NEWS Gold Coast Festival Masked Ball success
Undoubtedly THE best Masked Ball yet, the main tent was rocking all night with Japayork, and Ou est le Swimming Pool going nuts, and the Masked Ball Inn went down a storm as we literally had to peel ourselves away from the Sega Megadrive and Sonic at 6am. Sir Vinyl of the Fattest and Robin Parris had the place jumping from sunset to sunrise and the 3Cs Bboys turned up to throw some shapes. The courtyard at Beaconham Palace housed a giant turntable dance podium, whilst inside the castle walls, the throne was rocked by Residential Dance Home DJ’s and friends. Even the occasional short shower didn’t dampen the spirit, and some lucky party goers found solace in the secret spaceship shot bar located through the dragons mouth, created by the wonderkids from Barnfest. The organisers wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who contributed to make this event so special and successful. They said “We shall return for a new Masked Ball 2011 with more space for more people and a new site”.

Aimed at getting girls surfing, the events are the perfect addition to summer life in the South West, so 247 Magazine hooked up with a couple of Rip Curl’s pro riders for a chat about life as a surf sista! We chatted to 3 times World Champion Steph Gilmore, and Tahitian longboarder and eco-warrior Hanalei Reponty during the recent Swatch Girls Pro WQS event in Hossegor, France. Australian Steph Gilmore is one of the top female surfers in the world. Currently riding high with three world championship titles under her belt, she’s still only 22. So what does it take for a girl to succeed in what has been a hugely male dominated sport for years? Steph grins. “The first time I competed professionally, all I wanted to do was impress the people on the beach. I still do. With the younger generation of girls coming through with a ‘new wave’ of innovative surfing, the level of competition is getting harder to beat. Essential elements will always be balance, patience, ocean knowledge and trust of your own instinct, and of course a love for what you do.” Surfing isn’t just about winning world titles though (sorry Steph). As closely linked to nature as the sport is, no surfer can ignore the effects of human activity on their natural playground – the sea. Tahitian longboarder Hanalei Reponty is a dedicated supporter of Rip Curl’s strong eco-friendly stance, and like all their other events, Rip Curl will be offsetting carbon emissions for the Girls Tour events. They’ll also be recycling all waste possible, as well as making sure that the beaches are left clean post event. Hanalei explains more. “I am really proud of representing Rip Curl – we share the same environmental values. They put in a really big effort to minimize pollution on our planet and in our oceans, which I believe is fantastic. Surfing is an amazing combination of sport, nature and freedom.” Recently, Hanalei took part in a trip to research corals as part of Rip Curl’s Coral Guard Project – find out more about the trip, and what Rip Curl are doing to protect coral at http://www.ripcurl. eu/index.php?coralguard_girls.
Girls who attend are always super stoked to learn how to surf and it makes me so happy to see girls in the water enjoying themselves! Surfing is a lot of fun and is not only reserved for boys. It is hard to get into surfing, as it requires a lot of equipment (board/wetsuit/wax/fins/ leash) - so it might be easier to start with a surf school that provides all of that for you, but believe me it is worth it. Of course at first, it is hard. No one rode their first wave perfectly. Surfing takes a little motivation, but once you’re hooked up I swear you won’t put your board down. And it is just really cool to be in the water having a good time with friends, sharing waves and good fun!” Make sure you check out the Girls Tour website to try winning a holiday with their digital mixing deck. Mix Hawaiian Tropic’s sounds (like the ukulele, or crashing waves), with Rip Curl’s rock rhythms (electric guitar, drums) to create your own tunes. Record them and post them on your Facebook profile to obtain as many votes as possible. The highest scoring entries can win all sorts of goodies… including a weekend away with the Rip Curl girls to one of the tour stops – the tour has dates across Europe this summer, including stopping off in Newquay on 10th/11th July and Bournemouth on 13th/14th July. More info and sign up at www.girlstour2010.com To celebrate all things surfing, we have five Girls Tour Gift Packs to giveaway. Each pack contains a Rip Curl T-shirt, a Make Up Pocket and goodies from Hawaiian Tropic to help you avoid getting sun damaged skin. To be in with a chance of winning, just go to www.247magazine.co.uk and enter the RIP CURL competition. Closing Date 30 June.
