Andy Council studied Animation at Bournemouth, and since graduating in 1997 he’s found his way into doing illustration work for a range of clients all around the world including The Guardian and The Big Issue. He lives in Bristol, and does community art projects and murals as well as design work. He takes a lot of inspiration from the unique urban landscape and street art of Bristol. He also has a fascination with prehistoric beasts, which often feature in his work. Of the artists who inspire him, he says there are too many to name, but mentions Kozy and Dan, Chris Martin, Jeff Soto, WON ABC, Jeremy Fish, Ben Newman and loads of Bristol and West artists. In the future he hopes to see his dinosaurs made large scale, and would like to have his own city dinosaur that he could live in, and travel the world. andycouncil.co.uk andycouncil.blogspot.com

Now in it’s tenth year, Relentless Wakestock 09 takes place at Abersoch, Cardigan Bay, North Wales, from 10 – 12 July. Bristol’s legendary floating nightclub, The Thekla celebrates it’s 25th birthday on 2 – 3 May. First moored at the Mud Dock in August 1983 after a 732 mile journey around the coast of Britain to Bristol, the 180ft coaster was previously used to transport timber across the Baltic Sea. However, its life was cut short when it ran aground off Gravesend and ended up in a scrapyard in Sunderland. It was then rescued and sailed to Bristol to become a live music and club venue, which opened in May 1984 and has become one of the key pillars of the Bristol music scene ever since. Current owners, DHP have given the boat a much needed makeover, but still retaining it’s character. Anyone who is anyone has performed there and the boat is often used for ‘secret’ small one off shows for larger bands too, the likes of Duffy, Franz Ferdinand, Babyshambles, Joss Stone and Crowded House have all performed there. 90s club nights like Cooler, Kandi Klub and Espionage were based on the boat, which now hosts popular nights like Blowpop amongst others. Regular club attendee and Bristolian graff legend Banksy also gave it his seal of approval with his ‘Grim reaper’ tag on the waterline. David, can you tell us why you use lots of different aliases? Why not just one name? DD: Yeah… um… I think its just… you know what? If you’re trying to be creative, and there’s no limitation, then it can be quite difficult. And if there are boundaries, then you can push them. We feel really comfortable in a confined space, creatively. We’re aware that it might seem confusing, but to us we need the limitations of each project, because it pushes us to think without the boundaries… its quite ironic, I know. Luckily no one minds. Boundaries spur our creativity on. For example, if someone was to tell us now, “You have to make a bluegrass album”, it would be quite a challenge, but knowing that it had to be a bluegrass album it would spur us on to create something with the medium of bluegrass, and do something new with it, as opposed to someone saying, “Ok guys, just do whatever you want,” because we want to do everything, and how do you do that on one album? So even though you work under many different names, do you think you have a little signature that makes things sound like they’re yours? Can you describe it? DD: I don’t think I can. What we do is so varied… oh man, that’s a really difficult question. First of all, I have to admit, yes, there’s probably something, but I couldn’t describe it. There are definitely things that I hear and I think, “Oh, that sounds like us,” or “that’s typically us.” When it comes to DJing, it’s quite different. And I think Stef and I still don’t understand DJing very well. For example, I couldn’t really describe anyone else’s style. It’s hard to describe. And the other thing is that it’s probably not our role to be describing it, we should probably just be doing it. We just do what sounds good. The same goes for choosing the tracks that we play when we DJ. If there’s one thing we’ve learned, its that when we try and prepare things, that’s when things go wrong. So when it comes to choosing what to play, it is such a natural instinct, you either like it or you don’t. And when you like it, you play it out. We don’t question the system, or lack of system, if you will.

“We don’t think in terms of genre. We’ve been called kings of bootleg, electro clash, punk funk, nu rave, and all that stuff. Whatever people want to use to describe us is fine, in the end it’s all dance music” edits…” and it’s a much easier way of conveying a message but it’s just fashion. We don’t think in terms of genre. We’ve been called kings of bootleg, electro clash, punk funk, nu rave, and all that stuff. Whatever people want to use to describe us is fine, in the end it’s all dance music. So which projects are you working on at the moment? DD: What we’re doing now is setting up an internet radio station called Radio Soulwax. It’s going to broadcast 24 hours a day. The good thing about that is that we pay a blanket license, and can play whatever we like, so don’t have to get permission from artists when we use their tracks, like we would if we released an album. At the moment, we’re making content for the station. It’s going to be 24 hours of mix music every day, absolutely free for people to listen to. We wanted to do it because we thought that it would have a longer shelf life than one album… There’s an incredible amount of work to do to get it ready. Almost insurmountable, but we’re doing our best to finish it. Once it’s up and running, we’ll add new content every week. Probably one external mix, there are friends of ours like Tiga or Erol Alkan, you know, other people who want to do radio mixes for us, and we’re going to try to do one live show a week. It will be very unlikely that you’ll hear the same thing twice. Is that a response to today’s changing music industry?

