A new competition aimed at the top cocktail bars in Bristol and Cardiff looks set to shake things up on the bartending scene! Top mixologists from both cities will take part in this competition, which will happen over two stages. In the first round, bartenders were required to create an original 42 Below vodka cocktail (using any variant), and with a nod to the Midnight Cocktail Club, participating bartenders marked each other’s cocktails. No one could control the “sun at Glastonbury or the conclusion that the Mercury panellists came to... ” magazine

The last twelve months have been particularly good ones for Guy Garvey, Craig Potter, Pete Turner, Mark Potter, and Richard Jupp – otherwise known as indie rock band Elbow. Not only did they have triumphant performances at festivals like Glastonbury and Latitude, a successful UK tour and a North American tour that went down a storm, but the band were finally awarded a Mercury Music Prize for their latest album, ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ (they were first nominated for the prize back in 2001 for debut album, ‘Asleep In The Back’).

With a solid fan base, and the constant praise of the critics, it seems strange that the band who are now being lauded as one of the UK’s best have been left off the winners lists for so long. Guy pointed out, “There are too many random factors to pin point what happened this year that didn’t happen in previous years. Artistic and financial support from our excellent record label [Fiction] definitely is part of it, but no one could control the sun at Glastonbury or the conclusion that the Mercury panellists came to...” he pauses, then laughs. “So I’d like to take the credit, it was me, all me!” Of course, as front man of the band and lyricist, you’d expect Guy to take some credit, but it’s plain as day that he’s not speaking from his ego here – it’s just a light-hearted joke. They talk about themselves as the “longest surviving uncorrupt democracy in history”, and all five members of the band are lifelong friends. Mark adds, in his gentle Mancunian lilt, “We feel very lucky to have somehow shaped this career out of the little noises that we put together. It’s been almost two decades since Guy and Mark met at sixth form in Bury, near Manchester in 1990 and together with To be able to do that with your best friends, and it take us right Pete and Richard formed the band, Mr. Soft. Mark’s brother, round the world, well, we feel dead lucky. I’m sure there have been points where all of us have individually thought, I can’t do Craig, joined up soon after and by 1997 the five-piece were this anymore, we’re not getting anywhere, but we’ve all stuck called Elbow and had a deal with Island Records. A rocky with it.” career followed, with the band being dropped and then signed with new labels several times. “What doesn’t kill us Amidst the awards ceremonies and the spiralling album sales, makes us stronger,” said Mark. “We just pick ourselves up, Elbow are forging ahead with new projects. Plans are afoot and nothing really matters other than the fact that the five for a kid’s animated film at some point in the future, and as of us still love being in a room together and making music, they’ve already mentioned, the fifth album is well underway. and that’s what it’s always been about, right from the very In March they’re releasing a limited edition box set featuring beginning.” From delicate, beautiful ballads to melancholy a new version of The Seldom Seen Kid, recently recorded at stories and pulsing, anthemic rock, the band’s sound is Abbey Road with the BBC Concert Orchestra. They are also distinctive and steeped with the gravitas that passionate collaborating with the Manchester based Halle Orchestra musicians instil in their work. Guy’s lyrics and the rest of (Britain’s oldest orchestra), plan to go out to Australia in the band’s music take you on a journey with each of their April for a few gigs, and their UK tour in March finishes up at four albums telling a different tale – from love to loss, each Wembley Arena. Mark says excitedly, “I remember one of the album designed to be listened to as an album, something first times me and Guy ever met, sitting down and watching that might seem like an outdated concept in today’s single Queen Live at Wembley, saying to each other that in a couple download crazy music industry but that underwrites their of years time that would be us… nineteen years later, we’ve dedication to make the music they love. Mark explains, “We’ve already started our next record. In January we made finally made it!” And it couldn’t be more deserved. sure we spent some time together, getting in the right frame of mind – playing different music to each other, listening to stuff together, making sure we’re all on the same page. It’s elbow.co.uk • myspace.com/elbowmusic a funny one, because now we feel like for the first time ever, we can write a record that we know people are going to go Elbow tour dates in the South West: and buy. We want to do something a bit more rustic, a bit 10 Mar, Colston Hall, Bristol [SOLD OUT] rougher around the edges, a little bit more guitar based and 11 Mar, Plymouth Pavilions organic. And,” he points out, “We’re never ever going to sit 12 Mar, Newport Centre down and try to write a “commercial”, radio friendly single, because we’ll just end up hating it.” Band Photo: Andy Whitton • Live Photos: Shirlane Forrest Although a continuous stream of critical acclaim has followed the band for the 19 years they’ve been together, the commercial success that many thought they deserved has eluded them. But last year, the thundering, rock driven sound of single ‘Grounds For Divorce’ was all over TV on adverts and trailers, the sun shone on their epic, goosebumpraising Glasto performance of ‘One Day Like This’, album sales went platinum, and the band received three Brit award nominations for Best Live Act, Best British Band and British Album. Success finally crash-landed in the patient arms of the band, after years of hard work and ups and downs. 247 Magazine caught up with lead vocalist and lyricist Guy Garvey and guitarist and backing vocalist Mark Potter ahead of their tour in March for a chat about sun, success and sticking things out…

