RE: STOP SIGNS NEAR BALD HILL The Police have just advised me that, given the large number of accidents at this intersection, Highway Patrol vehicles will be increasing their presence. Several good hidden-from-view spots near that junction. Don’t waste Christmas spending money on traffic fines, obey the Stop signs. – Reg Lobb, Stanwell Park ORIGINS OF THE NAME, ‘INTERBANE’ I really enjoyed Heather Smith’s article in last month’s 2508 on ‘Interbane’. I have written quite a lot about Stanwell Park, doing a deal of research along the way. So I share with you the offering below: “A fine holiday home built on Bald Hill was what is now known as ‘Interbane’. The original name was ‘Intabane’, a Zulu word meaning ‘Top of the Hill’. It was built in 1917 by Walter Goodman, a veteran of the Boer War, for 3000 pounds. Goodman ran a business in shoes and leather goods. It was known locally as the ‘Witch’s Hat’ because of its large conical tower. When it was destroyed by lightning, the present tower, a smaller version of the original, was built. – Michael Adams, author of Little Bulli, a book about the pioneering days in Stanwell Park.

RESIDENTS ‘DISTRESSED’ OVER DUCKS, 2508 reports. Despite an influx of Sydneysiders transforming Helensburgh from a mining to commuter town, the Burgh remains, at heart, a place where people stop to allow ducks to cross the road. So it was no surprise that news of a Council permit from National Parks to remove up to 20 native wood ducks from the pool area should spark community outrage. Residents vented on social media, reporting children had been “distressed” by signs that culling would take place. “Due to public health concerns, Wollongong City Council has been working over a number of years to manage an issue with ducks at Helensburgh and Corrimal Pools,” a spokesperson said. “The public health concerns relate to flocks of ducks defecating in the water and pool surrounds. “Council pool staff have implemented strategies (including visual deterrents, plantings, and sonar) to reduce the presence of ducks … without success. Unfortunately, the ducks are territorial and if relocated likely to return to the pool surrounds. Council has engaged a licenced contractor to trap, remove and “humanely euthanise” the ducks. In an unrelated incident on October 17, several ducklings entered Helensburgh Pool overnight. Staff found dead ducklings the next morning. n Helensburgh Pool will be closed for urgent repairs for about two weeks from 29 October. Works at Coalcliff Pool are complete. 2508

I see couples of all ages and I have a great respect for the strength that two people can create together in a committed relationship. My earlier working life was in the travel and events industry, where attention to detail was paramount. Performing music in front of live audiences for several decades now has grown to become my comfort zone; no doubt, this is also helpful. So now, when I think about those comments from friends, I agree: celebrancy really is a perfect fit for me. My husband Mark and I were married in ’94 and weddings at that time tended to be a bit copybook; we sought the services of a celebrant and were married in Camellia Gardens, Caringbah. Twenty-three years on (and not without our share HOW I BECAME A CELEBRANT of hurdles), I feel truly blessed to have an enduring When I first started telling my family and friends marriage and two beautiful adult children that I was thinking of becoming a civil celebrant, to treasure. the responses were statements like, ‘Oh, you’d be Now more than ever it seems couples are perfect for that’ and ‘I can totally see you doing that choosing to organise a wedding day that reflects type of work’. who they are. LEO STEVENS

Coalcliff SLSC’s youngest ever president on having fun as a nipper, learning management skills and the club’s plans for the future. 2508 reports.

When 2508 meets Leo Stevens, president of Coalcliff SLSC, for our cover feature photo-shoot, it’s easy to see why this bloke garners respect from the surf life saving community. He’s a soft-spoken, intelligent guy with a quick wit and sharp insight. He’s also busy. At the time of writing, he was working on a number of jobs and projects, including material science research, lecturing at the University of Wollongong and serving on a start-up company’s advisory board.

14 2508 NOVEMBER

Elected to the president’s role in the lead-up to the 2016/17 season, Leo has been with Coalcliff SLSC since starting as a nipper in 1994/95 and his family have strong links with the club. He joined with his older sister, Toni, and his parents, Rod Stevens and Rosemary Thompson. Leo, Coalcliff ’s youngest president, and the first to have risen through the ranks from nippers to the top job, kindly took the time to answer 2508’s questions.

