Local Flavor Did you know that there are more than 7,800 farmers markets operating throughout the United States? The Metro DC area has many diverse and thriving markets. By using the USDA farmers market search engine, (http:// search.ams.usda.gov/farmersmarkets) I found eight of them in my neighborhood alone. Many markets are branching out to sell other items in addition to just fresh fruits and produce. At the Del Ray Farmer’s market in Alexandria vendors also sell honey, cheeses, cut flowers, eggs, nuts, pastries, and even dog treats! Every Saturday (year-round) from 8AM-noon on the corner of Mt. Vernon Avenue and East Oxford, you can satisfy your craving for something fresh! ABOVE: We found these delicious (dog-tested!) treats at the Del Ray market. Home-made by local vendor Barkley Square, they use natural ingredients to make all the treats, including their number one seller, bacon and cheddar bones as well as chicken bites, pizza fish, peanut butter bites, and pupcakes.

Spay/Neuter Promotion for Owners With Multiple Pets In partnership with the Shumaker Family Foundation, the FiXiT Foundation, an organization dedicated to ending pet euthanasia due to overpopulation, is offering a special promotion to pet owners through its initiative, GetYourFix.org. When sponsors provide funds to spay or neuter one pet, the FiXiT Foundation and Shumaker Family Foundation provide funding for another pet in the same household to be spayed or neutered. “Households that have multiple unfixed animals are at higher risk of an accidental litter,” says Kellie Heckman, executive director, FiXiT Foundation. “We are excited to team up with the Shumaker Family Foundation to help sponsors increase their reach through their donation of spay/neuter surgery to a pet owner in need.” Currently, GetYourFix.org has nearly 5,000 profiles of pets from owners requesting a sponsor to help spay or neuter their pet. Pet owners on the site have four pets on average. “We are very pleased to team up with the FiXiT Foundation to increase awareness about spay and neuter,” says Judy Wright, executive director, Shumaker Family Foundation. “GetYourFix.org is a unique initiative that is really making a difference in communities across America by helping pet owners in need, many of whom have been impacted by today’s economy.” GetYourFix.org was launched in early 2011, and, in the past year and a half, the organization has helped hundreds of pet owners spay and neuter their pets in need. In addition to linking pet owners with sponsors, the organization helps connect the pet owner with a local clinic to perform the operation.

Take the Stress Out of Car Trips By Sher a B eck
“My Basset Hound Mazie gets very stressed out in the car. She is generally OK once we get to our location, but the ride makes her anxious. Now, she puts on the brakes as soon as we get anywhere near the car, which is a huge problem not only for trips but also trips to the vet! Is there anything I can do to help this be a better experience for her?” QUESTION
You need to make the car a more positive experiANSWER ence for Mazie. When dogs have anxiety, taking baby steps to desensitize them to whatever makes them anxious is important. For your dog, the act of putting her in the car and then driving to a destination and getting out should be broken down into many steps. Keeping her occupied in the car with her favorite plush or chew toy will help to keep her focused on something she enjoys. 1 Spend a few hours with Mazie luring her in the car with a treat, giving her the treat once she’s inside the car and calm, and then luring her out. Laboratory Testing for Dogs and What You Need to Know By Christ y B ell, LV T
L
aboratory testing helps our pets live longer, healthier lives. A few basic tests, coupled with a physical exam and health history, allow veterinarians to gather a wealth of information concerning the overall health status of your pet. Why do vets do blood work and lab testing? Because dogs cannot describe their symptoms to let us know what might be wrong. Our pets can hide illness, which may be detrimental to their longterm health. Diagnosing an illness in our pets, as in humans, can be difficult and often requires laboratory tests, including specific blood work. Blood work can establish a baseline for health care (i.e., a comparison of your dog’s health when all is well versus when an illness or injury occurs). And last, but certainly not least, it is used to monitor dogs that are on a variety of drugs, such as NSAIDS and seizure, thyroid, or other drugs. Dental disease can alert your veterinarian to conduct testing for internal organ damage and health risks. Test results assist the veterinary team the proper anesthetic drugs for procedures. When do we do blood work? Baseline value testing, preanesthetic testing, wellness exams, sick pet visits, emergencies, and senior pet quality of life evaluations are a few examples of when a vet may do bloodwork. You should work with your veterinary team in determining what testing is needed for your pet. Discuss with them the importance of your role in testing

