WELCOME
MINISTRY OF TOURISM AND LEGAL AFFAIRS It is my pleasure once again to welcome you to Experience Dominica. This publication, like the previous ones, invites you to experience Dominica: the nature, the culture and the adventure that is the Nature Island of the Caribbean. These pages give us the opportunity to delve into the true spirit of the Nature Island. From our hot sulphur springs to our invigorating waterfalls, from our cool refreshing rivers to our picturesque black volcanic sand beaches, from our hidden escaped slaves mountain paths to our historic old mills; I invite you to discover Dominica and experience the beauty of its hidden gems. If that were not enough, we recently launched the Waitukubuli National Trail, a 115 mile amazing awe-inspiring hiking trail that traverses the entire island, from north to south, including mountains and valleys, rivers and streams, ocean coastlines as well as unspoilt rainforests. Through the unique 14 segments, experience several of the most fascinating points of interest throughout the rainforest and embody countless experiences in one. Each segment of the trail ends in one of our unique communities. I invite you to sit back and enjoy these amazing pages and the experience which is Dominica.
The Hon. Ian Douglas Minister of Tourism & Legal Affairs

SIMPLE FACTS
Simple Facts CAPITAL Roseau POPULATION 69,017 LOCATION AND SIZE Dominica is located between Guadeloupe to the North and Martinique to the South at 15º 26’ N latitude and 61º 21’W longitude. The island is 751 sq. km in area. TIME ZONE Atlantic Standard Time (GMT -4) CLIMATE Visitors to Dominica should expect plenty of sunshine interspersed with intermittent rainfall. The island’s annual temperature averages 27°C or 80.6°F. Frequent rainfall cools the tropical heat, nourishes the island’s extensive rainforest, and feeds its rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. On the coast, the average annual rainfall registers 178mm, but in the interior that figure is tripled. Dry season is January to April and rainy season is July to October. LANGUAGE English is the official language of Dominica, however a large portion of the population speaks Kwéyòl, which is a mix of French, Carib and West African indigenous languages. A few northern villages use a distinctive English dialect called Kokoy.

Planning your wedding is all about your dream and, of course, your budget!
Experience Dominica

Brides and grooms are abandoning the traditional ceremony to say “I do” in exotic locations, with “just the two of us” or with family and close friends. Couples are discovering that ‘destination weddings’ can actually be more economical. In Dominica, we specialize in creating the dream wedding for the unique and adventurous couple. That’s you! Do you love adventure, nature and the outdoors? Dominica offers it all with no crowds, and in a friendly, unspoiled environment. Combine wedding, honeymoon and an adventure vacation. Tie the knot on a wild Atlantic black sand beach; on a rock in the middle of a rushing river, under a beautiful cascading waterfall or on a catamaran or yacht – all in glorious sunshine or in the moonlight and under the stars at your choice of hotel or restaurant. Many resorts and hotels in the “Nature Island” offer wedding packages, which include a wedding coordinator who will assist with the legal details. bridal bouquet and groom’s boutonniere of exotic tropical flowers, transfers to and from the airport, choosing the perfect location, celebration dinner for two, breakfast in bed, with even a couple’s massage to top it all off. Professional wedding coordinators offer various packages to make your day a dream come true. Why not throw in some island tours for you and your guests? If you have travelled all the way to this wild tropical island of adventure, surely everyone will want to explore it. Whatever suits your fancy, a wedding coordinator can arrange it all. Their local knowledge is invaluable. After your special day, what about the honeymoon? The beauty of getting married in Dominica is that there is an enormous variety of places to stay and things to do. Stay at an upscale resort, a boutique hotel, a beach cottage, an eco-lodge in the mountains or on the wild east coast. There is diving, whale watching, waterfalls and rainforest to explore, hiking to the Boiling Lake, or along the Caribbean’s only long distance hiking trail, the Wai’tukubuli National Trail. Experience one of our cultural festivals including Carnival and the Creole Music Festival. Some hotels offer a 4x4 rental vehicle included in their honeymoon package. Destination Weddings.com estimates that a honeymoon averages roughly 14 percent of a typical wedding budget. Combining your wedding and honeymoon can help you save for your new home or another wonderful vacation with us. Dominica has been rated among the “Top 20 Most Romantic Places in the World to Tie the Knot!” by the Observer, UK and as one of the “Top Hot and Steamy Romantic Trips” by the Guardian, UK. Visit www.dhta.org and www.dominica.dm for information on coordinators, hotels and resorts offering wedding packages, legal requirements for getting married and all the wonderful things to do while in Dominica. 17

Dominica has a myriad of adventures and sightseeing spots to keep the most active holidaymaker busy for weeks. There is something for everyone to enjoy, whether it be a light hike to pristine waterfalls, relaxing on a deserted beach or a fun-filled river tubing ride down one of Dominica’s crystal clear rivers. Dominica is known for its mountainous terrain and lush rainforest covering approximately two-thirds of the island as well as three hundred and sixty five rivers with waterfalls scattered across the island. There is the exciting Titou Gorge where you can swim into a cave which opens up to different chambers with a wonderful waterfall in the depths of the cave. Or perhaps you want to swish through the trees on a ziplining adventure; rapel down a waterfall or just relax in one of the invigorating hot sulphur pools. Jump on board the trolley train which takes you around our capital, Roseau, and enjoy the bustling street activities as it makes its way through the winding roads of this quaint and pretty town.

ROSEAU Botanical Gardens Established in 1890, the Botanical Gardens were originally conceived to encourage the supply of properly propagated seedlings of varied tropical crops to the island farmers. Now it is divided into two sections – the ornamental/exotic plant section and the economic plant section. In addition to cricket matches, the gardens are used for a range of activities as well as relaxing for a picnic under the trees.
Fond St Jean Fishing Village
Dominica Museum This is the perfect place to learn about Dominica’s rich history and vibrant culture through photos, exhibits and fascinating artifacts. Historic Walking Tour of Roseau SHAPE – “Society for Historic Architectural Preservation and Enhancement” – developed a selfguided tour map to discover the beautiful historic town of Roseau. Best appreciated on foot, the centre of Roseau still boasts the best-preserved collection of urban vernacular in the Caribbean. Allow a minimum of one and a half hours for the tour. Morne Bruce High above the Botanical Gardens is a beautiful vantage point with a large white cross where one can over look Roseau and the valley. Morne Bruce was a signal station for Fort Young with old garrison ruins. Take Jacks Walk in the Botanical Gardens or drive up the hill, immediately south of the Roseau Public Cemetery.

