he Symphony Volunteer Council (SVC) would like to welcome you to its 42nd Decorators’ ShowHouse  the Cherokee Road Estate. As in years past, proceeds from the 2018 ShowHouse will benefit the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. This Decorators’ ShowHouse is dedicated to the memory of Mike Griggs, our longtime SVC Board member, ShowHouse treasurer and friend. We especially want to thank our homeowners for graciously volunteering their home to be this year’s Decorators’ ShowHouse. Our decorators have spent countless hours designing and bringing their visions to life in each room of the estate. We appreciate their talent, teamwork and inspiration, as well as all the time

they have invested into this year’s ShowHouse. Of course, support from our business partners and advertisers is always vital to the success of the Decorators’ ShowHouse. Our dedicated SVC members and ShowHouse volunteers bring all of the details together in order to make the event exceptional. We want to commend them for all their hard work and extra effort. As always, the city of Mountain Brook has provided outstanding assistance, cooperation and encouragement. Please enjoy the ShowHouse and the Symphony Shop. Consider having lunch in the Tea Room while you are here. Once again, thank you for your support of the 2108 Decorators’ ShowHouse and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra!

am honored to welcome you to the annual Decorators’ ShowHouse, a wonderful tradition for the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. We are glad you are here today and hope that you enjoy your visit. This beautiful home is located on Cherokee Road in Mountain Brook and sits on 2 acres, has five bedrooms, six bathrooms and a pool. The ShowHouse would not be possible without the hard work and tireless efforts of our Symphony Volunteer Council. Thanks to their dedication, we are celebrating more than 40 years of the Decorators’ ShowHouse. I want to thank the members on behalf of the Symphony boards, musicians and staff for making the ShowHouse an annual community favorite. The Symphony Volunteer Council plays a vital role, and its contributions to the Symphony endowment and annual fund have surpassed $2 million. To have such a generous volunteer group is a luxury we are grateful for each day. The time, talent, energy and financial support provided to the ASO by these dedicated members is tremendous. We do all of this, of course, to support the amazing Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Thanks to the Council’s support and the Orchestra’s leadership, we can impact the lives of more than 25,000 children and 100,000 patrons annually. The energy we feel each day is a testament to the product that we have created thanks to the Council and your involvement as a guest at this year’s ShowHouse. Once again, thank you for joining us at the annual Decorators’ ShowHouse. C H E R Y L E C A P L IN G E R D

he 2018 Decorators’ ShowHouse is dedicated in memory of Mike Griggs, a longtime Symphony Volunteer Council Board member and Decorators’ ShowHouse treasurer, who passed away on Nov. 26, 2017. Mike served as president of the SVC in 2014-15. At the time of his death, he was serving his second year as treasurer of the SVC, having previously served in that same position for three years from 2009-12. For the past five years, Mike was a member of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s Endowment Board, repreM IKE GRIGGS senting the SVC’s $2 million investment in that fund, which was largely raised through Decorators’ ShowHouse profits. Other positions Mike held on the Symphony Volunteer Council Board over the past 10 years include past president, membership vice president and chair of the Guest Artist Hospitality committee with his wife Linda. In addition, Mike and Linda served as treasurers of the Decorators’ ShowHouse for the past nine years beginning in 2009 after they retired from the Southern Company. Mike and Linda received the Dr. Sandra R. Apolinsky Volunteer Service Award from the ASO in 2013. Mike was a 1974 graduate of the University of Alabama and was employed for 34 years at Alabama Power/Southern Company. He served on the boards and as treasurer of Alabama Power Corporate Headquarters Energizers and SCS/SNC Retirees and was active at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church. Mike enjoyed traveling and attending college sports events with Linda. Mike was an active SVC Board member for the past decade, and his involvement and presence at meetings, the ShowHouse and other events will be greatly missed.

