Network for the future SI Network helps develop occupational therapists for the future cross the UK and indeed further afield, occupational therapists are adapting to new areas of work and development. While 20 years ago the field may have been limited to traditional supporting roles, there are now OTs working across a plethora of emerging roles and in key areas such as child and adolescent mental health, adult learning disability, paediatrics and neonatal care.

A

As new areas of OT practice emerge, so too do therapeutic frames of reference that OTs are choosing to use in their everyday work. Sensory integration is one such area of developing theory and practice. As the evidence-base supporting it steadily grows, more OTs are opting to use SI, as either a stand-alone intervention or as part of a wider treatment plan to enhance clients’ occupational engagement and performance.

the technical know-how but also the confidence and creativity to use SI to help those in their care. Ciara McGill, an OT in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust (SHSCT) Adult Learning Disability Team, achieved her Postgraduate Diploma in SI last year and has used her learning to benefit those in her care.

“Over the next three months, Ciara worked with the patient and his support team to bring about considerable changes in his care plan by using SI techniques.”

Among the training options offered by the SI Network is the gold standard Modular Pathway. In conjunction with Ulster University, this qualification offers a route to recognition as an Advanced Practitioner and the acquisition of a Masters Degree.

Ciara was approached by the Trust after they had their application for private treatment for an individual with learning disabilities and autism, declined. The Trust was looking for another approach for the patient’s care-plan and thought that Ciara, with her training in SI, might be able to help.

Following years of classroom based courses, the Modular Pathway Modules 1, 2 and 3 are now available online. There are numerous benefits to online training. Not only can you learn at a pace and a time that suits you, it is also a more cost-effective way of obtaining a formal SI qualification.

Over the next three months, Ciara worked with the patient and his support team to bring about considerable changes in his care-plan by using SI techniques and interventions. All this work took place after hours in a paediatric treatment space, which Ciara and her manager had negotiated via a separate directorate.

Split across four individual modules, the course not only equips therapists with

Following this programme of care, Ciara then trained the support team and made

recommendations on how to help with his self-regulation in the future. The team, who were previously apprehensive about working so closely with the client, were empowered by their SI training and are now confident in caring for him. As a result of her work, Ciara was shortlisted and won an award at the Southern Trust AHP Best Practice Event. For more information about the SI Modular Pathway or other sensory integration courses, visit sensoryintegration.org.uk.

About the SI Network The SI Network is a not-forprofit organisation which works to promote education, awareness and research into the theory and practice of Ayres’ Sensory Integration (sensory-integration.org.uk).

than 10 years after I qualified. That first level 5 education module, was the most terrifying and exciting thing I had done. I was terrified I would fail, especially as most of my fellow students were teenagers and those first assignments were painful but I was so excited to learn in an academic way and be more theoretical. Since then, more than 20 years on, I have never looked back or stopped learning. Health and education’s exact relationship is more complex. Improved health may be an indirect outcome of better jobs, higher income and greater social connections. However, it may be that as we learn more, we engage in better health behaviours. As health professionals, we therefore are in a great position to learn about looking after our own health while learning about the health of our clients. When we learn about risk factors and protective health behaviours related to our practice, we are more likely to use that information for ourselves and our families. Making changes to our diet, daily exercise schedule, drinking, and sleep habits do have a significant effect on our health,

and while public awareness is growing, we have an advantage, because we can and do access the evidence to support our own health behaviours. I once found and filed a scientific research article from a high quality peer reviewed publication that espoused the health benefits of drinking champagne three times a week. One of my most useful CPD activities to date! NHS Choices states that learning new skills throughout life can improve and maintain our mental wellbeing. They conclude learning throughout life is associated with greater satisfaction and optimism. There is a positive connection between learning in adulthood and ability to cope with stress, as well as increased feelings of self-esteem, hope and purpose. CPD may not have an immediate effect on your take-home pay, but if you are in a stressful situation, CPD can increase

“Learning often involves interacting and increases our wellbeing as we build and strengthen relationships.” your sense of achievement. It is key to improved self-identity, as you improve your sense of self-worth. Learning often involves interacting and increases our wellbeing as we build and strengthen relationships. Whether attending in-service education opportunities, courses or conferences, there are opportunities to make new social networks. I attended a seminar and met an OT I trained with many years before. We had lost contact but I have strong memories of us catching up over lunch after nearly 20 years and I still have email contact with her now. The point is not purely about making or finding friends, rather professional

connections and conversations with people that can help you gain a different perspective and find opportunities to make changes in your practice. If you think you are getting too old to benefit from learning new tricks, there is compelling evidence that engaging later in life has major health benefits. A study of people aged 55-70 in a university programme in comparison to similar people who were not in education, showed no difference for cognitive functioning (including memory and learning) and health status prior. After the educational programme those that were in education increased their overall level of activity and improved memory functioning, while those that were not in education became worse over the same three-year period. Moreover, significant differences between the two groups were found for social and productive activities, emotional balance, information-seeking and general health awareness. In this study, the three-year follow-up findings suggest continuing to learn helps you stay healthy in older age.

