Yes, Peanut Butter CAN be Dangerous for your Dog! By Pennye Jones-Napier, The Big Bad Woof Retail & Delivery
H
ow many times have you had Pet Professionals, your local pet supply store, your neighbors and your friends tell you about using Peanut Butter in your pup’s favorite toy, to re-activate a bone, or to give medicine in a tasty treat? In all fairness, it has been relatively safe all these years, but now there is a hidden danger in SOME Peanut Butter brands that could be lethal for your favorite companion. That danger is a sugar substitute called Xylitol, and while it is safe for people, even a small amount of this substance can be cause dramatic illness and even death in canines. Ingestion of as little as 0.1 gram (g) of xylitol per kilogram (kg) of body weight (0.1 g/kg) can cause a rapid and danger ous drop in a dog’s blood sugar (a condition called “hypoglycemia”). Hypoglycemia can show as staggering, appearing disoriented, collapse, weakness, and seizures. Just slightly more than that, approx. 0.5 g/kg xylitol ingestion, can lead to debilitating, and sadly often deadly, destruction of a dog’s liver cells. Are there alternates to Peanut Butter that are safe? Absolutely! One of the best alternatives if you feel you need to make a switch is Almond Butter. While both Peanut Butter and Almond Butter have almost equal amounts of fiber, there are
some nice benefits to feeding your dog Almond Butter including: • Contains a high amount of Vitamin E, which is great for their skin & Coat • Has a higher amount of Magnesium, which nourishes the nervous system • It contains 100% more Iron, which helps oxygenate the blood • Almond Butter is a good source of Omega 3’s • No matter whether you decide to switch to Almond Butter or Peanut Butter, choose only plain, natural butters without any additives from your local grocer. Be sure to read those labels, and as an added tip, with Almond Butter keep it in the refrigerator to thicken it. If you want Peanut Butter that is all peanuts, we suggest you shop at your local natural food store. You can also check out DogsButter as a safe alternative to commercial peanut butter which may have added sweeteners. It is available in 3 varieties of functional treats, including Original, Immunity & Digestion, and Skin & Coat.

Impact of collaborative care on canine congestive heart failure patient survival Bonnie K. Lefbom, DVM, DACVIM; Neal K. Peckens, DVM, DACVIM CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets
O
ver the past few decades, veterinary medicine has responded to the shift of the pet being treated more and more as a member of the family. Specialty veterinary medicine, as well as 24/7 emergency care for companion animals, has become widely available in many areas as people continue to request a level of medical care for their pets that they would for themselves.
Dogs and cats typically hide early signs of heart disease until the disease has progressed significantly and is harder to treat. Thus, early, accurate diagnosis as well as the most appropriate treatment plan is key to successful intervention and treatment of disease in pets. We have long known that collaboration between primary care veterinarians and board certified cardiologists for patients with
12
www.petloverscompanion.com • 703.780.4400
heart disease results in a better outcome for patients and improved quality of life. CVCA has published a study to determine the effect of the partnership between primary care veterinarians (pcDVM) and in person boardcertified veterinary cardiologists (BCVC) on survival time of dogs after the onset of congestive heart failure (CHF) and associated revenue for the attending pcDVMs. In this study, the medical records of canine patients suffering from congestive heart failure due to mitral valve disease were reviewed. The survival times of the patients who had been managed jointly by a primary care veterinarian and in person veterinary cardiologist were compared to the patients
whose owners had elected not to see a cardiologist. The patients who were cared for by both the primary care veterinarian and cardiologist lived 74% longer than those who did not see a specialist. As in human medicine, a board certified veterinary specialist is someone who has devoted years of additional training and testing to become experts in a particular body system or field. This allows for more accurate diagnosis and proper intervention which is especially critical with heart disease, which can go undetected in pets until advanced stages. Ongoing management of cardiac disease includes routine communication between the client, primary care veterinarian, and cardiologist to ensure that the patient is always receiving the right combination of medications over time. This ongoing collaboration and partnership ensure the patient is receiving the best possible treatment plan to provide a long, happy life which is exactly what we all wants for our pets. To learn more about CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets visit our website at www.cvcavets.com or our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ CVCAVETS.

Keeping your pets safe…. Microchipping what is it and why? By Jill Barsky, Pet Friendly Realtor
A
microchip implant is an identifying integrated circuit placed under the skin of an animal. The chip, about the size of a large grain of rice, uses passive RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, and is also known as a PIT tag (for Passive Integrated Transponder). - Wikipedia The following is provided by HomeAgain®. https://public.homeagain.com/ Registered microchips give lost pets the best chance of returning home. The statistics indicate that missing pets rarely make it home. Why Microchip Your Pet? • The American Humane Association estimates over 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the U.S. every year. • One in three pets will become lost at some point during their life.
A study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, including 53 animal shelters across the U.S., confirmed the high rate of return of microchipped dogs and cats to their families, and the importance of microchip registration. From the study: • Only about 22 percent of lost dogs that entered the animal shelters were reunited with their families. However, the return-toowner rate for microchipped dogs was over 52 percent (a 238 percent increase). • Less than 2 percent of lost cats that entered the animal shelters were reunited with their families. The return-to-owner rate for microchipped cats was dramatically higher at over 38 percent (more than 2000 percent better). • Only 58 percent of the microchipped animals’ microchips had been registered in a database with their pet parent’s contact information.