The Future Sound of London, or FSOL as they are often known, are regarded as pioneers in electronic music. Since Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans met in the mid ‘80s, the duo have spanned many genres, fusing elements from techno, dub, acid, trip-hop and electronica, to name but a few. Early dancefloor success with the 1991 release of ‘Papua New Guinea’ was followed by a much more experimental period, seeing the release of both ‘Lifeforms’ and ‘ISDN’ in 1994. They have adopted many other aliases such as Amorphous Androgynous, using them to explore a wide range of musical and visual styles, moving away from dance music into a more spiritual, psychedelic domain. Relentlessly diverse and prolific, they have captivated audiences both with their studio recordings and live performance. Amidst anticipation and intrigue, the pair are now set to play their first live show as The Future Sound of London for 12 years, at BLOC 2009. Gaz took some time out of remixing a track for Oasis to have a quick natter with us… You are playing live at BLOC 2009 as The Future Sound of London for the first time since 1997. What is the significance of playing as FSOL, rather than one of your other aliases? We are beginning the process of re-evaluating the FSOL paradigm with a view to a new album. The Amorphous Androgynous comes from a very different philosophical place. Now is the time to explore the FSOL dimension again...it feels relevant.

The recent advances in software have opened the world of musical creation to a much wider crowd than ever before. Do you see this as a positive or negative thing? Both. It’s great that musicians don’t sit in superior chambers of ivory towers. Negative that the sheer quantity of music available diminishes concentration span. Everyone is perpetually flicking like one giant remote control. It’s the greatest, most unfulfilling channel hop of all time! As a duo, do you both have similar intentions in the studio, or do you approach the music from very different angles? FSOL: Ying and yang...we both are quite able individually but when we pull at each other in certain complementary ways we achieve something far greater. We both uncannily have exactly the same ears as to whether something is great whatever the style of music. At its best this achieves a revolutionary sound with real heart and substance!! In recent years you have been delving into the archives. Do you see the new live show as an extension of this, or will be seeing some new material? I don’t see the live show as a nostalgia trip and the archive album releases aren’t really either. Obviously we will play some of ‘the hits’, but really we see it as a great catalyst to writing new material.

