PUBLISHER’S NOTE

A

s I wake up to chillier mornings and feel the “crisp” back in the air, I can’t help but think ahead to the approaching holiday season. It’s my favorite time of the year, and we have gathered some really unique things for our annual “holidog” gift guide, starting on page 12. Most of the items can be purchased in the Northern Virginia area, so please help support our local economy. I’m thrilled that we have such a wide selection of gifts—everything from pet safety to smoothies. My two dogs, Chance and Nikki, will be getting some great gifts from this year’s guide. Looking for a new pup? Look no further than our “Home for the Holidays” article on page 18. Beth Bates, founder of Good Dogz.org, features many good places to start your search. But

please read our Dos and Don’ts sidebar for tips on a successful holiday adoption. It’s never a good idea to give pets as gifts. Instead, consider a donation in the person’s honor to a local animal welfare group. You’re invited to join Good Dogz for its Home 4 the Holidays event on November 6 at the Reston Town Center from 11AM - 4PM. Many rescue organizations will be on hand with adoptable dogs awaiting their forever home in time for the holidays. I’d also like to thank everyone who participated in our first annual NOVADog Food Drive. With the help of our generous sponsors, we raised an amazing 1,700 lbs of dog food and $800 in cash donations for our winning top rescue, the Lab Rescue of the LRCP. For more information on

the food drive and to see photos from our doggie happy hour donation ceremony, check out page 7. Lastly, I would like to thank all of our readers and patrons for making 2010 such a great year. Thank you for reading our publication and for the many encouraging comments and article suggestions that I receive, almost daily, from our diverse readership. I’d like to wish all of you health and happiness, and we hope you enjoy the merriment of the season with your favorite canine friends. ND

Perfect Leash

Reviewed by Sophia Malakooti The Perfect Leash is quite true to its name. I probably own more leashes than any pet store sells. Since I adopted my German Shepherd/Terrier mix named Lilo, I have tried many different leashes. Some leashes gave me rope burns, developed mold from rain or swimming trips, or were chewed apart. The Perfect Leash is different from the others—it looks like it is made of rubber, when, in fact, it is made of a durable proprietary polyurethane material. When my dog pulls as we walk, I simply snap the leash back effortlessly and she gently bounces back, just as a bungee cord

operates. It is a flexible leash, one that stretches a bit as a dog sniffs or reaches for something. The leash looks very basic, yet is very sturdy and durable. I took my dog to the beach for the first time this summer, and we swam in the ocean with The Perfect Leash. It is waterproof, dries quickly, does not absorb odors, cleans easily, and is strong against UV rays and extreme cold and heat. The Perfect Leash comes in four different leash styles: The Walker (35’’), The Heeler (14’’), The Loop Lead (4’, 6’), and The Grooming Lead (29’’). The only one thing I dislike about The Walker is its handling. When my dog and I are in a new environment walking, I like to wrap my leash around my hand to bring her in closer to me for a better handle. With this leash, it is difficult to do that. For that reason, I recommend “The Heeler” which has a better handle to keep your dog close by your side. October is Fire Prevention Month Installing “rescue alert stickers” may seem sufficient, but in the event of a house fire, pets instinctively look for a hiding place and may take longer to locate. Keep pets near an entrance where firefighters can easily find them. Look for areas in your home where pets might start accidental fires such as stove knobs or loose wires. Never leave them alone or unattended around burning candles or your lit fireplace. “Even if the firemen were able to get pets safely out of the burning structure, they would not be able to revive them without a pet oxygen mask,” says Ines DePablo, Certified PetTech Instructor, and owner of Wag’N Enterprises, who sells the masks and also maintains the 02 Fur Life Fund. This fund allows you to make a donation to help fire, EMS and police departments receive needed pet oxygen masks. PW County Advisory Committee Formed in September 2009, the Prince William Animal Advisory Committee helps address animal welfare within the county and is made up of 13 appointees, including one representative from each district, as well as a representative nominated by the chairman; a veterinarian; a member of the Prince William SPCA; a member from an animal rescue organization operating within Prince William County; one representative from the pet retail, boarding, or grooming industry; and one county police officer or employee of the Prince William County Animal Shelter. The committee’s purpose is to advise the county on improvements to animal care policies, increase community outreach, and seek outside grant funding for animal welfare initiatives. It will also provide support to Animal Control/Care Services and make recommendations on programs, classes, and special events that will provide the best possible welfare services to the community. Half-way into its first year, the committee is making progress on many initiatives: to ensure the spay/neuter program is being followed for all pets adopted through the shelter; to increase redemption of shelter pets; address the increasing feral cat population within the county; and formalize the volunteer program at the animal shelter. “We are an energized group focused on helping the county with its animal welfare programs. Our first year initiatives are producing great results in just a short period of time. We believe they will bring more involvement from the community in ensuring that pets within the county are well cared for,” says Kim Campbell, pet industry representative. The committee meets once a month at the Prince William County Government Center, and the first 15 minutes are open for the public to attend and voice their animal welfare concerns or ask questions. Meeting dates can be found at www.pwcgov.org within the Police Department subpages. ND

