SURROUNDED by all the trimmings of a traditional roast, about 90 people enjoyed yesterday’s Salvation Army Mildura Christmas Day lunch. About 15 volunteers spent the morning preparing the Fourteenth Street citadel to ensure those who faced spending Christmas alone, or were unable to prepare a lunch, did not miss out. Salvation Army Mildura’s Major Graham Moyle said the day was special for everyone involved and helped spread the festive joy. “We’ve got our regulars who have been coming for quite a few years now, including people who would face being on their

own or do not have the capacity to put on a Christmas Day lunch,” Mr Moyle said. Also in the fold were Mildura’s passing population – backpackers and travellers looking for somewhere to enjoy Christmas festivities. On the menu was a hot lunch of two types of roast meats, roast vegetables such as potatoes and pumpkin, and desserts including pavlova, fruit, ice cream and plum pudding. “We have all the crackers on the table, lollies and drinks – it’s no different to anyone else’s Christmas lunch if they were able to prepare it themselves,” Mr Moyle said. Lunch caterer Alan Lay, of Lay’s Mobile Chef catering service, began preparing food at 5.30am yesterday.

Mildura Partly cloudy

Seven legs of lamb, six legs of pork, 6kg of carrots, 10kg of cauliflower, 260 potatoes, 132 bread rolls, 30 plum puddings and 40 pavlovas were sliced, chopped, peeled and cooked beforehand. Each year volunteers give up their morning so the citadel can host the lunch. “We never have a problem with getting volunteers,” Mr Moyle said. The lunchers were entertained by Salvation Army member and musician Don Mayne, who each year gets the crowd singing along to Christmas carols and contemporary songs. Afterwards, lunch guests bid farewell, leaving the volunteers to begin the clean-up about 2pm.

Close friends Yvonne Kline and Irene Crouch, both of Mildura, have lunch plated up by caterer Alan Lay.

MERBEIN’S mosaic cluster box art installation is now complete. More than 20 community members worked on the project over the past eight weeks before the officially opening last week. The cluster boxes around Merbein have been installed as part of the Sunraysia Modernisation Project and assist to deliver water to rural customers around the Merbein district. The large concrete structure has now been transformed with the mosaic art pieces, which were developed by local artists and community members. “We are extremely pleased with the end result of the beautiful pieces of art, which can now be enjoyed for many years to come,” Lower Murray Water (LMW) chair John Tesoriero said. LMW collaborated with Mark Haynes, chair of Cultivator Inc and project director. “It has been a real privilege to work with the Merbein community on the first stage of this cluster box project,” Mr Haynes said. “From the ideas workshop, through

Member for Mallee Andrew Broad said he was proud to unveil the new art instillation that he said was an important way of linking the region’s past with its future. “While the Sunraysia Modernisation Project is all about innovation and the future of horticulture in this region, it’s always important to remember the vision and effort of the people who set the foundations for our prosperity,” he said. “I am proud to be unveiling this amazing artwork which celebrates our region’s history through mosaic art, beautifully capturing the stories of some of our original settlers.”

Family spreads cheer By Allan Murphy amurphy@sunraysiadaily.com.au

CHRISTMAS Day was a family affair for Fiona McGlashan and husband Robert. They spent it with children Nathan, 28, and Tera, 15 – giving to others instead of themselves. The foursome joined about 20 other volunteers from all walks of life to help serve up this year’s Sunassist luncheon at the Mildura Bowls Club – a new venue chosen to cater for the ever-expanding number of the support service’s clientele. The crowd swelled from 45 last year to about 80 yesterday, ensuring more volunteer hands were needed to make light work of the day. The McGlashan family has spent the past few years giving their time so that others might get a little more enjoyment on Christmas Day. Mrs McGlashan said there was just as much enjoyment in putting a smile on other people’s faces as

on Christmas Day is just lovely.” The family had little time to celebrate Christmas yesterday morning, heading off to the bowls club about 10am to help get things prepared.

“We seat people when they arrive and have a chat to them, serve them up lunch and get them drinks and then at the end everyone got a present, so we do a bit of everything,” she said. “When we actually get time to sit down and talk to Sunassist clients they are just amazing ... they are so funny. “People don’t seem to give like they used to – they can be selfabsorbed in their own situation and forget about other people – but all the Sunassist volunteers are the most amazing people that you will ever meet.” Yesterday it was soup, prawn cocktails, roast meat, vegetables and salad for lunch with pudding, trifle and pavlova also on the menu for dessert. Mrs McGlashan said her family would treat themselves on Christmas Day after the cleanup at the bowls club had finished late afternoon. “We’ll celebrate the occasion on Christmas night with dinner because we’re busy throughout the day,” she said.

Shoppers make final gift dash

Teamwork gets grants

SUNRAYSIA businesses returned a last-minute retail boom as an estimated one in 10 shoppers scoured shelves to pick up the last of their presents for loved ones on Saturday. And the shopping frenzy is expected to return today as residents make the most of Boxing Day sales. Parking was at a premium in the Mildura CBD and Mildura Central and supermarkets called in additional staff to cater for the bumper turnout. Many got in early ahead of the heat of the day, which remained above 30C much of the afternoon. The Australian Retail Council said because Christmas Eve fell on a Saturday this year, shoppers took advantage of the extra day off work before Christmas to finish off gift shopping and to buy food for Christmas. Consumers are now expected to turn their attention to bargains as retailers prepare for the busy Boxing Day and January sales periods. Sales today are anticipated to exceed the Christmas Eve rush with many using gift cards to make use of Boxing Day sales. Retail trade today has been forecast to increase on 2015 in every state and territory, however 2016 is the second year in a two-year trial period for widespread Boxing Day Michelle and Nathan Gebhart of Mildura shopped for last minute gifts with niece Carly Lamprell, 9, and trade in NSW. – Allan Murphy daughter Alysha.