As one of the headline acts at BLOC, what can we expect How would you describe FSOL to someone that had never from the live show? An audiovisual immersive headspace, triggering and exploring heard of you? As a band – deeply contemplative immersion in a the senses and the emotions and exploring possibility!! contradictory soundfield. A 3D headspace encompassing the You are seen by many as something of an enigma. How do struggle for balance. A sonic revolution bringing mankind home in silent union. Teachings from the electronic brain. you think the ‘open studio’ interaction between you and As producers, we are anything and everything we want to the audience in the live show affects this? be. A headspace that hopefully broadens horizons, provokes If at some point we fully realise our ideas the human questions and opens you up to the possibilities... connection will really have no bearing on the emotional impact of the entertainment. Rumour has it that despite its success, you weren’t entirely satisfied with the 1994 album ‘ISDN’, due in part to technological limitations. Was this the case? And if so, are you hoping to rectify this with the new show? It wasn’t the album...by its very nature ISDN threw up many questions. It’s not so much solely about technology...more that we feel we now understand a little bit more about what we started and why potentially it could develop from here. 12 |

Intrigue r e c o r d s

If the deeper side to D&B is your thing, you’re probably also feeling Intrigue, the club-night put together by The Insiders, the dynamic Bristol production duo with records out on a whole bunch of labels, including Metalheadz. As well as being a well-respect night for the last 6 years, Intrigue is now also a record label, run by Insiders man Ben Payne, AKA Soundscape. 2009 looks exciting for Intrigue- both the night and the label, whose aim is to deliver deep, leftfield D&B from established artists and rising talents alike. The Insiders, Break, Survival, Random Movement and Eveson are all involved, and there’s music to come from fresh talent, Squash. The Insiders’ Ben (AKA Soundscape) is here to tell us more. When and how did Intrigue start? I started it with my production partner Joe Wills in 2003, as a small midweek night. After the first year moved to a weekend slot, with different spots around Bristol. By the end of 2005 I’d started running the night single-handedly, at a monthly Friday at Dojo Lounge. It’s built up a strong following since then, with regulars who come to every night: students and Bristol locals. Tell us about Intrigue’s vibe. Quality, deep music on a fat sound system, with no pretence- just a friendly, up-for-it crowd. It’s all about the deeper end of drum & bass. The label launch party at Motion will be exciting, with a great range of acts playing: Ben Westbeech (DJ set with live vocals), to Krust (oldskool set) and Icicle playing two sets: d&b & techno. Will you represent that vibe on your label? That’s the aim. Our second 12” is a killer release by Intrigue regulars, Break and Survival. As with the night, the label will bring through new artists who I feel are really pushing things forward. Tell us about the first release on the label and how you chose it The debut is ‘Stepdub/Cold Harbour’ by myself and Joe Wills, AKA The Insiders. ‘Stepdub’ was the first track we produced where we were really trying out new things, like a different half-step beat and lots of tense atmospherics. A real dubstep feel to it, hence the name. What treats have you got lined up for release in 2009? Great tune from Break, called ‘Out of Nowhere’, which is more funked-out and dub-heavy than his usual style. On the flip is Survival, ‘Cross Fire’; a dreamy, progressive roller with D-Bridge and Marcus Intalex. The third release is the long-awaited ‘Meltdown’ with Ayah on vocals, which was originally scheduled for Metalheadz. On the back is the darker ‘Cold Steel’. Plus tunes to come from Random Movement, Eveson and a new artist called Squash. I’m also looking into commissioning some high-profile remixes.

Who would you most like to work with? That’s a tough one. We’re going in the studio with Break soon, and we plan to work with Lynx and Kemo. I’d love to work with Calibre and D-Bridge at some point too. 5 records that are tearing the Intrigue dancefloor: 1. Random Movement & Mixmaster Doc - Rattle System 2. The Insiders - Stepdub 3. Vapour - Working with Muppets 4. Calibre - Roundhouse EP 5. The Insiders - Disconnected And the future of Intrigue? Doing the night and label’s already keeping me pretty busy! I aim to release a mix CD at the end of the year, and there are talks with other events around the world, about linking some Intrigue tour nights too. Do you have any exciting gigs lined up for 2009? In a few months we head back to the US on tour: always much fun to be had! We’re playing the Bristol Festival again in September and we might be doing something at Sun & Bass in Sardinia too- definitely one of my favourite festivals! Next Intrigue events: Sat 7th Feb at Motion Ramp Park: Label Launch Party with Ben Westbeech, Jenna G, Krust, D-Bridge, Icicle, Random Movement, The Insiders, Eveson, Kulture, Thinking, Hyetal, MC System, MC Fokus & more. Fri 20th Feb at Dojo Lounge: 6th Birthday with Calibre, Break & Survival, The Insiders & more. See intrigue.org.uk for news, mp3 downloads and club dates. myspace.com/intriguednb Words: Arash Torabi

