EDITORS LETTER: Wow, it’s nearly time to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee! While I’m not exactly writing this wearing a twinset and pearls, sipping tea from a commemorative china cup and saucer, we do think 60 years of The Queen’s reign deserves some recognition. So, I hope you like the themed issue. Personally, I’m stoked that there’s so much extra stuff going on in the South West this month thanks to the Jubilee – see page 8, and I’m lusting after the Anna Lou hair crown featured in our retail therapy section on page 20. Our fashion pages also give a nod to the jubilee, in 247 style of course – check it out on page 21. It’s not all about Queenie though – as well as doing some redesign work on the magazine this month, we’ve also got some great features for you. South West lovers, The Pigeon Detectives talk to us about their tour this month on page 14, we interview Grime MC and rapper; Wrentch 32 on page 12 and we meet singer/songwriter; Jack Wallen who ‘s first gig was supporting James Morrison on page 16. Rachael CONTENTS ILLUSTRATION This month’s Diamond Jubilee inspired illustration has been designed by Plymouth-based artist, Coz Kilbride, A.K.A SKILLMATIK. He’s currently his own art and design business, SKILLMATIK and says: “I’m basically doing what I love doing: illustration and graphic design, with my own little street art edge to it. So, that’s everything from commissioned one off images, illustrations, murals through to logos, branding, art direction and everything in-between.” Coz has been drawing for a long time – his mum says he was born with a pen in his hand – he loves it as it calms me down and keeps him focused. “It’s almost certainly saved my life,” he says earnestly. His plans for the future are to grow SKILLMATIK into a cool little business, get involved in amazing projects and realize some of his own ideas. Chase & Status have been confirmed as the latest acts to be headlining an Eden Session on Wednesday July 4. Special guest on the evening will be Labrinth. The London duo, otherwise known as Saul Milton and Will Kennard, are returning to the Eden Project, Cornwall having headlined the sell out Eden Arts Cafe and 247 Magazine promoted Rumble in the Jungle party in May 2010. Chase & Status are known for their big-name collaborations and have featured artists such as Tinie Tempah, Dizzee Rascal, Delilah and fellow Eden Sessions headliner Plan B. They are due to release their as yet untitled third studio album this year, following their acclaimed debut More Than Alot, released in 2008, and 2011’s platinum-selling UK number two No More Idols. Last year, they won both Best Live Act and Best Producer gongs at the Drum & Bass Awards, following up 2009’s triple win in the Best Producer, Best Album (More Than Alot) and Best Track (Take Me Away) categories. Holifair 2012 If you’re looking for a fun, affordable and family friendly festival, in Cornwall, then you’ll love Holifair. This three-day festival – August 3-5, boasts live music ranging from folk, gypsy, punk, blues and reggae through to dance, as well as workshops, cabaret, kids area, wellbeing area. South West Olympic Torch Relay The 8,000-mile route of the 2012 Olympic torch relay will be taken within an hour’s journey of 95% of the UK population as it passes through 1,018 villages, towns and cities. The relay starts in Penzance on May 19, travelling through Cornwall and into Devon, as far as Plymouth. On Sunday 20, the relay continues through Devon, going as far as Exeter, then on May 21 goes through Somerset. The torch will be carried by torchbearers throughout the tour, who on parts of the journey will carry the flame on horseback, by bicycle, tram, steam train and even zip wire! Wretch 32 has had an incredible year: working with chart toppers Chase & Status, Example and Mark Ronson, even 50 Cent has blogged about him. 27-year-old Wretch 32 has come a long way since freestyling into a makeshift mic with his cousin. This month, the Grime MC and rapper heads to the South West, as part of his UK Tour. 247’s Amy Berry talks to Wretch about being a bad boy, and going global… When did you first get interested in music?
How do you feel about the current rap scene in the UK?
I guess I have always had an interest from my Dad, what with him being a reggae D.J. However I discovered rap a little later around the age of 13 or 14.
I think it’s a healthy scene at the moment. I’m seeing a lot of artists that came from the same scene as I did doing so well. There is a lot of talented youth with so much potential to make it far in the game.
When did you start rapping yourself? It was real late, when I was 15/16. It started out just me and my cousin mucking about freestyling through some headphones that we used as a Mic, by plugging the jack into the microphone socket.
Where would you like to be in five years time?
Who inspires you?
Are you looking forward to heading to the South West this month? Have you ever been before?
There are so many from Michael Jackson, Bob Marley and 2 Pac to the UK artists that I could potentially see in my neck of the woods like So Solid, Dizzee Rascal and Sway.
Hopefully still in the game, cracking on with doing music with a bigger fan base that extends to Europe, America... worldwide!
Yeah I’ve been before a couple times and the crowd is real energetic. Most definitely looking forward to it.
Where did the name Wretch 32 come from?
What can we expect from your show?
Wretch was a name that my mum gave me when I was younger when I used to be bad, she used to call me a wretched child! 3 and 2 are my lucky numbers, I thought I would join the good with bad and make it Wretch three two (32).
Expect an amazing show which will entertain you throughout and get you jumping. I am confident to say if you haven’t seen me perform before, and are feeling uncertain, and if you should part from your hard earned money, ask a friend, go on the internet, and read the comments from real people and then decide!
How did you get into the music scene and get your big break? It started with us kids on the block having more time than things to do which led to mucking about and rapping to each other. Then as we got better we took it more serious and went from the block to spiting on Pirate Radio Heat FM as Combination Camp. Getting my big break was down to my manager and A&R Twin as well as Ministry of Sound for believing in me.
What advice would you give to aspiring rappers in the South West? Keep on the grind and just remember nothing comes easy so you have to work hard to achieve your ambitions, and use all the methods you can to promote yourself like the internet, YouTube and social networking sites etc. See Wretch 32 live at The Lemongrove, Exeter plus special guests on May 18 or at The Stannary, Falmouth on May 19. Summer by the sea with The Pigeon Detectives The Pigeon Detectives are headed to Exeter, Plymouth and Falmouth as part of their Summer By The Sea tour, Rachael D’Cruze catches up with indie rocker frontman, Matt Bowman, before they board the bus… With two Top 5 albums and five Top 40 singles tucked under their collective arm, The Pigeon Detectives, who are currently recording their forth album, clearly know a thing or two about longevity. They know a thing or two about making the most out of life too – back from another storming, sweaty and eventful European tour, the five-piece have had a tremendous idea: their self-explanatory Summer By The Sea tour. “This tour was the band’s idea – it wasn’t put to us by management. We’re looking forward to returning to lots of the venues we cut our teeth on,” says frontman Bowman enthusiastically. Bowman goes on to say that there is only so many times a band can get excited about playing the big Manchester-Birmingham-Leeds-London circuit before they need to get out and play ‘quirkier’ towns, where The Pigeon Detectives find they get a better response to their engaging guitarled indie rock anyway. As you’d expect, the South West features heavily on their seaside tour (well, we have got the best beaches) with them playing Plymouth, Exeter and Falmouth. So where do Bowman and the boys, who hail from Rothwell, West Yorkshire, like to chill when they are in the South West? “Without a doubt Newquay’s Fistral Bay. We played a gig there at a surf comp, on the beach, went surfing the day before, watched the comp and saw some girls in bikinis,” he says. Fair shout. We spoke to Bowman a few weeks before he and the other four lads boarded the tour bus and they were working hard – in the studio for 10am everyday recording their forth, yet-to-be-named, album, due

