The Twitcher by Tom Plant “This painting depicts the 19th century military engineer Major Ludlow. After retiring from the British army in 1895 he discovered a passion for bird watching and especially for observing the natural behavior of robins. To this end he developed the worlds first fully mobile bird hide. Unfortunately the mechanism was extremely loud and tended to scare the away any birds within a quarter of a mile. The contraption was disassembled for scrap an all that remains are the design sketches on which this painting is based,” says Bristol-based illustrator Tom Plant. We reckon’ they should install one of these beauties at Glastonbury this year! Plymouth bids for City of Culture status The city of Plymouth has bid to win City of Culture status and this decision is proving popular online. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is asking people to cast their vote by heading to their Facebook page and ‘liking’ one of eleven pictures representing the cities who are all competing for this status. Plymouth’s picture shows fireworks exploding over The Hoe and is way ahead of the competition at the moment – show your support for the South West by flicking a like in its direction at http://www.facebook.com/dcmsgovukyou will see, these pictures were taken both in the water and from the beach and I am always greeted with smiles and plenty of laughter."

Bristol artists crowdfunding bid for street art café and creative business space A group of Bristol creatives have launched an innovative campaign to build a community street art café and creative business space in the heart of the city by sharing the cost online. The building will provide a space for local artists to exhibit their work, breathing new life into the declining Old Market quarter of Bristol. The new HQ will allow arts collective Weapon of Choice to host a series of exciting shows by edgy Bristol artists and international graffiti stars alike. Weapon of Choice are aiming to raise £20,000 to build the gallery and business space in an abandoned shop through crowdfunding website Spacehive.com. Since going live last month, the project has already received support from 40 local people who have made pledges ranging from just £2.50 to £250. The first planned event will be a graffiti jam, featuring local writers and special guests from across the UK, since Banksy's famous 'Walls On Fire' event in 1998. Beginning as a monthly live graffiti and hip-hop night, Weapon of Choice graduated in 2009 to hosting exhibitions of up-and-coming street artists, alongside better-known artists like the French body painter Mr Shiz. In keeping with Bristol’s famous ‘underground’ scene, Weapon of Choice aim to take the concept of street art to the masses, transforming run down buildings into works of art using Bristol's most sought after street artists. The project follows a rich tradition of triumphant Bristol street art schemes, and the team have pledged to house several youth and creative workshops incorporating not just graffiti but also music production, publishing and business practice. They hope to create a future crop of creative professionals in Bristol. Anyone who pledges money on Spacehive.com only gets charged when projects hit their funding target. Weapon of Choice need a further £19,500 in donations for the project to succeed. For more information on the project, see https://spacehive.com/weaponofchoicehq.

April 7th marks the Tanya’s Courage Trust’s Purple Day. The charity was set up by Nikki Empel-Newman when her sister, Tanya, lost her life to cancer aged 17. The charity supports 16-25 year olds in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly fighting Cancer, with emotional, financial and social support. Purple Day will honor Tanya’s memory and the charity aim to have everyone in Cornwall wearing purple on or around the 7th April every year. “If everyone in Cornwall paid just £1 to the charity to wear purple on this day every year, not only would it raise vital funds for the charity, it would also raise awareness of who we are and what we do,” said Nikki. See www.tanyascourage.org. uk for more information on the inspirational charity. A Purple Day promotional shot by Andrea Pennington www.andreapenningtonphotographer.co.uk
Theatre Royal Regeneration We £5 million Arts Council England funding confirmed, plus a £2 million contribution from the venue itself, Plymouth’s Theatre Royal closes for redevelopment from April 10 until September. When the venue reopens, it’ll launch the UK tour of the National Theatre’s production of War Horse. The redevelopment will see the re-cladding of the building, an extension to the front, a new Box Office, shop and cafe area, an outdoor terrace area and an extended restaurant. There will also be a new studio space within the theatre basement, which will provide a city centre location for work with young people and community groups. During the summer, the Drum Studio theatre is relocating to TR2 in Cattedown, where there will be a number of shows going on there. See www.theatreroyal.com.
Le Bistrot Pierre comes to Plymouth Leading French restaurant, Le Bistrot Pierre opens in Plymouth’s Royal William Yard this month. It’ll be located in the historic New Cooperage building and will offer authentic provencal style menus full of true flavour and honest ingredients at affordable prices to the South West. “Whilst some of our food, such as the nutty flavoured St. Marcellin cheese from Isere and the traditional escargot from Burgundy, will be imported, we’re planning to source our seafood from local suppliers wherever possible. Currently our oysters come from the River Yealm close to Plymouth; our mussels from the River Exe and our cock crabs are caught off the outskirts of Berry Head near Brixham,” said John Whitehead, Co-founder of the company. The well-respected family of restaurants has branches across the UK, so it’s about time we got one in the South West. www.247magazine.co.uk

Rudimental The English drum and bass quartet have taken the world by storm. Their debut album, Home, is out this month, you can’t escape them on the radio and there are going to be big on the 2013 festival circuit too. We had a chat with Rudimental’s Piers Aggett, fresh back from touring in Australia. Where did you guys meet and how did you come up with your name? We all grew up together in Hackney, London in the same neighbourhood. What made you want to produce as a group, rather than as individuals? We are all about creating songs from us all jamming and vibing out in the studio. We all bring something to the table and meticulously cancel out each others weaknesses. Like Feel The Love process started with Kesi on a lyrical level, then to me (Piers) on a melody and song level then to Amir on a production/mix level and then to Leon for the debut test in a DJ set in a club!

