Fall is my favorite time of year. I’m a fan of most types of weather, but the crisp outdoor air and scent from the fall foliage stir up a fantastic nostalgia for me. Maybe this nostalgia comes from growing up in the Coulee Region and raising my kids here. This is the time of apple picking, checking out the local pumpkin patches, and of course, our beloved Oktoberfest. This issue shares more reasons to love this time of year. New 2Do La Crosse contributing writer, Michael Scott, swears that fall is the best time of year to go kayak camping. Check out his experiences on page 18. Fall fundraising events are getting warmed up. One of my favorites, The Great Pumpkin Chase 5K, benefits WisCorps (Wisconsin Conservation Corps). WisCorps provides so much for our community that we can’t pass up this fantastic event! Fall Festival on the Farm

Benefits Grow Your Brain By Amber Miller

Kids love dirt. It ’s a fact of nature, and for good reason: kids who play outside are happier and healthier, as study after study (as well as common sense) concludes. The benefits of simply playing outside are one thing, but taking it one step farther—getting kids in the garden—is even better, and there’s a new organization in La Crosse to help kids do just that. Grow Your Brain, a nonprofit started last summer, has big dreams: to cultivate a

community where children’s health and wellness are the priority. Through gardening, Grow Your Brain creates experiences for children that promote healthy food choices, encourage physical activity, and strengthen their connection to nature and the community. “We are lucky to live in an area ripe with fresh fruit and vegetables grown locally, explains Katie Berkedal, board member and grant writer for Grow Your Brain.

Kids “Although we are surrounded by a bounty of healthy food options here, many our children still suffer from obesity, diabetes, insufficient time outdoors, and other issues associated with poor diet and inactivity.” Through hands-on lessons, taste testing, and visits to a local farm, Grow Your Brain works to reverse that trend. They have worked with local school children and volunteers to install raised garden beds at State Road School and Hamilton/SOTA I where kids can “plan a garden, plant, water, weed, harvest, and finally eat the fruit of their work during school lunch,” reports Berkedal. Peas, beans, and tomatoes grown by the children themselves have upgraded the typical school cafeteria to a bona fide gourmet experience. Grow Your Brain’s long-term goal is to expand to other schools in the area. The organization teams up with Deep Roots Community Farm to get kids even more involved in the gardening experience by providing them with trips to this beautiful local farm. Interestingly, Deep Roots’ grant-funded research has found that children who plant, weed, and harvest kale are more likely to want to eat this oncefeared, dark green super-food, and this willingness to consume fresh fruits and vegetables can have obvious health benefits. But there’s more to it than that. Ana Skemp, owner of Deep Roots Community

Farm observes: “we feel strongly that there is something very special and significant that happens when children spend time in a garden or on the farm. The experience is very soothing and grounding to them, and they leave the garden calm and happy, looking forward to the next time. In today ’s fast-paced world, there is simply not enough free time for children, especially free time outside. Garden experiences also awaken children’s curiosity about science and the natural world.” Of course, every organization needs funding, and Grow Your Brain will be throwing one heck of a fundraiser at the idyllic farm. On September 14, the Fall Festival

on the Farm will be an experience not to be missed. “Autumn on the farm is a beautiful time, and we thought an old fashioned outdoor festival would be very enjoyable for attendees,” explains Skemp. “It felt natural that the farm be the setting for a fundraiser to further Grow Your Brain’s mission of connecting children with gardens and the source of their food. We’ll enjoy local food and drink, live music, and fun activities all while taking in the farm’s peaceful rural setting.” Pogy ’s will cater a locally raised, smoked, pulled-pork sandwich dinner that will “be sure to fill even the hungriest of bellies,” says Berkedal. There will also be a vegetarian dinner option, a beer

and wine tasting, yoga, cooking demonstrations, and a silent auction. Silent auction items include a weekend getaway at a lakeside cabin and a professional teeth whitening. Kids activities will include a bug identification walk led by an entomologist from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, face painting, garden art, and much more! Funds raised from the festival will “go towards garden education at State Road and Hamilton/SOTA I schools in La Crosse and farm experience programming,” explains Jamie O’Neill, Project Director for Grow Your Brain. “During farm programming, children engage in the real daily work of the farm. Next week, for example, the children will plant lettuce and spinach, weed tomatoes, harvest garlic, and cut flowers for a wedding. Programming also allows for ample time for the children to simply explore and enjoy our rural setting—watch a bee pollinate a sunflower, sit with a favorite chicken, or rest in the shade of an apple tree.” The Fall Festival on the Farm will take place on Saturday, September 14 from 4:00-8:00pm at Deep Roots Community Farm located at W4406 County Road YY, just outside of La Crosse. The Great Pumpkin Chase Benefits WisCorps By Wendy Allen

For a small-ish city, La Crosse has its fair share of high quality, well-organized races that benefit not a CEO’s pocketbook, but our own local schools, festivals, and non-profit organizations. A 5K is the perfect place to start—not too long, not too short, and one can walk it and still be done in an hour.