ROSEAU VALLEY Boeri Lake This is the highest crater lake in Dominica with the trail starting at Freshwater Lake. The path offers spectacular views of the Atlantic coast and back towards the lake. It is featured in several Carib myths and legends and is reputedly home to a Nessie-like monster! Titou Gorge A delightful spot at the start of the hike to Boiling Lake. Swim up the gorge against the current until you can stand up inside. Those who do so are rewarded with a dramatic little waterfall. Trafalgar Falls This father and mother pair of majestic falls, tucked away in the Roseau Valley, can be viewed by a stroll to a platform. Climb to the base of the falls to swim in the cool waters of the mother falls. After heavy rains, the flow of water can be strong, and the rocks are very slippery so a guide is recommended. The left side of the father falls is unsafe for exploration. Wotten Waven Hot Sulphur Pools After a hike, relax and enjoy a soak in the different hot sulphur spas in the area which consist of different outdoor sulphur pools. INTERIOR Emerald Pool Reached by a half-mile loop trail. It is accessible via Seg 5 of the WNT. Emerald Pool is actually a waterfall-fed pool that appears bright green in the tree-filtered sunlight. Climb into the cool, crystal clear natural pool and relax, reveling in the beautiful, calm surroundings. Jacko Falls Jacko Falls is hidden under the rainforest where nature rules supreme. The walk is only 5 minutes and you will enjoy a wonderful refreshing swim.
Penrice (Spanny) Falls A short hike through a rainforest leads you to the first of two waterfalls, which cascade 40m into an invigorating pool - perfect for a dip. It is a stiff climb up to the second waterfall but worth it. PORTSMOUTH & WEST Fort Shirley in the Cabrits National Park The Cabrits National Park is a protected haven of forest, swampland and beaches, found on a peninsula formed by the twin peaks of an extinct volcano. Cabrits is connected to the mainland by an emergent wetland, particularly important for migratory birds. Fort Shirley, a large 18th-century British Garrison, once housed 600 soldiers. It is the island’s premier historic showpiece and has undergone major recent renovations. Cannons can still be found guarding the spectacular view of Prince Rupert Bay. Visit the Interpretation Centre and read the outdoor panels to learn more about this majestic garrison. Indian River Enjoy a relaxing guided tour on this enchanting river. The prolific vegetation and the always-interesting river wildlife make for a fascinating trip. Syndicate Parrot Reserve Dominica is home to two unique, indigenous types of parrot. The Imperial - known locally as the Sisserou - is Dominica’s national bird. The Jaco is smaller than the Imperial and can be found at lower elevations. These parrots can be best seen in the wilds of the Syndicate Reserve. Keep an eye and ear out as you follow the trail along the rim of the Picard river gorge. The Kalinago Territory Once found in most Caribbean islands, the Kalinagos live a simple communal life, carrying on many of the traditions of their ancestors. The Kalinago Territory consists of about 3,000 inhabitants on the north-eastern coast of Dominica, spread over 3,700 acres with eight hamlets. Visit the Kalinago Barana

NORTHEAST & EAST Bwa Nef Waterfall Situated between Vieille Case and Pennville, this waterfall is located in a tall narrow canyon tucked away from view. A short hike goes up the river and across several streams until you reach the beautiful, tall, cascading waterfall. There is a large impressive boulder perched over the fall. Chaudière Pool or Chaudron A 20-25 minute hike takes you to a small waterfall with a deep pool of clear, cold and crisp water. You can slide down a natural chute formation and the cliffs around allow for diving or jumping off into the water. Cold Soufriere After an easy hike from the Northern Link Road at the extreme northern end of the island, you reach several small bubbling pools releasing volcanic gasses. Despite the appearance of boiling water and the smell of sulfur, the pools are all cold.

Red Rocks Just east of the village of Calibishie, is another of the world’s true beauty spots. An easy 15 minutes walk from the main road, this headland of red rocks are actually clay sculptured by years of erosion which offer beautiful coastal and mountain views. SOUTHWEST & SOUTHEAST Coal Pot in Geneva The “Coal Pot” produces handmade soaps and pure massage oils using traditional methods with locally grown additives and products. It is located within the grounds of the former Geneva Estate, originally a very large sugar plantation which produced sugar, rum and molasses. Soufriere Catholic Church Completed in 1880, it has become one of the most photographed sites in Dominica. Inside is a colourful mural painted by Lennox Honychurch portraying village life. There is a natural hot water pool in the sea just in front of the church and you can sit in the hot water and enjoy the view. Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve (SSMR) SSMR was established in 1998 to protect and preserve the spectacular underwater reefs. The bay is an extinct volcanic crater whose walls drop to an uncharted depth with active underwater fumaroles and expansive coral reefs…excellent for diving and snorkeling.