You’re the youngest president of Coalcliff SLSC. How did you feel when you were elected? I was 27 when I was elected, and it was certainly an honour to be entrusted with the stewardship of a club. Coalcliff SLSC, like most surf clubs, is always on the look-out for more volunteers to help keep our show on the road, and the committee generally finds room (and titles) for anyone who is keen to help out with the running of the club. In my case I was very aware of all of the good times and great support the club had given myself and my family over the years, and accepting the role of president seemed like a nice way to pay it forward to the next generation of families. As for the ‘youngest president’ title, I daresay it might be more of a reflection on the surf club’s typical demographics than it is on my own youth.

everyone seems happy to take my numerous mistakes in their stride. I am certainly coming to appreciate that the best job I can do as president is having everything running smoothly, and most people barely noticing that I am here at all. As long as the club’s goals are clear, and the right people are given all of the resources they need, I can just step back and trust the team. Explain the appeal of being a surf club member. Why should people join Coalcliff? Coalcliff is a small club at the centre of a tight-knit community. That small-town feeling has certainly permeated the DNA of the club, and being a member here is much more about being welcomed into a family than it is about the hard edge of competition and being pushed to your limit. I think for many incoming nipper parents, including my own 20 or so years ago, there is a great attraction in the safety and security that such a friendly and laid-back atmosphere provides. I can also strongly recommend the club for its lifesaving training programs, led by one of the Illawarra’s most experienced trainers, David Winner, who has put countless Surf Lifesaving members through their Bronze medallions, CPR training, first aid certificates and many other awards. I don’t think anyone could ask for a better place to learn the important skills of water safety than they would get at Coalcliff SLSC.

What are Coalcliff SLSC’s plans for summer 2017/18? And further down the track? What’s the most rewarding aspect of your role as Coalcliff beach is a hive of activity at the moment president? What’s most challenging? as it is undergoing a major revitalisation, including I’m naturally quite an inquisitive person, and for works being conducted for beach stabilisation, the me the opportunity to sink my teeth into some new addition of new amenities for the public pool, a and interesting challenges with a wide array planned clubhouse extension and the construction passionate people is great. How did you get involved in surf life-saving? I joined Coalcliff SLSC as a nipper. Being less than 10 years old at the time, it is probably fair to say that the decision to join was made for me, rather than by me. No doubt my sister and I were both loaded up with beach gear and shipped out of the house every second Sunday with little chance for protest or negotiation. But both of us invariably had a ball once we arrived, made friends in the community and, unbeknownst to us, learned some important water skills while we were at it. Now I am nearing 30 and I suppose I can’t blame my parents for the fact that I still turn up here on Sundays. But I have grown to love the club, and now it just feels like a second home.

Grateful Guides Heather McNaughton reports.

Giggle Booth for sale

The owners of Helensburgh’s party photo booth are looking for someone to carry on the fun. Kim Lee reports.