for release this autumn. The fact that The Pigeon Detectives have stuck around this long is a testament to the boys in our fickle music climate. It hasn’t all been plain sailing though. After releasing their first two albums in quick succession, praised for their sparkle and Bowman’s catchy lyrics and boyish charm, their third album, Up Guards and at ‘Em, was written and recorded over the space of 18 months and while still doing incredibly well, received some negative reviews too. “We discuss this quite a lot as a band. It’s a case of your damned if you do and damned if you don’t: you can’t do a carbon copy of your previous material but people fall out of love with you if you do something too different and you get slammed by the press if you don’t change,” says Bowman earnestly. He goes on to say that The Pigeon Detectives have a policy of only putting out songs that the band themselves would listen to in their bedroom, which sounds like a good’un.

… g n i c u d o r t n I n e l l a W k c a J The 21-year-old singer-songwriter from Cambourne talks to Rachael D’Cruze about supporting James Morrison, his Maida Vale experience and recording an E.P with no cash... Originally from Southend, Essex, Jack Wallen, now 21, moved to Camborne in 2000. “I’m pretty happy about that; I love Cornwall,” says the singer-songwriter, who’s spent the 18 months or so playing around the county, after playing his first ever gig, in 2010, supporting James Morrison at the Hall of Cornwall, no less. “I had a CD of an original song that I recorded on a friend’s computer, really shoddy stuff that we did for fun. You had to physically hold the mic lead in place to get it to work… I sent it in as part of a competition to support James at the Hall for Cornwall – I was too embarrassed to do it off my own back, but my girlfriend encouraged me,” explains James, who tells us his experience was invaluable and really grew his confidence. “It gave me a taste of what I could achieve, what I can strive for,” he adds. Early this year Jack was invited to attended the BBC Introducing Musicians’ Masterclass at Abbey Road and Maida Vale studios in London. Talking about his experience he says: “I was expecting to leave the masterclass disheartened. I cynically thought that it was the industry professionals’ job to beat us down, tell us that we had no idea how hard it was to ‘make it’, and to question my own ambition. But they were great. I left with the feeling that as long as I aim for a self-defined goal, which for me is to simply put food on the table by doing something that I love, then I can achieve it, and failure isn’t an option.” Jack came away from the masterclass motivated and with lots of ideas. As a direct result this March saw Jack record his debut EP live. He explains that without the funds to pay for studio time, or even half-decent home-recording equipment, a live recording was the best feasible idea of moving his career forward. “I sat on the idea for a little while, and it grew into a full scale event. In one night, I planned to record the E.P, film the set, get photographs, invite press and local music promoters, and have an audience of people that have been turning up at some of my gigs over the last year, as well as friends. This could give me a full press kit, and give

