ost Naidex we have all been busy catching up following an exciting show. The condensing of the show into two days seems to have worked well for most exhibitors and visitors as it has led to less time out of the office for staff, less money spent on travel and accommodation and the inevitable drinks bill was reduced for many. We hope you all had a successful time at Naidex as it is a great opportunity to meet customers and clients, network with peers and forge new business partnerships. With many exhibitions coming up throughout the summer before Trade Days and REHACARE towards the end of the year, hopefully 2018 is set to be a fruitful year for you. Social media is still an untapped market for many in our industry, but one that could open up many opportunities to connecting with new customers and clients. We look at how you can best utilise social media platforms, especially at exhibitions to engage with your target audience. We speak to Motion Healthcare to find out more about their company ethos and their place in the industry. We also talk to Claire Haymes, CMD Compliance and Project Co-ordinator at Closomat to find out what her role entails.

Allied Healthcare facing closure Allied Healthcare could face closure unless creditors back a rescue plan. Allied Healthcare, who care for over 13,500 people through 150 local authorities and out-of-hours GP services for the NHS, have filed for company voluntary arrangement. The CVA would give owners Aurelius four weeks to agree a new repayment plan with creditors, including landlords and pension trustees. Allied Healthcare is the latest domiciliary care provider to be hit by local authority cuts to fees paid for home care visits and rises in the minimum wage.

industry news London Bathstore to cause splash

Emergency services company support Yorkshire Care Equipment supporting the emergency services Yorkshire Care Equipment recently paired up with Yorkshire Ambulance Service to supply 30 Raizer emergency lifting chairs in a deal worth £80,000. The partnership has supplied more than 50 lifts to emergency services across the North of England, with the Raizer used by paramedics, rapid response teams and emergency fire services across most of Yorkshire and parts of Lancashire. The Raizer helps patients retain their dignity when getting back on their feet and only requires one operator, allowing services to use their respondents’ time more effectively. Yorkshire Care’s sales manager, George Hulbert, said: “People fall over every single

day, and many people can’t pick themselves back up. That’s where the Raizer steps in and does all the hard work for you.

On 11 May, mum and campaigner Sarah Brisdion is going “live, trousers down, on the throne for the public” in a London Bathstore window in a bid to create noise and gain more traction in her fight for more Changing Places facilities. The ‘Loo-athon’ will see the mum of Hadley who has cerebral palsy be joined by high profile disabled personalities as she builds on her Loo Advent calendar that gained massive online attention. Sarah said: “I hope it will cause a great stir, achieve lots of coverage and get people talking about toileting. I believe if we can break down the taboo around pee, poo and periods, it will really help stop the needs of hundreds of thousands of disabled people being brushed further under the carpet. We all have to pee. Some just need a little more help than others.” Sarah will be speaking at Bathstore’s Baker Street branch about her experiences and what needs to be done. She said: “The government needs to change building regulations to ensure these facilities are mandatory. Huge multi-billion pound businesses need to stop ignoring continuous requests and fulfil their responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010. Until then, I’ll keep being as extreme as I can.”

“It’s estimated that every minute [in the UK], six people over the age of 65 fall. The sheer volume of people who need help getting to their feet is huge and is only growing. “We think that the Raizer can provide the solution that’s needed to make sure that stress is minimised for both the person on the floor and their carer.” Deals with various emergency service teams have enabled the company to expand its supply reach throughout the whole of Scotland.

New premises for Adjustamatic Adjustamatic invests in new Macclesfield store

Web win for Disability Action Yorkshire Disability Action Yorkshire’s new website designed specifically for disabled people has been recognised at the Harrowgate Advertiser Business Awards

T

he Best Website winner features a platform for disabled people to share their individual stories. It beat out six other nominees in the running.

The charity’s chief executive Jackie Snape said: “We are absolutely thrilled that our website has won a Harrogate Advertiser Business Award. “The new website is a far cry from the one it superseded. It gives visitors up-to-date information on a variety of subjects, including services provided by Disability Action Yorkshire, training, residential care, the Own Goals buddying initiative and assistive technology. “However, what sets it apart

from others is the ‘share your story’ feature. “We want to hear from disabled people, carers and volunteers about their experiences, be it good or bad, and not just from those we directly support or work with. “These will enable us to build up a better picture of the challenges facing disabled people on a daily basis, and, whenever possible, help change the way people and businesses behave towards those with a disability. “Additionally, we will be able to celebrate when a disabled person has had a positive experience, which we believe is equally important.”

