ILLUSTRATION by Jack Hudson and Adam Hancher

Jack and Adam are both in their third year of Illustration at UWE Bristol. They are both members of the Just Us collective (www. justusdesigncollective.com) and are currently collaborating together on projects as well as pursuing their own freelance work. They have just finished a music video for Leeds based band Tigers that Talked and are also producing work for a group show in Kassel (Germany) this month. They worked closely on this illustration – Adam painted the man and Jack painted the animals, both using gouache, whilst the background elements were a combination of both of their drawings and ideas. When they graduate next year, they both look forward to pushing their individual work further, experimenting with different types of moving image and live action. NEWS New Music Venue For Cardiff

THIS MONTH WE ARE... …cultivating our Mo. Otherwise known as a moustache, our face fuzz efforts are all in aid of Movember (the month formerly known as November) when everyone (both Mo Bros and Mo Sistas) raises funds and awareness of prostate cancer and men’s health issues. This is a global event, everyone’s encouraged to grow a Mo and get friends and family to donate to support your Mo-growing. Party with other Mo Bros and Sistas (generally fake mo’s are needed for the fairer sex but if its real, all the more impressive…?!) as you raise money at events across the country – Mo Bristol takes place at The Cooler in Bristol on 26 November. The end of Movember is marked with a series of Gala Partés, held to thank Mo Bros and Sistas for helping to raise awareness and funds for men’s health – See http:// uk.movember.com/ for more info. 6|

Cardiff Arts Institute opens its doors for the first time on 5 Nov, with the grand aim of changing the face of the Cardiff music scene. Situated on Park Place, the Institute is a collaboration between one of the country’s most critically acclaimed independent pub groups – 580 Ltd and a brand new Cardiff collective – Something Creatives, who have many years of experience in promoting events in London and around the country. The new venue will host an eclectic blend of live music, club nights, arts events and food. Designed by Welsh sisters and St Martin’s graduates Gabrielle and Becky Kelly, the team responsible for Milgi on City Rd, Cardiff Arts Institute intends to provide the Welsh capital with a new vision for what a social club can be; working with artists, promoters, musicians and other creatives to establish a space in which the culture and opportunities that Cardiff has can flourish. Something Creatives’ Matt the Hat told us, “We have always dreamed of opening a venue like this. We are cultural entrepreneurs at heart and all the projects we have been part of have been about the enhancement of people’s cultural lives. This project has been a long time coming and is a shared vision of an amazing collective of people who have great connections and a decade of experience across the festival and music industry.” More info at www.cardiffartsinstitute.org

Red Bull Street Style’s rules are easy as 3-2-1: three minutes, two players, and one ball form the battleground, in which control, creativity, and style are the elements – voted by a jury – that crown the winner. Players compete in one-on-one battles held on a special stage, seven meters in diameter, and need to alternate ball possession every 20 seconds while displaying their top tricks to the rhythm of music to impress the judges, beat their rival and move on to the next round. HIS COLOURFUL HISTORY HAS BEEN ALMOST AS WELL DOCUMENTED AS HIS MUSIC, FROM HITCHING TRAINS AS A FORMER SELFPROCLAIMED HOBO TO SELLING OUT LONDON’S ALBERT HALL AND BEING NOMINATED FOR A BRIT AWARD. HE’S A HEAVILY TATTOOED, TEA AND WHISKEY DRINKING, STRAIGHT TALKING, HARDWORKING REFLECTION OF HIS OWN LONG LIFE, DEFYING ALL THE ODDS TO MAKE IT TO THE TOP OF AN INDUSTRY SATURATED WITH YOUTH AND SHINE. SEASICK STEVE AND HIS GUITAR “THE THREE STRINGED TRANCE WONDER” ARE OFF ON A UK TOUR THIS MONTH, SO 247 CAUGHT UP WITH STEVE AND HIS DRUMMER, DAN MAGNUSSON, TO TALK FESTIVALS, SUCCESS AND FREEDOM. What’s the main difference between busking on the streets and playing festivals? You get paid different, I’ll tell you that for one thing. I guess it’s different in that people are sending you all kinds of attention so it’s pretty intense and a little bit nice, because when you are playing out on the streets, there ain’t no-one screaming at you except maybe the police. You’ve done it the hard way – playing for decades before you got a record deal. Do you have an opinion on programmes like X Factor and America’s Got Talent? Yeah, I have an opinion alright, I think it’s the worst thing ever for music, for most people who do it, it wrecks their lives. In England and America, these people might have a chance of a career, but I live over in Norway and they have the same shit and it leaves people all dressed up with nowhere to go. Even if you win, nothing really happens. Somebody is sprung into huge fame and it lasts about six months, then they’re back working as a waitress. In general, it’s just a money machine and I really hate it. Do you have any regrets about not making it big sooner? I have regrets, because I raised five children. They’re all grown up now and it would have been nice not to struggle so much. But if I had had the money back then, I might not have been a parent no more, I would have been laying in a ditch. Do you think you’ll ever write a song about living in a nice big house in Norway? I don’t live in a nice big house in Norway, I live in a one and half room apartment in a 50s building and I’m the youngest

