The Dangers of Xylitol for Pets By Rachel Ray
X
ylitol is a low-calorie sweetener that is finding it’s way into an increasing amount of products. The sweetener is not limited to food and is included in many dental products, as well as medications and vitamins. Although this sweetener is “natural,” it is extremely toxic to dogs and cats. Common products that include xylitol are candies/gum, chocolate, desserts, honey, jam/ syrups, drink powders, medication/vitamins, and many dental products. A big surprise for many pet owners is that xylitol is now popping up in peanut butters. For a growing list of products that contain xylitol visit www.preventivevet. com/xylitol-products-toxic-for-dogs. Not only do you want to avoid purposely feeding your pet xylitol, you will want to keep these items out of reach of your pet. Store these items in a safe and secure place. Even the smallest amount of xylitol can wreak havoc on a pet’s system causing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), liver failure, seizures, or death. There is no antidote for xylitol toxicity, but your veterinarian can provide supportive care to help your pet recover if treated in a timely manner. Symptoms of xylitol ingestion occur quickly,
usually within 15-30 minutes. Signs that your pet’s blood sugar is lowering rapidly include any of the following: • Vomiting • Weakness • Shaking or tremors • Lethargy • Difficulty walking or standing • Seizures If you suspect your pet ingested a product containing xylitol, it is important to contact your veterinarian immediately. Do not wait for your pet to show symptoms. Rachel Ray is the Director of Marketing for eight Caring Hands Animal Hospital locations in Northern Virginia & Maryland. She lives in Winchester, VA with her husband and their three dogs. Her hobbies include photography, graphic design, interior decorating, and Florida State football games. She is a decent cook, but not enough to be famous.

Why Call a Mobile Vet? By Eric M. Cryan D.V.M.
V
eterinarians tend to have some unique experiences at work when compared to the average desk job and mobile veterinarians are no exception. Along with my clients, I have been able to experience the joys of watching rescued dogs thrive at home after their tragic beginnings. I have also heard the screams for help from a new assistant when trapped in a corner by a sweet little grey kitty who turned into “Church” from Pet Cemetery after I left the room. When I started my practice in 2011, I had many preconceived notions as to why one would call a mobile veterinarian, but I have learned that the reasons can be as diverse as the clients and pets I am fortunate enough to visit. Since I grew up in Northern Virginia, I always enjoy visiting with old friends and making new ones. To this day I can still be surprised
by the changes in various neighborhoods and I love to see new additions to my clients’ families. While I see fewer appointments than I used to when I was working at a traditional practice, my clients are quite appreciative of this increased time and attention I am able to spend with them. This increased time for an appointment allows for more effective communication about their pets day-to-day living environment and quality of life. Another key advantage to a house call appointment is the extra time to answer any questions or concerns a client may have. One more advantage is that observing pets in their home environment can often reveal a wealth of information even before the physical exam begins. While the majority of time the exam is conducted inside the home where the animal is least stressed, it is important to offer additional

Similar to visiting a human doctor, the vast majority of examinations and procedures are performed on an outpatient basis in veterinary medicine. My goal with my practice is to offer convenience for the client without sacrificing quality. We offer imaging (x-rays and ultrasound) to help diagnose potential problems as well as anesthetic procedures including surgery Send completed approval to: and dentistry to treat and prevent problems. One of the most rewarding aspects of starting my practice is having clients tell me that their animals would not receive veterinary care if it were not for our efforts. We see dogs larger than their owners who when they break a bone or blow a knee ligament would not be able to have x-rays taken as they are unable to transport them. Many senior dogs with arthritis and other orthopedic conditions shun car rides as they age and benefit from a house call veterinarian. Likewise if an owner is unable to drive due to various reasons including visual impairment, neurological conditions, advanced age, or other medical issues, we serve as a valuable lifeline for their companion’s health care. We see dogs that have seizures when taken to a normal brick and mortar hospital, but allow our trained staff to perform a complete examination with their tails wagging. Some dogs are not good around other dogs, but are fine during a house call visit. Some clients trust me with the ultimate responsibility: to perform humane euthanasia on their loved one when their quality of life has diminished due to age, organ failure, cancer, or other reasons. By far though the most common class of animals that would not receive medical
care without our efforts are cats. Not a week will pass without a client commenting that they have not been able to take their cat to the vet for years as they are unable to get their cat in its carrier. Felines can be very particular creatures and the combination of rounding them up, stuffing them into a cat carrier, and then driving them to a hospital to wait in a room with a bunch of dogs barking can take even the most patient feline past their limit. Our mobile hospital allows a client to place food in a confined space, shut the door, and let us handle the rest. Often times we are able to obtain a more detailed physical exam when a cat has not been through this extremely stressful process and are way past their limit before a veterinarian can even put their hands on him or her. As a practicing mobile veterinarian, I get the benefit of seeing animals in their true environment and gain valuable information on their lifestyle. While I often joke that I would wait for the phone to ring like in “Ghostbusters” and scream “we got one” when I started my practice, now five years later I am apologizing for being booked and needing to see routine wellness vis-