Leading manufacturer of adjustable beds and riser-recliner chairs, Adjustamatic, has expanded its retail estate with the launch of a new store in Macclesfield. They have opened the 3,964 sq ft retail unit to showcase the company’s full range of adjustable beds, riser-recliner chairs, mattresses, bedroom furniture and accessories which are made at the company’s factory in Denbigh. Five staff have been recruited locally to work at the store. All Adjustamatic products include built-in Cyclo-Therapy massage technology which is designed to improve blood circulation, provide relief from various health conditions and promote relaxation. The system is recognised as a Class IIa medical device and used by the NHS to provide treatment in spinal injury units throughout the UK. The new store will be Adjustamatic’s second retail outlet following the launch of its first store in Denbigh last year. Darren Thomas, Adjustamatic’s Head of Retail, commented on the launch: “Establishing a retail presence has enabled Adjustamatic to develop a wider market with people of all ages and mobility levels having the opportunity to try out our products and appreciate their general health and lifestyle benefits. We identified Macclesfield as an ideal location for our latest store in a thriving Cheshire town. This fantastic store will meet the needs of those in Macclesfield and Cheshire that want well-designed adjustable furniture to sleep, relax and move in greater comfort to help maintain and improve their health. ”

industry news New ferry link open Karma increases ferries wheelchair fleet for disabled passengers Passengers with reduced mobility booking tickets with Wightlink Isle of Wight Ferries can relax in the knowledge that the company has recently increased its number of passenger wheelchairs to 17, thanks to Karma Mobility. All 17 wheelchairs are the Robin model which is a robust lightweight model featuring an aluminium frame which has a system of cross braces and linking bars which give the Robin its strength. The Robin is one of the lightest crash tested wheelchairs available on the market today. Available with a comprehensive range of accessories, the Robin is available in seat widths of 16” or 18” and has maximum user weight of 115KG (18 stone) ensuring they are suitable for almost every Wightlink customer requiring assistance to, from or around the ferry.

“We initially purchased six Robins from Hayling Wheelchairs five years ago and from day one they have proved to be great value for money. Our maintenance manager is very happy with the wheelchairs as there have been very few issues over the years and we have rarely had to contact Hayling Wheelchairs except to order additional models due to their popularity and performance,” commented Head of Business Development Sean Millward. In the intervening years, Wightlink has steadily grown its fleet of Karma wheelchairs and now operates 17 across its six ports. The wheelchairs are used on a daily basis and staff find them very easy to manoeuvre while customers often comment on how comfortable they are.

Repose retailer offer Repose Furniture launches offer for May to kick start summer sales To help its UK retailers freshen up their showrooms for the summer, Repose Furniture is offering a 10% showroom discount on its Olympia or Kensington models. This special offer is limited to one chair and one sofa per retailer and is available until the end of May 2018. Retailers wishing to take advantage of this offer should contact their Repose representative directly for further information or to place an order. “We are committed to offering our retailers support in various ways and believe this promotion for May will help them to give their showroom a new look as we head into

the summer season,” commented managing director Lisa Wardley.

CareFlex colleague Passes Away CareFlex business development manager, Keith Stuart McAllister sadly passed away on Thursday 26 April. He was a CareFlex ambassador for 16 years and was well known and respected in the industry. He had strong relationships with his distributors and clients and will be sorely missed by all who knew him and worked with him. Keith was diagnosed with a brain tumour on 1 March this year but after an operation to remove the tumour, it proved impossible to remove it all and he was given only a couple of weeks to live. He defied the timescales given, reaching seven weeks, which he spent with his devoted family and friends. The funeral took place at Creiff Crematorium on Wednesday 2 May and guests were invited to wear something bright and cheerful and rather than flowers it was requested that donations be made to The Brain Tumour Charity. If you would like to make a donation in memory of Keith please visit thebraintumourcharity.org/ get-involved/donate.

This offer is the latest in a 12-month campaign by Repose Furniture which has been designed to further support its UK retailer network and help them increase their business within their designated area. For more information on the full range of bespoke seating solutions available from Repose or to discuss potential retailer opportunities call 0844 7766001, email info@reposefurniture.co.uk or visit reposefurniture.co.uk.

Blue Badge Style, commented: “For years I’ve been looking for elegant and fashionable disability equipment. In frustration we developed our own and our product DRINK will soon be followed by PHONE.

upported by the Design Council, this pop up event will be held at Charlie Allen Bespoke, Coopers Yard, 181 Upper Street in Islington and it will coincide with Design Week. Beginning at 4pm, with talks from a number of different brands showcasing their inclusive products, the evening will end with a concert featuring pianist Mark Pampel and jazz composer, James Welland, from 7pm until late with champagne sponsored by Pol Roger. The event will not only seek to educate and inform people of the different inclusive products on offer, it will also support the BBS MIX Bursary for disabled musicians at the Royal Academy of Music with charitable donations being taken. Featured exhibitors include DRINK, an inclusive glass holder, aimed at wheelchair, buggy or deckchair users, the first product in the ADDITION Collection, developed by Blue Badge Style with support from the Design Council. You can read more on the product on page 22. The following brands will also be in attendance showcasing their unique products that aid independent living: byACRE, Peep Eyewear, INDESmed, Wright and Teague, Zambuni Collective Mongolian Scarves and Tovi Sorga Contactless Bracelets.

