News Feed LOOE MUSIC FESTIVAL After last years sell out event, the line up has been confirmed for this years festival taking place on 27-29 September. Based on the beach in the heart of Looe, Dizraeli and the Small Gods headline the Friday night, Reef and Seth Lakeman headline the Saturday night and The Darkness finish things off on Sunday night. Other acts appearing on the main stage include The Damned, Sham 69, Empire of Fools, Jay Tamkin and Simon Townsend amongst others. There are three other stages and over 50 bands playing including Chas and Dave, Ruarri Joseph, Funky Acoustica, Secret Affair, Land of Giants and many more. OUTDOOR FILM SEASON If the weather behaves itself, it’s time well spent enjoying a summer evening watching a film on an outdoor screen. FINAL CALL FOR BOARDMASTERS Cornwall’s biggest music festival of the year is rapidly approaching, 17,500 people will take over the Watergate Bay site to see the likes of Ben Howard, The Vaccines and Basement Jaxx headlining over three days from 9-11 August. Down at Fistral Beach in the daytime, the action is in the water as the surfers do battle in the waves, skaters and BMXer’s show off their tricks on the ramps and the beach bar hosts more intimate musical performances on Weds and Thurs night. NEW BRISTOL FESTIVAL LAUNCHED CALLING ALL BRIGHT SPARKS The 2013 Ignite business plan competition, managed by Oxford Innovation, is on the hunt to find the best entrepreneurial talent that Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has to offer and is open to anyone with a bright idea and planning to start a business in Cornwall, or who has done so in the last 12 months. Ignite offers competitors the chance to win a share of a support package worth over £100,000. Plymouth The British Firework Championships return to Plymouth this summer with a repeat of last year’s Champion of Champions event. After the British Summer got the best of last year’s event, causing some of the displays to be curtailed on the second night, the organisers decided to invite all the competitors to come back again in 2013 – get ready for two nights of spectacular displays over Plymouth Sound. Best place to watch is either by the Citadel, along Madeira Rd or on the Hoe where there is the fun fair and Heart FM music stage.
16-18 AUGUST FLAVOUR FOOD FEST Plymouth The event is the South West’s largest food and drinks festival and has two new high profile celebrity chefs Michael Caines and Anton Piotrowski, winner of Masterchef Professional 2012 holding master cookery demonstrations in the kitchen theatre during the 10th anniversary celebrations. Now comes a two day punk and pasty festival in the Cornish countryside, set in the grounds of a once-stately home, with some of the biggest names on the UK punk circuit. You’re playing the Electric Beach Festival in Newquay, how often have you played in the Southwest and what’s it been like? I have played in the Southwest quite a bit, wherever I play has it’s own energy and the Southwest has a very different one. Growing up in east London it was very inspirational to see a working class Londoner blow up internationally, who inspired you when you were growing up? My brothers and the rest of my family, I grew up in a very music home, everyone listening to different music. What kind of songs were being played around the house? Well I was always a big Ziggy Stardust fan, you’d hear Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, King Tubby, Calypso Music, it was the 70’s which was a very interesting time musically as well as politically, there was a lot of social change going on.
247’s Aldo Vanucci chats to Soul II Soul What can people expect from your Dj set in Newquay, are you playing to people who grew up with your music or trying to win over the younger generation? And do you use digital, cds or vinyl? I’m a soundman so don’t even try to test me, my set up is mainly digital, lot’s of specials and I will take them on a musical journey. I have a £20 limit on buying records which I have only broken once or twice, one of them an early George Benson jazz LP which I’d been after for twenty years, what’s your most expensive record you’ve ever bought? £300. Jesus, what record was that? Next question..

