From the Publisher Hello Pet Lovers! What a fun year it has been! Maggie, my faithful and adorable rescue pup and I have been enjoying some early AM walks and she is getting ready to turn 7. I can’t believe how quickly the time flies! Seems like she was just a little pup yesterday and now she’s middle-aged! I have a feeling you experience that same thought all the time about your pets and even yourself. I know I feel like every year the time goes by even faster than the year prior—and it amazes me each time as I continually think that it can’t zoom by any more quickly, but it always somehow manages to! So I have been making a resolve to not let time slip away without enjoying it! I want to break out of the daily routine and create some memories. After all, didn’t someone say that “It’s the journey not the destination?” Well I believe it and I always feel more revived and creative when I take in new experiences. Therefore, Maggie and I have been a’thinking and a’planning about what kind of fun we can have this coming year and trying to figure out how to have you join in. So, I am excited to share some of the ideas we have for you to join in the fun with us! We are continuing to develop a great community that enjoys getting together and meeting up. We go on hikes, drink wine at pet-friendly wineries, we have seminar talks from pet experts of all sorts (including guest trainers, Pet CPR, and experienced cat specialists), host rescue adoptions and attend events—this year we might even try a pet treat making class. We have a fun calendar in the works and are getting ready to gear up for the warmer weather! And we want you to join us. Join our community and get ready for some fun!

Sign up to get updates via our newsletter at PetLoversCompanion.com and like us on Facebook (facebook.com/PetLoversCompanion) so you can be sure to learn about all the fun we have planned. And if you are specifically a dog lover, please join us at NOVADogMagazine.com too, sign up for the newsletter and like us on Facebook (facebook.com/ NOVADog)! I can’t wait to see you out and about. It’s going to be another fun year—and hopefully it won’t be over too quickly!

The Dog Lover’s Guide to Travel By Kelly E. Carter Pet travel expert Kelly E. Carter and her beloved longhaired
Chihuahua Lucy share their travel secrets in this engaging
and lively guide to the best pet-cation destinations in the
U.S. and Canada. Discover hundreds of places to please your
pooch, from restaurants with canine cuisine to shops for furry
fashionistas. Available wherever books are sold.

Ice Dogs By Terry Lynn Johnson Fourteen-year-old champion musher Victoria Secord is an expert in surviving the unforgiving Alaskan bush. But when an injured “city boy” and a freak snowstorm catch Victoria and her beloved dog team by surprise, a routine trip becomes a life-ordeath trek through the frozen wilderness. Young readers will be spellbound by this high-stakes adventure novel of endurance and hope. Available wherever fine books are sold. Visit www.terrylynnjohnson.com for a free discussion guide!

THE PETS SPEAK By Terri Diener

In this collection, 22 poets reflect on the cat. Kate Bell introduces the book observing “our cats are poetry in motion . . . they offer us joy, humor, and peace.” The illustrations were provided by Fancy Cats Rescue Team, which finds homes for cats in the Washington, D.C. area. $9.95. Available from violetpress.com and Amazon.com.

In this book, animal communicator Terri Diener relates the stories of 16 animals and the messages they have for their human companions. Each story, while unique to that animal, could be that of any dog, any cat, any horse, any bird. Their messages, though, reveal them to be thinking, feeling, consciously aware beings, who want us to stop underestimating them and see them for who they really are.

How to Choose Your Dog Walker By Becky O’Neil

H

iring a professional dog walker can be a huge benefit, creating peace of mind that your pets are in qualified hands when you cannot be with them. But without the right information, it can be difficult to decide among the many options offered in the pet care community. Companies range in size, credentials, services offered and much more. It takes more than a passion for animals to properly care for dogs and cats in a range of circumstances, and confidence in your company and walker is essential. To ensure that your pet’s new friend is the right fit, use the questions below as a guideline for selecting your dog walker or pet sitter. 1. Is the company licensed, bonded and insured? Any company with a ‘professional’ title should hold current liability and workers compensation insurance and be bonded and licensed in the state in which they operate. Being licensed, bonded and insured means that you can rest easy knowing the company has the ability to correct for unforeseen circumstances. 2. What kind of training do employees receive and what equipment do you use? The company should have a training program in place, and be able to detail it for you. Training should be extensive, with policies and procedures in place to keep both your pet and the walker safe. Typically, both classroom and field work is the mark of a thorough training regime. It’s also important to see what type of equipment is used. Retractable leashes have been shown to carry significant risk, so see what the policy is on their use, and what safety policies are in place. giving your pet the highest level of care through accurate diagnosis and ideal treatment. What is my veterinarian’s role? As your primary care provider, your veterinarian works closely with the cardiologist to ensure your pet receives the best treatment tailored to the needs of your family. In human medicine, having a specialist and a primary care provider work together significantly improves outcomes and quality of life in patients. This is also true in veterinary medicine. When should I see a cardiologist? Any pet with signs of heart disease should be fully evaluated before having anesthesia for procedures such as dental cleanings, spay, neuter or growth removal. Seeing a cardiologist at the earliest sign of heart disease ensures that your pet will have a longer, healthier life through early and accurate diagnosis.