“What better way to celebrate the current innovation and creativity happening in the inclusive products space by putting on a popup event to showcase some of the best. We look forward to bringing everyone together at our May Fair to celebrate the hard work being done to help those with disabilities maintain their style and expression.”

During the pop-up from 4pm-7pm, there will be 10-minute talks from each of the exhibiting brands including a chance to view the products, followed by the concert and champagne reception. For each glass of champagne, Blue Badge Style will be seeking a charitable donation to the BBS MIX Bursary. Social media isn’t all dog pictures and memes: it’s an important place to get your name and ideas known, especially during events and exhibitions.

Social Media at events

T

he four largest social media platforms for businesses just now are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. These are the places companies are investing time and money into, largely because they are where their customers are. Everyone uses social media in some way or another, unless you’re living in a cave and still sporting a Nokia 3410 and your Amiga 500 computer doesn’t get broadband. How a business uses social media can make or break them, and in events it’s even more important to ensure you’re using social media to its fullest potential to drive consumers and distributors towards your product, ensuring you get

GROW YOUR BUSINESS

the maximum exposure you deserve. Social media isn’t easy, however. You can’t just “get” something; it won’t happen overnight. It’s a long and arduous process in getting your company and brand noticed. Options like buying Facebook likes, Instagram and Twitter followers, likes and retweets may seem tempting, but inherently they don’t do anything. By buying followers and likes you can make yourself look popular, but you’re not really beating the algorithms of social media by raising your numbers inorganically. You’re providing yourself a boost to start with but in the long run that boost won’t make you popular. Starting from the bottom is the way to go,

Starting from the bottom is the way to go, and huge events – trade events like Naidex in particular – are ideal for giving you that boost you really need to your social media that can kickstart organic growth.

and huge events – trade events like Naidex in particular – are ideal for giving you that boost you really need to your social media that can kickstart organic growth. Let’s break down each social media platform you should be using from a marketing standpoint and examine the tools each of them contain which will enable you to reach the maximum number of people possible with your brand or product.

FACEBOOK Everyone’s on Facebook, from your granny to the head of your company. In terms of reach, Facebook is the single greatest tool you have to target people

and drive attention towards your brand, especially for an upcoming event.

can expect to see you specifically at the event.

Facebook is a great tool for establishing exactly how much interest you have in your product and brand and moving forward from there. The ability to create an event on Facebook will let you gauge how many people who are already conscious of your brand will be attending events or trade shows, so by creating an event to say, “hey, we’re going to be at this trade show, why not come along and see our products in person and get a demonstration,” you can not only create awareness of your presence at the show, but see how many of your existing followers will be attending, giving you a rough low floor for how many people you

Facebook Live is also something your brand should be engaging with: hosting a live stream of talks, demonstrations, or just using it to show people where you are at the event and build momentum can drive huge foot traffic to your stand at events. There’s also the classic option of buying ads. These are targeted, so you’ll always be appealing to people who will be likely to want your services and are available under a range of prices. Ads are a good way to increase engagement across the platform, but don’t guarantee the same at events. 

Grow your business

GROW YOUR BUSINESS

TWITTER Twitter is better facilitated to liveblogging than Facebook, and can therefore be used in a completely different way to reach your audience. Your event will have a hashtag, and using that in your tweets – as well as tagging the event’s account if they have one – is a great way to drive attention of people who will be attending to your brand. Twitter also has a live video feature much in the same way Facebook does, which can be used to great effect during liveblogging. Because the experience is much more instantaneous, it can be used to great effect when networking at events: don’t forget to take the opportunity to walk around events or shows and introduce yourself to people. Take photos or videos with other exhibitors and tweet them. The likelihood is they will share it to their audience, widening your reach further with consumers within the same demographic as yours.

INSTAGRAM Since Kylie of Kardashian fame and Rihanna took down Snapchat, the majority of its userbase has migrated to Instagram to utilise the Stories feature on the app: it functions in much the same way as Snapchat’s and appears on both Facebook and Instagram as

they’re part of the same company. It’s another great microblogging tool, and works especially well with visual media. Boomerangs (videos that loop forwards and backwards) and live videos can be used in demonstrations too, making it the preferred visual medium for those with an especially aesthetically pleasing brand or product. Much like on Twitter, hashtagging on Instagram can be used to great effect, but what’s really important is geotagging. Instagram allows you to geotag posts regardless of the location you’re in, which means when users look up an area – for example, the arena the show is located within – your post will come up if it’s geotagged there. This is another great tool to drive traffic to your

LinkedIn is a powerful tool if used correctly, and can be an excellent research tool in finding people you want to notice your product or brand

stand if you engage correctly with the visual medium of Instagram.