Helensburgh Girl Guides would like to thank the local community for their support and generous donations during our recent collections for ‘Shoes for the Planet’, and for local animal shelters and groups. Close to 50 pairs of gym shoes were collected for ‘Shoes for the Planet’, as well as eight boxes of old towels, newspapers and blankets for the local vets, RSPCA and WIRES. Congratulations to Bryn, Chantelle and Maeve from the Guide Unit who organised these collections and have truly learnt what it means to serve your community. Many thanks also to Donna Prentice who helped the girls with their collections. The girls are currently looking forward to the Boree Regatta Camp where they will get the opportunity to test their skills against Guides and Scouts from across the Southern Sydney region. Christmas is coming! Save the date to buy a quality real Christmas tree from the Guide Hall in Chippendale Place from 2pm on Friday, December 8, continuing on the morning of Saturday, December 9. We get asked quite a lot: “Why The Giggle Booth?” Kelvin and I had our wedding in Rarotonga, it was a very laid-back event. Two days before, we booked a photo booth. It was so much fun, our guests had an amazing time and, of course, we now have wonderful, fun memories to look back on. This gave us the idea of starting up our business. We have not looked back since. Four years on and we are still loving our work and enjoy attending all the wonderful events. We pride ourselves on good, old-fashioned customer service and quality prints. We also have a booth that captures video messaging, which is a lovely memory for clients to look back on after their event. Let’s say they can get quite interesting towards the end of the night! As do the photos! After one year of being in business we needed to buy a second booth – an inflatable cube. This booth has been a huge hit – it really is a talking point. Both can be converted into an open-air booth. We are now coming into our busy season with Christmas parties, school formals, balls etc and have a lot of repeat clients. We also get lots of great feedback on the quality of props. With more than 450 props, I have now been banned from prop shopping! Although I do sneak a few in! Next year we are fortunate enough to be able to pack up and travel Australia in our caravan. So the business is up for sale. We are hoping that whoever buys it will have the same vision as we do. We would love to see the business stay local. Thinking about purchasing the Giggle Booth? Fantastic idea, with $10,000 worth of bookings that are guaranteed, this is a great business to run and Helensburgh Guides collected almost 50 pairs of gym shoes manage. Art of the deal

An opportunity awaits for a ‘buyer with vision’ in Stanwell Park. 2508 reports. Painter John Vander and his wife, Frances, are Stanwell Park stalwarts. They’ve run Articles Fine Art Gallery since March 1980, when the now towering palms out front were only about a metre tall. In 1984, they opened Stanwell Park’s first tearooms, serving scones, Twinings tea (Frances is English) and Rombouts Belgian coffee (John was born in Charleroi, Belgium). They are founding members of the Northern Illawarra Chamber of Commerce and Destination Wollongong. Now the couple are looking to slow down, sell the gallery and move to Cronulla to be closer to their family, including daughter Katrine Rinaldi, who runs the Precious Fusion Contemporary Jewellery & Metalwork Gallery. The Articles site has a long history – prior to an art gallery, it was a supermarket and bottleshop. Further back in time, the original building, circa 1908, was a guesthouse run by the Hopkins family. In the 1930s, a fire burnt it down; the man who

rebuilt in the ‘50s was an army officer who built the first motel in Australia, John said. Today it’s also home to the Palms Cafe, Coal Coast Organics, Boho Chic Boutique and Emporium. The Vanders, who have listed with Belle’s Wendy Lepre, are looking for “expressions of interest” in the property, which covers four blocks, 111-117 Lawrence Hargrave Drive, total land size 2025m². Frances said they’d like a “buyer with vision”. “It’s the potential we’re selling,” she said. “We wouldn’t care if someone knocked it all down and rebuilt as long as it served the community, building shops that people need – like a cafe by day or restaurant by night. They could also put flats on top.” But the Vanders are in no rush. Right now, they’re looking forward to a busy Christmas and, Council improvements next year, including a paved path out front and more parking spaces. And if they do sell, John won’t stop painting; “He’ll never retire,” Frances said. “He’ll paint Cronulla.” 2508

Small school, big ideas Otford Public School teacher Pat Lantry tells how students joined the nationwide Garage Sale Trail in October. It should never be said that small schools think small. Otford Public School has gained a reputation as a forward-thinking school and its staff are leaders in STEAM teaching. (STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.) Otford’s teachers are now STEAM mentors, providing and demonstrating examples of effective STEAM teaching to 15 other schools in NSW. On October 21, the year 2/3 class hosted a garage sale as part of sustainability studies. They have been learning hands-on about growing food, recycling paper and developing uses for recyclable plastics and discarded fabrics. This led to the students supporting the Garage Sale Trail, an initiative to ensure unwanted items such as furniture, toys, books and clothes avoid landfill.