Would you say your eclectic sound has been made possible by the fact you’re a group? It all stems from our eclectic backgrounds and our neighbourhood. This month is massive for you, with your single ‘Waiting All Night’ and your debut album Home both being released – how has the build up been? It's been mad - the support has been killer too! We've been on tour in Australia and USA for a month, so we are a bit away with it! All good though.
www.247magazine.co.uk
‘Waiting All Night’ was Zane Lowe’s ‘Hottest Record’ on Radio 1 and Zara Cox’s Big Thing – a big deal as you were largely underground then - do you feel supported by the music industry generally? Yeah for sure. We take a lot of pride in what our friends in the industry think... From Disclosure to The Prodigy to Skream to Dizzie and Ian Brown, we've got a lot of love and it means the world to us. Tell us about the process of putting together your first album? Being real, it's been a roller coaster ride, but we've got it done! We feel proud to have documented our world using some crazy talented features – both upcoming and established. ‘Feel The Love’ and ‘Not Giving In’ were both smash hits – how have your lives changed since having a number 1 hit? We basically work doing what we love which we all are so humbled for.
“From Disclosure to The Prodigy to Skream to Dizzie and Ian Brown, we've got a lot of love and it means the world to us”
‘Feel The Love’ was nominated for ‘Best British Single’ at this year’s BRIT Awards – how did that feel? It was great. We didn't win but it’s given us even more drive to succeed and work hard. Was a joy to be there too. Who has been the most inspirational person you’ve worked with to date? Probably Emeli Sande. She is just magic. Listen to the album and you'll hear why. Tell us about supporting Plan B on his sold out UK tour? That was something else. Ben was a joy to work and travel with – we learned a lot! How significant are live shows for you guys – is this something you’d like to be known for or are you happier in the studio? Live means a lot to us. Glasto just got confirmed, which is a huge result for us! Where can we see you live this summer, Glastonbury and…? Bestival, V Festival, Latitude and there’ll be lots of others too. Any tips for aspiring producers reading this? Follow your heart and be patient! See Rudimental live at Love Saves the Day in Bristol on Saturday 25th May, tickets and info from www.lovesavestheday.org

ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN THE NEXT HALF HOUR…
Despite celebrating their tenth anniversary this year, the rise of Enter Shikari has always been a gunpowder trail – speeding exponentially and with the very real threat of an explosion. Stalwarts of the mainstream music press, yet still maintaining a fiercely underground ethic, the band have built up a staunchly dedicated following – and one about to be rewarded with a broom-cupboard tour of the more neglected venues around the country. We sat down with lead singer Rou, ahead of their gigs in Plymouth and Falmouth this month.

“The quicker art wins the battle of proving all segregation and division artificial and for the immoral benefit of a few the better” Impending tenth anniversary celebrations, a sold-out tour at the end of last year, third album just missing out on #1 – 2012 was a hell of a year. Was it as fun to be a part of as it was to watch? Yeah, really can't complain with the last year at all. Just about to complete it all with another European Summer festival run as well which is by far the best part of the touring circuit. Incredibly thankful to everyone for their support in keeping the travelling menagerie that is Enter Shikari alive. Your UK tour is pushing to the really tiny venues around the country. What prompted such a regional tour? It's a good 4/5 years since we did a tour of scaled down venues (to this degree anyway!) and seen as that was how we learnt and crafted our trade as a band it feels fitting to relive those early days every now and then. I think also people who don't live in big cities appreciate us making the effort in reaching out to them, as it is usually the other way around. The sweat, the connection, the transcendence (without wanting to sound too religious!) of it all is just beautiful and addictive. One of the major things that is lacking is a political message in British music – something which you seem to have addressed on the new album. It would be nice to have other artists by our side in this fight but it is not the lack of that that drives me. I have enough incentive from the needless oppression and pain caused in society to write socially aware music. Growing up in a punk scene, I saw that the music was far better delivered and far more sincere when truly angry and truly thoughtful, so the lyrical content simply has to be subjects I am passionate about. The recurring theme throughout your catalogue is that of trying to stop segregation –be it society, musical genres or your crowds. Very much so. The divide and conquer tactic is still employed almost everywhere we look throughout society, so I think it is an important responsibility of music, as an inherently communal experience, to fortify unity and bring us together whenever possible. The quicker art wins the battle of proving all segregation and division artificial and for the immoral benefit of a few the better. The guitarist from your previous tour-mates For Today made some rather sweeping and homophobic statements recently. You’ve been very outspoken on this topic to the contrary. Definitely. I'm not sure if he expected any comeback from what he said, but being a man whose voice is listened to by a lot of credulous Americans, he shouldn't be left unscathed when spouting such morally bankrupt bullshit. There is no space or patience in the
www.247magazine.co.uk
communal musical endeavour for that homophobic shite. He should be yelping his archaic and imbecilic views from a battered cardboard box on a street corner whilst selling pens from a cup. You’ve also played Reading/Leeds festival, and return to Download this year to headline the second stage on the Saturday night. How does it feel to go up against Iron Maiden (and The Hives)? Absolutely can't wait. I love playing outdoors, especially at night. I think those opportunities are my most treasured, I guess there's something more primal and natural about being outside and it seems to fit with the music in some strange way. Thankfully we're not actually going head to head with Iron Maiden, as our set finishes shortly before theirs. I’m not entirely sure about The Hives set time, but they're a great act and lovely chaps. Always good fun on a festival bill. There seems to have been a bit of oversensitivity regarding comments made about the Foals at the NME awards recently and the subsequent response. Exactly that. I was making a string of jokes about my opinion of indie bands at the NME awards, they somehow picked up on the comment about them and decided to reply with fervent insults which I thought was rather hilarious, if not a little immature. Why they cared about my opinion enough to be moved to anger I'm undecided. The whole thing was rather peevish and boring really. Post-tour, what does the future hold for the band? Straight back to the studio, or is there the possibility of some more side-projects on the burner? What can we expect from the new material that was recorded in February? To answer in reverse order, the three tracks we recorded recently will slowly be released one by one throughout the year to carry us through. They're all pretty varied tracks, the first of which is a one minute unrelenting beast of a track! I'm hoping to write and release some solo stuff this year, which will be the total antithesis of Enter Shikari. Other than that we plan to write Shikari stuff during the later half of the year. Interview by Matt Crane
See Enter Shikari live this month at Plymouth University on April 6 and Princess Pavilions in Falmouth on April 8.

