We talk to Andy C about his longevity in the drum and bass scene and his new show, Alive… You’ve been a pioneer in drum and bass for over two decades and started you label, RAM, when you were just 16, what’s given you such longevity? I guess it’s my passion for what I do. I’m very lucky that it has turned into a career. There’s no better feeling than being on the decks at a club or festival: I can’t explain! Any advice for young people looking to follow in your footsteps? When I started I wanted to live and breathe the scene. We went out handing out flyers after raves, I worked for a distributor selling into shops, pirate radio: you name it: I did it. Nothing comes to you: you have to go to it!
through. It’s gonna take a minute, that’s for sure! You’re known as ‘The Executioner’ – why? I think GQ said it many moons ago and it just stuck – it’s all about smashing up the party I guess!
We’re gonna put on a show: big, bright and banging!
You’ve nurtured a lot of highprofile careers including Chase & Status, Sub Focus – who stands out the most? They’re all special. It’s such a great feeling watching someone go from unknown producer to become a worldwide success. That’s what RAM is about. We put everything into promoting our artists. There’s so much talent out there that it’s our job to expose people to it. What are you listening to right now? Tons of Drum and Bass! I’ve got three weeks of tunes to go
Technology has moved on so much since you started out in the early rave days – is this something you’ve always embraced? I’ve always been into technology, computers were the reason I started making music. My house is full of gadgets! Right now it’s amazing what you can do, compared to how it was when we first started. It’s all about embracing technology: you have to move on.
So, tell us about your new show, Alive. Alive is about taking a DJ set into a new dimension. I’ve teamed up with some great companies that have brand new technology that allows me to do things in a set that haven’t been possible before. I’m in control of the whole thing audibly and visually and this has never been done so I’ve been told. We’re gonna put on a show: big, bright and banging!

Ugly Duckling American hip hop legends, Ugly Duckling hit the South West this month. Aldo Vanucci catches up with Andy Cooper to talk guilty pleasures, MCing and bagels. How come so many of your peers have fallen by the way side, yet you are still going strong and still packing them in? I think it’s because we are willing to work for cheap. We can travel light, just three of us, two decks a mixer and mics. Also, our sound is beyond a time frame, we might play a new track or an old track and it still sounds fresh. If Ugly Duckling were bagels, what flavour would you be? Dizzy would be cream cheese, Einstein would be maybe a cinnamon and I’d be, what would be a real simple one, like just a plain bagel. What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you? There was a manager we worked with a long time ago and he said decide if you want to be a businessman or an artist and if you are gonna be an artist, be thankful if one person likes what you do. That really helped me to get things straight in my head. Obviously the southwest is the best place in the UK to play, where is the worst? We don’t usually have bad gigs, we love what we do but we were up in Barrow In Furness, a little lost looking for the club, I was on my mobile and driving trying to find where to go, as we approached a roundabout this guy cuts it front of us and stops, gets out and starts going nuts at us, saying he had his daughter in the car and we were endangering her life by me speaking on my mobile while driving. We were just so shocked at his level of anger, especially as it was more dangerous for him to swerve in front us and stop. Who is the greatest MC of all time? Wow, that’s so subjective, I mean for me, it has to be Q Tip from a Tribe Called Quest. Those first three Tribe albums were some of the best in hip hop, just the way his vocals feel and flow. The layers in his vocals were so stylistically great. What got you into hip hop in the first place? I think it was my lack of any real musical talent, it’s not
something you have to do lessons in. You can just bang on a desk in school, rap over it and people say that was cool. It’s not like if you wanna be a concert pianist where you would have to really work at it. You travel around a lot is there anywhere you haven’t been that you’d like to? Oh yeah, Italy that would be cool, Israel and pretty much all of South America. Is that because your music doesn’t sell so well there or you’ve not been invited - how do you work out where to tour? It’s a combination of those, we hear about people we know who have been. Cut Chemist dj’d down in South America but sometimes a DJ can work where a live act doesn’t. Which MC are you feeling the most right now? This might surprise some but Lil Wayne. People say it’s this or it’s that kind of rap but when I hear him, whether it’s a rock track a pop track, whatever, he says something clever or funny. So many metaphors. Each time you listen, you hear something else. I heard a rumour that Rakim ghost wrote Jazzy Jeff’s “Summertime”, which he has since denied but it sounds so true, which song do you wish you’d written? “I got it made” by Special Ed, when I heard that I was like wow. Name a musical guilty pleasure? You mean apart from Lil Wayne? Ha. There’s an old sixties group called Free Design, Einstein is like an obsessive record collector and about 10 years ago he played me some, and I thought I need to hear more of this, it’s friendly family happy music. Who would play you guys in the film of your life? Einstein would be Steve Bushemi Dizzy would be Kevin James I’d be Jerry O’Connell

Original Prankster