The Heart of Dominica Written by Lennox Honychurch,
For centuries, the wet luxuriant interior of Dominica was a mysterious place of forest spirits and wildly luxuriant rain forest, visited occasionally by hunters and woodcutters, builders of Kalinago canoes and escaped slaves. The planters and settlers stuck to the coast. It was uncharted territory. Early maps of the island left the interior as a vague space of imagined mountains and rumoured lakes. Not until aerial photography did anyone really have an accurate idea of what was inside the knotted interior. Then in 1956, the first motorable road was opened across the island. There had been an earlier attempt in the 1910’s to tame this forested heartland. A dynamic but eccentric British Administrator, Sir Henry Hesketh Bell, had an imperial dream of opening it up to British coffee planters. The “Imperial Road” that he constructed petered out at Bassinwill, (or Bassinville as it is sometimes written), which was renamed ‘Bells’ in his honour. Although his scheme was a grand failure, local small farmers took over the land and established a thriving agricultural community that you can visit today. Bars and refreshment stops dot the roadsides and there is always watercress, oranges, tannias, dasheens and anthurium lilies laid out for sale. 32

This heart of Dominica is lodged between the two largest volcanic massifs on the island: Morne Trois Pitons, named after its three prominent peaks, and Morne Diablotin, named for the Black Capped Petrels (Pterodroma hasitata) that once inhabited its craggy slopes. The vast deposits of heated ash and rock ejected from these volcanoes thousands of years ago fused together to form this landscape. Hundreds of streams carved their way through the rock, creating deep river gorges and dozens of waterfalls. There are beautiful pools to explore. Here one can swim through diamond clear water while viewing crayfish and turquoise coloured ‘lorche’ darting between the smooth boulders at the bottom. The Pagayer and Laurent tributaries cascade down the rocky ravines and cliffs towards the main Layou River, forming popular waterfalls such as Spanny’s, Penrice Falls and Jacko Falls. Across the forest to the west are the Saltoun Falls and to the east the famous Emerald Pool, cradled between mossy cliffs at the northernmost end of the Trois Pitons National Park. The Layou is Dominica’s largest river in every sense, drawing water from the widest watershed and running the longest course from the eastern flanks of Morne Diablotin to the Caribbean
Sea in the west. For the fit and adventurous, a swim and scramble river hike down the Layou gorges is an awesome experience. Two sections of the Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT) pass through this area. Segment 4 winds through the rainforest from Laudat, while Segment 5 takes you past the Emerald Pool and down the Castle Bruce Valley. You can pick up information at the WNT visitor centre near Pont Cassee. Nearby, you start the exhilarating hike up to the summit of Trois Pitons, Dominica’s second highest mountain. This part of the island is the heart of “Maroon Country”, the base for enslaved Africans who escaped from the coastal plantations between the 1760’s and 1834 to live free in the forested citadel. The most famous maroons in this area were Balla, Jacko and Congo Ray. You can visit the site of Jacko’s camp on a plateau high above the Layou River, accessed by the Jacko Steps cut into a sheer precipice. Overlooking Bells is Morne Negre Mawon, the mountain of the Maroons, thought to be the site of Chief Balla’s camp. At this heart of Dominica, there is both the heart of nature and the heart of heritage with new adventures at every turn. ■

With its vast network of trails – Dominica is the dream destination for all hikers, and yes, there are trails suitable for beginners as well as veteran trekkers. Before there were roads in Dominica, the original trails were a necessity by foot and horseback – a way of escaping enslavement, for food gathering, travelling between villages, and for recreation purposes. Some of Dominica’s most popular hikes are in the Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT) which traverses the island and is broken up into 14 segments. This trail is 115 miles long (200km), running from the south of the island at Cachacrou, to the nor thwest at the Cabrits National Park. Each segment has its own unique set of challenges and levels of difficulty, with
historic, cultural and natural points of interest along the way. The Boiling Lake hike is an arduous journey through the rainforest environment of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The trail takes you up and over ridges and peaks before descending into the Valley of Desolation, an otherworldly environment of stark oranges, yellows and reds, violent fumaroles and steaming rivers. Morne Trois Pitons National Park and Morne Diablotin are strenuous climbs but great fun and really wor th the effor t for their awesome views on a clear day. If you are looking for more accessible hikes, then try those that take you to the numerous magnificent waterfalls and rivers that Dominica offers in abundance.

ROSEAU & ROSEAU VALLEY Fresh Water Lake Duration: 1 hour (loop) Difficulty: Easy – Moderate Site Pass : Yes Fresh Water Lake is located beyond the village of Laudat, in an old volcano crater at the foot of Morne Mccaque. Due to its high altitude - 762m above sea level - it is often shrouded in mist and a great way to escape the heat of the city. The trail is clear and travels the circumference of the lake with panoramic views of the lake and the southeast village of Grand Fond and Rosalie Bay. On a clear day, you can see the island of Marie-Galante from the north east. The trailhead is beyond the visitors’ building and across the dam wall. Middleham Falls Duration: 1 hour (one way) Difficulty: Moderate Site Pass: Yes There are two trails to Middleham Falls, Laudat or Cochraine. If you choose Laudat it is well marked and is part of the Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT). The trail from Cochraine is less frequently used and runs past Tou Santi, or ‘Stinky Hole’, a fissure full of bats with a stench of their droppings. From Laudat the hike is a pleasant one through the heart of the rainforest, but you may consider hiring a local guide to ensure that you don’t get hurt or lost. The waterfall is magnificent and one of the tallest on the island with a 80m narrow stream drop. The pool at the bottom is deep and well worth a scramble down for a refreshing dip. Make sure that your electronic equipment is well wrapped up from the spray of the falls. The trailheads are just before you approach the village of Laudat on the left and Cochrane, approached from Old Mill Cultural Centre, Canefield, Roseau
Boiling Lake Duration: 3 – 4 hours (one way) Difficulty: Difficult Site Pass: Yes Boiling Lake is said to be the second largest of its kind in the world - Dominica’s most popular and strenuous trail. It is a flooded fumarole approximately 60m in diameter with a magma chamber beneath the surface, heating fresh water to boiling point. The trek to Boiling Lake consists of lush rainforest and beautiful mountain flora before descending into The Valley of Desolation, a wide valley containing hot streams, bubbling mud and violent steam vents. Do not attempt this hike without a local guide. The trailhead is located at Ti Tou Gorge, Laudat. Morne Anglais Duration: 2 hours (one way) Difficulty: Difficult Site Pass: No This is a steep hike and in some places quite tricky to climb through deep mud and tree roots. The trail is divided into sections and so can be quite difficult to follow. A local guide is advised. At the peak, on a clear day, you can see from Roseau all the way up to Salisbury on the west coast, Grand Bay on the south, and Delices in the east – well worth the hike. The trailhead is in the village off Giraudel at an abandoned water catchment. Tour Guide Taking a Break