everyone something to take away from it for themselves,” says Jack who held his event at The Melting Pot Cafe in Redruth, where he was joined by a band for the first time Harry Harding and Chris Jones. He also invited other local musicians to play too. The money raised is going solely to the cut of the discs, allowing Jack to pay off the band, recording, and others involved through sales of the E.P, when the money comes in. “Expect an imperfect but raw recording, that I hope adds to the charm and atmosphere, and is not too detrimental to the sound. Stuff nowadays is so overproduced anyway, I’d rather it sounded real,” says Jack, who’s aiming to release it at the end of this month. Jack’s easy melody and honest lyrics make him a easy singer-songwriter to warm to – his earnest character shining through his music. He could well go on to follow in the footsteps of South West hero Ruarri Joseph, of whom Jack is incidentally a fan. He’s also admires Ray LaMontagne, Colin Hay and John Martyn, as well as Billy Joel – whom he grew up listening to. We asked Jack what his goals were outside of putting food on the table, through music: “To write songs that other musicians respect, as well as the listening audience. Just one song that a fellow musician says; ‘I wish I wrote that’ about. And, I want to drive through Europe playing at all the stops. And America. No one has to know who I am... Music is a universal language, and I want to share it with as many people as possible.”

Calenick Street, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 2SF 01872 858171 My knowledge of Greek food is pretty much nonexistent, so on entering Real Greek it was a relief when the staff were more than willing to make recommendations and talk us through the menu. They have a good selection of meat, vegetarian and fish based starters like koftethes (meatballs), dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) and Atherina (Deep fried white bait). Unable to decide on just one dish we were recommended a platter to share. They can make these to suit your preferences if you know exactly what you want, or they can create a selection with a bit of everything. I was particularly impressed with the Boreki Cheese, which was filo pastry filled with feta and parsley: very tasty. For my main dish, I decided to go for the classic Greek dish, Moussaka, layers of potatoes, aubergines, courgettes and minced meat, topped with béchamel sauce and grated cheese. A very comforting dish, and very filling, but I was a little disappointed with the overriding taste of the potatoes. My guest went with the Kotopoulo Yemisto, chicken breast stuffed with feta, sun dried tomatoes, spinach and pine nuts: a delicious combination.

The Grecian Taverna
The proprietor kindly selected a couple of platters based on the Greek theme, and his choices were most impressive, very colourful and varied in taste. Several of these were on display, for customers to choose from. We had hummus, tabula, stuffed vine leaves, aubergine, bean salad, falafel and pita bread, to name just a few.
While the interior is contemporary rather than traditional Greek, the extensive menu mimicks what you’d get in a restaurant in Greece – I’m a fan of Greek food, so this impressed me. The Grecian Taverna has an À la Carte menu and extensive wine list, they also do a Weekday Set Menu, with loads of choice, where you get two courses for £9.95. We opted for the bargain deal. The friendly staff (who didn’t know I was reviewing) were happy to help with our choices.

It’s set out like a deli with a seating area, and it’s very refreshing to find somewhere that serves this type of food, which is quite common in London, but not so much in these parts.
Everything here is freshly prepared, and it tastes like it. The green salad is definitely worth raving about: it includes black olives, minced carrots, rice and chives. New Horizon embraces versatility, with plenty on the menu besides these delicious platters, including continental or vegetarian breakfast, omelettes, falafel burgers and even roast chicken on Sundays…

From the outside it’s unassuming – just a doorway really with stairs leading down into the restaurant. Don’t let this put you off – it’s a gem.
To start I had Taramosalada (a traditional cod roe dish made with mashed potato) and Laura had Tzatziki (a yogurt-based meze dish). Both were served with lots of warm homemade pitta and beautifully presented. They were both delicious and fresh: despite the generous portion sizes we polished off the lot. For my main course I had grilled filleted sea bass, with rice and Greek salad. The fish was cooked to perfection – no skin, no bones – light, tasty and fresh. The salad was complete with lashing of feta and again delicious. Even the fragrant rice was Moorish. Laura’s huge Mousaka (made with spiced lamb mince, creamy sauce and potato) was perfect and without overriding taste of potato. Breakin’ the South West As the ninth annual Breakin’ Convention is coming to Plymouth this month 247’s Hannah Giles hooked up with some local dance bods, to get the low down on the break dancing scene in the South West Breakin’ Convention is the biggest international festival of Hip Hop Dance Theatre in the world, providing a platform for hot new talent and world acclaimed dance crews to showcase their fresh new moves. The five day festival takes place at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre before Breakin’ Convention embarks on a month long tour across the country, including two dates at Plymouth Theatre Royal on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 May. Expect to see performances from local crews, DJ Demos, live aerosol art, as well as the opportunity to take part in freestyle dance sessions and workshops with top international artists such as ILL-Abilities, Clash 66, and Vagabond Crew.