After spending much of the past 10 years entertaining home audiences with a guffaw-inducing – and occasionally stomach-churning – assortment of ill-advised stunts, Steve-O will be hitting the road this month with his Entirely Too Much Information Tour. Ahead of his forthcoming visit to the South West, everyone’s favourite Jackass tells 247’s Rob Sleigh what to expect from the new live show… “It was a fucking blood bath,” recalls Steve-O, harking back to his UK stand-up debut earlier this year. “Up to that point, I had done almost all of my shows in little comedy clubs. So to be in front of over a thousand people made me want to bust out more stunts and tricks. I saw to it that, before the show was over, I was covered in blood and engulfed in flames.” However, apart from the occasional return to his previous antics, the former Jackass star has recently been turning his back on that particular brand of comedy in favour of a more traditional kind. “My first time doing stand-up gave me a glimpse of a possible future that didn’t involve hurting myself to make a living. I’m always going to be Steve-O from Jackass and I’m always going to have that sense of humour, but I don’t want to have to break bones and shove shit up my ass for the rest of my life.” Steve-O’s new venture began five years ago, when a visit to Hollywood’s legendary Laugh Factory turned into an unplanned first attempt at stand-up comedy. “I had absolutely zero intention of doing it. But when I came up with the idea, I looked at it like a stunt. When I came off stage, the club owner told me he was really impressed and he wanted me to come back.” Steve-O goes on to confirm that the owner wasn’t the only person that was pleasantly surprised by his stand-up debut: “I was amazed that I had managed to entertain people without having to harm myself. There was no danger, no risk, no vomit,
no pain, but I still got legitimate laughs. It felt like I was some kind of a natural talent.” Since his first shot as a comic, Steve-O has gone on to buildup a complete repertoire based on his own style of real-life comedy. “What sets me apart from other comedians is that everything that comes out of my mouth on stage is true. There are so many outrageous stories of weird and hilarious situations that I’ve been in. The amount of material at my disposal is almost endless.” Although people are occasionally surprised by the noticeable lack of slapstick comedy in his new show, Steve-O explains that he has little trouble regaining their interest: “The shit that comes out of my mouth is so ridiculous that I manage to get everyone’s attention pretty quickly. When you’re talking about crazy experiences with transvestites and you’re not kidding, people tend to tune-in.” While Steve-O accepts that he’s destined to be remembered for his Jackass days, it’s clear that his passion for entertaining goes much further than some may have realised. “People believe that Jackass has required some kind of high threshold for pain, but I’ve never had a high threshold for pain. What’s driven me in everything that I’ve done is an unreasonable hunger for attention. I absolutely love being on stage and making people laugh and shriek and wince and groan. As long as there is a reaction, I really feel at home.”

Press Pack Sessions Presents
Crazy Arm With the upcoming release of their second album, ‘Union City Breath’, Plymouth punks Crazy Arm are back in town. Joe Biddle chats to lead vocalist Darren Johns and guitarist Jon Dailey. So, tell us about yourselves… DJ: We’ve been together for about five years, the first year didn’t mean a lot to us because I was in Once or Twice at the time and John and Simon were doing really well with No Comply, but when both of our bands split, thankfully the result of that was Crazy Arm. Our music has definitely progressed over the course of five years. You can hear how your band has progressed when comparing ‘Union City Breath’ to your first record… DJ: It’s nice to hear you say that because it was a worry that we could either be re-treading old ground or it could have been too much of a departure. We have a country, folky thing because I began using my own acoustic songs within our set and it has now become part of our sound. I hate using the word organic, but the progression of our sound is organic and who knows where it could go. JD: On this record we’ve taken the folk, rock and personal aspects of our music and pushed them further. DJ: Yeah, we found a new confidence because it has been embraced by our fans, and now that we have a more established and wider fan base over the country and in Europe we felt that these country and acoustic influences could now be brought to the front. What else is new? DJ: There’s a lot more instrumentation and Vicky Butterfield, who has sung on stage before is singing on four or five songs alongside me, which is nice. We also have Patrick James Pearson on keys and the fiddle. People ask if we are pressured to match our first record but we aren’t, we want to make a great record to please ourselves and we didn’t just
want to re-create our first record. You’ve been hot on the touring scene; have you had any bad experiences live? DJ: The only disappointment that we’ve had is when we didn’t get to support the Against Me tour. We toured with Frank Turner last year and we did Reading, Leeds and a whole bunch of festivals. We then got the offer to support Against Me, a band that we really admire, but they then cancelled it because of some serious issues with their record label which we found out about later but at the time nobody knew about. It was the biggest disappointment. It was still the best year ever but I really wish it had happened; we would have been able to play in countries we had never played before like Spain, Norway and Italy. But they’re back together and have a tour planned so fingers crossed! And finally, as a punk protest band, what are your thoughts on the current music industry? DJ: I’m old fashioned with this stuff and I’m unable to follow the trends because I’m just not interested. The music industry is obviously suffering as a result, but it’s never bothered me. I’m proud of the songs I write rather than my bank balance, so when the industry hacks are up in arms about people downloading records records I just think “Well, I never cared about you in the first place, why should I care about you now?” Crazy Arm are: Darren Johns - vocals, guitars, words // Jon Dailey - guitars, bass // Simon Marsh - drums // Tim Rowing-Parker - bass, vocals