Is My Dog in Pain? By Dr. Julie Wentzel, DVM, CVA, CVPP, CCRT.

ogs are sentient creatures like us—they feel pain and can suffer with both acute and chronic pain. As we age, many of us will have at least minor aches and pains on occasion. What do we do? Take our choice of over-the-counter pain medications. But what happens when that headache or back pain lasts for hours or days? How does it affect you? Your sleep or performance with athletics or your job? What happens with your interactions with your friends, family, or coworkers? Are you bright and cheerful, or reserved, grouchy, and ready to go
back to bed? Unfortunately, most of our four-legged friends don’t give us clear signs when they are uncomfortable or in pain. Occasionally, they will cry out or limp, but most of the indicators are subtler. We can easily pass these changes off as “old age,” cognitive dysfunction, or behavioral issues, such as aggression. There are numerous resources to help you and your veterinarian identify if your pet may be in pain, such as the International Veterinary Asso-

Pawsitive Healing Energy with Reiki By Eneida Ramirez
R
eiki is not a cult, religion or magic. It is a powerful universal healing energy for the mind, body and spirit that can benefit all living things. Rei, comes from Japanese characters meaning “universal”, and Ki meaning “spirit or energy”. It goes back to over 100 years ago, where a Buddhist man created this spiritual practice to heal himself and others. Anyone with the right mind set and inner spirituality has the capacity to use Reiki in humans, animals and even plants. Reiki tries to provide a holistic healing possibility through hand channeling energy that activates the body’s natural ability to heal itself. This results in improved health and wellness, a better-balanced and harmonious patient. Canines are perfect candidates and can be
helped tremendously with Reiki. You can in fact help that furry friend that has changed your life by showing you the purest form of compassion, forgiveness, selflessness and love. Through Reiki, you can give back. Reiki for dogs has been a great success because of a dog’s positive acceptance of this energy. It is well known what a keen sense of intuition our dogs have. They sense our intentions, good or bad, and so they in turn welcome and receive this healing energy that they so much need. Our intention and approach when offering Reiki is of extreme importance. If our approach is not well intentioned or is forceful, it will be rejected, even if your dog was open to receiving this healing energy. This energy cannot be given by force, it is a passive offering

What better way to do it, than healing them both physically and internally. She deeply and truly believe in these holistic practices that in her experience, have a remarkable and profound difference in your dog’s life. where dogs become our teachers through a deep connection, and show us what they need and what’s best. Dogs need to come to you, and as you touch different energy centers with your hands, Reiki will go where it is needed. For Reiki to work, a dog’s openness to this energy is key and ultimately responsible for their healing process. Balancing your dog with Reiki has many benefits: reduces stress, provides healing energy for physical pain, illnesses and injuries, maintains health, calms, brings spiritual healing and also eases the transition of a companion passing away. Reiki is not a miracle practice that will cure all and everything, but it is an aide to modern medicine to heal and find each being’s highest good. This natural, non-invasive, touch therapy can promote healing in all animals,