The annual Great Pumpkin Chase is one of our most unique 5K run/ walk races. Held entirely off-road, it treks through a Hixon Forest decked out in her finest fall colors. Next to Charlie Brown’s pumpkin patch, it ’s got to be the next best place to search for the Great Pumpkin.

But who’s behind the Chase? Some flashy, for-profit, traveling race crew that will put on an expensive event and then take our money out of the community for good? Not here. The Great Pumpkin Chase is put on by La Crosse’s own Wisconsin Conservation Corps, or WisCorps (www.wiscorps.org). Executive Director Matt Brantner moved here from Vermont, where he worked for a comparable organization called the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps. That experience planted the seed of a dream to start a non-profit which would provide similar services to a new area of the country, and he already had Wisconsin in mind. Though Madison was an obvious location, Brantner couldn’t imagine basing a conservation corps in the city. “La Crosse had the natural resources right out our back door,” he says, and the city has sure benefitted. Teaming up with Willie Bittner, a trail builder by trade and now operations director, crews have revather than staying in hotels, crews camp out near their project sites, saving time, money, and fuel, as well as instilling independence and leadership skills. “Some are high school dropouts who need to attach to something positive,” says Brantner. “Some are college graduates who are looking for a resume 16

boost to get into the Fish & Wildlife or National Parks Services. They ’re all here for different reasons, but they ’re working side by side on the same crew, learning how to get along, learning from each other.” Patrick Exe started with WisCorps as a crew member in 2010 and is today a second-year crew leader. “I got experience and education hand-inhand. It ’s been an awesome journey, and it ’s gone perfectly with college, too.” After his first year with WisCorps, he decided to go into the outdoor leadership field. Exe says WisCorps is about more than doing projects. “If the youth understand why we make sure camp is picked up or why this is a more sustainable way to build trails, then they ’ll take those things with them and teach their friends and family when they go camping or hiking on their own.” He says only a couple weeks into the season, kids who didn’t know how to slice a vegetable or do their own laundry are cooking for the camp. “You can see they ’re confident and beginning to become a leader.” So how does the Great Pumpkin Chase fit in? “Well, what ’s the best way to show off your work and teach people about what you do?” asks Brantner. “Run a 5k race on the very trails that you built and maintain and improve.” WisCorps relies

Be Active on grants and project matches to do their work and pay their crews, so the Great Pumpkin Chase is both a fundraising event and an important awareness-builder for the organization. Dave Ronsman joined WisCorps as an AmeriCorps member in 2009 as a recruiter, trainer and odds-andends-man as the new non-profit was getting off the ground. He’s familiar with the trails as a runner and cross-country skier and says, “It ’s just exciting to run through the woods. To have a race where I know where the proceeds go and to know you’re creating future trails from the money that ’s raised— that ’s neat. It ’s really about getting people outside on the trails, enjoying nature, making it accessible to them.”

The Pumpkin Chase is just a small way for the La Crosse community to get involved, and knowing it keeps our money right here at home, supporting a greater mission to preserve our natural resources and give our young people important life skills is a wonderful, feel-good bonus. Run local!

Great Pumpkin Chase details: Saturday, October 26th 9:00 a.m. (same day registration begins at 8:15 a.m.) $20 in advance / $25 day of race Prizes for best costume! Food and live music after the race. Register online at www.wiscorps. org /GPC.html.

It ’s also a blast. Being close to Halloween, dressing up in costume is a big part of this fun run. “Men wear dresses, people wear masks or huge costumes,” Ronsman laughs. “ Things that aren’t suited for running at all, but it creates a really fun atmosphere.” He continues, “I can’t emphasize enough how passionate WisCorps is about building trails and developing young people, giving them a chance to have a good job.” “It ’s like a family,” says Exe.