LINKEDIN LinkedIn is not Facebook. Don’t use it to post your deep, philosophical rants about how customer-facing positions are a lot like a boiled egg. LinkedIn is a networking site and it certainly doesn’t exist for you to try and usurp Confucius as the deepest philosopher ever. What it should be used for is to support your work on your other social media sites: you know you’re going to the event, so why not find other people who are, reach out and collaborate? Get to know your competition or fellow distributors and find out what is working in the market as it stands. LinkedIn is a powerful tool if used correctly, and can be an excellent research tool in finding people you want to notice your product or brand, getting to know them, what they like and dislike, and finding out how you can take advantage of this. In addition to this, you can use it to bring attention to the less consumer-focused aspects of your product. This is the one social media platform that isn’t customerfacing; you’re speaking with competitors and others who you may want to invest in or distribute your product or brand. Using LinkedIn, you can draw their attention to how your product will fit their marketplace and be an ideal investment for them.

MEMRICA

What if we could use data from our smartphones to pick up early signs of dementia? The majority of us live our lives through our smartphones. We spend more than 80 hours a month on them and the device is collecting information constantly, which can give insights into our lifestyle and patterns of activity. Memrica is an award-winning start up that has already released an app to support baby boomers to live life to the full without any fear of forgetting, to prevent declining social confidence and promote physical activity. Now it’s turning its attention to detecting the earliest signals of cognitive change. The concept is at an early stage; the company has been reviewing previous research on multiple indicators and is certain there’s an opportunity to bring currently separate strands of thinking and analysis together to create a simple indicator of risk. Current methods to detect the disease early need an expensive brain scan, which with numbers of cases predicted to triple by 2050, is unsustainable. The company is currently looking for partners with a passion to detect dementia early and help people to manage their own cognitive health.

3

COGNETIVITY’S INTEGRATED COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT (ICA)

The development of easily administered screening tests capable of detecting

neurodegenerative diseases during early, preferably asymptomatic stages of the disease remains a massive unmet need in modern medicine. Since such tests will be used for screening large populations of people, they should be non-invasive, inexpensive, and ideally independent of language, education, culture and practice. Based on current theory in neuroscience and following on from research carried out at the University of Cambridge, Cognetivity’s ICA looks for the earliest signs of impairment by testing the performance of large areas of the brain. The test also takes advantage of new AI and machine learning techniques, and from these elements they have developed a fiveminute integrated cognitive assessment tool (the ICA) that not only is easy to administer and has the attributes required to be widely used, but also has the further advantage that it can learn as it gathers new data to improve its ability to diagnose. As well as having the potential to be a highly effective dementia screening tool, the ICA can also be used for remote monitoring of the progression of diseases and measuring the effectiveness of treatments.

WOMEN IN HEALTH TECH

The newest category, the Women in Health Tech Entrepreneurs Award celebrates and supports women

pioneering innovative health technology, working with Our Mobile Health and Collider Health to showcase and encourage female entrepreneurs in the health tech arena. The category finalists include, Bright Sign smart glove which translates sign language to text and speech, enabling communication for non-verbal individuals, a postural support system for wheelchair users to empower them to be more independent in their daily lives and a wearable device that detects prolonged phases of shallow breathing, alerts the user and helps regulate breaths to improve stress resilience. Richard Cooper, head of digital and e-commerce, AXA PPP healthcare, said: “We are very excited about the groundbreaking innovations coming through these two new categories marking the fourth year of AXA Health Tech & You. The Innovations in the Early Detection of Dementia Award addresses a real need for health tech to help detect the early signs of dementia, speeding up a formal diagnosis and giving symptom-lessening treatments the chance to make a difference to people’s quality of life.” “We are proud to be celebrating female entrepreneurs in the health tech space, showcasing innovative devices designed by women.” 

e take a minute to get to know one of the leading figures within the independent living sector. This issue, we spoke to Claire Haymes, CDM Compliance and Project Co-ordinator at Closomat WHEN WAS CLOSOMAT ESTABLISHED? Over 57 years ago, by Robert Willan. Today the company is still family owned.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE PRODUCTS YOU PRODUCE? WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE INVOLVE? As my job title suggests I oversee projects from start to finish ensuring our compliance with Construction Design Management regulations (CDM). This involves providing technical advice, quotations and client liaison, all the way through to arranging for installers and completing risk assessments.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE? This is easy to answer. Once one of our commercial projects has been completed, I love to see the reaction of local disabled residents, usually via social media, as typically they have been the ones instrumental in equipment being purchased.

WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF WORK? Not to sound too boring but my young family keep me very busy, however I have just taken up a new hobby‌ Boxercise! I love the mix of stress relief and exercise.

Meet the Manufacturer

Motion Healthcare

We find out more about the inner workings of Motion Healthcare.

WHEN WERE MOTION HEALTHCARE ESTABLISHED? Motion Healthcare was established in early 2016 to supply the trade with a small range of high quality innovative and functional mobility products.

HOW MANY STAFF DOES THE COMPANY EMPLOY? From a customer facing point of view, our Head of Business is Tim Mills. That said there is a small, dedicated team behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly.

COULD YOU TALK US THROUGH YOUR RANGE OF PRODUCTS? The newest addition to our range is the exciting Lithilite portable scooter. Offering a market leading 26 mile range using a lightweight 5kg lithium battery pack the Lithilite breaks up into five easily manageable pieces, the heaviest weighing just 15kg. With loads of leg room, full front and rear suspension and a weight limit of 18 stone we have ensured as well as its market leading USP it is competitive all round as a

the addition of our new market leading Lithilite boot scooter, offering our customers a more mainstream product line.

WHAT SETS MOTION HEALTHCARE APART FROM ITS COMPETITORS? Being a small company allows us to offer our customers a much more personal touch than a lot of other suppliers in the industry. In the event of things unfortunately going wrong being able to pick up the phone and talk to our Head of Business straight away rather than being tied up in a complicated hierarchy and corporate procedures really helps us to offer excellent customer service.

WHAT EXHIBITIONS DO YOU ATTEND, AND WHICH WORK BEST FOR YOU?

premium portable scooter in any dealers offering. We have also worked really hard to make sure the usually expensive lithium battery pack is available to replace at a reasonable price in years to come, helping our dealer put their customers minds at rest regarding the cost of the new technology. Our history has been offering a small range of folding powered wheelchairs called the Foldalite. The range consists of three different models: the Foldalite, Foldalite Pro and the Foldalite Trekker. The intelligent, highly functional design of the range help it to truly stand out among its competitors. In just under a minute all three models can be quickly and effortlessly folded into a compact package for easy transportation and discreet storage. With three models there is a solution for every type of customer. The Foldalite is the smallest in the range at 25kg and a 15” seat, offering a nine mile range and an 18 stone weight limit. The Foldalite Pro then adds suspension for an even more comfortable journey

and increases the seat size to 16.5”, the range to 11 miles and the weight limit to 23.5 stone, all for only an additional 1.5kg. The Foldalite Trekker then offers an even larger 18” seat as well as larger 12” rear wheels and 250w motors to help tackle even tougher terrain.

HOW HAS THE COMPANY EVOLVED? To be honest our evolution has been pretty short so far but the major changes recently have been the addition of our Head of Business, Tim to help us be more proactive to the trades interest in our products and raising awareness to those who are yet to discover us. Our most recent evolution has been

In the last year we’ve attended both Trade Days and Naidex to make sure we raise as much awareness as possible. Trade Days worked really well for us, we met some great new customers and helped develop our existing dealer network. The launch of the Lithilite at Naidex also helped us meet even more new customers as well as lots of interested end users, giving us some great leads to pass to our dealer network.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR MOTION HEALTHCARE? Developing our current products to help keep them as up to date as possible in order to maximise sales for us all as well as carefully adding exciting and innovative new products to complement our range.

Being a small company allows us to offer our customers a much more personal touch than a lot of other suppliers in the industry. tradepointmagazine.co.uk I 27

A

common problem for anyone with mobility issues who has young children to look after can be the logistics of carrying them safely, securely and happily. Going out can prove difficult and stressful for many in this position and there are limited solutions on the market to offer suitable systems. Steve’s wife Kellie was diagnosed with MS about five years ago and her mobility declined over a few years, making trips to the shops, days out and holidays difficult as they had two young children to take care of. Steve, who has a wealth of design experience having worked in the industry creating products for children with special needs for 18 years, decided to take it upon himself to create a design that would solve their challenges. He told TradePoint Magazine: “I looked at a way that my wife could still independently take our children out but without the anxiety or stress trying to stop our children running loose and hanging off the mobility scooter.” Steve took matters into his own hands and forged ahead designing a solution that would fit with everyday family life. The result has been the Hitch, a brightly coloured, lightweight seat that can be attached to the back of most 4mph mobility scooters to give young children a seat with a lap belt to keep them safe behind their parent or

carer. The Hitch also features textured footplates at the back for an older child to stand on and ‘hitch a ride’ on the scooter. It has a unique pivoting system that prevents jack knifing when reversing, swivel wheels for better manoeuvrability, it is height adjustable to Made from aircraft fit the scooter seat height grade aluminium for a and the padded seat can be folded away easily lightweight and durable for transportation – it design, the Hitch is fits neatly in a standard available in four colours, suitcase.