to keep charged, wear out, or replace. The microchip will last your pet’s lifetime. Q: Why does my pet need a microchip when he already wears a collar with tags? A: All pets should wear collar tags imprinted with their name and the phone number of their pet parent, but only a microchip provides permanent ID that cannot fall off, be removed, or become impossible to read. Q: How much does it cost to microchip my pet? A: The average cost to have a microchip implanted by a veterinarian is around $45, which is a one–time fee and often includes registration in a pet recovery database. If your pet was adopted from a shelter or purchased from a breeder, your pet may already have a microchip. Consult your pet

adoption paperwork, or have your pet scanned for a microchip at your next vet visit to reveal the unique microchip ID number and register it. Q: Isn’t microchipping only for dogs? A: All pets need to be microchipped. Cats often do not wear collars, and may not have any other form of ID. A recent study showed that less than 2% of cats without microchips were returned home. However, if a cat is microchipped, the return-to-owner rate is 20 times higher than if the cat was not microchipped. Q: Can anyone with a scanner access my contact information from the chip? A: Microchips carry only a unique identification number. If your pet gets lost and is taken to a vet clinic or animal shelter, your pet will be scanned for a microchip to reveal his unique ID number. That number will be called into the pet recovery service, and you

will be contacted using the contact information on file with your pet’s microchip. **It is vital to keep your contact information up to date so that you can be reached.
to be replaced. Pet parents can also check to make sure their pet’s microchip is still working by asking a vet to scan it during their pet’s next checkup.
Q: How many times do I need to microchip my pet?
Q: My pet has a microchip. Is that all I need to protect him if he gets lost?
A: A microchip will normally last the lifetime of your pet because it is composed of biocompatible materials that will not degenerate over time.
A: A microchip is only the first step! You must register your pet’s microchip to give your pet the best protection.
The HomeAgain® microchip has the BioBond™ patented anti–migration feature to help ensure the chip stays where it’s implanted. Also, since microchips require no power source and have no moving parts, there’s nothing that can wear out and need

Seasonal Hazards By Rachel Ray, Director of Marketing, Caring Hands Animal Hospital
E
ach season poses its own danger to pets and their well-being. Keep your pet safe, while still enjoying all the fun that each season brings.
Fall/Winter Fatty Trimmings and Bones While it can be tempting to treat your pet to a decadent treat around the holidays, doing so could upset their stomach or cause more serious conditions like pancreatitis. Mild upset can cause vomiting or diarrhea. Signs of pancreatitis include repeated vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and pain or distended abdomen. Bones are also dangerous and can puncture the abdomen or result in painful constipation.
Holiday Plants Festive plants like holly, mistletoe, and poinsettias can also be problematic. If ingested, they can cause vomiting, diarrhea, irritation of the tissues in the mouth and esophagus, seizures, and breathing problems. Keep these plants out of the household if you can or minimally out of reach for pets and children. Holiday Decorations Pets can often mistake tinsel and ribbon as a toy. These can become big a big problem when ingested and destroy the digestive tract. If the intestinal tract becomes obstructed, surgery may be needed. Keep ornaments off of low-lying tree limbs and out of reach from pets and children. Lights and candles can also be a hazard if your pet can reach them.

Nuts
Electric Cords
Macadamia nuts and walnuts can cause trouble for your pet in the form of lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, and elevated body temperature.
If your pet chews on an electric cord, they could suffer burns in and around the mouth, as well as experience difficulty breathing, cardiac arrest, and seizures.
Other toxic food Grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic are just a few examples of foods that should not be fed to pets. They can be very toxic and cause major issues in your pet’s system.
Sign up to receive our free email newsletter at petlovers companion.com.
Spring/Summer Artificial Sweetener One artificial sweetener, in particular, is extremely toxic to dogs and should be avoided completely. Xylitol can be found in many food items as a sugar substitute. Xylitol can traditionally be found in sugar-free gums, breath strips, and lozenges. However, it has more recently been used in peanut butter. Before feeding your dog peanut butter, be sure to check the label for xylitol. Pesticides, Fertilizer, and Mulch Large ingestions can cause an obstruction. Be aware of any fertilizer that contains blood meal, bone meal, feather meal, or iron. These can be especially tasty to pets. Cocoa bean mulch is made with by-products
www.petloverscompanion.com • 703.780.4400
of chocolate production. The smell can encourage dogs to eat the mulch and can cause stomach upset. Plants Lilies, Sago Palm, Crocuses, and Lily of the Valley are all poisonous to pets. Try to keep these out of your home and garden.
Microchipping Microchipping is one of the best ways to help your pet get home safely should they run away or get lost. A microchip is the size of a grain of rice and can be implanted at any time at your veterinarian. Keeping your information up to date is also very important. Heat
Fireworks and Thunderstorms These can be huge anxiety triggers for pets. If you can create a comfortable and quiet environment for your pet if you anticipate fireworks or thunderstorms, it could help ease their stress. Sometimes medications can be prescribed to help as well. Other products such as the ThunderShirt, can be a natural way to curb their anxiety. Always check with your veterinarian before giving any medication.
Heat stroke, burned paw pads, and deaths from being left in cars are harsh realities of the spring and summer. Dark colored animals, overweight, or brachycephalic (short-nosed) dogs should be kept in cool environments as much as possible. Always provide fresh water for pets in the heat and never leave them in a car.

