheeky postcards and garden sheds all get the Old Signs’ music-hall treatment while ‘Allotment Song’ advises that “If you are feeling down / No need to wear a frown / Go out and get yourself an allotment”. For a trip down a particularly esoteric memory lane laced with a knowing sense of irony, nobody does it better. myspace.com/theoldsigns
ROCK SHOW DEMO OF THE MONTH We on the Rock Show have been closely watching the ongoings of ENGRAVED DISILLUSION for a while now and when they sent us the new “Desolate EP” there was only one thing we could do and make it our record of the month. This Wellington five piece draw influence from acts as diverse as Sabbath and Killswitch and are currently working their way through the rounds of Surface Unsigned Festival 2009. If you get to see this band live this summer you’re in for a treat. myspace.com/engraveddisillusion
They’re from Truro but what does BHODAZAFFA mean? No doubt it’s a portmanteau pertaining to some private in-joke or maybe it’s to ensure websearch exclusivity. Whatever the reason, it’s certainly a far more colourful moniker than the music on this EP deserves: overwrought Mother Love Bone-tinged metal with predictably funky, Chili Pepper-esque moments and a singer who will never understand the power of subtlety due, one assumes, to his inability to listen to anything that is more than the sum of its parts. As for the ‘iconic’ band shot on the sleeve – black nail varnish, self-absorbed posing – well, it’s all a bit ridiculous, isn’t it? Still, have love will travel. There’s always someone listening. myspace.com/bhodazaffa
Devon duo, THE WEAVER TWINS, have hit on a neat formula with ‘Fayre’. Released through Cow Records, it’s a ramshackle ride of acoustic guitars, rootsy mannerisms and heightened vocal involvement; hard to pin down but easy to digest. ‘Digit’ crosses over into Nirvana Unplugged territory, with a refrain straight from the Cobain canon. But the band aren’t content to play things straight. They utilise programmed beats and samples to good effect, summoning up the digi-blues stylings of Beck and beyond. Meanwhile, the cutely titled ‘Black Dues’ introduces analogue keyboards and Britpop mores to land somewhere between Blur and Money Mark. Clever stuff. myspace.com/theweavertwins
Email your tracks to rockshow@phonic.fm or post them to Rock Show on Phonic106.8FM, 6 Belvedere Court, St Davids, Exeter, Devon, EX4 4DA Hear these demos on the Rock Show on Phonic FM 106.8FM in Exeter or online at phonic.fm, every Friday from 10pm – 12am with Mike JamesMike James & Crew. South Devon heavy rockers, MORPH, seem to think that ‘ticking all the right boxes’ is a positive thing. What it amounts to here is a band totally crushed under an avalanche of rock’n’roll cliché and derivation. The band boast of flamboyant guitar work but all I hear are tired old solos and lumpen Maiden riffs devoid of newness or passion. Even when bands create a parody of this kind of histrionic rock they sound more believable. And, apparently, Simon Cowell thinks vocalist Mark Pascall has ‘the voice’. I think that anyone who is willing to use a Cowell quote to augment their portfolio is clearly insane. On the plus side, they’re very competent musicians. Then again, so are Nickelback. morphrock.co.uk
Pop Noise Records continue in their quest to champion the indie underdog with this EP by East Devon’s FAT BATTERY. The first song, ‘Rock Of Sand’, takes a bit of getting used to as singer/songwriter, Rich Austin’s slightly flat, baritone croon with warbly inflections combine to make him sound a little deranged. But once accustomed to his unique idiosyncrasies, the quasi-country, lo-fi meanderings make perfect sense. The wonderfully constructed ‘Cactus For Fingers’ is the pick of the bunch, operating somewhere between Tindersticks and Elvis Costello, with a sense of melodic invention that is both untypical and infectious. I look forward to hearing a full length, if it’s on the cards. fatbattery.co.uk
Meanwhile, over on Murdoch-Space…
Westcountry troubadour, DARREN FISHER, refers to ‘On A Roll’ as a ‘summer’ single, blatantly trying to cash in on the surf smurfs who love their acoustic tunes wistful, groovy and slightly self-satisfied. His voice is hardly Paolo Nutini but I guess it’s harmless enough, whatever that means. darrenfisher.co.uk/pressrelease.cfm Based in Cornwall, Fierce Business Records label owner DAN WILDE‘s mini-album, ‘Funk Break Format’, is a riot of funkoid floorstompers and multi-sampled black coolness, although you’ve heard it a million times before. All the songs are streamed on his Myspace so go have a listen and, if you’re in the mood, a nice little frug. myspace.com/danwilde1 Newton Abbot’s CHASING FACES are clearly looking to transcend small-town aspirations with wide-screen, indie-rock soundscapes that sit just on the right side of drive-time radio. And their stated desire to sit at the Tears For Fears / Explosions In The Sky interface is a commendable one. myspace.com/chasingfaces Exeter’s cabaret-punks THE ADVENTURES OF... proffer a heady mix of new wave guitars and lounge sleaze, like World/Inferno Friendship Society with grittier fingernails and Muse-y falsetto frolics. ‘Renegade’ is particularly bloody awesome. Worth a listen. myspace.com/wearetheadventuresof North Devon acoustic crooner, SAM DOWDEN, picks up the Newton Faulkner baton, layering vocal harmonies and summery strums to predictably winsome yet decent enough effect. A full album and summer tour are imminent via Generator Promotions. myspace.com/samdowdenx