MEMBER for Mildura Peter Crisp says the activation of the community recovery fund and recovery grants for Victorian the affected primary producers by the November 11 storm was the result of a team effort. Recovery grants of up to $25,000, and a community recovery fund of $120,000 will be provided through the jointly funded commonwealth-state Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements. Mr Crisp said the funding was recognition of the magnitude of the disaster. “I’d like to recognise the hard work done by so many people to get this up – the industry groups and the way they were able to put the estimates of the disaster which were very accurate – and the council,” he said. “It’s marvellous what we can do when we all work together.” However, Mr Crisp said there was more to be done on the NSW side of Sunraysia. “NSW is a difficult one for us because it’s NSW’s call, but it has a big impact on Mildura, so it makes it a complicated situation,” he said. Victorian Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford said the recovery grants were being made available to eligible primary producers in the Mildura Rural City Council region. “The impact of this storm event has been significant, with damage to the farming sector estimated to be between $77.6 million and $156.8 million,” Mr Pulford said.

JANUARY 6: The Sunraysia Football and Netball League appeared to have scuttled any chance of former AFL star Nick Stevens either coaching or playing at the Red Cliffs Tigers until criminal appeal proceedings have been finalised mid-season. The former mid-fielder, who played for Carlton and Port Adelaide, was awaiting an appeal against conviction and sentence after he was found guilty by a magistrate of assault and making threats to kill and intentionally causing injury to his ex-partner. The coaching appointment at Red Cliffs, announced in late November 2015, raised almost immediate ire from those both within and outside

JANUARY 20: A proposed solar farm south of Robinvale, which was shortlisted for a share in $100 million by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, was said to possibly increase sustainability and bring jobs to the northern Mallee. Construction on Bannerton Solar Project 1 was due to start this year and was selected by ARENA to progress beyond expression of interest stage for its large-scale solar photo-voltaic funding round. The proposed 50 megawatt farm would sport 93,000 solar panels, according to Syncoline Energy managing director Phil Galloway. JANUARY 7: Last year was Australia’s fifth warmest on record as an El Nino effect dominated the country’s climate, while the World Meteorological Organisation said 2015 was very likely the world’s warmest year on record. Eight of Australia’s warmest years on record have occurred since 2002, with last year’s averaged mean temperature 0.83C above the average between 1961

and 1990. Mildura was the warmest place in Victoria, one of four states to experience a year among the 10 hottest on record.

JANUARY 18: Peak Sunraysia horticulture bodies were urged to do more to oppose a tax hike for backpackers amid concerns it could make it more difficult to find farm workers. Taxation changes announced by the Federal Government in 2015 meant backpackers could have been taxed at a rate of 32.5 cents in

JANUARY 21: Just a couple of years ago, Sunraysia female football players had to travel many kilometres just to play organised sport. At least 62 women have since put their names down to be a part of Sunraysia’s first women’s football league, to kick off this year. Jenny Donnelly, who helped organise the league behind the scenes, hoped the league will eventually expand to eight teams, and compete in inter-league competitions against Broken Hill, with a junior league under way down the track.

2016 – THE YEAR THAT WAS

February FEBRUARY 1: The fight against ice across Sunraysia received a boost with the addition of two more drug and alcohol treatment beds in Mildura. The two beds came after a call for more drug treatment options as the region continues to battle the ongoing alcohol abuse and the scourge of the drug ice. FEBRUARY 16: The hunt for the Valentines Day super winner was under way, after a winning TattLotto ticket was purchased from the Mildura Central outlet. This mystery winner has won a share of $20 million to be divided among the 17 national winners, resulting in $1.176 million each. TattsLotto Mildura Central owner Sue Dawson said it was the 19th winner for her outlet.

FEBRUARY 20: One of the oldest buildings in Mildura’s CBD, with origins dating back to the 19th century, was demolished. A demolition crew completed the removal

of the former Briants Television Centre building on Madden Avenue, with an extension of the Commodore Motel planned to be built in its place.

FEBRUARY 27: Up to seven staff members, consisting of one full-time employee and one part-time employee, were believed to be losing their jobs and offered redundancies with the impending closure of Mildura’s Dick Smith store. Receivers and managers of the collapsed Australian consumer electronics retailer Dick Smith Holdings announced all Australian and New Zealand stores, excluding airport locations, would be closed, following receivership in early January.

FEBRUARY 29: Robinvale twins Ruby and Bethany Hingano celebrated their second official birthday, despite being eight years old, due to being born on a leap year. Both girls said they were looking forward to sharing their birthday cake with their friends at school and were happy to finally be celebrating a proper birthday, but liked birthday parties even if they weren’t held on February 29.

The former Briants Television Centre was demolished in February.

THE Federal Opposition says the Turnbull Government has mislead primary producers during the implementation of the 15 per cent backpacker tax, which comes into effect on January 1 next year. Labor’s Agriculture spokesman Joel Fitzgibbon said backpackers could face a 32.5 per cent tax until the new arrangement comes into effect next year. He said the Coalition should have changed legislation in 2015, to ensure backpackers would not have to face a tax of 32.5 per cent if they chose to declare themselves as non-residents. “They have been misleading people and growers who need backpackers,” he said. “They said they would fix this mess.” Mr Fitzgibbon said the prospect of a 32.5 per cent tax would deter backpackers from coming to Australia to work for the approaching harvest.