November Marks 6th Annual National Pet Cancer Awareness Month Every year in the United States, millions of pets are diagnosed with and treated for cancer. For the sixth year in a row, Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI), the nation’s oldest and largest provider of pet health insurance, seeks to increase awareness about the prevalence, detection, and treatment of pet cancer by designating November as Pet Cancer Awareness Month. To raise funds for pet cancer research, VPI has once again partnered with the Animal Cancer Foundation (ACF) and organized bicoastal pet cancer awareness walks. (www. acfoundation.org) According to VPI, the most common form of canine cancer is Lymphosarcoma, with 34,457 cases reported between 2003 and 2009. In the Summer 2010 issue of NOVADog, we provided some tips to detect cancer early. Pet owners should be attentive to any growing lump or sore that fails to heal, drastic changes in a pet’s appetite or weight, unusually strong odors coming from a pet, discharge or bleeding from any body opening, difficulty chewing or swallowing, or an unwillingness to exercise. First Annual Food Drive a Success!

Thank you to all who participated in our first annual NOVADog Food Drive. We raised more than 1,700 lbs. of dog food and $800 in cash donations for the winning rescue— Lab Rescue of the LRCP. It was voted the top local rescue by NOVADog readers and Facebook fans. The Lab Rescue graciously decided to share the dog food with the other top rescues in attendance at the doggy happy hour, held in Alexandria at Foster’s Grille on August 18. Coming in a close second, was the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation. Also in the top five were Lucky Dog Rescue, Friends of Homeless Animals, and Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue. Pleased to Meet You! Teach your dog to shake hands in three simple steps

T

eaching your dog how to shake hands is relatively simple. Like all multi-step tricks or tasks, we start by breaking down the task into small achievable steps. Once the dog can accomplish each step, we put it all together to produce the complete trick. You can teach “shake” with a clicker or with any marker of your choice. A clicker can be a more effective way to teach a trick because it’s clear and precise. If you choose not to use a clicker, substitute a marker word of your choice (“yes,” “good,” etc.) to show your dog that he did the right thing. Here’s what you need to do: 1. With a clicker and a handful of your dog’s favorite treats, ask your dog to sit facing you. Gently lift his paw, click, and treat. Repeat this step many times during the next couple of days. The purpose of this step is to help your dog understand the desired behavior. 2. Now, time to see if your dog remembers Step 1. Do not lift his paw. Instead offer him your open hand and wait patiently for him to lift, or