Deeper Connection If you enjoy your drum and bass fresh, atmospheric, uplifting yet true to it’s roots then Bryn Green AKA Deeper Connection is your man. Cornwall based DJ and producer has been pushing high quality beats that have led him to the forefront of the scene: remixing for heavyweights such as Nookie and receiving critical acclaim from legends like LTJ Bukem. 247’s Lucy Reynolds caught up with him to see what 2013 has to offer… So what’s life like for you right now, what are you up to? Yeah it’s good thanks, I’m drinking a cup of tea on a sunny afternoon in my hometown: Porthleven! I am very busy with music, in the studio etc. Keeping things moving really; working with artists, producers and labels, not just writing music.
raves and DJ’s. The only place playing this sound was the Shirehorse, it was definitely a main output for this music in Cornwall. Of course there were the big warehouse type events at Cornwall’s Coliseum by Obsession and Danceplant. Yeah it has all influenced me and my output for sure.
Busy times for you! So what do you think of the scene in the South West right now? It’s good… but it’s been a bit all over the shop: people jump on bandwagons and seem to follow what’s perceived as cool at the time but there is a big name for drum & bass in Cornwall, there’s still a lot of love for the music. Although the main drum & bass DJ’s always booked for Cornwall are Mampi Swift and Andy C. Promoters are scared to open up a little, they don’t take the opportunities within the genre. I think people should pull together more and bring new DJ’s and artists down to push things forward.
And how does it feel to have the support of industry heavyweights such as Nookie and LTJ Bukem? Yeah, pretty surreal really…these are artists that I grew up listening to and would hear their music in clubs or at raves. It’s mental to have that support from those guys and have them play my stuff now, and to have my own music on their labels. I’ve been really lucky and I feel blessed.
On that note, what do you think of the commercial drum & bass flooding the scence? I’m not really into it, but on the flip side there are four amazing parties a year hosted by S.W.A.T and the Masked Ball pulling lots of people in and good vibes. I played S.W.A.T New Years Eve and I have to say I was really impressed with the sound system and the vibe in there. Sounds good - so how does it feel to have been one of the first drum & bass DJ’s from the South West to make it worldwide? It’s been a long road. I’m a DJ first and foremost, I’ve mixed for around twenty years now and produced for almost ten. DJing is what I love, as well as writing music. It feels good to have my music out on respected labels and have my music released in countries all over the world. Do you think growing up in the time of hardcore and techno influenced your sound today? Yes, definitely. At the time you would just hear tapes from old school
I particularly love the use of vocals in your tracks; do you think it is important to add soul and depth? Thanks. Yeah course… music has to have soul, depth and space. What’s the point in music that lashes it out on the dance floor but does nothing for your head. When I go into making something I like to create a vibe and chase that hopefully has an effect on people. I like the mystical, dreamy vibe. Or music that puts you in a different place, rather than something that’s easy to dance to on drugs… I want to create music with a bit of stick-ability and shelf life. And most importantly you have release confirmed for this year, when can we get our hands on a copy? Yeah, that’s right. This is my 3rd release on vinyl. The new 12" vinyl release is dropping on May 20th on Soul Rebel Recordings. The digital will follow a month or so after the vinyl track; track’s called Love Is A Key and it’s a colab with Scott Allen from L.A. Also loads of new music coming out on Labels such as Good Looking and Cookin Records: Bukem’s downtempo label also some new tracks out on Telluric. My first remix: a Nookie track (Rebounded) received great feedback so was an absolute hounder to have done. I’m always game for working with interesting, different people. That’s what I love the most about what I do.

Get the DrifT
Drift triking started in New Zealand and now looks set to make an impact on the South West’s adrenalin sports scene too. 247’s Sophie Prescott talks to DUB Trike’s Dan Caswell to find out more… “The sport of drift triking can only be described with the words gravity, downhill, three wheels and little to no traction. You start at the top of the biggest hill you can find, sit inches above the ground, push off and wait for the gravity to kick in…” says Dan Caswell, whose company, DUB Trikes has brought the sport to the South West. Reaching speeds of over 40mph, the sport definitely isn’t one for the faint-hearted, as the aim is to literally drift over steep terrains and around bends. The customised trikes themselves look great. With a seat raised merely inches above the floor, two back wheels to slide around and a 20” BMX wheel on the front, each part is customised for a specific purpose. The trikes can also come with or without pedals; “pedal trikes have a freewheel hub on the front wheel, allowing you to pedal on flat surfaces with a place to put your feet, while a peg trike is just used as a place to rest your feet.” Dan explains. “The whole beauty of this sport is not one trike is the same - there are so many customisable features... there are some truly amazing trikes on show across the world!” For an internationally growing, adrenaline junkie’s sport, it’s surprising to find out that the idea for the sport initially came from a kids toy called a ‘Huffy Slider’. “A huffy slider is also a three wheel trike with back plastic wheels and a pedal wheel to drift on drives and pavements. Some crazy guys in New Zealand started messing around on some big hills and started fixing and upgrading things as they went along; over time they fully customized everything on a huffy and today they build and manufacture professional adult drift trikes from scratch.”
The sport is now popular globally, with an ever-expanding online community. “I got involved simply by ending up in a random place on YouTube late one evening, as you do, and spent hours watching these guys relive their childhood,” says Dan enthusiastically. “Now I am in contact with guys from Mexico through to Thailand! There are groups of drifters forming all over the country too; Glasgow, Wales, the Midlands, South Coast, East Coast… its growing fast,” he continues. With such rolling landscapes and diverse terrains, the South West seems perfect for sport - and Dan, along with his company DUB Trikes, is making it his mission to ensure the sport gains popularity the area. “I have fallen in love with the sport, so I am making it my goal to make sure it takes off in the South West so we can have local events and championships, heading towards UK championships in the future.” Lastly we asked Dan where is the best place to go drift triking in the South West? “I have scouted out a some really nice runs and my favourite so far with bends, views and narrow roads is Staddon Lane just above Jennycliff Bay in Plymouth – by the time you’ve reached the bottom you will be gasping for air!”
“You start at the top of the biggest hill you can find, sit inches above the ground, push off and wait for the gravity to kick in...”