H E A L T H W I S E and understanding the veterinarian’s interpretation. Simply reading values on a piece of paper doesn’t tell you the entire story; you need your veterinarian to work with you for greater understanding to avoid misinterpretation or incorrect assumptions. The volume of blood drawn from your dog will depend on the tests that your veterinarian orders and the labs he or she submits. Many veterinary facilities have the ability to run basic testing inhouse for fast and accurate results in minutes, instead of using an outside lab which would mean it could be days before the vet gets the results. You may be asked to fast (withhold food) from your pet for 8-12 hours prior to testing for “ideal” blood conditions. Factors such as fat (lipemia) in the bloodstream can hinder results or hemolysis (lysed or damaged blood cells) can alter test results if the blood is drawn or handled improperly, which could lead to false results. Following is a brief explanation of “basic” wellness tests veterinarians use to diagnose the health of your pet.
Complete Blood Count. A small amount of blood is drawn from a vein to check for anemia, infection, inflammation, and the overall health status of various blood cells. A complete blood count (CBC) is a test that evaluates the number of cells in circulation. White blood cells (WBC) help fight infection or inflammation. Red blood cells (RBC) carry oxygen to the tissues. The hemotocrit or packed cell volume (PCV) tells us hydration status and the overall condition of the circulating RBCs.