“They will have a crisis next year as a result of the debacle and they won’t be able to secure backpackers,” he said. If the 15 per cent backpacker tax hadn’t been passed by the Federal Parliament, the Coalition said working holiday-makers would have faced a 32.5 per cent tax from the first dollar they earned from January 1. Australian residents or backpackers who class themselves as residents of Australia are eligible for a tax free threshold of $18,200. But Federal Member for Mallee Andrew Broad said the taxation system for backpackers had not changed since July 1, when the government deferred implementing the 32.5 per cent tax rate for all working holidaymakers regardless of residency status. He said Mr Fitzgibbon should stop playing politics with the backpacker tax issue. “He does not have the horticultural industry at heart,” Mr Broad said. “He should let it go and have a holiday and stop creating uncertainty within the horticulture industry.”

MILDURA’S Dr Mehdi Sanati pour says GPs will experience an increased workload from February 2018, with codeine to become available prescription only. Dr Sanati pour said the decision by the Therapeutic Goods Administration to remove over-the-counter access to the painkiller and ingredient in cold and flu medications would increase pressure on GP, especially those in rural areas who were already busy. “But I also understand the reason behind it,” he said. “It’s another layer of control for people who overuse codeine products.” Dr Sanati pour said use of codeine medications could cause drowsiness and constipation, as well as long-term side-effects of liver damage and stomach ulcers. “It’s not really an innocent medication,” he said. “Most people use it reasonably and responsible, but some people may unknowingly becoming addicted. It’s in quite a few medications.” Dr Sanati pour said people who used the drug for an extended period could develop and tolerance and dependence upon it. “Hopefully (the restriction) will help reduce the overuse,” he said. – Megan Frankel-Vaughan

A SUPPORT organisation for young Sunraysia mothers will establish a specialist school in the next two years to help the women continue their education. Zoe Support executive director Anne Webster said the organisation now had 70 young mums involved in the service. Ms Webster said Zoe Support’s three case workers struggled to keep up with the workload and the organisation found it difficult to attract the funding it needed to employ more staff. She said the organisation was “overworked and underresourced” and was working with Anglicare Victoria and Melbourne City Mission to establish the independent specialist school. “Becoming a school was never part of our strategic plan, but sustainability is part of the strategic plan,” Ms Webster said, explaining funding to run the school was a way for the service to remain viable. The school will provide VCAL Year 11 and 12 online and with tutors. Ms Webster said the school would provide the flexibility the mothers needed, while also maintaining the social connection Zoe Support had built since it began. It will continue to teach life skills as part of the curriculum. Zoe Support has three centres, which its mums use as bases for study and childcare. A fourth centre is expect-

Teen feeds animals By Sarah Harman sharman@sunraysiadaily.com.au

Invest in your future

Georgie Hopkins, 13, with this years’ donations to Mildura Animal Shelter. they still managed to drop off food and other goods, it puts a bit of faith back in humanity when you see people thinking of others and not just themselves,” Mr Hopkins said. Georgie, a self-confessed animal lover, said at home she had two dogs, two cats, a

rabbit and a bird avery, with many of her pets adopted from the shelter or rescue animals. Mr Hopkins and Georgie dropped off the donations to the Mildura Animal Shelter on Tuesday, a place where she hopes to one day volunteer.

Police make digital radio upgrade POLICE in country areas will switch to digital radios as the Victorian Government replaces outdated and unsafe systems across the state. Minister for Police Lisa Neville and Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino made the announcement last week after signing a seven-year contract with Telstra to upgrade police

and emergency services radio equipment. “After four years of inaction by the former Liberal Government we’ve got on with the job of delivering for country police and ensuring they have the modern resources they need to catch criminals safely and effectively,” Ms Neville said. “The safety of Victorian police is our highest priority

and we’re making sure that the public can’t listen in on police operations and they have the right tools to catch criminals.” The new radio equipment will replace outdated analogue systems with new secure, encrypted digital equipment which provides better voice clarity, coverage and the capability to track the location of devices, and aims to improve

member safety and response times. Work is underway upgrading the radio towers with further work on key base infrastructure in early next year enabling the roll out of the in car and hand held radios from middle of 2017. The government allocated $11.5 million in the 2015/16 Victorian budget to upgrade more than 8000 radios.

CATS and dogs at the Mildura Animal Shelter will not go hungry anytime soon with 13-year-old Georgie Hopkins making it her mission to collect extra food and supplies. After first visiting the shelter four years ago the teenager took it upon herself to ensure the animals had everything they needed. “When I looked around I realised how many animals there were to take care of and how hard it must get,” Georgie said. “It inspired me to try and help out as much as I could and try to make a change in the community by asking for donations on social media.” The community answered her call out each and every year, with this year’s collection marking the second biggest donation hall since she began the drive in 2012. She received everything from tins of dog and cat food, blankets and bags of dry food from individuals and a few local businesses. Her dad Scott said his community-minded daughter had led the campaign herself and was surprised by the generosity of all those who supported her. “Around this time of year when everyone’s money is tied up in gifts for their own family,

