HOW A HOLIDAY RIFF BECAME A REAL BOOK John Hawkins shares the story of Googad Magee.

The Hawkins family was on vacation in late 2018, and we had only brought a small number of children’s books for bedtime reading. One evening, when our twin boys, Owen and Jesse, declared they wanted a new story I said we should write our own. We started by making up a silly name for the main character, and then riffed on what he might be doing. The boys enjoyed the process of throwing in multiple ideas, and I tried weaving them into a story with some rhyming pattern. We continued this game over multiple sessions and soon had the framework of the story. We discussed turning the story into a book and the boys got very excited about drawing all the pictures. When we arrived home, their enthusiasm had not waned. Every Saturday morning, they would wake me and tell me I had to get up and work on the book. For several months we focused on creating the illustrations. I would draw outlines, with their instructions. The boys would then colour these illustrations in using pencils stamps and textas. We cut out sections of old magazines and junk mail and glued them into the pictures. We finished many months later and uploaded

the book to an online service called BookBaby. We ordered a bunch of copies of the books and waited. When they arrived, the boys were both a little confused as to why there were so many. They had thought we would just get the one, and even seemed disappointed at the idea that it was not a single precious book. It seems mass production is not a natural idea for children. I talked to them about selling the books – they wanted to spend the money on Pokemon cards. Eventually I convinced them we could use the money to help others, via OzHarvest, a charity who work to both minimise food wastage and to feed the poor and homeless. This led to lots of conversations and I am planning to take the boys to meet OzHarvest workers to see what they do. 2508

SHARING THE JOY OF SURFING

Crawchy’s Swim School owner Mel Whiteside reports on a great day in the waves at Thirroul Beach. A crew from Crawchy’s Starfish Club and the Helensburgh Tigers and Tigerlillies, who volunteered for the first time, headed down to Thirroul on Saturday, 7 December to help out at the Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) South Coast event. There were 297 people involved – 47 brave participants, the rest volunteers. The surf was warm but a bit hectic in size, with rips making for some interesting wipe-outs. Only two local 2508ers competed this time:

Connor and Finn, both racing the conditions and having an awesome time. We started with paddle races in Thirroul ocean pool, then took on what Huey gave us in the surf. Any tips for using soft peaches and nectarines? A great school holiday project is to blitz soft peaches or nectarines in your bullet blender. You can add a sprig of mint and then pour into ice-block trays or cups. These small ice blocks can be put into other drinks to jazz them up. Use the frozen purée to make a slushy or smoothie. Pour over the top of ice-cream. Once frozen, it will keep for up to 12 months, so you can enjoy during winter as well.

What’s the next fruit you’ll be picking? January is white peach time and at the end of January after Australia Day we should start picking apples. They will be royal gala, which are a small red apple perfect for children going back to school. What are the current challenges on the farm? Water use and conservation is our biggest challenge at the moment. We’ve put in thousands of dollars worth of new infrastructure to help us save water. Every drop is precious. In particular, we have invested in electronic systems to turn the water on and off. We use sensor equipment to tell us how much water is in the soil at any particular time and how far down the soil profile the water has moved. We can see if the tree is drinking and needing water. We can’t waste a drop. We have removed a lot of trees this year in our replanting program. We have planted heritage apple trees and grafted some cider-specific varieties onto some of our old trees. The cider apple varieties come from France and England. Reducing the number of trees and mature trees that we have on the farm has made it a little easier with water demand. We need less water! It has helped us to look after the other trees. We have had good sized and big fruit, while other farms in other areas haven’t. Our fruit is tasting incredibly good and that’s because of the warm sunny days we’ve been having, along with reduced rainfall. And, whilst we still have water in our dams, we can control exactly what our trees need.

WONDER WALKS

Kate Barter, manager of Burgh Healthy Hub in Helensburgh, shares three of her favourite hikes. Bush walks are a great way to connect with family and friends, while getting fresh air and exercise. What more could you want? We are lucky enough to have a number of walks, suitable for a variety of ages and fitness levels, on our doorstep. Here are three I like.

The Coastal Track runs all the way to Bundeena too, so you can hike until your heart’s content on this track. Note: check for fires, closures and fire bans before visiting NSW National Parks. Stay up to date using the Fires Near Me app.

