ILLUSTRATION BY ZOE DAY Zoe Day is from Swansea, and is currently studying Visual Communications at Birmingham City University, specialising in illustration. She is inspired by nice things like fashion, cakes, pastel colours and the sunshine. She aims to create images that look good and make you feel good, with a bit of satirical humour thrown in every now and again. She is impressed and inspired by the work of David Downton, Stina Persson and Christina K and she’s a big fan of Art Nouveau, particularly Alfons Mucha. She graduates in June this year, when she plans to move back to Swansea, and hopes to work in fashion illustration. She’d like to produce editorial illustrations as well as seeing her work used in a visual merchandising or branding role. flickr.com/photos/zoeday magazine | 5

Lab Ear To The Ground

The beginning of March sees the start of what looks to be a shift in gear for the nightlife of Bristol. Lab, formerly Arc Bar, injects a full week of entertainment into it’s newly renovated, two storey nightclub, and the lineups are already looking impressive. A simple policy of quality music with an emphasis on live elements and variety makes Lab a party hot spot for the city centre. Lab is fitted with a full stage system and the clarity of Function 1 sound making it ideal for both gigs and clubbing. Keep those eyes peeled for the monthly Lab Schedule – but in the meantime we hear whispers of party starters such as A Skillz and Aphrodite passing through and even a little Tru Thoughts action. Lab is open from 5pm, Monday to Saturday as a bar, with events and club nights typically held from 9pm-3am daily, except Sunday’s which run from 3pm-1am. For more info contact labristol@gmail.com, call Paul on 07837 945669 or find them on facebook/myspace. This month, look out for Lab Live Thursdays, a return to the good old live band nights and Aquasky with Chew Magna, Mr Benn feat Souls Liberation and Sir Beans OBE amongst others on Sat 21 March.

La Roux Exclusive Online Motion Bmx Comp Interview! She’s got a shock of auburn hair with a distinctly 80s inspired Flock of Seagulls flicky quiff, which apart from being achingly trendy (the 80s are back, didn’t you know?) it gives you a pretty direct reference to her sphere of influence and goes hand in hand with the dreamy, synthy electro-pop sound of her music. Elly Jackson – better known as La Roux (named for her red mane, of course) is currently stealing the hearts of trendy music journos everywhere and was top of the list on all those “Ones To Watch” namedroppers at the end of last year. Alongside production partner Ben Langmaid, 20 year old La Roux creates pure electro pop, and allegedly only listens to 80s music, believing that current pop needs a shake up and should be more epic, like it was in the good old days (when she was just a twinkle in Mr Jackson’s eye – her dad, not the other Jackson… oh dear…). She is currently supporting Lily Allen on her UK tour and plays Bristol Academy on 18 March. 247 grabbed five minutes of precious La Roux time and tried to get to know her… go online to 247magazine. co.uk to read our exclusive interview and access loads more content, from our blog to exciting online-only competitions.

At the moment I’m trying “ to record everything live in

the same room, I think the sound is richer for it.

William Holland, aka Quantic, one of the most respected producer/musician/DJs bred from these fair isles is touching down in Bristol this month from his new home in Colombia. His meteoric rise from a clutch of 45’s on Breakin Bread, a prolific output on Tru Thoughts to a new life pursuing his love of latin music in Colombia has been a non-stop ride of insanely good genre bashing. With 12 studio LPs under his belt and a fantastic array of singles and remixes that take in everything from funk, soul, drum and bass, beats, afrofunk, descarga, cumbia etc, it’s entirely evident that his magic hands and musical vision know no bounds. 2009 will see his new band, Quantic And His Combo Barbaro come to light, an eagerly anticipated project with a melting pot of UK and Colombian musicians coming together. I for one cannot wait to get my ears around it! So with Quantic DJing at Bristol’s newest venue, Basement 45, on 27 March I caught up with him to find out what’s happening in his world.... 10 |