Just let the rest of us get on with our begging and pleading

Workable train model exists elsewhere

WHY don’t we build a big tin shed in Antarctica for our terrorists who are caught in Australia. Just drop them off on the nearest iceberg. No need to waste money on heating for them either. Disgusted CHRIS, so let me get this right. Mildura, with a population of 55,000, has to sit on a cramped bus for three hours to Swan Hill, with a population of 10,000, to catch the train to Melbourne? I would hope Swan Hill would see the inequity in this and not stand in the way of Mildura’s right to its own train via Ballarat. ProPublic, Mildura ANDY, you obviously don’t understand that public transport runs at a loss because it is a public service. Every like-service, including Swan Hill’s would run at a loss because it is paid for by the public for the public. We massively subsidise Melbourne’s public transport while missing out on our own service. G-train, Mildura STEVE Tittensor, I’m more a realist. I’d hate to see tens of millions of dollars wasted on a passenger train, used by a minority. I’d be more than happy to join a lobby group that would see the majority benefit. Andy, Mildura THE young woman driving the silver Commodore with the foul mouth, your disgusting display of abuse was witnessed by many small children, shame on you. I hope Santa bypassed you this Christmas. Karma, Mildura POLICE don’t discriminate when it comes to road safety. They saw Santa driving and breath tested him on Eighth Street last Thursday. G, Mildura

I HAVE travelled on the Indian Pacific and the Ghan trains, which are lovely, comfortable trips. The passenger carriages are behind very large freight trains and car carriers – enormously long trains. Perhaps a solution for Mildura could be just a simple version of these trains. We have large freight trains doing the Melbourne to Mildura and return most days. Why wouldn’t it be possible to have perhaps two carriages behind the freight trains, one first class and one economy, on a smaller version than the Ghan and Indian Pacific, perhaps three times a week? Forget all the talk about fast trains, most train travellers prefer sitting back and relaxing, enjoying the scenery and being off the roads. Also, forget about buffet service and its frozen food heated up in a microwave, yuck. Recently we did a trip in Tasmania on a small steam train in the wilderness, which had two carriages – one first class and one economy class. In the first class we had a lovely lady attend to all of us. All the food was pre-prepared, not a microwave in sight, canapes, soup and bread rolls, scones, jam and cream, sandwiches, cakes and slices, and any drinks that you wanted, hot or cold, not served in paper cups, but in cups or mugs and glassware. All very simple, but just great. Economy class was BYO with many stops to buy coffee etc. It was just so simple, but very efficient. Why couldn’t we have this service from Melbourne to Mildura and return, just put us on the back of the freight trains? It works elsewhere. Please do not say, “but we have the buses”, they are dreadfully uncomfortable for long distance travel, even for me, and I’m totally mobile, heaven help the elderly and sick. To all the people who keep writing that we don’t need a train,

you all should hang your heads in shame. It’s time to start thinking of others and if you don’t want a train, just stop objecting, what difference will it make to you? Just let the rest of us get on with our begging and pleading. A passenger train will make a big difference to the lives of the elderly, sick, students and tourists. And when we do get our own train, we will be very happy for all the negative people not to travel on it. Cheryl Langbine, Mildura

Employment service saved my year KRISTY, Kristen, Lauren, Gemma, Chrissy, Hardeep, Jamie and the rest of you at Max/DES Employment have made my year. What a wonderful place you work in.

Word on the street

What a wonderful job you do. My love and best wishes this festive season. Because of your guidance and lovely support I now have an awesome job. Thank you. Garry Lovell, Mildura

Parents should pick which views kids hear IT seems the Victorian Government might be ending its arrangement with La Trobe University delivering the “Safe Schools” gender-fluidity program into Victorian schools. Good idea. Is not the central issue of parents being able to determine what kind of worldview is imposed on their child? Supposing they attend a school which is promoting fluid-gender ideology – and the parents don’t want him/her exposed to it – how will government react? Arnold Jago, Nichols Point

Big crowd flocks to terror target church Multi-faith celebrations held at St Paul’s Cathedral in lead up to Christmas MELBOURNE: Thousands of people have flooded Melbourne’s St Paul’s Cathedral after the church was named as a target in a foiled terrorist plot that security agencies believe would have had terrible consequences. Three Islamic preachers from the city’s mosques also visited, taking part in leadup services to the midnight Christmas mass, which was overflowing with Anglican and other churchgoers. Some 6500 people have attended St Paul’s Christmas services running over Saturday and yesterday. But more were turned away or had to make do with limited sound and visibility in the forecourt after the 1500-capacity church reached its fill. Three imams came to St Paul’s Saturday Christmas Eve services to show solidarity ahead of the biggest day of the Christian calendar yesterday. “Three imams came through the course of the night, which was certainly a new experience for us,” Dean Andreas Loewe said. “To have actual leaders of Islam with us in solidarity was wonderful.” Dr Loewe was also grateful to representatives of other faiths who also visited St Paul’s. “There was a steady stream of people coming in and out of the cathedral and in the end I had to come out and give the final blessing to people on the forecourt,” he said of the midnight service. Even though the plot – which also included targets such as Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station and Federation Square – was thwarted, its scale and ambition shocked police and security agencies. It allegedly involved home-made improvised explosive devices, knives and

‘Gutless’ shooter still on loose SYDNEY: A killer was still at large yesterday more than 36 hours after a man was fatally w shot in the head and another injured at a western Sydney w park where children were playing. Police believe there were up to 10 people in the park w when the 20-year-old man, named in reports as Antonio Hermiz, was killed after 5pm at Wetherill Park on Friday. An 18-year-old man, reportedly Ronaldo Odisho, was shot in the chest and transferred to Liverpool hos- w pital. NSW detectives have formed a strike force to in- A vestigate the “gutless” shooting, which they say was targeted. “I was appalled that there were up to 10 people in the park at the time of the shooting; these are people who were going about their business, enjoying time together before Christmas,” Detective Superintendent Peter Lennon said. “It is unacceptable that these people have been put at risk in what is, in reality, an incident I’d describe as gutless and appalling.” Mr Odisho was in a stable condition on Saturday afternoon. – AAP