Hanalei continued, “Part of my work with Rip Curl is attending important events, like the Rip Curl Girls Tour. I think the tour is terrific!

FOR THE FOURTH INSTALMENT OF OUR PRESSPACK SESSIONS, JOE BIDDLE FROM PRESSPACK STUDIOS TALKS TO JOSIE GHOST, LEAD-SINGER OF FAST-RISING SOUTH WEST STARS, JOSIE AND THE LOVECATS. Your favourite magazine awarded them with the prestigious demo of the month title, describing their music as “imaginative, intelligent and bursting with idiosyncrasies”. since then, it’s been happening very quickly for the quirky and inventive plymouth band, who have gone from local favourites to appearances at glastonbury festival, a support slot for vampire weekend and a self-released single and ep and it’s all this month. the band have been playing for just over a year, but the line-up has recently gone through a significant change, with josie remaining as the only original member. the band consists of josie ghost on lead vocals and keyboards, josie boucharde on bass/backing vocals, sam fry on drums and simon dobson on trumpet, korg and backing vocals. to see the video of this interview in full, head to the 247 website. Your debut single is called Brother; tell us about that Yes, and it’s about my brother. I guess it’s a really personal song, because he’s going through a tough time he’s got OCD. We’re a very close family, and he was also the drummer of the band an amazing drummer. He’s a real inspiration, so it’s a message to him.
I hate that question, but I know you have to do it. I’m waiting for someone to tell ME what they think! It’s interesting, because you have to tell people what your music sounds like, but I think you should listen to it and tell me what it sounds like! I can definitely see the Kate Bush reference, although she’s not a direct influence on me, and I haven’t listened to her but I know she’s amazing. I get likened quite a lot to Tori Amos and PJ Harvey, and again, they’ve not been an influence on me. I’m not aiming a direction: I just write the way
LIKENED “I GET QUITE A LOT TO TORI AMOS AND PJ HARVEY, BUT AGAIN, THEY’VE NOT BEEN AN INFLUENCE ON ME.
I write and that’s the way it comes across. I don’t know if that makes it original or not. With the old line-up, we tended to sound more acoustic and storytelling, but the new band is a lot more punky.
One of the signature qualities about your sound is that you use a harmoniser. Yes, it was a discovery about six months ago. It hooks up into your keyboard, you plug your microphone into it and it will harmonise your vocals live in four parts. I use it to the fore, so that when it comes in it’s almost like another instrument. I don’t think there’s many people doing that, so it’s become quite characteristic of our sound. What’s next for Josie and the Lovecats? June is our big month, because we’re releasing the EP, the single and we’re going on a mini tour before making our two-date appearance at Glastonbury Festival. I’ve also been working with Kat Marsh. I identify with her, so it’s been really good hooking up with her. Josie and the Lovecats have their debut single Brother plus their 6-track EP My Heart’s an Idiot, both released digitally on the 11th, available from iTunes, Play.com Catch them supporting Vampire Weekend at Eden Sessions, St Austell on the 24th. They play two dates at Glastonbury Festival: Friday 25th (Avalon Café, 9pm) and Sunday 27th (Avalon Café 4.30pm) You can also catch them at Ride Café, Plymouth on Saturday 19th, 8pm.