18 2508 NOVEMBER

The focus was based on finding items a home, not a hole. Our garage sale was not designed as a fundraising exercise, but a promotion of good community ideals. It was a great success. The kids managed to sell their unwanted toys and books, sometimes to each other, and the community came together in what resulted in a fantastic social day and a win for sustainability. 2508

THE HOME FRONT HOW TO MAXIMISE YOUR SALE PRICE One question sellers inevitably ask me is: “What can I do to my home to ensure that I get the best price?” This is a good question and one I’m glad you asked… There are some very cost-effective methods of ensuring that your home is presented in its best light and will assist in appealing to buyers’ emotions. Step 1 The most important step is to fix anything that is damaged or defective. This may be something as small as a broken tap. However, when the buyer sees small problems, they begin to question the upkeep of the home and wonder what other issues they may be missing. Step 2 The emotional response a buyer has to a property is largely based on visual appeal. Below are some relatively low-cost improvements that can greatly increase the aesthetic appeal of a home. • Paint internal and external walls, gutters and fence. • If carpet is worn, faded or stained, consider replacing it (especially in living areas).

• • • •

Polish floorboards if required. Stain timber decking. Clean any light coloured grout around internal tiles. Remove mouldy silicone around sinks and bathtubs, then re-silicone those areas. • Clean external pavers, paths and driveway. • Ensure lawn is kept neat and tidy. • Trim existing foliage, add more plants to garden beds where necessary and add fresh mulch. Step 3 Consider updating or renovating some areas, spending money where it will be most appreciated. According to buyer surveys, the room expected to give the best return on your investment is the kitchen, followed by the bathroom. A quick update that does not require moving pipes – e.g. new tiles, benchtops, handles and taps – can provide a fresh look at an affordable price. If you would like to chat with your local real estate expert about how to achieve the best price for your property, call Mattias on 0466 627 226.

We are looking forward to fine skies, light winds and plenty of local support for the Festival of Flight on Sunday, November 12, writes CWA president Carol Pugh. The Festival of Flight celebrates and acknowledges the historical significance of Stanwell Park as the Australian “Birthplace of Flight”, where aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave became the first man in Australia to fly a miraculous “16 feet” using his specially designed box kites on 12 November 1894. The festival marks this date with historical displays and flight-related activities. There will also be fantastic stalls, food and interesting goods for sale, as well as live music and rides for children. The event will raise funds for the upgrade of the CWA Hall in Stanwell Park. Our hall is used by many local groups and individuals and we want to make it as pleasant as we can for your continued use. 2508

Perfectly hatched

Stanwell Park photographer Matt Smith had just five minutes to capture the moment a flood of baby turtles swam out to sea, and the result was “photographic gold”. His stunning over/under image is now on show at the Australian Museum, as part of the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year 2017 exhibition. Matt told 2508 how he came to capture this pic. “It’s a shot of a hawksbill turtle hatchling that I took last Christmas in Papua New Guinea. I was there specifically to photograph these hatchlings as they took their first strokes in the wide ocean; the one in the photograph was only 3cm long and literally about three minutes old! “It was a hectic shoot but one that will live with me forever. A few days previous to the hatch I had received a phone call from the dive resort at Lissenung Island telling me they had four nests due for hatching in a four-day window over Christmas and could I come to photograph the event. Of course I agreed and got myself on the next available flight. Upon arrival to the small island the waiting began, sitting and waiting for tiny turtles to appear out of the sand! “Their timing was epic! The hatch began just at sunset and the light was to die for, first a trickle, then a flood of a hundred baby turtles across the sand to where I was waiting in the ocean. I snapped away as they passed me and headed off into the darkness. The whole thing was over in about five minutes but was photographic gold, a rare event when it all just drops into place perfectly. “High fives and beers all round shortly after.”

24 2508 NOVEMBER

Matt – a contract engineer by profession and originally from the UK – launched a second career as a ocean wildlife photographer after winning accolades in several 2014 competitions, including the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year. He won the overall prize at Australian Geographic’s 2014 Nature Photographer of the Year competition with an over/under shot of a bluebottle, Physalia physalis, that was taken at Shellharbour’s Bushrangers Bay. In the past three years, he has travelled widely, photographing marine life from Papua New Guinea to Cuba. Matt will lead his first photography tutorial expedition to the Solomon Islands in July next year. Matt started taking over/under photos using water housing he designed himself. He now uses Nikon cameras and Aquatica Digital, but still brings out his own water housing for some shoots. “The next time my home-made gear will get an outing is mid November when I go to Port Lincoln, South Australia to shoot Great White sharks. I’m hoping to get a half over/half underwater picture of one of the sharks at the surface. It will be difficult as I’ll have to work from the boat or in a cage, which makes framing the shot that bit more tricky.” Matt has promised 2508 to share these images – look out for another feature in January 2018. n The Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition is at the Australian Museum in Sydney until December 10. Want to buy Matt’s work? Go to www.mattysmithphoto.com or follow his adventures on Instagram @mattysmithphoto 2508

