A Window on Asian Cinema

2016│85 min│Drama│Director CHEN Yu-jie

Chinese student Lia has died in a diving accident in Taiwan, and suffocation triggered by an overdose of sleeping pills found in her body is established as the cause of death. Since her half-sister Shin, who lives with her, is an experienced diver, the fact that Shin not only didn’t stop Lian going to the event but dived with her makes Shin herself a murder suspect. Their father Sheng, who now works and lives in China, rushes back to Taiwan and meets his estranged elder daughter. Although Sheng keeps Lian’s death secret from her mother at first, her disappearance soon alerts her mother. When Lian’s mother learns of the news, she hurries to Taiwan, vowing to find out about the truth. Meanwhile, Shin’s mother (Sheng’s ex-wife) is trying her best to protect Shin. Having already lost Lian, Sheng cannot afford to let the incident ruin Shin’s life. Nonetheless, during all these years while Sheng is away in China, Shin has become a strong independent woman and harboured deep distrust of her own father. Moreover, the captain of the swimming team Yen seems to be hiding something… A storm trigged by the past is about to strike a family separated by the Taiwan Strait.

Autumn Days

秋日

2015│24 min│Biography│Director TSAI Ming-liang

Wide Angle Short Film Showcase

NOGAMI has seen all my films, as has her best friend Jiro. They often take Xiao-kang and I to NOGAMI's favorite gastropub. We would wine and dine, and have a blast. We give each other big hugs before we say goodbyes. Every time we come to Japan, it's the same. Twenty years, it has been. Her hair is now all grey. Her back is more humped. But her head is clear as can be. One day, on the spur of the moment, I said I want to film her. She said to me, squinting, "Then you'd better hurry, time is running out." When I actually approached her on filming, she kept telling me not to come. "Why do you want to film an old wrinkly lady?" "Don't film me. There's really nothing to film." "I've never had someone film me." "NOGAMI, I'm not someone.” "I am your lover." “OK, OK, OK, Tsai-san is my last boyfriend.” Giggles came from the other side of the phone. An autumn afternoon, we were at Toho Studios. The sun was playing hide and seek that day. I filmed her and Xiao-kang. I wanted to preserve her portrait, as a gift to Japan and children of the future.

Director TSAI Ming-liang Born in Malaysia in 1957, TSAI Ming-liang is one of the most prominent film directors of the New Wave cinema movement in Taiwan. His last narrative feature Stray Dogs (2013) was awarded Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. He also worked on many innovative installation art and stage projects in recent years. Wide Angle Short Film Showcase

Ximending was once the trendiest place in Taipei, where young people gathered and squandered their youth. It was also the shooting location for LEE Kang-sheng’s first leading feature film Rebels of the Neon God. It all started when LEE met TSAI Ming-liang in front of a video game store, and was asked by the director: “Do you want to star in my movie?” A single decision made by LEE during that first encounter not only set the path for his life, but also made TSAI Mingliang’s movies possible. Twenty years later, returned to where everything started and made a film about himself.

怪我太年輕

In pre-production│Coming-of-Age, Romance, Crime│Director WANG Wei-ming

Youth burns, as riot does, uncontrolled, unstoppable. Three 17-year-old Taiwanese boys were in three different times. When exploring the possibilities of youth, they face the restraint put on them by the time they live in. For love, they pay the heavy prices that transform them into adults. The confusion, anxiety, curiosity and their insistence on pursuing their ideas become the collective memories of each generation; there are also choices they have to make when facing love, friendship and family. In 1972, Hope, a high school boy could never expect that in the White Terror era in Taiwan, one has to pay for love with blood. In 1990, when Taiwanese Martial Law is lifted, the high school boy KUNG who fell for a male teacher burnt out in the game of love. In 2014, the young hooligan Wei joined all sorts of gangs and groups in order to win recognition. One day, his father Hope broke the silence between them and told him a secret he has kept since he was 17.

Turning 18

只要有個家

In post-production│Coming-of-Age, Indigenous Peoples│Director HO Chao-ti

In Taiwanese/Chinese society, home is a place from which they seek warmth and support. But for Hui-chen, it is a place full of painful memories. Only when she escapes from her family will she get her own life back. After she has turned eighteen, Hui-chen has to make a choice. Born in a broken indigenous family, she has been searching for an ideal home. Should she leave home? Will she be able to do that even if they decide to? Young girls who run away from home are still stigmatized in our society, and they are expected to return to their families. Nonetheless, when the only thing their families give them is endless harm, is leaving home an irresponsible escape or an action of taking responsibility for themselves?
