Your Car
hoosing the right car for you, can be a difficult decision and one that you should not undertake lightly. You may have an idea of the car you want but when you come to test drive it you may find that it actually doesn’t suit your needs or it might not live up to your expectations. It is therefore, best to keep an open mind when looking for a car, perhaps make a shortlist of the cars you would like and do some research to find out what other drivers say about them, before test driving them and making your final decision. Reading expert car reviews will give you a great insight into various good and bad points about the car, but in some cases these vary widely across the board so don’t rely solely on them, you can’t beat getting in the car and driving it yourself to know if it’s the car for you.
1) Type of Car Firstly you will need to decide what kind of car you require to cater for your accessibility needs. Can you transfer into a car easily and store your wheelchair safely in the back or do you need a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV)? If so, do you want a drive-from wheelchair vehicle that allows you to get straight up to the wheel via a ramp without you having to transfer or move from your wheelchair, or do you simply require a WAV so you can travel as a passenger. This then brings the question if
you would like to travel as an up-front passenger or in the back. The second thing you need to consider is what kind of car you would like. For many people a car is a reflection of their personality, so you need to decide what cars you would happily drive and what cars you definitely wouldn’t consider. Would you be embarrassed driving a pink car or would you be happy that the colour would turn some heads?
2) Adaptations There are over 400 adaptations available to ensure your driving experience is as comfortable and safe as possible. The adaptations available include • Hand controls, such as electronic accelerators or push/pull devices to action the accelerator or brake • Left foot accelerators for individuals who have limited mobility in their right leg • Steering wheel balls that assist with steering to give you more control • Attachments to allow you to reach standard controls in your car such as the indicator or lights • Electric person hoist that physically lifts you from your wheelchair into the driver’s seat • Easy release handbrake or electric handbrake, operated at the touch of a button This is just a small sample of the adaptations available, to get a clear idea of what you need you must speak to an
adaptation installer to discuss your needs or visit a Mobility Centre where you can have an independent assessment with an occupational therapist and a driving instructor who can determine the controls best suited for your needs. Be sure to look into the cost implications, many of the adaptations are free with the Motability Scheme but some adaptations will cost. It’s also important to remember that adaptations are not suitable for every type of car, therefore you should speak to your installer about which cars are most likely to work with your required adaptations.
3) Small, Medium or Large Consider the size of car you need, if you have a family you may need a large car or even a people carrier but don’t forget to check the spaciousness of the vehicle inside – this can avoid too many sibling fights – and the boot space as you want to be sure it can accommodate family-sized luggage for a holiday. If you only require a car for nipping around town to visit friends or going to the shops , then you should look into the excellent and economical options available for small city cars, you would be surprised how far your money can go without compromising on style.
4) Fuel Consumption For most people this can be a major factor in choosing a car. With fuel prices on the

ever-increasing spiral that they appear to be this should be something you take great consideration over, particularly if you use your car a lot. It would be advisable to take some time to work out your average mileage and also look into the benefits of choosing petrol or diesel. There are some very economical cars on the market today that offer a great mpg.
5) Safety Everyone wants to feel safe and secure in their car and if you have a family this may be even higher on your priority list. You can check how a potential car scored in the Euro NCAP crash tests, visit www.euroncap.com to get a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance. In addition to this, ensure you find out if the car is fitted with an immobiliser, an alarm and anti-theft devices, this will add to your peace of mind. There are also many additional safety packages that you can add with some models, including lane departure warnings and distance control.
6) Style and Comfort Even the most practical and frugal of us still want a car that exudes a bit of personal style. If you have a passion for cars you will probably have an idea of the make or model of car that you want, but be wary not to opt for style over substance. Feeling comfortable in your car is of great importance, if you spend a lot of time driving you do not want to end up complaining of back or neck ache from an uncomfortable driving position.
7) Cost As one of the major purchases in your life, whether you are buying or leasing, you don’t want to enter into your choice lightly and more importantly you don’t want to leave yourself out of pocket at the end of each month. Calculate everything from your advance payment, monthly payments, insurance costs and fuel costs to accurately work out if you can afford it. There is no point in stretching yourself uncomfortably and adding to financial worries.