Still Life with Panther

Meet Christine Sykes and John Svoronos, the couple holding an exhibition at Clifton School of Arts. Christine Sykes and John Svoronos met in a Liverpool cafe, back in Christine’s uni days. She dreamt of being an artist “but my study and career took over”. Fast-forward about 50 years to their retirement in Stanwell Park, to when Christine finally takes art classes, with painter Louise Ryder. “I was amazed to find that I could paint. Friends kept saying, ‘You should have an exhibition’, so I suggested to John that we have a joint one.” The couple told 2508 more: What do you admire about each other’s work? Christine: John’s work is large, expressive and always a surprise. Its vibrancy, use of colour and shade, and its monumentality astound me. John has always explored his vision with honesty and passion. His exhibitions at the Casula Powerhouse, in Canberra and Beijing blew me away with their intensity, their diversity and yet their consistency. John: Christine has an instinct for naturalistic painting, especially for colour, tone and composition.

What’s in the name, Still Life with Panther? Christine: “Still Life” refers to the genre of my painting, but even in stillness there is often movement. “The Panther” is an escarpment myth which is in our minds. It may be a delusion, but it has the power of suggestion. As such it is John’s motive for painting this series. What can we expect to see at this show? Christine: The show will highlight the differences in our work. My paintings are small, naturalistic and detailed. They consist mainly of still life paintings. There is an abundance of flowers, fruit and seashells intermingled with Chinese pottery. John: Impressions of the escarpment and scenes around Stanwell Park. My work incorporates images, words (poetry) and myths. I want to share want I have done in the wonderful space provided. n Still Life with Panther will be at Clifton School of Arts, from November 24-26. There’s a preview at 5pm on the Friday and an opening celebration at 3pm on the Saturday, call 0403 388 292. 2508

All these plants are blooming beautiful in November, writes Narelle Happ, owner of local business A Garden for Life.

1 Actinotus helianthi – Flannel Flower Popular with painters, this creamcoloured flower is prolific in the bush, growing in large drifts under trees. It enjoys a dappled light position with very good drainage. 2 Ricinocarpus pinifolius – Wedding Bush This shrub, with its true white flowers, is best pruned back after flowering to maintain a bushy habit in the home garden as this encourages many more flowers.

26 2508 NOVEMBER

3 Petrophile species – Conesticks Conesticks like a well-drained position in a sunny spot, but will also grow in a dappled position if well-drained enough. 4 Correa alba – White Correa The grey foliage has a furry texture that helps it withstand frontline coastal conditions. It’s a small shrub and can grow in full sun or part shade. Prune twice a year to maintain a bushy habit. 2508

Treat this knee injury in two stages ACL injuries should be tackled before and after surgery, writes Aaron Babb of Helensburgh Physiotherapy. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the important ligaments that stabilise your knee joint. It plays a huge role in many dynamic movements during sport and exercise. If you have torn (ruptured) this ligament, the knee can collapse or ‘give way’ when making twisting or turning movements. An ACL rupture happens as a result of a twisting injury to the knee, it is most common with soccer players between ages 18-25, however, other common causes are football and skiing injuries. You can injure other parts of your knee at the same time, e.g. tear cartilage or damage the joint surface. ACL reconstruction is normally performed under general anaesthetic. The operation usually takes between an hour and an hour and a half. The surgeon will make one or more cuts on the front and sides of your knee. Some surgeons may perform the operation by arthroscopy (‘keyhole’ surgery), using a camera to see inside the knee. The surgeon will replace the ACL with a piece of suitable tissue (a graft) from elsewhere in the body