More info at: And it’s very piano-driven, which is worth pointing out www.myspace.com/josieandthegiants Yes, there’s no guitar. I play the piano and sing, which can be quite www.presspackstudios.com challenging because I’m not free to walk How would you pigeonhole your music around the stage. We’ve got a few songs where I don’t play keys for a verse, but into a category? Ty is an UK based international Hip Hop artist who is best known and loved for his lyrical honesty, ability to conjure emotion-fuelled poetry out of every day realities, his dynamic live shows and eclectic sense of musicality, which never really did fit comfortably in to a musical box. Some may have thought him unwise not to jump on various bandwagons, but maintaining his independence and artistic integrity has allowed Ty the space to make consistent and uncompromised classic albums for the past decade. His new album, Special Kind of Fool is a cheeky hint that the wisest course is to be yourself and follow your passions in life, no matter what others might say about you. We caught up with him ahead of his Cornwall show at the beginning of July.
going through a set of emotions and feelings and being positive about music.
Who have been your main influences? It’s really been my hip hop experiences from the 80’s and beyond, the artists, the movements, the ups and downs and the creative brilliance that I have seen inside the music. This includes the flipping of samples and the creative evolutions of music videos in general thru rap have all been influences.
What can people expect from your live show? The live show will be LIVE FULLA VIBES!!! WITH SOME FUN THROWN IN.. HOPEFULLY THE SOUL ELEMENT WILL BE IN EFFECT!
What are your memories of performing in Cornwall? Ah, Cornwall I have loads of memories! I remember first coming down to play Cornwall with Keith Lawrence and the show was crazy, full of vibes. My first gig was really small but I had my hand on the ceiling the whole time because of the jumping around, it was an absolute sweatbox. The next time we returned to a bigger venue with the band, and that WAS MADDNNNESS!!! After I play in Cornwall, I always How would you describe your style of music? want to stay around for a few I would describe my style of hip hop as hip hop days after the show because of music, but different in the terms that I don’t just the whole Cornish vibe. Once, I settle with the sterotypical image or banter of opened up my window and saw the normal rappers. I’m all about the songs and the words Land’s End at the end of the arrangement, the meaning and the sentiment! I garden. Everybody knows the saying from make the type of music that would probably best be described as the UK slice of the native tongue era hip Land’s End to John O’Groats and here I was! I found it funny that here I was, finally hop but updated to fit now, that can’t be affected by at the end of the country. record companies marketing demands!
How did you get involved in music in the beginning? I got involved in music because I loved it, I loved to dance to it, I loved to memorise the words of my favourite rappers, I loved to find out who made what, who did what and where it was made and who mixed it and who engineered it and why. It’s about the mechanics of why certain music happened, for example, Big Daddy Kane and Marley Marl and Biz Markie - the relationships with the people, it all intrigued me. Tell us about your new album This is my fourth album, I had to go through something special to be enthusiastic about making music again for this album, as I’d been diagnosed with diabetes a while ago and that thing can really throw you off track, mentally. I’ve really enjoyed the process of this album, it was basically built out of www.247magazine.co.uk

Bustin’ Out 1982: New Wave to New Beat Vol 2 (Year Zero)
Early developments in electronic music, proving that there was more to the ‘80s than crap haircuts and loathsome Duran Duran videos. There’s serious digital punk from Front 242 and Die Krupps, Man Parrish deliver an early electro blueprint, Mark Stewart gets experimental and there’s Gary Numan’s fretless bass stomp of Music For Chameleons. Highlight: Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force’s timeless electro-hip-hop classic, Planet Rock. Today’s music constantly relies on ideas from the past, so despite cheesy drum machines, Bustin’ Out is an educational listen. Arash Torabi
Doves
The Places Between: The Best of Doves (Heavenly Recordings)
Over the last two decades, Heavenly Recordings has launched the careers of some of this country’s most innovative artists. Some have sold well (Manic Street Preachers & Magic Numbers) while others have been cruelly denied the limelight (The Rockingbirds and The Loose Salute) The Doves, however, haven’t done too bad. They’ve achieved commercial success by maintaining their own quirky creative process: psychedelic, cinematic and heavy on the melody. Here’s a glance back at their career, including the genius singles Kingdome of Rust, Pounding and Black & White Town. A band with heart and soul. Arash Torabi
