NINA KRAVIZ Rekids - Siberia

Since establishing herself through a run of accomplished deep house singles for Rekids and Underground Quality, the Russian DJ and producer has gone on to enjoy one of the busiest touring schedules of anyone on the scene. Last year saw her release of her eponymously titled album, a truly unique take on House music, that translates just as well on radio without compromising its integrity.

Very rarely does a DJ/Producer shoot to stardom so quickly - and when they do, they seldom have the talent to back it up. Nina is the exception to the rule. 2013 has seen Nina Kraviz continue to play at the major clubs across the globe every week, mixing her unique raw blend of House, Techno, Acid and rare goodies, much to the punters’ delight.

NINA KRAVIZ PLAYS SANDINOS, WEDNESDAY 26 JUNE

BICEP Feel My Bicep

Hailing from Belfast and longtime procurers of the famous ‘Feel My Bicep’ blog, Bicep are a duo making movements to conquer the producing scene. Bicep create music that exhibits a clear awareness and respect for the rich history of house coupled with a forward-thinking and progressive application of this expansive knowledge, forging their own wonderfully individual and joyous

brand of house music. The success of tracks such as Stripper, Vision of Love and You confirmed Bicep’s position amongst the upper echelons of modern dance music. 2013 sees the Bicep guys get even busier with a packed diary for the rest of the year and more high profile releases including the ‘Stash’ ep on Aus and a massive collaboration with Simian Mobile Disco.

BICEP PLAY SANDINOS, WEDNESDAY 26 JUNE

LE CAROUSEL Phil Kieran Recordings

“Echoes from Serge Gainsbourg to New Order and Eno and Jacko conjure a beguilingly sensual reverie’’ Q Magazine **** “A blissed-out album of reflective songcraft, tinged with time-lapse psychedelia” DJ Magazine Le Carousel is the new band project from acclaimed Belfast DJ/ recording artist Phil Kieran. A DJ with an international reputation,

Kieran is also renowned for his techno productions on dance labels including Soma, NovaMute and Bugged Out! For ‘Le Carousel’ Kieran assembled some of Ireland’s finest musicians, writing most of the album while staying in Donegal on the remote west coast. Fittingly ‘Le Carousel’ evokes feelings of half-remembered childhood day-trips and windswept empty beaches. An extraordinary piece of work.

LE CAROUSEL PLAY SANDINOS, WEDNESDAY 26 JUNE

HENRIK SCHWARZ Innervisions – Berlin

HENRIK SCHWARZ’s live show is now one of the most requested live acts in the dance scene. Voted in the top 5 live acts in the world by RA, German house maestro Henrik Schwarz is an artist we’ve been after for many years. He has been a true player in the house game since the early noughties, with globally acclaimed releases on Innervisions, Moodmusic,

Sonar Kollectiv and his own label Sunday Music. He has remixed many very well known names like Mari Boine (Universal), Kuniyuki (Mule Musiq), Tosca (G-Stone), Ethnic Heritage Ensemble (Deeper Soul), James Brown, Dark Globe feat. BoyGeorge, Omar feat. Stevie Wonder, Jazzanova, Jesse Rose, Detroit Experiment, and many others.

HENRIK SCHWARZ PLAYS THE GWEEDORE, THURSDAY 27 JUNE

FRANCESCO TRISTANO Deutsche Grammophon / LX

Despite his classical training and his status as a piano wunderkind, Francesco Tristano always frowns and looks away when people talk to him about genres, styles, labels and limits in general. This is not for nothing - the Barcelona-based Luxembourger has often been seen in the company of techno luminaries such as Murcof, Moritz Von Oswald and Carl Craig, with whom he has collaborated many times, tracing the fine line connecting the classical piano with the latest generation of

keyboards and synthesizers. However, his eagerness to explore does not end there: his latest album for the prestigious label Deutsche Grammophon features an interpretation of a piece by Bach and includes two remixes by Kirk DeGiorgio and Brandt Brauer Frick. But the talent of great musicians and performers can usually be seen in all its fullness in live shows. And Tristano, who will be presenting a “solo show with piano + electronica - undoubtedly fits that bill.

