ILLUSTRATION BY JAMES WILSON James studied at the University of Plymouth (back when the art campus was in Exeter) and graduated with a BA Hons in Design: Illustration in the summer of 2007. Shortly after that, he moved to Bristol, built up his portfolio a bit, set up a website and won the Don’t Panic “Design The Pack” competition. He is currently working as a freelance illustrator and designer. He’s inspired by many different things, from album cover artwork, to indie comics and has a preference for anything hand-drawn that shows a human touch. Artists he’s into at the moment include James Jean, Billie Jean and French, there are a whole load more but he says he’s rubbish with names. James hopes to do more freelance editorial work in the future, as well as album covers, posters, exhibitions, and collaborations with other artists.jameswilsonillustration.com

They say time flies when you’re having fun, if you want proof, just take a look at South Wales’ legendary promoters of the same name who have recently celebrated their 15th birthday. Having been responsible for some of the biggest events ever to happen in South Wales at amazing venues like the City Hall and Coopers Field in central Cardiff, and more recently at Glam, Liquid and Life, we though it was time to find out a little more about Henry Blunt, the man behind Time Flies...
What’s your fantasy line-up? Sasha & Digweed in the Main Room, then Alex Patterson from The Orb in Room two with a live set by Dreadzone…
Time flies indeed – you recently celebrated your 15th birthday. How did everything kick off for you with the clubnight? It all started in 1992 when I moved to Cardiff from Manchester and hooked up with other like-minded people. We started a night called Spice of Life at Cardiff Uni in 1993 and then launched Time Flies in the Coal Exchange and City Hall buildings in 1994 – it took off overnight pretty much and hasn’t stopped since.
How did your spin offs in the Valleys come about and what exactly do they involve? I’ve done nights in the Valleys from time to time over the years – it usually happens when I’m offered a venue up there. The locals create a great atmosphere, that’s for sure – no airs and graces, just a solid party vibe.
Does being based in Cardiff help or hinder things, and if so, how? You need to be around the city you promote in to keep an eye on the promotion and to be part of the vibe that surrounds any scene. I did however benefit from being based in London in the late nineties when I promoted all the Mixmag parties as well as Time Flies. Having that distance for a period allowed me to see the wood for the trees and I enjoyed some anonymity there too, which was cool. What are the biggest highlights for you to date? Time Flies being broadcasted live on BBC Radio1 back in 2001 was pretty special – 4000 people in the Ice Rink giving a massive shout out when Pete Tong announced we were live on air will remain with me forever. And finally opening our own club GLAM this year to coincide with our 15th Birthday is a massive highlight too.
Words: NME
Any low points? The Millennium New Years Eve was about as low as you can get – but it gave clubland the reality check it desperately needed and a good kick up the arse. Can you tell us about your funniest moment at an event? I once promoted at a venue where there was an electric wall by the dancefloor. We would set up the stage behind the wall and then at the given moment the wall would go up to reveal the surprise special live act to a packed crowd of clubbers. One night we had the Happy Mondays on and the wall got stuck half way up so the clubbers were only able to see the band from their knees down for the first couple of tunes until the electrician arrived!
What is the secret to being a long lasting promoter – you’ve been around longer than most! Learn how to switch off from promoting otherwise it will do your swede in.