Hi Will, welcome home! Glad to be back? Yes sir, always good to return to this wet and cold place I call home! The exciting news of your new band is what we’re all talking about, can you tell us more? I put the new band together in Cali, it features some of the players I’ve been working with over the last two years in Cali and also Malcolm Catto on drums. The idea was to put together a band that plays a more tropical sound. That’s not to say it is a completely “latin music” band. The new record features a good selection of funk, soul, descarga and even some orchestral moments! Within these selections, I’m trying bring back some of the talent that made this music happen in the first place all those years ago. It must be personally very exciting to be working in Colombia with these musicians. And you must be discovering so much musically. How are you developing songs there? Yes, its a privilege, I’m trying to make the most of my time here, learning a lot of things, speaking to people, investigating the wealth of culture that exists here. I now have my studio in the house, so the house is a somewhat musical place to be. As a writer, I’m getting clearer about how I plan my music, the more and more I learn the art from others here, the more I can control my own thoughts and ideas. I usually lay down an initial idea with guitar or a voice, this could just be a simple guide or doodle, I do a lot of these, usually at night. Then, in the light of day, away from the presence of whiskey, I scan through, find the good bits and try to arrange them on to instruments I feel suitable for the sound I want. At the moment I’m trying to record everything live in the same room, I think the sound is richer for it and you can here the dialogue between the different musicians, this is what makes music interesting. As a relative unknown in Colombia, was it easy to make contact with people like Alfredo Linares and get to work with them? And how do they find the experience of translating old school cumbia, descarga, plena etc into the modern fusions that you are creating? Well, most of these guys are kind, open minded and welcome my pigeon Spanish enthusiasm. Alfredo has been especially marvellous, he’s such a kind person. In general, sometimes there is a fight to get people back to the old sound. There is a culture of “new is better” in Colombia, so getting people to replay older styles can be difficult. I’d say most players I’m working with and continue to work with, do get it and that’s the reason we’re playing together. People are open to new ideas or new forms of interpreting older forms, but the tricky part is explaining what you want! It’s also difficult, because what looks good on paper often doesn’t sound good on tape and the best moments in my recordings were unplanned and a part of the moment. When can we expect a UK appearance of the new band? I’m planning a tour for late August with Alfredo, Kabir of Panama & Malcolm Catto amongst others. Life must be so enriching and broadening in Colombia, yet the common perception here is that it’s a dangerous place. How’s it been immersing yourself in the

culture there? Like all less “comfortable” travel destinations there are always some places you shouldn’t go. Cali was a dangerous place in 80s and in some parts still is, but normal life still continues. My experiences have been very positive, there have been problems, but I believe that if you are sensible and respectful, you’re doing the best you can. I’d say the main day to day problem is language, I’m learning spanish as I go, so everyday is a learning process. It’s easy to order food and find addresses but the more expressive parts of language like describing music or art still evade me. Over the last year, I’ve been taking various excursions, often by car, to the north of country, there the culture is very different to Cali. In short, I’d say I’m very content to be living in the birthplace of Cumbia. Is DJing taking a back seat these days? Or is this part of your creative process that directly influences what you try to create live? And what can we expect to hear at your Bristol show? Not so much, I still DJ a lot, maybe not so much as before. I’m still finding a lot of interesting records, so it’s always a pleasure to showcase what I have found. I am definitely playing more in the States as I’m geographically closer. I also play on a regular basis in Cali. Records, on the whole, are still my method to learn. You can learn things from records that you cannot learn in a university or college. There is music that has been long forgotten or thrown aside by the mainstream ear. Records very much influence my creative process, they inspire me, inform me and most of all demonstrate to me the various tones and colours you can create. In Bristol, the show will very much depend on what music I have found in that month. I’m probably going to be in Panama and Barranquilla for a bit before then. I’ll also be playing a lot of tracks from the new record and the Flowering Inferno record. It’s obvious that you are not afraid of new paths. So where next after Colombia? Are there any other countries or cultures you are hoping to explore musically? Well, a fellow Englishman living in Cali described trying to leave Cali very well to me. He said its like trying to leave a lukewarm bath, you know you have to but you just want a little more time. I think it’s been like that for many people who have spent a lifetime in Cali. I do love it here but I would like to eventually live in a location where it is a little easier to operate. It is very hard to obtain a lot of things here, like tape for the studio, good instruments... I can see myself having problems with that. But, lets see what the future holds. What other plans have you got for 2009? I’m working on the second flowering inferno album, hopefully should be done in the next few months and after that, tour! tour! tour! Many thanks to Quantic. Don’t miss the ever increasing rarity of a UK DJ set from him at Basement 45 in Bristol, 27 March. It’ll be a roadblock for sure! quantic.org myspace.com/quanticmusic Words: Pete Isaac (Jelly Jazz – jellyjazz.com) magazine | 11