Benjamin Francis Leftwich On the road again Celebrating the recent release and subsequent chart success of his debut album, York’s Benjamin Francis Leftwich will be spending the next few weeks with little more than a guitar for company as he heads off on a major headlining tour of the UK. Speaking to Rob Sleigh ahead of his upcoming date in Exeter, Ben tells us about his hectic year so far… Benjamin Francis Leftwich has had something of a busy summer. Having kicked the season off with the release of his debut long-player ‘Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm’ - which quickly went on to make its mark on the UK Albums Chart and earn the young solo artist a cascade of welldeserved attention - the 22-year-old singer-songwriter celebrated the occasion by throwing himself wholeheartedly at this year’s festival circuit. “I think it’s my 20th festival of 2011 today or something like that,” says Ben, less than an hour away from one of his final sets of the summer. “So yeah… it’s been busy, but it’s also been great.” Performing at nearly all of the country’s outdoor music events since the release of ‘Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm’ has allowed Ben to get a first-hand idea of what people think of his first effort as a solo artist: “The response has been really positive. I never really know what to expect with these things, but people seem to be into it. I’m just glad that people are connecting with the songs. Also, it seems like everyone’s into different songs on the album, which is really cool for me.” Earlier in the year, Ben finished recording the album with producer Ian Grimble, who has previously worked with the likes of Manic Street Preachers and Travis. He confirms that, after spending many of his teenage years writing songs, he was overjoyed to finally see some of them get made into a record: “It was cool. I’m really proud of these songs. I started
writing some of them when I was like 17 years old. There’s a mixture of songs on there – some of them are a couple of years old and some of them are much newer. There wasn’t really a specific time period.” After growing up listening to the likes of Bruce Springsteen and The Beatles, Ben began his own foray into music from quite an early age. However, as he goes on to explain, those first few attempts got off to an initial staggered start: “I had a couple of guitar lessons when I was about 10, but I didn’t really like them, so I quit. I picked up guitar again when I was about 14 and taught myself from there.” As the years passed and his songwriting improved, the attention and support he began receiving from other people gradually pushed him towards making music professionally. “I still don’t consider myself to really be a ‘professional’. But I’m a big music fan and I love playing music. In terms of it becoming something that I’m doing all the time now, it just kind of happened.” With the start of his first proper tour since the release of ‘Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm’ now imminent, Ben describes how he’s feeling in the run-up: “I’m really looking forward to it, it’s going to be awesome. I’ve been really busy with the album and with festivals this summer, so it’ll be good to get back on the road. Sometimes gigs are hard, sometimes they’re easy, but I always enjoy them.”

THE GALLERY, FLEET WALK, TORQUAY 01803 213993 FACEBOOK: FABRIC TORQUAY Fabric was born 4 years ago...Its aim is to provide the southwest with a new way for the male of the species to feel special in the clothes that they wear. A destination store, providing leading brands and exciting new labels but crucially putting high quality customer service at the heart of the project. with Its stylish open plan environment, the customer was made central to the success of the business. They were asked what they wanted from a 21st century independent menswear business. The answers they gave us shaped the way Fabric evolved. No longer would it be the case that the store carried old establishment brands that had become stagnant and boring. Each brand would be judged on its current collection. Exciting new brands, never before offered to the discerning public of the southwest, were carefully selected, bought and merchandised in a cleverly thought through manner, taking the “shopping experience back to the enjoyable pastime it should always have been. Having already established a loyal local customer base, the launch of the website aims to spread the word. Now, everyone who, after visiting the Torquay store and asking if there was a FABRIC near them, can enjoy the personal shopping experience that we hope has made a big impact on the retail landscape of the south west.

The Great British Sunday Roast Sunday wouldn’t be same without one…
PLYMOUTH The Fishermans Arms
31 Lambhay Street, The Barbican, Plymouth, PL1 2NN, 01752 661457
Plymouth’s second oldest pub, The Fishermans Arms, is pleasantly situated overlooking the Barbican and boasts a separate restaurant area, cosy yet contemporary décor and friendly, attentive staff. Sunday lunch at the Fisherman’s is quite legendary, so booking is recommended. To start choose from Soup of the Day or Venison & Juniper Terrine with Fig Chutney, or go straight for the roast, like I did. I opted for Roast Shoulder of Pork and my fellow diner chose Roast Topside of Beef. The Roast crown of Turkey also looked good and it’s all locally sourced. Without exaggeration, and with considerable thought, I’m happy to say this was the best Sunday Roast I have ever eaten out. The large, but not overfilled plate, was filled with a hearty portion of perfectly cooked, juicy meat (my crackling was also supreme, as was the Yorkshire Pudding). Pleasingly, the veggies were as tasty as the meat: herbed roasties, cumin roasted carrots, to-die-for creamed swede, broccoli and cauli cheese. The chef certainly deserves his AA Rosette. At 9.25 per roast it’s an absolute steal. To follow, I had the local trio of cheeses, which was so delicious I made room for all of it. Dark Chocolate & Raspberry Tart, Eton Mess and Crème Brulee were also n offer, all at £4.95. Sunday lunch is served from 12am till 3pm, see you there. Rachael D’Cruze
Falmouth The Star and Garter
Free House, 52 The Old High Street, Falmouth, TR11 2AF 01326 318313 The pub is near the top of The Old High Street in Falmouth, a cosy local with stunning views across the river of Flushing and St Mawes. The bar is small yet spacious and was surprisingly quiet for mid afternoon on a Sunday, which was wonderfully refreshing. There was beef, pork, and lamb to choose from, or nut roast if you’re that way inclined. I’m not, so I opted for pork. After ordering at the bar and taking our seat, service was quick. The plates were big and loaded with typical Roast adornments; Roast potatoes, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding, peas, cabbage, and lashings of gravy. Most importantly there was loads of meat and the crackling was tasty. There was also a selection of roasted vegetables with a sort of Mediterranean feel going on, which was a little weird, I would have preferred, say carrots, or parsnips. The meal came in at a very agreeable £7.50, definitely one of the cheapest roasts in Falmouth. The staff were friendly and polite and the atmosphere was very chilled. Make sure you check out their extensive collection of teapots! Roasts are served all day between 12.30pm and 9pm. Hannah Giles magazine 26 |