just move, his paw. Even the smallest movement should result in a click and a treat. You can tap his leg or his paw, to try to illicit a response. (Here’s a little trick: If your dog won’t lift his paw, try holding a treat over to the side of his body so that he has to shift his weight over to one side as he reaches for the treat. This should cause his other paw to lift slightly off the ground.) 3. Once your dog is lifting his paw every time, you are ready to add the verbal cue. Now say “shake” right before you lower your hand down in front of your dog. Don’t forget to click and treat every time. ND Keri Putonen is owner and lead trainer at Unleashed Abilities, a Falls Church-based company emphasizing positive reinforcement and a balanced approach to dog training. She also teaches small group classes at Wylie Wagg in Tyson’s Corner and Fairfax. For more information about private sessions or group classes, call 703.371.9800 or visit www.unleashedabilities.com.

take a bow After you have completely mastered the hand shake, try adding this to your dog’s skill set. Taking a Bow:

➊ Have dog stand a couple of feet in front of you and have a treat ready. ➋ Hold treat with both hands and move toward his front paws while saying “bow” or “take a bow.” ➌ When your dog moves his head down to take the treat and is in the bow position, click and reward. ➍ Be patient and consistent.

How to Walk Your Eager Greeter By Hilary Bolea

Whenever I take my dog Lucky on a walk, he pulls something awful on his leash. I end up being tugged in every direction. What can I do to curb this habit? QUESTION

High-energy dogs need to

zoom around at top speed, tug, wrestle, bite, and tackle each other… and they need all of that about every three hours!

Hilary Bolea is a certified professional dog trainer, and the owner of Old Town Dog Behavior, which provides in-home positive dog training throughout the DC metro area. Reach her at 202.725.5598 or hilary@ oldtowndogs.com.

10 Northern Virginia Dog

If your right arm ANSWER is longer than your left after your morning walk, you’re not alone! Leash-pulling is a frequent problem I hear from my clients, and I really enjoy working on it because it makes such a big difference in quality of life for the dog and owner. Here are some tips to make the daily trek more fun for everyone. Chasing, Tugging, and Wrestling, Oh My! The single most important thing

you can do for leash-pulling is to make sure that your dog is getting enough of the right kind of exercise. A walk is great for you and me, but high-energy dogs need to zoom around at top speed, tug, wrestle, bite, and tackle each other—and they need all of that about every three hours! I usually spend the first part of every training session showing my clients how to really play hard with their dogs. Do that for just five minutes—before your walks—and you will have a whole different dog. The Sniff and Mosey. If you’re walking longer than 5-10 minutes, I suggest trying a flexible leash and a harness, which will give your dog the freedom to zoom ahead and sniff. Taking a dog for a 30 minute walk on a short leash would be like spending a half hour in your favorite bookstore, but handcuffed to someone who won’t let you stop and look at any good books—frustrating! Positive Training: Treats on Your Left! Here’s an easy way to get your | Fall 2010

dog to walk by your side: Start in your house, with a pocket full of treats, but no leash. Put a treat in your closed left hand, and just start walking around. Your dog will follow you with his nose in your hand. After a few steps, click, and give him the treat. Then re-load your hand, and keep walking. Sometimes click and give him the treat after three steps, sometimes seven, sometimes 12. It should always be random and unpredictable. Soon, you will have a dog who loves walking next to you, and a good hand signal—a fist, down by your left side. In order to take this outside, follow these simple rules: Train before feeding your dog and after exercise, make sure to practice in a boring location (where your dog has already had a few minutes to sniff), and keep it brief—no more than five minutes. Aversive Training: Other Way! As a positive trainer, I never use pain or fear when working with dogs. But I’m not above using the occasional aversive consequence, like a time out. Try this: Take your dog to a nice green area where she likes to explore. Put her on a flat (non-extending) leash, and put the leash around your wrist, with your arm relaxed, hanging at your side. Wherever she wants to walk, follow her. But here’s the catch: The instant your arm starts to lift away from your body (because she’s pulling), say, “Oops!” (That’s the warning cue.) Keep walking with her for two more seconds. (That’s her thinking time.) If she’s still pull-