I had about four lessons, and then I started watching videos and taught myself.” Gravity has been together for a year, and the dance crew has nine members. “We started at Caradon [Street Dance] but we wanted to go to competitions and stuff so we started up a crew. I choreographed a load of stuff and then we started going to competitions like UDO South West, and UDO British championships. We then went to Portsmouth and did the South Coast Championships and came fifth, and qualified for this year’s world championships,” says Dean. Trashdollys, a dance company based in Exeter, will also be on the main stage. TrashDollys was formed by Holly Durant and Daniel Martin at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2005. In 2010 a performance opportunity arose and Sam Amos joined them, and shortly after, a decision was made to work together on a full time basis. Dancing has been Sam’s life since a very early age. “At the age of nine, I made a last minute decision to go along to a Breaking class which was taking place in my hometown. I went along with a completely open mind. Little did I know at this point

Dean explains: “we auditioned just on the off chance and got through, and now we’re performing on the main stage.” For Dean, dancing is a family affair: “I got into dancing because my little brother and little sister started dance. They started by doing disco and street, and I ended up watching my brother and trying

that dancing would become an all-consuming passion, and eventually my career. I can relate to dance, I understand it and completely appreciate everything it stands for,’ he explains. As Sam has been brought up in the world of Breaking, he’s known of Breakin’ Convention for years. “With TrashDollys style and overall approach to performance, we felt it may suit what Breakin’ Convention stood for. Fortunately, our audition went down well with Jonzi and the rest of the panel, which has resulted in being offered a slot at Plymouth,” he enthuses. Toby G and his wife Jo started Street Factory Studios seven years ago. It’s been three years since they got their own building and now see 100 plus members come through their doors six days a week. Street Factory is something that dance teacher Toby wanted to get up and running for a long time. “It’s all about giving back to the youngsters in the community, keeping them positive and healthy. It’s a place where kids can come and chill out and learn some dancing – it’s like an escape place. We run all dance classes: street dancing, break dancing, popping and locking, and krumping,” he says. ‘The Dancing scene in Plymouth is huge. And in the South West, you’ve got people from all over the place coming and joining in all the stuff we’re doing, which is fantastic, having all that support, that kind of Hip Hop united respect for each other and supporting each other in the dance movement. competitions, shows, there’s quite a few bits going on all round the year,” explains Toby. Sam agrees: “There is certainly an exciting vibration in the South West for dance and theatre, I’m happy my company TrashDollys is based in Exeter. We feel the scene in Exeter is definitely on the up, and we are excited to be a part of this growing, and vibrant theatre scene.” Toby continues: “Being in the South West I think is quite nice because a lot of people get on together and support each other within all the different dance schools and hip hop crews. Sometimes in very big cities it can get a little bit crazy, because you got so many crews and so many styles and so many things going on. But it’s nice here, we’ve got as many styles as everywhere else, but it’s very chilled out.” Alongside the dancers from Gravity, Street Factory Studios, and Trashdollys, you can also expect to see Beat Breakers, Encore Dance Troupe, and Tricky Crew. Staying true to the spirit of the underground DIY ethos of street art, a whole bunch of artists recently took over a tunnel in the South West to hold an inpromtu weekend long graff jam. Over 15 artists took part, with some of the results seen here.
The UK’s biggest street art festival, Upfest takes place in Southville, Bristol on 2-4 June. The free festival will see over 250 groundbreaking graffiti artists consume over two miles of the city to paint live for three days and create over 20,000 square foot of artwork. A selection of the biggest names in international graffiti culture will be taking part alongside homegrown UK talent. Festival organisers have revealed a wide programme of events which includes over 40 bands and DJ’s playing, an affordable art sale, interactive art walls and the all new Graffiti Academy will offer over 90 graffiti tutorials for those who wish to turn their hand at painting. Hollie Cook Prince Fatty Presents Hollie Cook In Dub (Mr Bongo)
Hollie’s self-titled debut album was my number one choice in the mag’s end of the year best of charts last year. You’d struggle to find a better current reggae record: the voice, the songwriting, the strong bassplaying and the top-notch production make it great. So it’s no surprise that the album’s dub reworking (plus non-album material) by its producer is also effective. All the classic dub remix effects are present: mainly instrumental, bass does most of the work and Hollie’s gorgeous voice is teased in and out of the mix. The perfect companion for the album. And supporting The Stone Roses on their comeback gigs will probably mean that Hollie will be massive before too long. She certainly deserves it.
The Puddle
Secret Holiday/Victory Blues (Fishrider Records) For their seventh album, New Zealand’s The Puddle deliver ten songs that sit somewhere between The Velvet Underground‘s third album, Subway Sect and The Go-Betweens. On first play, the album’s opener, Decline to Fall stands out as its highlight, but after a few plays, the rest of them fall into place nicely. Quite a few of the songs chug along at a mid-tempo pace, powered by simplistic Velvets-style drums on floor-tom and snare. They drop it down a gear with the gentle Hydrogen 6, and pick it up again with the stomping Oh Hayley (You’re Right). George Henderson’s laidback vocal style is quite distinct, and it suits his slightly off-the-wall lyrics.
Opposite Sex
Opposite Sex (Fishrider/Occultation) BBC 6 Music’s Marc Riley and Gideon Coe have given this band a lot of support, and it’s easy to see why. What The Opposite Sex create is rough & ready, complex yet stripped down post-punk, with female vocals and a passion for pop and experimentation along the way. They’re a trio, and they act like it. Their sound is raw and stripped down: plenty of melody and tricky song structures, without cluttering the mix with lots of sounds. The guitarist works hard all the way, rarely settling for simplistic chords. This is punk rock in its truest sense, because punk is NOT a genre, it’s an attitude. A new band to get excited about for sure.
Sophya
Words & Sounds (Out of Print Records) Hailing from Amsterdam, Sophya have been around since the early 2000s, and this is a 14-song compilation marking their first (just over a) decade. The obvious points of reference are The Cocteau Twins and Siouxsie and the Banshees, but this is no imitation job: the band’s vocalist Sonja has definitely got her own thing going on. The guitar sound is also heavily influenced by the early Cure and most of the drums are created by ‘80s-sounding drum machines. Most of the album has a dark and dreamy psychedelic feel. Also included is the new single, the previously unavailable Desire, suggesting that the new album due later in the year may have more of an electronic feel.