person there. The lady underneath us has a nurse comes over six times a day, there is a lady opposite about 75 and she sits there and coughs all night long. We can get a nice place, but we didn’t... It’s too late in the day for that. Twenty years ago, the money would have made me an idiot, but I’m too old now. There ain’t anything I really want to do, I don’t have that burning desire for fancy cars or whatever. I just wanna play so I’ll make hay while the sun is shining. As a former producer, how do you handle other people messing around with your songs? Nobody messes with my tracks, I produce everything myself. I told the record company, “We do it my way, or the highway.” I don’t know anybody out there who knows my songs better than me. What are they going to tell me, put a drum machine under that or a little orchestra here? F*ck that. If I thought there was someone out there who could do what I do better, then yeah, they could come, but there ain’t nobody understand me better than me. I’m real happy to have this job, but I’m going to do 100% what I want, and if they don’t like it, they can fuck off and that’s for real. What’s the best thing about success? Being healthy. Success is a great medicine, not having to worry about how I’m going to pay the rent next month and it’s fun! There ain’t really no downsides to fame, just sometimes it’s a little hard to go places, but I understand that’s part of the deal. I always try to stop and sign pictures unless I have to get somewhere, although I don’t know why they want a picture of me! Do you sometimes wish people would focus less on the hobo story that has been built around your image and more on the music? Yeah, I mean, because that happened a long time ago. I’ve raised five children – my boy is 35 years old, and I had lots of normal jobs: whacking a hammer, doing plumbing, I sold shoes, I did anything man, so most of my adult life, I’ve had a lot of jobs. Job after job after job after job. But this is your best one so far? Hell yeah. Steve’s new album ‘Man From Another Time’ is out now on Atlantic Records. Catch Steve at Cardiff Millenium Centre on 12 Novevka Wishful Thinking, showcasing a selection of his songs from debut album ‘A Waste Of Time Well Spent’. www.seasicksteve.com To read a longer, more in depth version of this article, go to www.247magazine.co.uk

Words: Cherie Gordon

Ash have had their ups and downs over the years but after taking the bold step of only recording and releasing singles, the threesome have managed to reclaim that alternative sound that fans know and love. In honour of the band’s A – Z tour of the country, Cherie Gordon talks to Ash drummer Rick McMurray about life in one of Ireland’s top musical exports.

A

Albums. Why have you stopped selling music in the more tradition way with albums? The music business has changed so much over the last few years so we felt it was an opportunity to experiment and do new things. We thrive as a singles band. People are buying more singles tracks as downloads now too so it’s a good time to do this. We’re nervous but pretty excited.

B

The Band. You have been together since the early 1990s, what do you think are the key elements that have kept the band together? We like to branch out and experiment as a band. After we did our first album we thought ‘right, what can we do next?’ Musically we have felt a lot freer with the new singles that are coming out. We’re all good friends and grew up together and lived our lives together and so I think friendship has a lot to do with it.

C

Candy. A top song from Ash album Free All Angels and also a yummy sweet. What is your favourite candy? When I was growing up it was a Wispa, and they’ve made Wispa Gold now so I would have to say that. If I try and quit smoking I tend to eat a lot more chocolate. When we’re on tour there’s always loads of chocolate as well.

D

Discography. What is your favourite album? We have a soft spot for 1977 but I was listening to Free All Angels with Owen Morris who is now my neighbour, over a couple of ciders. We had the best time recording that album and it really stands out because it put us back on the map. Some people were ready to write us off so we knew it was make or break and we had an absolute blast recording it.

E

EPs. How does it feel to be releasing EPs three years after the release of your last album Twilight of the Innocents? We’ve got an EP out at the moment, True Love 1980, which is doing quite well in the dance charts which is surprising, we never expected to have a dance hit.