in different ways although I struggle to hear anything other than a sound shared around the same ambient (on occasion), dreary, electronic 80’s feel. But there’s no getting away from classic 80s icons as she adds, “But I would love to duet with Phil Oakey from The Human League.” Nestled snugly amongst the wealth of 80s inspired artists filtering into mainstream music, Little Boots’ synth soaked sounds are definitely fashionable and very trendy. But her attitude is modest – she’s said on her blog that she’s not aiming to be “cool” and tells me, “I like a lot of 80s artists but I don’t see myself in any kind of scene or revival. I play synths because that’s what I’ve done since I was a teenager, before that I played piano, and I can’t play guitar. I don’t really think about things being mainstream or not,” she said, “All I think about is if they’re good songs or not.”

With pop music taking a sharp turn towards the electronic sound recently, and dragging the 80s kicking and screaming back into fashion, one particular artist is here to make her mark firmly on the scene. Playing a mix of 80s style electronica and modern pop music ripe with the influences of Kylie, Gary Numan and David Bowie, Blackpool bred Victoria Hesketh (better known as Little Boots) brings a modern twist, and injects an appealing edge into a once great but almost forgotten sound. Victoria’s musical career kicked off with her playing covers in front of a camera in her parent’s garage, until she almost hit it big a few years ago with synth-pop group Dead Disco. The band fizzled out in late 2007 and she was set back momentarily, only to re-emerge as shining star Little Boots. Darling of the 2009 wave of electro fused pop music set to take this year by force, and deservedly placed amongst the elite with the BBC’s Sound of 2009 crowd, Little Boots has her sights set firmly on the future with her influences from the past directly in tow. Currently travelling back and forth working between the UK and US, I managed to catch up with her whilst on a train to Brighton for a chat. Her debut song, Stuck on Repeat, was produced by Joe Goddard from Hot Chip. But is working with such a well established artist the main reason behind her success? “Although having an association with a name people already recognise and respect helps,” she replies, “I think that it wouldn’t have worked if the song wasn’t any good in the first place. And Joe’s production is so special that people would be able to hear it whether he was known or not.” Her sound mixes the influences of working with modern day electro royalty like Goddard to her own musical tastes that includes iconic artists like Kylie and comeback kings, Take That. She reminisces, “The first album I can actually remember going to buy with my own money was Take That. I don’t think I’ve got it any more…” Although looking back to the 80s and her own music collection are an inescapable part of her sound, Little Boots also looks to the present for more musical gems, and namechecks Fever Ray, Telepathe and Heartbreak, all of which she claims to love

So what does Little Boots think about the influx of new female artists and front women in the charts, dominating this 80s revival, like Crystal Castles, La Roux and Lady GaGa? “I think there’s been a lot of strong female artists over the last few years, including women like Winehouse, Lily, Duffy...” she stated. “It’s not something that’s just started. I also think a lot of the new female artists that get compared are very different, but they’re bunched together in a way no one would do if they were boys with guitars. Saying that, the common theme does seem to be that they all have ideas and strong personalities they’re not afraid to use, which I think can only be a good thing.”