When Soul II Soul broke big in America it was the first time British soul was in that position again since Loose Ends, was there ever any negative feedback because you were British? That’s an interesting question, I think at first that weren’t sure who or what we were, I wouldn’t say there was any negativity. We had to break the black music market first, which was seen as a kind of stepchild to the main label, but once we started selling units they weren’t concerned with who we were. The media were very interested in us because we were selling coals to Newcastle, taken the American soul thing and putting our own identity on it. We also can’t take for granted the timing of it either. I’ve always felt that Britain does dance music well due to our close connection to Jamaica and their soundsystem idea which came to England very quickly, add to that the British reserve that gets lost after a few beers or some e’s, that combination has done well for us, America is only just catching up to that now. Back in the day there was a lot of stigma attached to culture from the colonies, whether it’s Caribbean or Jamaican or wherever but we were connected and proud of our roots so were carving our way not just mimicking the Americans and like I said the technology was changing to make all that possible.
Long before Jay Z and Roc a Fella you were doing music, clothing, the label, isn’t Soul 2 Streets promotions one of yours as well, do you think being a good businessman is vital to succeed in the music industry? Yeah Soul 2 Streets is mine, nowadays with digital it’s about distribution and social networking so more than it’s ever been. We used to bring our wares to the people but now anyone online can contact you and build a relationship with you. I wouldn’t say I was a businessman it was just a way of life, an extension from the soundsystem days. Nowadays the artist brings out a record then comes the perfume and all the merchandise, it wasn’t like that in the analog era. Also being a working class person you bring a different take on it.
Today’s music seems so much more homogenised than ever, I belive in cycles in music and at some point it will move away from all this polished pop music, if soul II soul started out today how different do you feel it would be? Well you said it about fairplay, it’s about timing, timing was everything, you try and make music that is timeless but it’s usually about depicting a certain time.
What has been your worst gig ever? There’s not been any one gig really, every gig is it’s own experience, that the soundman philosophy. I’ve done both sides of that, putting on my own gigs, when you are the promoter it can be hard if there’s 10 people there but whether you are playing to 20 or 20,000 you have to get up there and do your thing and do the best you can. Sometime’s you might learn something to do for next time or you may have forgot a certain record but you still have to do the best you can. Remix, sign or drop Justin Bieber, Childish Gambino and Wiley Well Justin I like your voice but you spit at your fans so I’m gonna have to say goodbye, Wiley definitely sign, let’s get another album out of you so that leaves Childish Gambino to remix.
If you had to go on Come Dine With Me what would you make and which three people alive or dead would you want there? I’d do some baked fish, with seasoned rice and vegtables, whichever season was in, with some Bami, and a long cocktail, cranberry juice, ginger ale with a twist of lime in a tall glass. Merchandise Become What You Are Since their inception in late 2008, Tampa post-punk band Merchandise have been pushing a DIY ethos across the board. After the storage unit gigs that gave them their local fanbase; there have been tiny runs of self-released albums, bedroom label releases, online mix tapes, and some highly sought-after cassettes (all of which are posted for free on the band’s website. “If people are going to download it anyway, they may as well get the version that we think sounds the best”). With 2012’s Children of Desire and this year’s Totale Nite EP, Pitchfork, NME and mainland Europe have begun to prick up their ears. Matt Crane speaks to scarily prolific guitarist Dave Vassalotti on the eve of their inaugural full European tour. How is it now that you‘re getting international recognition? It’s great. We’re glad to be coming over to Europe. It’s a place we’ve always looked to for inspiration, so it’s awesome to be able to actually do our thing over here. We definitely have a stronger reception over in Europe, be it critically, or just people coming to our shows. There’s a lot of post-punk in your sound – The Smiths, The Chameleons and Joy Division? All bands we love. We did a session for the BBC recently, and it was amazing. A real honour to be in the studio where all those classic Peel sessions were recorded, using the same microphones. You could sort of feel all the ghosts around you.
Oh yeah. We actually just recorded a new Church Whip 7” a few days ago, so the list continues. I’ve got a new solo LP written too, but I just haven’t had the time to record it. I certainly get something very different out of playing (drums) in Church Whip than I do playing in Merchandise. A metal itch being scratched. Merchandise play the Globe in Cardiff on 27th August and The Fleece in Bristol on 2nd September as part of the European tour, as well the Reading and Leeds festivals. Is there some sort of timescale for the next record? We’re demoing a few things right now, but we start actually recording it this winter, once we’re done touring (for a little while at least). We’re trying to write shorter songs as I kind of feel that all of our songs are so long, so the next record should have some slightly more manageable short tracks - five minutes rather than ten, maybe. And it will be a full-length record rather than another EP. How’s the transition been to playing with a live drummer after so many years? It’s been amazing. The only recorded stuff we’ve got with him (Elsner Nino) is the BBC session, but we’ve been with him since February. He moved down from NYC, and less than a week later, we hit the road. He used to book shows for our old punk bands whenever we’d come up to New York, so we’d known him for all these years, he’s always been a fan since the early stuff. When we asked him whether he wanted to be in the band, he said yes. Put everything on hold, and just dove right in. He’s making the band a million times better. How was South by South West (legendary hectic Texan music festival)? SXSW was more fun than I expected it to be. I was not looking forward to it, as it is a total mess – a total nightmare if you’re in a band playing a ton of shows, but for us it all worked out surprisingly. We did nine shows in four days. It was pretty brutal. You yourself have been quite busy this year as well – a new solo EP, and the Church Whip album, which was quite a substantial departure from the other material?