If you are a parent or guardian of a child aged three years or above who receives the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance, you can order a car on their behalf.

You don’t even have to be a driver to lease a car through the Motability Scheme as you can add two named drivers for free and a third for an additional cost to drive the car on your behalf. These named drivers can be

There is no upper age limit for those leasing a car through the Scheme, however drivers under the age of 25 are restricted to cars with an ABI Insurance Group of 16 or lower and with a power output of 115bhp or less (this does not apply to WAVs). Only one driver under the age of 21 may be permitted to drive the car; this can be the disabled person themselves or a named driver.

“There are over 2000 cars available to lease through the Motability Scheme” You will find a vast array of vehicles to suit every lifestyle, from compact city cars or large estate cars to wheelchair accessible vehicles. A wide variety of adaptations are also available through Motability to ensure you achieve the safest and most comfortable driving and travelling experience with your vehicle. Some of the more substantial adaptations are an additional cost and you can find a list of prices for these on the Motability website www.motability.co.uk. There are approximately 450 cars available through Motability that cost no more than your weekly allowance and there are around 150 cars that actually cost less than your allowance, allowing you to use the money left over as you wish. Many of the cars on the Motability Scheme are available with no Advance Payment but if you wish to widen your pool of choice you can choose from a variety of more expensive cars that do have an Advance Payment attached to them. This payment is a one off lump sum that covers the price difference between the amount your allowance covers and the overall cost of your chosen car.
What is included in your lease? Joining the Motability Scheme has a long list of benefits for disabled drivers,
you don’t just get a new car, you get an entirely worry-free package that includes the following: • You get a brand new car of your choice every three years • Insurance is provided • Regular servicing and maintenance provided by your dealer • Full breakdown assistance provided by RAC • Annual tax disc provided and sent directly to you • Worn or damaged tyres will be replaced by Kwik Fit at no extra cost • Damaged windows and windscreens will be repaired or replaced at no extra charge • 60,000 mileage allowance over three years • Wide range of adaptations available at no extra charge The only things you will be responsible for paying for are your fuel consumption, any optional extras (eg. leather seats, sat nav), any adaptations that require an additional payment, and parking/speeding/ dangerous driving fines.

Choosing your car The Motability website is packed with information to help you make an informed decision on which car would be best suited to your needs. It includes an in-depth search function to help you narrow down the most suitable cars for you. This search will also locate dealers in your area that you can visit to discuss your options with a Motability specialist. Once you have decided on your car of choice, the Motability specialist will place the order online, give you an estimated delivery date and you will be sent an acceptance letter from Motability containing your Personal Identification Number that you will use to collect your car.
Financial Help If you cannot afford the type of car you require or the adaptations needed, Motability may be able to assist you financially. They do have a lot of demand for financial help but they do try their best to ensure as many people as possible receive the help they need. Fiat 500 The epitome of fun, no one can resist the retro styling of the very popular Fiat 500. This Italian city car comes in a vast range of colours and can be personalised exactly to your individual tastes – at a cost of course. This cheeky three door car is an obvious choice for city driving, its petite size and tight turning circle are perfect for squeezing into spaces and manoeuvring in and out of busy urban traffic. Available in an 875cc two-cylinder TwinAir engine, a 1.2 litre petrol engine and a 1.3 litre Multijet diesel, all offer economic driving but the 875cc exceeds in this area as it delivers 68.9mpg and has CO2 emissions of just 95g/km, making it free from road tax. Steering is light and the car is fun to drive, with little road noise even at higher speeds. The dashboard is painted the same colour as the outside of the car (just as in the original 500 of 1957) and there is even more opportunity to customise the interior with patterned seats. If you are considering a supermini, you are not buying one for the space and practicality it offers, so it will be no surprise that the rear seats are a little on the small side for adults and the boot space is minimal, however most models have split folding rear seats and the space for the driver and front passenger is perfectly adequate.
MINI Cooper The MINI Cooper is the ultimate small car to own, fun to drive, stylish and it holds its value like no other car in this class. Responsive and smooth to drive, the MINI Cooper is a joy to race around town in and performs well on the motorway too, the only complaint is a little road noise at higher speeds. Deceptively spacious inside with plenty of leg and headroom, the rear seats will comfortably accommodate two adults. The boot doesn’t offer a huge amount of space but you can easily fit a couple of weekend bags in there and the rear seats fold down on a 50/50 split to increase the space. The Cooper comes with CD player, air-conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, remote central locking and alloys as standard and moving up to the Cooper S you get sports seats, a sport button and a sporty look to the bodywork of the car.

