Pete Harrison always knew he wanted a career in the creative industries, which lead him to study a BSc in MediaLab Arts at Plymouth University. “I began posting on a few community and social sites and networking with other designers and illustrators. I was featured in a few magazines and books and exposure started to grow. I took a fulltime job in London working at an agency, and while I was here I set up a clothing label as a hobby, I called this Funkrush, and commissioned a bunch of friends to do some designs for me,” says Pete, who now lives in Torbay and has seen Funkrush develop very quickly – the label now showcases designs by some of today’s top illustrators and designers as well as being stocked in shops all over the UK and Europe. Having left London behind and come back to the South West to pursue a freelance career Pete has a plethora of exciting projects on the go. Against all odds 247’s Editor, Rachael, meets Plymouth music producer, Bizniz Beats, to talk about his somewhat unexpected newly signed artist; local Big Issue seller and rapper, Dave Campion.

magazine

www.247magazine.co.uk

Sometimes all you need is someone to believe in you. Plymouth Big Issue seller and talented rapper Dave Campion, aka ‘Will Rap4Cash’, struck it lucky when he met up with local producer Bizniz Beats. Studio time lead to signing, then a single, now an albulm… We find out how it all happened and what’s next.

How did you discover Dave Campion aka ‘Will Rap4Cash’? I was browsing through YouTube, looking for local singers, and came across a video of Dave singing outside Marks And Spencer, selling The Big Issue. Half way through the video he shouts to a member of the public “Do you know Bizniz Beatz?” I thought I’d heard wrong, but after playing it back I knew he’d asked after me. I then went to meet him outside Marks and Spencer and asked him about his music and if he’d be interested in coming to the studio, the rest is history.

You’ve already released a single ‘Foundations’, which is available on iTunes, which also features Plymouth singer Stacey Cann, what’s the reaction been like? Amazing. We were recently interviewed on Radio Plymouth and they had the first exclusive radio play. Since then it has been played on Heart FM. I find out the sales for the single over the next few weeks, I’m not sure what to expect as we put little promo into it but I see on iTunes its had a few 5* ratings. A music video will be on Youtube in October for the track.

How long did it take for you to decide to sign him to your label? Just over a month. We made the single in just under two weeks. Dave then appeared on ITV West Country News, when this happened I knew people were interested in his story.

We’re guessing the Big Issue has been pretty supportive? Yes, they featured Dave in the magazine last month to promote the single, which was very helpful and I’m currently aiming to get him on the front cover nearer the album release. That will be a huge achievement for us, especially as Dave has always said he wanted to be on the cover.

The album you are working on is all about Dave’s life story – has it changed your view on homelessness and how do you think it will effect people generally when it’s released? My views have changed on the homeless since meeting Dave. Being able to help him advance his music and for him to possibly gain a career in music, there is no better feeling for me. He is one of the nicest guys I have ever met and also one of the most focused; he knows what direction he wants to go in, unlike a lot of people I work with in the studio. I hope it changes the way people think about the homeless, and after hearing some of the stories I was touched. Are you producing the whole album and stumping up the cash for it? Yes, I will be producing and recording the whole album. We are looking for local businesses to help fund the project. In return we will have logos on our album and campaign posters. The funding will cover costs such as CD printing, mastering costs and promotion.

Is it true that even though he’s still homeless, Dave is planning to give a percentage of his profits to charity? It is true. We will be giving 20% of the album profits and 50% of the single to The Big Issue. I see Dave as the main face in Plymouth for selling the Big Issue, he is known by everybody. Even when I’m stood with him having a chat people are constantly saying hello. He is happy to give back to the charity which has helped him get back on his feet. It would make a truly inspirational Number 1, wouldn’t it? Getting to Number 1 would be life changing for Dave and even for myself. And with sales figures in these modern times, it’s not impossible. It would send a positive message across the UK and make people more aware of the charity. Were going to start a campaign nearer the album release to get the album into the Top 40 chart, it will only be £5 to purchase and 20% of that will go to charity.

Where do you hope for it to be sold? Pete at Genepool Records releases all my work digitally so will be in online stores like iTunes, Amazon, Play etc. We are also approaching local Tescos, Asda, Hmv and independent music stores. What about writing the songs – who is taking care of that? I will be producing each track, so writing the music and Dave writes all his own lyrics. We connect well as a team and feel doing it all ourselves will have a positive outcome. There will be one or two features on the album aswell, maybe artists from my label.