FRANCESCO TRISTANO PLAYS THE GWEEDORE, THURSDAY 27 JUNE

METRO AREA Environ - New York

Touring for the first time in over a decade, Metro Area will arrive in Derry via high profile shows in London, Barcelona’s Sonar Festival, The Garden Festival in Croatia, and Berlin’s Panorama Bar. The brainchild of veteran producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani, Metro Area was born out of the pair’s somewhat dichotomous love for both the old moods of R&B, disco and boogie

and the more cutting-edge sound of innovative house and techno. Metro Area brings back the soulful experimentation of the early club classics, mixing live and electronic instruments. Simultaneously, the mood and minimalism of more recent dance music forms creep into the mix: Detroit’s cold futurism, Chicago’s abstract trackmodes, and the warmth of New York and New Jersey’s deep house.

METRO AREA PLAY ST.COLUMBS’ HALL, FRIDAY 28 JUNE

11

DJ HELL International Deejay Gigolo - Munich

Its been almost 30 Years since Helmut Geier aka DJ Hell set the needle on a House-Track. He’s been DJing House and Techno in all shapes and colours ever since. An unequivocal industry visionary, DJ Hell’s career has embodied and then transcended his many guises: Anti-Superstar DJ, International DeeJay Gigolo Label Boss, GQ Man

of the Year, Playboy, Jetsetter, Bon Viveur, Munich Machine, New York Muscle. Never one to stand still, the multi-talented DJ Hell is currently working on a new album which will be released late this year and he is also developing a live visual show. Prepare to be moved, deeply.

DJ HELL PLAYS ST.COLUMBS’ HALL, FRIDAY 28 JUNE

DEETRON Music Man – Switzerland

Deetron’s melodic, housey take on Detroit techno - has captured the hearts of many around the globe. Furthermore, his immaculate mixing skills and superb choice of records have kept him internationally in demand as a respected dj for well over a decade. Walking the fine line between the soulful and the industrial, Deetron appeals to techno freaks as well as house lovers. Not only do his own productions stand out but as

remixer on duty Deetron is highly respected. Some of his latest pearls included remixes for PBR Streetgang (on Hot Creations), Gerd (on Clone), Steve Bug (on Pokerflat), Simon Garcia (on Perspective), Danny Howells (on Dig Deeper). His multiple deckwizardry and performances at the best clubs around the world has resulted in Deetron now among the most in-demand artists in electronic music.

DEETRON PLAYS ST.COLUMB’S HALL, SATURDAY 29 JUNE

13

JOHN TALABOT Permanent Vacation - Hivern: Barcelona

Electronic house with dark overtones and dense atmospheres has one of its closest allies in Barcelona’s John Talabot. Talabot pays great attention to detail in order to create tracks that grow slowly but which always lead to a point where the rhythm and the human voice merge perfectly, blending between synthetic waves and irresistible crescendos. The release of his first album “Fin” has quenched the thirst for tracks that he created with his leap to

international fame in 2009. The album appeared on most respected reviewers lists of albums of the year in 2012. A smooth mix of house, disco and sun-kissed pop, it brought a musician previously struggling to be heard in his native country to the ears of people across the world, including The XX, who invited him to join them on tour. Having spent much of last year on the road supporting the black-clad trio, Talabot is now getting set for a big festival season.

JOHN TALBOT PLAYS ST.COLUMB’S HALL, SATURDAY 29 JUNE

14

KRYSTAL KLEAR Rinse FM

Krystal Klear has been making music his whole life. His major inspiration was always Boogie, Funk and Hip-Hop – leading him to create the Krystal Klear moniker in 2008. Brodinski, Mixmag, FACT Mag and Juno have all named him ‘One to watch’ and recent shows in Hamburg, Amsterdam and London have garnered hype from the European audience. Being

renowned as a firecracker live and a versatile DJ, his recent sets at the Warehouse Project playing everything from modern boogie, chicago house to Anita Baker have solidified his presence on the U.K club circuit. Endorsed by Dam Funk, Hudson Mohawke, Skream, Joy Orbison, Brodinski, Toddla T, James Pants, Jackmaster and many more.

