What do heart attacks and gum disease have in common? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Evidence has been building for several years that painless inflammation can cause heart trouble and may even be more dangerous than high cholesterol.â&#x20AC;? This recent quote from the New England Journal of Medicine tells the story of what is becoming the best thinking on the cause of heart disease. The question is... where is the inflammation coming from? There are different reasons for inflammation to occur in our bodies and they are not all bad. The inflammation that occurs after a strenuous bout of exercise is an example of beneficial inflammation (although it may not feel that way at the time). This type of inflammation increases circulation and heat to the sore muscles and actually speeds up the healing process. Inflammation also occurs as a part of an acute infection. An acute infection causes a series of events to occur in the body, one of which is for your liver to increase its production of C-reactive protein (CRP). CRP is a chemical necessary for fighting injury and infection and with severe infections, blood levels of CRP can reach 500 to 1,000 times normal levels. CRP is the bodies acute phase response protein which binds to invading microorganisms allowing your immune system to kill them BUT when

this acute phase response is CHRONICALLY elevated, a number of bad side affects start to occur. Chronic inflammation has been linked to rheumatoid arthritis, strokes, chronic fatigue, heart disease, and diabetes. One of the most frequently overlooked sources of chronic inflammation along with elevated CRP levels, and also one of the easiest to treat, can be found in peoples mouths. Gum disease is a form of chronic inflammation that is so common that many people think it is normal for their gums to bleed when they brush or floss. BLEEDING GUMS are the tell tale sign of chronic inflammation in the mouth and the research is now showing that CRP levels are elevated in people with gum disease. We can no longer continue to think that oral health plays a small role in overall health. The really great news is that treating gum disease is a simple process due to recent advances in technology and an understanding of the proper protocols. As I was sitting with advertiser Karinna Nielsen discussing possible updates to Hawaii Wellness Magazine, she offered amazing insights and wisdom. Hawaii has only two seasons – Summer from May to October and Winter from November to April.. The early Hawaiians named them Kau, the warm season when the sun is almost directly overhead and the weather is warmer and drier and winds blow reliably from the northeast. And Ho’olio, the cooler season when the sun is lower in the south, the winds are more variable and there is more rainfall and cloud cover.

How many times a day do you get frustrated with others or with a particular situation? Wouldn’t it be so much easier if people did what you expected them to do, life had less challenges, and irritating people didn’t exist? What I’ve learned is that the more we want life to go our way, the harder it is when it doesn’t. So much of the stress that we have comes from the inability to adapt to changing situations, and lately, doesn’t it seem that life is shifting and changing a lot? What I’ve found is that the best way to deal with any of life’s challenges is to take charge of how you look at everything you experience. After all, if you can’t control whats going on around you, you do have the ability to control yourself. If you can be open, and flexible enough to look for new perspectives on whatever it is that’s causing you grief, you can consciously transcend anything! What 10 years has taught us: A note from Hawaii Hypnosis Center owners Beverly Craddock and Randy Hampton When people hear that we are hypnotists, they are quick to ask questions or quick to run the other way. With hypnosis, people either are drawn to it or they question it. The people who are interested in hypnosis are generally open minded and eager to explore the power of their own mind. Our instructors have many years of experience and formal training from top institutions in the U.S. and Hawaii, as well as the worldrenowned Wat Po traditional Thai Massage School in Bangkok, Thailand. Thai-Issan Massage Academy is here to help you! It is our goal to empower students to be the best at what they do. To have a dream, to drive creativity and to strive for success. Our Professional Massage Therapy Program is designed to meet the educational requirements for certiﬁcation or licensing in Hawaii.