Determined to create a positive environment for his patients, Dr. Ronald MacBeth, owner of Shades Creek Dental, teamed up with Heidi Core Interior Design LLC to answer that question. Core begins each project with an exploratory interview with her client to identify the motivation that will drive the design of their space. Dr. MacBeth’s reigning priority is his patients experience at his office. “I want [my office] to have a relaxing effect,” Dr. MacBeth said. “Going to the dentist is a very vulnerable event. You get a huge emotional response when you start talking about working on people’s teeth.” “Designing a commercial space is a team effort,” Core added. “The designer, dental team, contractor, and client all have to collaborate.” As the designer of this particular team, it was Core’s responsibility to guide the project. Part of her duties included collaborating with local artist Ashley McCullars, who began creating

large scale art more than 10 years ago when she needed new art for her home. McCullars started crafting custom pieces for her friends and co-workers shortly afterward and has been creating beautiful pieces ever since. After seeing her art on display at a local market, Dr. MacBeth commissioned her for the art in the office. After months of collaboration, the front lobby of the recently opened Shades Creek Dental is now a mellowing combination of cream and Maya

Pops of color draw your eye to the abstract art along the walls, and the smell of fresh coffee wafts through the room from the well-stocked coffee bar positioned beneath an artistic rendering of a mountain-range. “It’s not just about how a space looks and feels though,” Core said. “It’s about the functionality, as well.” Core worked closely with the dental team to incorporate their equipment into a completely integrated design. “On opening day, everything has its place from the front lobby to the

sterili ation area to the lab.” ith the ambiance and environment of his office perfected by the work of Heidi Core and her team, Dr. MacBeth began thinking of other ways to help his patients. “You remember mostly how you felt in a situation not necessarily the information you were given.” ith that in mind, Dr. MacBeth leverages technology to achieve a stress-free environment for his patients. patients calm during their procedure. Aware of his patients’ busy lives, Dr. MacBeth has made it a point to help reduce the number of visits his patients have to make to his office with the C R C crown milling unit. alking up the entry stairs, you will arrive at an inviting area outfitted with unique chairs and ottomans that create a bold look with deep comfort. This fully outdoor furniture is fashioned from acacia wood for the frames and Sunbrella regatta rope in a distinctive weave for the body of the chairs. Two handmade glazed ceramic cubes, with red tops and sides on a metallic base, add refreshing color, while the outdoor throw pillows soften and connect the look of the cubes and chairs. Don’t miss the Adirondack chairs with hideaway ottomans that provide seating for a closer look at a relaxing game of croquet down on the lawn.

he living room serves to represent the eclectic style that Christopher Architecture and Interiors embraces with all their projects. As a focal point from the foyer, the rich, monochromatic hues were selected to create a sense of southern elegance. With a focus beyond the overall aesthetics, the design intent was to curate a room that exudes relaxation away from today’s busy daily life and technology. It features a gathering of four upholstered chairs surrounding a cocktail ottoman positioned in front of the beautiful limestone fireplace. Grouping the chairs together, the arrangement encourages conversation among family and friends. Featuring a combination of textures, antiques and a unique collection of art and accessories, the living room welcomes you to come visit, sit and stay a while.

he bedroom and bath were inspired by nature and the natural beauty of spring in the South. A palette of pale blue and white with accents of gold and soft earth tones, as well as hand painted walls, create a feeling of tranquility. The combination of various textures — which include linens, velvets and cotton — with natural stone and gold accents add interest to the room.

his home office reflects the personal interests of the homeowner with an, “I’d rather be cycling, hiking, climbing, snowboarding, etc.” theme. The artworks throughout this space represent the owner’s love of the outdoors and highly prized, personal treasures of prior adventures and accomplishments. Featured among them are the delightfully entertaining and wildly successful climbing and winter sports figures of Floridian sculptor Ancizar Marin. Peruvian artist Huallpa captures movement and excitement with his colorful, abstract painting of bicycles. The classic French poster “Cycles Gladiator” has a wow-factor in both scale and the figure’s beauty and presentation. Each artwork has been thoughtfully designed and framed in conservation-grade materials because “if it’s worth framing, it’s worth preserving.”