DD: Yeah. And we just don’t understand why no one has ever done that. It seems such an obvious way of bringing music to people. The only thing is that it’s quite expensive. Obviously when you put out records people have to go and buy them… and we still believe that people will buy music, but when it comes to DJing or a compilation, this just seems like a much How come a country with such a boring cultural reputation more modern way for people to access music, people will as Belgium manages to produce such good music, for probably listen to stuff much more on their laptops or their mp3 example Eskimo (highly acclaimed Belgian record label), or their phone than they would if they bought a CD and put it and of course you guys…? into a CD player. We’re hoping to launch the station in June. DD: I think that countries that don’t have such a strong, So how would you like to be remembered? defined culture as places like the UK or France or Germany, As mash up kings? for example Canada, Belgium and Switzerland, all have an interesting blend of influences. In Belgium, you grow up with English, German, French and Dutch all around you, and all these different elements influence you… For example, take Peaches, from Canada – with the American/French influences in Quebec, her music is quite American but it’s got a very European feel to it, and Switzerland produces amazing stuff as well. How do you feel about being tagged as the kings of bootleg and so on? DD: Whatever people want to use, we don’t care. In a way describing music like that is a very very limited method of communicating. But it’s easier to say, “oh, you like nu disco? I like nu disco…” than saying, “Do you like that kind of music that sounds like disco, but its kind of new and its now and it’s

DD: No. Every genre has bad stuff in it. With the mashups and the bootlegs, there are so many crap ones that we’ve been “credited” for. I guess we’d like to be remembered as the guys who did many things but remained true to themselves… Catch 2 Many DJs at Blowpop’s Big Weekend at Swindon’s Oasis Centre on 8 May, Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Swindon on 9 May, then at Motion in Bristol on 9 May (late set), at Benicassim festival in Spain (16 – 19 July), and at Creamfields in Cheshire (29 – 30 August) amongst many more dates. soulwax.com Words: Lauren Taverner Brown

Words: Aldo Vanucci You are playing at both the South West Drum n Bass Awards and Beach Break Live soon, if we miss you there, where else can clubbers of the South West catch you? I’m doing the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Blowpop Festival and at Beatz and Bobs in Exeter. Last time we spoke you told me your new album was more of a return to your roots. What prompted that move? Well, I have four major loves in music – funk, jazz, disco and latin, those are what inspire me, what make me get creative with samples. I remember when we were kids and were passionate about music, well I’m still like that, I’m still just a kid that gets excited about music, 16 |

excited about making music that kids will get into, and those elements that I sample from cross all colours and creed. On this album there is a lot of 80s feeling music. I think it’s okay to take a sample that has been used before and flip it, use it differently, or take a track that has been sampled to death and take a different part, you know, use it in a way that no one else has. Does being a label boss, as well as a DJ and producer change how you view music? Yeah, definitely, you need to become more critical of what you hear. You have to consider the commercial side of music. Saying that though, a lot of the time I just go with my gut feeling about something, you just have to do what you feel is right.