To find out more about the sport or about Dan‘s company, you can find DUB Trikes on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DUBTRIKES - Dan’s happy to introduce you to others in the community and answer any questions you may have. His company has full trikes to purchase, or supplies parts for converting your own BMX to a drift trike.

Festival Insight As the biggest city south of Bristol, Plymouth has always lacked a key summer music festival. We have found an event aiming to change all that. There have been many previous attempts by other promoters to hold successful music festivals in the city such as the council sponsored Soundwave Festival on Plymouth Hoe back in the mid nineties that saw the likes of Muse headline, the ill-fated Total Eclipse in 1999 which had the Sugarhill Gang and Orbital headline, Parklife and the Plymouth Music Festival, unfortunately all failed to gain viable ongoing support from music fans.
With an aim to become Plymouth premier music festival, over 200 acts across five stages have been confirmed for 2013 including The Levellers, Alabama 3, Ruarri Joseph, Cosmo Jarvis, Zion Train, the hugely popular Mad Dog McRea, Hazel O'Connor, folk legend Seth Lakeman, Land of the Giants and Josie Ghost amongst others.
Plymouth Volksfest looks set to change all that. Despite the name, (people could be for forgiven for thinking its a car show) it has naturally evolved and whilst retaining the VW element, is firmly focused on creating a flagship music festival for Plymouth. Having launched in 2007 at the beginning of the recession it originally aimed to create a more family focused alternative to the other VW gatherings in the UK, the festival now attracts over 10,000 people and has a strong music live up catering for all tastes. Set in Newnham Park on the edge of Plymouth, this unique setting (complete with a river running through the valley) is the foundation to the festival atmosphere as it feels like the middle of nowhere, but you're only 10 minutes from Plymouth city centre.
Promoters have added a comedy and cabaret stage and an all-new dance arena hosted by Kitchen Disco and Hindsight. They are flying in some big international names direct from Europe to play everything from dance, hip hop, dub step and electronic tunes, headliners include DJ & Producer, Krafty Kuts, (winner of best album at this years Breakspoll), Ed Real, John OO Fleming, Nick the Kid, Claudia Cazacu, Agnelli & Nelson and many more.
Promoter Vince Davies said “We’re proud of the festivals heritage, however, we realised by the third year that the festival had taken on a life of it's own - although the V Dubs, old and new, are still a big part, we are now firmly centred around providing both local and national acts to suit all tastes and ages as well as catering for a wide variety of other arts and a strong emphasis on keeping the kids busy”.
Plymouth Volksfest runs from 24 - 26 May at Newnham Park, Plympton, Nr Plymouth. Discounted weekend tickets from £65 and day tickets are only £25 until 1st May, get them from www.plymouthvolksfest.co.uk

Eating Out Make your mullah go further with a tasty trip to Plymouth’s Veggie Perrin’s. Photo: Angie Knight
This mouth our appetities go in search of the region’s hidden gems Plymouth Veggie Perrin’s
97 Mayflower Street, Plymouth PL1 1SD / 01752 252888
At Veggie Perrin’s, they pride themselves on serving authentic Indian food, with a strict vegetarian policy based on the Hindu principle of non-violence towards all animals, advocated by Gandhi. Tonight’s set menu was on the theme of ‘South Indian Banquet’, and with a 10% student discount, it costs barely over a tenner. It’s easily worth at least twice that, on quality as well as quantity. Affordable but tastes expensive – a winner with us. Most of the dishes are not the standard names you see time and time again in Indian restaurants. Meelu Vada (dumplings) is just one of the starters, served with a delicious coconut and coriander chutney. For the main course you get four dishes a the hot plate to share between two, plus rice, Puri bread (a refreshing change from the standard naan) and Masala Dosa: a gorgeous pancake filled with lentils and vegetables with spices. On non-theme nights, you can eat for well under a tenner and the lunchtime deal of take away curry with rice is only £2.50! Carnivores needn’t be put off – this busy family-run restaurant is popular with non-vegetarians too! Veggie Perrin’s mouth-watering food is exciting, authentic and a refreshing change. Best deal in town, in my humble opinion. Arash Torabi