You like the backpack scene but resist returning to. This isn’t a new release, feel that the heads are too serious and but it’s beautiful, sentimental music that you introspective in their views. If you answered will find yourself cherishing and sharing with yes to the above, then this album is for you. a chosen few. Violins, glockenspiels and On Zion I’s latest they walk that fine line of accordions provide an unlikely but potent current urban hip hop and head nodding remedy to the electronic based world that indie MCs. Much like on the last Kidz In The we find ourselves in today. Bashy.Com (GGI/Rags 2 Riches Records) For those of you that didn’t catch Bashy’s awesome Black Boys, you need to get this to make up for it. If Bashy’s on point flow and ear for a great hook aren’t enough for you then you have to give props to any MC who namedrops Gary Wilmot. Respect is well overdue. Darkroom Ep

Glastonbury-rocking British reggae superstars (featuring Lynval Golding from The Specials on guitar) drop a version album, built around last year’s anthemic single, Highrise. This album is part of an anti-knife and gun campaign, and contributors include Studio One legend Dennis Alcapone and Billy Bragg. The original track is carried by the smooth lyrical chat of Michie One, and many of the versions here keep her vocal intact. Hard-Fi and Roots Manuva collaborator Wrongtom provides a dub version, and label-mate Mungo’s Hi Fi drops a laidback dubstep mix. In addition to the remixes, ‘Do They Ever Wonder’, featuring Banana Clan’s Jimmy Screech is also a definite winner. Arash Torabi

Dirty North

(Polar Reds)

(Urban Scrumping Records)

These guys are WAY too creative and open-minded to be filed alongside the runof-the-mill breakbeat fodder. Bit of the old This EP opens with ‘Darkroom’, a squelchy acid synth, anyone? And before glitchy, haunting, techno-inspired you’ve had a chance to say “What’s your dubstep tune that displays an impressive name and how many are you on?”, you’re production technique and a refreshingly uncompromising attention to detail. Next up listening to a different style altogether. Yes, is ‘Kigelia’, a deep, textural, hypnotic tune, they use the old-school well, but they don’t which despite being quite different from the bleed it dry, and leave room for plenty of first track is again very well put together. other influences. They know how to make These two tunes are accompanied by well the tracks bounce, and there’s enough thought out remixes by Phaeleh and Gyu, variety on ‘Dirty North’ to give it an album following their own releases on this highly feel. of punk fashionistas, which might be why their second album is an unreconstructed, surefire winner. Dealing with singer Jon Curtis’ familiar themes of small-town pride and punk rock salvation, ‘The Wrong Side Of The River’ and the adorably honest ‘I Know It’s OK’ are the kind of simple, personal protest songs that never lose their colour no matter how many times you run them through the wash. Backbone

Spirits Of The Dead Spirits Of The Dead (White Elephant)

Thankfully, some people just can’t let go of the golden age of psychedelic rock’n’roll. Norway’s Spirits Of The Dead, for instance, have embraced the ethereal folk-rock mores of the past, downed a handful of Doors and Zep pills and let their green fingers do the walking. And if you can show me a more authentic slice of early ‘70s psyche-groove than supreme opener ‘White Lady / Black Rave’, I’ll eat my Kaftan. Backbone

The View

Which Bitch? (1965) You have to be a bit thick to fall in love with The View. How else could you tolerate the melancholy-lite of ‘Temptation Dice’ or the schmindie tedium of ‘5 Rebbeccas’? But then, something happens. ‘Glass Smash’ crashes in on a wave of celtic ambience, followed by the string-laden, Tin Pan Alley lilt of ‘Distant Doubloon’ and, suddenly, it feels like The Coral and Gershwin have gatecrashed the party. Expectations are upturned; for a while at least. Hey fan, maybe you’re not so stupid after all. Backbone