Download culture, what’s your view on it? God that a massive question… Well I do believe we should pay for music, it’s someone’s job to create it, and there are studio costs involved and so on. At the moment it’s a time of big change, people think they should get music for free and if people are able to hear my music for free, then at some point if I’m not making money from music, I’d have to charge more for my DJ sets, so the costs to a promoter would go up, then people would have to pay more to see me. It all has a knock on effect. You live in Brighton, which is awash with DJs, producers and musicians, why do you think that is? I think the main reason is location, it’s a beautiful place and so close to London that it has become a mini London. It has great club nights, great places to eat and a good infrastructure to make things happen. Also over time what has happened is friends of creatives follow down, so the creative community has just grown and grown. I miss working in a record shop, I used to enjoy shopping in your record shop in Brighton, and I think that a record shop has always been so much more than just a place to buy music. What’s your fondest memory of record shops? Exactly what you just said, it was more than just a shop to buy music, you’re constantly talking to people, both customers and people around you. Working there also taught me about business. I was introduced to so much music by others that I wouldn’t have experienced without that shop, I’ve just been in the studio for two days solid with A Skillz working on a new mixtape which half the music on there I wouldn’t have known without those shop years. I also meet lots of people that are my peers now, Norman Cook, Phats & Smalls, I also met a few film stars who were filming in the area. Great times. Apart from Aldo Vanucci, who would you most like to remix your tracks, and who would you like to remix? You’re a funny guy…! I think I’d most like High Contrast to mix something of mine, he’s great and always delivers a good product. I’d like to remix something by Kool & the Gang from their 1969 - 1974 period. Have you ever used the line “do you know who I am” and if so, why? Never, and I never would. I’m proud of who I am and what I’ve achieved and I’m not an arsehole and I would say if you use that line you are starting towards being one. I haven’t heard you DJ for ages, but if I left my pipe and slippers at home and came to see you play, what should I expect? Well I’m always evolving, but I always bring the funk and that never changes. I also use acappellas, drops from Dynamite MC, exclusive intros, all that. I’m constantly trying to better myself, push myself to deliver 110% every time I play, whether that be to 30 people or 30,000. So much contemporary dance music owes a debt to hip hop, who should we make the cheque payable to? Well its due to Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash, both inspired different areas but they were pretty much the ones.

What’s your favourite break or sample? That’s a hard one but I would say Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers ‘Ashley’s Roach Clip’. Which current producers are floating your boat? A Skillz is always excellent, Chase & Status are always great, High Contrast, Bird Peterson and Atomic Hooligan. My favourite slots are warm up sets, now that you are a huge international superstar DJ do you miss playing small clubs or warm up sets? Yeah I so fucking do. I started off doing small bars an warm up sets, then moved to clubs and now run my own night, but I would really love to do is a Sunday afternoon eight hour set of funk, disco, hip hop and latin set, you know a real education. That would be my ideal set.

“My ideal set would be a Sunday afternoon eight hour set of funk, disco, hip hop and latin set, you know, a real education.” I once saw Radiohead play to 30 people when they warmed up for the Sultans of Ping FC at the Pink Toothbrush in Raleigh, I also saw Norman Cook when he did a warm up set at the early days of the Heavenly Social before Leftfield and the Chemical Brothers, who have you seen recently that you feel could go on to be massive? Crookers, Deekline, Skream and Bird Peterson all have amazing talent and potential for a massive hit record. If I secretly put you forward for Britain’s Got Talent, apart from DJing, what would your act consist of? I’d tell jokes, be a comedian, maybe do a breakdance routine… Would you ever try and do Krafty Kuts Live and who would be in the band? That’s exactly what I’m working on now. This album has all the best elements of the 80s in it and we are looking at doing it live. I’ve spent my life doing nothing but music if you could have chosen another career what would it be? Football manager. I’d get my coaching badges and do that, or maybe player/manager. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, even the silly ones. Good luck with your South West gigs. Cheers Aldo.

Flexing their vocal chords of steel and polishing off their backstreet beats, the entrants of this year’s Vauxhall UK Beatboxing Championships are preparing for the hotly contested regional heats. Far from the madding crowd of ITV’s ‘talent’ contests, the beatboxing championships promise to be pumped full of style and attitude as the UK’s finest beatboxers show us what they have to offer. With the reigning champion, MC Zani, being knocked out in the first heats in February, this year’s competition is guaranteed to produce a new champ. Finalists will have to rev up a 2000-strong audience at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire as well as impress the judges – beatboxing royalty TyTe, Faith SFX and Indra, with loud-mouthed legend Stig of the Dump presiding over the action as host. Narrowly missing out on the final last year, Bristolian Alex Levan, aka Minamus, has proved he is a force to be reckoned with. With experience under his belt, he will be attempting to impress both crowd and judges and win a coveted place in June’s grand final. Minamus chatted to 247 as he prepared to do battle, beatbox style…

Have you had a busy year after reaching the semi-finals of the beatboxing championships last year?

What was it that attracted you to beatboxing and how did you first realise you were better than most people at it?

Where can we catch you beatboxing, other than the championships in Bristol next month?