ing after two seconds, say “Uh-oh!” (That’s the marker. It means that the aversive is coming.) At the same time, make a 180-degree turn, and walk off briskly in the other direction. (That’s the aversive). After a few steps in the opposite direction, start following your dog again, wherever she wants to go. The lesson is, “We can go wherever you want, but you can’t pull on me to get there.” Some dogs pick this up in minutes, while others take dozens of repetitions, but she will eventually learn that pulling is not a successful strategy to get where she wants to go. When it has to be Perfect. We all have times when we can’t devote our attention to dog training, but lunging is just not an option. So, if you’re meeting Great Aunt Mildred for a walk in the park, try using a head halter like the Gentle Leader. When properly fitted, they allow your dog to pant, drink, carry toys, and take treats, but they make it almost impossible to pull. Some of these methods are easier to learn from a trainer than an article, but take a crack at it, and call me if you have questions! ND

Making the Season a Little Brighter for Homeless Dogs

I

t’s that time of year again. Time to think about festivities and gift giving, time with family and tons of food. The holidays are a time when people get a little cheerier and a little more giving, and, many times, this leads to thoughts of adopting a new fourlegged friend to add to the family. Opinions vary on whether the holidays are the best time to bring home a new dog. For some, it’s a very busy time with lots of people and commotion. There are candles and Christmas trees and wrapping paper all around. For others, it’s a time when they feel they’re ready to open their hearts and homes to a homeless dog in need. Are the holidays the right time for a new dog?

Challenges During the Holidays

for the

The holidays present certain challenges for rescue organizations ranging from a drop in the number of adoptions to adopters looking to give dogs as gifts. Friends of Homeless Animals explains that: “It is important to make sure adopters have time to devote before taking on a new family member during already hectic holiday times.” “Sadly, we see many great dogs surrendered in rural areas around the holidays because families reach the end of the year— and the end of their disposable incomes. So, finding enough

homes for all our fantastic dogs is a neverending challenge!” explains Mirah Horowitz, founder and president of Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. “Holidays can be a very stressful time for new dogs in homes. In my eight years with this rescue, it never fails that we will get that phone call: ‘We got this puppy for Christmas. It’s not house trained, and it’s nipping at my kids’ feet.’ The stories go on,” Debbie Thomas of Virginia German Shepherd Rescue states. Despite the obstacles, these organizations are working tirelessly to put policies in place to help make each adoption safe for the dogs in their care and successful for the families.

The National Campaign According to the Helen Woodward Animal Center, sponsor of the Home 4 the Holidays campaign, 1,363,638 animals found new forever homes as a result of the nationwide 2010 adoption drive. As stated on the Home 4 the Holidays website, “More families bring pets into their homes during the holidays than at any other time of year. What better gift can any of us give during the holiday season than to give a home to an orphaned animal? Nobody wants to think about an orphan waking up behind bars on a holiday morning. In the past some shelters have discouraged families from adopting pets during the holidays, forcing them to support the puppy mill industry. Iams Home 4 the Holidays shelters work together to match the needs of the pets with the desires of the families. Everybody wins.”

Ron Chapple

GoodDogz.org Gets Involved At GoodDogz.org, we believe that every family’s situation is different and that with proper adopter screening, education, and family preparation, the holidays can be the right time to adopt a new dog. For seven years, GoodDogz. org has participated in the Home 4 the Holidays program, bringing 30+ rescue groups and shelters to the Reston Town Center to be part of our annual multi-group adoption event. Each group is asked to follow its own guidelines for holiday adoptions and raise awareness about the efforts of dog rescue in the DC area. This year, the event will be held on Saturday, November 6 from 11AM - 4PM, and we hope that it’s even bigger and better than last year. Our multi-group adoption events are designed to offer a fun, family-friendly environment

where families can meet adoptable dogs in a positive atmosphere. To date, GoodDogz.org estimates that we have helped more than 1,500 dogs find forever homes as a result of events like Home 4 the Holidays.

