Surfing:
the heart of Relentless Boardmasters
By Rob Barber Rob is the editorial assistant at Carve Surfing Magazine and the editor of ThreeSixty bodyboarding magazine. He is also the director of the Rip Curl English Surfing Federation Surf School based on Headland Road, over looking the Boardmasters event.
The Relentless Boardmasters entries are hotting up! With 2000 valuable World Qualifying Series points to be won the field is looking impressive with a strong contingent or Brit and international pro’s making up the field of 96 surfers. The prize purse of $120,000 USD will be attracting the top surfers from all over the world. Along side the short board contest will be a longboard event sponsored by Skin Dog Surfboards which is expected to attract the cream of the European crop. The international surf stars to watch out for include former event winner Renalto Galvao from Brazil, Nathan ‘Noodles’ Webster from Australia and Marc Lacomare from France. The British charge will be led, as always, by Russ Winter, Reubyn Ash, Reuben Pearce, Alan Stokes and Sam Lamiroy. The 4th — 8th of August will see the surfers do battle in one of Europe’s ultimate coliseum’s; Fistral beach, Newquay. With a great summer of swell so far the organisers hope for a re-run of last years epic conditions which peaked with perfect 6 — 8 foot waves, some of the best for any European event on the qualifying tour last year. Local surfers are reporting excellent sand banks at north Fistral at the moment so it’s just a matter of a bit of luck with the swell and wind conditions.
Alan Stokes Sam Lamiroy
Sam has returned from a magazine photo trip and gruelling winter training session in Indo, where his surfing has stepped up yet another level. A past winner of the BPSA tour, Sam has been a force in world competitive surfing for the last 15 years. He shows a great economy of movement and has a super charged arsenal of moves to pull out the big scores when he needs them. Add to this the vast experience that he has garnered through one of the most extensive travel schedules of any of the Brit pro’s and he is a real force to be reckoned with when the waves are good and north Fistral is pumping.
Called Stokesy to his face and Golden Balls behind his back, Alan Stokes is the white toothed, tan skinned, sponsors dream from Newquay. He doesn’t just look the part though, he surfs incredibly well and is currently showing some of the best form of his career. He won last years UKPS Tour and in early July this year took out the Sri Lankan Champion of Champions event at Aragum Bay. Alan has just launched his own board shape with board sponsor Quiver. The model, named ‘The Stoca-pop’ has received great reviews and was designed with British waves in mind, definitely worth a look. Stokesy is the highest ranked British surfer on the World Qualifying Series world tour and after competing on the Brazilian leg he has returned to Europe with a mission to crack the top 100 and receive a high enough seeding to qualify for the Hawaiian leg at the end of the year. So the 2000 points available are critical to his campaign.
Jayce Robinson
Mark Harris
With invaluable local knowledge and home support the Brit’s are out to create some big upsets at this years event. Check out the British surfers to watch:
RussellWinter
Having won the event in the past Russell Winter is Britain’s great white hope for another finals birth this year. Born in London but having grown up surfing Fistral all summer and training all winter in Barbados Russ is the most successful European surfer, at the age of 34, he’s beaten the likes of Kelly Slater and Mark Occhilupo in the past. Russ is a tenacious competitor that revels in beach break conditions, gaining speed through sections where other’s sink. We spoke to Russ who confirmed that after a slight injury to his back earlier this year he is now fitter than ever. He gave an impressive performance at the first UKPST event of the season, the SaltRock Open at Croyde where he coasted to victory ahead of a stacked field of shredders.

Reuben Ash
Passed Junior European Champion Reuben Ash spends most of his summers down in France competing and training in the more consistent waves of Hossegor and Biarritz. After being voted as the joint most respected surfer under 21-years-old, in the Carve magazine Peer Poll, he has lived up to the large expectations that were heaped on him. He regularly blows everyone away with his progressive free surfing displays and incredible video clips. Reuben’s new school style of surfing fits the judging criteria perfectly, with fast explosive skateboard inspired aerial antics. His forehand air reverse is the most consistent of any British surfer: he can pull them on any size wave.