247’s Emma Henderson chats to up and coming singer-songwriter, 17 year old Jessica McEvoy about her music, gigs, festivals and living in Cornwall 17 year old college student, Jessica only realised she could sing a mere two years ago. After singing in school choirs for a few years, she finally took the plunge to take her early starting career seriously. From the tender age of 14, she had been covering her favourite songs and after her first major gig -Katie Tunstall at the famous Eden Sessions in 2008 - she then decided to experiment and discover her own style. Describing her own sound as ‘very acoustic with a folky kind of vibe’ rings very true. Jessica doesn’t let her age get in the way of her career and assures people take her seriously despite still firmly being in her teens. Although, she does have to rely on someone to drive her to her gigs. Growing up, Jessica was surrounded by live music, listening to bands in pubs and at weddings. ‘My music taste can vary depending on my mood, but I like folk music and tend to stay away from heavier music’. Currently, she is listening to Passenger, Daughter, Fleet Foxes, Emma Stevens, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Sam Williams and Flock of Bats. The natural progression from covering songs for Jessica was to write her own. After being inspired by too many artists to mention, her mum and dad have been heavily influential. ‘My mum has always been musical, and gave me a Spice Girls CD when I was about 6, for ages it was the only one I had to play on my tiny little purple stereo and I adored it.’ Her dad has always been supportive of her music, and she is so happy to have her parents rooting for her. ‘They inspire me to do my best and I would still be singing in my bedroom if it weren’t for them, I certainly wouldn’t be being interviewed for 247 magazine!’ Receiving her first guitar for Christmas in 2009, Jessica taught herself guitar, after first realising she was trying to read a tab for left handed player! She now owns three guitars, her favourite being her newest which is a Martin, as its ‘a really beautiful natural wood colour and I’m in love with the way it sounds.’ Although Jessica remembers being really jealous of Katie
Tunstall’s silver glittery guitar, and would still love one now! Jessica is super excited by the incredible line up of Leopallooza festival, and wouldn’t miss it for the world. It’s one of her favourite festivals of the season and is very grateful that she is part of the bill. She is also ridiculously thrilled about supporting Emma Stevens on her UK tour in August. After recently singing on the iconic St Michaels Mount in the beautiful sunshine, Jessica has dubbed it her favourite Cornish venue. Outside of Cornwall, Jessica sang at the opening of the Cheddar Experiment in Somerset for Stringer Bessant where a laid back Cornish atmosphere reigned. ‘Cornwall as a place is very artistic, and there are so many venues for gigs which is great. The Eden Sessions are amazing; I wish I was going to more of them this summer’. Jessica thinks the local Cornish music scene is full of camaraderie amongst a lot of the musicians in Cornwall. ‘There are some really hardworking promoters helping us to get our music in front of an audience; being surrounded by so much talent really encourages me to keep doing what I’m doing.’ When I asked Jessica what advice she would give to any inspiring singer songwriters, she claimed she has ‘still a lot to learn herself’, but her main advice to budding artists would be ‘to keep on writing, even if your first idea doesn’t turn out the way you want it to, keep working and be patient’. Her brave and confident attitude also encourages her to share her songs, even when they aren’t quite finished. Even though Jessica is still really busy with college work, and amazingly still manages to constantly gig and write her own beautiful songs, she also horse rides, goes to local gigs, hangs out at the beach like every Cornish girl does and even writes. We travelled to St Ives for this months review for a feast of shameless gluttony in a beautiful seaside town. Upon arriving, we were instantly greeted by friendly staff, and were offered drinks at the bar before being shown to our table. The extensive drinks menu offers a large choice of soft drinks, wines, cocktails, craft beers and best of all alcoholic “Hard Shakes”. The menu was large and comprehensive, encompassing everything an American food lover would look for in its breakfasts, burgers and BBQ food, as well as less conventional seafood options, all complimented by the restaurant’s unobstructed view of the picturesque harbour. The choice of food was made harder by the prices, all under £12, and our knowledgeable waiter tempted us to start with the pulled pork nachos, piled with salsa, guac and sour cream, and chilli fries with cheese which were some of the tastiest I have ever eaten! The main courses were served in true American style, very generous portions, burgers stacked high, hotdogs a masterpiece of sauce squirting and ribs so well marinated I ended up with sauce on my legs. All served with delicious, unprocessed fries and with an extra side of onion rings beautifully battered without a hint of sogginess. We left so satisfied the food babies in our bellies were crying out for more but didn’t even have room for dessert, despite them looking amazing and being highly recommended by the table next to us.
You simply don’t get more American in Somerset than when visiting Route 303. Inside is pretty much exactly what you’d get at a cool diner in the States – enough music memorabilia to sink a ship (and keep you entertained until you food arrives) and a menu that couldn’t get more American other than if it sang The StarSpangled Banner. I knew from experience that the portions at Route 303 are huge, so skipped a starter although the foot of onion rings with BBQ, salsa and salad cream dip were calling out to me. The menu has pretty much every kind of burger, grill or meat feat you could wish for, as well as Mexican dishes, fish or salads if you’re feeling healthy. I went for the full rack of ribs, mothered in hickory BBQ sauce (£10.95) – the ribs were meaty and succulent and delightfully messy and the sauce was spot on too. It came served with a half corn, pot of coleslaw and wedges, which made it into a mammoth size meal that although delicious, indulgent and moreish I couldn’t quite finish. If that sounds like nothing to you, you might like ‘The Coral’ – a meal of over 21lb of meat…I did say it was a true American experience! The dessert menu is pretty immense too – I had a tasty fruit salad with mango sorbet, which was deliciously refreshing. Chocolate fudge Sunday next time! Service was brilliant and with a smile and the diner is fully licensed. Recommended.
If like me you have ever found yourself salivating over the mouthwatering food on Man vs food then JD grill is somewhere you just have to visit. Situated at the bottom of town in Plymouth the first floor restaurant has a distinctive American theme with comfy booth style seating and all the food is locally sourced including the high quality west country beef. We spent at least 10 minutes staring in awe at the extensive menu of gormet burgers, dogs, ribs and steaks (including the special 'Tomohawk' - a 40oz local west country rib cut steak). After much deliberation we decided upon the best selling burger "Hoofs and Trotters' - a 1/2lb burger topped with pulled pork and melted Swiss cheese and a 'Dawg house' - a stacked high burger with hot dogs!! The generous, well presented portions meant we could only squeeze in one pudding between the two of use. We tried the Homemade 'Rocky road cheesecake' - omg, literally a desert that could create world peace!