Gourmandine Crêperie & Bistrot
The Sanctuary
No.4
Situated smack in the middle of Exeter’s city centre, Gourmandine is hardly a hidden gem; at least not in the usual sense. The thing is I’ve walked by countless times and have never so much as given it a second glance. This is a classic case of hiding in plain sight. With so many chain cafés and restaurants in this part of town, Frenchman Bertie’s independent creperie somehow falls under the radar. For entree I opted for French Onion soup – surely a good test of any bistro. This was quite simply one of the tastiest soups I’ve ever tried – rich, sweet and full of flavour. Whilst they do offer a range of casseroles, crepes remain Gourmandine’s staple. For main course I decided to try ‘La Napoléon’, a thin galette filled with chicken, semi-sundried tomatoes and emmental cheese. It’s clear to see why our continental counterparts enjoy these so much – light, moreish, and at £6.50 easy on the pocket too. To finish I went for ‘La Mon Amour’, a sweet crepe filled with strawberries, and topped with vanilla ice-cream and chocolate sauce. This was a feast both for the eye and the taste buds, served with typical French flair.
Despite being located in the heart of Taunton, near to the Somerset County Cricket Ground and the shops, The Sanctuary is easy to miss as it’s tucked away on the quaint cobbles on Middle Street. Once you’ve discovered it, it’ll be firmly on your foodie radar though…. The Sanctuary has a very intimate, cosy, candlelit feel downstairs, where my friend and I ate, in a nice nook. Had the weather have been nice though I’d certainly have made the most of the wonderful roof terrace and eaten al fresco. When it came to ordering I was spoilt for choice, but eventually decided on chicken liver parfait in pistachio butter, onion jam and toast to start – wonderful flavor combinations and gloriously rich and tasty. For my main, I decided on one of three daily specials and went for Lemon Sole. Served as a whole, whopper of a fish it was cooked to absolute perfection, with parsley lemon butter, creamed potato and sprouts – a proper meal. My friend shared a fine selection od West Country cheeses, grapes and biscuits on a wooden platter for desert, which proved to be a pretty perfect end to a sophisticated meal. Classically British good value local food, in pleasant surroundings, served by impeccably presented, friendly staff – winner.
Unless there’s a celebrity chef at the helm it’s easy to forget that some of the South West’s hotels also house some fantastic restaurants. The perfect example is No.4, situated within The Rodney Hotel in the heart of Clifton. The hotel itself was once a large private house and its Georgian features are an enticement to come inside – it would be a challenge to come for dinner and resist the temptation to stay the night. Unusually for a venue such as this it is open for breakfast from 7am, but the lunch and dinner menus are drawn up from seasonal produce in the Bristol and Somerset areas and are changed on a regular basis. A Thai crab cake starter arrived promptly and with a flourish – the service was of a very high standard throughout – and beautifully presented. The crispy outer gave way to the soft flesh underneath, and although there was spicy punch it didn’t override the delicacy of the crab itself. Complementing the theme was a prime piece of rib-eye steak, but stir-fried in sweet chilli and served with crunchy vegetables and couscous. The steak itself was clearly of fine quality and despite the chilli, the meaty flavour came through, while the couscous had a strong aroma of turmeric to cut through the sweetness of the chilli. No.4s prices are more than fair for the quality of the food, and there can be few locations as warm and welcome in which to enjoy it.

New Music Arash Torabi
Edwyn Collins Understated (AED)
On his 8th solo album, Edwyn’s backed by a star-studded cast, which includes Primal Scream’s Barry Cadogan on guitar and Sex Pistols’ Paul Cook on drums. So many elements make this a great record: his clever use of melody, his inimitable voice, vocal range and his on-going love for 60s soul and Motown, which is stamped across Dilemma, Too Bad and Carry On. Slower numbers on the album such as It’s a Reason and Forsooth are heart-warming. Understated is a bright, colourful and adventurous record, which proves that Edwyn Collins is every bit about the now, as much as being the indisputably influential figure for British independent music, since his days in Orange Juice..
John Grant Pale Green Ghosts (Bella Union)
Bella Union has a 15 year history of treating us to fine records. Fleet Foxes, Andrew Bird, Vetiver, Beach House…and the list goes on. Check out this year’s brilliant album by Veronica Falls, for example. With his dark and beautiful songs, John Grant fits in wonderfully in this sea of talent. The backing on his debut album came from his label-mates, the fantastic Midlake, so as a contrast, on this, his second album, he uses electronica as the base for some of the songs. On GMF, he takes a more traditional ballad approach: a highly unlikely song to have the lyrics: “I am the greatest motherf***er you’re ever gonna meet”, sung in his unmistakable heartbreaking voice. A future classic.
Ravi Shankar A Life In Music (Cherry Red)
The recently deceased legendary sitar player hardly needs an introduction, and you couldn’t ever do him justice with just a few words. But you have to start somewhere. He bridged the gap between Indian and Western music, had a huge impact on The Beatles, played at the Woodstock and Monterey festivals, as well as George Harrison’s Concert For Bangladesh. He is the undisputed god of the sitar. This two-disc compilation is a treasure to behold, and it also comes with a well put together booklet. The music on this set was recorded from the late ’50s to the early ’60s, and this is arguably the man’s greatest musical period, which influenced The Beatles.
Ghost Capsules Ghost Capsules (O Solo)
This electronic quartet is the latest project from Tim Simenon of Bomb the Bass. Vocalist, Laura Gomez has a dark folk singing style, which could fit as comfortably into a spooky setting such as say, Marissa Nadler’s eerie psych folk. But it suits Simenon and co’s twisted electro house very nicely, floating on top of rigid and meaty basslines. House, electro and techno have been around for decades now, so what really counts now is creativity and flow. This works as an album, even though a lot of the tracks sound similar. It’s almost like a DJ mix, with a girl singing on top. And Tim Simenon’s been doing this since day zero, so relax folks: you’re in good hands!