THE WODI WODI TO MT MITCHELL Just off Lawrence Hargrave Drive, half-way between Stanwell Park and Coalcliff, is the Wodi Wodi Track. Walking underneath the giant Eucalyptus trees is truly humbling and you can’t beat the view of Stanwell Park beach from the top, after following the signs to the Forest Walk. While there are some steps in this one, anyone over the age of five or who walks semi-regularly should be able to complete this walk, even if at a slower pace. Hike on an extra five minutes after you reach the top, and you’ll be rewarded with another great view of different local beach: Coalcliff. Note: The Wodi Wodi path splits after the first section from Lawrence Hargrave Drive. A left takes you up Mt Mitchell; the right fork carries on for a challenging trek to Stanwell Park Station.

SUBLIME POINT LOOKOUT For those looking for a high-intensity activity, Sublime Point will get your legs working and your heart pumping. You can start at the bottom at Austinmer or at the top – from Helensburgh, take the Old Highway past Boomerang Golf Course to Sublime Point Lookout. A well-maintained path weaves through what feels like dense rainforest with five pit-stop chairs along the way, and the view at the top is the best reward of all. At Burgh Healthy Hub, our social walks are a great way to see new places and meet new people. They are open to members and non-members alike and are completely free. THE COASTAL TRACK, ROYAL NATIONAL PARK For those more adventurous, or experienced, the Coastal Track is a must-do. Starting just near Otford Pantry, and Otford Lookout, a 1.5hr walk will take you to Burning Palms, along predominantly raised footpaths. If the tide is right, you can walk along the rock face and check out the Figure 8 Pools, but definitely check the tides on the National Park’s website before you go.

LEAD THE WAY! By Philip Comans

Here are my top 3 dog-friendly walks, plus where to grab a coffee en route. All are dog-friendly cafes, but do keep your dog on its lead and respect that other diners may not love your dog as much as you do. Well-loved, wellbehaved and well-trained: that’s what makes for happy pets when out in public. STANWELL PARK TO CLIFTON, 9KM RETURN Now that the long-anticipated pedestrian path has opened, a truly spectacular walk is yours to enjoy. Start with breakfast at the Palms Cafe, Hargraves Cafe, Loaf Kitchen or Uluwatu Blue in Stanwell Park then head south. Parts of the new walk are cantilevered ocean side and offer superb views. Continue over Sea Cliff Bridge and stop again for a coffee at the Scarborough Hotel if you walk that far (5.8km). Otherwise turn back at the historic 1911 Clifton School of Arts for a 9km round trip. Allow two hours for a leisurely pace. MCCAULEYS BEACH TO SANDON POINT, 1.4KM ONE WAY One of our favourite walks. Start at Corbett Avenue, Thirroul and descend onto leash-free McCauleys Beach. Frolic off-leash in the shore break and on the sand as you stroll south, ending your playtime at Sandon Point. Sit and watch the expert surfers off the Point. Make it a round trip by walking up off the beach and promenading with your pooch (on-leash) back to your car, following the footpath past multi-million dollar homes. Allow 20 minutes if you’re on a mission, or up to an hour if you take your time. HEADLANDS HOTEL TO COLEDALE, 1.3KM ONE WAY After a cold beer, strong coffee or a meal, head north, sticking to the ocean-front to walk along leash-free Sharkeys Beach. This is a truly beautiful reef beach, popular with surfers but not lifeguard patrolled. The views north are among the best in the Illawarra. Keep walking north and soon you’ll be in quaint Coledale where a great coffee, cake or meal can be enjoyed at Earth Walker cafe, or across the road at Mr & Mrs Smith. Meet the hard-working band whose debut album is out in January. 2508 reports.

It was near the end of 2019, as everyone was busy gift shopping and downloading air pollution apps, when a band 2508 had never heard of contacted us and asked to be on the January cover. Curious, we quit gazing moodily at grey summer skies and started watching a Lenores’ music video, Glencoe St. And were surpised to find ourselves on familiar ground, catching glimpses of Coles, Walker Street and Bald Hill! Turns out James Loman – lead guitarist and vocalist of these purveyors of “an eclectic cocktail of messy grunge, indie rock and surf punk” – lives in Helensburgh. And the band is about to release their debut album, Child Support, on January 3. Still, was it our lead story? We asked James: Why should the Lenores be on the cover? “For the release of the album, we are working with SAHSSI, a Wollongong-based charity that helps victims of domestic abuse and homelessness,” James said. “We are thrilled to have their support and every cent from album sales will be going to this awesome charity. We feel like this is the best way to directly influence our community and help people who need it. “As well as this, we have worked our butts off. “We have been labelled “Wollongong’s hardest working band” [according to Ronny van Dyk of Wreckless Enterprise] and have played about 85 shows in a year. We have worked tirelessly and have started to get recognised around Australia, which is mind-blowing.” Well, that was convincing. Then the Lenores proved hard to pin down for a photo. James is a music teacher, Slade Wells is a traffic controller, Daniel Morillas a test and tagger at the University of Wollongong, and Sunny Josan is a psychology student at the University of Sydney. When would these schedules ever meet? Enter James’s mum, Julie Crabbe, who stepped in and shot a series of seriously fun photos around town one Saturday afternoon (thanks Julie!). James kindly took time to answer questions.