Live At Bestival 2012 Sunday Best “Hello! Guess who we are? We are New Order, obviously.” Well, Barney’s right. Almost. It’s the new line up playing a set of favourites (Blue Monday, Regret, True Faith) and a few Joy Division songs, as you‘d expect. The big elephant in the room- or NOT in the room- is the exclusion of larger-thanlife and iconic bass-player, Hooky. But you really wouldn’t know it from listening to this live set. His replacement mimics his parts with robotic precision, using his trademark high-end/semi-distorted bass sound. And he’s turned right up in the mix, as if the band are saying “F*** you!”. Great performance, full of beans and it’s all for cheridee.
Arts & Leisure Choose Your Adventure Test Pattern
This faultless debut from the Californian femalefronted guitar pop quartet is indeed an adventure. Formed out of the ashes of Baby Grand, the band take influences from the ‘60s, power pop and new wave, fusing it with their own style and displaying excellent songwriting, quirky guitar lines and fantastic harmonies. Recent single Wolf Pack is fast and melodic, and songs such as Upside Down and The River show their more gentle side. It’s a big sound that they create, without the need to complicate things: it‘s kept simple and direct. And the clear and warm production brings out the best in a band that play with energy and diversity. People need to find out about this band, and quickly.
Grey Reverend A Hero’s Lie Motion Audio
Released through Cinematic Orchestra’s label, the Brooklyn-based singer’s second album finds him once again in fine form, delivering acoustic-based songs with his rich vocal tones, and accompanied mainly by acoustic guitar. Subtle use of strings also colour a few tracks. He creates a warm and atmospheric sound with subtleties, so the man is clearly not in the business of exploiting folk for commercial gain, nor is he doing it to be trendy. This is heart & soul stuff. If you love Nick Drake or more recent artists like Fionn Regan, the Rev is your man. The album includes the current single Ever Lasting, which also comes as a four-song EP, with three non-album tracks.
Mantles
Long Enough To Leave Slumberland San Francisco’s retro-loving indie-poppers, Mantles link up with Slumberland Records (the USA home of Veronica Falls, the makers of one of my favourite albums this year) for this, their second album. Although styles like psychedelic and garage are branded about in the press release, what I’m hearing here is more along the lines of the British ‘80s underground, such as The Jasmine Minks (who were influenced by the previously mentioned styles any way). Nothing wrong with that! Did you check out the Scared to Get Happy box set? Well do it! And buy this album as well. There, I’ve done it: I’ve used brut force to make a point. But you’ll thank me for it one day.

Chapter One Mr Bongo records Mr Bongo continues to unearth some amazing gems of world music. I've never heard of these guys but Madlib sampled them and they rock with funk like a mofo. Eight tracks of pure african rock from 1973 which didn't sell so well originally but with time became a massive collectable item, much like my own album... There is so much music to discover nowadays of all genres, but for me lost gems like this album have a special place, these guys later went on to make more funk based music as that is what was selling at the time and after listening to this it seems unbelieveable that this wasn't massive at the time of release. If you like discovering something different and like your world music I strongly suggest you check this.
Tony Touch The Peacemaker 3 Red River
Tony Touch was a breakdancer, then became a hip hop / reggaeton dj and producer, with, going by the calibre of names on this mixtape some serious clout. It takes some pull to get to the likes of Eminem, Busta, Jadakiss and producers like Rza and Just Blaze and for these days of kids with short attention spans this album is spot on, 50 mc's and most of them pretty A list, with quality beats and verses. Nore comes with " I tried to reach Nas, I ain't want his number, I just wanna see the n**, like Stevie Wonder", made me smile that one. This album won't bring hip hop back to new york but it will satisfy those who have a hankering for the 90's boom bap. I got sent mp3's but this is on my cd to buy list.
U God
The Keynote Speaker Soul Temple After all these years the Wu is still going strong with these solo albums and the bonus disc with this album will have a full Wu track on it, obviously without Odb. U God was never one of my favourite Wu members but like a drop of water after a walk through the desert after hearing so much modern hip hop, a taste of golden ear new york hip hop is so nice to hear. This album features Gza, Meth as well as Styles P and Kool Keith. The beats aren't quite as hot as the Tony Touch or recent Adrian Younge outings but they are punchy with nice soul flavoured loops. For those Wu disciples you'll no doubt be buying this anyway for those need converting maybe wait for the next full line up album or check the Ghostface / Adrian Younge collabo's.