Television Personalities
A Memory is Better Than Nothing (Rocket Girl)
TVPs man Daniel Treacy is the UK’s best-kept secret. Although he’s had tribute albums recorded in his honour, his rough & ready approach has kept him a cult hero. Television Personalities are amongst the most influential bands of our time, and without having to rely too much on past glories, this album stands up on its own. Despite some experimental numbers, he can still deliver the heart-wrenching songs that we love him for. The Girl in the Hand Me Down Clothes and She’s My Yoko could easily belong on earlier albums such as The Painted Word. Arash Torabi
Kah
More Than Dawn (Joy Lane Music)
Kah (pronounced “Car”) is a London-based singer, writer and producer who deals in electronica with a difference. Her dreamy voice is both sexy and eerie, and her approach to music is unique. Some of her songs have instant appeal, like the spooky Wanting to be Haunted and the single, Fugitive, while others

sway towards more complex song structures. Playing all the parts herself, Kah casts a close eye to production, giving the songs a textured feel. Her use of sound and her sense of rhythm are also impeccable. A masterpiece from a deeply talented young woman. Arash Torabi
Jeye Severe The Hierarchy (Lish Media)
Just when I thought I’d grown too old and cynical to get excited about a rapper, let alone a UK rapper, along comes Jeye Severe to make me step back and kiss myself. I’ve not eagerly anticipated a debut release since the glory days of Rawkus with Mos Def, Talib and Mr Monch. This guy’s album is gonna be so so dope. I first heard him on a Ras Kwame show and immediately made me pay more attention. On this, his first mixtape, he has quality producers, no big names but they lay a decent foundation for Mr Severe to do what he does, in fact this guy could recite the phone book and I’m sure I’d be hooked by his flow. UK hip hop of the highest order. If you have never bought something on my recommendation alone then this is the time, in his words he’s “here to save the game like a memory card”. UK hip hop of the highest order. Aldo Vanucci
Virus Syndicate The Breakout Trilogy (Virus Syndicate records)
These guys have been mentioned on more than one occasion in these hallowed pages. It seems that the pages of time have turned in their favour and now is their moment. Where the music industry is right now it appears that every bright shining light from the grime scene has seen the crossover production as the direction to take, even Roll Deep have a record Dj Sammy would be proud of for god’s sake. So it’s good to hear a grime / UK hip hop crew who still have that raw edge and sound that retains the energy of grime without thinking they need to compete with radio one playlists. If you like raw UK flows and productions with head nods towards dubstep production and a very non pop approach this album is for you. Aldo Vanucci
Clan Edison Clan Edison (self release)
With the spirit of 16 Horsepower and Gallon Drunk coursing through their veins, Southern French trio, Clan Edison, unleash an album of dark portent and slashing blues-punk designed to gleefully unnerve. Drawing from a deep well of misanthrope rock, ‘Eternity’ pulsates with a sinister swagger that Nick Cave would be proud of, while ‘Orvietan’ pushes their bourbon-soaked conquest into angrier territory. Unknown in this country, CE deserve your attention by dint of their Gallic coolness. Écouter! Backbone

The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster Blood & Fire (Black)
Back with a vengeance! And in an age of ten-a-penny Britpunk bands with tattoo sponsorships, Guy McKnight and co could be more relevant than ever. Things really begin to thrill with the paranoiac throb of ‘Mission From God’, and by the time you’re reeling from the suckerpunch that is ‘Man For All Seasons’, the Brighton gothaholics have hijacked your arteries and rerouted your blood cells straight to their bleak heart. Fuck Gallows et al, this is what punk rock sounds like when it isn’t seeking kudos from Kerrang. Backbone
Seth Lakeman Hearts And Minds (Relentless)
It’s all a bit local television newsdesk chez Lakeman these days. Sentimental songs about soldiers (‘Spinning Days’), bankers (the title track and new single) and toilers (‘Hard Working Man’) rub shoulders with easily digestible, fiddlesome stomps and Seth’s windswept warble to create an album that mirrors our times but refuses to get righteous on our ass. Of course, it’ll be lapped up by ardent fans who like nothing more than an unchallenging album that loyally adheres to the neo-folk formula. Backbone