What kind of heart disease do pets get? Dogs and cats rarely have “heart attacks.” Instead, they get diseases of the valves or heart muscle, which can be present from a young age or develop over time. Pets also can be born with defects of the heart, some of which can be readily repaired with surgery or catheterization. How is heart disease treated? The vast majority of heart disease in pets is managed with inexpensive medications, while some heart defects are correctable with surgical or catheterization procedures. Proper treatment regimens and follow-up care can significantly improve the length and quality of life in most patients. With early intervention and proper care, many pets with heart disease live long, healthy lives as much-loved members of your family.

Regular Grooming—Good For You and Your Pet! by Charles Eastin, DVM, PhD, MPH, DACVPM

O

nly a fraction of pet owners have their pets groomed regularly by a professional pet groomer. But those owners are possibly enjoying their pets more and improving some aspects of their pets’ health. A professional groomer may detect (and possibly prevent) certain disease processes. As a veterinarian, I recognize that some of the disease conditions that I see every day could be prevented by the regular care of a professional groomer. Here are just a few examples: Get clean. Get close. Get healthy! Of course you love your pet, but are you ever reluctant to share hugs and kisses with your pet? When your pet is clean with a pleasant aroma and a soft, smooth hair coat, then you will feel better about close contact with your pet and this will strengthen the emotional bond between you. Also, research has shown that petting lowers heart rate and blood pressure, which can improve the health of both you and your pet. Remove Hazardous Tangles. Monthly cleansing and brushing of a dog or cat’s

hair coat removes debris and tangles before they progress to severe hair coat matting. Melanie Florio, a groomer at Sterling Park Animal Hospital, has seen some mats that were so extensive that they resulted in infected skin lesions that required a complete shave down and treatment with veterinaryprescribed antibiotics. Regular grooming would have easily prevented many of these cases. Removing Dirt Helps Allergies. In the spring time, do you ever walk out of the house to find your car covered with a thick coat of pollen? That same pollen gets into your pets hair coat and can contribute to allergy outbreaks in your pet and other family members. Regular grooming removes allergens that can cause allergies in pets and pet owners. Jackie Winters, who grooms dogs at Dulles Executive Pet Center, offers this tip: Between grooming appointments, keep a box of baby wipes by the front door and cleanse your pet’s hair coat and pads when he or she comes inside. Other medical problems that can be

The Real Scoop on Dog Poop By: Doody Calls Pet Waste Removal

ime is a precious commodity, and of all of the things on your to-do list, picking up after the pooch is probably down there towards the bottom. But as unpleasant and time-consuming as this chore may be, keeping pet waste off the ground is an important responsibility held by all pet owners. What is a Raw Diet? by Liora Robinson, Whole Pet Central ome of you have never heard of a raw diet; some wonder what it’s all about; and some of you wouldn’t feed your pets any other way. So, what is a raw diet?

S

and balanced raw diets. The choices available range from complete and balanced (no fuss, no muss) to basic raw ingredients that supplements or veggies can be added to as needed.

Raw diets are pet foods that have not been cooked and are intended to be fed that way. This pet food option is based on the philosophy that our domesticated animals thrive best when fed a “biologically appropriate diet” – one that mimics what nature intended. These diets consist of meats, organs, bones and essential vitamins and minerals. Some include fruits and vegetables as well.

A diet that does not consist of processed ingredients, fillers, sugars nor any other inferior ingredient is what nature intended for our pets. Once you denature a food, you can no longer expect all of the benefits you would receive if eaten fresh. We all have the inherent knowledge that eating fresh, natural food is what’s best for our health. Let’s use that knowledge for our beloved pets and enjoy many years of great health.