The last volume of this series was quite an ear opener for me, I don't hear much UK rap nowadays, not like I used to, with so many grime stars moving over into the pop charts and american rappers leaving alot of kids cold, maybe there is a gap in the market and peoples hearts for a resurgence in uk rap. There are some recogniseable names like Sneakbo and Scorcher along with lesser known ones. This is a great album, diverse in style but most tracks seem to bang well and have some brilliant flows, the odd dodgy track but with a double album that's always going to be the case. If you like your beats non sampled and your rhymes earthy and stark then this album is so for you, if you think you might like some rap with your own accent then you should start with this one.

Steam Train Symmetry Records The suspense on the intro takes you back to some old “Bad Company” style Drum & Bass. The drums are so punchy that Break defiantly separates his tracks from there’s..... Then out of no were a few bars after the drop a signature ripping bass tone that drives the track to its peak! The delivery of Break’s bass always gets the hairs stood up on my neck but you can’t tell in his production he is still really pushing it and bringing greats tracks like this one to the table. Favourite in the clubs as the DJ support is huge from the like of HYPE, ANDY, FRICTION, SIGMA & loads more. Instant reload material
Nymfo
Suddenly VIP Commercial Suicide Can’t get enough of this VIP by Nymfo certainly a DJ friendly tool and featured on the latest fabric live mix cd by DJ Friction. Always a sucker for that deep Reece bass tone but Nymfo has used it well and the melody is nicely complemented with a piano riff. Vocal is what you would expect from any Drum & Bass roller like this so nothing original there, almost to the point where I thought it probably would be better without it. Either way if you haven’t heard it yet or you love liquid Drum & Bass it’s certainly one to check out. Commercial suicide still bringing out so solid release and Nymfo delivering it well on a bit of a lighter note to his usual material. Hope he does some more stuff like this in the future.
Ulterior Motive Lost Contact Metalheadz
Can’t get enough of the stabs in this track, Ulterior Motive always bringing something a bit different to the table. The whole track from start to finish has this really dark industrial vibe to it. On the intro and breakdowns there is this faint element of pleasant atmospherics which give it good solid presents. Always nice to hear something so opposite work well together and fill out the rest of the track. Good DJ tool to as this was also featured in the latest fabric live mix cd by DJ Friction. These producers I think are defiantly one of the most underrated artists in the Drum & Bass scene so if you haven’t heard of them before go and check them out.

1952 Playaz Records One of the tracks taken from his new EP entitled “Journeys”. This track defiantly tells a bit of a story using the double bass sound as the main hook. Combination of that and some well produced minimal rolling drums make this stand out from the rest on the EP. The 2nd break down took me by surprise when a whole jazz band comes alive and nicely rolls out with the whole vibe of the track. A really nice element and done well by Jaydan. It’s the latest thing DJ Hype has released on his Playaz imprint, as seems the amount of releases Jaydan has had recently implies he is still churning out the bangers at an amazing rate.