Three-car crash kills unborn baby BRISBANE: A woman is in hospital after losing her unborn baby in a three-car crash on Christmas Eve in Queensland. The 44-year-old driver was seriously injured when her Toyota was involved in a collision in Booral, near Hervey Bay, at around 6.45pm. “The woman was pregnant, and sadly her unborn baby died as a result of the crash,” a Queensland Police spokesman said. – AAP

Lunch brings cheer to homeless

DELIVERING THE GOODS: Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull helps out at a Sydney homeless shelter on Christmas Day. Photo: AAP

SYDNEY: The day was merry and bright at Sydney’s Kings Cross yesterday as hundreds of homeless and marginalised gathered to share a communal Christmas lunch. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy came and helped out as waiters at the Wayside Chapel lunch, where up to 1000 people gathered for the annual event. “We’re celebrating today the birth of a man who came to live with us, the son of God, with a message of unconditional love and sacrifice. And that message is the message that the Wayside Chapel

puts into action every day,” Mr Turnbull said, before he and his wife joined volunteers serving entrees to the hungry crowd. Mr Turnbull’s presence caused a stir, with dozens surrounding him for a chat, a selfie or just a handshake. The Wayside Chapel has hosted the Christmas lunch for about 50 years and inspired an entire movement of similar events across the country. In its early days, the chapel catered to about 100 people, growing into the thousands during the 1970s. “Since then other people have

started throwing parties as well,” Wayside’s founder, Reverend Graham Long, said yesterday. “It’s absolutely fantastic; the more parties the better.” Reverend Bill Crews, who runs a similar community luncheon in Ashfield, began helping the needy with Rev Long before founding the Exodus Foundation. “It was more about making sure people weren’t alone on Christmas Day,” Rev Long said. “We know that the number one issue is isolation and it doesn’t matter whether you’re with money or without, isolation is the number one issue.” – AAP

Nation Shorten: I’ll fight for penalty rates CANBERRA: The Shortens are remembering the “modest heroes” who will be busy working this Christmas and relying on penalty rates while others relax. The Labor leader has again filmed his annual Christmas message with wife Chloe, with the pair reflecting on those who will be serving others through the break. Mr Shorten paid tribute to the troops overseas and their loving families back home who also serve, as well as emergency services personnel. “We think of all those Australians working this holiday season to make our Christmas run smoothly – modest heroes who get up before the sun rises or work through the night,” he said. “Hard-working people, relying on penalty rates to provide for their families – something I’ll always fight for.” Christmas is also a time to spare a thought for those doing it tough – the homeless, those battling loneliness and women and children in refuges, they say. – AAP

Calls for inquiry after refugee dies

SYDNEY: Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has again defended his government’s policy on asylum seekers who arrive by boat after one man died and detainees rioted over his treatment. Refugee advocates now want a royal commission into medical care at Australia’s offshore detention centres on Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island and Nauru in the Pacific. A 27-year-old Sudanese man, Faysal Ishak Ahmed, died on Saturday in Brisbane after being airlifted from Manus the day before. “It appears that Faysal did not receive appropriate treatment for his condition and we now have another death that was likely to have been entirely avoidable,” National Justice Project principal solicitor George Newhouse said yesterday. Faysal collapsed at the centre on Thursday and

had been ill for more than six months, according to a fellow refugee on the island. “Every day Faysal went to medical asking for help. They did not help him,” Behrouz Boochani said in a statement from Manus Island released by the Refu-

to the statement attributed to Mr Boochani. The Department of Immigration said the man had died from injuries suffered after a fall and suffering a seizure. “The department is not aware of any suspicious

turned yesterday. “We took control of the whole prison. Now the refugees are angry and sad, but the situation otherwise looks normal,” Mr Boochani said. The not-for-profit human rights law centre National Justice Project wants a “prompt” inquest into Faysal’s death. It’s also called on the federal government to set up a royal commission into the provision of medical care on Manus Island and Australia’s other detention centre on Nauru. “The Minister for Immigration (Peter Dutton) is on record complaining of a war on Christmas,” Mr Newhouse said. “Where is this government’s spirit of charity and love for the most desperate and vulnerable people in the world at this time?” – AAP

Child dies after being left in car SYDNEY: A three year-old girl is dead after she was pulled from a car and suffered cardiac arrest in Sydney’s north-west. Emergency services were called to Cameo Circuit, Glenwood before 5pm on Saturday after receiving reports the girl was inside a car parked outside a home. Police say family were performing CPR inside the home when they arrived. A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said the girl was in cardiac arrest by the time paramedics got there. The child was taken to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a critical condition but later died, police said.

Woman charged with murder in Bendigo MELBOURNE: A woman has been charged with murder following the death of a man in the Bendigo suburb of Kangaroo Flat. Emergency services attended a home in the suburb at about 6pm on Saturday to find a man with stab wounds. He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene. A 33-year-old Kangaroo Flat woman has been charged with murder and has been remanded to appear in court on December 28.