Phonemonkey Open Your Ears…

(Bitcrusher Records) Anyone on the search for mind-warping breakcore should look no further than this debut from South West beat eccentric Phonemonkey. The 12 tracks on offer provide a sensory overload of broken drum ‘n’ bass, R ‘n’ B synths, twisted pop and a few spooky atmospherics. The obscenely titled yet deftly produced ‘Monkeyc*nt’ proves the clear highlight, incorporating shards of lo-fi bleeps, million-mile-an-hour beats and a good dose of self-deprecating humour. If Squarepusher did Gameboys, this would be it. The rhythms are fragmentary, the melodies outlandish, but the record successfully pulls in a great deal of coherence and catchiness and as such makes Phonemonkey one to watch for 2009. Amy Mcgill

CLOCKWISE from 12 O‘Clock

Bobby Wotnot

Relaxed ambiance ensues here in the form of ‘Stone Thrower’. It’s a good length too at 3 minutes 40ish. Some very honest vocals drift along nicely over synthetic, downbeat drums. Harmless! Track two pushes disco in a fashion, with familiar synth and drum sounds as on the previous track. ‘Mr Guilt’ is a little harder but still soft as a baby’s bum. All round great pop, disco, downbeat gear! myspace.com/bobbywotnot

Rip Demo – Diversion

The info on the CD here doesn’t seem to coincide with anything on the web but the music is pretty good. Track one sounds like a Mr Scruff demo spliced with a Danny Breaks tune that never made it to the 12”s. Track two sounds like a Mr Scruff demo spliced with a Danny Breaks tune that never made it to the 12”s. Track three sounds like a Mr Scruff demo spliced with a Danny Breaks tune that never made it to the 12”s…

Acid Jam – ‘Ethnic’

Acid Jam are primarily a guitar-focused band, in that they sound like an immature Pink Floyd. Track one noodles along nicely with delay, flange, verb, phaser and everything else on said effects pedal switched on at some point in the 6 minutes 20 seconds the track lasts. audiojelly.com/index.cfm?action=artist.cfm?id=35854

Marianne Dissard

Marianne comes strong here with an 11-track demo of acoustic loveliness. French vocals and some really nice guitar skills make this a STRONG CD. Living in the USA and backing her music up with an enormous tour schedule I fear she doesn’t need any help from me to “make it”… myspace.com/mariannedissard

Freelancers Vs Sleepy

All the way from California, Freelancers Vs Sleepy have some very basic sounding tracks with some tight and audible MCing. With fatter beats and more balls on the melodies and rhythms this demo would be great. I think the MC carries this CD from start to finish and deserves better tracks to rhyme on. myspace.com/freelancersvssleepy If you’re in a band, you’ve recorded your demo and you want some exposure in the best music and lifestyle magazine in the West & Wales, and you think you can handle a bit of constructive criticism or all out praise then send it in to us at 247 Magazine Demo Reviews, Out of Hand Ltd, Hebron House, Sion Road, Bedminster, Bristol, BS3 3BE Alternatively drop us a myspace message with a link to your demos at myspace.com/outofhandmagazine

The Kemistry

A partly heavy drum break and splendidly honest vocals had A Morcheeba vibe here. Nice vox, nice structures and general pleasantness. An MC graces a couple of tracks but tries to fit too much in for me. Also, the band play live and have their own website which is a step up from my usual choices of “demo” CD to review in PR terms. Not bad at all! thekemistry.co.uk