low your veterinarian to determine that internal organs are functioning properly. n Liver function/health: AST, ALT, Alk Phos, total bilirubin, GGT, cholesterol, proteins. Individual values are just as important as the group level comparison for these tests. Decreased liver function, inflammation, infection, or neoplasia (cancer) of the liver and gall bladder may be detected by one or all of these tests. n Kidney function: BUN, creatinine, phosphorus, amylase, albumin. These tests are sensitive for detecting early kidney disease, kidney failure, stones, cancers, and are often combined with a urinalysis. n Pancreas: glucose, amylase, lipase, triglyceride. These tests demonstrate carbohydrate metabolism diabetes mellitus, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), abnormalities resulting from long-term medications, and cancer. n Muscle and bone: Calcium and phosphorus assist in determining bone metabolism health. CPK and AST may be abnormal due to muscle damage, trauma, or inflammation. n Electrolytes: sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphorous. Deficiencies or excesses of these electrolytes are harmful to physical and mental well-being. These test values monitor electrical, water balance, and the cellular health of the body.
| Fall 2012
These tests are useful in diagnosing increased (hyper) or decreased (hypo) functions of the thyroid gland. Too little thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism) is common in dogs whereas too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) is common in older cats. Because there is no single thyroid test that can diagnose all thyroid diseases in animals, several different thyroid tests are used to assure proper results (T4, T3, free T4, by dialysis, etc.).
Urinalysis. The health and function of the urinary system is especially important in older animals to help with the early detection of kidney disease or infection. Heartworm testing. A simple test may be run in your veterinarian’s office to check for deadly heartworms. This test is typically run annually for dogs, even if they are on preventatives. No preventative (much like vaccinations) provide 100 percent protection.
Lyme disease testing. Tick migration has exposed all of us and our pets to a variety of Rickettsial diseases. Ticks are common parasites that can be found anywhere—from deep woods to urban parks. Each year, thousands of dogs become infected with serious diseases—such as ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and others— transmitted by a number of different ticks. These diseases have negative impact on many internal organs, and symptoms often do not appear until damage has occurred. Fecal tests. Identify parasites that can cause diarrhea, weight loss, and blood loss. You and your veterinary team can develop a health plan for your pet. Always discuss the results, and get answers and explanations from your veterinary team. The Internet has options for information, but make sure you rely on reputable sites and sources. lection season is upon us, and our swing state status means that we Virginians are right in the thick of it. While political debates abound these days, one thing is for certain—our four-legged friends will always be on our side. Washington Court Hotel, which has catered to political power players on the Hill since 1981, is now catering to you and your BFF (Best Furry Friend) with a special “Power Pooch Package.” Book this deal and you and your “RePUPlican” or “DEMOdog” will be treated like royalty as you enjoy all that our capitol city has to offer. Lisa Schmitt, director of Sales and Marketing for the Washington Court, says that the
hotel has always been pet-friendly, though only unofficially at first. When Schmitt joined the team two years ago, she made it her personal mission to make the hotel a welcoming place for both two-legged and four-legged guests. “Our focus is on creating a great experience for our guests,” she says. “We want to do whatever we can to make our guests feel at home, including welcoming their pets with open arms,” she explains.
Everyone at the hotel, from the housekeeper to the bellhop, is crazy about pets. General Manager Joel Manion, who lives on site, had his golden retriever, Marley as his faithful companion until her passing. “As pet lovers, we know that a lot of people consider their dog a part of the family and would prefer to bring their pet with them when travelling,” says Schmitt. The Washington Court has made that possible by reserving a block of 10 rooms on the third floor for what they call the VIP (Very Important Pet) wing. Each of the large, comfortable rooms on the VIP wing are decked out with all the amenities you and your dog need to feel right at home, including a doggie placemat, a food and water bowl, and a stylish, comfy pillow bed your pup is sure to love. Upon arrival, your Power Pooch will be greeted with a gift of gourmet treats from Arlington-based Dogma Gourmet Dog Bakery and Boutique and a patriotic plush toy to take home. Once they’ve claimed their party affiliation as a RePUPlican or DEMOdog, they will also be styled with a party bandana to wear proudly around town. From there, you can head upstairs to hang out in your luxurious room or go out on the town to visit some of the dog-friendly restaurants, yappy hours, and bakeries recommended by hotel staff. The Washington Court Hotel is centrally located only three blocks from the U.S. Capitol, two blocks from Union Station, and an easy walk to the Smithsonian museums and monuments on the National Mall. It is also within walking distance to beautiful Stanton Park, where you are sure to find other four-legged friends out for a stroll. Schmitt says that the special package has been well-received by both out-of-town visitors and locals who are looking for a mini vacation inside the beltway. “It’s been a lot of fun for us and our guests, and we will certainly continue to offer it in the future,” she says. Here’s what you need to know: Washington Court Hotel 525 New Jersey Avenue, NW Washington DC 20001 202.628.2100 www.washingtoncourthotel.com Power Pooch packages can be booked online or by phone, and are priced the same as Washington Court’s best available rate. If you’re booking online, be sure to select the Power Pooch Package from the hotel’s list of specials and packages. Let hotel staff know the size and breed of your dog, and any special needs he or she may have. Included with the pet pampering are some great products provided by local dog experts at Arlington-based Dogma Gourment Dog Bakery and Boutique. Your pooch will receive the very patriotic and plush Egg Babies Bald Eagle (pictured here) made by Kyjen. It’s more than a toy; it’s actually a puzzle with three hidden squeaky “eggs” for your dog to sniff out inside. And don’t forget the 100 percent natural wheat and corn-free treats. Your dog can tour the neighborhood and snack in style, with one of these yummy flavors: bacon cheddar, apple dumpling, peanut butter and jelly, blueberry cobbler, and chicken veggie.

Unique Finds and Fresh-Baked Dog Treats By El i s sa M a t u lis M y er s

ogma Bakery is so much more than a bakery—but as a baker of fine dog biscuits and treats, it is addictive. “We have many customers that come in as a part of their daily dog walk, with the dogs pulling them down the sidewalk and in to the store,” says Sheila Raebel, owner of this pair of classic dog destinations—one in the Village at Shirlington and the original located on N. Harrison Street in Arlington. Beyond the charming bakery case, the store is full of wonderful dog gifts, gear, and toys. “In addition to attending most of the major pet industry shows like Super Zoo, I also spend a lot of time at gift shows— most recently the Philadelphia and Atlanta Gift Shows—trying to find unique treasures that you won’t see at most other stores.” The walls of the store are hung with wonderful dog portraits, painted by artist Glynn Kessler, and with fun T-shirts with pictures and slogans that will get your friends laughing at you—in a good way. And the shelves are full of treasures, both useful and wonderfully frivolous. All of the baking for both stores is done every morning at the Harrison Street shop—usually by a group of bakers—Laura Tinter, Liza Penalosa, Michelle Bailey, and Phoebe Rosen. “Our treats are really fresh, so we have customers coming in every other day or so for treats,” says Raebel. “We have a five-rack commercial oven and a gigantic mixer, and we make hundreds of cookies a day, all made and cut by hand—and at the end of every day, we have very little inventory left!”
Both stores are open long hours, seven days a week—unusual among boutique pet stores. “We are able to stay open because I have a terrific staff that really cares about the business and about our customers. Every one of them goes above and beyond the norm every day. Thanks to our great team we’ve weathered the recession and the expansion of the big-box stores into pet territory. We take it as a compliment that the large chains are recognizing and emulating what the neighbor-