The interior is unmistakably MINI with its retro looking round dials and controls. Everything about this car is fun and although it is fairly expensive, it is cheap to run and it will prove to be a good investment as it does hold its value far better than most and is always in demand on the used car circuit. Suzuki SX4 Interior
Audi A1 The Audi A1 is a prime example of great things coming in small packages. This compact model has all the great qualities of an Audi and is one of the most attractive small cars available today. Available as a three door or five door model, the Audi A1 comes in a range of turbo engines, a 1.2 litre and 2x 1.4 litre petrol units, as well as 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre diesels. The petrol engines are significantly quieter. The 1.2 is ideal as a town car, it is small and efficient, perfect for nipping in and out of traffic in the city, but with the luxury trappings of a much larger car. The 1.4 and the diesel are fast and flexible and handle corners well, making for an excellent car for cruising. It boasts great boot space and plenty of room for the driver and front passenger, but the rear passengers do not benefit from the same generosity of space. There are five specs available - SE, Sport, S Line, S Line Style Edition and Black Edition. The S Line has particularly firm suspension that can become a little uncomfortable on bumpy roads. The A1 is stylish, striking and fun. It has not compromised on quality and features all the desirable trademarks that Audi is so well known for, including comfort, luxury and build quality. It is the most affordable car offered by this high quality brand, but with its sleek exterior, luxurious interiors, unrivalled safety measures and stability control you will feel like you are driving a top of the range model. www.audi.co.uk
This crossover gives you the agility of a small car and the looks of a 4x4. It is available in front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive and handles well on the road, with agile steering and a responsive nature making it enjoyable to drive in the city or out on country roads. The driver’s seat is height adjustable allowing you to find your optimum driving position and visibility is good. The interior is solid and the dashboard and controls are clear and easy to navigate. Boot space is minimal but the rear seats fold down easily with the pull of a cord and they further fold up completely behind the front seats to create more space. The space in the cabin will comfortably seat four adults. The entry level SZ3 includes remote locking, electric windows and air-conditioning and moving up to the SZ4 will add alloy wheels, front foglamps, automatic air-conditioning and keyless entry. Mercedes A Class Designed for the style conscious among us, this car is sleek and luxurious to look at and will be sure to turn a few heads. There are three petrol engine choices: a 1.6-litre with 121bhp and 154bhp power outputs and a 208bhp 2.0-litre. All the petrol engines feature direct injection and turbocharging. The diesel range starts with the 107bhp 1.5-litre followed by the 134bhp 1.8-litre diesel. A 168bhp 2.0-litre diesel will come later. All engines come with either a six-speed manual gearbox or the seven-speed dual-clutch auto with steering wheel-mounted paddleshifters that allow you to make the gearchanges yourself. The drive itself is good but the suspension is firm and it can feel a little bumpy. The car is refined, road noise is minimal and comfort is key inside the cabin. You can find your perfect driving position thanks to good seat adjustment, but rear passengers will struggle a little with legroom if they are on the taller side. The boot is a decent size but not as big as some of its rivals, the rear seats do fold down on a 60:40 split though to increase the area.