Standing At The Sky’s Edge (Parlophone) Hawley was the soundtrack to my walking up the aisle on my wedding day and many a tear has been shed listening to his beautiful, soaring ballads. It would take a lot for me to dismiss him but, on first listen, something just doesn’t sit right with this album. Gone are the classic Orbison-sounding vocals and grandiose, orchestral sound, to make way for a revisit to his indieguitar driven Longpigs days (which I loved at the time). Initially, this album seems distinctly average but after a few more listens it proves to be one of those ‘growers’, which worms its way into your heart. Phew, you almost lost me there Hawley!
Alt-J
An Awesome Wave (Infectious) Here we have another band who’ve opted for a symbol instead of a name (though they have conceded to Alt-J to make life easier), perhaps to project an air of mystery; maybe cos they’re as pretentious as the artist formerly and latterly known as Prince; or maybe cos they’re borne of an Internet generation. Who cares? Their music is da bomb. Emanating a million and one diverse influences, from Ladysmith Black Mambazo to Noah and the Whale, Radiohead and The Dandy Warhols – which keeps it interesting. Catchy, swooning pop sat side by side with dub samples and twee indie sounds. And it works. What’s more, the origami album cover is immense!
Fighting Fiction Fighting Fiction (Xtra Mile)
For some reason, I thought Fighting Fiction would be some shit emo Busted–wannabe group. Fuck knows why, maybe it’s the name? But whacking their debut album on was tantamount to that Susan Boyle moment. These Bath-lads are good, really ruddy good. In a similar vein to Frank Turner, Crazy Arm and Chris TT, they harness their angst with their guitars and their farfrom-perfect but wonderously powerful, quintessentially English vocals and catchy riffs to rival those of Green Day and other US counterparts. The short, sharp songs on this album each prove a mini anthem in their own right and leave you gagging to see them live.
The Cribs
In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull Witchita The Cribs stormed onto the scene in the mid noughties with the cracking indie anthem ‘Men’s Needs’ and were in the limelight for a while, before fading into the ether. Singer Ryan Jarman occasionally popped up in the gossip mags as he was dating Kate Nash but we’d kinda forgotten about them. Until now. This album is a blinder. It employs earthy Beach Boys harmonies with that cool, understated Thurston Moore/Lee Ranaldo sound and throw in some hints of Britpop (the good bits) to boot. It’s energetic, catchy and inspired like a UK version of Weezer. Now if only Jarman would sort his ridiculous barnet out.

Caxton Press Shame the Devil (Defcon Records)
It’s a grey day outside and I’m sure this is helping me listen to this album, not that it’s dull and grey but it is very British. British hip hop feels so right on a grey day. An Aussie friend of mine once told me that Britain has a better music scene because we have such shit weather that we spend more time inside making it. If that is true it must have rained for ever round these guys way as this is banging. Well chosen samples and banging beats with decent flows from all concerned. If you want to discover a new UK hip hop group you could do far worse that starting here.

Down the Road (On and On Records) I used to play in a club in London where regularly they would have a DMC winner turntablist guest, he would turn up with some amazing scratch routines and clear the floor on every occasion. He did however impress about five guys each time, who would stand around the decks marvelling at his wizardry. These guys are French, don’t let that put you off. They won the DMC competition four times but don’t let that put you off either. This really wasn’t what I was expecting, I expected lots of fast cuts and scratches, with more focus on that than on solid music production, instead I get a bunch of extremely well chosen samples with some very tasty beats as well as some well placed cuts. I’m won over. More please.