Although no differences were found between the two groups in terms of subjective health, i.e. people’s selfreported experience of health, people between 55 and 70 years who had engaged in a university programme maintained their objective health, and were shown to have less illnesses than the control group, who showed a significant increase in the number of illnesses reported at the three-year follow-up. Whatever and however you learn, the potential for improved wellbeing is important. There are varied opportunities both through your work and through professional links. Reading this CPD supplement will help you to find more opportunities for courses and training. Setting goals for the next year will help you focus and increase opportunity for achievement. CPD doesn’t have to be expensive, nor does it mean that you have to get time off from your day job. There are many flexible ways to engage in CPD and I will be covering these strategies in this column.

CPD TRACKING

Keeping track of your CPD Keeping on top of your CPD portfolio can be much like keeping your CV updated. ou work hard and put in the hours to better your professional development, skillset and know how to help propel yourself further up the career ladder, to then find recording it tedious and choresome. If you aren’t keeping on top of it regularly, it can all quickly pile up before your eyes until one day you find yourself with a mound of paperwork to play catch up with. But by regularly keeping your ducks in a row and ensuring everything is up to date, an unexpected audit won’t fill you with panic and leave you in a race against time. As the worldwide web grows, so too does its place in CPD. Here are three of CPD Life’s picks for creating an online portfolio.

TRAMm CPD

CPDme

The TRAMm Model for Continuing Professional Development was developed by three practicing OTs and stands for Talk, Record, Activities, Monitor and measure. They explain: “The TRAMm Model, TRAMm Tracker and TRAMm Trail, collectively known as TRAMmCPD, provide health and social care professionals with a framework to facilitate the journey through Continuing Professional Development. In order to maintain registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) all registered health and social care professionals must undertake and evidence CPD. TRAMmCPD has been devised to provide a clear framework for maintaining and recording professional development.” With free downloads available to use in recording your CPD and their book ‘A Strategic Guide to Continuing Professional Development for Health and Care Professionals: The TRAMm Model’ available for purchase, the TRAMm model is one to have a look at. trammcpd.com

Also HCPC compliant, CPD Online is an interactive CPD portfolio designed specifically for OTs. A 14-day free trial allows users to try before they buy and records data online to allow users to access it remotely if needed. The Activities and Evidence Summary enables users to quickly log activities and evidence which can then be exported and printed as a table of information and the site hosts an everexpanding library of CPD information, resources, references and links.

CPDme is another online portfolio that can be accessed both on desktop and mobile and has been praised for improving organisation and being easy and clear to use when updating and referring to. The online nature allows for greater flexibility allowing OTs to update their work whilst on the move. With an easy to read dashboard, users can quickly see how up to date and balanced the CPD they have undertaken is and provides stats to ensure users can make sure they are including everything they have learned. OTs can include reflective pieces and the print function allows for easy hard copies. The basic package is free to use. cpdme.com

AN OT’ S ROL E

The professional’s ever-changing role Clare Barber, OT and DLF Training Services Development Manager talks about how the OT’s role has and continues to evolve. t was Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher, who said, “change is the only constant in life,” to highlight the need to always plan and be ready for change.

I

Within the healthcare sector the expectations and responsibilities of professional roles have changed steadily over the years. Take, for example, the role of a registered nurse. In the middle of the last century general nurses worked under the strictest supervision of the matron and doctors. Now, in many cases, we have specialist nurses prescribing and managing patient illness independently. So, what happens to the roles, tasks and duties that these professional staff have stepped up from? In most cases, the answer is the support staff, such as healthcare assistants, occupational therapy assistants and care coordinator roles. The health and social care sector has a strong commitment to the up-skilling and development of staff. Access to training and the development of the Care Certificate enables support staff to carry out their roles and more specialist tasks such as blood tests, dressing wounds and catheterising patients. Occupational therapy is a newer profession with defined skills that help people live more independently. However, over the last 15 years OT roles have developed just like their nursing counterparts. The OT’s role is now more complex and increasingly focuses on more difficult referrals, leaving support staff to assist with the lower level assessments. This means that support

“Occupational therapy is a newer profession with defined skills that help people live more independently.” staff need the same up-skilling and access to personal development. The Care Act 2014 has also changed the way we deliver services and recognises that equipment/assistive technology to reduce falls, prevent deterioration and maintain independence can be recommended by a range of providers from housing associations to charities. It is no longer just an OT’s forte. Many health and social care services are turning to OTs, within their organisations, to develop support staff and train them in the assessment of minor adaptations. This adds to the OT’s already stretched role. Quality can also be affected by lack of preparation time, available resources and limited reference to outside influences and new developments in the industry. CPD is a requirement of professionals working in the healthcare sector. OTs and nurses have allocated time for registration and clinical compliance. If the support staff are asked to take on tasks

that were once assigned to the clinicians surely professional development and CPD should be an expected part of their role and investment in their development should be made. This ensures support staff feel valued, are taken seriously and their confidence and quality of service increases. This is where organisations such as the Disabled Living Foundation step into the light. The Disabled Living Foundation is a market leader in helping people live independently. While providing information and advice to the public we also run a range of CPD accredited training courses aimed at skilling individuals who look after vulnerable clients. For more than 15 years, the accredited Trusted Assessor Training has been teaching people from care workers to handypersons to assess for and prescribe minor adaptations.