Car crash sees baby, woman hospitalised BRISBANE: A baby has been seriously injured and a woman is fighting for life after a car plunged into a creek in southeast Queensland. The car swerved down an embankment off Anzac Avenue, Moreton Bay, and clipped a concrete pylon before plunging into a creek at around 4.30am on Christmas Day. A 35-year-old woman was trapped inside the vehicle and was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. A baby was taken to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital with serious injuries. The driver, a 25-yearold man, was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Charges after man tortured BRISBANE: A 42-yearold man was beaten, burnt and robbed over a 20-hour period before managing to flee a house at Marsden in south-east Queensland, police say. The man had arrived at the address in the Logan City suburb at around 10pm on Friday to ask about buying a motorcycle from people known to him, but he was allegedly detained against his will. “The man was allegedly assaulted with unknown implements and burnt with an unknown substance during his ordeal, and had personal property stolen,” police said. The man managed to escape at around 5pm on Saturday. – AAP

closest of all in our thoughts and in our hearts,” he said. “We are grateful for your sacrifice and the sacrifice your families make, especially at this time of year.” He said that in 2016 the ADF had delivered a compassionate, humanitarian response to Tropical Cyclone Winston in Fiji, continued maritime security

operations in the Middle East and continued to assist in UN operations in South Sudan. Air Force missions over Iraq and Syria also provided critical combat support in Iraq’s fight to defeat the Islamic State group, Mr Turnbull said. “So at Christmas, it is with the deepest respect

and admiration that I thank you – the men and women of the ADF – for your service in 2016,” he said. “And we know that in this Anzac centenary year, we best honour the diggers of 1916 by supporting you, the servicemen and women, and the veterans and your families of 2016.” – AAP

World inbrief Russian plane with 91 on board missing MOSCOW: A Russian Tu-154 aircraft with 91 people aboard, including a famed military band, has disappeared over the Black Sea shortly after takeoff from the resort town of Sochi, the defence ministry says. The ministry said the plane was carrying the famous Alexandrov military band for a concert at the Russian air base in Syria. A total of 83 passengers and eight crew were on board when the plane dropped off radar early yesterday. Emergency services were searching for the plane, a Soviet-designed three-engine airliner, the ministry said. Russian media reports said the plane disappeared over the sea a few minutes after takeoff.

Big sum raised for slain Polish truckie WARSAW: A crowdfunding campaign has raised over $236,000 for the family of Polish truck driver Lukasz Urban, who was killed as he apparently tried to seize back control of his vehicle, which was used in an attack on a Berlin Christmas market. The campaign was started by British truck driver Dave Duncan on Tuesday, a day after a man believed to be Anis Amri – shot dead by police on Friday – attacked Lukasz and ploughed the Polish man’s truck into a Christmas market, killing 12 people. Lukasz, 37, was found dead in the cabin of the truck with multiple stab wounds and a gunshot wound.

Trump dumps charity President-elect reveals plan to close foundation which is under investigation NEW YORK CITY: US President-elect Donald Trump says he intends to dissolve the Donald J. Trump Foundation, which is currently under investigation by the New York attorney general. Trump gave no timeline for winding down the foundation, but said in a statement that he wanted “to avoid even the appearance

of any conflict with my role as President.” He takes office on January 20. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman in October directed the foundation to stop taking donations because he said it violated state law requiring charitable organisations to register with a state office. The order followed re-

ports in The Washington Post that suggested improprieties by the foundation, including using its funds to settle legal disputes involving Trump businesses. A spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office said yesterday that Trump could not shut the foundation while the investigation was ongoing.

“The Trump Foundation is still under investigation by this office and cannot legally dissolve until that investigation is complete,” spokeswoman Amy Spitalnick said. She would not say when the investigation was likely to be completed. Trump said he was “very proud” of the money raised by the foundation and said

Sri Lanka claims world’s tallest Christmas tree COLOMBO: Sri Lanka has unveiled a towering Christmas tree, claiming to have surpassed the world record despite construction delays and a shorter-than-planned finished product. The 73m artificial tree in the capital Colombo is 18m taller than the current record holder, organisers said. The tree’s steel-and-wire frame is covered with a plastic net decorated with more than a million natural pinecones, 600,000 LED bulbs and topped by a 6m-tall star. The tree cost $111,400 and

was criticised by the Catholic Church as a “waste of money”. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe responded to the criticism by saying the tree was not being built with public money, but with donations from individuals and private firms. Guinness World Records is yet to confirm if this is the tallest artificial Christmas tree. Sri Lankan organisers said they wanted the tree to help promote ethnic and religious harmony in the Buddhist-majority island nation. – AP

VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis has celebrated Christmas Eve mass in a packed St Peter’s Basilica, rounding out a year marked by his pleas for the world to better protect innocents caught up in wars, migrations and abject poverty. The late night Mass was the first major event of the Christmas season, and was to be followed by Pope Francis’ noon Urbi et Orbi (To the city and the world) blessing on Christmas Day. In his homily, the Pope urged his flock to reflect on how children today aren’t always allowed to lie peacefully in a cot, loved by their parents as Jesus was, but rather “suffer the squalid mangers that devour dignity.” He also called for the faithful to not get caught up in the commercialisation of Christmas – “when we are concerned for gifts but cold toward those who are marginalised.” Materialism has “taken us hostage this Christmas,” he said. “We have to free ourselves of it!” – AP

Phillipines church blast injures 16 MANILA: Sixteen people have been wounded in a grenade explosion outside a Catholic church during a Christmas eve mass in the Philippines’ restive southern island of Mindanao, a priest and police say. No group has claimed responsibility for the Mindanao attack, but Muslim rebels and Islamist extremists are known to be active in the province, where there have been blasts in the past.

Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt dies LONDON: Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt, who carved out a career spanning half a century, has died at the age of 68. His death at on Saturday followed years of concern about his ill health, which had seen him stricken by multiple heart attacks and a cancer scare.