La Belle Vie (First Word Records) I kept hearing tracks by these guys on other peoples mixes and in their DJ sets and on each occasion it would prick up my ears, the tracks always stood out for different reasons. So I was really looking forward to this album but also slightly wary as sometimes when you are really looking forward to an album it turns out decidedly mmmrh. I’m not sure how big the market is for these styles, downbeat, funky breaks, head nodding productions in a world of wub wub and more wub but if justice is to be done it needs a bigger one. I wasn’t even annoyed when these guys used a smile I’d been working on for months.

This Is UK Rap Vol 1 (Defenders Entertainment) From the guys that brought you the excellent UK Grime Series, they now take a step into the UK Rap market. This is a weird one really, the days when there were very specific lines drawn between musical genres have long gone, if a grime star charts are they a pop star, if a grime artists rides a 70bpm beat are they dubstep wannabes, all this kind of stuff seems to have faded. So whilst this doesn’t have any of the names I would have thought would appear on a UK rap compilation, it does have lots of the upcoming UK artists with flow. Big Up Sincere who I tip for the top, Lioness, steadily rising, as well as established chart stars, Wretch 32 and Skepta. A solid selection even if the title does confuse this old git. www.247magazine.co.uk

Torche
Harmonicraft (Volcom) Torche’s tastes are impeccable. It’s clear from their melodic flourishes that the Florida quartet grew up listening to trailblazers like Hüsker Dü and Melvins. And it’s equally clear from their bowel-disintegrating yet cleverly constructed rifferama that they rate Sabbath and Stoneage in equal measure. But it takes more than a good record collection to arrive at songs like ‘Kicking’ – pure powerhouse rock’n’roll with ethereal vocals that give off a faint Soundgarden aroma. ‘Snakes Are Charmed’ opens with a developed arpeggio that Matt Bellamy would be proud of and, best of all, ‘Sky Trials’ sends the band’s combination of technicality and brute strength soaring into the stratosphere.
Off! Off! (Vice)
If you were there first time around then I guess it’s not contrived to revive that same disaffected punk rasp that ushered in the arrival of American hardcore. So it goes with Off! and its protagonist, Keith Morris – the man who first gave Black Flag a voice and who took the Circle Jerks to their nihilist zenith. ‘Off!’ is substantial enough but it’s hard not to see it as a dusted off artifact rather than a modern day contribution. Maybe that’s the point: a nostalgic throwback to when US punk wasn’t homogenised by the industry. Mind you, that selfsame industry will probably be falling over itself to sign bands like this in twelve months.
Get Cape Wear Cape Fly Maps (Cooking Vinyl)
Sam Duckworth is clearly missing Blur. So rather than wait around for a solid reunion he’s decided to pay his respects with a clutch of songs that sound like they could’ve been studio floor cuts during the making of ‘The Great Escape’. New single ‘Daylight Robbery’ is a case in point: a bass-heavy indie-punk groove with falsetto whoops and home counties melodies. Even more imitative is ‘Easy (Complicated)’ – Damon would surely cringe. ‘Call Of Duty’ is a return to familiar Get Cape territory, while the jazz funk splurge of ‘Vital Statistics’ is a non sequitir. Heart in the right place, decent chap and all that, but ‘Maps’ is something that fails to connect due to its insistence on pastiche.
OZRIC TENTACLES Paper Monkeys (Madfish)
I once saw Ozric Tentacles play for eight hours at a festival in Tewkesbury in the late ‘80s. I remember frugging merrily to their Steve Hillage solos stretched out over freeform, neo-hippy sonic odysseys, sitting down for a little sleep and waking up at daybreak to find them still going. It’s this stamina and dogged dedication to cosmos-straddling psyche-rock that has kept them plying their wares for over quarter of a decade. Of course, they’ve moved with the underground times, embracing electro-dub and synth skronk along the way but the song, and the nonsensical song titles (‘Knurl’, ‘Lemon Kush’, ‘Plowm’), remain the same. Long may they reign in their netherworld of ethereal emissions and acid-fried gibberish. www.247magazine.co.uk

For a band so young, Plymouth’s Heathens Howl’s appropriation of the melancholic moods of the ‘80s is nothing short of astonishing. ‘Teeth’ is how Joy Division would sound through a Coral filter: resignation and rootsiness in equal measure, with a chorus to die for. It is, truly, a work of wonder. The inventiveness continues with ‘Blossom’, a shuffling ode to self-doubt that walks the perfect line between humility and vulnerability; while ‘Step’ and ‘Brick Walls’ are gorgeous indie-folk songs that display a lyrical prowess on a par with early Morrissey, and a musical palette of the finest calibre. If Heathens Howl can find an opening, the misery-pop mantle is theirs for the taking.