Nicole Kidman is stuck-up Englishwoman Lady Ashely, who crosses the world in 1939 to check up on her husband’s errant behaviour. Discovering he’s been killed and her cattle have been stolen by the nasty beef baron next door (Bryan Brown) the only way to save the family fortune is to drive 1,500 head of cattle to Darwin, across the unforgiving Northern Territory. She engages the help of Hugh Jackman, splendidly virile as The Drover, a brawling man’s man with a chequered romantic past. It’s a fine romp that looks stunning – and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

BADLANDS (15) 15 Feb, Arnolfini, Bristol, 0117 9172300, arnolfini.org.uk Dir: Terence Malick, starring Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen US/1973/94 mins A mesmerising study of a confused rampage of young lovers across the States from legendary director Terence Malick. The film inspired Oliver Stone’s masterpiece Natural Born Killers and was inspired by the real life Starkweather-Fugate killing spree of the 1950s. Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen play the youthful murderers whose homicidal road trip is a metaphor for apathy felt by the youth in 1960’s America. Both turn in the performances of their careers.

Words: John Barker newport.gov.uk Dir: Toa Fraser, starring Peter O’Toole, Jeremy Northam and Sam Neill. 2008/UK/New Zealand/100 mins Peter O’Toole gives a scorching performance as misanthropic curmudgeon, Horatio Fisk, in this wonderfully eccentric comedy-drama. Set in 1904 and based on a novella by the once-popular fantasy writer Lord Dunsany, it’s full of peculiarly English quirks and ticks, with a witty script by Alan Sharp. To relieve the tedium of their regular outings, distanced father and son, Horatio and Henslowe (Jeremy Northam) attend a lecture on the Transmigration of Souls by a visiting Hindu Swami. There they meet Dean Spanley (Sam Neill), with whom Henslowe strikes up a bizarre friendship at dinner, leading to trance-like reminiscences of a highly unexpected former life: that may just hold the key to the family heartbreak that Horatio is trying to keep repressed.

films

Dir: Terry Gilliam, starring: Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro. 1998/US/118mins This is a majestic study of narcotics and journalism that director Terry Gilliam clearly relishes. Drug-fuelled lunacy is at the heart of Hunter S Thompson’s account of his road trip to Nevada to cover a Hells Angels motorcycle race. Let me assure you its a million miles away from today’s professional, clean cut, journalism. To draw the viewer into Thompson’s world he uses the camera like a third person who happens to be hallucinating. He also has fun with distortion effects and trippy background patterns and colours such as wallpapers and carpets. Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro are excellent as the slurring, wasted Raoul Duke and his overweight Samoan lawyer Dr. Gonzo. Certainly a case of the trip being more interesting than the destination.

Hunter S. Thompson and Johnny Depp. 2008/UK/ 120 mins This is an unflinching documentary of the life and times of cult anti-hero Hunter S Thompson in 60s and 70s USA and his suicide in 2005. Hunter S. Thompson is known as a journalist for Sports Illustrated and Rolling Stone with an appetite for reckless living, women and whiskey. This film searches for the real man behind the myth. Using unused-before archived tapes and footage of Thompson, the film incorporates recreations and impressionistic, re-stagings but more importantly lets Thompson’s own work and own voice speak for itself.

LIVE MILK (15) 1 – 5 Feb, The Watershed, Bristol , 0117 927 5100 watershed.co.uk Dir: Gus Van Sant, starring: Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and James Franco. 2008/USA/ 128 mins Acclaimed filmmaker Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Paranoid Park) captures a pivotal moment in the gay movement’s struggle for civil rights with this skilfully and tenderly observed account of the life and work of Harvey Milk. The first openly homosexual man voted into significant U.S. public office in 1977, Milk’s brief but committed career inspired a generation of activists before he was assassinated the following year by a disturbed colleague. The phenomenal cast includes Josh Brolin, Diego Luna and James Franco, but the standout performance comes from Sean Penn whose turn as the charismatic politician glows with passion, humanity and wit. We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918 to the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man’s life can be. This unforgettable tale follows a forbidden friendship that forms between Bruno, the son of a Nazi commandant, and Samuel, a Jewish boy held captive in a concentration camp.