Boeri Lake Duration: 45 minutes (one way) Difficulty: Moderate Site Pass: Yes Boeri Lake is the highest mountain lake on the island with an elevation of 853m above sea level. It is in the crater of an old volcano located beneath the summit of Morne Micotrin within the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. If the weather is clear, views of the Freshwater Lake and the village of Grand Fond can be seen at high points on the trail. It can be slippery during the rainy season, so be careful. To get to Boeri Lake, follow the same direction as to Fresh Water Lake, but turn left at the fork instead of right to Freshwater Lake. You will see bamboo water pipes along the way, which are channeling water from hot water sources. This is a great spot to freshen up after your hike. The trailhead is at the end of the road from Freshwater lake. 37

PORTSMOUTH & THE WEST Penville to Capuchin – (Seg #13 WNT) Duration: 3.5 hours Difficulty: Easy Site Pass: Yes An easy segment of the Waitukubuli National Trail, that travels along the north coast of Dominica. It begins at the remote Delaford Estate and ends at Canna, near the village of Capuchin. This area was settled by the Amerindians and later by the Capuchin monks. It has a small cannon battery at its most westerly point where, on a clear day, there are great views of the Saints and Guadeloupe. The terrain of this hike varies a lot through banana plantations, crossing small rivers, forest areas and over ridges. Buses run infrequently to and from Portsmouth, so make arrangement for transportation at the end of your hike. The trailhead is located at Delaford Estate - Penville 38
SOUTHEAST & SOUTHWEST Wavine Cyrique Duration: 2 hours Difficulty: Difficult Site Pass: No Wavine Cyrique falls is notable for disgorging from the cliff onto a sandy beach approximately 18m below. The trail is clearly marked by a sign post ‘Ravine Cyrique’ on the main road, that leads onto a concrete road, then onto cultivated fields and steps which wind down towards the coast, ending at the top of a cliff. To reach the beach one has to transverse a rope ladder and/or hang on to roots, branches and ropes to get down the steeper part of the trail. The trail narrows in some parts (with ropes well placed to help), widening nearer to the shore. The gorgeous black sandy beach is often visited by nesting turtles. The waterfall is a great secluded spot for a picnic. This is an advanced hike and potentially dangerous. It should only be attempted with a guide. The trailhead is located at Riviere Cyrique Village Victoria Falls Duration: 1 hour Difficulty: Difficult Site Pass: No Victoria Falls can be found at the southern outskirts of the village of Delices, usually identified by a signpost. Drive down the dirt road where you can park for a small fee. Although the hike is short, a guide is required as the trail is not clearly marked. It makes several tricky river
crossings and involves a few awkward scrambles over steep boulders, especially at the end. Since the source of this river is Boiling Lake, the water is full of minerals and therefore not suitable for drinking. The trailhead is located at the southern end of the village of Delices. Soufriere to Bellevue Chopin – (Seg #2 WNT) Duration: 6.5 hours Difficulty: Moderate Site Pass: Yes The second segment of the Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT) is a long hike, part of which was once used by Maroons who camped in the Bellevue Chopin area. The trail starts with a switchback out of the Soufriere Sulphur Springs making a fairly steep ascent to the village of Tete Morne. Make sure you fill your water bottle at the roadside taps as you stroll through the village. You will need it as the hike gets harder. After the village you will pass through agricultural land and probably meet farmers out tending animals or working the land before you enter into the forest for a fairly steep descent down to Grand Bay village. Then a 45 minute ascent on the Morpo Road - a farmer’s feeder road. On reaching the summit, take a refreshment break on the benches - you will have deserved it. Enjoy the wonderful views of the south coast and Grand Bay, You then enter the forest, on the final stretch, with a few more short ascents and on to your final destination with a long descent to the community of Bellevue Chopin, famous for it’s organic farms. The trailhead is located at Soufriere Sulphur Springs.

INTERIOR Morne Diablotin Duration: 6 – 8 hours Difficulty: Difficult Site Pass: Yes The hike to the 1,447m summit of Morne Diablotin is great fun, but difficult and treacherous. It involves a relentless uphill hike, scrambling up steep rocks, with a lengthy climb through branches and roots. For the most part the trail is well defined. At the summit, on a cloudless day, the views are spectacular of the Cabrits, Portsmouth, Picard, Melville Hall Airport Runway and the north-east coast and its villages. Before starting the hike it is important to be prepared to get wet and muddy. At the summit it is often windy, and can be quite cool if there is cloud cover. Bring something to protect you from wind and rain, ensuring that you have a change of clothes. Look out for Jaco and Sisserou parrots on this hike . Do not attempt the hike without a guide. The trailhead is located on the road to Syndicate Visitors’ Centre, on the right.Turn off the Roseau-Portsmouth road at Dublanc, about 13km south of Portsmouth.

Wotton Waven to Pont Casse – (Seg #4 WNT) Duration: 5 hours Difficulty: Moderate Site Pass: Yes This trail is segment 4 of the Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT) and begins from the village of Wotton Waven, famous for its sulphur springs. The trail leads to Trafalgar, known for its twin falls, and then climbing steeply to Dominica’s highest village, Laudat, the starting points for hikes to Boiling Lake, Freshwater Lake, Boeri Lake and Titou George. From Laudat the trail travels down to the vistors’ building at Middleham Falls, and then passes through mostly primary rainforest and many large gommier and chatagnier trees onto the trailhead of Middleham Falls. The trail continues to meander, with ropes placed to help with some long descents and ascents. You will encounter several river crossings on this trail as you pass through the Middleham Estate which skirts the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, winding your way through beautiful rainforests. You then emerge at Pont Casse round-about in the shadow of Morne Trois Pitons and onto the Waitukubuli National Trail headquarters. The trailhead is located in Wotton Waven Village