Is there anything you’d do differently if you had the chance to do it all again? No not really – if I’d been a DJ rather than a promoter I’d probably have retired by now though, ha ha! If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing? God knows – something creative but very peaceful – like marking out football pitches… Any advice for aspiring promoters out there? Focus on your own nights rather than worrying about what’s going on up the road. Look out for more superb nights from Henry with the Bedrock Allnighter on Sunday 12 April with a four hour set from John Digweed at Liquid Nightclub, Time Flies with Judge Jules at Glam Nightclub on Saturday 25 April, and Superstar Sundaze with Carl Cox at Liquid in Cardiff. timefliesuk.com WIN!!! We have a pair of VIP tickets to give away for Superstar Sundaze at Liquid Nightclub featuring the legendary Carl Cox! As a VIP you’ll get to jump the queues and will receive a couple of complimentary drinks on arrival. To enter, email 247@outofhand. co.uk with TIME FLIES in the subject line and tell us why you deserve to be a VIP at Liquid! Competition closes on 24 April. Terminal Illness
(No Cure Records) So here’s the coo, you like 9th Wonder but feel he is a bit smooth, you miss the RZA but he fell off, you’ve had enough of MTV jiggy hip hop and are thirsting for a touch of realness. For some hip hop that feeds your head as well as your soul you need to check this album. Great soul sampling hip hop, quality MCs from both sides of the Atlantic, so if you liked Kanye before he went auto tune, Little Brother or any Justice League then this album is for you. Aldo Vanucci
Radio Trip
Music Heads (Jalapeno Records) This is basically a load of old recycled funk riffs & basslines, which you’ve heard a million times before. They may as well have just copied up a bunch of Ninja Tune tracks from around ’95, and I’m sure the results would have been exactly the same. At a time like this, when dubstep is pushing recording techniques and creativity to the limit, it’s hard to imagine why anybody even bothers to make this stuff anymore. Old hat. Arash Torabi
Fat Cat
Floored Memory... Fading Location (Fat Cat Records)
A collection of songs from all the recent Fat Cat releases placed in chronological order so you get old right up to the brand new Hauschka track. This collection of pieces range from neo-romantic Max Richter piece to the intense and haunting Steal Compass/ Drive North/Disappear. This is an album full of poignant, deep, forward thinking and classical music. The tag classical music should not push you away, this is contemporary classical music, the sort that Massive Attack and Portishead would be proud of. This is deep, deep stuff, but is accessible, and infinitely rewarding with time and an open mind. SUPERDUPERDAN

bring a certain playfulness to his songs, whilst maintaining a strings-laden/melancholic feel. They’re playing Exeter Phoenix on May 14, and I’m there, baby. A definite winner. Arash Torabi
The Xcerts
In The Cold Wind We Smile (Xtra Mile)
There’s something immediately familiar coursing through Aberdeen neo-rockers, The Xcerts, veins that can’t be ignored. The epic crashing refrains, the poignant vocal reach, that Caledonian accent, the clarity... At times, you’re thinking it’s Idlewild back in their metamorphic stage or a stadium version of Biffy Clyro. Whatever. None of it changes the fact that this debut album is crushingly anthemic, designed to trail heartbreaks and longing, and pretty awesome. Backbone
Black Lips
200 Million Thousand (Vice)
By dint of their self-proclaimed (and oftexclaimed) amorality, Atlanta’s Black Lips’ every debauched episode can only do them favours. Ass-baring in India, drugs, piss-play, and songs like ‘Let It Grow’ that seem to be taking the band’s insistence on authentic ‘60s lo-fi scuzz to the point of pastiche. But once again the psychedelic swamp-rats succeed because there’s a slop bucketful of songs here that are rife with garage menace and hazy, 13th Floor Elevator swagger. Backbone
Cursive
Mama, I’m Swollen (Saddle Creek)
It’s hard not to feel like a voyeur when listening to Cursive. Tim Kasher’s deeply personal candour can leave you dropjawed and teary-eyed in one fell stroke. ‘Mama…’ is another stride away from what’s come before and it takes a while for the album to settle into one’s psyche but, once there, it’s a treasure. And ‘Mama, I’m Satan’ is always on hand to put the gristle back on the bone with neat lyrical joys like “The world was built on a tickle between our legs”. Darkly delectable. Backbone
