here are many benefits to having access to dog parks. In densely populated areas with heavy traffic and leash laws, it can be difficult to stimulate your dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s need for safe socialization and exercise. Dog parks give us and our dogs the freedom to run, play, and socialize off-leash in a safe and secure place. However, not all dog parks are equal, and not all dogs do well at every park. There are key aspects to examine before determining if a dog park is the best place for your pup. Cleanliness: All dog parks should have dog waste bags and trashcans for owners to clean up after their dog. If these supplies are not provided, please bring your own and encourage other owners to clean up as well. Drinking water: A good dog park will have a water source with clean bowls. If the water is frequently dirty or inadequate, it is recommend-

ed to bring your own water and collapsible bowl. If it is a shared water source, it is recommended that your change the water out before your dog drinks from it. Shared water and dirty water can spread illnesses and bacteria. Also, be sure that your dog does not drink out of standing water like puddles and ponds. Shade: It is very important that in the warmer months that there are accessible shaded areas for dogs to rest if they begin to overheat. Size & Crowd: A dog park that is too large, can pose unforeseen problems if your dog wanders too far from you. It is recommended that you can spot your dog quickly in an emergency. Furthermore, a park that is too small can cause problems between dogs that cannot move away from each other easily. If a dog park has too many dogs in a small space, that can create a targeting environment. Dogs need to be able

to walk away in situations that make them uncomfortable. If they are not able to move away effectively, it can cause altercations between dogs. Behavior: Pay attention to the environment in the park before you take your dog inside. Be aware of other dogs behaving inappropriately or strangely. If you notice anything that seems like it could be a problem, it might be best to avoid the situation, or at least be extra aware while you are there. Also, if your dog’s behavior changes and they are displaying fearful, agitated, or even aggressive behaviors, it might be best to leave the dog park.

Security: You want to make sure that all fences are secure and maintained. Also, be sure that all gates are double gated to reduce the chance of any dogs escaping. Small dog areas: If your dog is under 20 lbs. it would be wise to find a park that has a separate small dog area. If your small pup enjoys playing with bigger dogs, that’s great! However, not all big dogs do well with little ones. Keep in mind that some dogs and breeds have a tendency for pray drive. It would be a good idea to visually survey the park for potential issues and ask owners if their dogs will be okay with your little guy present. Not all dog parks are going to meet the needs for every dog or dog owner. If you frequent one specific dog park, and consistently run into problems, it might be time for a change in routine. If you have easy access to multiple dog parks, try out a few of them at different times of the day to find the best one for your dog. It is important that we listen to our dogs. Just because a dog park seems great to us as humans doesn’t mean your dog is always going to feel the same. When you find the right one, you will know it.

Understanding Pack Behavior in Your Small Dog By Julie Ruggles, Julie’s Pooch Pad

e’ve all done it. Referred to our little dogs as our “furry children”. After all, our pets want to be and should be a part of our families. We treat them like babies, dress them, dote on them, and give them endless love and attention. This must be what they want. Unfortunately, dogs can’t tell us differently and don’t come with instruction manuals. So how do we know what they really want? The fact is, our dogs really don’t want to be treated as furry children. They are not humans: they are descendants of wolves. In fact, scientific studies have proven that domestic dogs are 99.9% genetically identical to the gray wolf. Pack instincts, being survival behaviors, are too deeply rooted in the primitive brain to prevent them from passing on. It is obvious that dogs are social animals and

want to feel a part of our family “pack”. So, how are their needs different from humans? As pack animals, dogs feel most comfortable in a well-defined social structure where they each know their place in a hierarchy. When we don’t honor these needs, a dog suffers from extreme confusion, frustration and feelings of instability. If there is no clear leader, he may feel his very survival is threatened, and will feel compelled to fill the void and become Pack Leader. Once your dog feels he is Pack Leader, be prepared for many adverse consequences: misbehavior, disobedience and signs of disrespect. This situation should be avoided at all costs.

Dogs use eye contact to demonstrate dominance. • He bares his teeth and/or growls at you; This is the ultimate disrespect. Such behavior should never be tolerated. If your dog exhibits these signs, how do you take back control and establish yourself as Pack Leader? Here are some Do’s and Don’ts. Do’s:

How do you know if your dog has taken on the leadership role?

Lead through example. Do what pack leaders do: eat first, take the best sleeping spots, go through a doorway first, and “move” a dog out of your way instead of walking around or stepping over him.

If your dog exhibits any of these classic behaviors, he is the Pack Leader of your family: (Use of the male pronoun is for simplicity, refers to both genders).