Exeter Old Fire House
50 New North Road, Exeter, EX4 4EP/ 01392 277279 It’s a good sign when you see a pub that’s packed just after midday, and when you order a meal, it’s easy to see why. Their traditional Sunday roasts are cooked to perfection, with all the meat coming from South West farms. The roast potatoes are faultless: crispy on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside, and the cauliflower cheese & broccoli is also quite exceptional. The meat is cooked to your preference: rare, medium or well done. Their prices are very affordable, considering the quality you’re getting: £6.50 for the regular size (which is frankly plenty) or £9.50 for large. The vegetarian option has a creative approach: flat mushrooms & goat’s cheese with fresh vegetables, potatoes and onion & rosemary gravy, served on a giant Yorkshire pudding. All meals are prepared to order, for maximum freshness, and you can round it off with sticky toffee pudding, Belgian waffles or banoffee pie. The Fire House is the runner up for both the 2012 Campaign For Real Ale, and also the recent National Cider Pub of the Year, serving award winning ciders and ales. Sunday roasts are served from midday5pm. Arash Torabi
Truro The Riverbank Hotel
Bistro & Bar, Old Bridge Street, Truro Their website promises delicious food and fine wine and I wasn’t disappointed. At £8.50 for roast, the food really did exceed expectations. The options were Cornish reared loin of pork with crackling, of course, or Cornish topside of beef (served medium). Both locally sourced meats were cooked to perfection and came with roast potatoes - crispy on the outside fluffy on the inside, Yorkshire pudding, a selection of ‘al dente’ vegetables (no waterlogged carrots here) and a tasty red-wine jus - with extra available for those gravy guzzlers. A fish option was also on offer. If you can squeeze in a dessert after the generously portioned main meal then there’s a great selection on offer, I can highly recommend the delicious Bramley apple and blackberry crumble if only to try the unique flavour of the accompanying ‘apple pie ice cream’ supplied by the nearby Callestick Farm. Located beneath the spires of Truro Cathedral The Riverbank shouts Local wherever possible, from the food through to the photos on the walls. The staff are friendly, thoughtful and happy to answer any queries and even make recommendations (thanks for the ice-cream tip). Ellie Williams www.247magazine.co.uk
See No Evil, the biggest public street art project ever held in the South West, indeed the UK has left a great footprint in central Bristol. Back in August, over 80 artists painted numerous buildings on Nelson St, including a 12 storey tower block. Artists were invited from all over the world, and included New York’s Tats Crew, and London based DJ and actor, Goldie. The art will remain in place for at least the next 12months, so if you’re in the area, check it out.

Action Sports
Plymouth City Roller Girls Roller Derby is the fastest growing sport in the UK, so 247’S Frances Allan gave it a whirl with the ladies of Plymouth and see what it’s all about. Roller Derby is a full-on, contact sport that is based around hitting and bashing your opponents off an elliptical track. Players wear quad roller skates, and have witty nicknames – Midslamma Murders anyone? Teams consist of five players, one of which is a Jammer. The Jammer’s aim is to skate around the track and earn points by passing the oppositions players. The rest of the team are called Blockers, it’s their job to stop the opposition’s Jammer getting past. They can attack the Jammer anywhere between the shoulder and mid-thigh to stop them getting past, which can result in skaters being knocked to the ground and shoved off the track.
developing through the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, before it was turned into a gladiator-style television programme in the 90s. In 2001 a Texan team developed an all-women Roller Derby league, and it has been evolving over the last 10 years. The Plymouth City Roller Girls kitted me up with a helmet, wrist guards, knee pads and skates, and I took my first tentative steps. Getting up was a challenge in itself, but once I was on my feet, I was shown how to stop. Once I began to skate, Liz, taught me the correct stance, how to move my feet, and how to get around the corners. I skated round the track for an hour, with the pros whizzing past me doing their impressive tricks. Stopping proved to be quite hard and usually resulted in my falling over, but with perseverance I could feel myself getting a little better…
Roller Derby is a full-on, contact sport that is based around hitting and bashing your opponents off an elliptical track.
Formed in October 2010, the Plymouth City Roller Girls have been training weekly and having ‘friendly’ matches. Their first official match is on Saturday October 1 against the Atlantic Breakers; a team from Cornwall. Being held at Plymouth’s Mayflower Centre, the bout will be witnessed by 400 fans. Liz Cheeseright, one of the Plymouth City Roller Girls, said: “We have got a really good team spirit, we have been training hard and we all know each other really well. If we do lose, it’ll be a crushing defeat”. The history of Roller Derby goes back around 80 years, starting in the 1930s with endurance skating around an oval track,
Fortunately my session was not a full on training session, Liz says that usually they train “lots of play-out tactics, multi games where we do different plays, lots of hitting – so we bash each other round. We also do a lot of endurance and fitness such as cardio. It’s a two minute jam which is a match’s natural duration although they usually get called off about a minute in, so if you’re the Jammer on your third way around the track it’s so tiring and you need to be really fit”.