Seat Toledo If space is what you are seeking, then the Seat Toledo could be your match. It boasts over 500l of boot space and plenty of leg and headroom – even for the taller individual. It is fairly economical to run with the 1.6TDI diesel coming at 72.4mpg, while the 1.2l petrol engine returns 55.4mpg and the 1.4l petrol engine comes in at 45.6mpg. It scored the maximum five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash safety test and it comes with anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESP) and a host of airbags, including front, side, head and additional chest airbags all fitted as standard. Available in three specifications - entry-level E, mid-range S and top-of-the-range SE, the mid-range S benefits from body coloured door handles and mirrors and the top of the range SE will get you steering wheel-mounted audio controls, a USB port and six speakers. However, if you do not want to fork out for your very own caravan or motorhome for your ‘staycation’ then you can always stay in a static caravan. This accommodation offers you the best of both worlds, the feeling of a caravan holiday without all the hard work of setting it up. They are spacious and comfortable and there are many holiday parks that cater for disabled people, although it is always best to call prior to booking to ensure that all your needs will be accommodated.

BMW X1 The BMW X1 is a sleek and compact crossover that exudes a certain elegance for a car of its size and shape. Unmistakably recognisable as a BMW X model, the long bonnet and smooth lines that stretch along the sides of the car and over the robust wheel arches reinforce the sporty, off-road appearance. The drive is smooth and light, the gears are easy to adjust, gliding through positions with little effort. It offers a great balance of size and safety, not too big to manoeuver through tight traffic or roads consumed by parked cars. Combined with the spacious interior this makes for a great family car as it is at home both in the city dropping the kids at school or out in the country on a family camping trip.
On the motorway the X1 comes into its own as it eases up to 70mph without hesitation and the effective cruise control can be simply operated by a push of a lever. Everything is within easy reach, from hidden cup holders in the central storage bucket to the array of clearly laid out buttons on the central console. MINI Countryman The MINI Countryman is a bit like a MINI on steroids. Instantly recognisable as a MINI with the trademark bold rounded lines, steep windows and helmet-shaped roof and exuding an aura of fun, as the MINI range so naturally does. Great to drive, the elevated body gives you a great height for visibility while driving and the extra size doesn’t impact on the nippy feel that you expect from a MINI. As the name suggests, the Countryman settles nicely into windy country roads, it feels safe and stable, even at speed, and tackles corners well, leaving you feeling secure in a car that can handle twists and turns. Skoda Octavia At first glance most would consider this car to be simply a practical family car with space being its most attractive attribute, but look a little closer and you will find that the Skoda Octavia estate is much more than just practical. The driver’s seat adjustments ensure everyone can find their best driving position. Interior is high end with soft materials, a sleek infotainment system and clearly laid out dials and controls. Space is generous inside for both front and rear passengers and the boot is a great size. At 610 litres it will accommodate wheelchairs, prams and family luggage easily. Volvo V60 The Volvo V60 is a sleek and polished looking estate that offers owners an option that combines both style and practicality. The attractive interior is designed to a high specification with good quality materials offering durability. A particular style trademark that works well in the Volvo range is the slim control panel, it adds an air of high design quality to what could be considered just a ‘practical’ car. It’s little touches like this that ensure the Volvo V60 is a contender to its stylish estate rivals. The dashboard and all controls are clearly laid out, giving the driver easy access to information at a glance. The 430 litre boot is cleverly designed to
transform into a completely flat base when the rear seats are folded down. The backrest can be folded down on a 20:40:20 split, coming in very useful when you need a little extra boot space but still have passengers in the back seat. The legroom and headroom throughout is plentiful, even for the taller individual. It has start/stop technology and the drive is smooth and measured, with decent acceleration on the motorway. The motorway drone is kept to a minimum even at high speeds and, while it may not be the most exciting car on the market, it offers an enjoyable and extremely comfortable drive. Volvo are top of the list when it comes to safety. Unsurprising then that it achieved a full five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash testing.