Folk collective from Canada deliver a Propagandhi second album, with 14 near-perfect songs, Supporting Caste reminiscent of the late 60s/early 70s. in leaps and bounds, and stayed true to an impassioned ideology – anarchist, vegan, humanist, occasionally fatalist – that doesn’t always parry with the fickle nature of punk youth. Erykah Badu
New Amerykhah: Part One (4th World War) (Universal Records / Control Freaq Records) It’s been ten years since Erykah Badu’s debut let us into a bewitching secret garden of love, life and ideology, and her releases since have kept the fire burning but its this album that burns brightest. What comes across in New Amerykah is the use of underground producers to provide the music for Eryah’s unmistakable voice and verse. Its clearly the doing of an artist invigorated and inspired the by hip hop innovation found in work of Madlib, Sa Ra, Georgia Ann Medrews, Karriem Riggins, 9th wonder and new husband Jay Electronica, who all feature on the album. Invest in it... NOW! Andy Mac
J*Davey
The Beauty in Distortion /Land Of the Lost (Interpendent Media)
This has been around for a minute but still deserves more attention. Producer Brook D’Leau and singer Miss Jack Davey caused a bit of a stir with this double offering when people first heard it. Ranging from electronic hip hop to soul to pop to some freaky other sh+t, breathy hot-under-the-collar singing and some VERY nice beats are what stand out here. It’s a great stereotype smashing collection of tunes I could lazily say has the spirit of everything from Bettty Davis, Grace Jones, and Parliament to playfulness of Tribe Called Quest and Tom Tom Club running through it. Seek it. Andy Mac
Harmonic 313
When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence (Warp)
Mark Prichard returns to Warp with his latest project. Around the hip hop template of some of his previous output, Mark adds bass music pressure, computer game/sci-fi aesthetics, vintage techno synths and a more Dilla style swing. Detroit MCs Phat Kat and Elzie add further connection to The Motor City on one of the only two vocal tracks, the other features long-time collaborator Steve Spacek. The production is pristine, exquisite and bass heavy, so much depth its almost scientific. Great, conceptual and futuristic stuff! Andy Mac
DEMOS Sienna – “Walking With Wolves”
Superb, heavy rock vibes here in the form of Sienna. Every track is a beauty. I can’t believe they are not signed. They could give LimpBizkit a run for their money ! With fat riffs and properly structured tunes they can certainly write proper songs . It’s angry gear but with heart. Track 1 “Under A Burning Sky” is the one for me here …… SUPERB !! myspace.com/siennauk
About 9 – DEMO
Brighton based dread-head About 9 creates ambient beats and this 7 track demo spans this genre nicely. Not massively lifechanging gear in general and it has been done a few times before but it doesn’t upset and stays in tune. Spark a fat one and let the music drift into your cerebral cortex ….. u wont get hurt ! myspace.com/siennauk
Sliptone
Sliptone creates party hip-hop-bangers mixed with Latino carnival vibes and lush down-tempo numbers. It’s catchy as f*ck and would rock any decent club night “Melos Liberals” and “Sugar” being worthy of a vinyl pressing in my book ! There’s some ace tunes on his myspace you should definitely check out that don’t appear on this CD… myspace.com/sliptone
Dove Stone
An Indie guitar-based band here and influenced by the likes of Pink Floyd, Happy Mondays, Rush and Nick Drake, you can definitely hear the Manchester in the music with Dove Stone. With a few less synth’s in the recordings they would be a warmer sounding outfit for me. They write proper tunes and execute them very well on this CD and can be seen in and around Manchester healthily gigging. myspace.com/therealdovestone
Burly Chassis
A space funk, pop band form Bristol here. Contained within are tonnes of nostalgic synth sounds fused with live drums and Mark King ( Level 42 ) style bass playing. It’s a weird mixture and a little angular for me but I can appreciate that the bass player is a well established musician but there’s a little too much focus on that for me. While the drummer keeps up with the bass the rest of the music are merely percussive space bongo’s and synth’s… myspace.com/burlychassislive
Little Glitches
Eric M O