I always had a big interest in rhythm from playing the drums as a kid, but I didn’t have a very good drum kit. I heard beatboxing from a good friend of mine and it blew me away! I thought; ‘you know what, I want to learn this!’ So I got my head down and started practicing. It wasn’t a case of realising I was better than most people, I just worked hard until I got better and better and then suddenly I realised I was getting quite good!

In the shower….joking! I’ve got a talent competition coming up in Birmingham which is raising money for the British Heart Foundation. It’s at The Crescent Theatre on Wednesday 6 May and it’s all for a good cause.

How would you describe your style and which artists (if any) have influenced you in developing that style? I would say my style is more technical than most. I like to focus on drum fills and different rhythms and making the sounds clean and crisp. A lot of beatboxers have influenced me and I guess I take a bit from each. Rhazel of course influenced me a lot as he’s too good!

Oh yes definitely, after making it to the UK finals I had all sorts phoning me up! BBC 1 Points West news did an interview with me and that got broadcasted on TV. I went on Vibe 101 radio, Radio Bristol; I even went in the Evening Post newspaper and the Independent. Good times! I really loved the exposure. I’ve been doing a lot of shows around as well. Going on stage getting the experience; it’s a good laugh. Do you get nervous before going on stage? Any rituals or strange superstitions you carry out before a gig?! Ohhh every time I’m getting ready to go up I get nerves! It’s good though because it puts me on edge and makes me focus more. My ritual is to drink loads of water and keep hydrated before a performance! Would you ever consider the fast-route to fame and enter a talent competition like ‘Britain’s Got Talent’? Ummmm no! People have said to me before ‘you should go on Britain’s got talent’ but it doesn’t really appeal to me. A few beatboxers have gone on it but never got far... I don’t want to be one of them I guess!!

And finally have you ever ‘googled’ yourself? Come on... tell us the truth! I swear everyone has just for a laugh but you always get the most random things. When I googled Minamus it came up as some American heavy metal group! Soooo not me! Thanks Minamus, and good luck in Bristol! You can catch Minamus in the Vauxhall UK Beatboxing Championships regional heats on 23 May at The Croft in Bristol. myspace.com/minamus87

It would be great if one day we could sustain the band without having to work other jobs, that's every musician's dream. And we’d like to reach bigger audiences to make them aware of the social and political issues we stand for. The most useful things we’ve learnt on the course have been about how important retaining rights are to the artist, and trying to predict where the music industry is going to be in a year or two’s time. With a lot of labels collapsing or laying off staff, and the ability to communicate with more of your audience through the internet, its easy to see that a new business model has to emerge for the industry to evolve. New York cool isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, at least, not any more. The Virgins’ retro art-disco sonics are clearly designed for catwalks, industry love-ins and dim fan-boys/girls who need a new Strokes every year to justify their indie credentials at Black Canvas their beloved club ‘nites’. You’re welcome Rise to them chumps. I’ll stick with the superior (Cool & Deadly) Floridian punk trio, Virgins, who opt for sweaty-balled, darned-socked substance over rehashed and over-marketed style. Black Canvas is vocalist Mr Melody and So there. MC Rider Shafique, with production from Pressure Drop’s Chubby J. Reggae is a huge Backbone influence on their vocal styles, and rhythms are mainly hip-hop, with excursions into Metric other styles. Shafique’s lyrical skills are best Fantasies displayed on ‘Once Again’, which blends (Metric Music International) an Eastern influence with a dancehall beat. The album’s mood is generally laidback, and Four albums in and nomadic electrolyrics are conscious nearly all the way- this rockers, Metric, have decided to go it alone works better on some tracks than others. – setting up a global DIY operation to allow, Highlight: the breaktastic ‘We Fear Not’ you assume, for more creative control. Guru’s solo career has been quite a hit and miss affair, yes Jazzmatazz is essential but by the time he got to Vol 4 it was wearing thin. For a while now he has been using producers that when compared to primo, like most would, aren’t up there. On this album you feel that compared to most MCs Guru still holds his own but the beats are just okay rather than classic. I always felt that Guru did best without cameos and guest spots by others. A quality release but Partly sung, partly rapped, MLM’s lyrics grab you from the start. The latest single London Town is The Renaissance the strongest track: a tale of back-in-the(Universal) day garage, set to a goodtime house beat. The most impressive line is on ‘Falafal’: ‘£5 The long awaited second solo album from 12” just the down the road, fuck that 79p much loved ex A Tribe Called Quest MC download.’ Now you’re talking, son! With various sneaky play The Lanes in Bristol on 9 May. but scarce bits of material and shelved Arash Torabi projects adding to the tension of hungry fans, this couldn’t have come sooner. But it’s been worth the wait. With the immediate standout tracks such as Gettin’ Up, ManwomenBoogie, and We Fight/ We Love paving the way, the rest of the set grows upon each listen, and with Q-tip at the controls, the album has a very live and warm feel, sounding classic yet totally current. The Maccabees Wall Of Arms (Fiction)