KRYSTAL KLEAR PLAYS ST.COLUMB’S HALL, SATURDAY 29 JUNE

SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER R&S Records

If you believe Space Dimension Controller’s official bio, he’s actually one of the survivors of an intergalactic war, who was beamed back from mankind’s new home on the planet Mikrosector-50 in the year 2334. Not that Belfast native Jack Hamill needed any sci-fi trappings to make his music seem more interesting: the muted celestial disco of debut single ‘The Love Quadrant’ in 2009 was enough to get people talking, and subsequent releases – a discombobulating mix of vintage

electro, house, Warp electronica and dub effects galore – haven’t disappointed. Welcome to Mikrosector 50, the debut album from Space Dimension Controller, was released earlier this year on R&S Records to unanimous critical acclaim. The album features more of Space Dimension Controller’s distinct takes on ‘80s electro-funk, mellow synth-pop, pulsing techno, serene soundscapes, and more.

SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER PLAYS NERVE CENTRE, SAT 29 JUNE

16

KORELESS Young Turks

Koreless has been making music since the tender age of 9. Inspired by Jazz artists such as John Coltrane, he then went onto to discover Electronic music and created the Koreless moniker in 2008. Since early 2010, Koreless

has received love and support from Jamie XX, Jacques Greene and Mount Kimbie. Known for his emotional and spacial music, he brings depth to his live sets with re-edits and fresh takes on tracks.

KORELESS PLAYS NERVE CENTRE, SATURDAY 29 JUNE

17

JON HOPKINS Domino Records

Until now, Jon Hopkins has been an elusive character, known to most as an expert producer, Ivor Novello-nominated composer of film scores, remixer and long term collaborator of Brian Eno and Coldplay. Yet as Hopkins freely admits, the fact that his solo albums to date (Opalescent, 2001; Contact Note, 2004; Insides, 2009) have been rather overshadowed

by his work with others has meant that he’s been able to quietly develop his own identity, style and sound. His latest album, Immunity on Domino Records is a powerful, multi-faceted beast, packed with the most aggressively dancefloorfocussed music Hopkins has ever made. It is one of the most human electronic albums you’ll hear this year.

JON HOPKINS PLAYS NERVE CENTRE, SATURDAY 29 JUNE

ANDY VOTEL Finders Keepers & Twisted Nerve

Andy Shallcross is a music fanatic and has been since school. It was the mechanics of hip-hop production that spurred his search for original samples on vinyl, with his father teaching him how to make his first “wrongsounding demos using cassette tapes. He entered the realm of performance as a member of the Violators of the English Language crew, adopting the acronym V.O.T.E.L. that he still uses today. Andy has come a long way since

then, though, like the music he champions through Finders Keepers together with Doug Shipton, his actions have remained distinctly niche, preferring to operate deep below the strata of fashion and consumable tastes. He has masterminded numerous conceptual mixes and scholarlythemed compilations, from archiving rare folk and psychedelic pop from Wales to charting surf rock from Thailand .

ANDY VOTEL PLAYS THE PLAYHOUSE, SATURDAY 29 JUNE

19

A LOVE FROM OUTER SPACE Andrew Weatherall & Sean Johnston

The brainchild of Lord Sabre himself, Andrew Weatherall along with his longtime collaborator and friend Sean Johnston, A Love from Outer Space is something very special indeed. Originally run as a bi-monthly club night at a tiny, very sweaty room in North London, the night was designed to buck the trend and set out a different

musical philosophy than could be found in most clubs across the country. A heady mix of dub, disco, proto-house, Krautrock, post punk and electronic oddities with the bpms never consciously exceeding 120 to create a hypnotic, intense and ultimately refreshing aural experience.

A LOVE FROM OUTER SPACE PLAY THE GLASSWORKS, SUNDAY 30 JUNE

PAT MAHONEY LCD Soundsystem – DFA

Pat Mahoney is best known for his involvement with NYC dance-punk band LCD Soundsystem along James Murphy, however his love for music started way before that. It all began with his school bands: Distorted View (he was kicked out for not being a goth), The Five Deadly Diseases (think sexually related… boys will be boys) and finally, Les Savy Sav, where he first met Murphy, who recorded the band’s first album. It wasn’t long

before Mahoney left Les Savy Sav and joined the LCD dark side. With Mahoney on drums and Murphy on bass, they got high on Liquid Liquid and their mission was to simply make people boogie. They made people dance all over the world with their buzzed about sets, at a time full of indie kids with static feet. LCD parted ways last year but both Murphy and Mahoney remain on the DJ circuit.