The Gaslight Anthem American Slang
(Side One Dummy) How the hell is ‘American Slang’ a dramatic leap? On what criteria is this statement based? No, this is just The Gaslight Anthem doing what they do best: stealing Springsteen’s plaintive back catalogue and reframing it in simple modern rock language with a little bit of punk soul brotherliness to appease the old fans. Predictably, Brian Fallon laments the passing of time, nostalgia pouring from every snare snap and howled refrain, but nothing here holds a candle to ‘The ’59 Sound’. Underwhelming. Backbone
Tiesto
Magikal Journey: The Hits Collection 1998 – 2008 (Nebula)
Global superstar DJ and producer, Tiesto needs no introduction - he is on top of his game, having spent 12yrs carefully crafting his sound and career with shows like opening the Olympics amongst other things. Two CD s of dancefloor classics and floorfillers from the past ten years, if you’re a trance fan, then this compilation is full of memories direct from clubland. NME
DEMOS DEMO OF THE MONTH Teignmouth indie-rockers, THE QUAILS, have clearly set their sights on the big time. Recorded at Sawmills Studios, their debut album, ‘Master Of Imperfection’, knows when to rock (‘Fever’, the title track) knows when to take stock (‘Argentina’) but never quite knows how to grab the listener by the proverbial cock and lead them giddily to the gates of Valhalla (although the bridge in ‘I Know Myself’ comes close). They’re awesome musicians – check the Queen tribute during ‘For The Good Times‘ – and Dan Steer is a very fine songwriter with a voice to match, but they’ve yet to stumble upon greatness. If they maintain this standard and keep the faith it could be pretty soon. (Released through Like The Sound Records - www.thequails.co.uk)
ROCK SHOW DEMO OF THE MONTH Transgression // Escape The Plagues EP TRANSGRESSION are a Plymouth five piece force to be reckoned with mixing classic thrash riffage with a more progressive angry sound of modern times where they wouldnt be out of place in a line up that included Sylosis,August Burns Red and Metallica. For a band that haven’t been going more than a year they have a sound and feel of an act that a comfortable with each other talents and have been since day one. Be sure to catch there live shows this summe for more info on them and to watch there video visit www.myspace.com/transgressionuk where you can hear plenty more from them. Mike James ***DON’T FORGET*** you can email your tracks to Mike James of the Rock Show along with gig listings and band bios to:rockshow@phonic.fm. The new release from the laudable onec label is a two disc, experimental poetry package from MARK GREENWOOD, a man whose streaming prose, delivered in an unforgiving North East accent, is as perpetually perplexing as it is pleasing. ‘White Mice, All Colours’ features 19 pieces of cryptic, absurdist and esoteric concoctions recited slowly, fragmented, with resignation or under duress; set to an array of analogue drones and tones. Exploring the darker sides of identity, chance and otherness, there are snippets of coded insight here that reveal a healthy and brilliantly skewered mind at work, although lines like “200 collated foreskins dangle from the arm” (‘Crouching Down’) take some getting used to. http://greenwood. dysfunction.de Post-rock tubthumper and Elliot Whale Boy mainstay, STEVE STRONG, branches out further into the realms of sonic self-discovery with a solo demo EP, ‘Safety In Numbers’. It’s a deceptively dreamy, chiefly instrumental set of post-rock soundscapes that, for the most part, centres around cyclical melancholic guitar motifs with shuffling drum patterns that dodge and dive throughout the musical passages like a kid with ADHD. Sometimes it works perfectly (the awesome ‘One Hand One Knee One Foot At A Time’); other times you feel like you’re being prodded with little sticks (the frenetic title track, which is nothing if not ambitious). As with all Steve Strong’s projects, you feel that the journey is half the fun. www.myspace.com/stavrossewb
Plymouth grindermen, WILLE & THE BANDITS, are undoubtedly a band with a real passion for their slide blues manoeuvres but on the band’s debut album proper, ‘New Breed’ (released through
URM Records), I’m just not feeling it enough. That could have something to do with Wille Edwards’ voice: a gravelly Joe Cocker grumble that tends to edge way too close to parody, especially on ‘Galloping Horses’; while on the likes of ‘Country Girl’, he resorts to a wimpering, Deep South coo that begins to grate after a while. The musicianship is clearly competent and all the songs have moments of authentic blooze-power, but ‘New Breed’ feels like the work of a band who haven’t been put in a position where they need to challenge themselves much. Album number two, you feel, could be killer.