12 |

magazine

F

Fun. When you’re on the road what do you do to keep yourself amused? How do I say this without sounding like an alcoholic? I can’t! But I am trying to get a bit healthier and do more exercise and go running. I’ve got to keep fit just so I can drink more.

G

Genre. Ash has been described as pop punk, Britpop and alternative over the years. How would you describe the band? Alternative is probably the best way to describe us. I remember in the early days when 1977 came out and we were being written about in Kerrang!, NME and Smash Hits – all the musical gametes. I think we’re pretty lucky that we can’t be styled as one thing or another. That leaves us free to do whatever we like.

H

Home. Do you miss your home when you’re on tour? I just left my house in Edinburgh and that was tough. My cats were trying to get in my bag as I was leaving. You start to get homesick after around week six of a tour but it’s weird when we do get into the last week of a tour and we really just want to play. We just do not want to get off stage.

I

Internet. You are releasing 26 singles, one each fortnight over the next 12 months. What can fans expect and will there be any surprises? Some of the music is completely different. We’re breaking out some new great synth-driven music and being compared to New Order. There will be a lot of surprises but more traditional Ash stuff and more guitar driven music.

J

Jobs. If you weren’t in Ash what job do you think you would have? I would be a wine taster. I would just go into my local pub and taste wine all day although it probably wouldn’t pay well. I dread to think what my life would be like if I wasn’t in the band. We started this when we were in school so other jobs are something we have never had to think about.

K

Knuckles. Have you ever had a bit of fisty cuffs in the band? We’ve never come to blows but every once in a while Tim will bring up the fact that the Police used to get into fights when they were doing interviews and says we should do that but we would only do it for a laugh.

L

Limelight. How do you cope in the limelight? It is probably easier for me and Mark. As the front man Tim is the focal point of the band. One of our regular gig venues growing up in Belfast was called the Limelight and we spent a lot of time there.

M

Music. What other types of music do you listen to and what inspires you? I listen to anything. Today I’ve listened to Metallica, Faith No More and some jazz. Probably our biggest influence as a band is Nirvana. They showed what you could do with a couple of cords and some passion.

N

No limits. What is next for Ash? The tour is only the start. We will launch the singles campaign and after that we are busy for the next year and hopefully we’ll play at some festivals. It is exciting to get back into the thick of it. We’ve been playing the smaller festivals this summer so we will maybe get on the bill for the bigger ones next year. Our ultimate dream would be to headline Reading.

O

On the road. What is the best part of being on tour? Getting on stage playing with my mates. We’ve got a very close crew who we’ve been working with for years. Our lighting guy did his first gig with us in 1995 and my younger brother is working as a drum tech. He did his first gig with the band and he seems to be coping well. There is a big age gap with us – he was six years old the first time he came to see Ash.

P

Pets. Do you have any? I’ve got two cats, Chloe and Radcliffe, named after the characters in the League of Gentlemen. Charlotte (Hatherley, former band member) used to go on about getting a pet monkey and bringing it on the road but she was a bit crazy. Although it would be pretty fun having a monkey.

Q

Queue. When was the last time you queued for anything? Last night at the bar when I bought a bottle of wine, followed by another bottle of wine. I did queue to see The Cure last year and they were absolutely brilliant.

R

Reaction. Do you get nervous about the reaction your music will get when it is released? We do get nervous and it is almost a relief when we do get the new release out there. We get quite tense. I try to be as relaxed as possible but Mark gets very stressed – he probably hasn’t slept for a week.

S

Sound. How do you think your sound has evolved over the years? It has changed quite a bit. If you listen to our first single or music from 1977 it is quite radically different. In the early days we were quite shambolic and now we are a well-oiled machine.

T

Tour. Were did you come up with the idea for the tour? We did something similar to this before Free All Angels and we’ve got some really great memories of that. It was a bit of a chore for our booking agent to find all the towns alphabetically and we ended up with Exmouth for X - we dropped the E.

U

U-Turn. What would you do differently if you had the chance? Maybe things would be different if we skipped Nu-Clear Sounds and went to Free All Angels but hardcore fans love that album. That was a hard time for the band. We were burnt out with our world tour and the recording company was crying out for a follow up. That was a stressful time. I am still proud of that album though.