After an epic win at the Protest English Nationals event in May Jayce has had a roller coaster ride due to picking up an injury to the sole of his foot when his board stabbed him during a training session at Fistral. That injury ruled him out of the Sri Lanka contest and cost him a lot of water time in the run up to the Boardmasters. Those that have seen him surf on his return to the water are reporting that he hasn’t lost any of his form though. The St Ives based surf star has a new school bag of surf trickery that will fit the new judging criteria perfectly; high risk moves equal high scores.
Mark ‘Egor’ Harris is the Fistral lifeguard with the tightly coiled blonde afro hair style. He’s won numerous British titles, the UKPS Tour and when ever Fistral is firing he is the man in the driving seat. Egor’s got a unique style of swooping turns and flow between moves, his surfing is fast and fluid. Harris has had quite a year, having been one of the first surfers to challenge the Scottish mutant wave: Ten’s. The wave comes out of deep water and unloads on to a shallow rock shelf at such speed that Egor and co had to be towed in to it on a jet ski. Hours each day spent surveying the Fistral line up as he keeps his eye on the water users have given him a knowledge of the wave rivalled by none. An incredible advantage over his competitors.

Saturday 7 August Chase and Status: MAIN STAGE This London based
Dubstep / D’n’B duo, Chase and Status are everywhere at the moment, packing out everywhere they play (anyone remember the Eden Project back in May?) Everyone knows the tune, End Credits featuring Plan B and they recently supported the Prodigy in Milton Keynes, which they stated was their best ever gig so far, let’s see if they can top it in Newquay. Their new single, Let you Go featuring Mali is out on 15 August.
The music festival element of the Boardmasters festival is the biggest music event of the year in Cornwall. Now in its 5th year, there are over seven stages across the site, including a new Residential Dance tent for local DJ’s to show people what it’s all about. With 123 acts playing across two days, there is a HUGE amount of music to see and hear, here is our recommended highlights of bands you really can’t afford to miss.
Leftfield: MAIN STAGE It’s been ten years since this dance
outfit was last on the road, and the shows they have done so far this summer have been awesome. They were pioneers in the fields of intelligent dance music and progressive house, being among the first to fuse house music with dub and reggae. They were among the first electronic musicians to incorporate live guest vocalists, along with The Chemical Brothers and Underworld and their performance at Boardmasters includes a full band and huge production – time for a step back in time, not to be missed.
Crazy P: RELENTLESS STAGE Electronic band, otherwise
Friday 6 August
know as Crazy Penis incorporate a sound of soul music, disco and house music We loved their old name (which they shortened in 2008 to help ‘progress’ their career) and they are just fun on stage. Their album, stop, space, return is out now.
Newton Faulkner: MAIN STAGE Always a popular man down in this neck of the woods, he is a simple act of one man and a guitar but he is simply awesome/ He writes great acoustic tracks, but his live shows are an intermit affair, even on the big stage and he knows how to keep the crowd entertained - especially with his alternative covers. Newton co-headlines with, blues man Seasick Steve, who said “I was chilling out with Newton after playing this festival in France and we both realised we were playing together in Cornwall and were getting real excited about it. “I really like Newton, he’s so amazing – I love guys like him who can go out on stage all alone.” His current album, Rebuilt by Humans is out now.
Plan B: MAIN STAGE
Aka Ben Drew came to our attention in Michael Caine’s film, Harry Brown back in 2008 and through his collaboration on End Credits with Chase and Status, which hit the Top 10 without any warning. We love the fact his image is totally different to his music, dressing down as a hoodie, and then singing soulful motown numbers. His current album, The Defamation of Strickland Banks’ is the sound of Motown, Stax and obscure Northern Soul, filtered through the grit of contemporary East London. It is Smokey Robinson miraculously fused with Eminem. It’s an urban tale, the story of a man who finds success hard to handle and then hits rock bottom. A sweet soul morsel with a razorsharp edge. Watch out to see if he makes a ‘surprise’ appearance with Chase and Status later on too.