Be calm and assertive. Adopt a dominant posture, energy, attitude and tone of voice. Showing leadership is as much an attitude as it is a set of behaviors.

• He races out of doors and doorways ahead of you. • He completely ignores your commands. • He gives you a blank stare or walks away when you call his name. • He humps you or your guests. • He demands your constant attention through nudges, leaning on you, sitting on your foot or whining • He barks excessively, especially if you leave the house (since no one leaves the Pack Leader!) • He lacks respect for your territory: He refuses to move out of your way. He gets on furniture or the bed (your territory) without permission. • He lacks respect for your personal space: he walks on top of you, gets too close, gets between you and another person. • He stares at you and won’t avert his eyes.

Let your dog know what he can and cannot do. Use “corrections” to discourage bad behaviors. Catch him in the act, then give a one word stern command or do a quick pull on his leash. The point is to startle him, then re-direct his behavior. You can also try techniques used by wolf packs to communicate in your dog’s language. The alpha female placed unruly pups on their backs and held them until they stopped resisting to force them to realize they are subordinate. Don’ts: Never get angry, yell or hit your dog. This will only scare him. Don’t use sentences to correct him. The point is to get his attention, not have a conversation with him. Becoming Pack Leader is neither an immediate nor a simple process. You have to prove yourself and earn the respect and trust of your dog. You also have to “unteach” his bad behav-

iors and start rewarding more desirable ones. Once he accepts you as Pack Leader and knows his boundaries, he will be the obedient pooch you desire. If you are going to take on the responsibility of pet ownership, it is imperative to understand the workings of a dog pack mentality. Not knowing this causes nothing but problems. You owe it to yourself and to your dog to understand your differences so you will enjoy a happy, healthy relationship with one another. It’s worth the effort! “H

olistic Medicine” has come to mean any of the non-conventional medical systems. Alternative and Complementary are also terms that are used to describe these medical therapies. At this time all nutritional supplement tends to be classified as Holistic and it is assumed that a “Holistic” practitioner is familiar with all of the different medical systems and products available to the general public. The multitude of supplements flooding the market make it almost impossible for anyone to be familiar with all of the products. The term “Holistic Medicine” doesn’t refer to any particular therapy; it is more a way of looking at the case. Holistic, in its broadest sense, means that all of the symptoms are taken into account in the case evaluation. This includes mental, physical and emotional symptoms. The entire symptom picture is recognized as inter-related, that is, the whole animal is considered. Examples of therapies that fall under the Holistic umbrella include Acupuncture, Western and Chinese Herbal Medicine, Chiropractic and Homeopathy.

By their very nature these therapies tend to be “Holistic”. They focus on evaluating the entire patient. They work by stimulating the immune system and the medications used are usually of a non-synthetic or unrefined nature as opposed to modern drug therapies. Many Holistic practitioners focus on preventive strategies as well as working on current problems. Issues that come up are diet, vaccination protocols and lifestyle. Some of these new therapies may be applied in a very “conventional” way, but the results are much more significant if the principles of a Holistic approach are also applied to the case. In my experience all theories are just a way to explain observed phenomenon. And different approaches are not necessarily mutually exclusive. It is important to understand the strength and weakness of each approach so you can determine what the most appropriate therapy is for any given situation. Holistic Therapies tend to all have several things in common that differentiate them from conventional medical therapy.

Self healing A concept common to alternative therapies is that the individual has the ability to heal themselves and so therapy should be directed at aiding that process. Therefore the doctor does not cause the healing to occur; they only facilitate the process. The more options the doctor has available to offer the patient, the more efficient the doctor can be at affecting the curative process. Symptoms Health is not the absence of symptoms, but the absence of disease. Many approaches view symptoms in quite a different way than we do in Western medicine. Symptoms are created by the body when it is in the process of trying to reestablish a state a health. We all recognize that a fever, for example, is a positive process when a microbial invader is present. The elevated body temperature will have a negative effect on the organism and help to activate the host immune system. A prolonged fever, however, can create problems of its own. The conventional approach is to stop the process, that is, give a medi-

cine to bring down the fever. This action will unfortunately shut down the healing process and prevent the individual from being able to rid itself of the pathogen. The holistic approach is to try to figure out why the body was unable to finish the healing process on its own and help it to do so. In chronic disease situations this approach can often take longer than the conventional approach, but the individual will be healthier for finishing the process on its own. It has “learned” how to effect a curative reaction from start to finish. Our knowledge of the details of healing are not yet complete, so the attempt to micromanage the process tends to perpetuate the state of ill-health and although those particular symptoms may be resolved the individual tends to continue to have problems that recur or manifest elsewhere. This is not another disease, just another manifestation of the state of ill-health. The individual often presents with acute symptoms that are not a disease itself, but simply an acute manifestation of a chronic disease state. That is, the individual is never well, they