In the guest bedroom, we balanced the drama of dark moody green and blues with warm metals of gold and bronzes, all on a backdrop of downy feather white. Contemporary art and small furnishings are balanced with antique pieces and traditional forms. Invite your guests to their new favorite suite.

he colorful, abstract print draperies with hues of corals and greens are custom made and set the inspiration for this room. After entering through the unique arched doorway, grab a book from one of the bookcases. Then, take a seat in one of the comfortable chairs adorned with custom tailored pillows in a gorgeous cut velvet floral fabric. The ceiling is painted the same neutral gray color as the walls to complement the beautiful Oushak rug, which creates a pleasant setting to read or study. A writing desk at the large windows makes for a great view to encourage some creative writing. The botanical art and curated objects in shades of green surround the room for a sense of bringing nature inside.

room with a view always makes a perfect writer’s retreat. Wanting this space to be relaxing and inspiring, Holly used ethereal colors and a mix of clean textures with metals and metallic finishes to give this room another world feeling. The custom sofas have been upholstered in a Crypton fabric (because all writers drink red wine) and are the perfect length to curl up and relax while contemplating the next chapter. To keep toasty on chilly nights, while dreaming up the next chapter, Holly created a throw out of vintage Donghia fabric in a warm orange. The Mid-Century French cane chairs, that belonged to Holly’s grandmother, have been refinished in a custom champagne gold finish and were recovered in a luxurious Highland Court Marine velvet. Relaxing shades of turquoise, cobalt and teal, pop against the soft canvas of Farrow and Ball’s Slipper Satin walls and work to create rhythm and harmony with the artwork within the space. The rug anchors the seating area by defining it a separate place to relax. No writer’s retreat is complete without a bar. An art-deco bar, complete with everything Hemingway might need, is right at hand. Any writer worth their salt uses a real typewriter. A vintage 1946 Smith Corona helps set the tone for the room and automatically has you wanting to put ink onto paper.

his full bath beckons any guest to retreat for a hot shower or a restful soak in an English garden inspired decor. The bath is complete with a full vanity and large mirror for dressing, as well as plentiful storage for guest towels and toiletries that makes “Le Think Tank” a tranquil relaxing environment. Wanting this space to be reminiscent of a walk through a English countryside garden, Susanne used Farrow and Ball’s Dix Blue as the wall color to mimic the blue hues seen in the English sky and Elephant Walk as a neutral to add warmth to the existing “white” surfaces and accent wall color to work to create rhythm and added interest to large wall space and mimic appointments found in a English garden. The custom shower curtain draws the eye into the space to become the focal point of pattern and interest mimicking that of a cobblestone wall covered in a spray of meandering blooms complete with tranquil birds resting on a perch. The curtain is crowned and hung from an antique wood and metal decorative art piece that imitates and repeats the English floral pattern.

he formal dining room, elegantly set for Sunday brunch, is a feast for the eyes. Spring has sprung, with rich hues of teal, lime, brown and cream. The windows are framed by chocolate velvet and teal dupioni draperies. The table is set with Limoges china, sparkling crystal and flatware and whimsical vignettes that delight young and old alike. Chocolate, shield-back Duncan Phyfe chairs frame the hummingbird with its delicate grace, reminding us that life is rich and beauty is everywhere. A custom designed, hand built buffet with Taj Mahal granite top and gothic metalwork is great for storage, displaying prized pieces or providing additional service space. Look for the original artwork created by one of Tuscaloosa’s young new artists.

he butler’s pantry is a perfect reminder of Southern hospitality and great for the host/hostess requiring space to store all the “good stuff.” Company is coming, so what better reason to pull out the good china, crystal or silver for a beautiful, creative presentation and share a good meal with family and friends? A pass-through space connecting the kitchen and dining room, the pantry has abundant cabinets for both storage and display. Prized collections shine through the glass doors of the upper cabinets while drawers and base cabinets house linens, serving pieces and additional silverware. The beautiful granite counter tops can serve as additional buffet space or a coffee station with gourmet desserts.

Premium teak wood contributes ideal contrast for the occasional table and the console table which will age to a beautiful gray over time. The Brown Jordan Fremont group has blended sling fabric with a formal frame on the dining chairs and table design for outdoor use in any climate. This blend of materials speaks to a desire to mix luxury and function with ease of maintenance and use.