Kayaking the Refuge

By Michael Scott

I am an avid paddler. I have spent several hours in a canoe, but most of my miles have been logged from the cockpit of a sea kayak. I have kayaked in the Pacific Northwest and Mexico and explored the rocky coast of New England and the bayous of Louisiana. I have paddled the mangroves of the Florida Keys and the fjords of Norway. Yet when you ask me where the most desired place to bring blade

to water is, the answer leaps from my throat—the Upper Mississippi Wildlife Refuge. Every year I see more and more paddlers out enjoying the Mississippi River and its backwaters. The secret is slowly leaking out. We are sitting smack dab in the middle of a paddler ’s paradise: 261 river miles bordered by steep wooded bluffs that rise 100 to 600 miles above the river valley. I have found

Be Active adventure out there. I have found kinship with family and friends. But mostly, I have found beauty and peace. The refuge was designed as a safe haven for birds and wildlife, but it works its magic on human beings as well. I try to enjoy a paddle during every season. Yes, even winter. Conditions have been known to close that opportunity, however. The quiet of the refuge in winter is profound and it sticks with you. In spring, the glory of the refuge bursts open with the arrival of millions of migratory birds. Ducks, geese, songbirds, shore birds, raptors, and herons fill the sky. The procession is unforgettable. Summer brings the recreational

boaters and the hard-working tows. On the weekends, sand island camping areas fill up with revelers and a new kind of wildlife watching can be enjoyed. Many are extremely friendly and gregarious, and most, regrettably not all, practice leaving no trace. With the arrival of fall, the paddling season reaches its peak. The boat traffic declines, as well as the likelihood of hot and humid temperatures. The wooded bluffs erupt forth in vibrant shades of red and orange. The cool evenings enhance the campfire and wood smoke as the multitude of stars shine overhead. It ’s not recreation that happens out there; it ’s a spiritual retreat. Lately, the river has provided a

new kind of refuge for me. It now serves as a refuge from the screens and electronics that seem to possess my children. By paddling them out to a sand island, other than a radio or I-Pad for musical accompaniment, technology is shunned and hardly missed. Out there, they swim, explore, build fires, play cards, read, and fish. They talk with my wife and me more. It ’s a time of reconnection and communion. We dub our favorite camping areas as, “Scott Spots”, and they are fondly recalled when viewed from Highway 61. I am not the first to muse on the magic of this area. Mark Twain said in an interview in 1886, “Along the Upper Mississippi, every hour

brings something new. There are crowds of odd islands, bluffs, prairies, hills, woods and villages— everything one could desire to amuse the children. Few people every think of going there, however.” They are coming, Mr. Twain. They are coming, and they will be forever changed by the spectacle of it. Michael Scott is a storyteller and outdoor enthusiast. He and his family can be seen paddling and biking the Driftless Region.

Performance as Therapy

The Old School Variety Show By Steve Hansen

What do you get when you combine an historic brothel with a bored story teller? Therapy, apparently. “I should be telling these stories to a therapist but I tell them to a room full of strangers,” said Michael Scott, creator and host of the Old School Variety Show. Free-form Style Keeps It Fun The Variety Show, true to its name, features music, storytelling, and myriad other forms of 24

entertainment. On a given night, you might see a puppeteer, a solo musician, a storyteller or two, and a band. Past entertainers include magicians, a mentalist, and an escape artist who freed himself from a straitjacket. How does Michael make all this all work together? By letting the artists do their thing. “ The structure is really loose. We don’t rehearse at all. I never ask the actors what they ’re going to do.

Arts I just tell them ‘Do what you love to do.’” Michael is not only the host and creator of the Show, but also enjoys performing, as well as the free-form nature of the show. “When I was doing plays, I enjoyed opening night and the cast party afterwards. This is opening night and the cast party at the same time.” A Great Listening Audience Fayme Rochelle and the Waxwings have performed at the Variety Show seven or eight times, she estimated. Why do they keep going back? “We love it so much! Everyone who is there is intently listening,” Fayme said. In addition, the audience shows “a real appreciation for all kinds of art.”