Finding Your New Best Friend There are hundreds of all-breed and purebred animal rescue organizations in the metro DC area that are willing to work with families thinking about adopting a new dog. Each has its own adoption process and policies, which may include special provisions during the holidays. Please check with the individual group to find out about its policies. Do’s and Don’ts Please... Thinking about adopting a dog during the holidays? Here are a few key points to think about:

Do consider adopting a new dog as a family decision, during the holidays or any other time of year.

Do make sure that your new dog has a quiet, safe place to be during holiday festivities.

Do think about the time you can devote to your new dog during the holidays. You may want to wait until life gets back to normal.

Don’t adopt a dog as a gift for another person. Don’t over stimulate your new dog. He will need ample time to acclimate to your home and your family.

Don’t leave holiday foods, gift wrap, decorations, plants, or candles where your new dog can get to them. They are very dangerous for dogs.

Another great place to start your search is www.petfinder.org. It houses a directory of adoptable dogs organized by gender, size, breed, and state and provides information about the dogs and the rescues that care for them. ND A dog lover since childhood, Beth Bates has enjoyed working with many local dog rescue organizations during the past 12 years. The need to offer support and services to the rescue community prompted her to create GoodDogz.org. She has combined her compassion for homeless dogs and her experience in business management and technology to bring resources to the pet adoption community and tools to help dogs find and stay in loving homes.

Lake George provides a variety of water, wilderness, and in-town activities for dogs and their owners.

Don’t Miss This...

Relaxing Retreat

Peak Fall Foliage: The trees begin to turn by the second week of September with peak foliage in the lake region usually occurring the first or second week in October. Foliage is at its peak farther north in the Adirondack mountains as early as late September.

Less than a day’s drive from DC, in the foothills of the Adirondacks By Joa n H u s t a c e Wa l k e r

I

mmense pines loom ominously overhead as the night wraps the twisting mountainside road in inky blackness. It doesn’t help that it just finished pouring and a dense fog is rising from the pavement...and we have no clue how to find the turnoff for our weekend cabin. True to his word, however, proprietor Chandler Atkins has left the light on for our waterfront cabin at The Elms in Lake Luzerne, NY. As we roll up to our weekend escape, our two “city” dogs, who have to this point, spent their travels in hotel rooms, find the scents and sounds of the Adirondacks and the lazy bend in the Hudson River terribly exciting and are exceedingly reluctant to settle down for a cozy night’s sleep. Then there’s the fact that virtually every cabin around us—though quite secluded— has dogs. Our dogs know this and a brilliant, crystal blue morning reveals a Shar Pei in Cabin Ten headed out for a morning canoe trip; a Pug and a Beagle from Cabin Five out and about for a frolic; yellow and

black Labs in Cabin Seven headed down to the private beach; and a Golden Retriever in Cabin Two watching the fog swirling on the water with her owner. It’s not a question of if dogs are accepted in the foothills of the Adirondacks; dogs (and their owners) are welcomed here. A seven-hour drive from the metro-DC area, the Lake Luzerne and neighboring Lake George areas make for a terrific dog owners’ weekend retreat. Whether you and your dog enjoy wilderness activities or prefer to relax and take in the riotous colors of fall and the crisp mountain air while dining al fresco with your canine, there’s something for everyone.