Staring At The X Are these really the same Brooklynites that cobbled together the uber-ramshackle, anti-folk ‘Survival’ a couple years ago? Apparently, amazingly, so. With such off-kilter origins I guess anything was possible. Opener ‘Born Into’ is a revelation: an elongated, fuzz-smothered paean floating in the ether between Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth. What follows is a wilfully experimental opus of stream-ofelectro-thrum with occasional reminders of the FF of old, chiefly in its wayward ethos, with Mark Thresher’s Dylan-esque croon in fine fettle. ‘They Pray Execution Style’ is a post-punk curio with echoes of PiL while ‘Mtns Are Mtns’ is a country lullaby brilliantly spoilt by some absurd oboe-saturation. Still on the fringe, still loving it. We salute you.
Black Tusk Packs Set The Dial (Relapse)
A lot of self-confessed heavy duty bands like to burst in on a riot of down-tuned menace but Savannah, Georgia’s Black Tusk don’t see why they should do anything but continually punch you in the bladder with grumbling sonic ill-intent and Sabbath-pillaging rhyhmic groove. Third album, ‘Set The Dial’, is no departure, of course, but who wants innovation when ‘Ender Of All’ can, erm, put an end to all your worries with one brutal Southern-fried grunt after another? The intro to ‘Mass Devotion’ threatens to take us into lovely psyche-Baroness territory but soon returns to what the ‘Tusk do best: turn electricity and tone into a bowel-bothering leviathan. Not clever but very, very big.
Cosmo Jarvis
Is The World Strange Or Am I Strange? (25th Frame) Cosmo Jarvis is a confused man. And a funny man. And a disarmingly driven man. This is why people find him hard to read and resist. But all he wants to do is write songs to make sense of his lateral thought processes and, in the main, he succeeds. ‘Gay Pirates’ is the best sea shanty you’ll never hear a rigger sing; ‘Sure As Hell Not Jesus’ is a glorious, priest-baiting slab of Bonzo Dog-style music-hall; and ‘Let Me Out Of My Head’ is the sweetest psyche-pop vignette that Syd Barrett never crooned. The NME hated this album because Cosmo doesn’t fit into their narrow remit of what modern pop should sound like. Amen to that.
Waters
Out In The Light
(City Slang) With the demise of Port O’Brien, Van Pierszalowski dusted himself down explored the climactic extremes of Alaska, California and Norway and shifted his musical mindset to embrace the wonky, fuzz guitar-centric craft of Pavement, Elliott Smith and Superchunk. And why not? A defiant break from the past, ‘Out In The Light’ is an affectionate blend of acoustic and electric invention, with Van’s leafy voice adding pathos to the sub-pop vigour of ‘O Holy Break Of Day’, ‘If I Run’ and the joyously yearning ‘Take Me Out To The Coast’. He’s never been short on thrift-store melodies and WATERS is a more than capable conduit to showcase his developed, retro-fit oeuvre.

Valediction
This debut 5-track EP showcases the talents of the latest artist dabbling in lo-fi electronica and folk. Thoughts may well turn to British electro-folkster, Tuung, for whom David has been opening shows recently, but what he has to offer is a fresher sound, mainly down to his superior standard of song-writing. His arrangements are also well thought out. The upbeat Incredible Airplane Party is the stand-out track, and each of the other tracks here captures a slightly different feel. Jacques Cousteau brings in a falsetto vocal hook, against a backdrop of rhythmic arpeggio guitar, and a beat that gradually builds.
Crazy Arm
Union City Breath
(Xtra Mile/Gunner Records) The second album from Devon’s charged-up post-punk rockers sees them take up their powerful sound to the next level. The album kicks in with Of The Tarantulas, which deals with justice, revenge and morality. Their anti-war and anti-fascist stance is made abundantly clear, with singer/guitarist, Darren Johns belting out every word with compassion, like he means it. And he does. Incredible drumming, hardas-nails guitars and complex arrangements throughout, particularly on the current single, Tribes/Animals. The precision in their sound proves that this is an active band, that’s constantly touring. Darren‘s lyrics tell it like it is, and one of the best examples is: “Nazi scumbags must never take command/The BNP will never get to rule my land”.
Aunt Nelly Aunt Nelly
(Time For Action) London/Kent Mod revivalists, Aunt Nelly rise from the ashes of The Clique, who dropped a number of records in the 90s (they also once featured Acid Jazz King, James Taylor in their line-up) What Aunt Nelly bring to the table is hardly the reinvention of the wheel. In stead, they deliver good old foot-stomping soulfulness, heavily influenced by the 60s. With organs galore and chugging snares aplenty, most of the tracks are designed for dancing, such as Never Gonna Sleep At Night. But they also give you a breather with Bring It Down Front. On the song-writing front, they’re not going to set the world on fire, but they’ll more than likely play knock-out live shows.
La Jovenc
Perverse or Polymorphous (GDM)
The formula: crooning plus odd spoken word (in possibly a French accent?), over a bizarre selection of music, which jumps about all over the place. He croons over abstract dubstep/ electronica, then he talks love over a jumbledup striptease track. And there’s also cheesy Euro-dance, with Come In From Out of the Rain, suitable for fetish nights. His acid breakbeat works strangely well with his verbal ranting, as shown on Fat Slut Scot Mod and Moonglow. Whether or not his mentalist antics are genuine, the fact that he seems to be deliberately avoiding any particular type of an audience deserves respect. As does the line “Fatty loves to be in love, perhaps when in the car plays rhythm’n’soul”
Laura Williams
Shonen Knife/Osaka Ramones A Tribute To The Ramones
(Damnably) Following the release of another album of original material, Shonen Knife put their Osaka Ramones hats on to record a tribute to the band which inspires them. Japan has always embraced alternative British music, from the punk of the 70s to the sugarpop indie of the 90s. Here we have an initially twee tribute to The Ramones, which develops into a pretty damn good record in its own right. The opening track (and one of The Ramones most famous hits) Blitzkrieg Pop is a tad cringeworthy, sounding like some karaoke kiosk party a la Lost In Translation, however We Want The Airwaves and The KKK Took My Baby Away are masterful covers, arguably better than the originals. They’ve also got the iconic Sheena Is A Punk Rocker and Psycho Therapy covered, literally.