My First Tooth Love Makes Monsters (Alcopop!)
My First Tooth are back with their second album and they sound bigger and better than ever. Following on from the folky-vibes of debut ‘Territories’, the Northampton group have spent many a night on the road perfecting their craft. Here we have an eclectic mix of compelling songs, from the catchy radio-friendly opener ‘Claw To Club’ to the familiarsounding single, ‘Past Broadcasts’ (this one would be a perfect sporting anthem). The winner here is the brilliant sing-a-long ‘Heartbeat Retreat’. They leave you with an epic, 50s sounding number, ‘The Palace’, which leaves you dreaming of whiling away an afternoon in an American diner. With genre-defying hints of Nirvana, Longpigs, Grouplove and Snow Patrol, it’s clear MFT are attempting to carve their own musical path with great aplomb.
eagleowl This Silent Year (Fence)
You can’t really go wrong with Fence Records. The Scottish DIY ethos gives artists the space and support to grow and fly, and here’s the latest bird taking advantage of this. Eagleowl sits comfortably with its peers – the likes of Withered Hand, Malcolm Middleton and co. With soft, yet powerful vocals working perfectly alongside the dreamscape/ folky sounds of perfectly executed strings; this is exemplified on the collaboration with Woodpigeon – ‘eagleowl vs. Woodpigeon’, where the lyrics shine through: ‘It’s so quiet when you’re not here’. Here we have a homegrown Phosphorescent, with ‘Summerschool’ proving the perfect love song. The interjection of a reworked version of Cliff Richard’s ‘We Don't Talk Anymore', which exchanges the word ‘talk’ for ‘fuck’ is a real treat. Nice.
Woodpigeon Thumbtacks & Glue (Fierce Panda)
If you could align a single band to the UK’s best festival, End of the Road, Woodpigeon would be it. Their poignant lyrics and beautifully Canadian sounds make for some spellbinding songs. The opening line to the fantastically titled ‘The Saddest Music in the World’ is lush: ‘I slipped a tape under your door...’; ‘Red Rover’ employs a Teenage Fanclub style swoon; and ‘Little Wings’ showcases some fine, Kathryn Williams-esque vocals which wouldn’t be out of place in an English folk club. ‘Sufferin Suckatash’, has a Drive By Truckers energy, rich varied strings weaving their way through a curvy path. The only thing which really lets this album down is when you sit it next to their previous offerings, where they were great, this is merely good.
The Flaming Lips The Terror (Bella Union)
They’ve been around for years, producing a diverse range of sounds – from the early scuzz of ‘Telepathic Surgery’ to the more accessible sounds of ‘Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots’. And here they continue off on a tangent, an electro-fuelled, trippy tangent. ‘Look The Sun Is Risin’ has a distinctive Moby vibe about it, a messy, dancy mix held together by a driving electro beat; while ‘Be Free A Way’ gives a nod to Faithless, but with far more affecting vocals. ‘Try o Explain’ is the only real stand-out track, a Future Islands-esque sonic treat, with sniffs of REM and Sigur Ros. Where The Lips’ live shows have been getting a tad predictable, this is s bit too far out. Come on find the middle-ground lads. Please.

Light Leaks Mole Listening Pearls Records Never heads of these before but apparently they are big in eastern europe, and ones to watch. Electronic in nature but will a soul and dreamy quality that takes you away to a chilled place in a very good way. Most tracks have vocals and it is obvious they have a decent ear for hook and melody but for me, and this isn't usual the highlights are the instrumental parts, a kind of tripped out Daft Punk, or as if Daft Punk woke up one day and decided to be Sigur Ross. Probably not one to be enjoying on a long drive when you are tired but for after club moments or warm summery days this is ideal. For those of you who live in the uk a warm summery day is something they have on the continent.
Runaway Orchestra Runaway Orchestra Mr Bongo
Pretty much forever I've enjoyed a good cover version, long before mtv unplugged and the live lounge turned every great pop song into an "interesting" cover, whilst the current advert theme of strip down a pop song to sell everything is now wearing me down it is still possible to do something fresh with a great cover. So this album is a whole album of them, in a folky dreamy singer songwriter way, which on paper should have me running to the hills. Luckily this has taken a few different ideas that haven't been done before, T Rex and Dylan covers but not the most obvious ones. I highly recommend this if you are into the likes of Eliza Doolittle, with a decent push this could be the next big thing for Radio 2 listeners. Does that mean I'm now officially old?
Ghostface Killah Twelve Reasons to Die Soul Temple Records
There was a time when every single Wu member album was worth checking, times change and the brand has been diluted so can Tony Starks bring the heat back. Short answer is hell yeah. For me the Wu magic was always the Rza's ability to dig deep into soul music and bring the gritty but beautiful loops to life and then the mc would ride them like there was no tomorrow. This album is a concept based on the music on Morricone which thanks to Tarentino is up there in the music conscious right now. Guest spots from U God, Inspectah, Masta Killa etc as well as a wicked tune featuring William Hart from the Delphonics. Overall a wicked album and one that I hope is the start of the Wu returning to the fore. This will be released in cd, lp and comic. naturally…
Talib Kweli
Prisoner of Conscious Javotti Media Talib kweli returns with a whole host of the right kind of people, Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Busta etc. I've always been a fan of Talib and meeting him in a record shop I used to work to was a real highlight but recently I've felt he's made some dodgy choices with producers and labels. Hip Hop is in a strange place right now and everyone is waiting for it to come around to a place of prominence and quality it used to have, this album isn't that album but it is by far the best thing Talib has done for a long while. His usual on point lyrics and flow are here but the beats and hooks are tighter and work far better than on his recent outings. Oh No provides some wicked joints and the Rza's one is off the hook.