The City Safe System is an intelligent device that detects objects in front of the car and stops it to prevent low-speed bumps. Peugeot 308 SW The Peugeot 308 SW’s recent overhaul has seen some good tweaks of improvement, from boot space to engine efficiency. This dynamic estate looks sleek and sporty and offers drivers a practical yet stylish option to handle daily living. It is the first Peugeot to feature the company’s new ‘PureTech’ threecylinder turbo petrol engine which is reportedly very impressive. There’s a new range of low-emission diesels too, the thriftiest of which offers CO2 emissions as low as 85g/km and a claimed average fuel consumption of 88mpg. Inside, the interior exudes class, the high end soft materials across the dashboard give an air of luxury and the controls are all accessed via a modern screen (except for the entry level models). Space is in abundance for passengers and the boot space is almost unrivalled. The standard volume from floor to parcel shelf is 660l (810l up to the roof ), but fold the rear seats completely flat via a clever bit of engineering and you’re looking at 1,515l to the parcel shelf or 1,775l up to the roof.

or most people, passing your driving test is a life changing moment. No longer are you restricted by the schedules of public transport, nor are you reliant on lifts from parents or friends to get you from A to B. Driving allows you to go where you want, when you want offering a feeling of independence you will have never known before.

John Rogers is a driving instructor with over 20 years experience teaching people with a variety of disabilities and health conditions, as well as conducting driving assessments to help people determine which adaptations are right for them. He is also the founder of The Association of Disability
John has seen first hand the difference obtaining a driving licence can make to people’s lives. Here, John takes us through the steps you need to take to get into the driver’s seat.
You must apply to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) for a provisional driving licence before you can begin your practical lessons. If you are receiving the higher rate mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), or the enhanced mobility component of the Personal Independent Payment (PIP) you can start to drive at the age of 16. This must be specifically requested and proof of your mobility component award will be required. You
can apply for your provisional licence from three months before your 16th birthday. This is done by filling in the D1 form, which you can obtain from your local Post Office or download from the DVLA website. www.gov.uk/apply-first-provsionaldriving-licence When filling out the form you must give details of your medical condition or disability. An A-Z list of medical conditions that may affect your ability to drive is available on the DVLA website. www.gov.uk/health-conditions-anddriving When the DVLA receives your application, they will usually send you a ‘medical-inconfidence’ form, which asks for more details of your medical condition or disability and seeks permission to contact your doctor or specialist and ask for a report to be sent to the DVLA. is uncertain of the effect your disability or medical condition will have on your ability to drive safely, you may be asked to attend a medical examination by an independent doctor in your area or by one of the DVLA’s own medical specialists.

Take your theory test You need to pass your driving theory test before you can sit your practical driving test. The theory test consists of two parts: the multiple-choice part and the hazard perception part. You need to pass both to pass the theory test. Theory tests are computer based. If you have learning difficulties, problems with reading or writing, or if you have required additional help with schoolwork or taking exams at school or college, you may be able to get assistance with the multiple-choice part of the test. This may include extra time to take the test, a spoken test via the computer or assistance one-to-one. No concessions or assistance is allowed for the hazard perception part of the test.
Take your practical test Once you have passed your theory test
The Association of Disability Driving Instructors and you and your driving instructor are satisfied you have had enough lessons, you are ready to take your practical driving test. When booking your practical test, you must declare your disability or health condition so that the examiner can prepare for the test accordingly, for example by learning about the car modifications that are needed or by allowing extra time if you have a hearing difficulty, physical disability or learning difficulty. The extra time would also allow the candidate to take a break during the course of the test if, for example, fatigue is an issue. The practical test can be taken in either a manual or an automatic car depending on your needs; if you pass your test in an automatic you will be restricted to only driving vehicles with automatic transmission. If adaptations are required the examiner will record these on your Pass Certificate and these will be stated on your full driving licence.

he first completely electric car has been introduced to the Motability scheme. Nissan’s Leaf is the first all electric vehicle available to disabled motorists in exchange for their mobility allowance. Until now the scheme, which has helped millions of disabled people, has focussed on offering petrol and diesel models and a range of cars with electric and hybridengine technology.