Some people think a raw diet is a lot of work. Those who choose to prepare a raw diet themselves would agree. It can be challenging to balance how much meat, bones, veggies and supplements to use. Fortunately, today’s pet food industry is full of high quality, complete

Keep Fido Fit, Not Fat Written by Pet Experts at Olde Towne Pet Resort

A

n estimated 45% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, putting them at risk for serious health problems, including diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, high blood pressure, and a shorter life expectancy. How to Spot a Portly Pooch Unfortunately, many people don’t know that they have an overweight dog. Veterinarians report that nearly 50% of dogs are overweight, but only 17% of pet owners agree. An easy test is to stand behind a dog and look for a curved waist, just behind the rib cage. A pet with a straight line from head to tail, or even a bowed line along the back may mean that they are carrying more weight than they should. You can also gently run your fingers along the pet’s rib cage. The ribs should be felt easily and the skin should glide over the ribs smoothly; you should not feel a lot of skin moving under the fingers. How To Start The good news is that pets with an ideal weight live nearly two years longer than over-

weight pets, so it pays to get Fido in shape. First things first, schedule an examination with your dog’s veterinarian for a weigh-in and to start working on a safe weight-reduction and exercise plan. Knowing the correct serving size of food for your overweight dog is imperative for success. Companies often place information on labels or include charts on their Web sites. But because many variables, such as size, are factored into the equation, get advice from your veterinarian on how often and how much to feed your dog. Get Moving Dogs’ need for exercise varies depending on their age, size, breed and individual traits, but most dogs benefit enormously from 30 minutes of daily exercise. At first, focus on simple activities such as playing fetch, tug, running, swimming and at least one half-hour walk a day.

Spring Allergies By Bruce L. Hansen, DVM, DACVD Dermatology & Allergy, The LifeCentre Spring!!! The blooming flowers, bright green trees and the smell of a freshly cut lawn bring everyone delight—unless they suffer from allergies. Allergy sufferers know the torture that accompanies each spring with runny, itchy eyes, sniffles and sneezing. Our pets also suffer from allergies, except that pets mainly itch, and they bite, scratch and lick for relief. The constant biting, scratching and licking are a constant discomfort to them and set them up for secondary infections. However, there are things that we can do for our pets to make them more comfortable during this allergy season. First and foremost, we need to make sure they are flea-free because flea allergy is the number one allergy in dogs and cats. Secondly, cool water baths with a hypo-allergenic shampoo can bring

relief as long as the soap is completely rinsed off. If itching remains a problem, you should consult your veterinarian. For short term relief and only short term relief, your veterinarian can prescribe corticosteroids. For long term control, veterinarians can prescribe antihistamines such as Benadryl or Zyrtec, or they can prescribe omega-3 fatty acids to decrease itching. For more severe scratching, veterinarians can refer your pet for allergy testing, or use cyclosporine (Atopica) or a new drug, oclacitinib (Apoquel). There is a lot of help available to control your pet’s allergies; taking advantage of those resources can make this the best spring ever for your pet.

Adopt a Rescued Dog

There are several benefits to adopting a rescued dog. Many rescued dogs are mature adults who are housebroken. Adult dogs are past the stage of chewing on your shoes and furniture. They are loyal to the hand that feeds them, shelters them, and loves them. Give a loving pet a second chance – adopt. Listed on the following pages are telephone contacts for individual dog breed rescues. If the breed you are looking for is not listed, it may be because the contact for that breed has declined to be in the book or we are not aware of them. Keep in mind when calling these contacts that in many cases you are calling someone’s home. Most of these people are volunteers who donate their time for the love of the breed. Be respectful of the hours you call. Also, be aware that it may take time to get a response to your call.

Don’t Let it Wait By Danielle Lafave, DVM Deepwood Veterinary Clinic

H

as your pet not been his usual self lately? Perhaps your cat isn’t eating as well as she used to, or your dog is slower to get up. Pet owners sometimes dismiss such changes as “age-related” or unimportant. On behalf of your pet, I respectfully disagree. Any persistent or marked changes in your pet’s appetite, water intake, or bathroom habits warrant a trip to the vet. Persistent tummy upset or a chronic cough? Bring them in for an exam. Continued weight loss or gain as well as changes in mobility, or disinterest in toys, people or other animals are all reasons for a checkup.

Age is not a disease. Certain infirmities and illnesses become more common with advancing age, including painful arthritis, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and unfortunately, cancer. However, if diagnosed early, the majority of such conditions are treatable. With diet change, medication, and acupuncture your pets’ quality of life can be improved and their lifespan can often be lengthened. Even if the problem cannot be cured, it can often be managed.