The Benefits of Doggie Daycare By Bilal Malik
J
azzie was driving her owners crazy. She was an energetic Labrador Retriever with plenty of love to give, but she turned into a terror whenever her pet parents were away. She’d rip up carpet, chew on shoes, and tear into their leather couch with abandon. When I met Jazzie’s parents they were on the verge of giving her up, just to get their sanity back. I explained that Jazzie was not a bad dog. She was a bored, lonely, anxious dog whose needs were not getting met in her parent’s one bedroom Alexandria condo. Both of her parents worked long hours and had assumed a dog would be fine with food, water, a few toys and a twice daily walk. This is a common assumption, if an utterly incorrect one. I suggested trying her out on doggie daycare five days a week, and they saw an immediate change in Jazzie’s behavior. The carpet was safe…even if Jazzie’s parents stepped out to go and enjoy their weekend. Jazzie was able to remain in her forever home. Doggie daycare isn’t just some hipster idea
designed for anxious millennials who spoil their dogs rotten. It’s a way of meeting your dog’s very real instinctive need to run, play, and frolic. Dogs are highly social pack animals who need the company of both humans and other dogs. They’re also very physical animals who need the opportunity to use their bodies. They also sometimes need to go to the bathroom more than twice a day, just like you or I do. Don’t feel guilty if, like Jazzie’s parents, you’ve assumed otherwise in the past. There is plenty of bad information out there when it comes to dogs and their needs. You wouldn’t be the first person to assume animals are fine on their own, and you won’t be the last. Doggie daycare offers other benefits besides the behavioral ones. For example, the modern dog also struggles with obesity because he rarely has enough space to run around in at home. By taking your dog to daycare you ensure he gets the exercise he needs. It’s also a stress relief for pet parents. Imagine being told you had to work mandatory
www.petloverscompanion.com • 703.780.4400
overtime or stay late on some work project. It can be quite guilt-inducing and very stressful to wonder if your dog has had an accident because your boss wants you crunching on some last minute deadline until 10:00 at night. Finally, there’s the benefit people rarely consider: someone is there, watching your dog for signs of distress. If your dog chokes on something at home while you’re at work, for example, there’s simply nobody there to help him. When you choose a good dog daycare you get dedicated attendants who can help your dog stay safe. Here at Reserved Barking we feel that’s so important that we actually got our entire staff pet CPR certified. Of course, there’s an important lesson to be learned here, and it’s not just about doggie

daycare. It’s important to remember there are no “bad dogs.” If your dog is causing problems, and training isn’t helping, look for his unmet need. Often, you’ll find the solution you’re looking for. Bilal Malik is a lifelong canine enthusiast, former code-of-ethics breeder, rescuer, and behaviorist who was inspired to start his own dog daycare, boarding, and training facility where he could fundamentally incorporate his deep understanding of individual and pack-based canine behavior acquired over a lifetime of working with dogs. He started Reserved Barking with a 2600 square foot facility in 2010 that has since grown into two 15,000 square foot facilities in Alexandria, VA and Springfield, VA. Dog Parks Continue to Grow
hese parks provide a wonderful opportunity for dogs to exercise and socialize with other canines. Some dog parks are private and for members only with fees and strict enforcement of park rules. Private parks are rare. Parks are public. They are the result of grassroots movements and rely largely on users to adhere to rules, clean up after the dogs, and keep the peace by removing aggressive animals. Without the screening required by private parks, there is no way of knowing if all public park participants are properly socialized and are current on vaccinations. Most parks operate smoothly. Some parks provide space for dogs to run off leash while others set the stage for positive interaction among pets and people. Note: Some parks may not be completely fenced. Usage may be limited to residents of the particular area.

Adopt a Rescued Dog
There are several benefits to adopting a rescued dog. Many rescued dogs are mature adults who are housebroken. Adult dogs are past the stage of chewing on your shoes and furniture. They are loyal to the hand that feeds them, shelters them, and loves them. Give a loving pet a second chance – adopt. Listed on the following pages are telephone contacts for individual dog breed rescues. If the breed you are looking for is not listed, it may be because the contact for that breed has declined to be in the book or we are not aware of them. Keep in mind when calling these contacts that in many cases you are calling someone’s home. Most of these people are volunteers who donate their time for the love of the breed. Be respectful of the hours you call. Also, be aware that it may take time to get a response to your call.