t’s normal for pets to be anxious when they visit the vet, right? While common, it should not be accepted as a norm. Dr. Marty Becker has been an advocate and champion for “Fear Free” veterinary visits and has helped usher this new initiative into practices today. Low-stress visits are possible when you and your veterinarian work together as a team. In a Bayer Veterinary Healthcare Usage study, 37% of dog owners and 58% of cat owners said their pets hate going to the vet. They also found that 26% of dog owners and 38% of cat owners said that just thinking about going to the vet was stressful. This number can reduce or delay visits that could impact the health of a pet. The first step in creating reduced stress for veterinary visits is to be able to recognize signs of anxiety in your pet. Pet parents and their health-

care team should be able to identify these signs to be able to cater to the pet’s emotions and provide them with appropriate coping mechanisms. hile I am not a Buddhist, I often tell my clients that if I did believe in reincarnation I would want to come back as one of their pets. The amount of care, compassion, and dedication my clients show to their pets is unmatched as they treat their furkids as part of the family. Yet even with this care and love displayed, one of the most common medical problems I still face in my veterinary practice is dental disease. It is estimated by the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) that by the age of three, the vast majority of dogs and cats have evidence of periodontal disease that will generally worsen with age without intervention. Dental disease can be both a sign of, and a cause of disease elsewhere in the body. When I visit the dentist for my bi-annual cleanings, the dental hygienist who scolds me for not flossing enough reminds me to think of flossing your heart when you are flossing your teeth. Her point is that dental disease can lead to infection elsewhere in the body including the heart, kidneys, bladder, and liver. Thus, it is of vital importance for people and their pets to prioritize their dental health. Dental care is generally divided into two categories, home care and professional dental cleanings. Home care can make a significant difference in the progression of dental disease. Dental disease is often a function of diet, mouth conformation, a pet’s immune system, and preventative measures taken or lack thereof. The gold standard for pets as it is with people is daily teeth brushing. Full disclosure: I do not brush my pets teeth with consistency and I would feel like a hypocrite if I chastised my clients who do not manage daily teeth brushings on their pets either. There are, however, other products that can be used that benefit oral health. Additives to water that often contain chlorhexiderm will disinfect bacteria in the mouth when they drink. There

are diets and chews that also help remove plaque through mechanical and chemical means. Additionally, there are probiotics which contribute to oral hygiene. It is vital to discuss home care with your veterinarian so that he or she can help you tailor an individual home dental care plan suitable and realistic for you and your pet’s lifestyle. Even with the best home care, professional dental cleanings are generally necessary during the life of a pet. The major difference between human and veterinary dental care is the requirement of general anesthesia for pets While there are groomers and other individuals who will offer “dental cleanings” without general anesthesia, the AVMA recognizes the medical necessity of cleaning below the gum line to combat periodontal disease which is not possible in an awake pet. Consequently, the AVMA does not recommend or encourage dental cleanings without the use of general anesthesia. As with all anesthetic procedures, ask questions about who will be performing the procedure, what type of monitoring

equipment will be used and who is monitoring, whether an intravenous catheter will be placed, and whether IV fluids will be administered. Dog Parks Continue to Grow

hese parks provide a wonderful opportunity for dogs to exercise and socialize with other canines. Some dog parks are private and for members only with fees and strict enforcement of park rules. Private parks are rare. Parks are public. They are the result of grassroots movements and rely largely on users to adhere to rules, clean up after the dogs, and keep the peace by removing aggressive animals. Without the screening required by private parks, there is no way of knowing if all public park participants are properly socialized and are current on vaccinations. Most parks operate smoothly. Some parks provide space for dogs to run off leash while others set the stage for positive interaction among pets and people. Note: Some parks may not be completely fenced. Usage may be limited to residents of the particular area.

Adopt a Rescued Dog

There are several benefits to adopting a rescued dog. Many rescued dogs are mature adults who are housebroken. Adult dogs are past the stage of chewing on your shoes and furniture. They are loyal to the hand that feeds them, shelters them, and loves them. Give a loving pet a second chance – adopt. Listed on the following pages are telephone contacts for individual dog breed rescues. If the breed you are looking for is not listed, it may be because the contact for that breed has declined to be in the book or we are not aware of them. Keep in mind when calling these contacts that in many cases you are calling someone’s home. Most of these people are volunteers who donate their time for the love of the breed. Be respectful of the hours you call. Also, be aware that it may take time to get a response to your call.