Breaking Everything But Even Ouf The deep south of England may not have much in common with the Deep South of America but frazzled Plymouth bluesman, Thomas Ford, is keen to bridge the gap. His command of harmonicastrewn, slide-frenzied, back-porch-to-front-saloon Delta dynamics and Chicago chic is a marvel, illustrated on songs like the honky tonkin' 'You Ain't What You Used To Be', the swaggering 'Mississippi Fred McDowell Blues', the junkyard balladeering 'Peace Inside Blues' and the rollicking 'The Things I Used To Do'. These are authentic jams with emotional and instrumental diversity yet a stubborn adherence to old-time American stylistics. To top it all, Ford's loyal vocal renderings, and the supreme musicianship of his assembled cast, make for a perfectly realised, modern-day blues artifact.
HAPSUDDEN & THE MANKIND BAND Picaresque II Drowning Not Waving
They may sound like Deadhead disciples but this waspish ensemble are something altogether more dangerous - shooting venom of love and hate straight into your earballs and making you shiver and quiver with gentle strokes from their sonic caress. At times they elicit a noirish uncertainty with echoes of LA punks, X, but the music is filtered through a muslin of '60s American folk that lends the songcraft, especially the elegiac 'A Love Song For Howard Zinn', a timeless quality. If you're looking for a soundtrack to your melancholy, menace and manic episodes, Hapsudden will more than suffice. If not, the pure rock'n'roll chops will still keep you on board for the ride.
MORIATY Esperenza Easy Action
The Devon drum'n'guitar duo return with an EP that races like a headless chicken through twice as many genres as songs. Things kick off with the title track, a pugnacious groove that takes a Rage Against The Machine-pilfered motif and ties it to a sultry Latino refrain. 'Bitten' is awash with headsdown, no-nonsense Jack White-esque punkabilly blues riffola; while the self-mocking 'Moriarty' (pretty much everyone spells and pronounces their name wrongly) is a vocal-led barnstormer that sounds like 'Ballroom Blitz' played by the Arctic Monkeys. EP closer, 'Gods & Ghosts', sees Moriaty team up with Jonny Steel from Devon hip-hop ensemble, The Scribes, for some old school rap'n'roll tagteamwork with a surprising level of pathos. Good spirited stuff.
CULTSKINS Perversions Hardboiled
That moniker may take some getting used to but there's no denying these nomadic crust punks' commitment to transgressive rock'n'roll. You'd probably think that their 'Perversions' debut is worthy of disgust. You're wrong. Once freed from the judging eyes and ears of witless peers the wholly offensive stratagem becomes jagged with satirical wonderment. The band's language is a damning critique of how society normalises sexual aggressiveness. They show their softer side on the less cryptic 'Refusing To Be A Man' which namechecks and profiles radical pro/feminist agitators like John Stoltenberg, Valerie Solanis and Andrea Dworkin. Of course, it's hard to tell unless you read the lyric sheet, as the music sounds like Discharge being boiled alive. www.247magazine.co.uk

Lewis Fautzi + Nuklear Default
Samaris One Little Indian Icelandic mood-music maestros, Samaris, have more in common with Björk and Sigur Rós than shared citizenship. Theirs is also a world of oftdesolate, detailed and dreamlike soundscapes that straddle the line between electronic precision and a tangible morphous naturality. And Jófríður Ákadóttir's ethereal, breathy coo - giving voice to nineteenth century Icelandic poems, no less effortlessly strays into Björk territory with its gentle childlike soprano and assorted tics and turns. The likes of 'Hljóma þú' and 'Góða Tungl' are startling explorations, utilising clarinets, scattershot beats and restraint; transforming nocturnal folk music into something quite unsettling and beautiful. Oh, and they're all teenagers. That's it. I'm giving up.
Turn Soma
Scotland's Soma imprint shouldn't really need an introduction, but to those of you who may have been living under a rock for the past couple of decades, or recently discovered how spiffing techno actually is may be interested to find that this is the label from the ever wicked Slam. Now as they approach their four hundredth release, this four tracker from Portugal's Lewis Fautzi (who also records as 'Nuklear Default' so some multiple personality studio sessions must have been afoot), is more than worthy of a spin or two. The very Harthouse sounding 'Point' and the deep and dark 'Turn' are the two stand out tracks on this one but all four are worth checking.
THE BACK TEETH Latro! Fremo! Birdlip
Spicy rock'n'roll bands come and go but few have the audacity to split up and then record their debut album. San Diego's The Back Teeth are such a band and they are/were cerebral-cortex-crunchingly ace. If you can imagine what would happen if Magma and Tragedy were fired at each other in the Large Hadron Collider after an absinthe bender, you'd be nowhere close to describing their startling and oftincomprehensible powder-keg progcore. After one listen of the torturous 'Quid Novi' or the dyspepsiainducing 'Bellum Letale', it feels like there's no point in listening to anything else, such is the towering nature of the band's modus operandi. I'd be happy with that, considering the amount of loathsome garbage out there these days.
Damon Wild + Tim Taylor Bang The Acid! Rebanged
Missile 2.0 Oh how I overjoyed to see the return of one of the greatest techno labels out there. Missile recordings have released some of the most timeless music out there, and kicking off their 2.0 reincarnation with some monster remixes of 'Bang The Acid'. Fans of the big room sound will be loving The Advent + Industryalizer mix while Funk D'Void, 88uw, Angel Alanis, Echoplex and more provide some choice interpretations. However, it's the mix of London's Ben Sims that takes pride of place here, really twisting the acid to full effect amidst some hugely infectious drum programming. This one has been played all over by yours truly and fans of the original should check it for the Original and the Hardfloor version too!
PSYCHIC TEENS Come SRA
Fucked-up doom-gaze post-punk gothcore with lashings of reverb and baritone melodies designed to push you over the abyss? Hello Psychic Teens, you curmudgeonly beautiful bastards. They can't even be bothered with song titles longer than four letters. 'H#TE' is a particularly beastly concoction, like Iceage and Sisters Of Mercy doing dark battle. 'LUST' is a brooding Swans-esque dirge until they unleash the biggest wall of guitars you've ever heard. 'LESS' takes Interpol to logical noise-rock extremes. 'VEIL' is proto-goth melodrama. The title track plays out like a lost Southern Death Cult nugget. And on it goes, until you arrive at the other side with your skin pale and itchy from all that lack of daylight. It was worth it.
EMILY BARKER & THE RED CLAY HALO Dear River Linn
You can stuff your aloof Laura Marlings in a sack, I want my female folk/roots singers with humility, integrity and guts. Step forward, Emily Barker, and her fourth long-player 'Dear River': a major sonic leap forward and a treasure chest of heartpiercing trinkets, fragile forget-me-nots and tales of displacement; where you're reminded, at every turn, by legends of yore. The stunning 'Letters' is a slowcore pearl drawing from the same dark well as Low, 'Sleeping Horses' and 'The Cormorant And The Heron' betray Karen Carpenter's majesty, while elsewhere, the weighty presence of Patti Smith, Neil Young, Carole King and Stevie Nicks can be felt nestled within the richly layered instrumentation and Barker's intimate country-girl timbre.
Blacknecks 001 Blacknecks White
After a recent gig in Glasgow, following a bit of prior research I happened across Rub-A-Dub records, one of the few decent record stores remaining in the UK. Whilst checking out the series of new records in stock, this one leapt out at me by the description of 'four hard bangers', which is enough to make any man go moist. The producers behind Blacknecks wish to remain anonymous it appears but the quality and sheer distortion and punch on this is something else, especially on the B1 track. Sadly this record ended up getting smashed on the flight home, thanks to a certain UK airline, but a replacement copy was ordered and I have been frequently playing it since.
Gary Beck Video Siren Bek Audio
Another one from Scotland here this month and I don't quite know what it is with Gary Beck's material but one thing that draws me (and thousands of others) into his sound is the ability to keep a really detailed groove, yet make it sound so simple. This was definitely the case on last year's 'Before The Crash' on Soma, which was played by pretty much every techno DJ I know. 'Video Siren' is basically just some quirky percussion, a vocal that builds repeating the title and a monster of a kick, but when it's played out the reaction is phenomenal. This is one that is really good for building a set or layering on top of another track as a loop.