Become a fan on Facebook - type in ‘Will Rap4Cash’ and ‘Bizniz Beats’. Find out more at www. biznizbeatz.com and get yourself the single from iTunes at http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/ foundations-feat.-stacey-cann/id446431264

Cosmo Jarvis Devon-based Cosmo Jarvis has been causing waves on YouTube, with the video for his recent single; Gay Pirates. This month he’s on a major national tour, and he’ll be sharing his quirky & inventive sounds with Exeter, Ivybridge and Bristol audiences. 247’s Arash Torabi caught up with him. The contrast in Gay Pirates is that with its upbeat folk-punk sound, its rowdy/ladsy sing-along number, and yet both its subject matter and title are openly gay. Cosmo started his recording career two years ago, on Wall ofSound Records, the label that previously shot big beat superstars such as The Wiseguys and Propellerheads into the mainstream. But there were problems. “They were shit”, said Cosmo, “They did absolutely nothing with my music, and then they tried to charge me for my own album. The thing that kept me going was positive comments, but that’s not enough to get you heard.” As Cosmo had already established his own 25th Frame Productions for his first album, the logical step was to use it to put out his new album; Is the World Strange or Am I Strange? “I’m in charge of all my own media, and I have a plugger. I get a buzz from the reactions on Facebook, but you have to get real and know that it’s only a small part of getting you out there. If I had a famous dad, or if I paid someone loads of money, I could get out there properly.” However, there are people in very high places who have helped to get Cosmo noticed. Brian Eno, the iconic musician and producer (and former member of Roxy Music), said that Cosmo is “A very interesting example of a new kind of person; a new kind of artist”, on BBC6 Music. “It felt good to have that kind of feedback from someone who knows their shit”, said Cosmo, “It makes you know you’re doing something right. I’ve had some personal attacks from NME. I prefer good

constructive criticism. The feel for the new album has been good so far, but obviously no consumer comments until it comes out” Also, thanks to a recent Twitter post from Stephen Fry, the video for Cosmo’s Gay Pirates clocked up more than half a million views on Youtube. The videois an important medium to Cosmo, who is also an actor, as well as a singer, multiinstrumentalist and songwriter. “I grew up making short films, and when I got into music, I saw it as an opportunity to make videos”, said Cosmo. “My brother produces the videos, and I know everyone involved - they take it very seriously” And that’s not all on the acting front. The man is about to undertake a national tour, with a second album about to drop, and yet he is also currently busy with postproduction of his latest feature film. “It’s called Naughty Room, and it also features Dave Egan, who played Sebastian in my Gay Pirates video. I’m hoping to get the film out to some festivals, like South By Southwest (SXSW). I’m not expecting too much though: it’s all in the hands of the audiences. They’ll either like it, or I’ll learn from it.” And before we get too carried away with Cosmo’s acting (which includes being on a rap video by Plymouth artist, Sleaze) and making a video for Crazy Arm, there is of course the new album.”There are two versions: one is a single-disc, edited/condensed version, which is more for radio. Then there’s the deluxe version, which comes with a DVD. This will have the full versions of the songs, with brand new cuts of the videos, which are different to the versions on Youtube.”

See Cosmo play at Ivybridge Ivy Live on Sept 10th, Exeter Cavern on Sept 20th and Bristol Fleece on Sept 21st. New album Is the World Strange or Am I Strange? is released on the 26th of this month. See www.cosmojarvis.com. www.247magazine.co.uk

As Brighton Indie kids The Maccabees prepare to play Exeter Phoenix this month, Laura Williams caught up with guitarist and vocalist Felix White, who outright refused to embark upon our battle of the beaches! The band seems to be enjoying a lot of time on the coast this summer, with gigs in Newquay, Exeter and on the Isle of Wight, so what’s the best thing about the British coast?
I spent an evening before one of the gigs on the last tour listening to the second half of ‘Low’ by David Bowie whilst walking around the beach in Portsmouth. It was raining and grey and it was the most accidentally fitting scene to music I’ve ever had with my iPod on. We reckon the South West’s beaches are much nicer than Brighton beach, less pebbly, what do you prefer and why?
Each to their own. I like Brighton beach but it’s not worth fighting about. One of your music videos (Can I Give It) featured the annual cheese rolling event up in Gloucestershire, tell us about that and how it came about…and do you think you’ll ever be able to top that one? We felt like we wanted to document something to make use of a music video in a more interesting way. It came about during a conversation when a friend mentioned it was happening in a couple of weeks. We found James Caddick who did a great job in capturing it. Sadly we were on tour and couldn’t make it ourselves. How did the band choose the name ‘The Maccabees’ & what other names were potentially suggested? Any funny names/stories?
A friend picked it out of the bible. We’re not religious. You headlined the NME Awards Tour last year, how important do you think awards and the accompanying tours are today?
I don’t think we’re best placed to say. When we were young though we went to a few of the NME awards gigs,

turning up on the day and touting tickets. It felt like the only opportunity to see four bands worth seeing at the same time. Obviously that doesn’t go for all the tours but when I was sixteenish I had some memorable nights there. If people the same age still are now then it is relevant and important. Where do you guys stand on the whole illegal downloading debate? Are you happy for people to be getting your music for free or would you like to have more control over this?
Obviously, as for a lot of bands at a similar stage to us, Myspace etc was pretty influential in making it easy for people to hear our music. The internet has also helped make peoples tastes a lot more eclectic and music being available in this way is in part quite empowering for groups. However, I would always buy a record that I love or by a band that I support. I think it’s only right that people do. We don’t want a situation to keep developing where only the most middle ground artists who appeal to people who buy a few records a year from supermarkets are self-sufficient. How is the writing process for the next album coming along and what can we expect from the third record?
The album is being mixed at the moment. It’s a noticeable step on from the last record, we feel they are our best set of songs – we’ve begun playing six or seven of them in the live show. What’s been the highlight of your year so far?
A couple of months ago I bumped into a girl I haven’t seen for ten years. At school I ruined her GCSE art exam by running past her table and sending the glass of water on her table all over her beautiful watercolour. I’ve been meaning to apologise ever since. I’m glad that our chance meeting at HMV let me clear my conscience. Sorry Lucia.