6 went to war, 3 came home The Helensburgh & District Historical Society is collating a book on 2508 servicemen who fought in World War One. This month the society’s Mary Steenson and Jenny Donohoe present a story of the Helensburgh Hunts. John Thomas Hunt farewelled six grandsons off to World War I and sadly only three came home. The six boys, all residents of Helensburgh, were:

– usually your hamstring tendon. The top and bottom ends of the replacement ligament are fixed with special screws or anchors into ‘tunnels’ drilled in the bone. There are two very important stages in the recovery from an ACL injury where your physiotherapist will come into play. The first is pre-habilitation. This is a relatively new term and is the care and preparation of the knee before surgery. The aims of this stage are to achieve as much range of motion and quadriceps muscle strength leading into surgery to augment recovery post-operatively. Secondly, rehabilitation, which has many different stages during the recovery process. Initially, our aims are to get your swelling down as soon as possible; this will reduce pain and increase function rapidly. As the swelling improves, our aims are then to restore you back to full function and that will vary from a desk worker to a triathlete and also from individual to individual. We have seen many ACL repairs over the years and within our facilities we have state-of-the-art equipment. So find your level of fitness, give yourself time to recover and stay injury-free while you get fitter! 2508

William Henry (Bill) Hunt, Thomas James (Tom) Hunt, Francis Joseph (Frank) Hunt – three sons of George and Ellen Hunt. William Herbert (Bert) Hunt, Prescott Henry (Percy) Hunt – two sons of Negus and Rose Hunt. Charles Henry Hunt, son of William James and Ruth Hunt. The three boys who died of their wounds were: William Herbert Hunt (in 1915); and Francis Joseph Hunt and Prescott Henry Hunt, both in 1918. These three Helensburgh families paid the ultimate sacrifice of loved ones in the Great War. Their grandfather, John Thomas Hunt, was born in 1839 in Cape Town, South Africa, the son of Thomas Hunt and Ann Sutton. John Thomas migrated to Australia and married Mary Ann Brown in 1860 in Surry

Meet the Chamber’s exec

Each month, 2508 introduces a volunteer serving on Northern Illawarra Chamber of Commerce’s executive committee. This month, meet deputy president, Tanya Parry. Please introduce yourself. I am the co-founder, co-owner and business manager of two local businesses, Switched On Mechanical and Switched On Tyres. Initially a University of Sydney trained lawyer, my role at Switched On Mechanical and Switched On Tyres focuses on all areas of business management and development. I am also a mother of two young children and, with my husband (local mechanic, Brook), work to ensure that Switched On Mechanical and Switched On Tyres each remains an industry leader in automotive services. What do you personally enjoy about being part of NICC? By living and working in Helensburgh, we are already a part of this wonderful community, but being an active member of the NICC has allowed us to be more visible in the community and actively participate more for the benefit of the local area. For example, in the chamber’s various projects, with my personal favourite being the NICC initiative to install two potentially lifesaving Hills, settling in the Illawarra town of Sherbrooke in the 1870s. They were a coalmining family and lost two of their sons – Negus Edward and Frederick – to mining accidents. John Thomas died in 1926 after the Francis Great War and his wife, Mary Ann, died in 1909, unaware of the Joseph Hunt war and tragedy to come. The Helensburgh & District Historical Society has many stories like the Hunts that are being preserved in a new publication by the society. If you would like your 2508 WWI family added to our collection, please email info@historichelens burgh.org.au or call Jenny on 4294 2877. 2508

automated defibrillators at Thirroul and Helensburgh library. This project not only benefits the local community, it could also help visitors or tourists in the area. Additionally, being an active member of the NICC has resulted in valuable business connections, formed as a result of attending the monthly networking meetings or business events. How has your business benefited from being part of NICC? Both businesses continue to benefit from the valuable exposure the NICC provides. Being a member also provides an opportunity to enter the annual Illawarra Business Awards, which celebrate and recognise business excellence. Our workshop was a finalist for Excellence in Sustainability in the 2017 awards, with respect to our best environmental management practices. n NICC next meets on Tuesday, November 7 at Thirroul Community Centre. $15, with Crust catering. nicc.net.au. 2508

Club reports STANWELL PARK TENNIS Julie Adams reports.