They share a common concern and affection for people and the patina of their everyday lives, yet they approach their subject differently. The result is a fascinating comparison, between periods of rural life in the South West and between attitudes and approaches to photography over four decades.

Tweed works largely with appropriated material which is re-filmed and re-contextualised, adding narratives that obscure the film’s original source, location and authorship. It is uncertain whether the places or events depicted occur in the past, present or future, or in some kind of parallel existence. He exposes the physicality and materiality of the
virtual by undermining its invisibility and focusing on the data centres, cabling, codecs and base materials through which it exists.

This exhibition looks at her life through four key themes: Wife and Mother, Politician and Personality, Friend and Foe and Honorary Plymothian. Items on display from the city's permanent collections include the outfit she wore for her introduction to Parliament, photographs, a diamond necklace and earrings that she left for Plymouth's future Lady Mayoress' to wear at civic occasions. Paintings and other works of art on loan from the National Portrait Gallery, the Government Art Collection, the Imperial War Museum and the American Museum in Bath are also included.

Norwich’s favourite son makes his transition onto the big screen. In the latest chapter in his descent into middleaged mediocrity, the local radio presenter finds himself fighting for his job on North Norfolk Digital after a hostile takeover. He shafts his fellow presenter to keep his job, but his ex-colleague decides to take hostages until he gets what he wants. Alan is the only man he will speak too and needless to say the silver haired fox takes full advantage of situation to advance his career. Going by the trailer this should be a laugh a minute riot.
2 GUNS (TBC) Released: 16 August Dir: Baltasar Kormákur Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Paula Patton and Denzel Washington, 2013/US/TBC A DEA agent (Washington) and an undercover Naval Intelligence officer (Wahlberg) who end up investigating each another find they have been set up by the mob after they pull a heist to grab $40 million of a gangster’s money. The heavy-weight cast and The Departed style twisty plot should ensure a good evening’s entertainment, and for the action fans I think it is pretty safe to say that that there will be a few more than 2 guns on show!

His problem is that he is hopelessly afraid of heights, which is slightly surprising for an aeroplane! Dusty is aiding in his quest by the support of his mentor Skipper and a host of new friends who help to make his dreams come true. I expect this film to have a smooth flight into the hearts of children this summer.

This time round Frank Moses (Willis) is uprooted from his happy suburban existence because some portable nuclear weapons are stolen and Frank and his former colleagues Marvin (Malkovich) and Victoria (Mirren) are implicated. They are chased by just about every intelligence service in the world in this high octane action film.
Released: 23 August Dir: Neil Blomkamp Starring: Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster and Matt Damon, 2013/US/TBC Carrying on thematically from where the hugely entertaining District 9 left off, director Neil Blomkamp’s follow up is set in the year 2154. In this imagined future the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. Max De Costa (Damon) decides to take on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.