Met ron omy making a beat of their own

The electro-pop quartet has risen to fame through hard work with sell out gigs all over the world and a Mercury Prize nomination. Ahead of their two South West homecoming gigs, in Totnes and Torquay we take a look at their journey so far. More than a decade after the idea for Metronomy was conceived, the subsequent band is now preparing to return to Devon for two homecoming gigs. They have already sold out Dartington Hall near Totnes on September 19, and they are also playing at The Attic in Torquay on September 18, and no doubt this will sell out too. Taking their third album out on tour, Metronomy describe their latest offering as a “belting, unashamed pop album, a gorgeous record full of languid, sunset funk songs” and their music is most definitely pop. But this is not just ordinary pop; this is electro-pop with lashings of cool, some ‘can’t get it out of my head’ melodies, and a hint of eccentricity. Front man and founder Joseph Mount, began making music in 1999 his bedroom in Totnes. From there he moved to Brighton, where he released his debut and started making a name for himself. He enlisted the help of two friends and Metronomy was officially born. When original band member Gabriel Stebbing left to pursue other musical projects, drummer Anna Prior and bassist Gbenga Adelekan were enlisted. Metronomy as we know it emerged. Whilst the first two albums were recorded in Mount’s Totnes bedroom, he felt that it was necessary for the band to record the third, The English Riviera, in a studio. On the band’s website, Joseph writes: “If I stayed recording in my bedroom, it would be like when rappers keep rapping about their street lifestyle when they are obviously a lot better off. Now it would be a real decision for me to keep doing it on a shit computer, with a battered soundcard. For the first time ever, as studios are

cheaper due to the recession, it is in the realms of possibility [for us to record in one].” The English Riviera was recorded in Wapping, east London, and the band soon hope to progress onto sunnier climes and record in Los Angeles. To get a sense of the band’s style, you only need to watch a handful of their music videos. Whilst the videos are all somewhat unusual in their own right, watch a few and you’ll see that there seems to be a certain sense of humour, a hint of tongue in cheek, flowing through the core. The videos are highly stylised and include animated birds and eighties throwback bright colours and clothes. Metronomy are clearly a band with a very strong work ethic. Since April this year they have played 49 gigs, many on consecutive nights and in a new city, state, country, or continent. Over the last decade the gigs have developed as the music has. Joseph has spoken about the lights that the band wear on their tops, originally they came from a pound shop and had to be pushed on and off to create a light show, now the lights are pre-synced and hands-free. The band will surely be pleased with their success to date, and most recently they were announced as being on the Mercury Prize shortlist. And whilst the shortlist is a who’swho of mainstream artists such as Katy B, Tinie Tempah and Adele, there’s always a who’s that? band whose success skyrockets after the nominations are announced. Looking back at past winners, often it’s the underdog that wins, and on Tuesday 6 September, we’ll find out if Metronomy will keep that tradition alive.

To get tickets to see Metronomy play at The Attic / Venue, 13 Torwood Street, Torquay on Sunday 18th September, visit the band’s website: www.metronomy.co.uk or www.ticketweb.co.uk 16 |

Homegrown rock trio The Subways make their big return to the South West this month for a gig at Falmouth’s Princess Pavilion on the eve of their new album’s release. Singer-songwriter Billy Lunn explained to 247’s Rob Sleigh how Money & Celebrity, the band’s third album to date, has taken The Subways back to their roots…

“I really feel like we’ve developed as a band on this record. Hopefully, people will be pleasantly surprised.” In the three years since the release of their Top 20 second album All Or Nothing, Billy and the rest of The Subways have been working hard to recapture the energy from their previous efforts. “At first, I was having trouble writing this album,” admits Billy. “I spent a month or two just picking up my guitar and not being able to write at all and was stressing out about it a little. So I sort of went back in time and started listening to our old demos and picking ideas out of them.” After working in LA with rock producer Butch Vig for All Or Nothing, The Subways have returned home this time around to record their new album with former Blur producer Stephen Street. Billy compares working with these two legendary individuals: “They are very similar in manner, attitude, focus and that kind of thing. We always try and paeone that’s going to make us feel at ease in the studio and they both made us feel like we had an uncle making the record with us or something.” He goes on to confess that working alongside two such renowned figures was a little surreal at times: “I listen back to some of my favourite records like Parklife by Blur and Nirvana’s Nevermind and I sometimes find it quite strange to say to myself: ‘I’ve made records with these guys’.” Billy describes how both producers had an effect on the overall sound of each album: “Butch Vig, being an American living in LA and recording with all these great rock bands, definitely gave All Or Nothing an American inflection. But