This will cement the UK’s position as one of the best for electric vehicle recharging networks in Europe.
Why should you own an electric car? It is purely powered by electricity and so there are no emissions, making it sustainable, emission free and therefore environmentally friendly. Electric car owners do not have to pay car tax or congestion charges and many

Renault Zoe
Another manufacturer to have made leaps into all electric motoring is Renault. With its Twizy, Zoe and Van Z.E. it offers a range of electric cars and vans. The doorless Twizy reminds me of a cross between a Smart car and a quad bike. It is really just a driver’s car and is so small that there is certainly no room for any luggage or a wheelchair. However, I am told that it is great fun to drive. The larger Renault Zoe is basically an electric version of the Clio and is therefore more accommodating. This five seater five door hatchback is an appealing little car. It is expected to be the biggest seller in Renault’s electric car range.
chargepoints are free to use. The cars cost from just 2p a mile, which means a family that drives an electric vehicle 10,000 miles in a year would save around £1,000 on fuel costs each year. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg says: “Electric cars are one of the most promising of our green industries and we want to secure the UK’s position as a global leader in both the production and adoption of these vehicles. The extremely low running costs of electric cars help drivers save money.” He believes that this technology can lower UK emissions and create high-tech engineering and manufacturing jobs to boost the economy.
Transport Minister Robert Goodwill wants to open people’s eyes to the advantages of ultra low emission vehicles. “They are incredibly cheap to run and we’re giving grants that knock thousands of pounds off the price tag at the point of sale. This is great news for the consumer and for industry, with the UK well positioned to take the lead on the development of these advanced technologies,” he says.
Renault will hire its customers batteries appropriate to their annual mileage. Complicated battery leasing costs, similar to mobile phone contracts in terms of usage, need to be carefully considered. For example, a battery can be leased for £77 a month for a 9,000-mile per year, 36-month lease that compares to driving 700 miles in a 60mpg diesel car but this does not take into account the cost of electricity. Once Zoe is connected to a smartphone the driver can actually monitor the battery levels of the car. Produced in conjunction with Nissan and its Leaf, Zoe will also, unsurprisingly, travel around 100 miles on a single charge. Looks are in its favour. It has good street cred and looks futuristic with its blue-highlighted lights. The downside is the light-coloured interior, which might not wear too well. Finished in beige the inside is prone to showing dirt and grime. The top of the dashboard reflects onto the windscreen, too, which is always an irritation. However, overall it makes for an interesting user-friendly package.
There are disadvantages though, that include the rising cost of electricity making such vehicles expensive to run. BMW, which manufactures the i3, is trying hard to help combat such motoring | 35

UK (not Northern Ireland) households of BMW customers can now receive 100% green electricity through this relationship. This will allow BMW i3 and BMW i8 owners to charge their vehicles using renewably sourced electricity while at home, which could help stabilise prices because Good Energy sources all its electricity from certified renewables across Britain. It claims that no other energy supplier operates like this in the UK. Despite huge improvements in electric technology such vehicles do remain slow compared to their petrol, diesel and hybrid cousins.
How do you charge an electric vehicle? Motorists can charge their vehicles from home via a special charging point, similar to plugging in other appliances like a fridge or television. But there are
also an increasing number of rapid chargers that can be found at motorway service stations and even local supermarkets so that motorists can charge their cars up while shopping and most are free to use. The UK has seen the installation of the 195th CHAdeMO rapid charger at the Clackett Lane Services on the M25. These chargers can ‘refuel’ a Nissan Leaf from 0 to 80 per cent battery in just 30 minutes at zero cost to the driver. The UK charger was the 1,000th CHAdeMO rapid charger in Europe, almost double the number installed by January 2013. According to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg £9 million is being used to boost the number of charging points for electric cars. There are already more than 6,000 public chargepoints across the UK. The government has also committed to invest £5 million to introduce electric vehicles across government and wider public sector fleets this year. While the Nissan Leaf is the only electric car to be included in the Motability scheme “in this pricing quarter” according to Patrick Carpenter from Motability, there are a number of other electric cars coming to market which could become available through the Motability scheme over time.