Pet Care for Senior Dogs and Cats By Dr. JoAnne Carey, Takoma Park Animal Clinic
Pets go into middle age at around six to seven years of age and are actually geriatric at ten years
O
nce a year, conscientious pet owners visit their veterinarian for wellness visits and vaccinations. During the examination the doctor will ask about problems or concerns that may be affecting your pet. When dogs and cats are young, these problems may be few but as the pets begin to grow older, owners may start to recognize symptoms and behavior trends that affect the overall picture of health. Pets go into middle age at around six to seven years of age and are actually geriatric at ten years (with large breed dogs aging even sooner). There are proactive things that owners can do to ensure healthy longevity for their animals:

This should be discussed in depth with the veterinarian in order to have all questions answered.

Get Biannual Blood Work For healthy older animals, blood work should be done at least twice a year. Pets age faster than we do and body systems can
change over a period of months. It is more desirable to monitor wellness laboratory findings and attempt to catch any changes before they become problematic. For patients affected with chronic illnesses such as kidney or liver disease, thyroid disorders, heart problems, and those on long-term medications, more frequent blood work will be necessary. Do Not Dismiss Chronic Symptoms If your cat or dog has a history of vomiting or diarrhea, bring it up to your veterinarian. It could be a sign of something more serious down the road. Cats are especially prone to bowel inflammations and an early diagnosis helps with the best treatment. Diarrhea can signal several types of problems in dogs. up, reluctance to jump (cats), eating objects that are not food (called pica), excessive sleeping, increase in urination, and weight loss, can all signal health issues that should be addressed right away. Learn How to Recognize Your Pet’s Discomfort Pets get aches and pains just as we do. Aside from the obvious pain from acute injuries like a laceration or broken toe, there is also chronic pain from arthritis, hip dysplasia, nerve damage, ear aches and cancer. Animals don’t necessarily cry out in pain but they show discomfort in other ways. They may sleep more, become aggressive when
touched, shy away, refuse to move around, show weakness, or limp. Cats may stop eating well. Your veterinarian can help pinpoint where the pain is so that it can be treated, giving your pet comfort and quality of life. Consider following treatment protocols given for pain management not only because it is in your pet’s best interest; it also gives you some input and control over his or her well-being. Dr. Jo Anne Carey, co-founder of Takoma Park Animal Clinic has been serving the community with quality veterinary services and house calls since 1988. Open seven days a week. The practice is conveniently located at 7330 Carroll Ave., Takoma Park, MD 20912. 301-270-4700.

Non-Profit Groups
L
ocal Organizations in this section rely on the contributions of animal lovers like you to care for thousands of abused, abandoned, and injured animals each year. Here are a few ways that you can help: 1. Send a check or money order to the non-profit organization of your choice. 2. Name one of these groups in your will, charitable trust, or insurance policy. 3. Donate real estate, a car or boat, stocks, etc. 4. Donate goods and professional services. 5. Ask for a copy of their “wish list”.
Please consider saving a life by adopting from one of the following rescue groups. These people generously volunteer their time and money toward helping out animal friends. We have provided the most local, updated information, however, this information changes rapidly. ADOPTION/RESCUE -BIRD/EXOTICS

Adopt a Rescued Dog
There are several benefits to adopting a rescued dog. Many rescued dogs are mature adults who are housebroken. Adult dogs are past the stage of chewing on your shoes and furniture. They are loyal to the hand that feeds them, shelters them, and loves them. Give a loving pet a second chance – Adopt. Listed on the following pages are telephone contacts for individual dog breed rescues. If the breed you are looking for is not listed, it may be because the contact for that breed has declined to be in the book or we are not aware of them. Keep in mind when calling these contacts that in many cases you are calling someone’s home. Most of these people are volunteers who donate their time for the love of the breed. Be respectful of the hours you call. Also, be aware that it may take time to get a response to your call.

Dog Parks Continue to Grow
hese parks provide a wonderful opportunity for dogs to exercise and socialize with T other canines. Some dog parks are private and for members only with fees and strict enforcement of park rules. Private parks are rare. Most are the result of grassroots move-
ments and rely largely on users to adhere to rules, clean up after the dogs, and keep the peace by removing aggressive animals. Without the screening required by private parks, there is no way of knowing if all park participants are properly socialized and are current on vaccinations. Most parks operate smoothly. Some parks provide space for dogs to run off leash while others set the stage for positive interaction among pets and people. Note: Some parks may not be completely fenced. Usage may be limited to residents of the particular area.