Begun From Boredom Michael started the show in 2007 after an evening out with friends. After looking for some after-dinner entertainment, and finding that live music started at 10 p.m. or later, the group of friends said, “We’ve got nothing to do,” and gave up for the evening. Michael, however, kept thinking of the possibilities. He was active in the Storytelling Guild, but realized that they always drew the same audience. “I wanted to have a show that featured storytelling, but not have storytelling in the title, so people would show up,” he said. Michael told musician Mike Caucutt, another frequent

performer at the Variety Show, about the idea. His idea borrowed from entertainment of times long past, with men in their dinner jackets and ladies in their dinner dresses. Someone would recite a poem, the children might play the violin, someone else would play the piano, and someone would tell a story. But where to hold such an event? The Grand Hotel Ballroom, above the Pearl Street Ice Cream Parlor, was an obvious choice. A former brothel in La Crosse’s bustling lumber and river-port days, the Ballroom was the right size and had the right feel, fostering the theme of after-dinner entertainment. Except for a few shows at the Pump House, the Variety Show has remained at the Ballroom. The most recent show featured the youngest performer yet, Teyah Mallory, age 12. As with the “afterdinner entertainment ” theme of times past, Mike says he’ll continue having children perform. “I joke that children would be part of the performance and then would be put to bed before your uncle had too much to drink and started telling bad jokes,” he said. “I’ll be playing the part of the uncle.” This fall they return to the Ballroom with monthly productions starting in September.

Great Rivers United Way

Your Volunteer Opportunity Source by Heidi Griminger Blanke

Want to volunteer with children? Need to find a place to volunteer within a few miles of your home? The new Great Rivers United Way (GRUW) Get Connected web site lets you pick and choose when and how you volunteer, all with the click of a button. Getting to Know Great River United Way “ The new site brings us to the twenty-first century,” says Jason

Larsen, GRUW Community Impact Coordinator. After you register and log in, you not only browse numerous volunteer opportunities, but you can also “track volunteer hours, set up a personal page with a photo, sign up to help with events like disaster relief,” and more, reports Larsen. The site means volunteers can pinpoint their interests and connect with specific nonprofit agencies, including receiving

2 Volunteer email updates about events and opportunities. Great Rivers United Way serves a five county area: La Crosse, Monroe, Trempealeau, Vernon, and Houston (MN) in areas of health, income, and education. In 2012, over two million dollars was raised and distributed to 73 area programs. Agencies like Coulee Council on Addictions, the Parenting Place, and WAFER Food Pantry all receive funding from GRUW, but those organizations also depend on volunteers to provide maximum services. The Voice of Experience Jon Trapp has been volunteering with GRUW for over fifteen years, starting when he became a campaign volunteer in order to “make a connection to local businesses.” He believes so firmly in GRUW that he took a position on the Board of Directors, including as its chair. Trapp is amazed at the “variety within the member agencies,” specifically the diverse work they do, and finds it rewarding not only to learn about them, but about our community as well. “ Volunteering is a natural extension of giving back,” he points out. “It ’s a great way to meet people who are interested in giving back.” Vicki Gress has been a GRUW volunteer for eight years, including as Fund Distributions Chair. She says “volunteering has always been a part of my life” and appreciates GRUW because she can “learn about

the programs that are out there.” Because GRUW partners with so many agencies, says Gress, you “get a bigger picture of what the need is.” More specifically, volunteers can be put in touch with agencies with which they may not yet be familiar. “Agencies are always very appreciative of volunteers,” Gress states. It ’s as Close as a Click Using the Get Connected web site is simple. Click on the “Agencies” tab to learn more about what that organization does and the ways volunteers can assist. The “Needs” tab allows volunteers to search by zip code or special interests. Choose the “Events” tab and you’ll be directed to one-time

events like back-to-school supplies or blood drives. Just want to browse volunteer opportunities and not receive email updates? That ’s fine, too. Using the GRUW web site is easy, fast, and a superb way to stay connected to the programs you care the most about. The site provides links to all kinds of agencies, not just those affiliated with GRUW. All nonprofit agencies and organizations are encouraged to register with Get Connected. Eventually GRUW hopes to act as a clearinghouse for volunteer spots throughout the Coulee Region. So, hurry and make your way to this outstanding web site (www. gruw.org) where you can find the perfect way to help out in your community. Whether you want to spend a morning every week distributing food packages, an afternoon a month stuffing envelopes, or an occasional few hours helping with various needs, GRUW will make sure you’re connected in exactly the way you want to be. Heidi Griminger Blanke, whose first volunteer job was as a candystriper in the late 1960s, thanks the thousands of volunteers in the Coulee Region for so generously giving their time.