pril saw Naidex returning for an incredible 44th edition, once again proving its significance in the sector. The event’s tireless pursuit of innovation and continued dedication to the care, rehabilitation and lifestyle of people with a disability was evident throughout every corner of the show.  INDUSTRY EVENT

Naidex 2018

N

ews of Naidex caught the attention of the entire disability sector, so it should come as no surprise that the event welcomed a colossal 12,517 visitors, including Paralympians, figures of influence, celebrities and household names; even the one and only Warwick Davis made an appearance! The sheer number of visitors, along with the calibre of exhibitors created an undeniable buzz around the event, which was palpable throughout both days of the show until the doors closed at 5pm. Across both days, attendees gained sought-after information, inspiration and guidance through the impressive lineup of 200 world-class speakers. This year’s keynote speakers were easily recognisable as some of the industry’s most influential figures, resulting in keynote theatres that were bursting at the seams for the duration of their presentations.

“Whilst the crowds moved amongst the ever popular theatres, there was still a huge number of visitors who were there for the sole purpose of meeting exhibitors and seeking new business opportunities.”

Of particular interest was Sarah Newton’s seminar, in which visitors were hanging off her every word as she

discussed work going on in government to promote the development and use of innovations in independent living. Undoubtedly the most popular seminar of the day, the theatre was overflowing with excitement and anticipation. Whilst the crowds moved amongst the ever popular theatres, there was still a huge number of visitors who were there for the sole purpose of meeting exhibitors and seeking new business opportunities, of which there was plenty. Visitors were treated to a plethora of futuristic technology, mobility solutions, healthcare and daily living essentials. This year, Naidex also played host to exciting new features that proved to be incredibly popular. A feature that got people talking were the panel debates, and in particular the employability panel. The panel ran way into the afternoon as questions and conversations flowed between the crowd and panelists, which included the likes of Martyn Sibley (Disability Horizons), Kamran Mallick (Disability Rights UK) and Diane Lightfoot (Business Disability Forum). Both attendees and panelists left the discussions feeling enlightened, inspired and

Naidex 2018

empowered about the future possibilities of employing people with a disability. For the first time, Naidex held the Moving & Handling Lab, and “moving” is definitely the appropriate word to describe this particular feature of the show, as there was never a moment where the Lab wasn’t overflowing with attendees. The healthcare professionals and carers who managed to gain a coveted audience spot in the lab had the chance to see state-of-the-art products - including the likes of Linet, Handicare and Etac - in action, and on top of that, attendees were even invited to get involved and try out the

products and techniques for themselves. Naidex reached another peak when the Home, Design & Build Summit was a resounding triumph. The Summit became a hotspot for forward thinking individuals who wanted to witness groundbreaking adaptations as well as hear of the latest developments and strategies set to revolutionise the future of independent living. 2018’s instalment of Naidex also held The Naidex Awards, which ran in association with Relync. This was an area of pure excitement and friendly rivalry as exhibitors battled it out, impressing the panels

of esteemed judges. One of the judges - Digital Inclusion Lead at Microsoft - was so impressed with the awards, he said he would happily return to judge next year; so keep your eyes peeled for him at next year’s show. The 44th edition of the show made a tremendous impact on the disability sector. For the first time in a decade, Naidex had reinstated trust in the hearts of its visitors and exhibitors. Trust that the event was back to providing the best products and services the industry had to offer. Trust that accessibility and inclusion was at the top of the show’s agenda. But more importantly, trust that the future of the disability sector is bright.  For media and press enquiries call Josie Carnaby at 0117 990 2096, email josie.carnaby@ prysmgroup.co.uk.

Naidex is without a doubt the best show I have attended. The beauty of the event is that it brings so many different groups and organisations together in one place – the cross pollination of ideas and information keeps the hall buzzing from the moment you arrive until the train ride home and the days that follow (...) Naidex always keeps people with disabilities like me at the very heart of the show.” Eleanor Dewar, Blue Assist UK

Naidex success for Topro N

aidex 2018 was a great success for the team at Topro as Managing Director Paul Briggs commented. “Once again, the event enabled us to engage with healthcare professionals, end users and retailers and demonstrate our range of products in a relaxed and informal environment. Our 2 in 1 wheelchair and rollator the Rollz Motion 2, the Odyssé rollator and the Troja Forearm Walker all proved extremely popular with all our user groups along with the other models in our range and during the two days we booked a significant number of assessments and demonstrations and signed agreements with several new retailers. Exhibitions such as Naidex play a vital role in our marketing activity and the next event we will be attending is RISE East Midlands, which will be taking place on 12 July at the East of England Showground, Peterborough”.