“I don’t see myself in any kind of scene or revival. I play synths because that’s what I’ve done since I was a teenager.” Although an artist with a talent and passion that is undeniable, only the next few months will tell whether she (like so many of her idols) will be remembered for decades to come, or whether she is just another talent caught up in the midst of hype and nostalgia, and mercy to a fickle public, hungry for a new sound that is never quite as new as they might like to think. Little Boots is currently finishing her album and preparing for its release, with plans to spend the summer playing festivals. She heads to Texas this month to play massive music conference/ festival South By South West, and pops to Bristol on 3 April for a gig at the Carling Academy. myspace.com/littlebootsmusic littlebootsmusic.co.uk Words: Dave Kendall magazine | 13

He’s managed to stamp his mark on the graff scene, achieving success by being commissioned to do artwork for Ian Brown’s latest album. 247 caught up with him to find out just what makes him tick… What’s your preferred method of graffiti – stencil or freehand? It’s always been stencils, ever since coming across some of Banksy’s early pieces in Bristol in the mid to late 90s, he definitely planted the seed. I love the immediacy of stencils, it’s hit and run. Who inspires you? Guys like Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Dolk, Mantis and Dan Wiltz are big sources of inspiration to me in the graff world. I used to skate a lot so deck artwork by Wes Humpston, VCJ, Andy Jenkins, Mike Hill and Todd Bratrud has always been part of my subconscious. In graphic design I look up to Shilo, The Designers Republic (RIP), Universal Everything and The Ronin. Also illustrators like Hydro 74, Guy McKindly and Adam Haynes are doing some nice work. Other forms of creativity also feed my work, including musical artists like Gill Scott Heron and High Contrast; spoken word poets like Saul Williams and even stand up comics like Bill Hicks (RIP). They all help to drive the thought processes.

How does your artistic background affect the way you work as a graff artist? I went to art college then specialised in graphic design. The principles of both graphics and street art definitely overlap. As a graphic designer you learn how to distil an idea down until you reach the core of what you are trying to say. Also it taught me how to set up multiple coloured stencils. The first piece I ever did was two colours and it’s basically the same process as setting up screenprint artwork. What’s the most exciting thing that has happened to you during your graff career? My favourite music artist is Ian Brown so the night before one of his gigs I did a stencil of his face on the stage door. Apparently he saw it, loved it and tried to track me down! Eventually we did hook up and it became the artwork illustration for his latest album, The World Is Yours. Off the back of that I did the artwork for the two singles from that album, Illegal Attacks and Sister Rose. That was a massive buzz, collaborating with someone I have so much respect for. Where would you most like to be in ten years time? Teaching my son the street art, ha ha! I want to just keep doing my thing but expand into new modes of expression like animating my pieces, maybe even a short film. I also want to get into t-shirt design and start my own label. Basically I’m just going to keep filling the void!

Soul Life on the Barbican in Plymouth is currently showing/selling selected pieces of Fillthevoid’s work.

@ fillthevoid.co.uk We have an exclusive Fillthevoid hand stencilled original on hardboard to give away to one lucky reader. To enter the competition, email 247@outofhand.co.uk with VOID in the subject line and tell us how you’d fill the void, in no more than 50 words. Comp closes 31 March. No Hassle

(!K7 Records) Bit of a silly name, but this is an album of laidback grooves, using real instruments and digital techniques and created by Richard Dorfmeister (of Kruder fame) and Rupert Huber. There’s nothing here for the chin-strokers: ‘No Hassle’ is an unpretentious album, and not in any way ‘experimental’ or up its own arse. You either want to chill, or you don’t. Arash Torabi

A band eager to encourage the cyclical nature of trends, Nebraska’s Ladyfinger (ne) celebrate the twin peaks of pre-grunge a la Janes Addiction and post-hardcore a la Bluetip, Pilot To Gunner and Jawbox, Various artists which could easily have ended in pale (compiled by Amorphous Androgynous) comparison but actually sounds pretty A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble fucking lovely for the most part. The artists selected span 4 decades, and many styles are represented here: folk, space Ruarri Joseph rock, ambient, funk, sitars and the freakBoth Sides Of The Coin out/totally-lost-it kind of grooves. Tommy (Pip Productions) Graham’s ‘Sahajiya’ is one of my favourites. There are more well-know names here too, like Donovan, Tim Buckley & Miles Davis. Wriggling free from Atlantic Records’ Proper head gear. artistically stifling grip, our Ruarri has now Arash Torabi set about indulging in his woozy, acoustic whims, retaining Jack Johnson’s irritating nonchalance but breathing Westcountry Original Soundtrack grace and melancholy into its lungs. The Notorious B.I.G was a genius rapper. Independence suits you, lad. His humour, wordplay and ability to tell a Backbone story have never been equalled. Most of the tracks here are by Biggie himself, with some great choices: ‘Kick in the Door’ and ‘Warning’- B.I.G at his best, and a shit one, Left Side Brain the painfully lengthy ‘Notorious Thugs’, Collider featuring Bone Thugs-N-Harmon. Luckily (Sugar Shack) they’ve also included his awesome rare first single ‘Party and Bullshit’, but I can’t listen to his son rapping along to ‘One Bristolians, Left Side Brain, have been More Chance’- it’s too creepy. However, working hard not to tread in anyone else’s Biggie fans will appreciate the 3 previously Britrock footsteps. J Dilla