Ruarri Joseph:VIEW STAGE After a brief flirtation with
Atlantic Records, Ruarri is back on home turf, releasing music on his own label and doing what he wants, when he wants. Acoustic solo artist, he’s sort of Cornwall’s answer to Newton Faulkner, but more raw. His new album, Shoulder to the Wheel is out now.
Gallows: RELENTLESS STAGE Punk Rock all the way
as this band round things off in the Vans tent. Expect the moss pit to be at its height when they play. Their second album, Grey Britain is still doing the rounds and they continue to perform loads in both the UK & US. Hard and worth it.
6 | BOARDMASTERS 2010
The full line-up is at www.relentelessboardmasters.com. Tickets are still available for the festival from www.relentlessboardmasters.com or on the gate at Watergate Bay.
Residential Dance Tent
Showcasing all the unsung local DJ’s who play at and promote numerous nights across Cornwall and Devon, this is an area for all dance heads, with a range of styles including D’n’B, dubstep, house, reggae, breaks, electro, hard dance and trance. DJ’s playing include Mr Nice, Re-Defeat, Will Streetwise, Palm, Crissy Criss, Necta Selecta, Jac the Disco, Tommie Quick, Hong Kong Ping Pong, Pop Clique and many more.
247 Signing Tent Come and meet your favourite bands and artists at the SIGNING TENT
exclusive 247 Signing Tent, which will be open during from 3pm – 8pm on Friday & Saturday at Watergate Bay. Located next to the Media Tent, acts including Xavier Rudd and Leftfield will be ready and waiting to meet you, the full signing schedule will be posted on site and at the entrance when you arrive! Remember to bring your camera!
Essential Info:
Gates open at 11am to the music festival on Fri and 10am on Sat, and the festival finishes at 12.45am each night. You can drive to the site and park in the official car parks (for £5 / £8 for both nights – all proceeds to Surfers Against Sewage) or jump on to one of the free shuttle busses running from Newquay Bus Station in central Newquay direct to the site. Or if you’re lucky enough to have a camping ticket, your pitched right next door to the festival and can walk over! If you are under the age of 16 an adult or guardian of 18 years or over must accompany you. No alcohol can be taken into the festival, and there are cash machines on site. Mobile phone reception is patchy on site at the best of times (this is Cornwall after all) so with the added pressure of 12,000 people all using their mobiles at the same time, don’t rely on it working.

BMX
Mini Ramp Comp After a few years of insanely popular BMX vert demos at Boadmasters, it became clear that, with only the surfing and skating, a BMX event was needed. Last year the mini ramp comp was born and it didn’t disappoint: over 40 of the UK’s top riders descended upon the Beach Village on Fistral, pulling sick, crowdpleasing tricks, one after another.
Last year’s champ Last year saw 23-year-old Ben Wallace take the BMX crown with his fierce winning runs and epic fakie double tail whip. One of the top BMXers in Europe, Ben invented the barrel roll and the double downside tail whip - tricks we look forward to seeing him pull at Boardmasters 2010, while he defends his title.
Skate Skate
Vert event
Boardmasters is home to Europe’s highest profile vert skate event, where you can see the biggest names in vert skating compete for part of the fat $20,000 prize purse. While Relentless Boardmasters has it’s roots in surfing, vert skating has been an integral part of the festival for the last ten years. Last year’s Vans Summer Session was the best to date, with top US skaters Alex Perelson and Neal Hendrix even travelling across the pond to compete with Europe’s best. Our American friends will be back this year to face a bigger challenge from the UK shredders Sam Beckett and Sam Bosworth, who’ve been skating high and hard in the run up to the event. Expect chaos.