New Music Backbone
THE COMPUTERS
Love Triangles, Hate Squares (One Little Indian) The tunes they are a-changin’ − and a very bold change at that. You’ll find remnants of the Exeter quintet’s shouty punk’n’roll trademark on the exquisite ‘Disco Sucks’ and ‘Selina Chinese’ but this is primarily a soul record, reaching for the giddy heights of the Spencer Davis Group, dropping off in Motown and Sun Studios for provisions. And finally Screaming Al Kershaw gets to flaunt his dextrous lung power, the likes of ‘Mr Saturday Night’ (with its ‘Tears Of A Clown’-pilfering refrain) and ‘Nothing To Say’ proving that there are more sharpened arrows to The Computers’ bow than first imagined. So I guess that’s Crooning Al from now on…
CLUTCH
Earth Rocker (Weathermaker) What a way to make an entrance. Maryland's masters of Southern hellfire crunch return with an album that recalls their heaviest and most frenzied sonic assaults of old. Fantastical lyrical arcs have been reined in to impart words of self-aggrandizing charm "What's this about limits? / Sorry I don't know none" ('Earth Rocker') or right-wing baiting righteousness ('Mr Freedom'). Either way there's no fun, or logic, in not being on Clutch's side. The title track is magnificent: part Henry Rollins, part Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Neil Fallon leading the charge with bristling potency. The battle-scarred 'Unto The Breach' is bluescore of the thickest order, while the sultry 'Gone Cold' offers some Gil ScottHeron-esque shade amongst all that searing heat. Go on and git some.
SCHOLARS
Always Lead, Never Follow (Banquet) Bands like Scholars do my head in. Bands that proffer studied modern rock and think they're far more radical than they actually are. Bands that always refer to the twinset holy grail of posthardcore that is At The Drive-In and Refused yet opt to work within accepted, tried and tested, unwittingly conservative parameters, clearly wanting to be noticed rather than believed. If, Scholars had, instead, name-checked The Darkness and Hundred Reasons while traversing octaves on the histrionic 'Black & Blue' or the haughty 'More Medicine' then my distrust might wane. It's not all bad. 'Hydrochaesin' touches a happy nerve. But, ultimately, Rock Sound-friendly fodder is healthy and happily wallowing in its own bloated sense of self-importance.
DEAR READER Rivonia (City Slang)
A reflection/indictment on apartheid-era South Africa, 'Rivonia' is Dear Reader, aka Cheri MacNeil's attempt to make sense of the dark history of her homeland. One part Regina Spektor, one part Kate Bush, one part Soweto gospel, her third album seethes with a displaced anger and a strong desire to find small truths amongst all the layers of corruption and cruelty. It's deceptively rousing stuff, full of reminiscences, hopes and disappointments from the quasi-tribal lament, 'Took Them Away', and the stark piano moodscape of 'Good Hope', to the trad-strokes of 'Man Of The Book' and the none-more-dignified 'Victory'. Indeed, 'Rivonia' reads like a folk album but one with a universality that is often overwhelming.
www.247magazine.co.uk
ZOZOBRA
Savage Masters (Brutal Panda) It's a known fact that everyone eventually bows to the power of monster rock. Case in point, Caleb Scofield, whose time served with Cave In and Old Man Gloom has awakened his inner crust. Zozobra's first two albums were more reminiscent of his other work, more psyche-metal than hellbastard hardcore, but on 'Savage Masters' the Boston bruisers have toned down the atmospherics, dialled up the relentless sonic whirlwind of Trap Them et al, added a slither of sludge and nailed it to anarcho-nihilistic musings that result in not-sohappy bunny vignettes like 'Venom Hell', 'Black Holes' and the titanic hammer blow of 'Born In A Blaze'. Not ground-breaking but certainly capable of leaving a crater-sized dent.
MEAT PUPPETS Rat Farm (Megaforce)
Seminal country psyche-punks, Meat Puppets, are still dodging retirement even if it does mean never returning to the wild abandon of old. Thankfully their 14th album is a gracefully fired-up beast with little sign of its predecessor 'Lollipop''s languor. Instead we're treated to the stirring cowpunk harmonies of 'One More Drop' and the acid-prairie lilt of 'Leave Your Head Alone'; even dangling an Irish motif in front of 'Waiting' and charging guitars into dulcet melodies on 'Sweet'. You can't imagine them making many new fans before frontdude, Curt Kirkwood, hangs up his Stetson for good (or passes it onto his son, Elmo, who plays second guitar) but there's plenty to like here, as long as you're not in a rush to get anywhere.
THE THERMALS Desperate Ground (Saddle Creek)
You've got to hand it to The Thermals. Not many bands who dole out ragged-trousered scuzz-pop ever get to half a dozen platters. And with instant gems like 'Born To Kill' in their new arsenal it's clear that the Portland posse have longevity and spirit to spare. To the uncaring ear, the likes of 'Faces Stay With Me' and the elegiac 'Our Love Survives' probably sound over-stylised but The Thermals have always grasped beyond their immediate surroundings to a new wave ethos that is timeless, earnest and full of drama; like REM if they lived under a bush. And if the uber-tasteful Saddle Creek imprint are willing to embrace them, you've got no excuse not to follow suit.
PINEAPPLE
www.myspace.com/pineappleuk Old punks playing old punk is fine in my book, especially when there isn't a hint of irony or self-consciousness. Step forward Plymouth's pricklesome purveyors, Pineapple, and their new disc 'Pineapple II'. It's hardly cutting-edge but what they lack in complexity they atone for with honestto-goodness, old-fashioned grit. Opener 'PTS/ ACE' drops in with a nod to early Wire, all post-punk scrabbling and deadpan vocals, while mid-tempo riffage and spindly guitar hooks dominate the likes of 'Werewolf' and 'Bric-a-Brac'. The sprightly 'Nailbomb' steps on the gas pedal; 'Openings' has a faint whiff of The Subhumans' paranoiac punch; and 'Zero Factor' runs off on an experimental arc, which adds necessary colour to the palette.
Louk
Ad.Lib
She Lost Control [Berlin Consumer] Although this is a relatively new label, both releases so far have really impressed. Obviously Berlin based, their ethos of 'focusing on raw stripped back, industrialized techno for darker environments' means it's pretty safe to add them to the 'labels to look out for' column for 2013. On 'She Lost Control' by Switzerland's Ad.lib you can really hear the influence of Detroit techno from two decades ago, and this is one hell of a dark clanking number that really comes alive for the 3am crowd. Out of the remixes on offer, Rebekah's stands out, and is somewhat hypnotising but the atmospheric effort from label boss Joseph McGeechan and Monya's subversive groove are more than worthy of a listen too.
Knobs
A Random Collection Of Frequencies [Nachtstrom Schallplatten] It's getting to the stage that I am blindly buying this label (and their sub label Starkstrom Schallplatten)'s output because you can guarantee you will get some well produced deep, dark and atmospheric grooves every time that rock a dance floor. 'Atavic', one of the older releases by the rather quirky named 'Knobs' is still in my record bag to date. Both originals on offer, 'Grit' and 'Change', are more than worthy of a play, with very intricate percussive grooves that really play with the distortion, while last months favourite 'Bas Mooy' (with his excellent Planet Rhythm release), turns in a dark and relentless remix of 'Grit' that builds really well and is suited for the peak time sets.
Art Bleek+Jamie Anderson Pico [Arthouse]
Although something a little bit deeper than what would normally be placed in my record box, a good track is a good track, and this EP from (a collaboration between Bristol's Jamie and Parisian born but Los Angeles residing Art, is exactly that. Although the three tracks on offer are very similar, 'Pico 3' is the most appealing, where Warm brooding chords build up nicely over some not so pacey percussion and the overall groove is fantastic. You can really tell the Jazz influence of both artists and in true Arthouse style this has massive crossover appeal to both techno and house fans alike. Definitely one the likes of Carl Craig and Percy X you can imagine spinning.
P.E.M
Another Attempt [Druck] There hasn't been much material I’ve found in the tech or harder trance world that has been inspiring over the last six months. Most releases have sounded like they want to break into the Top 40 or are just pointlessly re-hashing old ideas that were better produced years ago anyway. Thankfully you can always rely on Druck to constantly differentiate from the norm. Here, Argentina's P.E.M makes his début with the genre defying 'Another Attempt' that goes straight for the jugular with a monstrous kick, chopped vocals and a distorted bassline. Despite finding the breakdown of this rather mundane and clichéd, after a quick Cubase edit, this one went straight in my record box and has been cained ever since.