TOM MIDDLETON: COLAB 06-13: THE DERRY RAVESTORY Tom Middleton, a regular at Celtronic, is coming to Celtronic 2013 to work on a unique collaborative project that will result in a live performance on Friday June 28th at The Glassworks, Great James St, Derry. In 1991/92, young people from all sections of society in the north west came together to dance, united by dance music. Celtronic are starting the talent hunt now for a small group of studio collaborators/instrumentalists/ vocalists/electronic producers to brainstorm, jam,

compose and maybe join Tom on stage to perform a special 60 minute piece of music. If you are interested in collaborating with Tom Middleton, you must be free all day on the following dates : 26/27/28 June and also the evening of the 28th for the performance at The Glassworks. We need your photo’s of raving / clubbing in Derry in the early 90’s and any stories or anecdotes to incorporate into the performance. Shut Up and Play The Hits: LCD Soundsystem

Thursday 27th June @ 8pm

Friday 28th June @ 7pm

Sunday 30th June @ 3.30pm

A chronicle of a fortnight in July in the live of two groups of young ‘Ravers’ in trouble torn Northern Ireland of the early 1990s. One group hail from Protestant east Belfast, the other from the Catholic west of the city. Talk of peace is in the air but death still stalks the streets. Dance culture seems to provide at least temporary respite from the sectarian bitterness and constraint which blight the lives of these young people. In the frenzied heat of the Rave old barriers collapse, new friends are found, a new day dawns.

For years, filmmaker Chris Eva has recorded Northern Ireland’s growing underground Hip-Hop scene, where sectarian baggage is left behind and the catchphrase is, “It’s not where you’re from – it’s where you’re at.” From old school B-Boys to present-day rappers, Eva’s film shows how Hip-Hop and its early proponents were peacemakers in a broken community. The screening will be followed by a discussion with some of the featured artists and a live jam in the bar showcasing local DJs, MCs and B-Boys.

On April 2nd 2011, LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD Frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of it’s popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold out, near four hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief.

EXHIBITIONS

´WASTED´ DAVID BOWEN The Playhouse. Exhibition Opens: 28th June Wasted. The great paradox of the slang use is that while wasting time hedonistically through the trappings of Electronic Music culture, in truth many of the souls who groove their way through a weekend are living harder, fuller and sharper than perhaps they ever will again. Electronic music has grown into one of the top three grossing genres of music since the mid 1990´s, when David Bowen began photographing the free-party scene in the UK. Having now documented events professionally on more than 60 international commissions, as well as many hundreds within England, this exhibition promises to offer an insiders perspective of this new World-Party. ‘CELTRONIC’ A photographic exhibition featuring photographs from previous Celtronic festivals by acclaimed photographers David Bowen, Emmett McLaughlin, Paul Kavanagh and Paula Gillespie. 24

CELTRONIC & CHIBUKU PRESENT CHIC FEATURING NILE RODGERS

THE VENUE 2013, DERRY: SUNDAY 28 JULY

There is nothing you can say about Nile Rodgers that hasn’t already been heard by billions of people, via millions of radio airwaves, in thousands of cities, in hundreds of countries. The career of Nile Rodgers is one of the most enduring and prolific in music. Nile’s signature is scrawled across an amazing array of music - from Madonna to Diana Ross, from David Bowie to Eric Clapton. Chic was the brainchild of Nile and bassist Bernard Edwards and went on to produce classics like “Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)”, “Everybody Dance”, “Le Freak”, “I Want Your Love” and “Good Times”. Between 1976 and 1983 Chic were the superstars of disco. They were the scene’s most enduring act and they outlasted virtually every other band before eventually disbanding following the anti-disco backlash.

Niles Rodgers went on to become a production legend, producing albums for the likes David Bowie, Madonna, Duran Duran, Diana Ross and Grace Jones. After a brief reformation in the early nineties Niles reformed Chic permanently in 1998 and they have continued to perform around the world ever since. Nile Rodgers was honoured at the Dance Music Hall of Fame in New York for his many outstanding achievements as a producer, along with former fellow band mate Bernard Edwards. CHIC has been nominated to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame six times 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011. Nile Rodgers has recently completed production work on the new Daft Punk album.