Pont Casse to Castle Bruce – (Seg #5 WNT) Duration: 4 hours Difficulty: Moderate Site Pass: Yes This fairly easy hike is Segment 5 of the Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT), which gently descends with a few steep inclines and lots of river and stream crossings. The hike follows a historic route that, in the 18th century, was used by the indigenous Kalingago and Maroons (run-away slaves). More recently being used by people travelling from the east coast village of Castle Bruce to Roseau. The hike begins at WNT headquarters, travelling down into the rainforest. About one-third of the way you pass through Emerald Pool where you can pause for a refreshing dip. On the second part of the trail there is the Belle Fille River, also with tempting pools, and the trail’s suspension bride. The final stretch is through farmlands and down into the village of Castle Bruce and the beach. If you do decide to swim in the sea, exercise caution because there are strong currents and no lifeguards. The trailhead is located at the Waitukubuli National Trail Headquarters. There are many more trails that Dominica has to offer which are not listed in this edition of Experience Dominica magazine. We suggest that you ask your local tour guide about other “great hiking adventures”.

A New Direction for Sports in Dominica: The Waitukubuli Trail Cross By Clement Rabess and Betty Perry-Fingal, Directors of the Nature Island Environmental Trust Dominica proudly declared the official opening of its unique national trail in May of this year. The Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT) meanders for 115 miles across the length of Dominica. The trail features Dominica’s verdant landscape, contrasting terrain, bountiful rivers and intact eco-systems. From its conception in the early 1990’s through to it completion and opening in 2011, the WNT’s supporters have believed that the trail could become a major component of Dominica’s tourism product and act as a foundation upon which investments could be built. With this in mind, the Nature Island Environmental Trust (NIET), a newly formed NGO, started looking at how the WNT could contribute to tourism that is centered around hiking, cross-country touring, trail-running, ultra running, adventure racing and eco-challenges. Seeing the rapid growth of trail running around the world, NIET’s directors decided to foster this new direction by establishing The Waitukubuli Trail Cross (WTC). Supported by the Discover Dominica Authority, the Trail Management Unit and the private sector, NIET held the first ever Waitukubuli Trail Cross on June 8, 2013. The successful inaugural event saw sixteen participants crossing from the Village of Trafalgar to the Trail Head
Quarters at Pont Cassé along segment 4 of WNT. The diverse group of participants included serious athletes as well as dedicated hikers and featured three women and one 15 year old. The course covered a distance of 6.6 miles and had a total elevation gain/loss of 2630/1755 feet and an average slope of 11.7% /-12.3%. The winning team crossed the Finish Line in 1 hour and 53 minutes, an impressive feat. According to race director, Clement Rabess, this was a wonderful start and bodes well for future plans. In the long run, the annual series is expected to include domestic, regional and international events. The second domestic WTC is being planned for November of 2013. NIET hopes to stage the first regional WTC in the first quarter of 2014. NIET envisions this inaugural trail cross as just the beginning event for the larger, long-term trail project that can lead to an internationally recognized event. NIET also would like to see the Trail Cross events lead to more participation by Dominican youth in trail running, helping them develop a deeper appreciation for their home, the Nature Island. By promoting the trail to a wide audience, NIET hopes to contribute to community tourism all along the trail’s route. ■

Whale Watching
Photos by Images Dominica
With an abundance of deep water close to shore, Dominica is known as the whale watching capital of the Caribbean. 16 species of marine mammal make our waters home or are transient to other regions. Whale watching began at the Anchorage Hotel in the late 1980s continuing into the early 90s with the late Derek Perryman putting the island on the map as a whale watching hub. Pride of place goes to our resident population of approximately 200 sperm whales, mothers and calves. Juvenile males remain with the family pods until they reach adolescence at around 9 years old, after this they migrate annually. Our visiting males migrate from the Azores every November, and remain until late March to mid April. It is these regular pods that have put Dominica firmly on the map as the place for people to regularly see Sperm whales on vessels licensed for the tours. All vessels carry safety equipment, have working marine heads and directional hydrophones
46
so the guides, and you if you wish to, may listen to and track these wonderful and little studied giants. They are the most social of the great whales and forming tight family bonds they are sometimes seen “loggingâ€? at the surface, rolling around in close physical contact with each other. Females average 15m and males at maximal size are around 21m in length, Females give birth every 4 to 8 years making them the slowest reproducing mammals on the planet. Diving to depths of a mile or more below the surface they hunt for and feed on deep water squid for up to an hour at a time, being mammals they also need to breathe air. This rest period between dives is when whale watchers may see the largest toothed creature on the planet. Although seen throughout the year, the best time is during mating/calving season November - April. Boats depart usually on Wednesdays and weekends unless by charter. â–

Turtle Watching Under cover of darkness one of the oldest animals on the planet crawls its way laboriously out of the surf onto a beach. This is a labour of love, if she is bearing eggs for the first time, it will be the first time she has set foot on dry land since hatching, in some cases 18 years ago. Males of any species will never touch dry land once leaving the beach of their birth. Waiting on the beach at some incredibly early hours are a group of turtle watchers. They’ve gathered to watch a very special moment in the life of the turtle and for the humans possibly something they may never see again. All lights are off, until the female has dug her nest and goes into a trancelike state to deposit as many as 120 eggs, then lights can come on and people can watch this incredible spectacle. Dominica plays host to three species of turtle, the Hawksbill, Green, and Leatherback. The best places to view nesting turtles are at Bout Sable beach in LaPlaine, and Rosalie Resort in Rosalie. Both areas have wardens and conservation measures to ensure as many eggs laid in a season are relocated to higher ground to hatch. On scuba dives, hawksbills are frequently seen on reefs. They are the only creature capable of digesting sponges. Green turtles eat sea grasses which give their fat a greenish tinge, and their name. Leatherbacks are the largest turtle with a whopping maximum weight recorded at 916kg. Leatherbacks dine exclusively on jellyfish in the worlds oceans; Juveniles leave our shores and ride currents to the Arctic where jellyfish can attain sizes of up to 1 ton. ■Experience Dominica

