The cover photo captures a scene from my flight from Khabarovsk to Harbin after graduating from Russia. I witnessed the clear blue sky with flowing white clouds resembling mountains, while below them were lush mountains and a winding river, serving as the China-Russia border. Known as the Heilongjiang in China and the Amur River in Russia, this river unites people of different skin colors and cultures who share its waters.
The earliest inhabitants along the Heilongjiang were ancient Siberian peoples. During the Qin and Han dynasties(221 BC - 220 AD), nomadic ethnic groups such as the Sushen, Xianbei, Mongols, Khitans, Jurchens, and Oroqens inhabited the region. Some of these groups later migrated to the Central Plains, establishing their own regimes and profoundly influencing Chinese history.
In the Qing Dynasty(1636 - 1912 AD), Heilongjiang became the official name for the region, initially serving as a place of exile for criminals.
In 1683, the Heilongjiang General was established to govern the Heilongjiang River basin. The Qing court later engaged in military conflicts with the Russian army, resulting in the Treaty of Nerchinsk (1689) after two battles at Yaksa. This treaty clearly defined that the territory of the Heilongjiang River basin, below the upstream tributary of the Gorbicha River and south of the tributary of the Erguna River, belonged to China. However, the area around the Ussuri River remained a disputed territory. In the first half of the 19th century, Tsarist Russia gradually infiltrated the middle and lower reaches of the Heilongjiang, establishing multiple strongholds and promoting immigration. Through the Unequal Treaty of Aigun (1858) and the Treaty of Beijing (1860) with the Qing Dynasty, Tsarist Russia forcibly annexed approximately 1 million square kilometers of land in Outer Manchuria (north of the Heilongjiang and east of the Ussuri River). Since then, the Heilongjiang River and its tributary, the Ussuri River, have served as the border between China and Russia.
Xiaosheng Lu was born and raised in Guangdong until the age of 18.
Following his passion for architecture, he embarked on a three-year journey to Northeast China.
Later, he had the opportunity to participate in a study abroad program and spent two years studying and living in the Russian Far East.