Kate McGill Replaced
(Cafe Nero) Plymouth songstress Kate McGill is getting millions of hits on Youtube and has the backing of some of the big boys of retail including Tesco and Cafe Nero, which is selling her debut album and hosting instore gigs nationwide, But, does she live up to this unusual hype? Well, she sure can sing - with a voice which sits somewhere between Emmy the Great and Eva Cassidy. Despite being fairly young, like Laura Marling, her songs and lyrics have a surprising maturity about them. The title track is a sweet Norah Jones esque ballad and the rest of the album follows suit. She may not change the world but she might give fellow Devonian Joss Stone a run for her money.
Baxter Dury Happy Soup
(Domino) Having missed Baxter support Pulp in London last month (damn you Megabus!), I was eager to see what he was all about. Here we have a very sporadic album, littered with different sounds. Of course, there’s evidence of his rich musical heritage in there (as the son of Ian Dury, there’s undeniable elements of that iconic deep, cockney drawl) but the overarching 80s tones on this record are the Squeeze esque electro pop, narrated by a half spoken/half sung tale. At his best, vocally, there are hints of Nick Cave and Ian Curtis but for the most part, the formula is simple - sweet female vocals, accompanied by an intriguing and very soothing deep voice.
Von Bartha Von Bartha
(Self-released) From the former singer of York’s Hijack Oscar (finalists in Channel 4‘s 2007’s Orange Unsigned Music), comes Von Bartha. The Bristol band are already making waves in the city. Here we have dark and brooding indie with bite, the heavy undertones compliment the confrontational but compelling vocals perfectly, with Emma Keaveney-Roys yelling ‘wipe that smile right off your face’ during the opening track Bod to catchy drums and a funky bass line. Vocally there’s a lot going on. Tank has the attitude and tone of I’m Just A Girl era Gwen Stefani, while Cover Your Mouth has sniffs of PJ Harvey. But as fab as this mini album is, the best bit is it only costs £1 to download on Bandcamp! www.247magazine.co.uk

Ugly Duckling
Moving at Breakneck Speed
(Special Records) The return of the evergreen ducklings, and like they say in their interview this month, still sounding fresh as when they first came out. With some excellent sample finds by Einstein and nice punchy beats the production on this still does it for me. These guys really stand out as rare survivors whilst many of their peers have fallen by the wayside, these guys deserve some kind of award for sticking to the script, and retaining the original elements of hip hop. If you haven’t done so already you really should check these guys out live, playing in both Exeter ( cavern )and Plymouth ( ride cafe ) in october this album, like those gigs, both essential.
Prince Fatty meets Mutant HiFi Return of Gringo
(Mr Bongo Records) With every album release my resistance to modern reggae is being broken down by Prince Fatty, I like my reggae made in Jamaica, I want the guy who made it to use a shoestring budget and genius creativity to blow me away, instead Prince Fatty is making me adjust my view. This is another top album, the theme is an old one, reggae stars have long been in love with gangsters and westerns, adopting dj names and covering the soundtracks to Sergio Leone films, this is a return to that era and a worthy one. Wicked spaghetti western feel with a touch of surf ska. If you want to be transported to a sunnier clime, like quality reggae or just want to dip your toe in then this album is for you.
Buraka Som Sistema Komba
(Rough Trade) There was a time when these guys were the next big thing, everyone was talking about how Kudoro was going to be massive. So how do they deal with their second studio album? A well produced album with great vocals and decent hooks. A few of these tracks would fit right into a UK funky set and no one would notice the join, unless I was mixing it maybe.. Most of the production is quite simple in it’s execution but that doesn’t make it bang any less. Apparently ‘komba’ is a ritual that happens when someone dies, tell you what, when I die ship me out to Angola and let’s party like this.
Rustie
Glass Swords
(Warp) If me and Rustie were on top trump cards we would be complete opposites. Under the section ‘love for big sing along dance records’ I would be up in the 90s he would be around the 20s, but on love for Japanese prog rock it would be reversed, under original musical ability I would be about 7 he would be up in the high 80s, so you would think on paper I wouldn’t enjoy this album, in fact we’d be sitting in completely different parts of the musical church. Then he goes and ruins my point by one - working with Bristol’s Joker, who we all know is a god and two - making an awesome catchy album that even someone who likes Jermaine Stewart can enjoy. A raft of widespread musical influences, dubstep, 80s funk, trance and even some french house appeal, which again shouldn’t work as one album but he’s taken all the best bits. Bugger. for those who don’t like Jermaine Stewart and those that do. www.247magazine.co.uk
Louk
Green Velvet
Flash (The Advent + Industryalizer Mix) (Cajual) It’s always nice to have a modern remix of a timeless classic. When this dark ditty first surfaced years ago, it caused a massive stir and is in the all time top 10 of many techno DJs. Portugal’s production duo of The Advent and Industyalizer take the original, retain all its’ charm and add their own unique sub heavy, percussive laden slant on things. The kick on this is massive and it really did the damage at Lakota in Bristol this month when I played it as my first tune! Definitely one to screw with some heads.