CONTENTS DIVING
Diving
After a recent dive, I overheard a diver tell his buddy “that was the biggest anemone I have ever seen in my life!”. I admit I missed it, but those are the sorts of things one hears after most dives - that was the biggest sponge, the most amazing colour, friendliest turtle, most awesome wall. Dominica remains one of the hardest places in the region to get to, but once you’re here...it’s worth it. There are three distinct types of diving to be found along our western (Caribbean) coastline – plunging walls of a submerged crater in the south, shelf and dropoff of the central reefs, and reef slope and dropoff in the north. For many a week isn’t enough.
48
NORTH WEST
It’s the quiet moment when every- body is on WEST the boat and nobody says a word for the first two minutes; each lost in the kaleidoscope of vibrant life and colour they have just witnessed, trying to gather the words to express the feeling, the emotion. Then conversation seems to explode – that is Dominica diving.
SOUTH WEST
NORTHWEST Five Finger Rock (Advanced) Location: the Cabrits Marine Park This playground for squirrelfish, angelfish and flounders is an experience you will never forget. A must-see for those who love watching aquatic life in action. A more difficult dive than some others, but well worth the effort. Pole To Pole (Easy) Location: Portsmouth This dive site has a very different atmosphere from most of our dive sites. It is under the Cabrits cruise ship pier where one can dive between the giant wooden poles covered in sponge life. This is an easy dive that is suitable for all levels with a maximum depth of 15m. Hidden at the bottom and on the sides of the poles are some of the rarest critters around, seahorses, batfish, flying gurnards, sand eels and much more. This dive is a fantastic and atmospheric dive during the day, but it really comes to life at night when the critters come out in even greater numbers! Sharks Mouth (Moderate to Advanced) Location: Prince Rupert Bay This dive site is named for the numerous sponges that look like a shark’s mouth. The descending slope is covered with a delightful mixture of brightly coloured hard and soft corals and sponges. Occasionally there is a mild current present.
Orange Seahorse
Toucari Bay (Moderate) Location: Portsmouth Toucari Bay has many exciting tunnels to explore. Two of the tunnels, 8m and 14m long, provide exhilirating swim-throughs through shoals of French grunts. The reef then drops to 33m where it is home to large shoals of mahogany snapper, crabs and frogfish. This is an excellent site for both day and night dives. You are bound to see eels, rays, trumpet fish, octopus, lobster, squid, puffer and parrot fish in abundance. A large variety of spectacular coral can also be found in this area.

WEST Maggies Point (Moderate) Location: Mero This dive starts at the edge of a huge seagrass bed, a great place to find stingrays and turtles feeding on the bottom. The main reef is composed of spur and groove formations with a huge rock outcrop cloaked in massive sponges, colourful feather-stars and whip corals. Check under the rocks and in crevices for coral crabs, lobster, spotted and green morays. The outer edge of the reef extends below 30m to a sandy plateau. For fish-watchers, this site is a perfect place to see schooling fish, stingrays and unusual critters. 49
DIVING
Nose Reef (Moderate to Advanced) Location: Mero The mooring is in 15m on a shelf dominated by sea plumes and sea rods. Descending from the base of a shallow wall at 20m you will pass lovely varieties of azure vase sponges which range in colour from pink to purple, to fluorescent light blue and orange elephant ear sponges. The vertical part of the wall is dominated by sea whips and red gorgonians. At about 24m you will find a nose shaped promontory jutting into deeper water (hence the name). Also seen on this dive are nudibranchs, seahorses, flamingo tongue snails, turtles, schooling fish and huge snappers swimming by. This is a great first dive of the day.
Rina’s Hole (Easy) Location: Salisbury If you are looking for colourful and vibrant sealife then diving Rina’s Hole is a must. This site is a great place to swim with all kinds of marine life, and where you are able to explore a large underwater cave. Take time to observe different types of eels, stingrays and the occasional nurse shark as they swim in and out of the nooks and crannies that make Rina’s Hole so exciting. This spectacular dive is further brightened by its white sandy bottom, the shallowness of the site, and the rays of sun which seep through from the surface illuminating giant anemones, sea plumes and a wide variety of sea fans, with shoals of chub a common sight.
50
Whaleshark Reef (Easy) Location: Salisbury Located on the south drop-off of the Grand Savanne flats, Whaleshark Reef starts at 17m and plunges to about 40m. Its vertical face is a garden for giant barrel and brilliant yellow tube sponges and other hard coral, all teeming with colourful tropical fish. A photographer’s paradise for capturing arrow crabs, shrimp and spotted flamingotongued snails. Also look out for large barracuda, jacks and Spanish mackerel. SOUTHWEST Champagne Reef (Easy) Location: Soufriere This dive explores the beauty of the bubbles and hot spring that make up Champagne reef and usually includes a safety stop from where you can see the entire reef. An easy dive for any level of diver as the water is calm with light currents. You can find frogfish, flying gurnards and seahorses quite easily. Squid can often be seen. This dive is especially spectacular at night when huge crabs and lobsters come out to play. Champagne Reef is easily accessible from shore and many people snorkel here. Coral Gardens North – also called Dangleben’s North (Easy to Moderate) Location: Soufriere This dive site can be combined with Danglebens Pinnacles for a nice mix of sites. Starting off in about 12m of water
it is a fairly easy start that quickly puts you on a healthy reef. Heading out from shore the reef drops off into deep water with very dense patch reefs, some sandy patches and lots of volcanic substrate. This diverse topography means that one can find almost all features of Dominica dive sites. There is pelagic activity on the deeper corners, some truly beautiful sponge formations of every colour, feather-stars with feeding turtles everywhere. Suitable for all levels, this area can be done repeatedly and looks different every day!
L’Abym – La Sourcier (Easy) Location: Soufriere L’Abym is a 457m wall that descends into the sea from a cliff above the surface. The first shelf starts at about 8m, getting steeper as you descend. A great opportunity to enjoy mingling with seahorses, turtle, barracuda and frogfish. The most unusual thing about this dive site is that although it is a massive wall, it is suitable for all levels of diver with seldom any current. L’Abym truly sums up the dramatic topography of Dominica.
Craters Edge (Advanced) Location: Scott’s Head This is the last divable point of the volcanic crater that creates all the dive sites from Scotts Head to Scotts Head Pinnacle and West Bank. Sticking out into the current it is only possible to dive on current free days. While it does connect up to Scotts Head Pinnacle via a ridge at about 70 ft it is worth diving on its own, usually making two turns around it – one at 80ft and one at 50ft. Huge sponges stick out off the wall, and an entire ledge of orange sponges faces the current end. Pelagics love this site and cero, barracuda, turtles, sennet, horseye jacks, yellowtail snapper and rainbow runners are also regulars here. Occasionally seen are huge black jacks and schools of tuna. If you can tear your eyes off the action and look closely, seahorses are regularly spotted. Definitely an exciting dive and a little current brings it all to life!
Scotts Head Pinnacle (Moderate to Advanced) Location: Soufriere Scotts Head Pinnacle is one of the island’s most famous dive sites, with divers regularly requesting repeat visits! The dive begins on Swiss Cheese, a large rock formation home to the well-known Soldierfish Cave. This swimthrough (not actually a cave) teems with soldierfish and grunts that seem to form a barrier, parting briefly to allow you to swim through. You reach the Pinnacle after crossing a flat area of coral encrusted rock formations. Another picturesque swim-through at 11m bisects the pinnacle, bringing you to a steep wall on the other side and inside the volcanic crater, which falls off to more than 37m. The swim-through is full of blackbar soldierfish, grunts and lobster. The wall is dominated by deepwater sea fans and other colourful gorgonians.