fabulous food, and dance to live music by T.U.G.G. Put on your best costume for a chance to win cash in the costume contest. There will be multiple categories with a $100 cash prize awarded for each category. “We are overly thrilled about the new location. This is going to enhance the scary Halloween décor,” says Boo Bash planner Ellen Sendelbach, owner of Onalaskabased Designing Events, LLC. Traditionally Pearl Street Brewery throws a Halloween party of its own to kick off the release of its Dankenstein beer. All Boo Bash attendees will receive a free bottle of the seasonal brew. When Sendelbach approached Pearl Street Brewery Sales and Marketing Administrator Tami Plourde about combining their parties, Plourde welcomed the opportunity. “We decided to join forces and mutually work toward the same goals,” she says. “ This is a really good opportunity for us to help and give back … and throw a big party, which we like

to do as well!” Organizers expect just thata big party. In the past each event drew about 200 people. “So what we are hoping is that the combined event will mean a much larger crowd,” says Sendelbach. Affordable ticket prices$20/per person and $30/coupleshould also bring in more people to the adults-only party. Pearl Street will offer family-friendly Boowery Tours from October 27-31 for additional fundraising opportunities. “We will donate the proceeds from the Boowery tours to the Boys and Girls Clubs through our Sprouts for Kids foundation,” says Plourde, who notes that the tour is appropriate

for kids of all ages, but they must be accompanied by a parent. In past years, the Boo Bash raised between $5,000 and $8,000 dollars for the Boys and Girls Clubs. Sendelbach hopes total proceeds from this year ’s party and the tours will exceed that amount. Sendelbach sees the Bash as an opportunity to have some scary fun and learn about the Boys and Girls Clubs of La Crosse. “I don’t think many people realize all that the Boys and Girls Clubs do for our community. Sure, they have ball teams and all those great things, but they are also a safe place for kids to go after school. And we have some kids in our community

La Crosse Public Library:Dark Tour By Michael Scott

La Crosse, Wisconsin - Sin City. At least it might have adopted that moniker from around 1850 to 1915. Our little town on the banks of the Mississippi has a sordid past and the La Crosse Public Library ’s Dark Tour is prepared to confess. The Dark Tour is a walking presentation through our historic downtown, uncovering the “dark” and seedy underbelly of our community. Murder, greed, lust, and vice of every variety will be explored on October 15th and 16th at 6:30 and 8:00pm. A tour of this kind was first considered as entertainment for visiting attendees of last year ’s Wisconsin Library Association Conference. But due to tight schedules, the idea was tabled. Library Director, Kelly KriegSigman, knowing the appeal of such a tour, didnʼt want to leave it on the table for long. The award-winning Archives Department at the Main Library, under the direction of Senior Archivist, Anita Doering, went digging for the most scandalous of stories. Yours truly was asked to develop the script. The result is a blushing, educational evening of fun for a cool, autumn evening. When steamboats chugged up and 38

down the river and lumber was king, La Crosse was home to many rough and unruly characters. Saloons dotted the landscape. Along what is now Front and Pearl Streets, numerous brothels operated to satisfy the carnal desires of young and impetuous river men. We can only speculate to the actual number due to the surreptitiousness of these businesses, but we do know that business was booming. In 1913, Ori Sorenson ran for mayor and during his campaign he claimed to have a list of 40 to 50 brothels operating within the city limits. Perhaps a vote for him meant solidarity to clean up the town or it meant he would give you a copy of the list? We can only speculate. Either way, he won the election handsomely. The murder that led to one of the most talked about trials in La Crosse history will also be presented. It was a random and brutal stabbing. The accused was the son of a prominent and respected member of the community, and the trial would become a sensation. The prosecutions opening statement lasted for nearly seven hours. The town was riveted and the verdict would rock the populace. Kelly Krieg-Sigman was excited

Do Local to see this project develop and is hopeful it could be adapted to inform and entertain the numerous visitors and conference attendees that come to La Crosse every year. History and stories build community. For further validation of the Dark Tourʼs gravity, you need only to read the mantra that hangs in Krieg-Sigmanʼs office, “Bad libraries build collections. Good libraries build services. Great libraries build communities.” We have a great library. Our great library is prepared to explore our darker purpose and they hope you will come along for the ride. Again,

the Dark Tour will be presented on October 15th and 16th at 6:30 and 8:00pm. The event is free and you need only to call the Archives Department at the Main Library to register at (608) 789-7100. Michael Scott is a storyteller and local history enthusiast. He also works in a brothel. His Old School Variety Show takes place at The Grand Hotel Ballroom, 207 Pearl Street, a once notorious bawdy house.