Dir:Jeff Wadlow Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jim Carrey, 2013/US/118 min Sequel to the surprisingly successful adult comicbook adaptation. This time round the costumed high-school hero, Kick-Ass, joins up with a group of normal citizens who have been inspired by his butt-kicking to don costumes and fight crime. Meanwhile the super-villain, Red Mist plots an act of revenge that will affect everyone Kick-Ass knows. Jim Carey joins the cast this time round and the movie will be all the better for his comedic presence.

This reimagining uses the native American warrior Tonto to tell the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into the legend of justice - The Lone Ranger.

Discovered by renowned producer Dan Carey aka Mr Dan (Hot Chip, Bat For Lashes, Kylie Minogue), TedZed is an 19 year-old multi-instrumentalist and producer from deepest rural Somerset. Debut single 'I Don't Mind' (out May 6th) was recorded and produced in TedZed's self-built music 'laboratory' and mixed by Carey. The track successfully blends distorted guitar, trance-y synths, and harmoniously layered vocals into a powerful and memorable disaffected alt-pop anthem, which has echoes of the artists who inspire TedZed – which include Muse, Pink Floyd and The Beach Boys. How many punk troubadorks with a beard and a gravel-strewn croon does it take to change a lightbulb? I can't answer that but Dutch soloist, TIM VANTOL, certainly has his head screwed on. Oof! And thankfully his songs fell on the right side of earnest and streetsmart (No Fest, Stamford, 22nd June). Melodic hardcore quartet, THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, plied their trade with precision and heart, while diehard pop-punks, VANILLA POD, proved that you can grow old gracefully without forfeiting spirit. The next day in Lincoln, Vantol and the Daylights were at it again, this time joined by the folk-rock jollies of JAKE & THE JELLYFISH, the blue-collar roots-rock of WISECRACK, and the reflective strums of BAD IDEAS aka Sam Cook (Kind Bar, Lincoln, 23rd June). To celebrate the opening of Plymouth's Tiki Bar & Diner, BRUNEL and THE JERKS took turns to reduce us into quivering heaps of sweat and adulation (29th June). I won't tell you how great Brunel were because I wax lyrical about them too much, but I can tell you that The Jerks' feversome post-rock'n'roll was a triumph of substance and style. Reliving their post-hardcore glory days, BOYSETSFIRE seemed genuinely humbled by the crowd's rapturous response to their earnest, leftist sonics; especially the likes of 'Rookie' (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 3rd July). Meanwhile unreconstructed hardcore boys-to-men, BANE, kept things predictable with gang chants, skater shorts and NYHC-saluting dynamics. Poppier but no less effective, APOLOGIES I HAVE NONE proved that muscle and manpower have nothing on heart-on-sleeve confession rock. They're just so goddamn affable, are 3DBS DOWN (Lady Luck, Canterbury, 4th July). Perhaps that's why they failed to make much of an impact on a crowd that clearly, and in one case quite literally, needed to see some blood on the dancefloor. Before them, nice-but-dim old school punks, THE HALFWITS, provided light relief. Next stop, Germany, for the Fallig Open Air festival, nestled in steep vineyard country near the Mosel river (Enkirch, 5-6th July). Quite stunning. Monstrous horsefly bite reactions aside, we had a gloriously sozzled time pogoing to mini-legends, H2O, and their ridiculous slogan-saturated hardcore; heckling Apologies I Have None; marvelling at Canada four-piece, MUTE's tech-core nonsense; shedding our minds' shoes to the mild-mannered gypsy-folk of RASGA RASGA; and bemoaning the suffocating emo-rock arrogance of HEISSKALT. Had the ever-lovable 2000 Trees fest ever seen such merciless sunshine? I thunk not (Gloucestershire, 11-13th July). The pre-fest knees-up saw THE XCERTS croon their way through epicurean fuzz-pop classics, FUTURE OF THE LEFT gnash and snarl their way through the cutest of ugly rock songs, and FRANK TURNER croak his way through the whole of 'Love, Ire And Song' to a crowd who knew every word. Go learn the words to Crucifucks' debut album instead. Far more liberating. Best new discovery were STEALING SHEEP: a female trio rooted in pagan-esque psyche-folk with a twelve-piece accompanying jazz band. Beguiling and bewitching. In the Britpunk corner, GNARWOLVES, THE ARTERIES and WOAHNOWS rose to the challenge with their boisterous melody-strewn vignettes; smiley London quartet, AXES, had all the jittery math-rock bases covered; DRY THE RIVER supplied the shmindie-folk torch songs and EL MORGAN's gentle country garnered a tentful of converts. Next year we expect three days of blood and thunder. Chagstock fest was a very pleasant surprise (Chagford, Devon, 20th July). Situated in the rolling hills of Dartmoor and blessed with yet more tropical sunshine, we witnessed the understated neo-folk loveliness of EMILY BARKER & THE RED CLAY HALO, the rent-a-soundbite working class heroics of BILLY BRAGG and, er, THE BOOMTOWN RATS: wherein Bob Gedd'off ponced around the stage in a glittery suit like an emaciated orangutan with a Liberace complex.