The Lionfish problem is an issue that is never going to go from the region, they now inhabit from North Carolina to Brazil. Dominica is used at conferences and seminars as an example of how a small island with limited resources has been extremely proactive in taking this from the reef to the table. We have shown that reefs can be effectively policed and populations managed. Cookoffs, and school programs keep the issue in the public consciousness. Eat a Lionfish, save the reef.

There is one official Marine Reserve in Dominica – the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve (S.S.M.R) located in the south. A fee is in place to support this reserve. The fee is US$2.00 per recreational dive if your dive is in the confines of the Marine Reserve. Your local dive shop will collect this. The Marine Reserve protects the marine resources of Dominica for all users and ensures that Dominica will always have a thriving marine environment. Under the management plan of the Cabrits National Parkk in
Portsmouth, there are regulations in place to ensure the sustainable use of the marine resources in the Cabrits area. There is a modern dive emergency response system with a hyperbaric chamber at the island’s main hospital in Roseau. The Dominica Water Sports Association (DWA) organizes an annual diving extravaganza in July called Dive Fest. Dive conditions are excellent; there are many great events to enter, prizes to win and entertainment galore!

YACHTING
Yachting in Dominica
Written by Lennox Honychurch, Photos by Lennox Honychurch The arrival of pleasure yachts seeking sunshine and warm seas during the northern winters can be traced back to the late 19th century. Wealthy US and Canadian tycoons and their families sailed down from the eastern sea board of North America in their large sailing yachts, manned by captains and crews who waited on their every need. This was disrupted by World War II, but once the war was over the yachting industry grew rapidly. The development of Nelson’s Dockyard at English Harbour on Antigua created a base from where yachties could fly in and charter vessels for their cruise through the Lesser Antilles. On 23 January 1953, yachting history was created at Portsmouth. Ann Davison (1914–1992) was, at the age of 39, the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean single-handedly when she entered Prince Rupert Bay after sailing from the Canary Islands in her 23 foot boat Felicity Ann. Miss Davison was aiming to make landfall in Antigua but storms pushed her south and she eventually touched land at Prince Rupert Bay. From the 1960s a yachting boom began in the Eastern Caribbean as small self-sailed yachts were joining the bigger charters. On Dominica, Prince Rupert’s Bay became the main haven for these yachts, and beach bars 54
and services started to develop along the shore. By the 1990s, and into the new millennium, a new generation of young Portsmouth entrepreneurs involved in the yachting industry transformed the business. Today Prince Rupert’s Bay is receiving great reviews and the results are seen in the increased visits during the yachting season, which lasts from October to June. People involved in servicing the yachts and giving tours up the Indian River formed PAYS, Portsmouth Association of Yacht Security, which in conjunction with various local agencies have placed moorings, provide tours, entertainment, laundry and food services and security around the historic harbour. To the south, yachts began anchoring in Woodbridge Bay using the services of the Dominica Aquatic Club, long since defunct. The construction of the deepwater harbour in the 1970s put an end to this. But by then, the Sisserou Hotel, Castle Comfort Guest House and Anchorage Hotel had shifted the focus to Citroniere, south of Roseau. The Newtown waterfront as far as Loubiere has blossomed as a yacht anchorage and small hotels, bars, restaurants, shops and scuba dive centres now cater to the yachting crowd. ■

One of the great things about Dominica is that accommodation is available all around the island and is not centered in one particular area. This means that staying in two, three or even more different locations makes natural and historic sites more accessible without the need for long journeys every day. With careful, selective planning, it is very easy to create a tailor-made holiday that suits your interests as well as your budget. And with a broad selection of accommodation options, from forest cabins to luxury hotels and eco resorts, you can decide just how close to nature you would like to get. Interesting accommodation is that which has been thoughtfully designed to fit harmoniously with the surrounding environment, which may incorporate elements of the outdoors, and which may also be eco-friendly, making use of sustainable materials and natural power sources. Practical accommodation may be located close to services such as boat jetties, dive shops, restaurants, duty free stores, education and research centres, hiking trails, rivers or tropical parks and gardens. Budget accommodation comes in the form of homey B&Bs, self-catering apartments, simple cottages, camping and even Mongolian gers. For those seeking a little more luxury and elegance, Dominica has a small but impressive selection of world class and award-winning eco resorts, boutique hotels and deluxe villas. Dominica is a great escape; a peaceful and natural corner of the world where you can relax, recharge, and enjoy some outdoor adventure. Accommodation options provide everything you need to make your holiday on the Nature Island both a comfortable and a memorable one.