Money & Celebrity is very much a product of England, with a classic English producer at the helm.” He also explains that the band’s new album features some of their most sociallyaware material to date: “Money & Celebrity followed suit with the previous albums, which were all three-word titles as well, but I think money and celebrity are the overriding issues that I deal with on the record - the ones that excited me and made me feel like I really had something to say.” The new album is due out on 19 September and The Subways will be celebrating its release with a gig in Falmouth the night before. Billy confirms that the show is one of their most anticipated on the tour: “The first time we played in Falmouth was amazing. We’re really looking forward to heading down again.” However, he goes on to explain how their fondness for the town is owed to more than just the occasional gig: “I go down to Falmouth quite a lot actually, because my girlfriend has friends and family down there. Charlotte [Cooper, bassist] was also married there, so we have a lot of connection with Falmouth.” So what can we expect from the show? “Lots of sweat, lots of smiles, lots of screaming, and, hopefully, a really good time for everybody.” The Subways are: Billy Lunn: Vocals/guitar Charlotte Cooper: Bass/vocals Josh Morgan: Drums

Music Backbone

Kill It Kid

Feet Fall Heavy

(One Little Indian) Bath is the last place you’d expect the swampblues holler and tremelo sex-groove of Kill It Kid to stem from. But, Lordy, it’s true. Like PJ Harvey falling backwards into Jon Spencer’s Vox amp, the band’s wildly percussive and perfectly executed acid-rock noise is the sound of inspired musicians gloriously out of sync with the rest of the country. With two full-blooded singers, one of each gender, and a smorgasbord of intelligent and passion-raddled rootsy refrains, ‘Heart Rested With You’, the rousing ‘Wild And Wasted Waters’ and the extraordinary ‘Pray On Me’ come across like an Alan Lomax collection fed through the spirited craft of The Bad Seeds. In other words, genius.

We Were Promised Jet Packs Apply Within (Fatcat)

The Caledonian mountains have certainly got under We Were Promised Jetpacks’ skin, to the point where this, their second album, attempts to reach those same giddy heights of panoramic grandeur. Opener, ‘Circles & Squares’, is a mammoth, stratospheric opus, bursting with ambition and other-punk ferocity; while the band’s fondness for the leftfield mechanics of Bloc Party are proudly worn on their collective sleeve. Lead single, ‘Medicine’ sees Adam Thompson’s croon take on the form of Roddy Woomble with a refrain that punches you in the gut and offers you the healing balm in one fell swoop. It’s a powerfully intelligent rock record with just enough shards of soaring post-rock to keep the toes twitching.

Ragan / Russo / Islip / Chambers Split LP (Specialist Subject)

Punks playing acoustic guitars. It’s nothing new – Patrick Fitzgerald, Billy Bragg – but these days you can’t move for spittle-flecked Jumbos and country-esque strums. Heading up this four-way split is the inimitable Chuck Ragan, who opts for three plaintive covers including one written by Helen Chambers, who also contributes three songs of her own, sounding like a chirpier, northern Joan Baez with lashings of heart and hope. Sam Russo’s softly crooned gems are reminiscent of Ragan with a warm English lilt, while Jimmy Islip opts for the straight-talking, band-less rock approach. The album ends with the beautiful a cappella harmonies of Chambers’ ‘Speak Your Name’, with folk authenticity intact. Great songs, great people, great album.

Meg Baird

Seasons On Earth

(Wichita) Former Esper, Meg Baird, is what we in the trade call timeless. ‘Seasons On Earth’, her second solo outing, could easily have been written in 1967, sounding as it does, like Sandy Denny at her best and most emotionally uncompromising. With so much modern music forced down our throats on an hourly basis, the discipline required to maintain the nostalgic coo of ‘Stars Climb Up The Vine’ is laudable, with that Laurel Canyon sensibility shimmering from every picked guitar string and reverbed vocal tail. The album ends with ‘Song For Next Summer’: all floating guitars and harp tones that leave you pining for a new summer of love. I’m sure Joni Mitchell will proffer an approving nod from her redwood throne.

Various Artists

MGMT LateNightTales (LateNightTales)

The LateNightTales compilation series celebrates a decade, and MGMT follow Congratulations, last year’s psychedelic triumph, with a laid back selection from their record collection. They like their cult British bands, such as Felt, Television Personalities and Durutti Column, and their choices of tracks are never obvious (not that the featured artists are mainstream in the first place). The tracks drift along and float beautifully into one another. Mark Fry’s For Wild and Dave Bixby’s Drug Song are too hazy for words, and Spacemen 3’s Lord Can You Hear Me is just one of many songs here that’ll make you melt. And they balance it out with Cheree, by the purveyors of electronica, Suicide. Perfect.

Jono McCleery There Is

(Counter Records) Jono McCleery is a complex artist, his style breeds electronica, jazz and folk. His influences include John Coltrane, Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley and Nina Simone, so it figures. The bulk of the material here is moody and mellow, and his voice meanders all over the place, which explains the jazz bit. His own songs are too complicated to make an impression at first, but his cover version of Black’s Wonderful Life should persuade you to go back and try again. At times he creates space with the use of atmospheric sounds, but the bulk of There Is seems to be clever for the sake of it. Unlikely to excite outside of chin-stroking circles.