As if to prove the point, a customer with a little Chihuahua came in to the Shirlington store for his daily duck stick—a reconstituted chewy treat that was just slightly smaller than the dog. “I figure I spend $365 a year on these duck sticks alone,” the customer tells me. “But if we don’t come, he stands at the door and protests until I bring him in,” she says. The Shirlington store features dog grooming that is a cut above the quick grooming done at many local facilities. “We are not a high volume salon. We specialize in the kind of breed-specific grooming that is done for show-dogs,” Raebel says. “We had one dog come in whose owners were beside themselves with worry. He was so shaggy they were ready to shave him,” she says. “Instead, our professionally trained groomer Cassandra worked with him slowly, and, by the end of the session, she had taken ‘half of a dog’ off of him!”

Sheila Raebel, owner of Dogma Bakery, lets a customer get in some sniffs of her latest confection. Dog of her own? “I had a family dog, Alfy, who lived to be 18 years old. But Bailey, our brand ambassador, is my first dog that I would call my own. Bailey was adopted from the Fairfax County Shelter from a whole litter of pups that were dumped in the woods in Orange County.” Bailey hit the jackpot when he was adopted by the owner of Dogma! Other pets? Raebel had a Jack Dempsey fish named Sam that was kept in a 110-gallon fish tank. “I rescued him from a fish store where he wasn’t eating because he had lost his teeth. Turned out, he loved frozen worms. He was so big that I had to bury him in a boot box when he died,” she says. “He was like a dog—he would come up to the front of the tank and swim back and forth to get my attention.” Advice for others thinking about getting into a pet-centric business? Be prepared to get very involved with the community: for example, participate in adoption events, special holiday celebrations built around dogs, and special dog days like the Shirlington Wags and Whiskers. Favorite new product? Raebel has two! Beyond a Bag—a backpack that easily expands into a pet carrier for a small or medium pet—and the Soggy Doggy Doormat and Chamie—an unbelievably soft and absorbent dog towel.

Funniest experience since buying Dogma? “Well I couldn’t say ‘funny,’” Raebel says. “But it’s surely ironic that I bought the business just before the recession, and then we had both a hurricane, and the biggest earthquake on the East Coast in my lifetime, Snowmaggedon, and the derecho. But we are still standing!”
hood stores like ours were already doing,” Raebel says. Dogma also caters to special needs pets. “We don’t offer medical advice, but if a customer comes in asking about special dietary issues, we’ll call one of the great veterinarians in the area for advice on what treats or dog food to offer. We take a holistic approach to our care for pets,” says Raebel. An increasing number of local businesses are placing wholesale orders for Dogma confections. “Lots of restaurants and hotels that host yappy hours come to us for dog treats—especially our home made ice-cream and frozen treats,” she says. Raebel herself doesn’t bake: “I tried to make pumpkin cookies, and they just kept rising and rising and rising. They were starting to look like real pumpkins, so my staff took over.” And, she’s allergic to dogs! “But I love them,” she says, and Dogma immerses her in dog culture without requiring her to be surrounded by dogs all day. “Dogma gives me the ability to offer a place for charities to hold fundraisers, for rescue groups to hold adoption events, and local law enforcement to train their K9s for detection work.” Her love of dogs shows in everything she has done. The shop is a symphony of special treats for dogs—cookies and bones—but also things to wear and things to play with, and things to look and laugh at. No wonder dogs from miles around drag their owners to her store. ND