ROLLZ MOTION 2 The Rollz Motion 2 incorporates a unique design which enables the user to transform it from a rollator into a wheelchair and back again in one simple movement meaning they are getting two mobility solutions in one. With a maximum user weight of 125kg / 19st 9lb, seat dimensions of 42cm x 45cm x 55cm and a minimum and maximum user height of 1.60m to 1.90m / 5ft 3” to 6ft 3”, the Rollz Motion 2 can accommodate most users and is ideal for anyone that requires the assistance of a rollator and wheelchair but does not wish to purchase both (featured on page 46).

THE ODYSSÉ The Odyssé, is the ideal travel rollator due to its innovative two-way folding mechanism. When folded, the dimensions of the Odyssé are just 75cm x 44.5cm x 24.5cm ensuring it can be easily transported in the back of the car or on public transport in the bag which is provided.

TROJA FOREARM WALKER The adjustable Troja Forearm Walker has been designed to provide the user with increased stability thanks to the forearm supports. Available in three sizes, the Troja has a wide range of user height and weight limits (Medium – user height 150-185cm, max user weight 135kg / Small – user height 130-170cm, max user weight 125kg and Extra Small – user height 130-160cm, max user weight 80kg). Find out more on page 24. Topro offers group demonstrations, staff training and individual client assessment on site or in a client’s home and an extensive training and customer service programme to assist OTs and their clients both before and after purchase. All rollators come with a 7-year warranty and additional options include a one-sided brake and the drag brake. There is also a wide selection of additional accessories available.  For further information on the full range of products available from Topro, retailer opportunities and to book a demonstration or assessment please call 0115 8465406, or visit topro.co.uk.

WORDS BY PETER SHERVINGTON

Product Branding and Liability Consumers are growing increasingly aware of the responsibility of producers in a world where the media spotlight seems to constantly be on it. How do you protect your brand in these times?

P

roduct liability is creeping ever higher up the list of boardroom priorities for businesses across multiple sectors. Increased media attention on product safety incidents brings the potential for a badly managed crisis to kill off a brand entirely. Growing consumer awareness is translating into more civil claims and ever closer scrutiny by regulatory authorities in the wake of scandals such as ‘dieselgate’ and Grenfell Tower is partnered by dizzying fines where serious failings are identified. In the light of all this it is critically important that all businesses involved in product supply

chains understand their responsibilities and manage risk, regardless of where they stand in the product journey from factory to end user. It’s interesting that retailers and others in the supply chain who do not actually make a product often regard themselves as immune from product liability risks and assume that their suppliers will be the target of claims or regulatory scrutiny if things go wrong. Unfortunately, this is not often a safe assumption: many regulatory regimes place responsibilities not only on the manufacturer, but also on others in the supply chain, particularly those who place their brand on the product.

YOUR NAME, YOUR RISK Most products intended for or likely to be used by consumers (including those which might be targeted primarily at professionals, but which consumers may buy too) fall within the scope of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 (GPSR) which implements the EU General Product Safety Directive. These regulations place a strict and onerous obligation on ‘producers’ to ensure that the product is ‘safe’ – meaning that under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions of use it presents either no risk or only the minimum risk compatible with the product’s use. Critically, for the purposes of the GPSR, a producer is any person who manufactures a product, or a person who presents himself as the manufacturer “by affixing to the product his name, trademark or other distinctive mark”. This means

the obligations placed on producers are also applicable to retailers, merchants and distributors in circumstances where they place their own brand on the product. From the perspective of consumers and regulators, of course, this makes perfect sense: if a business sells a product as its own, it should be seen to be taking responsibility for the safety of that product. However, the rule continues to catch out businesses who are attracted to the idea of a product being associated with their

brand, but do not appreciate the responsibilities which come with such a move. The effect of this is that retailers and merchants applying their own brand to products need to ensure that they can be satisfied with the safety of those products. This means not only that they are designed and manufactured in accordance with technical requirements and industry standards, but also, for example, that adequate warnings and instructions for use are provided. The act of placing an unsafe consumer product on the market is an offence, regardless of whether or not a producer knew about a potential safety defect, and there is a requirement to notify the authorities promptly where a producer becomes aware that a product he has placed on the market - or supplied – presents risks to a consumer that are incompatible with the GPSR. Many other regulations also extend 

obligations to businesses placing their own brand on products – including, amongst others, the Construction Products Regulations 2013, and the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 – the latter imposing on ‘manufacturers’ requirements regarding regulatory conformance and an obligation to take action in cases of non-conformity and notify authorities where there is a risk, with the definition of ‘manufacturer’ cast broadly to include ‘any person who markets that equipment under that person’s name or trade mark’. Any business supplying articles for use at work will also be caught by the requirement under Section 6 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA) to ensure that the article is so designed and constructed that it will be safe and without risks to health at all times when being used by a person at work. Fines for breaches of the HSWA have recently been scaled up dramatically.