Fionn Regan

100 Acres of Sycamore (Heavenly)

Album number three from Fionn Regan comes complete with superb orchestration and some of his finest song writing to date. Nu-folk fans who enjoyed Laura Marling’s album, I Speak Because I Can, will get along fine with 100 Acres of Sycamore, especially on songs like Dogwood Blossom and List of Distractions. Gentle guitar picking and subtle strings are the theme here, with a similar vocal delivery to Andrew Bird or Belle & Sebastian. He’s definitely a dreamer, and his lyrics reflect that. But that’s not to say there‘s no substance herequite the opposite. North Star Lover is one of the stand-out tracks. An album which is bound to stand the test of time.

Matt Dibble Daytime TV

(Gongo Records) With a keen ear for 70s pop, and a fascination for his grandparents‘ easy listening record collection, Matt Dibble is clearly not after the “cool points”. The songs have a certain charm, and he shows originality in his approach to writing, but there’s too much gloss and showing off. He has a good ear for melody, and there’s no lack of musical ideas in his arrangements, but the overall effect is just too naff. His press release boasts that he’s a music graduate who has played in a Beach Boys covers band/ wedding band. Anybody who believes that this is the way to sell yourself as an artist, seriously needs to get out more.

Laura Williams

Grouplove

Never Trust A Happy Song (Atlantic)

I reviewed the Grouplove EP a few months back and it was love at first sound. I’ve since seen them play live twice and I’ve been gagging for this debut album ever since. Here, they’ve complimented my old favourites (if a few months constitutes old) like Colours, Naked Kids and Love Will Save Your Soul with an eclectic picnic basket of musical gems. The energy which oozes from the troupe in a live setting is just as evident here on the album. Plenty of clapping, big wailsome vocals and catchy guitars riffs. Think White Stripes/Arcade Fire/Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Well worth checking out their videos on Youtube too. They’re mini films in their own right and are truly awesome.

Peggy Sue Acrobats

(Wichita) It’s been a while since the UK produced a girl heavy group with the talent and credibility to challenge the boys when it comes to brooding guitars and haunting vocals. But here we have some real contenders. Peggy Sue play the type of music which stops you dead in your tracks. A heavy kinda cool, with an underlying intelligence. Rosa Slade and Katy Beth Young take it in turns to seduce you with their spellbinding vocals, while the stark drums provide a subtle backbone to the outfit. You can hear John Parish’s influence on this, their second album. The PJ Harvey collaborator certainly knows what he’s doing and has worked his magic on Acrobats.

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks Mirror Traffic

(Domino) He’s a stalwart of the lo-fi music scene, having been around for longer than I can remember with his legendary band Pavement, yet here Stephen Malkmus sounds as fresh and relevant as his teenage counterparts. Flanked by the Jicks, his melodic indie is just as suited to a lazy afternoon as it is to a pre-party booze up in a dark room. If I didn’t know better, I’d say he was serenading the Westcountry groups he influences (here’s looking at you Dutch Husband and Zaardvark) though it’s obviously the other way round. His song titles are interesting to say the least too, with the likes of Spazz and Jumblegloss hiding among the more obvious titles, such as Forever 28.

Songs To Save A Life

(Samaritans charity CD) When I first saw this CD, I dismissed it as some commercial compilation monstrosity for the generation of bland music lovers who buy whatever crap comes on during the adverts between X Factor. The name conjours up that dull song by The Fray and it features the Radio 2 friendly tones of James Morrison and co. However, this is more like the Help charity compilations, with some beautiful wee covers – the best of which is Ellis-Bextor doing Arcade Fire’s ‘Rebellion (Lies)’ which harks back to her brilliant days in 90s indie group theaudience. Granted, some of the songs are pretty cheesy choices (You’ve Got A Friend etc) but what do you expect on an album titled ‘Songs to Save A Life’.

Music Aldo Vanucci

Wretch 32

Black and White

(Ministry of Sound) Wretch 32 has established himself firmly as someone who can keep a foot in two markets, grime and pop. Nowadays it’s rare that JSR, previously known as the crunk king of the South West, co-signs an artist, let alone a UK one, so you know that Wretch 32 must have something extra. At first I wasn’t convinced as he copies Major Lazer and then re-does Fools Gold, yet his flow wins you over. The album is made up of a number of collaborations – including Ed Sheeran, Delilah, Example and Chipmunk. And the beats are exactly as they should be, walking a fine line between mainstream and cool. Tinie Tempah better watch his back.

Rain

Running For My Freedom (Life N Times Productions)

In 1997 on SWV’s ‘Someone’, Diddy said “don’t speak about it, be about it” and whilst it loses some weight because he probably paid a ghost-writer to FedEx it to him, it has stayed with me. It’s relevant here as this is a UK MC with his hustle firmly in place, and for that he should be applauded and supported. But is that enough? Does it stand up to judgment from your peers? With tight flows over quality beats, well chosen samples and nice punchy kicks this is damn fine. It won’t appeal to the jiggy massive, it won’t have booty shaking wenches on MTV but it is quality hip hop, like hip hop used to be.

Toddla T

Watch Me Dance

(Ninja Tune) A few years back I DJ’d for the Wall of Balls boys up in Sheffield, they had local MCs at their nights (as well as South West two bit DJs) and they kept raving about this local lad Toddla T. And here he is, killing it. A rare producer who has maintained his credibility whilst having the ability to make crossover bangers like Take it Back. If you are new to the T man, think someone whose education is dub sounds and killer reggae but who puts out forward thinking tunes as well as awesome digital ragga tunes. This album needs constant rewinds and if we ever get a summer could well be the soundtrack to many.