Super typhoon spends Xmas in the Philippines MANILA: Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes in the Philippines on Christmas Day as powerful Typhoon Nock-Ten barrels towards the country’s eastern coast. Nearly 12,000 passengers were stranded after sea travel was suspended and more than a dozen domestic flights to eastern provinces were cancelled as the typhoon neared. Nock-Ten, which was intensifying as it neared the Philippines, was expected to make landfall on Sunday evening over the eastern province of Catanduanes, the country’s weather bureau said. The typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 185km/h and gusts of up to 255km/h. It was moving west at 15km/h, and was set to bring heavy rainfall. Coastal areas were

warned of storm surges reaching up to 2.5m. In the province of Camarines Sur, Governor Miguel Villafuerte promised to provide roasted pork to residents who moved to evacuation centres to make sure they were still able to celebrate Christmas. “I know it is Christmas … but this is a legitimate typhoon,” he tweeted. “Please evacuate, I will bring lechon [whole roasted pig] to the evacuation centres.” More than 48,000 people moved to evacuation centres in the province, local authorities said. In nearby Abay province, more than 76,000 people spent the night in evacuation centres or moved in with relatives and friends. The weather bureau raised storm warnings in 38 provinces, including Manila. – DPA

Netanyahu blasts UN vote as ‘shameful’ JERASALEM: Israel will reassess its ties with the United Nations after the adoption by the Security Council of a resolution demanding an end to Israeli settlement building, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says. The vote was able to pass the 15-member council on Friday because the US broke with a long-standing approach of diplomatically shielding Israel and did not wield its veto power as it had on many times before – a decision that Netanyahu called “shameful”. “I instructed the Foreign Ministry to complete within a month a re-evaluation of all our contacts with the United Nations, including the Israeli funding of UN institutions and the presence of UN representatives

Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel,” Netanyahu said in broadcast remarks. “I have already instructed to stop about 30 million shekels ($10.9 million) in funding to five UN institutions, five bodies, that are especially hostile to Israel … and there is more to come,” he said. The Israeli leader did not

name the institutions or offer any further details. Defying heavy pressure from long-time ally of Israel and President-elect Donald Trump for Washington to use its veto, the US abstained in the Security Council decision, which passed with 14 votes in favour. Israel for decades has pursued a policy of constructing Jewish settlements on territory captured by Israel in a 1967 war with its Arab neighbours including the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. Most countries view Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as illegal and an obstacle to peace. Israel disagrees, citing a biblical connection to the land. – Reuters

In making a word each letter may be used only once, and the centre letter must be included. There must be at least one 9-letter word. No slang, foreign words, plurals, hyphens or apostrophes.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Instead of wanting something from another person, want something for that person. This subtle shift of intention in your wanting will make a powerful difference in your ability to persuade.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). What was lost and longed for has been found! It’s one of the most satisfying emotions of all — sweet relief. Celebrate first, and then put into place the safety measures to prevent future loss.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Ask any ballerina; balance requires core strength. Core strength is also needed in your dance through life. You’ll get it in characterbuilding moments. To flail and fall is human. To pop back up, divine.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). As it happens, it only takes a small action to advance the plot of a certain delightful storyline of your life. The very specific (and probably charming) gesture you make will change or reinforce the way someone feels about you.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). There are some really tricky aspects to the day, but you’ve been known to surmount much bigger challenges. When you put your mind to it, you usually amaze yourself, and today will be no different.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). The felicitous circumstance of the day is that what you want wants you right back. You still have to take action to get it, though. The first action will be to communicate delicately but clearly.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). You’re too busy looking at what you have to notice what you may have missed. Good. Stay that way. It’s the way to grow your love and appreciation into a very interesting future. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Why should you get hooked into other people’s bad moods that have nothing to do with you? Thought of the day: Ignoring provocation is not defeat; it’s actually productivity. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Whether you’re being paid for the work or not, you’ll benefit from setting clearly defined objectives. Decide how you will know you’ve arrived at the goal, and then choose the actions that will get you there.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Go forward, even if you have to go alone. You’ll take only a few steps solo, really. It won’t be long before you’re joined by one who sees the significance of your journey. This person may even hold your hand. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You take the responsibility of growing your own brain very seriously. These days, the job may require that you let go of some dearly held beliefs you’ve had for a long time. They may have been comforting, but they are limiting, too. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). It’s a good day to ignore the bad habits of those close to you. Your refusal to pay attention will free you up for a truly wondrous block of time in which you can focus on what fortifies you.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Dec. 26). Big projects will move forward. A higher degree of teamwork will be necessary to make things happen in 2017. As if on cue, new members sign up to help in February. You’re the glue of your social network, and you can expect to also be the frequent host. Financially, June and October will be highlights. Libra and Cancer adore you. Boxing Day Test

Maddinson gets his Christmas miracale Struggling batsman given a reprieve as selectors stick with their winning team

MELBOURNE: Australia will field an unchanged XI for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan at the MCG, with struggling batsman Nic Maddinson spared the axe. There had been strong speculation Maddinson could be dropped in favour of uncapped allrounder Hilton Cartwright, having scored a duck, one and four in his first two matches in the baggy green. But Australian captain Steve Smith said selectors opted to stick with the team that beat Pakistan in Brisbane, despite the heavy workload his pacemen shouldered during the first Test. Pakistan’s stubborn fourth-innings comeback at the Gabba meant Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood each bowled 56 overs for the match, while Jackson Bird bowled 45. “We brought the allrounder into the squad because the bowlers had a pretty heavy workload but they’ve pulled up well and they’re confident they can get through,” Smith said yesterday. “Obviously (Nic) hasn’t started the way he would have liked. I was really proud of him in the second innings in Brisbane to come out and do the thing for the team and try and score quick runs and have a crack.