Who’s in the band? What’s in the name? James Lomman – Lead guitar/lead vocals. Sunny Josan – Rhythm guitar/vocals. Daniel Morillas – Bass. Slade Wells – Drums. It’s just kind of a cool name haha. How did you meet? Sunny and I met in mid-2018. We met on a music app called Vampr. We then decided to meet up and jam at a small rented room in Erskineville. I wanted to start a band because I wasn’t in one at the time and I had all these songs ready to go. Where will Helensburghers know you from? I am from Helensburgh, I’ve lived here for most of my life and have grown up playing soccer and cricket in Helensburgh clubs. Describe your sound. Our sound is loud, haha. Our influences are quite varied but we usually write garage rock sort of stuff I guess you would call it. Maybe alternative rock. As a song writer, what inspires you? Life, death, people, politics, cynicism, whatever. Nothing, sometimes.

When do you find time to practise together? Most of us work, so we struggle to get together sometimes but we gig so often that it usually isn’t a problem for us. We know the songs well enough to just blast through the set on any given night. Tell us about your debut album. Our debut album Child Support is coming out on the 3rd of January. We have released a few singles leading up to the album (None Of My Surfer Friends Can Surf and Scouse). It’s going to be awesome! That’s about as much we can say without giving too much away. We have a killer recording engineer (thanks KV!) and we’ve worked really hard on it. I think that even the people who have heard our first EP and subsequent singles will be surprised how cool this album has turned out. We’ll be selling it around Helensburgh and Wollongong, all the way up to Newtown. Keep an eye out for it!

a couple of shows in March 2019 and since then we’ve been keen to travel again. Any local people or places in your music videos? Our video for Glencoe St was great and we got to show off an area that I’m proud to live in, being Helensburgh and Stanwell Park. It was basically our idea from the start to shoot around here because there are so many great locations. What are your hopes for 2020? To keep playing awesome shows. People who know us well know that we put 100 percent into each gig and they love it. We go all out and have a great time with our audience so we will just keep working hard and playing to new people. If you get the chance, come and see us live! We always get positive reviews from people who have seen our live show and we’d love new people to be a part of it.

BRANCHING OUT TO RAISE FUNDS Helensburgh Guides opened up the Guide hall last month for their annual sale of Christmas trees, stands and hand-made fairies and angels. This is the major annual fundraiser for Helensburgh Girl Guides, with all money being directly used to pay for the bills, maintenance and upkeep of the Guide Hall. Many thanks to all parents and family members who assisted with unloading and selling the trees – and to the community for your overwhelming support. The Guides will be taking a break over the school holidays until Term 1 commences in 2020. A huge ‘Bravo’ to Brolga, Kinya and all the facilitators and family members who have helped to make 2019 so interesting, exciting, and above all …. fun! 2508

HAPPY 50TH TO THE POOL! At the end of 2019, Helensburgh Pool marked its 50th birthday. No celebrations were held but 2508 did ask council for an update on the toddler pool closure. A Council spokesperson said: “We’re continuing to look at short-term options to treat the toddler’s pool water and address the water circulation issue. However, at the same time, we’re working on a permanent option that may include an independent pool filtration system for the toddler’s pool alone.” 2508 TRUE STORY Overheard on social media, Nov 26: “17 sharks spotted from the northern end of Stanwell Park beach chasing a massive bait ball.” After checking with lifeguards, a Council spokesperson said: “From early November we regularly had large schools of salmon or king fish spotted off the beach at Stanwell Park and these fish attracted schools of dolphins. There hadn’t been any beach closures due to shark sightings.’’ 2508