Lostribe Sofia

(CFO Recordings) It’s a sign of the times when a hip hop artist comes up through computer game music rather than either the mixtape or battle scenes. Does that take anything away from the artist or is that just this old head being scratched wondering what the kids will do next. In truth all that matters is what they sound like, it doesn’t matter whether they’ve paid their dues to the original elements or whether they rap over youtube videos and record them on their iphones. Truth is these guys rock, nice scuzzy electronic sounds with punchy beats, even have a track that sounds like mid career de la soul, and their collabos are well chosen too, Talib Kweli, Casual and Gift of the Gab amongst others. If you liked Chiddy Bang and used to check your older siblings hip hop music this might well be just the thing for you.

Louk

Samuel L Session

Broken Squares (Secret Cinema Mix) (Praxxiz) Regular readers will know that I’m quite a techno fan and have been for the past decade or so, and where possible it’s always nice to drop something that’s hugely techno influenced and rocks the place. That is exactly what you get here with this remix for Dr Motte’s Praxxiz label by Holland’s Secret Cinema. This has it all, mindblowing percussion, twisted filtered synth work and just the whole production has tinges of being a modern day take on a Dave Clarke track. This is seriously one for the bigger floors and has worked for me early on in my sets when pitched up! Check it out.

DJ Thera + Geck-O

Help Help (Theracords) After recently smashing the place at Ground Zero festival in Holland, and countless bookings in and around the UK, Holland’s Thera and Geck-O prove they are yet again men to watch, with this offering, ‘Help Help’. This recently did the damage at Hindsight in Torquay where brutalistic, gabber influenced percussion is dropped over a hard trance background amidst hugely effected Dalek-esque vocals, before a haunting synth riff comes in to really twist up some heads! As usual with this duo, they come up with hard hitting dancefloor friendly material which certainly takes no prisoners. You know what you’re getting with these guys. And you should go get it.

Nick The Kid

Enigma (Andrea Montorsi Mix) (Hindsight) South West legend and Hindsight’s main man Nick The Kid struck an anthem with his original mix of Enigma when it came out a couple years ago, with countless radio one plays and huge DJ Support. However there are a new set of remixes to come, and Italian stallion Andrea Montorsi comes up the goods with a Kamui styled remake that has such a huge reaction when dropped. I recently opened with this at Premonition and it was one of the best tracks of the set, driving, bass heavy synth works and lots of quirky, minimal techno influenced percussion are the order of the day with a fierce kick and a gorgeous breakdown, seriously recommended!

Marc Simz Stealth (Hindsight)

There seems to be an influx of quality productions coming from Holland this month, and this is a man who I have been bigging up for quite some time. He has recently played in the UK as well and hopefully we will see him playing down in the South West before the year is out. After first catching my attention with ‘Forbidden City’, Marc has been championing his energetic trance sound to new heights and stealth is exactly what we’ve come to expect from him, with highly detailed, immaculate production and a killer riff, this has caused a massive impact on the dancefloor in the earlier sets I have played.

Backbone

Cutnancy

www.cutnancy.co.uk With a strum and a wink to all kinds of whimsical indie-pop tunesmiths whose names escape me, Bristol quintet, Cutnancy, keep things crisp, whiny and reflective but then go and spoil it with ridiculous screamo bolt-ons that are clearly not designed for their testosterone-deficient larynxes. These three songs may not have you cavorting through your town centre with semi-naked abandon but they will reflect your rainy-day-at-sunset-melancholy to the point where you may seek solace in such emotional outpourings. The problem with trying to please everybody all at once is that you make too many compromises along the way and end up sounding like a band trying just that little bit too hard.

The Coffin Collectors

www.myspace.com/ thecoffincollectors From the name alone, I assumed that this Exeter ensemble would be ploughing some kind of gothic and bequiffed rockabilly stomp. And I was right. Kaligula Van Goth takes his merry band of polecats to all the expected ‘50s-influenced kitsch corners, paying homage to The Cramps (‘Night Train’), Dion & The Belmonts (‘Red Hair’) and Link Wray (‘Ride To The East’). Van Goth’s voice is a curious one – not quite dripping with auto-erotic intent but still effective in its half-baked attempts to be so; with some cute graveyard quips and quirks littered throughout. One suspects that there is no band, and that this is just Van Goth’s vanity project. Either way, sweet moves.

The Parade

www.myspace.com/theparadeglobal Exmouth/Exeter-based boys, The Parade, have asked us – seeing as they entered the UK Live and Unsigned competition, and were the only Exeter band who got through to the regional finals, and are the only band in the Exeter area to do so, and are quietly confident that they’ll do well, and are putting the finishing touches to their debut album, ‘Echo At The Carnival’, which is being produced by Phil Johnstone who has worked alongside Led Zeppelin – whether we would like to do an article on them and follow their progress. No, we wouldn’t. Why not? Because they sound like a vaudeville Paolo Nutini jamming with The Hoosiers and they’re way too jolly. Vamoosh!