DISAPPOINTING: Batsman Nic Maddinson departs after being dismissed for four runs on day three of the first Test. “That’s what we want from our team, to have unselfish players like that and I thought he did a good job to come out and do that.” With plenty of grass on the MCG wicket, Smith may be tempted to send his bowlers in first should he win the toss.

“It’s a lot greener than I’ve seen it in the past couple of years,” he said. “The grass dies pretty quickly here and the wicket goes white so we’ll sum it up the morning and see what we want to do from there. “I think the red ball out

here is going to be a lot different to the pink ball. “It will probably stay harder for a lot longer, so we’ll be able to generate that bounce and carry that we couldn’t do for long periods of time (in Brisbane).” The decision to field an

unchanged line-up in Melbourne signals a desire for continuity after a period of turmoil during Australia’s 2-1 series loss to South Africa. And with a tour of India on the horizon, Smith is confident Australia is back on track. – AAP

Warner confident big score is close MELBOURNE: Australian opener Dave Warner is confident a big Test score isn’t far away, with the big stage of the Boxing Day Test the perfect opportunity to get back amongst the runs Warner’s form with the bat at Test level hasn’t matched his blazing limitedovers output of late, but the opener isn’t fazed. “It’s just a little bit of a cycle, I think,” Warner said. “I go out to try and put as many runs as I can on the board as I can. Same mindset, same process I go through with training (but), at the moment, I’m hitting them well in the nets but not making enough in the middle. “The tide will change. Many players before have experienced the same thing. “I’ve just got to keep a level head, a cool head, and make sure that I watch every ball as hard and as closely as I can.” Warner made 97 in the first innings of the first Test against South Africa but hasn’t passed the half-century mark since. His form in the ODIs is white hot in comparison, the opener blasting seven centuries this year with backto-back tons in his last two innings against New Zealand this month. Warner is unsure whether a concerted effort to improve his limited-overs output 18 months ago has adversely affected his Test form. “It’s a tough thing to answer because sometimes as a player you go from Twenty20 to Tests to one-dayers then start Tests again and it is hard but you’ve got to adapt,” he said. “Being a professional player you get used to it but you have to keep calm and back what you do. “In the nets I’m hitting them well but you’ve got to take that out onto the field.” – AAP

The young Victorian has made an impressive start to his Test career, scoring 54 on debut against South Africa and then backing it up with his maiden Test hundred against Pakistan at the Gabba. Just how he handles the big stage in front of his home-state fans at the MCG could be crucial to Australia’s success.

The Australian skipper is in fine form, coming off scores of 130 and 63 in the first Test at the Gabba and his record at the MCG is equally impressive – two centuries and an average of 94.6 in four Tests. Pakistani captain ul-Haq, on the other hand, will be keen to bounce back after scores of four and five at the Gabba.

Television Call The Midwife

TODAY’S CHOICE

ABC, 8.30pm Christmas is almost forgotten (well, at least for another 12 months), but that doesn’t mean you should miss out on Call The Midwife’s tinsel-clad Christmas special. It’s a late delivery, but better than none at all. This is a Christmas special in the most traditional sense, where kindness is the best present one can give and receive. It’s a tearjerker, but one that will leave you happier for the experience. reprises his role as crack secret agent Ethan Hunt in the surprisingly excellent fourth chapter of the popular franchise. With help from talented behind-thescenes players (director Brad Bird and producer JJ Abrams), this spy yarn features great set-pieces as Hunt is forced to go rogue after a mission goes bad in Moscow and the Kremlin is obliterated. Do not miss the show-stopping scene in which Cruise scales the outside of Dubai’s gargantuan Burj Khalifa.

STATE CALL UP Twin brothers Alec and Brodie Carrigan have been selected in the 2017 South Australia Under 18s men’s team while Hayley Crowhurst (left) is a train-on for the Under 18s women’s team.

By Angus Dearlove angusd@sunraysiadaily.com.au

TWIN brothers and Rivaside hockey stars Alec and Brodie Carrigan will don South Australian colours for the first time together in Hobart at the Under 18 National Championships in April next year. While goalkeeper Alec, 17, two minutes older than Brodie, represented the same team this year, it is Brodie’s first state selection after years on the cusp. “I trialled for the 2016 team but didn’t get through so I’m pretty

happy to make it this year,” Brodie said. He said coming into the state system later than some wouldn’t be a problem. “There’s always that core group of four to five players who had done the state stuff from Under 13s to Under 18s but I fit in well with most of the lads there,” Brodie said. “I don’t find it too hard.” South Australia finished sixth last year, which Alec said was disappointing and something they’d be looking to improve on in 2017.

“We didn’t end up finishing as well as we should have (this year),” Alec said. “We got a pretty tough pool originally (but) we still put up a good fight against those better teams.” As well as competing against other states, Alec said he’d also be testing himself against the second goalkeeper in the team. Burnside’s Damon Leng was also in the 2016 side. “There always is a bit of competitiveness between the two goalies in the team,” Alec said. “We are a bit lucky this year,

me and Damon are both reasonably handy so we got similar game time.” Because the pair grew up together and always played in the same teams locally, they both had a top quality opponent to build skills with. However, Brodie said during the trials their bond made it difficult to impress the coaches. “Because we spend so much time together Alec knows how to read me so usually he saves even my better shots,” he said. “I tried to shoot against the

other keeper because he doesn’t know me as well.” Meanwhile, Waratahs defender Hayley Crowhurst, 15, has been selected as a train-on for the Under 18s women’s team after previously representing South Australia in the Under 15s. Crowhurst is one of four trainons available to replace any member of the team who pulls out before the championships. “It would be nice (to be called up),” Crowhurst said. “But either way I’ve got two more years (of Under 18s).”