THANK YOU! In early November, Stanwell Park girls Gemma, Amelia and Alex shaved their heads to raise money for the Cancer Council. Hosted by the team at Uluwatu Blue (thanks Kat), it was a social Saturday morning with lots of helpers to make sure we got every last hair on their heads. Alex’s long locks were sent onto Variety where they will be reused to make wigs. Everyone agreed it was a courageous gesture and some lovely shaped skulls were revealed! Huge thanks to everyone who turned out to lend a hand on the day, cheer the girls on and to those in our community, near and far, who made donations. To date, over $3000 has been raised. Thank you for your generosity and support. 2508 THIS YEAR AT YOUR MEN’S SHED By Paul Blanksby Whether it’s greeting a new member from Coalcliff, Engadine, Grays Point or the Burgh, or working at a bench with an old mate, the Men’s Shed will have lots to offer in 2020 for men aged from 18 up. We’ll have lots of Men’s Health initiatives, giving us insights into skin checks, preventing injuries, cardiovascular disease, mental disorders, backpain, substance abuse and prostate cancer. And we’ll continue serving the 2508 Community with projects like the Glow Worm Tunnel Railway Station sign, a beautiful Australian Army Reserve Award, building play equipment, crafting holding crosses for Holy Cross Church, fauna boxes for local environmental groups and restoring historic Helensburgh machinery. And then there’s Pizza, Artisan bread or Soup days – yum. We aim to be a safe place where a man can go and find something useful to do and someone friendly to talk to. We have two workshops: one for metalwork and one for woodwork. JUNIORS HIT OUT AT AUSSIE TITLES The Scarborough Boardriders report.

The main break at Surfer’s Point near Margaret River is home to a top-level World Surf League event, so this ramped up the enthusiasm for four Scarborough Boardriders juniors as they competed in the Australian Junior Surfing Titles from November 30 to December 7. More than 250 surfers were faced with consistent 2- to 4-foot waves throughout the week, with Zahlia Short, our stand-out surfer, finishing with a 2nd in the under 14 Grommet Girls with a punchy performance on steep rights running towards the rocks on the final day. Zahlia also backed up with a 3rd place in the MR Shield Under 16 division surfing with Bodhi Simon for Illawarra Sports High. Zahlia’s younger sister, Shyla, also started strong with 1st placings in Round 1 and 2, advancing through Round 3 with a third place, then coming unstuck in the quarters, but showing a maturity well beyond her years. In the U18s junior men, Fin McLaren racked up a 14-point heat total in round 1 but that wasn’t enough to get him through with two competitors scoring 9s in a high-performance heat. In the repechage Round 2, Fin scored an 8 on a searing left with a back-up score putting him into Round 3, but once again, despite a respectable heat total of 13.90, it wasn’t enough to get him through to the quarter-finals and he bowed out. Kasey Hargreaves in the U18s junior women surfed through Round 1 with a second, then put on a searing display of power turns on a couple of the larger sets of the day, scoring a 7 and a 6 to put her into Round 3, where her campaign came to an end. n Club registration will open mid-January, watch out for announcements on Facebook and Instagram. 2020 registration for both Mini Thistles, Juniors and Seniors will open in January. Thistles Junior President Gillian Lehn and Senior President Jason Bell report.

Helensburgh Thistle Soccer Club in 2019 saw a small changing of the guard with a committee made up of some new members and some members with many years of experience helping guide the new members through the 2019 season. In our Junior club, we had 306 players with 19 teams plus 85 Mini Thistle members. We celebrated many semi-final and final victories including three Grand Final wins. We held numerous successful fundraising events, ran our first school holiday camps with coaching from our Senior club and all-round had a fantastic year. In our Senior club, we had 180 players with 10 teams across our District League, Community League and Women’s competitions. In a year that was full of promise and excitement the club had one of its most successful years, with eight out of the 10 teams playing finals football. For the first time, we were Club Champions in District League: our Youth Grade won the Minor Premiership and the Grand Final; Reserve Grade won the Minor Premiership and lost in a penalty shootout in the Grand Final; and First Grade finished second in the league but unfortunately lost in the second week of the finals. Our Amateur Cup First and Reserve Grade won the Club Championship and both made the grand final. Our HOGS played finals in our Over 35 Division 1 and Over 45’s Division 1. Both our wonderful Women’s teams had a solid year with the Division 5 playing finals and our Division 3 just missing out on finals. In our highest football played at the club, we were very successful in some individual awards at the Football South Coast Awards: District League Youth Grade Luke Millar won Youth Grade Player of the Year and the Golden Boot Award; Reserve Grade Reggae Rowley won Reserve Grade Player of the Year and the Golden Boot Award; and First Grade Addison Grinham was Top Goal Scorer. First Grade Coach Brad Boardman was nominated for Coach of the Year. We would like to congratulate all involved with the club in 2019. The wonderful and exceptional committee, players, coaches, managers, volunteers and all of our dedicated sponsors who support us year in and year out. 2020 registration for both Mini Thistles, Juniors and Seniors will open in January and our District League will be holding trials from Tuesday, 14th January at 6.30pm for all three grades. 2508