They’re quite special, The Maccabees. Building their own melancholy-draped Eden of Epic between the Mystery Jets and Arcade Fire, ‘Wall Of Arms’ reaches far beyond the indie threshold; unearthing a worldly kind of weariness, beautifully netted by Orlando Weeks’ effortlessly heart-wrenching voice. The South London quintet are far, far better than the bands you think they sound like. In six months time you’ll wish you’d realised this earlier. Now step to it. Backbone

In Case Of Fire Align The Planets

(Search And Destroy) Getting back to power-trio basics, Northern Ireland’s In Case Of Fire hit paydirt with an album that packs a weighty punch and draws fiery melodies from burning-heart dynamics. If Therapy? had benefited from modern recording technology they may have sounded as epic as ‘The Cleansing’; although Steven Robinson’s vast vocal range lends the band a more proggy, Cedric Bixler-esque bent, especially on the monumental ‘Plan A’. An auspicious debut. Backbone

DEMOS

Jake Gabai “Sol Sessions”

An excursion into deep house from Jake Gabai. It’s soulful clean and mesmerising. Only one track is contained within but I think it’s enough to establish that Jake knows exactly what he’s doing in this genre (whereas I would not have a clue). He hails from Cardiff and his DJ skills are firmly placed in the scene. As he wants to be known as producer over DJ I would need more to be able to give an honest opinion on exactly how far his productions might take him. jakegabai.co.uk. Jon Kennedy

Ok Pilot

Exeter punks, Ok Pilot, have knocked out four new songs in honest DIY fashion, just for the hell of it. And why not? Especially when a couple of those songs – ‘Shivers’ and ‘Good Health’ – are, arguably, two of their finest towering achievements. The former is the kind of emotionally magnificent song Samiam wish they could still write; the latter is a very welcome change of pace that proves the band are primed for new approaches. The other two songs are fucking brilliant too: sexualized rock’n’roll throbalongs that probably wouldn’t clean up after themselves. Filthy buggers. myspace.com/okpilot

Musically they create Orbitalesque soundscapes to great effect. Tight downtempo breaks pulse alongside etherial vocal loops and crisp synths. These tracks wouldn’t go amiss on an early chill out comp from the mid to late 90s. Its good gear, tight, clear and crisp. myspace.com/panampweb Jon Kennedy

Digital Shout

Dr. Ake

Sailing in on a nautical theme, Plymouth’s Dr. Ake deliver an interesting line in wonky new wave with lovely lyrical passages that, collectively, reads like a litany of subconscious urges and reveries. In a Janner accent. Released through local label Onec (onec.tv), ‘Stonehouse Dreams’ is the point where sea shanty meets indie abstraction and – as is often said about bands that inevitably do – doesn’t sound like anything else. Apart from a bit of XTC, maybe, but they’re long gone. You may not fall in love with Dr. Ake straight away but you will want to see them again and it could get serious as time goes on. myspace.com/docake

Backbone Plymouth based Digital Shout or Aaron to his mum comes strong here with two bangers. Sort of two-step, sort of ska and all with a trippy edge to it. It’s hard edged and slamming, stomper gear. Track 2 is a mixture of the latter with an injection of dubstep. It’s actually quite frightening at times with backward vocals, ghostly synths and the dubstepped pwap pwap basslines. I like it! myspace.com/digitalshout

Transfere Project!