Exeter singer-songwriter, Daniel Schamroth, is another one of those earnest-to-goodness indie ‘troubadours’ with an acoustic guitar and a lack of decent songs. Moonlighting from his role in The Fab Beatles, this new five song EP (released through Broken Records) is like being hit repeatedly over the head with jelly. It doesn’t hurt but you really wish it would stop. ‘A Broken Violin’ has a slide blues motif but quickly subsides into the wet morass with Daniel’s meandering croon eliciting little empathy. And nearly all of the songs go on way too long for something so stripped down. If you like Richard Ashcroft then just listen to Richard Ashcroft because this will not enrich your acoustic collection in the slightest.

www.facebook.com/ calldrexl With three quarters of defunct Westcountry punkers, Quarantine, on board, Drexl deal in frazzled, riffembracing punk rock with a respectful nod to the agit-groove of Rage Against The Machine. On ‘The Bees’ EP, Chris Muirhead’s deranged howl is, as ever, a thing of wonky wonder that even strays into Mark E Smith territory on the excellent and extraordinary ‘Life Becomes Like Song Titles’. The band flexes its hardcore brawn to fine effect on ‘Climb’, which swaggers like a raging Bad Brains homage before morphing into a New York hardcore wig-out. All told, this is thrilling and ever-so-slightly discomfiting stuff: as if you’re bearing witness to a psychological meltdown. It certainly never did Nirvana any harm. Oh, wait…
Olive Anne
www.whatweshouldbedoing. bandcamp.com If you’re looking for a split acoustic album (on tape, no less) full of the spirit of youth and young wo/manhood then look no further than this gem. Some Sort Of Threat – Exeter’s Rory Matthews – scatters words of precocious wisdom and kitchen-sink observations in small, speedy, yet perfectly formed doses, with a conviction and righteousness that is both disarming and alluring. Meanwhile, Southsea’s Olive Anne takes things at a steadier pace and is equally as endearing, especially on ‘Millbank’, a song that reshapes the emotive stylings of early Billy Bragg with a balmy undertow. Olive and SSOT complement each other perfectly, both drawing from the same subcultural well and neither falling foul to egotism or self-indulgence. Quite brilliant.
Geck-E Soul Train [Therabyte]
Dutch wonder Geck-E is looking to have an even better year ahead of him this year than in 2011, with upcoming performances at the legendary Defqon 1 and Dance Valley festivals. What’s loveable about his productions as ‘Geck-E’ are the fusion of styles that and complete unexpectedness at what will come next. His previous EP ‘Ehh Yeah’ had longevity in my sets for most of the later part of last year, and he has certainly delivered one hell of a belter with ‘Soul Train’. Sounding like a meeting of minds between Scot Project and Andrea Montorsi, this is an out and out hard trancer that has been receiving some amazing support throughout Europe and comes highly recommended.

Midnight Express [Kant] It’s a great feeling when you find a track is really simple yet really stands out, and this new release on Kant is exactly that! Samuel L Session’s mix is spot on. Cleverly fusing techno and trance with a not too steady BPM, this has such a quirky bass line but when combined a deep kick and gorgeous strings works so well. Rest assured within minutes of finding the name after Joris Voorn played it at Awakenings, this was an instant purchase and later that evening myself and a few friends were all in agreement of how strong a track it was, and also a long but amusing debate on how to pronounce the artist name.

Forgotten Dream (Busho Mix) [Bionic Digital] When this first surfaced on Omni recordings back in 1999, it was the mainstay of many leading trance DJs sets for quite some time, with licenses all over the world, and rightly so! Now it has been released by Cardiff’s Bionic imprint (a label ran from the promoters of the very successful club nights) with some new mixes. Bristol’s Busho manages to up the pace quite considerably of the original and adds his harder touch, with a monstrous kick and bass and incorporating a stabby synth riff that really does the damage on a loud system. If you are looking for something familiar that is guaranteed to get a good reception, this is worth checking.

Hard Like Bronze [Blackout Audio] After deciding to re-master and re-release some of their earlier material, Blackout Audio touch down with release number 20. This time it’s from Argentinian mastermind Luis Ruiz! Having a distinct sound has lead to worldwide success with releases on labels such as Warm Up, Communique and Planet Rhythm. ‘Hard Like Bronze’, is both distinct and menacing, but the production is pristine and this sounds massive on a big sound system. ‘Engraving’ takes on a similarly sinister role that you’ve come to love from Luis’ production, with the remix from The Anxious, (Mark Anxious aka Mark EG and Chrissi) who give the track a further twisted edge winning pride of place in this reviewer’s record bag as well. magazine | 31

Until now, there has been little evidence of these fascinating lives. Read and listen to personal stories, see artefacts, photographs and more. This thought-provoking exhibition spans three centuries and captures the heart of the changing ‘scene’ over the decades, as well as the political struggle both past and present. Come along and find out more about this diverse and intriguing aspect of Plymouth’s history. When the exhibition is over, all the memorabilia will be stored at the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office as a permanent archive, enabling this important part of our heritage to be remembered.

Here Depp plays an imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, who is set free after 20 years and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection. The film is based on a campy 60’s TV series and is perfect match for Burton’s eerie, black, comedy.