Pineapple

www.myspace.com/pineappleuk Plymouth veterans, Pineapple, dish out another half-dozen grizzly ditties rooted in old school punk sensibilities. For the most part it’s pretty predictable, heads-down, arms-a’flailing fare but ‘Safe House’ turns on the cerebral charm with an interesting mulch of Killing Joke-esque edginess and menacing undercurrents. There’s even, what seems to be, layered clarinets in there, pushing the song further into the post-punk abyss. Business is resumed with ‘Tourettes’ but those clarinets are still parping about in the background. Or is it trumpets? I’m confused but I like it. The techno remix is faintly ridiculous but you get the feeling that they’re well aware of this. A straight-laced Britpunk band with off-kilter afterthoughts. You could do worse magazine | 33

Eat a lot, for less! FALMOUTH 5 Degrees West Bar & Grill

7 Grove Place, Falmouth, TR11-4AU / 01326 311288 www.5degreesfalmouth.co.uk

At 5 Degrees West in Falmouth, just across the road from Discovery Quay, Monday night is the night you need to remember for a cheap feed. The deal is ‘555’: Five specials, from five O’clock, for five quid each. Winner. Best of all you won’t get sick of them quickly because the menu changes every week. I was enticed by the sizzling skillet of spicy leeks, courgettes, fennel, haloumi and grapes served with salad and bread and butter, but it had sold out. I was almost swayed by the mushroom and blue cheese fusilli, but in the end went for potato skins filled with chilli and topped with cheddar cheese. Call it ‘pub grub’, call it ‘comfort food’, call all of your friends and tell them about it. Presentation was simple, food was tasty, and together with good company and half a pint of Sharp’s Special, you really can’t complain! 5 Degrees has a welcoming, bustling atmosphere and loads of tables, inside or outside in one of the best beer gardens in town. Food is served until 9.30pm. Hannah Giles

The relaxing café doesn’t offer huge hot meals, but instead provides options for a cheap and delicious lunch. The menu is awash with low-priced luxuries: bagels, create-yourown salads, hummus and sandwiches with a large choice of tasty fillings. I’m a sucker for a good bagel and there’s nothing more satisfying than an indulgent filling of smoked salmon and cream cheese, costing £3.95. If you think that might still be stretching it too far you can bag a cracking tuna mayo, red onion and salad sandwich for £2.80 on farmhouse white, or GI seeded bread if you want to give your body a healthy boost. Tilly Mint Bakery is quite rightly known for its gorgeous cakes, so it’s no surprise that they have some delightful cupcakes on offer. The quaint establishment cries out Kath Kidson-esque design, with its floral bunting and array of intricately crafted cakes on show. Tilly Mint Bakery is a must for all bargain hunters. Film TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY (TBC)

MUST

SEE

Released: 16 September Dir: Tomas Alfredson Starring: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Ralph Fiennes 2011/UK/TBC This remake of the classic Alec Guinness TV series sees Gary Oldman take-up the role of George Smiley despite retiring from the ranks of M16, he is reactivated to search for a rogue Soviet spy within the British intelligence community. The plot is full of red-herrings, twists, and turns and is the perfect vehicle for director Alfredson who directed the chilling Scandinavian thriller Let the Right One In. This classic slice of cold-war paranoia is his first English language film and should hopefully make a silky smooth transition from small to big screen. The cast includes red-hot British talent Colin Firth and Ralph Fiennes, and Gary Oldman (whisper it quietly) could be on Oscar worthy form. This should be an intelligent and thrilling nights entertainment.

The Best of the Rest.... ABDUCTION (TBC)

KILL LIST (18)

TROLL HUNTER (15)

Released: 28 September Dir: John Singleton Starring: Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins and Alfred Molina 2011/US/TBC Ooooh! Chase, revenge, thriller starring teenage dream Taylor Lautner. An interesting story sees Taylor find a photo of himself on a missing person’s website, which leads him on an obsessive hunt for the truth.

Released: 2 September Dir: Ben Wheatley Starring: Neil Maskell, MyAnna Buring and Harry Simpson 2011/US/95 min Jay (Neil Maskell) is a former soldier struggling though a broken, marriage, who hooks up with his army buddy to do some contract killing in an attempt to ease his ailing finances. What follows is part bro-mance and part horror film: guaranteed to keep audiences intrigued with it’s twisty plot.

Released: 9 September Dir: André Øvredal Starring: Otto Jespersen, Robert Stoltenberg and Knut Nærum 2010/Norway/90 min This bonkers monster movie is similar to Cloverfield and set in Norway. The story sees a trio of media students from a local college trying to find and interview an elusive bear poacher. But it turns that he isn’t hunting for bears, he’s after trolls. The film features impressive effects and a nice streak of black comedy.

MELANCHOLIA (15)

WARRIOR (TBC)

Released: 30 September Dir: Lars von Trier Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland 2011/US/136 min Fresh from the intense experience of Antichrist, Danish helmer Lars von Trier has churned out another weirdly surreal tale. This time he is tackling the end of the world thanks to a giant planet crushing earth. He sets his film in the weeks leading up to the event dealing with Kirsten Dunst’s impending wedding. Expect plenty of philosophical imagery and a lack of any recognisable story.