Stanwell Park is a great environment for tennis. The courts have been resurfaced in recent years, and there is some play equipment for children within the clubhouse enclosure. Coach Gavin Hartley is available for adults and children. But to remain viable, the club needs more support! Membership forms are available at The Stanny, who very kindly volunteer to keep keys for court hire and members. Annual fees are $60 adult, $20 junior, $100 family. Casual court hire $10 per hour. Come and have a hit with friends, or join now and save our club! Annual memberships paid from November will be valid until the end of 2018. Please feel free to contact us with any enquiries! The Committee Stanwell Park Tennis Club are: President Glenda Taylor (4294 2426); Treasurer Lyn Fetherston (4294 1245); Secretary Julie Adams (42942895); and Coach Gavin Hartley (0488 261 601). 2508

VIEW CLUB

HELENSBURGH PROBUS

Publicity officer Jean Doherty reports. Our monthly general meeting is the backbone of the club. Members are expected to attend as many meetings as possible (not less than 50 percent a year, unless there are exceptional circumstances). The committee is fortunate to have a member who organises guest speakers. Over the years we have had the most interesting and inspirational speakers, covering diverse topics, from “Women at sea in the days of sail” to “Llama farming in the Southern Highlands”. A number of speakers have visited us twice; one was Faye Yarroll from Cochlear Implants. Her visits were beneficial to some members who decided to have cochlear implants to manage hearing problems. We also learned from physiotherapists about the “Stepping On” courses run by Community Health. These courses teach how to improve balance and prevent falls (not all of us were ballerinas when young). We also encourage members to speak about their interests, their hobbies and their lives. Many have taken this opportunity and how entertaining, surprising and interesting their talks have been. The Probus Club meets every second Thursday of the month at the Tradies Helensburgh. Visitors are welcome, but please first contact Jenny Mason on 4294 2032. 2508

Junior Tigers President of Helensburgh Tigers JRLFC, Greg Gaffney, reports on the club’s presentation event. The 2017 Junior Rugby League Presentation was held at Tradies Helensburgh from 2pm on October 8. As always, there was a huge turn-out. Some life members and sponsors were on hand to enjoy the day with us. This year our hardworking committee and our sponsors provided all players with a huge haul – new training gear, a shirt and shorts plus a club spray jacket – to take home. It'll be great to see all the Burgh Junior Tigers getting around town. Again, with the u6 to u9 being non competitive, each player received a trophy for the 2017 season and to all our minis, can't wait for next year. As the teams get into competitive ages we hand

out Best & Fairest (BF), Best Back (BB), Best Forward (BF), Most Improved (MI), and Coaches Award (CA). Our u10s who went up to the A grade comp acquitted themselves well, and they will be much better off for this year. BF: Daniel Wainwright & Jacob Taylor. BB: Ethan O'Neill. BF: Ryder Newton. MI: Charlie Tanner. CA: Kody Hammonds. Well done boys. Our 11-2s were semi finalists and did a great job as a North Burgh side. BF: Tye Bursill. BB: Bailey Greig. BF: Billy Bragg. CA: Leilani Havea. MI: Braeden Currey. Great stuff. The 13s had a tough year, but what stood out at the preso was that all the boys hung tough with a good number sticking together from start to finish. BF: Joshua Farrow. BB: Ryan Andrews. BF: Kayne Booker. MI: Colin El Ayoubi. CA: Raife Bursill. A top effort in a tough year. n Part 2 will be in the December 2017 issue. 2508