Freedom No-pull Harness
If your dog pulls on the leash and you want a better, more gentler way to control him while out for a walk, this is an excellent choice. It has a loop that sits on the back between the shoulders. When the dog pulls, the harness tightens gently around the chest, relieving a lot of the pain and stress to the neck that equipment—like flat-buckle collars, choke chains, or pinch collars cause. It also has a structural ring on the front of the chest for an additional control point, which lets you guide your dog or redirect his or her attention, and makes management much easier. This is not a cure for good leash manners, but an excellent choice to manage walks when not actively training your dog to walk well on a leash. Price: $28.99

A Dog’s Journey
Dog Training & Behavior Modification
By W. Bruce Cameron, Reviewed by Ingrid King
A
Dog’s Journey is the long-awaited sequel to the wildly successful A Dog’s Purpose, soon to be a major motion picture, which chronicled the journey of one dog’s search for his purpose over the course of several lifetimes. Written from the dog’s point of view, A Dog’s Journey picks up where the previous book left off. Buddy is near the end of his life when he meets Ethan’s granddaughter, Clarity. After saving her from near drowning, he realizes that guarding her will be his purpose. The story follows Buddy through several incarnations. He stops at nothing to make sure he is reunited with Charity for each lifetime, and he protects, rescues, and supports the sometimes troubled young girl into adulthood. He is by her side through numerous challenges, and his unconditional love brings comfort and joy even during some of her darkest days. The author’s ability to look at the world through a dog’s eye and a dog’s heart will bring smiles and tears to the reader in equal measure. Readers will enjoy this book even without having read A Dog’s Purpose, but they will probably get more out of it by reading the two books in sequence. Like the original, the sequel is more than just another dog story. It’s a story of timeless love between dogs and humans, and it proves that every living being has a purpose. As seems to be the case with most sequels, it doesn’t pack quite the same punch as the first book, but this heartwarming and charming story is still a thoroughly enjoyable read. Ingrid King is the award winning author of Buckley’s Story – Lessons from a Feline Master Teacher. She is a former veterinary hospital manager turned writer. Her blog, The Conscious Cat, is a comprehensive resource for conscious living, health, and happiness for cats and their humans, which has won multiple awards. Ingrid is the publisher of the online magazine News for You and Your Pet, which goes out to subscribers around the world. For more information about Ingrid, please visit www.ingridking.com.

WAGS TO RICHES Adoption success stories
Ollie
2-year-old Oliver is loved by the Heun family in Woodbridge, VA.
Adopted from: Lucky Dog Animal Rescue on January 29, 2011. How did he get his name? His shelter name was actually Lyle, and, when my husband and I decided to adopt him, we were even toying with the idea of keeping the name. We adopted our little guy off transport, meaning we got approved to adopt before he arrived and committed to taking him home sight unseen. When he got here, he was clearly nervous and didn’t quite know what to make of the new world around him. But when we got him home, he had this hopeful curiosity about him and was so willing to welcome love into his life. Something about him made us think of Oliver Twist, and so the name Oliver stuck.
irl.”” g y “M
You picked him because... My husband grew up with a Jack Russell Terrier, and, when we decided we were ready to get a dog, that was the dog he wanted. Since I grew up with a mutt from a shelter, I only cared that we get our dog by adoption. So after some searching, we stumbled upon Ollie, which is how we found Lucky Dog. Favorite activity together: One of the things I love about Ollie is he’s pretty much up for anything. He’s our little clown, and we love his happy-go-lucky attitude about everything. Though I do think our favorite activity might be cuddling up on the couch for a nap together! Favorite toy: Two weeks after we adopted Ollie, we got him a fuzzy stuffing free toy that sort of looks like a Muppet. We named him Blue because that’s what his color is. He plays with it often, but it’s the only toy to date that he hasn’t tried to tear apart yet. So, by virtue of its longevity, we would probably call Blue his favorite.

You love him because he... loves us and brings us such joy each moment of each day. There aren’t really enough words to explain how our lives have been made better since Ollie has come into our life. He’s playful and up for anything, but also an incredible cuddle bug. He’s also been an amazing foster brother to Lucky Dogs just like him, always excited for his new live-in playmate and especially helpful at showing shy fosters that the world after shelter life isn’t so scary. It wasn’t so long ago that he came into our lives, but we honestly can’t remember or imagine what life was like without him.