Iain Cross
Music Maker (Atmosphere) Atmosphere resident and South West wonder Iain, delivers yet another epic track on the first of many releases to come from the label of Seaton’s leading hard trance & techno night. As usual with Iain’s material, this has a hard edge to it and high levels of production finesse. Combined with an eerie vocal and a gorgeous melody and this one works well in the peak time. Arrangement wise it’s unfortunately nothing new, but who cares as a good track is a good track and this certainly rocks the floor.
David Moleon
Sublime (Patterns) I first heard this on a D.A.V.E The Drummer mix, thinking it was just one track, then saw it was a slammin’ eight tracker, where nearly all the tracks are more than worthy of a play. The diversity here is quite strong, if you want a pack of essential, driving techno productions that can adapt for early warm up material right through to the peak time then this is a release for you. Choice cuts for my sets are ‘Distance Groove’ and ‘AK47’, which are two tracks that dive straight in at the deep end.
Geck-E
Ehh Yeah (Therabyte) Holland’s Rik Van Dam shows his diversity as a producer here once more, donning his ‘Geck-E’ guise in a rather refreshing change from the harder Geck-O material (which often gets played towards the end of my sets). Here he delivers a track which fuses techno, electro and trance all in one, with hugely effective female vocals, a gritty Tomcraft-esque riff and one punchy kick and bass. Imagine a fusion between Ferry Corsten, Tomcraft and Kamui, but with a harder edge and the results are this little crossover monster that works very well in my sets.

Backbone
Gouranga
www.facebook.com/gourangamusic Amongst Bristol neo-grungers, Gouranga’s list of influences there’s only one that leaps off the page in a blood-stained plaid shirt. Hell, their name even rhymes with Nirvana. Sort of. The band’s debut EP ‘Keep Your Colours’ is bursting with that self-same twin assault of psychotic guitars and dear-diary angst but without the Big Tunes or nihilist attitude necessary to hook people in. ‘Rose And Time’’s attempt to sound like an ‘In Utero’ off-cut, right down to the vocal desperation, is noble yet hollow. If Gouranga could tap into the same clotted, driven soulforce of their heroes they might be in with a shout. Until then, it’s a case of imitation, flattery and little else.
The Patrick James Pearson Band
www.patrickjamespearson.co.uk Plymouth parvenus, The PJP Band, will have been on tour with Hard Fi by the time you read this review. By ‘on tour’ I mean, blowing them away every night with works of wonder like ‘Reasons For Moving On’ and the mellifluous ‘Wild Eyes’: cosmic, keyboard driven stomps that sound like a frenzied John Lennon fronting a more accessible Wolf Parade. This new EP shines an incandescent light, once again, on Patrick’s innumerable songwriting strengths and on the band’s sensitive rendering; the pure ‘Sgt Peppers’ pomp of ‘Analog To Digital’, for instance, is both moving and bombastic. For a band to be this damn good at this early stage can only mean one thing - inevitable world domination.
Seeyellow
www.seeyellow.co.uk The Seeyellow manifesto goes thus: one snare, one acoustic guitar, one electric guitar, one bass, one vocal and 24 songs in one half-hour period. It’s a fantastic ethos backed up with conscientious and confessional lyrics dealing with self-development, the lack of it and the chasm between the two. ‘Too Little Too Late’, in particular, is a moving ode to the disappointment of adulthood, while ‘Don’t Lie’ lambasts one-upmanship with the declaration: “I don’t think it’s good that we think so much of ourselves”. Musically, there are moments, ‘Petit 4’’s bass-driven bridge for example, where the Plymouth band hit upon something resembling genius. This is heartfelt, passionate, lucid underground pop music with a fresh angle. Dive in.
Kernuyck
www.kernuyck.bigcartel.com Kernow’s finest metal export, Kernuyck, may pride themselves on the recording techniques employed throughout their new album ‘KAOS’ but there’s no getting away from the derivative nature of the music contained therein. Metallica certainly spring to mind. Again and again. Especially in that Hetfield-esque, affected vocal scowl, which does little to pull the listener in. It’s like an over-egged pudding but using organic free range eggs: they’ve got the premium goods but no sense of subtlety. ‘Cursed’, for instance, is brilliantly played but tends to elicit sniggers because of its insistence on appealing to predictable metal cliches. Still, their talent is evident, and less discerning metal fans - of which there are thousands - will love it. magazine | 31

Film ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: SECRET OF THE UNICORN (3D)
MUST
SEE
Released: 26 October Dir: Steven Spielberg Starring: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost 2011/US/TBC Combining three of the best stories from the title character’s backlog, the film charts Tintin’s (Jamie Bell) first encounter with Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) and the discovery of a clue to the treasure of his ancestors. They set out to find it with protection from a prison escapee who is trying to get the treasure, as well as Detectives Thompson and Thomson (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost). Steven Spielberg helms his first 3D feature and this will hopefully be nothing short of spectacular.