Dillanthology 1 (Rapster Records) When the sad news of the iconic hip hop producer’s death reached people, the outpouring of grief was unprecedented, the internet was awash with slogans, t-shirts, club nights etc all wanting to pay their respect. For those of you unaware of J Dilla’s greatness this is a great place to start, standout tracks are hard to choose as every one is so precious, Common’s “The Light” has been bootlegged and re rubbed so much but nothing can touch the simple beauty of the original. Quality hip hop with non jiggy MCs and an untouchable sound. For those who need to know, this is the place to get to know. Aldo Vanucci

Random Hand Inhale / Exhale

(Rebel Alliance) About five years ago, the nation had pretty much written off ska-punk as a cringeworthy, sonic faux-pas – probably due to a slew of truly bad purveyors of the sub-genre. West Yorkshire bruisers, Random Hand, may have single-handedly resuscitated the beast from its marginal slumber with a sophomore album that tags a huge metallic rock punch onto its skank’n’roll; resulting in the kind of mash-up that would satiate the appetites of Capdown and Agnostic Front fans alike. Lauryn Hill

The Miseducation Of (Ruff House Records)

This 1998 album stands as one of the greatest modern soul albums ever recorded. With contributions from Carlos Santana, D’Angelo, Mary J Blige and more Lauryn created a deep and meaningful album. Using doo-wop backing vocals and lush instrumentation over boom-bap beats with a lyrical eye on the uplifting elements of gospel and the poignant reflection of soul music. Every song is worth a mention which is rare, and she manages to be devout without ever being proselytizing. SUPERDUPERDAN!

DEMOS Friendship – “DEMO”

Nice indie, guitar based rock, pop tunes on this CD from South London but the production is god-awful. My ears started to hurt terribly after track three and I had to turn it down to a whisper… I’m sure performing in the live arena they rock it, but as a home listening product, this particular demo CD needs A LOT of studio production help! OUCH! myspace.com/thegoodfriendship

Mr & Mrs Swing – “Tribute To Mr Kaye”

Bouncing 1920’s brass lines and sub basslines in a “wop wop wop” fashion sit jolly over hip hop beats on the track “Daddy” which at times is a little bit too daft and rather like an early Mickey Mouse cartoon soundtrack. Track two is exactly the same and a little too comical to be played to any serious club crowd. They have previously put together a self-released 12” that I highly recommend. Find it at their web address mr-and-mrs-swing.com

Balura - “DEMO”

Midsomer Norton is a tiny town near Bristol where I met Balura, a lovely lady with a good spirit, and turns out… a splendid voice! Track two “Dark Side” has the makings of an early smokers delight from Massive Attack with a superb tinny snare drum break. As a whole this CD and the music contained within is tight and inoffensive… myspace.com/balura

Lyra Fox – “DEMO”

Another female vocalist, and with a porn star name like that you can’t fail to be intrigued. The music is all very theatrical and sounds like an OST (original sound track) from a stage show to be honest. Lyra’s vocals are not too bad but not always popping the correct note from the off-shoot! The tracks themselves sound like demos from a fancy Casio keyboard and lack crunch, fatness and soul for me. myspace.com/lyrafox

Northbound – “Nowhere Near”

