IN THE WORDS OF THE COPYWRITER The reason I was freelancing as a writer the last couple of years is twofold: On one hand, my areas of expertise and interest (arts, culture, lifestyle, etc.) don’t tend to align with what most outlets in Costa Rica seem to care about. On the other, most local opportunities dealing with any area related to communications go by a generalized, volume-based approach that doesn’t really favor expertise in any way. Naturally, I had grown disenchanted with the way creative work is treated in the country, so my conclusion was to bury any expectation and try to position my talents elsewhere. When I saw the opening at 2Costa Rica Real Estate I was both excited and skeptical, as it seemed like a role that truly aligned with my interests and qualifications, but after years of sporadic LinkedIn applications, I had been self-conditioned to hope for the worst and wait for the inevitable “gotcha” moment at some point in the interviewing process. It never happened. I’d lie if I write that I wasn’t still somewhat anxious the first day I came to the 2Costa Rica offices, but once I got to meet the rest of the marketing team something clicked. It wasn’t anything rational, really, since everything was laid out on the table from the first day, but getting to see first hand the commitment the company has to its philosophy in the Marketing Creativity Session was a game-changer for me. I come from a social sciences background, and something that I’ve taken as part of my mantra is the idea of horizontal relationships, of seeing eye-to-eye with whoever I’m talking to and paying close and genuine attention to their perspectives and where they’re coming from. From what I’ve seen so far, 2Costa Rica Real Estate has this concept as one of their core values. Everyone (myself included) has been exposed at some point to the clichés of what Real Estate is supposed to be: a “shark mentality” of “attacking” the customer; interactions being reduced to an almost confrontational affair. That’s not how things work in 2CRRE. The company prides itself on approaching things differently, of being an agent of change within the industry. Integrity and transparency thus become their flagships in this crusade towards shattered archetypes and a wholesome environment of shared knowledge. From the moment I set foot in their offices, my skill set has been upheld as the reason I’m there, and I’ve felt both the support and confidence that backs it.

Ever since commercial flights became widely accessible in the 1950s, the idea of resting in a tropical paradise has been set in stone as one of Western society’s favorite aspirations. After all, nothing makes a better contrast to the hectic pace and claustrophobic environments of a big metropolis like letting the calming melody of clashing waves wash over as you rest comfortably beneath the shade of a palm tree. The booming economy of the United States after World War II, and the aforementioned technological advances in global transportation, left the gate wide open for an apparently evergrowing American middle-class to explore beyond
the mainland, and after a whole generation tested the waters of weekends in Hawaii and Caribbean escapades, the general picture of what they wanted for their twilight years was pretty clear. Seeking a lower cost of living and slower pace of life, the Baby Boomer generation began flocking to Costa Rica during the 1980s, solidifying an ever-growing expat community that initially concentrated in the country’s world famous beaches, but can now be found all around the country. According to the U.S. Department of State, in 2021 as many as 70,000 U.S. expatriates live in Costa Rica. The reason behind it? The country’s high standard of living.

Once the national army was abolished in 1948, Costa Rica pledged that budget towards public education and social security, which has translated into a population that’s constantly placed amongst the better educated and most cultured in Latin America. Alongside this, the country’s political stability, long standing relationship with the United States, and uphold of tourism and service industries as the core of the national economy, set the basis for an extremely welcoming environment to expatriates, and things are only getting easier in the so-called new normal.