Meanwhile over on Murdoch-Space...
Cornish yoof rockers, I AM LIZARD, may be a little clunky and graceless but their new EP, ‘Who Are You’, showcases decent enough, adolescent new wave tuneage that at least alludes to the importance of structure and form. In other words, pretty neat.

Plymouth hardcore punks, DEAD POETS, are much better when they’re screaming their balls dry than when they’re harmonising like polite emo chaps. Great riffs, punchy as fuck, well worth a listen, especially the Bronx-like ‘Sit Down’. www.myspace.com/deadpoetsplymouth
I avoid ska-punk like the plague but South Wales tykes, DETACHED, slipped through the net by dint of the fact that they’ve played with N-Dubz. Alas, their EP, ‘None The Wiser’, is the same old deal: dated, brassy, thrashy jollity and not a decent tune in sight. Boo. www.myspace.com/detachedska
The debut EP from Penzance prog-metallers, KAIDEKA, entitled ‘Puppets To The Parasites’, is a bitter, bilious affair that pays homage to Machine Head et al. ‘Drowning’ goes one better with an intro straight out of an Edgar Allen Poe novel. www.myspace.com/kaideka
Bristol-based chanteuse, LENNY SAVAGE, is something of a revelation. Flirting with all things jazz, folk, swing, rock, world and synth-pop, her voice flits between Tori Amos mellifluousness and gin-joint diva at will. Debut album, ‘Quaintrelle’, out now. www.myspace.com/lennysavage

a variety of styles which explore notions of preserving moments in time. Last performed by the Company in 1981, Cranko’s lively, often comical work, Brouillards, danced to nine of Debussy’s piano preludes, makes its return to the repertory. Plus, taking inspiration from a medieval poem and woodcut depicting the ‘Danse macabre’, Dance House was prompted by the early death of a friend and colleague who was a dancer. Despite its light, witty tone, Shostakovich’s music has darker resonances, which Bintley fully explores in this poignant reinterpretation of the ‘Dance of Death’.