Mountainous Meanderings Looking for a short, moderate hike that provides spectacular lake views? Take on Deer Leap at 1.1 miles. Or, are you and your canine in shape for a more challenging hike up Buck Mountain (3.3 miles) or Tongue Mountain (Northwest Bay Trail 5.4 miles)? The Lake Luzerne and Lake

George areas have a variety of well-marked and maintained mountain and lakeside trails for every athletic ability. For maps and guidebooks, locations of trail heads, hiking tips, and gear, visit the Adirondack Mountain Club (814 Goggins Road, Lake George, NY 12845; 1.800.395.8080; www. adk.org). Prefer to enjoy scenic views without any climbing? A favorite fall foliage drive is on Route 28 to Blue Mountain Lake, where the open-air Adirondack Museum is located. The view from the museum is a destination in itself. Directions: from Lake George, take the Adirondack Northway (Exit 21 or 22) and head north. Take Exit 23 (Warrensburg), make a left off the exit and then turn right on Route 9. Follow Route 9 through Warrensburg and then take a left onto Route 28. Follow Route 28 to Blue Mountain Lake and enjoy!

lakes (Lake 2 and Lake 4—yes, those are really the names of these lakes) offer boat rentals, as well as fishing gear. From canoes and row boats to pontoons and motorboats, boat rentals welcome well-behaved dogs, just don’t forget the doggie life-jacket. (For a list of dog friendly waterfront cottages with boat rentals, see “If You Go” on page 23.) Enjoy being out on the water but rather not rent a boat? Maybe you’d like to see the million dollar mansions that dot the shores of Lake George—and are only visible from the water? If you have a small dog (and you’ve brought your dog’s carrier), check out Lake George Shoreline Cruises (www.lakegeorgeshoreline.com; 518.668.4644). This company offers one hour historic sightseeing cruises, as well as one hour bay cruises. The only caveat to these tours is that dogs are only allowed on board if they are contained for the duration of the tour in a carrier. The main avenue through town, Canada Street, is lined with interesting shops, (Perfect places to get that rubber tomahawk for your nephew and a stuffed moose for your niece.) You can also find large, comfortable park benches on which to rest or simply people (and dog) watch. As with most areas in the United States, local laws restrict dogs from entering establishments that prepare and serve food; however, many restaurants along Lake George offer outdoor eating areas and welcome dogs and owners. For some particularly dog-friendly eateries (and some special treats for dogs), drop by DJ’s Dogs (176 Canada Street) and order a “Show Dog” or “Top Dog” for a lunch treat on the restaurant’s covered back porch, or visit the Adirondack Pub & Brewery (33 Canada Street), an award-winning microbrewery and restaurant that welcomes pups of all sizes on their outdoor patio. A little farther up the street at Caffe Vero Coffee Roasters (185 Canada Street), the owners support a local rescue, Labs and Mutts Rescue, and you can, too, with any spare change you might have. In addition to the most amazing lattes in Lake George (every cup is crafted with exceptional latte art), Caffe Vero’s food can be ordered for carryout and enjoyed on one of many large park benches lining the street or taken to the Shepherd Park for a picnic.

Breathe and Relax Of course, you can also enjoy your time in the Adirondacks by doing nothing at all. Most waterfront cabins come equipped with outdoor grills, individual fire pits, screened-in porches, and kitchenettes. Kick back in a spacious Adirondack chair in front of the lake with your dog(s) by your side, and watch as the last rays of the day disappear across the water and dip behind the mountains for a spectacular display of color. Every night and every dawn is crisp and colorful, and the most noise you’ll hear is perhaps the snuffling of the neighboring cabins’ dogs, out on an early morning walk. n a world that values perfection, most of us are well aware that perfection is impossible to achieve. Yet, when it comes to choosing a companion animal, most people look for a perfect, healthy pet and generally won’t consider a pet with special needs or physical challenges. This anthology presents 11 stories of animals, who, either through birth or injury, may be less than perfect by society’s standards—and the humans who have welcomed these animals into their hearts and homes—might change your mind about what makes a perfect pet. This book is more than just another collection of heartwarming pet stories. I’ve always believed that animals come into our lives to teach us, and you will learn a lot from these wonderful pets (with often seemingly insurmountable challenges) and their compassionate human caretakers. Courage, for example, is the lesson from Colbie, a blind Huskie mix who trades the horrible life of a puppy mill for the challenges of navigating life on a farm. You will be inspired by the grace with which Tux, a paralyzed tuxedo cat, manages to find moments of joy each and every day. You will be amazed by Ruby, an irrepressible Labrador-Doberman mix with a devastating muscle wasting disease who gives new meaning to the term “roll