Curated by PhD researcher Cara Davies, this exhibition is a fragmented narrative of his creative and personal histories. Asking: who is Franko B? What can we perceive about his identity through the archive? What relationships does this provoke between the audience, document and artist? Why do we fall in love with him? The exhibition will showcase a diverse range of documents from Franko’s archive, challenging what they embody and disseminate about his artistic practice and the contexts he works in.

Plymouth CHEZ PAULETTE AND THE SUNSET STRIP, Peninsula Arts, Plymouth University, Drakes Circus, 01752 267131, plymouth. ac.uk 7.30pm, Café open 1pm – 3pm daily Set in the hills of the Sunset Strip, Chez Paulette, one of the new European-style coffee houses that emerged in Los Angeles in the late 1950’s, attracted film stars, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Rita Hayworth and Jack Nicholson. This Hollywood haven was run by the artist’s father, Max Lewin, an occasional actor and immigrant from Europe. Chez Paulette was so smooth that a set of the café was featured, with Max as host, in the detective series 77 Sunset Strip. Chez Paulette has been reconstructed again, this time in Plymouth. Come along and experience that lure of the afterdark; sip an espresso, watch a detective movie, and bring that European culture that travelled to Hollywood back again. www.247magazine.co.uk

IRON MAN 3 (TBC) Released: 26 April
Dir: Shane Black Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle 2012 Fresh from kicking-butt in The Avengers Assemble, Iron Man gets his third strike at box office gold. The film pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose is so evil he could challenge Dr.Evil (Austin Powers) to a game of evil strip poker and still come out on top. This terrorist is called the Mandarin, and he is hell-bent on destroying Stark’s personal world. His life in tatters Stark embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This film has the feeling of Kill Bill being transplanted into a Marvel comic, with Iron Man out for revenge. The franchise has so far been all metal and no mettle, but writer/director Shane Black should bring much needed whit and pathos to this hulking great series. It also helps that it’s in 3D, which should be fun with all the aerial acrobatics and explosions.
EVIL DEAD (TBC)
THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN (U)
THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES (TBC)
OBLIVION (TBC)
OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN (TBC)
SCARY MOVIE 5 (TBC)
Released: 19 April Dir: Fede Alvarez Starring: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas 2012/US/91 min A horror classic that was filmed on a shoe-string budget is remade for several million more and the results are certainly less effective. In this retelling of the Sam Raimi original, five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. Hopefully this will be the final nail in the coffin for remakes in this genre, although I love to be proved wrong.
Released 12 April Dir: Joseph Kosinski Starring: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman and Andrea Riseborough 2012/US/TBC Tom Cruise (Scientology, it makes perfect sense!) goes off world in this blockbuster- baiting sciencefiction epic. The Cruiser plays a veteran soldier sent to a distant planet, as punishment after a court martial. He is sent there to destroy the remains of an alien race. But the arrival of an unexpected traveller causes him to question what he knows about the planet and the destruction he is reaping on the inhabitants. Hopefully this will be more Minority Report than I am Legend, as Cruise is getting a bit old for old for this s*it! www.247magazine.co.uk
Released: 5 April Dir: Peter Hedges Starring: Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgerton and Dianne Wiest 2012/US/105 min After receiving bad news from a fertility doctor, Cindy and Jim Green try to bury their dreams of having a child by writing out all the great traits their child would have and putting them in a box in the garden. During a freak storm in the middle of the night, they awake to find a boy named Timothy, standing in their kitchen calling them mom and dad. This should be heart-warming stuff that nicely reinvents the Pinocchio tale.
Dir: Antoine Fuqua Starring: Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman 2012/US/TBC In this exciting looking action thriller, Gerard Butler plays disgraced former Presidential bodyguard Mike Banning. He finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack in which the Commander in Chief is held hostage. But in order to redeem himself and find inner peace he uses his insider knowledge to rescue the President (played by Aaron Eckhart) from his kidnappers. This effort from the director of Training Day should hopefully be good fun.
Released: 12 April Dir: Derek Cianfrance Starring: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes 2012/US/140 min A motorcycle stunt rider called Luke, (Ryan Gosling) likes to live life in the fast lane. He turns his hand to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their new-born child. But the stakes rise as Luke is put on a collision course with an ambitious police officer, Avery Cross, (Bradley Cooper) looking to quickly move up the ranks in a police department riddled with corruption by bringing down our dare devil rider.
Released 12 April Dir: Malcolm D. Lee Starring: Simon Rex, Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen 2012/US/TBC Spoof central here as the Scary Movie franchise returns for another pop at the horror genre and just about every other popular release of the last few years. The story, if you can call it that, sees a couple begin to experience some unusual activity after bringing their newborn son home from the hospital. All very Paranormal Activity, but what matters is the gross-out comedy, naked teens and Charlie Sheen. Could be good for a laugh or two on release.