V

Venue. Where is the most random place you have performed? Without a shadow of a doubt in Ullapool, Scotland. It was the tour before Free All Angels, where fans put up a list of venues on the website and voted where they wanted us to play. This place had more votes than it did people in the venue! We went up there and played to 50 people in this strange little pub. No one left after the gig, they just stood around the bar drinking whiskey and fighting with the bouncers. I’ve never seen a more drunk crowd.

W

Writing. How do you write your songs? We write separately but get together in the studio to learn each other’s ideas and see what fits well. We’ve been doing it for so long now we know what works. In our last session we went through eight songs and started recording them which is pretty good.

X

X-treme. What is the craziest thing you have ever done? I don’t know. I don’t do that many extreme things. Mark is always the daredevil. He will get drunk and start climbing on things and breaking himself. It came to a head literally when he fell off the trailer on our tour bus. He was trying to jump from the trailer onto the roof of the venue and walked back to take a run up, fell off the trailer and smashed his head.

Y

You. Describe yourself in three words or less. Paralytic.

Z

Zennor. The tour ends at Zennor on the tip of Cornwall. Are you looking forward to playing in the tiny village? I’m really looking forward to that. I think it’s going to be great. The capacity of the hall is 60 to 70. The lighting guy lives about 30 miles up the road so he will get his family down and we will have an end of tour party in the village pub.

The A - Z Tour is on the road in November. Catch Ash at TJ’s in Newport on 6 Nov, Sin City in Swansea on 12 Nov, and Orange Box, Yeovil on 22 Nov www.ash-official.com magazine | 13

Musician Pete Lawrie grew up and lives in Penarth, Wales and has been a regular on the Cardiff gig circuit for a while. His music is a bit bluesy, a bit blue eyed soul. Throw hip hop influences and a folky, rootsy feel into the mix and you’re pretty much there – but more Johnny Cash than Nick Drake. He’s collaborated with Mercury Music winner Speech Debelle, and he recently started a residency at the Buffalo Bar in Cardiff – Pete Lawrie and Friends – where a special guest will be invited to play each show. The line up so far has included Turin Brakes, and Fyfe Dangerfield from the Guillemots. With guests jamming on stage with Pete then collaborating on a track that is available to download post event, this is raw, acoustic, live talent in an exciting showcase project. We chatted to Pete about his childhood, cassettes and loving Paul Simon… What was your childhood like, growing up in Wales? My first memory is of my seventh birthday – opening a Scalextric with the kind of hurried, wrapping paper destroying enthusiasm only Scalextric can bring. It had a loop the loop and it lasted about three minutes. My teen years were spent in a large cloud of nameless smoke. Skateboarding. Rage Against The Machine. Nofx. Shouting at mum. Being generally awful to everyone and juggling all of this with school... and trumpet lessons. Summers were spent in convoys to Llangenith – a truly beautiful part of the coastline. All VW campers, first love in tents and weekends drunk in a sand dune.

Simon. Has he replied yet? What are you going to do if he writes back? The first thing I will do is jump around my bedroom as if I have stubbed all of my toes at once. I will then play the Paul Simon back catalogue until my friends call social services. I would love him to just hear one of my songs. You recorded a single with Mercury Music winner Speech Debelle. How did this come about? I have always listened to a lot of hip hop and was a big fan of UK stuff in my early twenties; Jehst, Roots Manuva, Ty… so I was very excited to work with Speech and very happy for her when she won the Mercury Prize. Mainly because it is potentially the return of jazz samples in hip hop – something I have missed for a long time. I think it will exist as a free download for the time being (google it). Enjoy! Tell us more about your residency at the Buffalo Bar. We wanted to put on acts that we have or want to collaborate with, and that hadn’t necessarily come to this part of the world before, or for a long time. We are really excited to be playing alongside artists that we love.