From London, Transfere Project! is Laura Mardon, her acoustic guitar and lots of charming extra bits like alarm clocks, accordion and toy glockenspiel. She’s quite an unusual lass (check her video biog on Myspace) which only adds to the attraction Jon Kennedy of songs such as ‘Trenches’, ‘Stepney’ and ‘Don’t Cut Those Lines’: bittersweet, reflective ditties inspired by everyday, personal-as-political situations and conversations, Akira You can’t help but be charmed by the honesty stuffed with neat couplets like “The cocaine nights, well, where did they get me? / My holy grail was somewhere near Stepney”. of these tunes. The production is god awful Endearingly uplifting. and the vocals hideously out of key, coupled myspace.com/transfereproject with some helium backing vocals, peaking Backbone kick drums and very, very messy rhythms. Akira sound like early Beck demos being played on a wonky tape… There is certainly Backbeat Sound System something in here that moves me but as a I always get into trouble when reviewing home listening product it’s a strange experience. They need a South West roots-reggae bands because decent producer and less acid in their system. they’re usually, quite literally, pale imitations akiraband.com of the real deal. Backbeat Sound System, on Jon Kennedy the other hand, are a substantially superior proposition. This is because a) they don’t sound like middle class hippies playing at Kid Twist being ‘streetsmart’ b) they sing about survival not smoking weed I’m sure by now someone has picked up or ‘peace’ and 3) they have fucking great tunes that honour the Kid Twist’s music. It’s genius! Vocoder lead lineage of reggae rather than shame it. And the club remixes are electro downtempo breaks. I played this neat too. Stellar stuff. myspace.com/backbeatsoundsystem gear on my radio show a long time ago and Backbone to this day it has not aged. Think Kraftwork, Gus Gus and Peter Frampton and you’re close. Track 5 is the one for me here with a “Tour De France” vibe, pacey in tempo and deep in rhythms and soul… This lad needs a record deal now before these production techniques age and the synth sounds become a talking point at If you want to submit any demos for review on this page, some MOOG convention. please contact Jon for a postal address via : myspace.com/kidtwistmusic Jon Kennedy

The Age Of Stupid (12a)

18 - 19 May: The Riverfront,

Newport, 01633 656757, newport.gov.uk Dir: Franny Armstrong, starring Pete Postlethwaite 2008/ UK/100 mins A powerful, shocking, in some ways quite extraordinary documentary that carries on from where An Inconvenient Truth left off. This takes on climate change, consumerism, and the need for massive personal and social change if we are to avert disaster. Pete Postlethwaite plays an archivist in the devastated world of the future, introducing well-chosen clips and asking the question: “Why didn’t we stop climate change when we still had the chance?” A truly radical, thought-provoking film, this is simply unmissable for anyone who cares about the future of the planet, their children or grandchildren.

A Beautiful Mind (12a) 16 May: Arnolfini, Bristol, 0117 9172300, arnolfini.org.uk Dir: Ron Howard, starring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly and Ed Harris 2001/US/135 mins From the heights of notoriety to the depths of depravity, John Forbes Nash, Jr. experienced it all. A mathematical genius, he made an astonishing discovery early in his career and stood on the brink of international acclaim. But the handsome and arrogant Nash soon found himself on a painful and harrowing journey of self-discovery. After many years of struggling with schizophrenia, he eventually triumphs over this illness, and finally – late in life – received the Nobel Prize. This is a wonderfully uplifting tale that is enhanced by the performances of the Russell Crow and Jennifer Connelly. The Boat That Rocked (15)

8 - 14 May: The Curzon

Cinema, Clevedon, 01275 871 000, curzon.org.uk Dir: Richard Curtis, starring Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Bill Nighy, Philip Hoffman 2009/UK/140 mins The new comedy from Richard Curtis, centred on the British pirate radio revolution of the ‘60s, largely takes place in a rusty fishing trawler moored off the coast of England. In 1966, arguably British pop music’s finest era, the BBC played only two hours of rock and roll every week. But pirate radio blasted rock and pop from the high seas 24 hours a day. And 25 million people – more than half the country’s population – listened to these pirates every single day. An ensemble comedy in which the romance takes place between young people and pop music.

The Diving Bell And The Butterfly (12a) 23 May: Arnolfini, Bristol, 0117 9172300, arnolfini.org.uk Dir: Julian Schnabel, starring Marie-Josée Croze and Max von Sydow, France/2007/112 mins The memoir of Jean-Dominique Bauby who became immobilized by ‘lockedin syndrome’ following a stroke, is the source for this visually artistic film. Bauby was a journalist before a stroke left him with movement in his left eye-lid. He wrote his memoir by blinking, taking over 3 minutes to construct a word, and his frustrations are brought to the screen with dark humour and cinematic panache by director Julian Schnabel. There will be a post-screening discussion on stroke and ‘locked-in’ syndrome with experts from Bristol Neuroscience including consultant neurologist Dr Richard Hardie, whose expertise is traumatic brain and spinal injuries and stroke. Duplicity (12a)

the formula for a product that will bring a fortune to the company that patents it first. But as the stakes rise and Claire and Ray try to stay one double-cross ahead, the two career loners find their schemes endangered by the only thing they can’t cheat their way out of: love. Memento (15)