Prep ramps up for 2018 BMX star Kai Sakakibara details his approach to goal setting for his 2018 comp schedule. It’s been a quiet few weeks since the completion of the NSW State Titles at the start of October. 2017 was great, but I want 2018 to be better. After a little time off, I’ve been back into training working on the little things that I haven’t had the chance to work on during the season, including making set-up adjustments to my bike, technical skills, Kai with his Elite BMX and base strength Australian Champion trophy. training. Photo: Saya Sakakibara Aside from training, a big part of my time has been spent planning my movements for the 2018 season. The BMX season runs all year long – you could race from January through to December if you wanted – so it’s important that we think ahead and plan out our critical races, our training blocks, and equally important, our time off to ensure that we do not

become burnt-out from training and racing. As any athlete knows, it is impossible to be in your best shape for 12 months of the year. It is critical to be selective in the events that we want to perform well in; not just race every event possible and hope for a good result here and there. Planning is important and has to be done long before the season begins. It can actually be really overwhelming making these decisions, but a method that my coaches and parents have encouraged me to pursue is to always be goal oriented. Asking a simple question of myself – “Will doing this training / racing / event help me achieve my medium-term and long-term goals?” – makes the decision-making process a whole lot easier. If the answer is “Yes”, then it’s a no-brainer. If the answer’s “No”, I should move on or make it line up with my goals. I’m still learning how to make these tough decisions faster and more efficiently – I’m the worst at decision making! – but it’s always an interesting learning curve, making plans months in advance. You can only make the best decision based on the information you have at the time. Next year is shaping up to be exciting! Keep up to date with Saya and Kai: “Saya Sakakibara” and “Kai Sakakibara”. 2508

Coalcliff SLSC open day Coalcliff SLSC hosted an open day on October 15. The club’s publicity officer Jenelle McWilliam reports. The state-wide SLSNSW Surf Club Open Day involved SLSNSW clubs hosting a range of activities, including lifesaving demonstrations, clubhouse tours, barbecues and displays. Glenbernie Orchard, of Darkes Forest, donated apples to the club which were included in Coalcliff SLSC’s giveaway bags on the day. Sunday social golf club Beware – the crows are out pinching balls or is that an excuse? Our game was on the long weekend and daylight saving and everyone had their footy head on, numbers were down, but it was a lovely day and the boys were in fine form. Tony Prez, suffering jet lag and having lost an hour’s sleep, took out first place with 38 points. Mind you, he had two balls stolen. Mark Buckley had 37 and Johnny Brunton had 36. All won great prizes. Apparently Marky O’Connor had a moment and forgot the utensils and the condiments so he copped a bit of flak for that. We’re doing a few catch-up games due to bad weather, so the wives will be happy with that. Not! If you’re thinking about playing golf once a month, join us on the first Sunday in the month. Tradies social golf

Maintenance on a golf course is essential. A good coating of fertiliser in the spring will keep the fairways lush and green. Lime and natural fertiliser from the chicken farm are considered the best. The only ingredient missing was a good shower of rain and, on cue, at 7.30am tee-off a gusty southerly and rain arrived – perfect conditions for golf. Some golfers revel in adverse conditions: Ken Sandridge, with 43 Stableford points, Brian Taylor, with 41, and Paul Morahan, with 36, collected the Helensburgh Butchers and Gallardo’s Pizza sponsor prizes. The rest of us trudged around with the “natural fertiliser” building up on our buggy wheels and golf shoes. The big news of the day was Ken taking out the Steve McRae golf prize. The Helensburgh Driving Range prize went to Mick and he is hoping it will move him up into the winner’s circle. We will stage two games in November – on the 4th and 25th – both at 7am tee-off. The first game is the final round of the championships, so bring your best game, and remember to arrive early to allow Mick time to prepare the various cards. Local boys impress at Aussie MX titles

Stanwell Tops mates Ryder Wilson and Toby Huston represented NSW at the 2017 Australian Junior Motocross Championship in Victoria, finishing second and ninth. Ryder’s proud mum, Megan Wilson, reports. The two nine-year-old athletes were part of the NSW team at the national event, held in Horsham, Victoria, from September 30 to October 6. The two boys had earned their places at the championships after Ryder finished first and Toby second in the 7-9yrs 65cc class at the NSW State Titles, held earlier in the year. Almost 400 young MX riders took part in the 2017 Australian Junior Motocross Championship,

considered by many to be the nation’s top event for junior motocross racers. After five days of racing, the results were outstanding: a second place for Ryder and a ninth for Toby. Their results made their team, sponsors and parents very proud! To further add to the victory, the NSW rep team also took the win for most points achieved by a state at the event. 2508