Which musicians would you most like to see perform at your night? If I could bring back the dead and had a limitless Bill Gates budget… Robert Johnson, Nina Simone, Otis Redding We love ‘Graceland’ too – we remember listening to it on tape and acoustic Marley. In real life, I would love to in the car (and the Mamas and the Papas, Steeleye Span, get Alberta Cross, Fionn Fleetwood Mac…). Do you still have a cassette collection? Regan, Stephen Fretwell, You have amazing taste 247, save maybe Fleetwood Mac Cate Le Bon, Florence, (sorry). Unfortunately I do not have many collections of The Wild Beasts and anything left. I keep my house key around my neck, such is Paul Simon... all at once, my talent for losing everything. Cassettes are a very romantic sharing a ukulele. memory for me. Pioneering drum and bass brand Infidelity broke the mould when they started putting on nights at Bristol Academy. Seven years later, Infidelity is still going strong, and with plans for a massive birthday party in the pipeline after a short break from the scene, 247 caught up with the man behind the night, UK Rocka (aka Ricky Ashman) to find out the secret of his success… What were your reasons behind starting Infidelity? I had a couple of years of promoting experience under my belt when I started Infidelity in 2002. The events were an instant success so I looked into working with bigger venues – and came across the Bristol Academy. The club wasn’t too keen on hosting a drum and bass event as they were very much a house music and live venue. However, the event sold out and they had to turn people away at the door – since then they’ve never looked back! That was really the opening for drum and bass at the Bristol Academy. When I launched Infidelity, it was a big challenge trying to fill a 1900 capacity venue with a new brand. It was heavily promoted, you couldn’t move without seeing an Infidelity poster, so the hype created was unbelievable. Because the Academy had a bigger capacity than anywhere else, I was able to put on a mind blowing line up that changed the course of line ups in Bristol from that point. It was a complete sell out, couldn’t have asked for anything more. How did you learn how to put on nights? I just jumped in headfirst. I made a couple of small mistakes – for example, the first flyer I produced was a replica £50 note, and people were using them to play practical jokes. I got in a bit of trouble from the Bank of England for that. When you’re a promoter you need to have passion for what you are doing because you pretty much eat, sleep and breath it – it’s the only way! What has been the best night you’ve put on so far? The first Infidelity will always have a special place in my memory but over the years I’ve put on artists like The Sugar Hill Gang, DJ Craze, Cash Money, Sway, Skream, Benga, Rahzel and almost every drum and bass artist you can think of. One of the most memorable moments “MY FIRST FLYER WAS was when I had Guru from Gangstarr turn up A REPLICA £50 NOTE… as a surprise guest! PEOPLE WERE USING THEM TO PLAY PRACTICAL It’s always nice to give back to the JOKES… I GOT IN TROUBLE something ravers and that was a WITH THE BANK OF big treat for the third ENGLAND FOR THAT…” birthday event. 16 |

How has Infidelity developed as a brand over the past seven years? Infidelity has always been there to showcase drum and bass. I also run UK hip hop events under the Hi-Fidelity brand and started programming events so the main room would start with UK hip hop, then change to drum and bass around midnight. Recently I’ve brought dubstep into the mix too. It’s important to see your own events from a ravers point of view. If you aren’t connected with your crowd, you will lose touch altogether. How has the scene changed in the past seven years? The scene has changed a lot. I try to put something on the line up for everyone. Liquid drum and bass has stamped its place firmly within the scene, but the one big thing at the moment that has crept into the drum and bass scene is dubstep. I’m a big fan and really enjoy it. It’s an exciting sound that has a lot of similarities to drum and bass. Good to DJ and good to rave to! What do you have planned for your seventh birthday celebrations? I’ve worked on a line up which showcases the original big dogs alongside some new masters of production. I have a few alternative sets going on with Fearless spitting over dubstep with myself DJing. IC3 will be DJing a dirty house set as well. We’ve also got some UK hip hop with a performance from Hi-Fidelity favourite Jehst, as well as five times UK DMC Champion Asian Hawk. The main room will be straight drum and bass and room two is dubstep. There is mash up in room three with reggae, UK gara ge, turntablism, UK hip hop, big beat, dirty house and liquid drum and bass. What are your plans for the future of Infidelity? I have been looking into some new ventures for 2010, got some good plans in the mix but all will be revealed soon. For now, stay posted to the facebook group ‘In fidelity Drum and Bass’ for breaking news on events.

Saving Aimee

Man alive, there’s some saccharine shit out there these days. Saving Aimee tender an updated, turgid version of ‘80s fodder like The Buggles: treated rock guitars, lots of play-school synth hooks and horribly affected singing that makes you want to hunt down the culprit and piss on his tonsils. SA may take great pride in the p-operatic harmonies of ‘High 5s’ but when they have nothing else to offer but over-produced superciliousness, who gives a flying furball? Backbone

Brainworms II: Swear To Me (Rorschach)

It’s refreshing to learn that members of Municipal Waste and Landmines, amongst other notables, are central to Brainworms: a Virginian post-punk ensemble who revel in revisiting the complex earnestness of Braid and the scuttle-funk of Minutemen. With overdrive pedals set to 0.5, the likes of ‘Whatever, That’s How You Get Famous’ celebrate the salad days of late ‘80s US hardcore when innovation was the greatest accolade. We need more of it. Backbone