Released: 23 September Dir: Gavin O’Connor Starring: Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte and Joel Edgerton 2011/US/TBC The world of mixed martial arts finds its way onto the big screen with a story very similar to Oscar winning The Fighter. In this Rocky-style sports film Tom Hardy plays a MMA fighter who is trained by his alcoholic father - Nick Nolte. The stress placed upon his family is multiplied when he enters a tournament that sees him have to fight his brother. Nothing like a bit a sibling rivalry.

FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS (15 Released: 9 September Dir: Will Gluck Starring: Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake and Patricia Clarkson 2011/US/109 min This interesting starring role for Justin Timberlake sees him develop his friendship with Mila Kunis by adding casual sex into the mix. A bonanza of ‘booty calls’ takes a turn for the more serious when they start falling in love with each over. This should be a nice vehicle for the former N-Sync man and is one of the few romantic comedies that tries something a bit different.

Now in its fifth year, 2000 Trees Festival continues to shine like an energy-saving beacon in a dark sea of corporate-sponsored mediocrity (Cheltenham, 14-16th July). With the stagnant pond firmly out of bounds, and with the addition of a new rock-centric stage, the range of choices has opened out to include the gnarly, contrary likes of KONG and their surreal post-punk sensibilities, alongside the hardcore punch of YOUR DEMISE, the Sabbath-suckling WITCHSORROW and the acid blues majesty of KILL IT KID. This doesn’t feel like home territory for DANNY & THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD but that didn’t stop them from being this reviewer’s highlight, combining a love of Springsteen and The E-Street Band with an easy, breezy rock’n’roll charm. Belfast upstarts, AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR, are becoming something of a mainstay at 2000 Trees, their maniacal mélange of darting guitars and sonic suspense reaching new heights of instrumental expediency. On the main stage, THE KING BLUES – now featuring homegals, Kat Marsh and Josie Newton – were clearly in celebratory mode, despite an impassioned anti-EDL rant; evidently relieved that they have survived the trials and tribulations of the past two years and come through relatively unscathed. And thank goodness for STRAIGHT LINES who managed to provoke an impressive conga train for their spiky poppunk vignettes. Elsewhere, JIM LOCKEY & THE SOLEMN SUN did the Cheltenham indie-folk shuffle to good effect, TALL SHIPS dazzled us with technoid pop soundscapes, THE TWILIGHT SAD almost lived up to the melancholic thrum of their records, FIGHTING FICTION rocked their own particular Casbah, and FRIGHTENED RABBIT turned in a bit of a damp squib, although their adoring fans clearly disagreed. No matter. It’s still the best non-corporate fest in the West, and beyond. There are times when watching Vince Lee’s guitar craft where you think that this is, quite possibly, the best thing you’ve ever seen in your life. And when he’s at the helm of the jivetastic whirlwind of rhythm and blues that is THE WILDCARDS it’s even more mind-blowing (Annabels, Plymouth, 22nd July). But it’s not just the guitar. It’s the voice, the style and, the other musicians, all forging the most authentic sharp-suited swingalong swagger this side of Brian Setzer’s lopsided quiff. Livestock Festival isn’t really a festival; it’s a private party hosted by the New Devon Army to which everyone’s invited (Sidmouth, 23rd July). And once you get past the macabre hog roast and the desperate lack of toilet cubicles, there was a modicum of fun to be had. So while we were playing games of mini-pool and failing to unicycle, THE BREAKS COLLECTIVE were busy filling the inevitable, jazz-funk-with-whiterappers niche. Far more thrilling were SUPENIK, a band who combined the silky riffola of Fu Manchu with ‘60s garage stomp to South Devon’s delight. HOWLING LORD sounded so much like The Band it was hard not to imagine Bob Dylan sauntering on stage at any given moment, but they still boasted a handful of decent refrains. Daft Punk with a live rhythm section? Pretty much. MILLION WAY certainly played up to their strengths with house-inspired synths and a meaty beat manifesto. Good work, NDA. Punk’s not dead but THE CASUALTIES come pretty close (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 25th July). Their dyed-in-the-wool brand of early ‘80s Britpunk is so archaic you can’t help but wonder if they have developmental issues. Although it was quite amusing to watch singer Jorge Herrera’s skyward spikes gradually descend to a sweaty scarecrow droop. London trio, MORAL DILEMMA, at least had the courtesy to sound thoroughly pissed off with lashings of wretchedness; while RASH DECISION’s hirsute hardcore blast provided more than able support even if they do look like backyard wrestlers. See-ya bye.

Relentless Boardmasters Festival Rocks!

This year’s Boardmasters Festival celebrated thirty years of surfing in Newquay in style: an action packed week of pro surfing comps at Fistral, and two days of music at the cliff-top site of Watergate Bay. Over 15,000 people partied hard all weekend with performances from the legendary Fat Boy Slim, Bombay Bicycle Club, Klaxons, Eliza Doolittle, Willy Mason, Ben Howard, Lethal Bizzle, Zane Lowe, DJ Yoda, Breakage, Qemists and Gentlemen’s Dub Club and more. We were there with our 247 signing tent – big shout out to everyone who came to say hi and grab some autographs!. Photos: FOTO + Photography Agency