with the punches.” You will be rooting for Idgie, editor Mary A. Shafer’s blind kitten, who survived not only a life in the streets of Philadelphia, but also beat the death sentence of feline leukemia. These stories will remain with you and leave paw prints on your heart long after you’ve read them. They will delight and inspire you. You’ll be humbled not only by the animals who have overcome obstacles that would leave many humans incapacitated and depressed, but also by the humans who have taken on the care of these special pets. You will laugh, and you will cry, and you will appreciate how caring for and loving a disabled pet—while challenging— can also be a very rewarding and life-changing experience. Naughty or Nice? Just released and illustrated in the signature woodblock style that made Stephen Huneck famous, this book paints a beautiful picture of life at the Dog Chapel. HIT THE TRAIL Local walks to enjoy

Dog-Friendly Areas Near Regional Trails By Neil K n o l l e , t r a i n e r, D o g O n F i t n e s s

undreds of miles of multi-use paved trails in northern Virginia appeal to thousands of users, including dog owners. Two of my favorite spots are the Four Mile Run Trail in Arlington that leads from the Barcroft Sport and Fitness Center to the Shirlington Dog Park, and the Washington and Old Dominion Trail (W&OD) segment going west from Vienna to the Northside Park. If you like meeting people and dogs, then Shirlington is for you. Consider the Vienna location if you prefer a more open setting, solitary walks, and fewer encounters.

Shirlington Dog Park The well-planned Shirlington Dog Park in Arlington is a very large canine and human social center perfect for a major off-leash romp. A hard-surface trail winds through the shady park for about a quarter mile, with poop bag dispensers, waste cans, and multiple water stations along the way. Look for nearby parking off Four Mile Run Drive. The jewel of this park is Four Mile Run where dogs can splash and swim. Paths to the stream go down a steep rocky bank that may be difficult for some dogs. People wade with their dogs, and you’ll see dogs of all sizes and breeds paddling for all they’re worth to retrieve thrown objects. To wash that muddy dog, head over to Muddy Mutt or Fur-Get Me Not self-service dog wash facilities conveniently located near the park. This dog park is a high-energy area and is not the place for small children. Remember, it’s important to accurately appraise your dog’s temperament and sociability before going to any dog park. Suggested Hike—A short hike to and from the

dog park will give your dog warm-up and cooldown time. I suggest the shady Four Mile Run Trail, a welcome urban retreat less used by bikers than the nearby W&OD trail. Park at the Barcroft Sport and Fitness Center, 4200 S. Four Mile Run Drive. Follow the paved trail between the athletic fields and cross the footbridge to reach the Four Mile Run Trail. Go left and follow the trail to Walter Reed Drive. Keep your dog on the grassy area to avoid other trail users. Cross Walter Reed Drive. Go left and cross the bridge over Four Mile Run. After crossing, go right and follow the pathway to the west gate of the dog park. Conserve enough energy for your return trip to Barcroft! TRAIL SPECIFICS:

Distance: 1.5 miles round trip Time: 35 minutes round trip to and from the Shirlington Dog Park Location: 4200 S. Four Mile Run, Arlington, VA Fido-Friendly Features: Shaded trails Use: Walkers, runners, bikers, on-leash dogs Best Time to Go: Weekends, Weekdays 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM Rated: 1 paw (few challenges, but your dog will get a great workout at the dog park)