Buckcherry

15 / Black Butterfly (Eleven Seven)

I can’t imagine that anyone takes Buckcherry seriously even when they’re taking themselves seriously (to wit: a brace of songs on the new album, ‘Black Butterfly’, that deal with child abuse – read about, not necessarily experienced). The other album, ‘15’ – nothing but a safe succession of Guns ‘N’ Roses jams – was released a few years ago. Throw in an exclusive, superfluous Bonus Disc and you’re armed with enough Buck material to hang yourself with. Be my guest. Backbone

Mumford & Sons Sigh No More

(Universal Island) Many have embraced the nu-prairie sounds but few British acts have managed to pen the songs that matter. Enter London indie-folks, Mumford & Sons: a band of wide-eyed minstrels who utilize banjos, dobros, dreadnoughts, brass and strings to augment their brilliant soul-grass sojourns. ‘Little Lion Man’ typifies the band’s heartrending yet heartwarming nature, located somewhere at the Arcade Fire/Deliverance interface; while the lush harmonies of ‘Timshel’ owes a debt to the ‘60s majesty of CSN. Devastatingly good. Backbone

DEMOS DEMO OF THE MONTH We mentioned Cornish indie-boho trio, JOSIE & THE LOVECATS, a couple issues ago. Having since received their debut demo EP, ‘Spider’, they deserve a full review. Well, it’s still evident that the now-defunct Rosie & The Goldbug have left their mark along the coves and B roads of Kernow but, then again, any female singer in awe of Kate Bush will inevitably end up sounding a little wayward. This is a very good thing. Where Josie & The Lovecats differ is that they keep themselves rooted to a more organic tradition, especially with the cello, which, on the likes of ‘Forward Facing’ takes up as much foreground space as the sensitive piano; while ‘Phenomenal’ betrays a fondness for the sultry coo of PJ Harvey. Imaginative and intelligent.www.josieandthelovecats.com

With Denada’s Darren Miles at the helm, Plymouth’s THE WATERBOARDERS dedicate themselves to reminding people of how good ‘50s/’60s instrumental surf rock’n’roll was by doing a bunch of cover versions of songs that you’ll know when you hear them (Dick Dale’s ‘Misirlou’, The Chantays’ ‘Pipeline’, Pixies’ ‘Cecilia Ann’) alongside others that you probably wouldn’t recognize so eagerly (The Swiv-O-Matics’ ‘She Walks On Bars’). The musicianship is gloriously rudimentary and the recording defiantly lo-fi – which is, of course, a bonus with this kind of garage groove – with echoes of The Cramps at their gnarliest (minus the sleazoid vocals). All told, a loving and loyal rendition of an era that time forgot. www.thewaterboarders.net

Meanwhile, over on Murdoch-Space…

Bath’s WITH LOVE FROM HUMANS boast of their intentions to produce an Xbox Arcade game and ‘attention-grabbing merchandising ideas’. It smacks of industry gimmickry but their single, ‘Bottle it Up’, is a harmless, wistful acoustic-avec-trumpet ditty with echoes of The Kooks; while other songs from their EP amble along in an inoffensive, slightly melancholic way. www.myspace.com/withlovefromhumans

Featuring (ex?-) members of Blindfold Garden, you would expect South Cornwall’s FIRE IN CAIRO to have something special going on. And they do. Rounded out by ex-Baby Astrolab vocalist, Ben Harris, the band evoke, at times, haunting soundscapes that flit between the acoustic wistfulness of, say, Fields and the angsty guitar therapy of Placebo. Perhaps their greatest strength is the ability to build songs from innocuous beginnings to towering, paranoiac monsters without sounding contrived – reminiscent of the developed presence of mind of their former incarnations. Although demo opener, ‘Initial’, is a riot of introspection from the outset. An auspicious start. www.myspace. com/fireincairo2008

CROWLEY’S TEARS is one Ramon Welsh, a Plymouth-residing solo muso who clearly lamented the passing of the ‘80s to the point where he’s written 30 songs of Thomas Dolby-meets-Talk Talk electro-pop like some kind of one-man revival machine. I’m old enough to remember the ‘80s and they were hideous but, strangely, I like this a lot. Time heals everything. www.myspace. com/crowleystears