This hatchback city car is typically BMW-esque in looks and the manufacturer claims that it “defines the car of tomorrow”. Not only is it emission-free, it also offers an almost silent driving experience. “Combined with intelligent BMW ConnectedDrive Services, you’ll arrive at your destination with the minimum of fuss,” the manufacturer claims. “We have excited the world about the possibilities for electric cars,” says Ian Robertson, the board member for sales and marketing at BMW. “BMW is determined to play a very significant role in electric cars, and London is the driving force in a lot of our thinking.” His comments come as the BMW i3 has been awarded top prize at the first-ever UK Car of the Year Awards. It triumphed in the Best Supermini category before the new BMW went on to scoop the title of UK Car of the Year 2014 as well as being crowned What Car? ‘Green Car’ 2014. “Alternative vehicles have made a big impression on UK car buyers in recent years and the i3 takes things to the next level,” says John Challen, Managing Director of UK Car of the Year Awards. “It might be a new direction for BMW, but the i3 successfully retains the driving characteristics from BMW’s more established models.” The brand-new factory in Leipzig set up to build BMW’s i range of electrified vehicles produces just 400 cars a month, largely because of production times for the carbonfibre bodies. BMW plans to introduce its second model in the range, the hybrid i8 sports car, which will have an official fuel consumption figure of around 80mpg and the carbon footprint of a small city car, concludes BMW’s Ian Robertson.

A Guide to Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs) If you are a wheelchair user looking for more independence, a WAV could be the right choice for you
What is a WAV? A wheelchair accessible vehicle, or WAV, is a standard car that has been specially converted to allow a wheelchair user to travel as the driver or passenger while remaining in their wheelchair. All WAVs are fitted with either a ramp (manual or automatic) or a lift to provide access to the vehicle from either the back or the side. They will usually have a lowered floor or raised roof to allow enough headroom for the wheelchair user, as well as wheelchair tie-downs to secure the wheelchair safely.
Why choose a WAV? For wheelchair users, a WAV offers a safe and comfortable mode of transport that is ideal if you are unable to transfer from your wheelchair to a standard car seat. It also avoids the hassle of transporting your wheelchair. WAVs can also offer you increased independence, as certain types
of WAVs can enable you to drive the car, by adding special adaptations.
Types of WAVs There are three types of WAV to choose from to suit different requirements.
Passenger WAVs In a passenger WAV the wheelchair user will be a passenger, usually situated in the back of the vehicle.
Drive From WAVs (DFWs) DFWs allow the wheelchair user to drive while seated in their wheelchair.
Internal transfer WAVs These WAVs allow wheelchair users to transfer easily to a standard or adapted seat in the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s position. The latter two options, where the wheelchair user will be driving the vehicle, will have an automatic ramp or lift, giving
the wheelchair user full independence to use the vehicle.
Adaptations There are many adaptations that can be applied to WAVs, as well as standard cars, to enable a wheelchair user to drive. In most cases adaptations are simple attachments allowing the carâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original controls and features to still be used, so the nominated driver can still drive the car as well as the wheelchair user. Some adaptations come as part of the WAV conversion and are therefore included in the price of the lease, however others may be optional extras that you will need to pay for.
Here are some examples of adaptations that can be applied: Hand controls This adaptation, often a push/pull device,

Things to consider when choosing a WAV WAVs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The one you choose will depend on your requirements. If you think a WAV is the right option for you, Motability recommend that you consider the following key factors in order to choose the right WAV for you: • The size and weight of your wheelchair – does the WAV have enough room for you to comfortably enter and exit the vehicle? • Your seated height in your wheelchair - most WAVs will have had their floors lowered in the conversion. Make sure the headroom is comfortable for you. • The number of people you regularly travel with – in most cases standard seats will have to be removed to allow wheelchair access. In some cases additional seats can be added in the rear but this can be at an extra cost. • The amount of luggage or equipment that you need to take with you on your journeys – is there enough room to stow this in the WAV along with your regular passengers?