Don’t miss this premiere performance of Electric Picnic’s brand spanking new comedy caper! After a plethora of media appearances and a world tour supporting her stand-up comedy cocktail of acerbic cut-throat wit and wildly accurate observations, Jo’s comedy is nevertheless uplifting, familiar and comforting.

WANDERLUST Plymouth Arts Centre, 38 Looe Street, Plymouth, 01752 206114, plymouthartscentre.org, Wanderlust is a solo exhibition of new work by Tim Knowles, exploring the concepts of endeavour and challenge. The artist’s creative practice incorporates chance operations and performance. For his Windwalks and Nightwalks Tim Knowles acts as a contemporary flaneur, moving about the city and countryside via an unusual self-imposed set of rules. Akin to scientific experimentation, the results of the project are unpredictable and outside his control. For all its verve, there is something unnervingly lonely about Tim Knowles’ work.

01736 363330, regalfilmcentre.co.uk 12 – 15 Jul: Royal, St Ives, 01736 796843, regalfilmcentre.co.uk Dir: Laurent Cantet, starring François Bégaudeau France/2008/130 mins Based on the best-selling novel ‘Between the Walls’ by former teacher Francois Begaudeau, this real life portrayal reveals the tensions and issues within a multi-cultural French classroom. The film centres around Begaudeau’s extravagant and confrontational teaching methods and how they are challenged by his pupils in a tough Paris school. Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2008. Gran Torino (15) 8 Jul: Exeter Phoenix, 01392 667080, exeterphoenix.org.uk Dir: Clint Eastwood, starring Clint Eastwood, Christopher Carley and Bee Vang 2008/US/116 mins Clint Eastwood goes all Dirty Harry as Walt Kowalski a grumpy, toughminded, unhappy an old man, who can’t get along with either his kids or his neighbours. He is a Korean War veteran whose prize possession is a 1972 Gran Torino motor-vehicle which he keeps in mint condition. When his neighbor Thao, a teenager under pressure from his gang member cousin, tries to steal his Gran Torino, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. Drawn against his will into the life of Thao’s family, Kowalski is soon taking steps to protect them from the gangs that infest their neighbourhood. Definitely worth a watch. Does the play-acting finish with the exercise or is she beginning to assume the deceased girl’s identity? There’s an eerie air of unreality in this unsettling film where nothing is quite what it seems, an atmosphere underlined by beautifully cinematography and an excellent non-professional cast. Words: John Barker
2008/Italy/ 117 mins This magnificent and loopy depiction of post-war Italian politics traces Guilio Andreotti’s years in power. Andreotti was prime minister seven times from the 70s to the 90s: the film examines how he maintained his power base while being accused of alleged ties to the mafia. With a wonderfully grotesque (though subtle) lead performance by Toni Servillo, driving rock score, non-linear narrative, and swooping camerawork this fabulous epic will leave you gasping. Imagine two periods of Martin Scorsese’s career overlapping (both the early energy of Mean Streets with the visually operatic qualities of Casino) and you are in the right ballpark. A word of advice: enjoy this flow and bravura of this movie while not worrying too much if you are a bit lost. Red Cliff (15)
17– 23 Jul: The Poly,
Falmouth, 01326 212 300, thepoly.org Dir: John Woo Starring: Tony Leung Chui Wai and Takeshi Kaneshiro China/2008/ 147mins Red Cliff is John Woo’s triumphantly over-the-top return to Chinese film after 16 years in Hollywood and is the
films most popular film ever at the Asian box office. In 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd Prime Minster Cao convinced the fickle Emperor Han the only way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms of Xu in the West and East and Wu in the South. Thus began a military campaign of unprecedented scale, eventually culminating in the battle of Red Cliff. This is a definite return to form for the director and with plenty of rampant action and swordplay this could provide a welcome distraction to high end Hollywood productions that will dominate the screens over the coming months.