Straight outta Glasgae with their balls on fire come TRAGIC CITY THIEVES – one of those bands who don’t mind acting faintly ridiculous in their quest to put Glam back on the Rock agenda. You get the impression that singer, CJ Monk, probably points his finger into the crowd a lot when singing crypto-emo couplets like “How many boys have had their lady taken by a lady machine?” (‘Lady Machine’). TCT are more convincing when they drop the sexist folly and crack out the solos (‘Beverly’) or the chunky, sleazy riffage (‘Metalboard’) – songs that make Viking Skull sound deadpan. It’s clear that they’ll never get far beyond their hometown (other than as a bit of a joke band) but there’s no reason why they can’t have fun in the process. www.myspace. com/tragiccitythieves

Exeter rockers, DISSONANCE, aren’t half as bad as I thought they were going to be from that name, although the occasional attempts to lay falsetto over Maiden-like riffola are ill-advised, to say the least. The vocal harmonies and guitar hooks are pretty chipper though so we’ll forgive them their shortcomings. www.myspace.com/ dissonanceuk

York quintet, DEATH DEFYING LIFE, come bounding out of the traps armed with the same kind of melodic hardcore that sells out stadiums these days. Caught somewhere in the crossfire between A Wilhelm Scream and Rise Against, the band never let the urgency drop, which is kind of good and bad at the same time. Good for pubescent punks who zoom through life at one pace, bad for old punks like me who want more shade to balance up the periods of light. The thing is, there are so many bands ploughing this particular furrow, most of which are technically proficient, that you begin to yearn for something special, with more depth and meaning. Or maybe I’m too cynical to be reviewing young hardcore bands. www.myspace.com/deathdefyinglife

Exeter trio, ANDERSON, take their ‘alt rock’ careers seriously. They recorded their debut offering, ‘Take A Bow’, in Italy and are touring there in October. They take great pride in gear sponsorship deals. They’ve made their Myspace look like a corporate prospectus. Unsurprisingly, then, the music is as safe as sofa cushions, as bland as sand, and has nothing alternative about it whatsoever. www. myspace.com/andersonband

And finally, the best of this month’s bunch, Wadebridge quartet, ELLIPSIS – whose six song debut EP is a work of sonic wonder, caught somewhere in the ethereal weave between Death Cab and Circa Survive, even if they only tease you with samples on their Myspace page. www.myspace.com/ellipsiscornwall

The 39 Steps (U)

1 Nov: The Arnolfini,

Bristol, 0117 9172300 www.arnolfini.org.uk. Dir. Alfred Hitchcock, starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. 1935/UK/86 mins Adventurer Richard Hannay finds himself in the middle of an international espionage plot masterminded by a sinister organisation. It culminates with him being chased across a Scottish moor, handcuffed to a beautiful woman. This is a classic adventure, based on the John Buchan novel, that is underpinned by witty, daring and exuberant direction from The Master of Suspense – Alfred Hitchcock. Coco Before Chanel (12a)

25 Nov: The Welfare,

Swansea, 01639 843163 www.thewelfare.co.uk Dir: Anne Fontaine, starring Audrey Tautou, Alessandro Nivola, and Emmanuelle Devos 2009/France/110mins Audrey Tautou (Amelie) is perfectly cast in this enthralling portrait of the legendary designer’s early life. The untold story of the young Gabrielle Chanel, born in 1883 the illegitimate daughter of a travelling salesman, who learned to sew in an orphanage – is brought to the screen with a delicately honed script and beautifully captured period style. Singing in a cabaret club where she earned the nickname Coco, Chanel entranced several high society men who aided the development of her remarkable career. In the pre-war years she rebelled against the oppressive conventions of her era and sought freedom and elegant simplicity in her designs for other women.

Dorian Gray (15) 16 Nov: The Riverfront, Newport, 01633 656 757 www.newport.gov.uk Dir. Oliver Parker, starring Ben Barnes, Colin Firth, Ben Chaplin and Caroline Goodall 2009/UK/112 mins When naïve young Dorian Gray (Barnes) arrives in Victorian London he is swept into a social whirlwind by the charismatic Lord Henry Wooton (Firth) who introduces him to the hedonistic pleasures of the city. Henry’s friend, society artist Basil Hallward (Chaplin) paints a portrait of Dorian to capture the full power of his youthful beauty and when it is unveiled Dorian makes a flippant pledge; that he would give anything to stay as he is in the picture – even his soul. This eagerly awaited latest adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s novel does not disappoint, with a stellar British cast and fine acting from