Home-made, stylistic and super original funk. With some pretty obscure timing and equally obscure and original sounds contained within. Dublin based Eric M O fuses a Future-world-funk production quality that one rarely hears in this day and age of music production. By NOT allowing the MUSIC program to guide his sounds and timing Eric’s personality shines through beautifully and he manages to capture your ears and allows you to get your head-nod on….you need LIVE DRUMS though sir ! myspace.com/ericmomusic
Daytoner BONUS TRACKS
With a few releases under their belt already, Daytoner cannot be questioned on production skill and release-worthy tracks. Here they burn me a few BONUS tracks to check out. It’s fun gear from the Northern Soul / Funk / Mash-up stable. There’s a particular Bosa Nova track that would definitely have the kids moving… Tight !!! myspace.com/daytoner
Carquemaezla
This is one crazy, bad-ass female MC. Seems she’s taken tracks from a KRS Jon 12” and dropped some lyrics over it. Its got a bit of out of tune singing here and there and some over-indulgent lyrics as well as some very frightening subject matter here… to the point where it sounds like she might stalk and KILL KRS Jon if he doesn’t release this… SHTOOOPS ! myspace.com/carquemaezlamusic

Bjorn Rune Lie & Lindsey Stainer, Here Gallery, Stokes Croft, Bristol, 0117 9422 222, thingsfromhere.co.uk, Tues-Sat 10.30am – 6.30pm (closed Sun & Mon) Take it to the Hills is an exhibition of new drawings, collages, prints and paintings by Bristol based artists Lindsey Stainer and Bjorn Rune Lie. Drawing inspiration from old National Geographics, 60’s handicraft books and patchwork quilts, Lindsey’s playful and evocative collages have a timeworn quality. Letting his acrylics rest in their tubes, the normally colourful Bjorn is using this exhibition as a chance to focus his efforts on pure drawing, working in pen and ink, pencil and charcoal. Despite the monochrome hues, his exquisite pictures of curious characters, mysterious trees and strange situations are as vibrant as ever.

When his neighbor Thao, a teenager under pressure from his gang member cousin, tries to steal his Gran Torino, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. He is also, in some peoples opinion , one of the Italy’s most corrupt politicians. Over the years he has been caught up in numerous scandals ranging from kidnapping to Mafia-organised murder, yet he has always managed to battle his way through the courts and come out clean. The nicknames he has acquired in this process are numerous. Il Divo takes a blunt yet stylish look at the life of this remarkable man. Young Victoria (PG)

You get to see the power struggles that brought her to the throne and her enduring romance with Prince Albert. This film written by Julian Fellowes, who wrote the Oscar winning script for Gosford Park , is a telling portrait of a young woman forced to assume a role for which she was ill prepared but that would help shape the British Empire. 7 Apr: The Cube Microplex,
Bristol, 0117 907 4190, microplex.cubecinema.com Dir: Alfred Hitchcock Starring: Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman 1946/ US/101 mins Not to be confused with the recent Biggy Small’s biopic of the same name. This is stylish espionage thriller from Alfred Hitchcock. Beautiful Alicia (Bergman) is an alcoholic socialite living in South America. She falls for the dashing US agent Devlin (Grant) and there is a real sense that she will turn her life around but as Devlin emotionally blackmails her into seducing a German expatriate suspected of Nazi affiliations, emotional darkness falls over the three characters and a mood of unease builds. Written by the great Ben Hecht, this is a taut suspenseful tale of trust and betrayal, exploitation and sacrifice. Genova (15)

Free-spirited painter Juan Antonio (Bardem), his tempestuous ex-wife Maria (Cruz), and the carefree young American Vicky (Johansson), become entwined in a volatile love triangle under the disapproving but envious gaze of Vicky’s straight-laced friend Cristina (Rebecca Hall). BLOC Festival 09 was without doubt the best yet, period. Butlins, Minehead was a perfect new home for 6,000 party heads. With the sound system one of the sweetest heard in years, Aphex Twin twisted everyone’s minds, Skreem and Benga rammed it with more rewinds in an hour than you thought possible, Rusko live was awesome, and Africa Bambaataa ticked all the guilty pleasure boxes with his old skool hip hop. Get ready for 2010 now...