9 May: Arnolfini, Bristol, 0117

917 2300, arnolfini.org.uk Dir: Christopher Nolan, starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano 2000/US/113 mins Leonard is played by Guy Pearce, who has witnessed the violent death of his wife and is determined to avenge it. But he has had short-term memory loss ever since the death and has to make notes – he even has memos tattooed to his body as reminders. The film is presented as a series of flashbacks so pay attention or you could walk out of the cinema a bit confused.

Cinema, Clevedon, 01275 871 000, curzon.org.uk Dir: Tony Gilroy, starring Clive Owen, Julia Roberts and Tom Wilkinson, US/2009/124 mins CIA officer Claire Stenwick (Julia Roberts) and MI6 agent Ray Koval (Clive Owen) have left government intelligence to cash in on the profitable cold war raging between two rival corporations. Their mission? Secure

Hot New Releases:

Released: 1 May

James Franco 2008/USA/128 mins Acclaimed filmmaker Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Paranoid Park) captures a pivotal moment in the gay movement’s struggle for civil rights with this skilfully and tenderly observed account of the life and work of Harvey Milk. The first openly homosexual man voted into significant U.S. public office in 1977, Milk’s brief but committed career inspired a generation of activists before he was assassinated the following year by a disturbed colleague. The phenomenal cast includes Josh Brolin, Diego Luna and James Franco, but the standout performance comes from Sean Penn whose turn as the charismatic politician glows with passion, humanity and wit.

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE (TBC)

Monsters Vs Aliens (PG)

11 - 12 May: The Riverfront,

Newport, 01633 656 757, newport.gov.uk. Dir: Gus Van Sant, starring Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and James Franco 2008/USA/128 mins When a meteorite from outer space hits a young California girl named Susan Murphy and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years. As a last resort, under the guidance of General W.R. Monger, on a desperate order from The President, the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to combat the aliens and save the world from imminent destruction! Great fun for all the kids.

LIVE Revolutionary Road (15)

Dir: Gavin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds and Liev Schreiber. 2009/US/97 mins

This film does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s all about the early years of Wolverine and how he became one of the X-men. Hugh Jackman plays the mutant superhero who has a major falling out with adoptive brother Victor Creed after his girlfriend is killed by his only living relative. The two live separate lives until they are united by the evil Stryker who wants to rid the world of the mutant problem. This is one of the years early blockbusters and is shaping up to be one of the best with fan favourite Gambit making an appearance in the series for the first time. Should be X-cellent.

26 - 27 May:The Riverfront,

Newport, 01633 656 757, newport.gov.uk Dir: Sam Mendes, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Kathy Bates. 2008/USA/UK/119 mins Adapted from the revealing novel by Richard Yates, Revolutionary Road is an incisive portrait of an American marriage seen through the eyes of Frank and April Wheeler. The story is set in 1950s America and the couple have always seen themselves as special, different, ready and willing to live their lives based on higher ideals. So, as soon as they move into their new house on Revolutionary Road, they proudly declare their independence from the suburban normality that surrounds them and determine never to be trapped by the social confines of their era. The reality is however different for the reunited stars of Titanic, but the end product is another triumph for director Sam Mendes.

CLUB

Released: 8 May STAR TREK (TBC)

Dir: J.J Abrams, starring Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto 2009/US/126 mins

Star Trek fans rejoice as the man behind Lost and Cloverfield takes on science fiction’s most precious commodity. This is a chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members during their time at Starfleet Academy. The cast features hot Brittalent Simon Pegg as Scotty and fresh from his turn as Sylar in Heroes, Zachary Quinto plays Spock. The effects will be out of this world, but reinventing Star Trek is like reinventing the wheel, and this film could certainly risk the wrath of the Trekkies. Verdict: Keep watching the skies.

Our eyes were well and truly opened as we joined Kiss 101 for their Takeover at Syndicate Bristol last month. We also joined forces with Lab, one of Bristol’s newest venues, to host a night from Brighton’s coolest record label - Tru Thoughts – in celebration of our Festival issue and the start of summer... it’s gonna be a hot one!