W&OD Trail – Vienna, VA The heavily used 45-mile W&OD Trail starts in Shirlington and ends in Purcellville, VA. Much of it is bordered by a soft-surface horse trail, a safer option for leashed dogs. One of my favorite access points is in the heart of Vienna at 144 Maple Avenue. Parking is on Church Street, one block west of Maple Avenue near the red caboose. Suggested Hike—From the parking area, go west on the W&OD toward the restored railroad station where there is a drinking fountain and dog pan. Use a strap leash for outings on the W&OD to prevent your dog from crossing the trail unexpectedly. Leave that retractable leash at home. There is no horse trail on this segment, so use the grassy border when possible. Continue west for a half mile to the entrance

of Northside Park. You’ll pass the 12-mile marker en route. Follow the paved pathway into the park for an enjoyable half-mile loop over paths that meander through quiet mature woods. Cross the footbridge and notice the reminder to keep dogs leashed at all times. After crossing the bridge, go right on the paved trail. Go left at the T-intersection, following the rocky trail up a short steep hill. Bear right at the first trail split. Take the second narrow dirt path to the left and go down the hill. This path leads to a small streambed at the bottom of the hill. The path narrows just as the W&OD power line towers come into view. Stay to the right and watch your step since there are many loose rocks and roots. Continue up the hill to the footbridge. Cross the bridge to get back on the W&OD. Go left on the W&OD to return to the parking area. If you want, extend your hike in the woods by following additional small paths once you have your bearings. For more information on the W&OD, visit www. wodfriends.org Getting There—Take Route 123 into Vienna, VA. From the south, turn left on Lawyers Road, then right on Church Street to the W&OD trail. From the north, turn right on Park Street, then left on Church Street to the W&OD. TRAIL SPECIFICS:

Distance: 1.8 miles Time: 1 hour Location: Near 131 Church Street, Vienna, VA Fido-Friendly Features: Shaded trails, water fountain Use: Walkers, runners, bikers, on-leash dogs Best Time to Go: Weekend mornings, Weekdays 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM Rated: 2 paws (some challenges, but overall doable for reasonably fit people and dogs)

WAGS TO RICHES Adoption success stories

Modi:

Has the most beautiful green eyes you have ever seen

Adopted from: The Animal Welfare League of Arlington, August 2009

How did he get his name? We named Modi after one of our favorite artists, Amedeo Modigliani, called Modi for short. Modigliani was known for painting unfailingly unique eyes, what he called “the windows to the soul.” Our Modi has the most beautiful green eyes you’ll ever see—they often stop people in their tracks.

Yo u p i c k e d h i m b e c a u s e . . . His eyes were definitely the first thing that attracted us at the shelter. When we saw him there, he was so loving, happy, and playful. He shared his kennel with a small, very hyperactive puppy named Shadow. Modi had an amazing level of tolerance for his little buddy—allowing him to nip and jump on him. In the end, they’d be curled up together in the same little bed, always with Shadow on top.

Modi is one-and-a-half years old and loved by Tonya Brisk and Desmond White of Arlington, VA.

Favorite treat or snack: Modi’s favorite snacks are anything that comes from DOGMA, especially the peanut butter cookies! He also likes strawberries, carrots, and twigs. He will do almost anything if you have a stick in your hand. He likes to savor his treats. He’ll take it ever so gently, and run into another room throwing it up in the air and batting it around for a while before he finally settles down to enjoy his snack.

Favorite activity together: One of our favorite activities together is jogging—Modi is good for 3-5 miles on a cool day. We also like to explore local parks, trails, and wineries. Modi is always down for a backyard BBQ.

Favorite toy: Other dogs! Modi enjoys nothing more than a good play date with other dogs, large or small. He can be found flopped over on his back wiggling around bearing his tummy and trying to get another dog’s attention. He also loves tug-of-war and frisbee.

Yo u l o v e h i m b e c a u s e . . . Modi has improved our lives in ways we would have never imagined. He loves us unconditionally. He loves to snuggle when we don’t feel like being on the go. He has the goofiest personality—always making us laugh. His facial expressions are so dramatic you can almost tell what he is thinking. Modi is the best companion we have found since each other. We can’t imagine life without him. He makes our lives complete. ND