Dir: Michael Mann, starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Billy Crudup. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone, from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard), to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. Expect spectacular shoot-outs and stand-out performances from Depp and Bale.

LIVE Not only are THE DHARMA BUMS back on the show trail, they’ve completely reworked their idiosyncrasies, introducing electric guitar to evoke memories of Dylan’s infamous transformation but on a smaller scale (Voodoo Lounge, Plymouth, 22 May). The band’s newly embraced postpunk dynamics seemed a little shoe-horned in, but things soon settled into a competent reworking of their former, Bright Eyes-esque selves. Exeter punk rock all-dayers are the stuff of legend (Phoenix, 30 May). This year’s jamboree, organised by No Stars No Stripes, saw local heroes, THE COMPUTERS, looking a little out of sorts; probably because the band’s ragbag of hardcore and rock’n’roll is a too scuzzy for the Phoenix, but the songs didn’t suffer. A triptych of American bands rounded off the day, starting with Boston’s DEFEATER, who sprinkled elements of Modern Life Is War over their crunching rock. Like a lot of modern bands, Baltimore’s RUINER have clearly been bench-pressing old Black Flag records but they do it incredibly well. Which left Syracuse buzzband of the moment, POLAR BEAR CLUB, to buck the trend with a clutch of unabashed and intelligent rock songs that are as rooted in pop as much as they are the underground. We played twice this month with Florida punks, NEW BRUISES, and, I must confess, it was comforting to see a bunch of kindred old swingers making a new racket (Exeter Cavern, 2 June). They may not exactly be chopping through undiscovered forest but they did at least play the tried and tested shouty melodic punk shtick with passion and self-deprecation. So, when did THE OUTCRY COLLECTIVE get so dapper? Frilly shirts, surf-bum barnets, bootcut jeans… you’d be forgiven for thinking that you were watching Reef in their heyday. Thankfully, the music didn’t follow suit. Raging rock punk with a tungsten-tough vocal that, for once, doesn’t pray at the altar of The Bronx. New York neo-rockers, WARSHIP, pride themselves on their duel drum-kit powerhouse and it works brilliantly as a thunderous climax (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 3 June). But when ex-From Autumn To Ashes singer, Francis Mark, throws a Thomas tantrum because his guitar wouldn’t work properly, it reduced the band to the level of amateur in one fell swoop. Shame. Openers, Worcester’s FIGHTS AND FIRES, suffered no such setbacks, proffering riffy post-hardcore with singer, Philip Cox, frolicking around front of stage like Benny Hill in a grunge wig. Me and the Crazy Arm boys went off on tour again this month. First stop Bridgend: suicide capital of the UK, no less (Hobos, 6 June). Stereotypical jokes aside, Portugal’s REJECTS UNITED made a fair fist of indie-punk but didn’t have the vocal acuity to truly shine; while hometown lads, A NEW DAY, may like to think they’re ploughing the same field as Strike Anywhere but they lacked the righteous rage and worldly focus to make any lasting difference. Over in Portsmouth, amiable Austrian punks, ASTPAI, had their guitar levels set so low that it was hard to pass judgment on the fullness of their sound (Fawcett, 7 June). ATTACK! VIPERS!, on the other hand, were on fire: developed hardcore motifs with a bark that could grate cheese.

More Austrian punks; this time, the politically-charged RENTOKILL (Farmhouse, Canterbury, 9 June). Despite playing tight and hard, there’s something not quite right about them. It may have something to do with derivative riffola, Schwarzenegger accents and the singer’s slightly camp stage persona, but they’re the kind of band that you could probably never fall in love with no matter how much you support their philosophy. London’s PJ AND GABY were a breath of fresh air: cute, folksy punk-pop tunes with childlike keyboard hooks, conscientious lyrics and a disarming humility; while SEVEN DAY CONSPIRACY played a handful of new songs ranging from calypso to hardcore that, for the most part, were over before they started.

We had a day off so descended upon Brighton to see our buddies, FALL OF EFRAFA, whose dense carriages of hardcore-inspired post-rock were time-stretched to the point of almost stillness. Quite remarkable in places yet a touch unambitious in others (Hobgoblin, 8 June). Still, you can’t knock their poetically veganarchist stance. Well, you can but I may have to fight you. Elsewhere, ME AND GOLIATH juggled pinball rhythms with messy hardcore; THE PLAGUE SERMON took progressive screamocore to the edge only to spoil it by having a singer who clearly spends most of his time hanging around inside his own bowels; leaving Tennessee’s DOLCIM to go straight for the jugular with a snarling aural assault that left me physically exhausted. In a good way, mind.
We’re only half-way through our tour, as I write, so we’ll pick up next month in a ‘to-be-continued’ kind of way. How exciting. See-ya bye.