Tue.08
LIVE Fri.11 Exeter Amidst the withered flora of modern pop there are a handful of visionaries doing their level best to raise our consciousness with unbridled zeal and intelligence. One such talent is punk revisionist, TED LEO (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 7th May), although you probably don’t know this because you’re too busy fingering the twitching anus of the interminably groovy, acoustic-warbler-with-sunny-disposition coterie to notice. Ted Leo and band (The Pharmacists) are the point where love and rage meet in perfect sync; where songs are short, spiky, yet brimming with anarchist positivity and tunes to die for. Humble, righteous and generous of heart, it doesn’t get much better. In equally glorious fettle were revitalised Plymo quintet, CONSOLATION PRIZEFIGHTER, who, judging by the depth, density and potency of their new songs, have certainly not been idle during the hiatus. Openers, THE HACKS, allowed a fondness for rockabilly and new wave to pepper their smart hooks – somewhere between The Living End and Elvis Costello – but they’re no mere copyists. There’s beauty up in those Great Lakes, none more so than Indiana countryman, AUSTIN LUCAS. Thanks to a politico-punk heritage and an upbringing steeped in bluegrass and Americana, the man’s songs are both brutally romantic and sensitively radical, with acoustic guitar skills that are as graceful as the fiercely poetic words that fall out of his mouth. It’s no exaggeration to state that he commands the kind of attention usually attributed to prophets and hypnotists – especially at K-Fest in Kingston where, after a stunning unplugged set, the whole crowd followed Austin outside the venue to hear him play two extra songs while the next band were setting up inside. A rare treasure, for sure. Shamefully, I’d taken my eye off Sheffield quartet, 65DAYSOFSTATIC, over the last few years. Sixty minutes later I was re-hooked and re-reeled (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 11th May). I don’t recall their progressive, instrumental post-rock being as utterly mesmerising, soulful or as huge as this – layering claustrophobic guitar hooks with all manner of manually operated, digi-pokery and thunderous rhythms, resulting in the kind of earfuck that defies category – so I’m assuming that they’ve got ridiculously better. And So I Watch You From Afar may have the aggression but 65dos have all the heart. The Great Escape is an industry shmoozefest that, each year, turns Brighton into a throbbing hub of modern sub-pop bohemia (various venues, 13-14th May). I ventured up to play a solo acoustic show for an Xtra Mile Recordings showcase. And let the record show that THE XCERTS are my favourite band on our label. The indie-rock trio may revel in emo affability but the sonic power that they unleash is astonishing. Welsh boys, STRAIGHT LINES, took Coheed & Cambria’s soprano melodies and turned them into disposable pop-punk niblets. Finnish duo, JAAKKO & JAY, played acoustic folkcore with half-mast trousers and revolutionary reference points. While Bristol’s FIGHTING FICTION made a fair fist of acoustic-led rock with a social conscience. Elsewhere, neat little bands were playing all over town as part of the Alternative Escape (ie. free shows for poor music fans). Taking Braid’s weaving guitars and throwing hardcore riffs at them is a great idea, and one that Chicago’s GROWNUPS have accomplished with ease. TALONS revelled in their messy hotchpotch of post-rock guitars and rutting fiddles. Garage trio, MEN, let jaunty bass lines run riot over rudimentary rock’n’roll. And Bristol sleazers, TURBOWOLF, turned synth-punk into a veritable sex act. But they were too clever for the metalcore minions who bounced off each other in macho abandon regardless of what the songs were doing. Stupid fucking kids. So, before Austin Lucas wiped the floor with everyone at K-Fest (Kingston, 15th May), Brighton garage-punks, SAUNA YOUTH, imbued the rough’n’ready ethos of The Shitty Limits with added synth noise; Northern rockers, MILLOY, played hard and manfully; newbies, PORCHES, sang drinking songs over shabby punk tuneage; Pompeys, YOU ME & THE ATOM BOMB, kept things simple and succulent; while CYNICS, aka Giles Bidder, proffered poignant songs with echoes of Billy Bragg. Good call. And before Austin Lucas wiped the floor with everyone at the Windmill (Brixton, 16th May) there was a celebration of old time music that contained pathos and bathos in equal measure. DANNY & THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD were on hand to show that, with four members down, their command of Dylan-esque folk squawk with late-‘60s vocal harmonies and Springsteen-style melodrama was still faultless. Meanwhile, suited’n’booted bluegrass/blues duo, THE HENRY BROTHERS, regaled us with traditional tales of love, betrayal and murder. The clear highlight being a thoroughly unpleasant ditty concerning a tragic school fire that climaxed with a description of the agonising cries of the children contained therein – at which point a young girl unwittingly ran across the front of the stage with comedic precision. You couldn’t make this stuff up.