A full length album demo comprising chill out fodder from yester-year. It works, but it sounds a little dated. There’s lots of “new world” flavours, gypsy and Arab chord changes that keep it slightly frightening, which I love! After a five or so tracks there’s a definate similarity between tunes though… myspace.com/northboundorchestra

Oncartel – “DEMO”

A tight and established latin, fusion band here. With the drummer leading-the-ass off them the horns and bass twiddle and fiddle along perfectly in time with him. They are without doubt VERY good musicians but for me it just lacks balls. I’m not a massive fan of the latin, afro sound and this is touching cloth in that genre. I give these chaps a stern clap, but with a VERY straight face… yspace.com/oncartel

Clarity – “Propaganda Pulse”

Fourteen hip hop tracks here written for the MC I’d say. He’s got some stuff to get off his chest for sure. The tracks plod gently along and the MC doesn’t offend, rarely swearing or mentioning how big his willy might be! It doesn’t stand out from a lot of other hip hop/MC demos but they are pleasant and have passion for the genre… not bad. myspace.com/unpassa

Soulslept – “DEMO”

The amazingly, crystal clear production made me realize my ears are pretty battered here… It’s chill-out, ambient gear. This guy has perfect pitch for making synthetic tunes and some pretty interesting rhythms too. Soulslept is one professional sounding dude! Think early Ninja Tune but passed through a sound font converter or similar... LOVELY! myspace.com/soulslept

Leizaboy – “DEMO”

Fresh from my journey to Timisoara, Romania for a DJ set, I was handed this CD. Leizaboy is a master of electric funk, hip hop, breaks and does it very well indeed. Working as a sound designer for computer games during the day and DJing during the eve he manages to squeeze in a little production time for himself and comes up trumps with this 12 track demo of tunes. With some lengthy intros and a similar sound and structure to each track there is massive potential for a club banger in here! A Skills, Smoove, Good Groove and similar artists watch out! PROPER JOB! myspace.com/djleizaboy

Carquemaezla – “DEMO”

Fourteen hip hop tracks here written for the MC I’d say. He’s got some stuff to get off his chest for sure. The tracks plod gently along and the MC doesn’t offend, rarely swearing or mentioning how big his willy might be! It doesn’t stand out from a lot of other hip hop/MC demos but they are pleasant and have passion for the genre… not bad. myspace.com/carquemaezlamusic

The story is set in an alternate reality where superheroes exist, Richard Nixon is still president, Vietnam was won by the South, and tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union are at an all-time high. The vigilante Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) is investigating the murder of a former superhero, the Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and uncovers a plot to discredit and murder various heroes. Rorschach discovers a far wider-ranging conspiracy involving his colleagues’ past which could completely change the course of history. This is film is likely to split opinion between those who are obsessed with the graphic novel, and those who want to enjoy the pleasures of a more simplified film.

Jonathan Demme, starring Anne Hathaway, Debra Winger, Rosemarie Dewitt. 2008/US/113 mins When recovering addict Kym (Hathaway) returns to her family home for her sister’s wedding she brings her personal troubles which re-ignite family conflicts. A long way from Hathaway’s Bride Wars, this is a refreshing variation on the well-worn theme. Demme produces a freeform ensemble drama that is rich, distinctive and genuinely emotional.

PATRICK WOLF. Gloucester Guildhall. 23 Eastgate Street. GL1 1NS. Patrick Wolf is one of the UK’s most compelling musical artists. Sometimes dark and twisted, sometimes radiant and optimistic, his avant-garde electro-folk is both intimate and epic and brims with emotional passion, sinister storytelling and mythological legend. His albums ‘Lycanthropy’, ‘Wind in the Wires’ and 2007’s breakthrough release ‘The Magic Position’ have seen him build a massive and loyal global fanbase, and this will be taken to new heights in 2009 with his new album ‘Battle’, which invites fans to become shareholders in the release. Patrick’s bold sonic statements are echoed in the music of Klaxons, MGMT and newcomers Empire of the Sun, and his blurring of the experimental and the mainstream makes him a unique and essential voice. £12.50 ADV, £10.50 door. 7.30pm. 01452 503050. gloucester. gov.uk/guildhall