The Best of the Rest.... ANONYMOUS (12A) Released: 28 October Director: Roland Emmerich Starring: Rhys Ifans, Vanesa Redgrave, Joely Richardson and David Thewlis 2011/UK/130 min If you just saw the title and the director’s name (he helmed Independence Day and 2012) you would forgiven for thinking this was some mega-plotted, apocalyptic, spy thriller. But in an odd turn of events this is actually a political thriller advancing the theory that it was in fact Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford who penned Shakespeare’s plays. It’s set against the backdrop of the succession of Queen Elizabeth I, and the rebellion against her, and should be interesting diversion from the other 3D extravaganzas dominating the multiplexes.
FOOTLOOSE (TBC) Released: 14 October Dir: Craig Brewer Starring: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough and Dennis Quaid 2011/US/TBC This classic bit of 80’s cheese has been remade with a thoroughly modern twist. Less Kevin Bacon more Kenny Wormald (who the hell is he???). Anyway, City kid Ren McCormack moves to a small town where rock ‘n’ roll and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the populace. It must surely feature the
classic title song or I wouldn’t bother getting up out of the armchair to see this one. View with caution!
SOLD (12A) Released: 14 October Dir: Morgan Spurlock Starring: Morgan Spurlock, JJ Abrams, Noam Chomsky 2011/US/90 min The guy from Supersize Me returns to take his sartorial documentary style to the world of product placement in film-making (an interesting diversion for the man who did just as much to promote McDonalds as he did to discourage people from the brand in this previous film). He talks to everyone from philosophers like Noam Chomsky to business tycoons like Donald Trump to get an insight into the world of marketing and branding in the films and television shows we all love.

Live The more luck you have the worse you’ll get
When it rains at Boardmasters Festival what do you do (12th Aug)? Well you go to watch THE SKINTS in one of the marquees, of course. But you get there only to find a queue to get in. A queue. At a festival. To see a band you’ve already paid for. With doormen on the ‘gate’. What a fucking joke. Melodic punk beauties, BANGERS, sophisticated rockers, SUITE NOIR, and shouty shredders, VESSELS, offered temporary relief from the overpriced food and underwhelming ethos. With CORY BRANAN refused entry into the country (no work permit!) we zig-zagged across the country alongside SAM RUSSO on our debut acoustic tour (14-20th Aug). The finest ginger-bearded dude you’d ever want to meet, Russo’s soft country confessionals were delivered with a humble hue and a wry smile. Elsewhere, JAMES HULL rattled the fuck out of his guitar and voicebox; APOLOGIES I HAVE NONE were epic and heroic; THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS kept their hardcore on a tight leash; THE BREADCHASERS gave roots-rock a modern polish; GREAT CYNICS soothed our weary souls, and EL MORGAN’s melancholic coo betrayed a heart of hope. Back home, THE FLATLINERS peddled their Canadian crunch to a modest Plymouth crowd but it was the double-whammy of THE ARTERIES’ riffmungous melodies and OK PILOT’s menacing rock’n’roll snarl that truly impressed (White Rabbit, 30th August). Ivylive Festival (Ivybridge) and Plymouth Punx Picnic (guess) fell on the same weekend but that didn’t stop us from making the commute. The first night of the Picnic offered up a variety of guitar-driven delights including GUNS UNDER THE TABLE’s nervy, chest-beating stoner thrust and BEARFIGHT’s merciless barrage of rabid, melody-strewn, nu-millennial punk (8th Sept). The next day at Ivylive, CROWNS, were raising the flag for dog-eared folk-punk but they were hardly inventive enough to give Shane MacGowan any sleepless nights; while headliners, REEF, milked their past for all it was worth. Back at Voodoo Lounge in Plymouth, THE DEVILRIDERS’ were turning rockabilly into a jukebox cover party, Torquay’s HUSBANDS & KNIVES made a rapid-fire racket, and the evergreen BUS STATION LOONIES proffered perennial agit-cabaret groove to good, frugging effect. Saturday afternoon, back in Ivybridge, and THE PATRICK JAMES PEARSON BAND are adding spice to the chilly air with keyboard-driven sub-pop perfection, followed by a blissfully triumphant turn by London lords of reggae-town, THE SKINTS (10th Sept). And not a disgruntled queue in sight. Plymouth hardcore quartet, DEAD POETS, held their own with a juggernaut of developed noise; and COSMO JARVIS united everyone with painfully honest, multi-faceted folk-pop musings. Which was rather unfortunate for Exeter’s THE COMPUTERS whose thrilling punk’n’roll revue was enjoyed by a select few. They played out of their white-clothed skins regardless. The ever-reliable KING BLUES wrapped things up with a politically-charged sonic assault, addressing the absurdity of the army cadets who were busying themselves around the site like a military PR exercise. We blagged a lift back to town to catch EASTFIELD’s technicolour positivity and surrealist-punks, ANAL BEARD, whose off-beat humour might have been too cerebral for the cider-saturated masses (Voodoo Lounge). The final day of the Picnic was held at the Nowhere Inn as nonchalant new students and their uptight parents were busy driving around the area in preparation for University life (11th Sept). ROOM 4 1 MORE’s upbeat hardcore, WOB’s pop-punk and SILENT ROUTINE’s new wave scree may not have rattled the freshers too much, but I’m sure MONITOR’s nihilist post-punk might have raised an eyebrow. Swindon duo, 2 SICK MONKEYS, made the biggest impression, not just via their drum and fuzz-bass onslaught but also thanks to singer/bassist Pete Butler’s rabidly funny diatribe against American foreign policy and drunken hecklers. Marvellous. See-ya bye. Backbone (johnsycash@yahoo.co.uk)