Electronic accelerators This device is a ring situated either above or below the steering wheel that enables you to accelerate with much less effort than a push/pull hand control. It is also available as a trigger device. All electric accelerators also come with a hand operated push brake, again meaning there is no need to use pedals.
Left foot accelerators This adaptation is best suited to those users who have lost movement in their right side but can still operate pedals with thier left. The original accelerator does not need to be moved, it is simply folded away and can be used by a nominated driver when needed.
Pedal modifications If you have difficulty reaching the pedals when driving, it is possible to have them extended.
Steering aids A steering ball can be fitted to allow you to have more control when steering the car if you have difficulty holding or turning a standard steering wheel. You simply hold the ball and turn the steering wheel in the direction you wish to travel.
Remote control devices This adaptation allows you to control car functions such as the lights, windscreen wipers and horn from one easy to access location, usually a single control pad mounted on the steering wheel.

Although the Qubo is a relatively compact vehicle, within the conversion Sirus have implemented a number of changes to increase the interior space, including the ergonomically designed centre console. Other interior features include electric front windows and air-conditioning.
Safety
Accessibility The ‘Switch’ features an automated tailgate and ramp at the rear meaning you can open the vehicle and deploy the ramp whilst you make your way to the car. The ramp has a shallow incline of just 12 degrees, with anti-slip coating for added stability.
The vehicle’s fully automated tailgate and ramp have been crash tested. There is also an automatic locking system to secure your wheelchair in place once in position. A manual option is also available if you prefer, or a combination of both if you plan to travel in both positions. Remote central locking also comes as standard. Interior Lewis Reed’s conversion has two permanent front and rear passenger seats with a removable middle rear one enabling the wheelchair user to be as far forward as possible in the centre. Top Tips for taking care of your car Owning a car is an expensive responsibility. Fuel costs, MOT’s, servicing and general maintenance can really take their toll on your wallet, so your best option is to stay ahead of the game and take good care of your car. The better you look after it, the longer the life of the car and hopefully the less you will have to spend on it. We have put together some top tips for ensuring your car stays in tip top condition: 1
Easy on the Acceleration Don’t accelerate your engine during start-up as this quickly adds to the wear of the car’s engine. Ensure you accelerate slowly when you begin your drive and always go into neutral at red lights to give the engine some time to rest. 2
Check your brakes
Your brakes should be visually inspected at least once a year. Brake shoes eventually wear out just like the soles of your walking shoes. When they wear all the way through it can cause damage to the brake rotor that can be expensive to fix. Even though they stop the car effectively the shoes could be very thin and start damaging the brakes any time so check them visually. 3
Wash your car once a week

Improper wheel alignment shortens the life of your tyres as well as causes steering problems.

Washing your engine every year will help it to run cooler. A clean engine also enables you to easily spot leaks and service its components. This can be done at home or you can have it professionally cleaned, avoiding any mishaps if you are not the most comfortable around car engines. 9
Have your car regularly serviced Schedule your car in for a service every year to ensure that it is inspected by a trusted professional. Catching any damage or problems early at a service could save you a lot of money in the long run. 10
Maintain your car battery It doesn’t matter if the manufacturer claims that the battery is maintenance-free, you still have to regularly check it to extend its life. Start by keeping your battery terminals clean. You may wipe it with a damp rag with some detergent if needed. Also check the battery case for any sign of damage.