DINING
Dining The Creole influence using local fresh herbs and spices make Dominican dishes highly flavourful and aromatic, particularly their fish, poultry and meat dishes. Specialties to look out for on the menu are local goat, land crab and crayfish. Be sure to ask for the catch of the day which could be tuna or mahi-mahi (locally known as dolphin) – normally served just hours after being caught! Some wonderful Creole dishes include, crab back, callalloo, sancoche, saltfish with coconut milk, accras (made of the titire fish or saltfish), bakes (fried dough), braf (a smoked meat and fish soup) and pelau (highly seasoned rice and chicken). Dominica offers an abundance of freshly grown vegetables and fruit, with local juices always available - a haven for vegetarians and naturalists alike. Taste the heart of Caribbean cooking – try everything at least once. There is a dish to suit everyone’s taste and pocket. As you explore Dominica – down the coast and through the valleys, let food be part of your adventure, discovering our wonderful creole cuisine. Eat, drink and enjoy! NIGHTLIFE
Nightlife HAPPY HOUR by Nikima Royer Jno-Baptiste Happy Hour is defined by dictionary.com as ‘a cocktail hour or longer period at a bar, during which drinks are served at reduced prices or with free snacks’. Here in Dominica, the Nature Island, we are no different - we relish our Happy Hours. After all, when you are on the Nature Island, surrounded by nature, culture, and adventure, there is no reason not to be happy and more importantly, there is no reason not to share the joy. Our Happy Hour is somewhat traditional, like anywhere else in the world. However, in my humble opinion, even our”traditional” is unique. To begin... The location. There are any number of hidden gems with picturesque views of the amber sun setting; with the salt laced wind washing over you on the coast , or the fresh mountain breeze enveloping you in the interior where you can sit back and kick your feet up. Hotel bars, guesthouse garden gazebos, eco inn river spots, beach bars, village rum shops (our local name for village bars). Name your flavour and you will find a location to suit.
Now the food. At any location you will have the opportunity to sample complimentary freshly made plantain chips, Lion fish ceviche, or organic guacamole. These tantalizing tastes and the wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen urge you to delve deeper into the creole cuisine that is being offered. Finally the drinks. At all of our wonderful Happy Hour locations, while taking in the ambiance and munching on local fare, you can sip on your choice of local rum punch, made from whatever fruit is in season, a cold local beer, any number of spirits, or my personal favourite…anything with coconut water. So... while sipping on “anything with coconut water”, munching on fresh food made just for you, at one of our beautiful secluded beaches, watching the glow of the setting sun enflame... what was the reason for not being happy again... Hmmm... I thought so! Add some music, add some friends, keep the drinks flowing, and continue well into the night to truly have yourself a Dominican Happy Hour.

Our pre-lenten Carnival street festival is spontaneous and unique, retaining many African masquerade traditions. On the Monday and Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday (Feb/ March), the island comes alive with local carnival music and the free release of energy by revelers…. This is Mas Domnik. The “Jazz N Creole” music festival features exotic rhythmic blends. Popular ‘fringe’ events begin during the week, climaxing in a wonderful family event on Pentecost Sunday at historic Fort Shirley. The annual hiking festival Hike Fest is now paired with the Jazz n Creole festival… Come enjoy “Hike & Jazz!” a wonderful combination in May/June! Dive Fest promotes Dominica’s diving, rich marine assets and top-side attractions. Come on over in July!! The Nature Island Literary Festival & Book Fair is another annual summer event, promoting literary arts and publishing. It also links related art forms including video, visual art and music. The Independence Festival marks the island’s freedom from British colonial rule. All the folk festival winners meet on November 3rd for The Cultural Gala – a grand festival showcasing folk dances, traditional singing, storytelling and the display of national wear. Independence is

While visiting, you are sure to find something unique with or without a shopping list. Look out for the intricate basketwork of the Kalinago people calabash bowls, coconut and tree fern carvings, sculpture, handmade jewellery, batik fabric, natural soaps, essential oils, coffee, herbal bush teas, hot sauce, rums and rum punches. Everyday items can be found in our supermarkets, 7-11s and pharmacies which are all well stocked and easy to find. A visit to the Roseau New Market, particularly on Saturdays, is a must with its colourful array of freshly grown produce, exotic tropical flowers and the aromas of local herbs and spices wafting through the air. In August be sure to check out “Shop Dominica” which offers great discounts on just about everything.

REAL ESTATE
Real Estate Most properties in Dominica have registered title which makes the process of buying easier. That does not mean there are not pitfalls. Here are a few tips to follow to avoid those pitfalls when buying that dream property: OWNERSHIP Before putting your offer in writing, check that the person who purports to be the owner is indeed the owner and the sole owner, as joint ownership requires the agreement of all parties. TITLE Ask for a copy of the title documents and from that you will see whether there are any caveats (these usually pertain to mortgages). If there is no title document, the land is unregistered and you should consult a lawyer before going further. SUBDIVISION If buying a plot from a larger portion of land, check that the owner has obtained planning permission to sell the smaller piece, i.e. to subdivide. If not you may not get planning permission to build your house.

BUYING A HOUSE If buying a house and have any concerns about the quality of construction, obtain a structural survey. Unless this is specified, when your attorney tells you that he will obtain a survey, he maybe only referring only to a land survey. ALIEN’S LAND HOLDING LICENCE If you are buying more than three acres for business or one acre for residential purposes you will need an Alien’s Land Holding Licence. If the parcel you wish to buy is large, it is very unlikely that you will get a licence if you only intend to put a residence on the property. Since closing will be conditional upon you getting permission to buy, your offer must reflect this. DEPOSITS A deposit should not be given to the vendor. You may run into problems, for example, if there is a caveat on the title, because the seller has a mortgage from the bank; on completion there may not be enough funds to satisfy the bank. Assuming everything is in order, you can now put your offer in writing.