Released: 2 May Directors: Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg Starring: Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Seann William Scott 2011/US/113 min It’s been 13 years since American Pie served up baked goods as a masturbatory aid and now Jim, Michelle, Stifler, and their friends reunite for their high school reunion. The only difference is that most of them have put on a few pounds (probably the pies!) and for most of the cast this is a welcome reboot for their careers. Expect plenty of gross-out comedy and a lack of maturity. Yes, the American Pie movie saga has been going on for a hell of a long time, but that doesn’t curb our morbid fascination to see how the delinquents are getting on in their old age.
HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION (15)
Released: 11 May Dir: Adrian Grunberg Starring: Mel Gibson and Daniel Gimenez Cacho 2011/US/96 min A career criminal (Gibson) is nabbed by Mexican authorities is placed in a tough prison where he learns to survive with the help of a 9-year-old boy. This is an apparent return to form for Gibson, after The Beaver, and sees him retreading the hard-boiled macho posturing of Payback. Can’t wait!

Released: 4 May Dir: Boaz Yakin Starring: Jason Statham, Catherine Chan and Chris Sarandon 2011/US/94 min Jason Statham plays a former elite agent who takes on a two-tier mission: rescue a Chinese girl who’s been abducted by the Triads, then use a safe combination to outwit the Russian Mafia, corrupt NYC officials, and the Triads themselves. Talk about multi-tasking! Anyway, expect the usual mixed martial arts, explosions and redundant romantic plotting to fill up a couple of hours.

The first film was a fresh and irrelevant take on the science fiction genre and the secretive intelligence services in the US, while its sequel served up a lazy slab of entertainment, hopefully this three-quel will arrest the slide!

It was APOLOGIES I HAVE NONE’s album launch (go get it now!) and we were special secret guests for our sins, so off we trundled to Shoreditch to laugh at the arch hipsters and coo at SAM RUSSO’s dulcet, self-mocking tones (Old Blue Last, London, 22nd March). It was heartening to see AIHN play to a packed and clearly charmed home crowd. They returned the band’s every word, and brand new songs were embraced with the same air-clenching zeal as old faves; even ‘The 26’ where Josh Mckenzie flies, unapologetically, off the PC handle. There were many musicians who succumbed and fell foul to the creative hedonism that enveloped Laurel Canyon, California in the ‘60s and ‘70s. And there were many survivors too: Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, James Taylor (just), Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills and, of course, leading Lady of the Canyon, JOAN BAEZ (Plymouth Pavilions, 23rd March). She was one of the real big hitters: incredibly beautiful, talented, bold and fiercely defiant in the face of her government’s incessant quest for dominance on the world stage. Now here she is, in the soul-sapping inelegance of Plymouth Pavilions, trying to communicate that self-same rebel spirit to an auditorium of people who, while applauding Joan’s lip service to the Occupy movement, probably turned their noses up at, and shepherded their kids away from, the raggle-taggle Plymouth Occupy camp at Jigsaw Gardens last winter. But the song remains the same. And the voice, now pitted with a lived-in depth, remains as sublime and warm-blooded as it ever was. Special credit must go to the backing multi-instrumentalist/singer who, whilst looking like he’d wandered in from a PTA meeting, brought a beautiful, Midas-like presence to everything he played. Unfortunately, we had to slink away early from JB in order to play Plymouth’s first ever Armagedd’on Fest – a brave little venture that left its positive mark on the city’s subcultural landscape (23rd and 24th March). After a sunny afternoon of DIY alt. boutique stalls at Jack Chams, we headed up a free acoustic session at the sweaty venue, alongside KELLY KEMP and MIKE SCOTT. The next day, things moved to the White Rabbit with more stalls and a bunch of gloriously noisy ensembles. It must be fun to be in a band that’s on an eternal mission to seek out crypto-chords, anti-melodies and counterrhythms – anything that doesn’t sound like how a normal band would operate. And London trio, SILENT FRONT, are dab hands. Their Big Black-meets-Mclusky squawl of noise was, at times, dazzlingly effective, as long as you understood what they were doing. However, if you’d been raised on a diet of Feeder and daytime radio then the denseness and wilful obtuseness might have sent you scuttling to the nearest Rock Café in disgust. More fool you. Next up, DAMERELS, were fucking awesome. There are times during the throbbing threesome’s intense set when you feel you could be witnessing the most promising garage punk band in the country – a band who have come closer to capturing the zest of the Stooges or the Sonics than any of those ‘it’ bands who constantly bang on about their pre-punk credentials. If you haven’t seen them, do it now before they inevitably implode or explode. Armed with ‘proper’ tunes yet wired to the sweaty eyeballs were our London chums, THE DISSOCIATES. It’s hard not to love this band’s dedication to their sound, lodged somewhere between Burning Airlines’ serpentine tunefulness and the jittery assault of early Clash. It was the first time in Plymouth for Bristol trio, CAVES, but they kept their heads down and smashed out short, boisterous poppunk songs by the fizz-load. (Arma)gedd’on, indeed. See-ya bye.
