Hello readers! I’m thrilled to be onboard as the new editor of Abode. Originally from Christchurch, the travel bug took me to Auckland, London, and a lot of other places in between. I believe that the journey to building a new home is an intrepid adventure, with all the ingredients for a great story. I can’t wait to share some of these stories with you!

After two years at the helm, our much-loved editor Anna Scaife is leaving to pursue other projects; including taking on the role of editor of our sister publication, Family Times. We’re not letting go of Anna completely though as she will still be with Abode as a contributor.

Summer is almost here. And this year perhaps more than any other we are collectively craving the season. The sunshine? Yes! The sense of optimism it brings? Absolutely! An end to this strange and trying year? You bet!

The extra time spent at home has given rise to an upturn in home improvements, as holiday budgets are being redirected towards staycations.

I have a busy home life with two growing sons and our best memories have come from time spent together on the beach. Last summer my obsession with homes extended beyond four solid walls as we discovered camping – and we’re looking forward to exploring some great destinations around New Zealand this summer.

In this issue, we have a superb variety of homes for you to enjoy – from a light-filled zen paradise to a family’s first build and a semi-retired dream by the sea. We explore what it means to have a Healthy Home and how a subdivided section resulted in two dream properties. We see the unique combination of steampunk and Japanese minimalism and discover some townhouses with unshakeable strength.