Barnes in particular as the young man losing himself in hedonistic pleasures of the time. An Education (12a)

1 – 5 Nov: The Watershed,

Bristol, 0117 927 5100 www.watershed.co.uk Dir: Lone Scherfig, starring Peter Sarsgaard, Carey Mulligan, and Alfred Molina. 2009/UK/95 mins An endearing coming-of-age story adapted by Nick Hornby from Lynn Barber’s memoir. It’s 1961 and London schoolgirl Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is stifled by the boredom of her adolescent routine; she can’t wait to enter Oxford University to begin adult life and liberate herself from her conservative father. Her mundane suburban existence is capsized by the arrival of a much older suitor, David (Peter Sarsgaard), who introduces Jenny to his sophisticated life of hip, smoky jazz clubs, art auctions and Paris. Her studies soon start to suffer as her traditional education is replaced by David’s own, more dangerous version. As she is tempted by another kind of life, will David be the making of Jenny or her undoing? Encounters Short Film Festival

17 – 21 Nov: Various

locations around Bristol www.encounters-festival. org.uk This internationally recognised short film festival is celebrating it’s 15th year showcasing new talent in filmmaking and providing a platform for emerging filmmakers to screen their work. of prizes. The films and animations are a selection of the best new drames, comedies, music videos, documentaries and animation from 58 different countries. Plenty of variety and a good opportunity to see some of the upcoming filmmaking talent.

and play as they wish. One day the road opens and so begins the family’s nightmare as the noise and pollution forces them to retreat into their home. Each member of the family reacts differently - teenage daughter Marion becomes obsessed with the toxins, young Julien doesn’t care while their parents become increasingly more aggravated by the situation. This is an interesting mix of coming of age drama and eco-nightmare that is well worth a watch.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (PG)

2 Nov: The Watershed,

Bristol, 0117 927 5100 www.watershed.co.uk Dir: Wes Anderson, starring Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, and Jason Schwartzman. 2009/US/93 mins Director Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic) worked closely with the estate of Roald Dahl on this animated adaptation of the much loved book, going so far as to pen the screenplay in the author’s very own writing shed in which he wrote his famous stories. The result is a rousing adventure following Mr. Fox and his quirky band of animal friends as they try to outwit the human farmers on their tails – a magnificent fusion of the two men’s creative minds which will delight audiences both young and old. Anderson regulars Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman join a star-studded cast which features George Clooney and Meryl Streep as Mr. and Mrs. Fox.

In The Loop (15)

21 Nov: Bridgewater Arts

Centre, 01278 422700 www. bridgwaterartscentre.co.uk Dir. Armando Iannucci, starring Peter Capaldi, James Gandolfini, and Tom Hollander. 2008/UK/ 105 mins The US President and UK Prime Minister suddenly fancy a war. But it’ll be quick this time. The US General Miller (Gandolfini) doesn’t think so and the British Secretary of State for International Development, Simon Foster (Hollander), agrees with him. But, after Simon accidentally backs military action on television, he suddenly has a lot of friends in Washington, DC. If Simon can get in with the right DC people, if his entourage of one (Chris Addison) can sleep with the right intern and if they can both stop the PM’s chief strategist Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi) rigging the vote at the UN, they can halt the war. From Armando Iannucci, the comic-genius behind The Thick Of It comes this biting satire on BritishUS relations and the lunacy of war. Dark, very funny, and potty-mouthed – and directed at relentless pace.

Hot New Releases:

Bristol, 0117 9172300 www.arnolfini.org.uk Dir. Karel Reisz, starring Albert Finney and Shirley Anne Field 1960/UK/89 mins Alan Sillitoe wrote the screenplay for this sharp adaptation of his classic novel about a Nottingham factory worker who refuses to conform (Albert Finney, in his first major screen performance). Catching the full atmosphere of a 1950s Midland industrial town, the film is produced, directed and acted with integrity and insight.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON (TBC)

Dir: Chris Weitz, starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Melissa Rosenberg. 2009/US/100 mins Twilight saw vampire Edward fall for human teen Bella - and vice versa. But the course of true love never does run smoothly, so the sequel sees Edward leaving Bella, for her own protection. She goes a bit doo-lally and starts engaging in death-defying activities in order to feel connected to him again. On the bright side, however, she does become closer friends with Jacob, a young Quileute Indian who clearly has a crush on her but also has some secrets. This sequel will have teenage hearts swooning and the male members of the audience throwing up.