CIVIL LIABILITY In addition to the regulatory regime, those placing their brand on products are potential targets of civil claims for damages under the Consumer Protection Act 1987 which implements the Product Liability Directive in the event of an injury or damage to personal property caused by a defect. For these purposes, a defective product is one which fails to meet the standards of safety which users are generally entitled to expect. Crucially, a failure to warn of non-obvious risks or the

provision of inadequate instructions can render a product just as defective in the eyes of the law as a situation where a safety risk is presented by a design or manufacturing defect. Liability for claims of this type is strict, meaning that no fault on the part of the own-brander is required for liability to arise. In practice, a potential claimant looking to recover damages following an injury is much more likely to target the business which placed its brand on the product than trouble itself with identifying the underlying manufacturer or component supplier. It is left to the business whose brand is applied to recover damages paid out through strict liability claims through its contracts with suppliers (assuming they don’t exclude the right to do so). Potentially, resellers and distributors who deal directly with consumers could face further claims under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Here goods sold must be fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality.

Mobility Future

The future of mobility Toyota challenging outdated mobility devices

D

ata from an international study of wheelchair users by ComRes and the Toyota Mobility Foundation highlighted the need for investment and innovation in the development of assistive technologies for people with limited mobility.

spontaneity and independence (29%). The Toyota Mobility Foundation launched a $4 million global challenge to seek teams to create game-changing, personcentred technology to improve mobility and independence of people with paralysis.

The research found 90% of wheelchair users in the UK say they have experienced pain and discomfort as a result of their mobility devices and more than a quarter have felt frustrated because the design of their mobility device felt outdated.

The challenge rewards the development of personal mobility devices incorporating intelligent systems from exoskeletons to artificial intelligence and machine learning.

To tackle this, the top five suggested improvements were, to be able to move around faster (41%), perform regular day to day tasks more easily (40%), feel more relaxed and comfortable with a device that feels more natural and like an extension of themselves (34%), feel more confident and able to socialise with friends (31%) and feel a sense of

The Challenge encourages a usercentered approach and are inviting people with lower-limb paralysis across the world, to take part in a global conversation about the types of mobility technology innovations they would like to see, using the hashtag #MyMobilityUnlimited. The suggestions generated will be used to inspire entrants

to create technologies which directly address the issues faced by users on a day-to-day basis. Ryan Klem, Director of Programs, Toyota Mobility Foundation commented: “This research expresses the urgent need for innovation in this area. It’s surprising that with all of the technology we have today, we still have people in constant pain as a result of their mobility devices. The comments we are receiving through social media show the kinds of developments that people want to see and we hope the Challenge will result in genuinely lifechanging technologies. Challenge ambassadors include Sama Bullock, Mallory Weggemann, Ade Adepitan and Tatyana McFadden. Entries close on 15 August 2018, and the winners will be unveiled in Tokyo in 2020. mobilityforall.com

Business Merger

Permobil Partner with Innova to Expand Permobil – the largest power wheelchair manufacturer in the world – has partnered with Innova Care Concepts to expand its reach in the case management and litigation market in the UK.

H

aving already made their move into case management recently, Wetherby’s Innova originally focused on home adaptations and fitouts but also acted as supplier for the Permobil range. Permobil reached out to Innova with the intention of taking on their product range, with Innova carrying out client assessments and supporting people who have had life-changing injuries to maintain their independence and mobility with top-end equipment. Litigation projects advisor at Innova, Tristan Hulbert, said: “Whilst the vast majority of our product range is manufactured by ourselves or manufactured under license, in this instance, we have decided to take on Permobil’s range as it is so flexible and clearly some of the best electric wheelchairs on the market.

Permobil reached out to Innova with the intention of taking on their product range...” “It’s certainly an exciting time for us and we’re already seeing good growth in the litigation sector.” The partnership sees Innova specialists and engineers take on training with Permobil to get them up to speed, from how to specify and recommend a suitable, custom model for a client, to servicing and maintenance as required, with Permobil having a presence at Innova’s Litigation Project Conference in Norway this month. The Swedish company, which has been

open for business for over fifty years, designs and supplies electric wheelchairs suitable for adults and children, cementing Permobil’s status as a go-to on the busy market. Gordon Cunningham, Permobil UK’s general manager said of the arrangement: “Permobil and Innova are a great fit – we are both providing customers with highend technology and great quality. What’s equally important to us both is making sure our customers have first class service end-to-end. “Our new arrangement has started at a great pace with orders already in and more on the way. Business partnerships like this are of huge benefit not just to Permobil as a business, but also to our customers. I have every confidence that this will be a business relationship that brings Permobil and Innova significant growth in our focus markets.”
